[MBZ] Lowest gas prices in the USA

2015-08-10 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
CAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — The average price of gasoline has dropped 11 cents
over the past two weeks to $2.71 a gallon.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that the current average sits
81 cents below the year-ago price.

The cheapest price recorded in the continental United States was $2.19 a
gallon in Charleston, South Carolina.

The highest was $3.80 a gallon in Los Angeles. California saw a 21-cent
price drop over the past two weeks — following a huge spike caused by a
brief supply shortage. Lundberg says supplies are flowing again and pump
prices are poised to drop further in the Golden State.

Yes to what AS said.

Try coconut milk in your next batch of ice cream.

Coconut milk would be quite rich. I was thinking regular milk, perhaps
with some half and half thrown in. I also probably overblended - went past
the point when the mixture "gelled" to a solid, causing it to then relapse
to a smoothie/slushie texture.

I saw in the Costco magazine that they are starting to put dizzel pumps

2015-08-10 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
My buddy finished his baking courses at the local CC and is now into the
ice cream phase. He brought me a sample of his recent homework, it is
like a big ice cream ball thing with avocado/lime/coconutmilk (you put
de lime in de coconut drink it all up) in the middle and mango something
on the outside which is made with cream. The avocado lime coconut is
very light and refreshing, almost like a sorbet but a bit more heft to
it. You can't really taste the avocado but it also gives some fat and
thickness to the blend, and the green color. He put a crust on it of
roasted hazelnuts and chocolate bits. it is quite awesome.

I look forward to grading more homework assignments. When this class is
over he starts bread.

[MBZ] MAF-less

2015-08-10 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Does anyone know if our cars, in my case the M119 engine, will run without the
MAF?

Granted, I would expect it to run poorly, but I was wondering as I continue to
part out the S500.

FWIW, I've sold almost $1000 worth of parts and have maybe $500 more currently
on eBay. And that doesn't include the $270 I will get at the scrapper for the
two catalytic converters or the scrap value of the car when I'm done, maybe
$100-$150.

Just factoring purchase cost and nothing more, I might end up breaking even on
this car when it's all said and done!

Beats me.

All I know is that almost immediately after I posted on the local CL that the
car was being parted I started getting offers for the cats for like $60. The
activity made me realize they must be a hot commodity, so I checked with some
local scrap metal people.

Mine are considered "large import" cats and are selling for around $135 each at
the local scrapyards.

One guy kept emailing me with increasing offers. When he got up to $100, I told
him I would take the going rate for them, $135/each.

Haven't heard from him since.

Curt brings up a good point. The harder the pads (ceramic) the more
likely they are to squeal, AND the more they wear your rotors.

I can get 200 to 300k out of rotors with the cheap (dusty) pads. it
is easy to change pads and cheap, it is harder and expensive to
change rotors.

Ceramic pads DO have to be broken in properly to work properly and
also to not warp your rotors.

The ceramic pads of the dogde and the rotors needed to be changed at
a little over 100k. Mucho dinero$$$

I've never had to buy rotors for my Mercedes with the "organic" or
asbestos pads.

I see no advantage, unless you have a show car and the dust is a
significant factor. I see several DISadvantages to ceramic.

Correction, the squealing pads were conventional Car Quest "red" which were
supposed to be their better pads...I didn't notice any lower rotor life using
ceramic, here the rotors lots of times rot out from rust put there with road

Apparently it still is to some extent. I'd expect it probably in the cheapest

Here we have two grocer chains, one (Bi-Lo) does the points similar what you
describe, another (Harris Teeter) sells gas station gift cards at 20% off, one
fifty dollar card for every fifty dollars in groceries. Shell stations accept
both the discount points card from the first chain and the gift cards, so you

In theory only. In reality, the data is rarely collected for true hot
stuff, like stolen AC condenser. A couple years back a BBQ cooker was
stolen from out church. These cost about $5K; they are basically a big
stainless steel "grill" with electric heaters which hold 2-3 whole pigs.
This item was later found at a local scrap yard in "trashed" condition but
somehow the paperwork didn't show who sold it to the scrapper. Like gun
laws, this is a nuisance for honest people and no problem for folks with
criminal intent.

You need to find a redneck scrapper. Chuckie and I scrapped my '85 190D and I
forgot to take the title. "Your car?" the guy asked. "Yup" I replied. "No

Down here they take everything but a DNA sample when you scrap stuff. I
scrapped some alloy wheels a few years ago, and the took my driver's license to
scan, a thumbprint, a picture, and a picture of my license plate.

2 years ago, I had 5 cars stolen from storage. They were all waiting
restoration and none ran, so most likely they all were sold for scrap,
based on other things that were stolen in the robbery..

To date.. despite having clear title to each vehicle, cops have found no
junkyard that will own up to taking them in, despite a state law that
requires them to record VIN numbers and have title in hand.

Yeah.. in a perfect world..

Re: [MBZ] MAF-less

2015-08-10 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
They’re pretty retentive about selling scrap metals down here, although I can’t
vouch for how successful that is.

The issue for years were people stealing AC condensers, as they would just go
up to them, take some insulated cutters and just sever the power and
refrigerant lines and toss them in the back of a truck.

It got to the point where the major recyclers would only take AC units from
commercial AC places they had been dealing with.

Can’t address the car thing, as I haven’t dealt with those folks, but I will be
shortly. Certainly no shortage of places that “Pay Top Dollar” for your junk
or wrecked cars down here, that’s for sure.

A couple weeks ago I dropped some cans at a recycler close to my work, and
their signs say they can only take home/office HVAC stuff if you bring in a
receipt for the purchase of the new equipment that replaced the old.
Sounded kind of desperate to me. I'll bet I can gin up a pretty good
looking receipt on my laptop in about 10 minutes.

About 2005, when scrap prices were really high, there were a number of
folks here who would slide under cars in parking lots [ie WalMart] and use
battery sawzalls to cut cats out of as many cars as they could, then run
them to the scrap buyers to support their drug habit.

This happened so much that the cops put a serious hurt on scrap dealers who
were found buying them and put regs in place to curb such activity..

Seems to have worked.. haven't heard of it happening lately..

I scrapped my old hvac heat pump a few weeks back, got about $100 for the whole
deal. The compressor which weighed maybe 50 lb fetched the best after the
copper coils. Cash for a bunch of iron etc (including old Benz rotors) but a
check for the copper etc.

Sounded kind of desperate to me. I'll bet I can gin up a pretty good
looking receipt on my laptop in about 10 minutes.

Re: [MBZ] Ceramic Brake Pads

2015-08-10 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
It is not the pads that need the breakin. It is the rotors. proper
breakin coats the rotors evenly with the pad material which bonds to
the rotor.

hink the ceramic pads come already "set" by a baking process, read
that over the weekend on one of the makers websites. Not sure if
Akebono are same, I don't remember any special process when I
installed them a few years ago.

Just paid $45, I think OE from MB run about $70 or more.

Arizona.

Also lost about $500,000 in shop tools in the event... so it stings. Major
reward posted.. perhaps they will be caught... likely it all went to Mexico.

Good thing there are no criminals sneaking across the border. Only
people who sing we are the world and kum by ya.
