Re: Lyx + pdf + aspell problem on windows

2006-01-30 Thread Geoffrey Lloyd

Hi,

I just installed the 1.3.7 on two windows machines (XP and 2000) which
had aspell preinstalled in c:/aspell.
I cannot get lyx to use aspell. What should I do.

When you say this what do you mean? If you produce a test doc with clearly
misspelled words and put the cursor at the start of the doc and select
spell check from teh menu what happens?

Do you hjave a dictrionary installed?

ON the other hand if you are trying to change ispell to aspell in the
preferences then this wont work. It always says I spell.

I changed the preview to call : acrord32.exe because there was nothing
there.

Now it calls acrobat reader but the reader always says file not found

Any ideas? (sorry if these questions have already been asked. I couldn't
find out how to search the mailing lists...)

Is the reader open before the call to view pdf? Try closing acrobat andf
then selecting preview in lyx.

1.3.7 and 1.4

Hi

I just wondered if anyone knew the timescale for 1.4 release. I know that
1.4pre3 has been available since christmas and this is nearly the final

The reason I ask is that with the release of 1.3.7 I have to decide
whether to upgrade to that, or wait a few weeks and get the ful release of
1.4?

While on the subject does anyone have a precompiled binary of 1.4pre for
windows that they would be happy to forward to me.

I think you are getting confused by the two possible scenarios.

1) 'maintain aspect ratio' checked. In this case you would only logically
set one parameter as the image automatically scaled by Latex. I have no
idea what happens if you specify both width and height but it seems a
silly thing to do anyway as you are trying to place a scaled image wrt one
dimension.

2) 'maintain aspect ratio' unchecked. Now you need to enter both h and w.
Both these are used to scale the image and Latex does nothing linking the
two.

Sorry to be an accurate scientist but really the 2 should be SUBscripted

Format-Character dialog box. There was also no subscript. I know this
can't be true -- how do I do it?

I'm using LyX 1.3.3.

You can insert a subscript with insert -- special character -- subscript.
It is a hack that will create a math inset with a subscript.
Or you can use in ERT O\textsuperscript{2}

The two solutions are not typographically equivalent, the superscript is
not placed at the same place. For abreviations superscripts like 12th for
example, or Mr. Dr., use textsuperscript for chemical symbols use a
mathematical inset.

I wish the actual superscript and subscript hacks could go away. They are a
pain when you export a LyX file to rtf (they are transformed in
mathematical formulas) and result in wrong typesetting. Lyx should default
to \textsuperscript and \textsubscript

Thanks Charles,

I tried these both, and they both worked. I chose the
Insert-Specialcharacter-superscript method for 2 reasons:

1) The 2 was visible in the LyX file, which is more clear
2) The 2 was bigger, which in this case I liked.

Thanks so much for the help.

THese allow you to scale the image as you want it to be on the page. So

text% - this is percentage of text width
col% - column width
page% - page width
line% - line width
theight% -text height
pheight% -page height

So you can set either the width or height of the image. Using the
'maintain aspect ratio' box locks the figure so that if you halve the
width you also halve the height. It stops the figure getting distorted.
However you can set the height and width thus forcing the image to

THese allow you to scale the image as you want it to be on the page. So
say your original graphic is A4 sized but you want it to be much

smaller

in print then the following are useful

text% - this is percentage of text width
col% - column width
page% - page width
line% - line width
theight% -text height
pheight% -page height

So you can set either the width or height of the image. Using the
'maintain aspect ratio' box locks the figure so that if you halve the
width you also halve the height. It stops the figure getting distorted.
However you can set the height and width thus forcing the image to
distort.

In general i set the width of my figures so they look how i want

(taking

in to account the aspect ratio) and use the text% option.

Just play about and see what suits.

The float is the image+caption. So really the scaling of the image, to fit

For this you really need to proceed by trial and error. Now you know how

You can only scale images, I am not sure you can scale floats which is
what you are thinking happens.

The float is the image+caption. So really the scaling of the image, to fit
the float on your page, will depend how much space your caption takes up.

For this you really need to proceed by trial and error. Now you know how
to sclae your image you will just have to play a bit.

I cant see why one would set both. THe point is if you want you figure to
be say 10cm wide, want to maintain the shape, and arent worried about
height then you set the width and click 'maintain aspect ratio'

If you are however converned with height and not width do the opposite.

And finally if you want to specify a height/width ratio different from the
original figure then enter values for both height and width and leave the
'maintain aspect ratio' box blank.

In order to set the width or height to be calculated in proportion to the
aspect ratio set the value to 0 sp.

e.g. I have a 5cm wide 2cm high figure

1) I want it to be 11cm wide on the page. Set width 11cm height 0sp and
clivk maitina aspct

2) I want it to be 4cm hgih. Set width 0sp height 200% and selct maintain

3) I wanr it to be 11cm wide and 4cm high. Set width 11cm height 4cm and

Thanks Geoffrey for your investigation. I also get this error with some
documents that use complicated math constructs (for example if I load my
math-documentation

http://wiki.lyx.org/uploads/LyX/LyXMathebefehle/LyXMathebefehle.lyx )

The problem is a bug in the Ghostscript version (8.15) that is used
internally by MiKTeX.

Does Instant preview work when you create a new document (without preamble
stuff) with simple formulas like:

A=B

regards Uwe

Yes I get the same error - except the number increaes by 1 eachtime.

For reference when I had the original 1.3.6 version (Angus Installer) and
installed ghostscript by hand Instant Preview worked fine so I am not
convinced it is a problem with MikTex as I have not changed my MikTex
installation.

Could you please close LyX and then move its preferences folder LyX from

Geoffrey, that was some good sleuthing work, I admired the ingenuity
and persistence. The documentation for Miktex either flatly states, or
strongly recommends, installing MikTex to a directory without spaces.
I think the defaults are c:\texmf and c:\localtexmf.

Just to clear this up this is a problem with Ghostscript not Miktex.

Using the Angus installer, I have not been able to install to C:\LyX
for 1.3.7pre without the install failing. I suppose though, that if using
Instant preview doesn't work with the Angus installer, installing to
C:\program files\LyX, then that would have been reported. Sometimes
eccentric computer behavior is so subtly causal that it seems like magic.

From my experience Instant Preview will work with the Uwe installer if Lyx

is put in a path without spaces such as C:\Lyx

Everything else appears to work fine wherever you put Lyx.

Like I said this is a Ghostscript not Lyx/Latex issue and they have been
informed.

If this is a problem with Ghostscript, rather than paths with spaces, or
LyX, why did gswin32.exe 0lsypreview.ps work? Was Ghostscript
used to create 0lsypreview.ps?

I'm under the impression that the same ghostscript was used in both
cases, C:\Lyx which worked and C:\program files\lyx which did not.

The difference is in the path. Miktex and Aspell say to install in paths
without spaces. If Miktex or Aspell failed because of a space in the
path one would not say there is a Miktex or Aspell problem but a
Path problem (due to Linux/Windows porting). The Path appears to
be the problem with ghostscript not working. This seems to be my
day to learn things, so could you provide a little more clarity? I don't
mean repeat Uwe's evaluation, but explain why his diagnosis is correct.

Hmmm good point. Wherever Lyx is the temp directory still has paths with
spaces and so 0lyxpreview.ps still has spaces in its path.

Maybe it is something to do with the path to GS having spaces in this case
but we have stumbled across another problem with GS which is not related.

I honestly couldnt say.

Me neither. However, there *is* a problem with the lyxpreview2ppm.py

when the path to the executable contains spaces. Perhaps you could see if
the attached patch fixes things?

I would love to help but I am not in a position, or experienced enough, to

However this does sound like it could be the route of the problem.

Thanks Geoffrey for your investigation. I also get this error with some
documents that use complicated math constructs (for example if I load my

Does Instant preview work when you create a new document (without preamble

A=B

I uninstalled and reinstalled in the usual C:\Program Files\Lyx and it
failed

I tried again at C:\Lyx and it worked fine once again. Is this a spaces in
path problem (I am using Miktex 2.4.1704) ???

Also - unrelated I am sure - the startup time in the non-default locations
is much quicker.

It seems so, I'll test it.
(I use a german Windows where the default path is C:\Programme\LyX)
But anyway, is the Instant preview the only problem when you installed to
C:\Program Files\Lyx ?

Not sure why I didnt try a different nonspaced path before but I think
Instnat Preview is the only problem. It certainly compiles my 120 page
thesis no problem in all locations via Export->blah

I think the installer is very good. I want my research group to use lyx but
the IT guy said no after he watched me install, fiddle, hack and general
force my way through 1.3.5 for Windows. Now with this one package I can see
it on all machines next week!

Thanks for your hard work.

Like I said this is a Ghostscript not Lyx/Latex issue and they have been
informed.

If this is a problem with Ghostscript, rather than paths with spaces, or
LyX, why did "gswin32.exe 0lsypreview.ps" work?

Uwe wrote:
Could you check as last try to copy the "0lyxpreview.ps" from LyX's temp

command

gswin32c.exe 0lyxpreview.ps

Me neither. However, there *is* a problem with the lyxpreview2ppm.py
script

when the path to the executable contains spaces. Perhaps you could see if
the attached patch fixes things?

I would love to help but I am not in a position, or experienced enough, to
compile from scratch - sorry.

However this does sound like it could be the route of the problem.

Any elucidation would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

There is no missing step. commandline export should produce identical

Yes it should but you must note that Export-Pdflatex is different to
Export-latex followed by running pdflatex on the file.

In the second case the only Export that Lyx is performing is Lyx-tex. This
will not convert any graphics file formats.

Subsequent running of pdflatex is outside of Lyx and so it will run, find

The only way around this is to use a pdflatex compatible image format in the
first place. THe reason for this is the following:

Within Lyx when you Export-pdflatex it converts the graphics files, then
does the convert to tex with the new file extensions. However if you
Export-tex the output will have the gof extensions and so regardless of

2) one step back in the math box (e.g. with the left arrow of the
numerical pad) ;
3) open an exposant or an indice ;
4) without having typed anything in the box, get out of it.

To the right, OK.
To the left, the top or the bottom, lyx crashes with an emergency saving.

I find it is Ok to the right, left and bottom but crashes if I exit Top

Subject: Problems with my editor's note environment

Hi all,

My editor's not environment has 2 problems:

1. I cannot center the word Editor's Note
2. The line spacing on the last paragraph in this environment is spaced
much

wider than other paragraphs in the same environment.

Note that the base for my layout file is memoir.

Here's my editor's note environment:

% ### whitebox is basis for StartNote and EndNote ###
% ### Implements 80% width, and indented paragraphs. ###
\newenvironment{whitebox}[0]%
 {%
 \setlength{\widthchange}{-2in}%
 \setlength{\minipagewidth}{\textwidth}%
 \addtolength{\minipagewidth}{\widthchange}%
 \hspace{-0.5\widthchange}%
 \begin{minipage}[]{\minipagewidth}%
 \begin{bfseries}%%
 Editor's Note\\[.2in]%
 \begin{tiny}%%
 \setlength\parindent{16pt}%%
 }%
 {%
 \end{tiny}%
 \end{bfseries}%
 \par
 \end{minipage}%
 ~\\[0.1in]
 }%

If I use

\center{Editor's Note}\\

it centers everything in the minipage -- not just the words Editor's Note.
Go

figure.

I think this is correct. Everything after center will be centered until you
tell it to do something else like raggedleft or raggedright

Not sure about the second issue as I couldn't seem to get the environment to
work? If you could send a lyx file off list to me with it 'working' I will
happily fiddle with it for you.

Geoff

I'm sure my mistakes are minor, but I can't find them. Anybody have an
idea?

In the attached file, there are some math, entered in the following way:
1) type any character ;
2) one step back in the math box (e.g. with the left arrow of the

3) open an exposant or an indice ;
4) without having typed anything in the box, get out of it.

To the right, OK.
To the left, the top or the bottom, lyx crashes with an emergency saving.

I find it is Ok to the right, left and bottom but crashes if I exit Top

Subject: Problems with my editor's note environment

Hi all,

My editor's not environment has 2 problems:

1. I cannot center the word Editor's Note
2. The line spacing on the last paragraph in this environment is spaced
much

wider than other paragraphs in the same environment.

Note that the base for my layout file is memoir.

Here's my editor's note environment:

% ### whitebox is basis for StartNote and EndNote ###
% ### Implements 80% width, and indented paragraphs. ###
\newenvironment{whitebox}[0]%
 {%
 \setlength{\widthchange}{-2in}%
 \setlength{\minipagewidth}{\textwidth}%
 \addtolength{\minipagewidth}{\widthchange}%
 \hspace{-0.5\widthchange}%
 \begin{minipage}[]{\minipagewidth}%
 \begin{bfseries}%%
 Editor's Note\\[.2in]%
 \begin{tiny}%%
 \setlength\parindent{16pt}%%
 }%
 {%
 \end{tiny}%
 \end{bfseries}%
 \par
 \end{minipage}%
 ~\\[0.1in]
 }%

If I use

\center{Editor's Note}\\

it centers everything in the minipage -- not just the words Editor's Note.
Go

figure.

I think this is correct. Everything after center will be centered until you
tell it to do something else like raggedleft or raggedright

Not sure about the second issue as I couldn't seem to get the environment to
work? If you could send a lyx file off list to me with it 'working' I will
happily fiddle with it for you.

Geoff

I'm sure my mistakes are minor, but I can't find them. Anybody have an
idea?

Thanks

SteveT

Re: More about foreign languages - No!

2005-10-16 Thread Geoffrey Lloyd

On Lyx1.3.6 you simply need to go to Layout-Document-Language

I dont have Edit-Text style either. Really it works if you do above..

   Oh my!

Maybe this is the problem: I don't have at my Lyx
a manu called 'Edit-Text Style'! Which Lyx version is
yours?

---
What you in fact need to do is ensure that any of
the items that are in the wrong language. Select
everything that needs to be in Portueguese and go to
Edit Text Style. Choose the correct language from the
Language drop box.

Re: pdflatex MacOS X

2005-10-13 Thread Geoffrey Lloyd

David and Bennett

I too have problems when I try an view or export you file with pdflatex - I
am using winXP

I have had a fiddle about and find the following interesting although have
no idea what t means or how to fix it!!

I called the original lyx document test1.lyx and the file to be included
test2.pdf

Export-Latex on test1.lyx produces test1true.tex (as i have remnamed it)
Export-pdflatex produces test1.tex

These two files differ slightly (why i do not know - surley lyx should
produce the same .tex file in the lyx-tex step**see below) but importantly
they both compile correctl with pdflatex in the command window.

But Export-pdflatex also produces test1.tex.dep-pdf

I have no idea what this file is used for but you will see there are two
columns of numbers on the left. For test2.pdf the second value is zero. This
is not good. And maybe this is the source of the problem.

**
What I dont understand is why lyx doesnt simply generate the tex and then
run pdflatex. Doing this by hand produces the correct result. What is it
that lyx is doing differently to do this conversion?
