Hi Thomas,

I tried lowering the pitch of the chainsaw and it was not even perceptible.
That is I believe that lowering the pitch also lowered the volume or at least
it made the sound blend in with the rest of the sounds. However raising the
pitch was very perceptible. So that is what I am going with for the warning
that the chainsaw is about to run out for version 2.

Hi Thomas,

My problem with the zigzagging ramps would not have been with the math. It
would have been with the sound placement of the barrels rolling down the
zigzagging ramps and trying to depict that some were on higher ramps and some
on lower ramps and some were taking the short cut down the ladders. And of
course having the ladders make noise so that you knew that they were there for
you to climb and watch for barrels coming down them.

To climb a ladder, you begin with the first rung.

I just was concerned at paying 25 pounds, or about 40 dollars for a game

Of course this is another thing I'd like the wii for, as nes games on wii

I'd probably have to scour ebay now, sinse gba games are not sold anymore.

Hmmm, maybe i'll look around and see if there are any good retroremakes for

Hi Jim,

Well, you did a pretty good job of copying the essential game play of
Donkey Kong in Homer level 1, but with some extra twists. Donkey Kong
didn't have birds swooping down to attack you, and in that way Homer
is a bit harder than Donkey Kong level 1. However, you are right. The
chainsaw is more or less like the hammer, and in Donkey Kong there was
no indication when Mario would loose the hammer. It just vanished, and
Mario had to go back to jumping the barrels.

Hi Dark,

Did you just say 4 levels? The Donkey Kong I remember, the Colleco
version I had, I believe had like 10 levels. The version for the

want to look for a retro remake of it. Either that you can play the
game via an emulator like Stella Atari. I believe I have Donkey Kong

Re: [Audyssey] Getting Frustrated with Level 1 of Awesome Homer

2011-07-26 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Yeah, I figure programming the sloping ramps from Donkey Kong would be
a bit tricky to reproduce. As you recall they move up to the left and
to the right at about a 30 degree angle, and Mario has to run up the
ramps while barrels are constantly rolling down. That requires a bit
of geometry to figure out the angles and then program the game to use
the right physics for the barrels as they roll down torwards Mario.
That seems pretty math intensive for a simple game, but that's the way
it goes sometimes. Who knows, maybe I might take on a project like
that just for fun just to give gamers an idea of what the original DK
was like. It was a very fun game as Awesome Homer is.

Cheers!

That would achieve the same end, namely have differences in landscape that

Hi Dark,

That works. If you want any help with Atari emulation let me know as I
have something on par with 200 Atari games on the family PC that my
wife and son like playing from time to time. I have everything from
original 1978 Asteroids to Sega's original version of Zaxon I'd be
very surprised if I don't have original donkey Kong in my collection,
but its been ages since I took a very close look at what I actually do
have. . At some point I have too many games to keep track of. Lol!

As for retro remakes I agree. When and where possible it is always a
bit helpful to find a good retro remake created specifically for
todays machines as running games through emulators doesn't always work
as they should. I've had NES, Atari, and Sega roms lock up on Windows
7, and it irritates me to no end that the same game and emulator
worked just fine on say Windows XP. Emulation certainly isn't
perfect, and creating version specific ports is the best solution for
the problem.

Cheers!

HI Dark,

I guessit is a matter of how realistic you want the simulation to be.
You ar right there are simpler ways to accomplish the same thing
without resorting to the number chrunching and physics, but I always
attempt to look at it as any other college trained programmer would
rather than from the novis perspective. I don't mean this as an

math, higher level programming languages, etc its hard for me to go

problem to solve. That's why I suggested using a bit of physics to
determine how fast the barrels roll down the ramps based on their
weight and the slope or angle of the ramp, and you might even
calculate friction if you are going in for ultra realism here.

All the same you are right. If a developer doesn't care about the
realism setting a speed and having them roll down the ramps at x speed
without factoring physics is totally possible. In the end I'm pretty
sure the end player won't care because they won't know. This is
probably that programming guru factor at work again. :D

Hi Tom.

i might take you up on that later actually when I get back to my flat. You
are however right about emulation at least in my experience with Mame and
winuae.

I think some emulators are in process of being updated to work with later
windows (certainly I've heard winuae has been), but I'm not sure about atari
2600 emulators, you might want to check that.

though as I said, some of the retro remakes are pretty awsome, especially
when they get strange and weerd!

for instance, you may or may not have heard of a very well known game on the
Comador 64 called Jet set willy, sequal to manic miner. A hugely difficult
platform game where you wandered around avoiding enemies and collecting
treasure objects.

There are various remakes that I've had fun with, but there is one
particularly weerd and strange one. Multiplayer online Jetset willy!

Same graphics, beepy mod music and very similar gameplay as the original,
but now you connect to people across the net and can play games like who can
find the most treasures, capture the flag, or get to a particular room in
the house in the fastest time.

Sadly not accessible to me due to a lot of text (pluss I was never really
that good at the original anyway), but one of the most intreaguing ideas
I've ever seen, take a game from the very early 80's, keep everything the
same, but add internet multiplayer something which would've been largely
science fiction for home computer users at the time ;D.

then again, this is something several audio games have actually shown a
tendency to do with online scoreboards and such.

Hi tom.

I was simply going on the basis that in audio, your obviously not going to
see much of the actual barrel movement, just have to recalculate as your
character gets to the ramps, and if this is all the player will have to do,
why worry about the rest when simply a bit of extra sspeed would do as well?

i suppose I am just naturally lazy, even when thinking out game programming
problems ;D.

Look at something like judgement day. liam could've added air resistance,
vectors of flight, falling wreckage, damaged vehicles, heck, realistically
I'm not even sure if you could! take out 30 hellicopters and planes by
shooting a machine gun into the air, but obviously sinse it was an arcade
game hhe just stuck to space invaders point and shoot sinse that was what he
was aiming for, ha ha.

That's my point about donkey kong, but again, as you said it's again
probably a case of thinking of things from the perspective of a programmer
actually creating a virtual environment, and of a player who only gets to
experience that environment through the medium of whatever actions they can
perform in a game.

Cheers!

Hi Dark,

The only thing is, the original Donkey Kong had no indication as to when the
hammer or hatchet was going to run out. That is why I did not put one in
Awesome Homer. I could never really tell if it was supposed to be a hammer or
hatchet. But it did the same as my chainsaw, that is smash or cut through the
barrels. In Donkey Kong you had to jump to grab the hammer. And since the
level zigzagged it had ladders for short cuts. But the barrels would come down
the ladders as well. Oh yeah, and there were no birds, but I tried to make
level 1 similar to Donkey Kong.

Firstly, the hammer had musical phrases which you could count the exact time

Re: [Audyssey] Getting Frustrated with Level 1 of Awesome Homer

2011-07-24 Thread dark

Hi.

for the bird, you need to be ducking, ie, holding down the shift key. you
can actually duck and run at the same time which helps.

for the barrels, one thing I noticed is that Jim was very! precise on when
you jump. you get litle chance for error, and even when running and jumping
(which gives you more air time), you really! need to be close to the barrel,
ie, it's sound needs to be only just left of center.

if you jump even a litle too early, your in deep trouble.

I'm not sure about multiple lives, sinse I've not finished level 1 and the
only occasion i could see multiple lives be useful is if the game doesn't
save to the level (though i presume it does).

However one feature I'd love to see in the game is some sort of indicator as
to when your chainsaw is about to run out.

I've lost several times when i'm charging along and suddenly booof! out goes
my saw and I'm too close to a barrel to stop, indeed the only way I've found
of doing the saw is by counting the number of barrels it hits, and this
isn't that efficient sinse it can be anywhere betwene 7 and 9.

Some sort of beeping when the saw is a few seconds from dying out so that
you could get in position to jump the next barrel instead of sawing through
it would be much appreciated and make things imho less unfair when using the
saw.

Other than that, i'm liking the game so far, even if I stil! haven't
finished the first level despite jumping 22 barrels and destroying 7 more.

Yeah really. The Pipe 2 barrel sound is just the rhino sound from Hunter.
That's one thing I always found annoying about BSC's games. Granted
Draconis reuses some sounds but not very often from what I've noticed. And
anyway I get the feeling that in Draconis' case it's actually done
deliberately because a particular effect can be used in more than one
context instead of just being reused because it's on hand. With BSC it was
just confusing.

Hi,
My complaint is that sometimes it seems like it's just pure luck that can
make you lose at certain points in the level. For instance, when that saw
runs out, you will usually find yoursle with aobut five or more barrels
to
your left. Now, if you land at just the wrong place after jumping, you
won't

havetime to get into the air afterwards. But I'm loving it anyway, the
sounds are excellent, particularly the barrels. A far cry from Pipe 2's
barrel sounds. ;)

comes

and at the same time make sure that a barrel is far enough away that it
won't get you. It's easier said then done some of the time for me

I'm still practicing on level 1. Today, I actually go to the second

Hi,

I'm glad that Jim has released a new game, but at the same time I'm
getting frustrated with Level 1. So far, I've been able to jump over at
least four or five barrels, but keep getting knocked out by a bird, even
though I'm ducking. Sometimes, I try ducking as soon as I land, but then
get knocked out by another barrel or something. How do you get past the
birds? As for feature suggestions, it would be nice if you could skip
the
cutscenes at the start of the level, and have more than one life, sort
of
like in Donkey Kong, where you had three at the start of the game. Just
my

opinion, anyway.

As I said Haiden, I'd like to see a sound added for when the saw is about to

That doesn't spoil the game though, awsome it is indeed even though I've not
got past level 1 thus far.

Hi,
My complaint is that sometimes it seems like it's just pure luck that can
make you lose at certain points in the level.

A far cry from Pipe 2's
barrel sounds. ;)

Hi,

I'm glad that Jim has released a new game, but at the same time I'm
getting frustrated with Level 1. So far, I've been able to jump over at
least four or five barrels, but keep getting knocked out by a bird, even

Hi Keao,

I like to jump the first two barrels and then stop running. Now when I hear
the next two barrels coming, I start running again and jump them. Now usually
the bird will come before the next barrel. So keep running and hold down the

2011-07-22 Thread Bryan Peterson
Yeah really. The Pipe 2 barrel sound is just the rhino sound from Hunter.
That's one thing I always found annoying about BSC's games. Granted Draconis
reuses some sounds but not very often from what I've noticed. And anyway I
get the feeling that in Draconis' case it's actually done deliberately
because a particular effect can be used in more than one context instead of
just being reused because it's on hand. With BSC it was just confusing.

Re: [Audyssey] Getting Frustrated with Level 1 of Awesome Homer

2011-07-21 Thread Keao Wright

Hello Jim,
I'm having trouble jumping over the baros.
I'm not sure when to duck.

Subject: [Audyssey] Getting Frustrated with Level 1 of Awesome Homer

How do you get past the
birds? As for feature suggestions, it would be nice if you could skip the
cutscenes at the start of the level, and have more than one life, sort of
like in Donkey Kong, where you had three at the start of the game. Just my
opinion, anyway.

Thanks.

Yours Sincerely,
