AMEN. In my neighborhood here, everyone seems to think is OK to just
let their dogs runs around as they please. They often come in our yard
to take a dump or whatever. ARe those people prepared to loose their
house or all their money when I sue them because their dog bit one of my
kids? I think not. Not everyone thinks that way and they should. We
had one dog that ALWAYS came to our house, terrorizing the cats,
carrying off things off the porch, carried off several pairs of shoes
from the next door neighbor etc. Have gone down to their house MANY
times asking them to do something about it. THey didnt want to chain
it, were to cheap or unwilling to build a fence. The next door neighbor
has been down to let them know what their dog does. They do nothing
about it. The last time the dog was here we hooked a leash to it and
tied it to a tree in the front yard and the wife wrote a letter to the
neighbor telling them to get their dog under control and that it was
tied to our tree and to come get it etc. Well within a couple weeks the
letter from the planning commision comes, but that is another story.

Say WHAT? I hope you're thinking of the 115 diesels, on a 123 the oil filter couldn't be easier. Well okay theres a bunch of vacuum crap right there too but aside from that its pretty stinkin easy. A '96 Dodge Dakota v8 is MUCH harder which is why I don't change the oil in my Dakota...

2006-01-18 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I noticed there is a nice looking 90 or 91 300SE in the autotrader
locally for 5k or so. Anyways, the fuel filter is more of a hassle than
the diesels, its righ next the the right rear tire, under the car. You
have to loosen the bracket, remove the lines and pull it out. Will also
probalby have to remove the protective cover as well.

Where is the fuel filter on a M103? Is it as easy to change as on the
diesels - i.e. spin on? The spark plugs are probably fairly accessible
given the fact that it is a straight six. Any weird maintenance quirks
I need to know about the M103 or the 126? Things like coolant flushes,
power steering fluid changes, transmission fluid changes, and brakes
will be fairly standard, so I won't have to (get to) learn anything new
about that. I just thought about it, I have no idea where the oil
filter is? Is it as much of a pain as on the 123/124 diesels? Any
thoughts would be great?

Later that night, he spied the parked Vette and did a full throttle

For the record I dont see ANYTHING wrong with plunking a BB at a
cat/dog/whatever that is doing something its not supposed to. It will
not kill said animal but will shock them into thinking twice. Now if
you load up a pellet instead and pump that sucker up quite a bit, you
could get a lethal shot I suppose, but not with a low powered bb. Its
better than having to all out shoot to kill the thing.

That was a wonderful car. I mistyped--it was a 504. He also had a 505

typical French body roll, but unbeatable on rough roads. What
eventually killed it was cracking two heads. By the time the second
one went, it was almost impossible to get parts. The engine was
bomber, though, with wet liners and everything. Got 32 mpg city or

a wonderful, well-built car you could drive for days at a stretch.

I remember reading an article supposedly written by a cap, about
when his department had Aspens or Volares. One time he was running
flat out on an emergency run when some joker in a Vette passed him.
Later that night, he spied the parked Vette and did a full throttle
U-turn. A ball joint separated, causing the front of the criuser
to collapse. Vette pilot got arrested, he was laughing too hard to
run away.

Well, the tranny was still going strong at about 180 K Kil if memory serves
to be correct. The motor gave up a head gasket (again in the winter) and it
was too expensive to have a shop fix it so we bought another car and let it
sit until spring and then I fixed it. The motor was clean and showed little
or no wear inside (I'm pretty anal about oil changes). It had 2 broken head
bolts and that is why it blew the headgasket. It had always been somewhat
suspect as it constantly lost coolant but I just watched it and waited for
it to show me where. It finally did at Xmas time. The car was a year old and
had about 40 K kil when I got it and I drove it fairly hard and then dumped
it on my wife. The body was losing paint pretty bad by the time we sold it
but it really wasn't too bad. Struts were the worst expense except for the
head gasket. It had a water pump, brakes and a battery over about 10 years
but then it really did not get a lot of miles. 180 K Kil is only about 112 K
miles.

That is a not uncommon failure with Mercedes diesels
(115/123/124/126/201 diesels at least) if the pan hits a curb, speed
bump, railroad tracks or the like. Mercedes sells a steel skid plate
that provides considerable protection. Despite many insurance companies
NOT volunteering that they cover such collisions, they ARE covered by
collision insurance in MOST states. A neighbor had the engine in his 76
300D replaced in the late '70s (he had to appeal to the PA Insurance
Commission who ruled in his favor) and Richard Easley (from that OTHER
list) had the engine in his 300SDL covered 6-7 years ago. I've heard of
several others being covered.

Re: [MBZ] Maintenance items on 126 -- M103

2006-01-18 Thread Hendrik Riessen
Changing the fuel filter is a pain because the large feed hose has to be
clamped but there will still be a little bit of fuel escape all over your
arm. There should also be a screen in the tank itself which can block up.
There should be small screens within the fuel system itself (there are on
the K-jetronic) that can block up.
Far as the oil goes, if you give the filter a chance to drain there should
not be oil come out of it but change the filter reguarly because they are
fairly small for the size of the motor and I know the earlier cannister
types (in the M102) where quite inadequate. Also if you plan on keeping the
car for a while get the best filters available, that is not an area to save
money.

Donald,

The fuel filter is probably under the rear of the car, by the right
rear tire, behind a plastic panel. At least that's where the fuel
pumps and filter are hidden on all 124 gassers. The M103 oil filter is
awful, it's a spin-on at the rear of the engine. Removing the air
filter allows better access. It's mounted upside down, so when you
remove it, you'll get a half-pint of oil spilled down the block,
making a nice mess... every time. I much prefer the diesel, and M119
(V8) gas, cartridge filters which can be changed with zero spillage.
If you think the diesel oil fiter change is a pain, you'll looove the
M103, heh-heh. Stick with the OEM filters from Rusty, of course, or
perhaps the K&N (my favorite non-OEM spin-on oil filter.)

:)

I will be flying out to Tampa this Friday for my Rendezvous with my new
car. The seller is meeting me at the airport. He will have title in
hand and I will have check to present to him. Here's is my question.

I don't think the old Chrysler products had any more problem with stock oil

No, and the sardines won't be enough either. There is now a bittering agent

In fact, I happen to think (and I'm sure Jim will disagree strenously
here), that straight-across trunk lids, especially those with
pronounced curved edges leading down from the decklid to the seal (as
on a BMW 2002), look silly. Like the car is pulling a pirate's
treasure chest on a trailer.

R, matey! My faaavorite feature.

The low-access trunks, in order to give you enough clearance
to actually get into the things, open to near vertical. Which
means that the trunk opening can't be too big or you wouldn't
be able to reach it to close it. Which makes in all for a
nasty squatty little hole of a trunk with a limp-wristed
tiny little lid with an awkward closing action. Ugh.

Low-access also means that crap will roll out of it if you
ever need to leave the lid open to carry something large.
Double-ugh.

[MBZ] Deep Sump clearance

2006-01-18 Thread Dan Weeks

on my '68 Coronet I had a deep-sump oil
pan put on when I had that engine rebuilt. It hangs a couple inches below
the cross-member (looks cool - I still haven't entirely grown up). But it's
a very skiddish feeling to know that if I take a road at higher speed with
dips in it, it could be a real problem. I always wanted to fashion a thick
aluminum shield.

Yeah. My brother once outran an early seventies Fury III Police
interceptor with a 440 due to the latter's oilpan damage. The most
humiliating part of the incident (for the Maine State Trooper) was
that my brother was driving a Peugeot 505 diesel (2.4l, 70 hp) at the
time.

Here's what happened: Bombing down a backroad in northern Maine.
Long, steep downhill, very rough. Brother cruising down the hill,
speed limit 45, on the Poo-goat's bottomless suspension at about 75,
no problem. Cop comes after him. Brother opens the 'goat up, which on
a steep downhill resulted in a mechanically governed top speed of an
indicated 100mph. By this time, his wheels are often off the ground,
but since he's up against the governor, he hardly notices, as the
revs don't change, and all that suspension travel was acting like it
was made for touch-and-go landings. Still, cruiser gaining fast, but
brother just kept his foot down and waited for the inevitable, as he
knew the road well. Looks in the mirror to see the cruiser sail off a
bump into midair and come down nose-first at a pretty steep angle
midway up the next bump. Car parts go every where, including a big
chunk of the pan. Cruiser coasted to a stop. Brother did not.

It has the usual stuff you never see like the preheater and the cell
phone, but at the very bottom of the page is a little rotary knob
captioned "Radio guidance sensor." Huh? There is the factory option
code 351 "autopilot system" (COMAND?) and we all know Mercedes did its
best work with slide rules and not computers, but I think this is a bit
beyond the capabilities of 1970s technology.

So, anyone know what the heck it is?

Well, let's look at this philosophically. If someone cares for their pets,
perhaps they should not allow their pets to trespass on others' property.
Once your pet is on my property against my will, it is violating my rights
(just as if you trespass on my property you are violating same rights), and
has no rights of its own (well, animals don't actually have rights -
technically what has occurred is you have forfeited your right to have your
animal as your unharmed property) - so I can (morally speaking, not
practically, see next paragraph) do to it what I want - let it roam,
forcibly remove it, or end the problem in other ways.

Granted, legally the trespassee probably can't do much, but then again
legally you can't do much when there's a robber in your house, either - even
places that do have "make my day" laws usually really restrict their
applicability (which is sad, blatant bs). But, the main point is,
responsible pet owners keep their animals under control and don't let them
wander on people's cars or whatnot - and they shouldn't be upset when others
are annoyed by this kind of irresponsibility, and express that annoyance in
allegedly inappropriate ways.

Re: [MBZ] Euro light level control (was: CR headlight bulbs)

2006-01-18 Thread Aaron Lam
The deal with the switches is a bit weird. All 123, 126, and early 124
models with SLS had a different switch (I'm not sure if the vacuum
bleed values are different or not) with different markings instead of
the regular 0-3 numerals. Later 124 models had an entirely different
switch that was used throughout the 124 range, whether SLS equipped or
not. The later switch is preferable because it has check valves
integrated into the switch itself and the numbers are on the trimpiece
(versus the switch) so they light up at night.

Re: [MBZ] Maintenance items on 126 -- M103

2006-01-18 Thread Dave M.

:)

Say WHAT? I hope you're thinking of the 115 diesels, on a 123 the oil filter
couldn't be easier. Well okay theres a bunch of vacuum crap right there too but
aside from that its pretty stinkin easy. A '96 Dodge Dakota v8 is MUCH harder
which is why I don't change the oil in my Dakota...

If it is like the 420 and 560 126's, the fuel filter is next to the fuel
pump by the tank. It is accessible from under the car.

2006-01-18 Thread Brian Chase
You're kidding. These well-designed autos have the oil pan vulnerable to
turfing if I ever bottom out? That disappoints me.

I know the feeling of having this - on my '68 Coronet I had a deep-sump oil
pan put on when I had that engine rebuilt. It hangs a couple inches below
the cross-member (looks cool - I still haven't entirely grown up). But it's
a very skiddish feeling to know that if I take a road at higher speed with
dips in it, it could be a real problem. I always wanted to fashion a thick
aluminum shield.

Take it to a, gasp!! dealer close by and have them do a basic oil change
etc. Can't cost an arm and a leg and should give you a bit of piece of mind
to start out.

We have two adorable black Bombay kittens (minipanthers), both of whom love
to jump up on the kitchen counter. We keep a water squirter handy as a
deterrent. It's cost-effective (cheap), humane, and highly effective. You
should see the look on the cat's face when we merely threaten him with the
water bottle. BTW, I should add that they both drink from a Drinkwell Pet
Fountain (highly recommended) and love to play in the sink while I am
brushing my teeth. Therefore, there have been NO traumatic side effects
from the regular jolts of H2O.

Re: [MBZ] mistakes a diesel owner should not make

2006-01-18 Thread Curt Raymond
My family has always had a designated "cat gun" with which to dispatch cats.
It'd get used when we had a nuisence cat, like the stray that wouldn't come in
and live inside but liked to poop on my Dad's car or when a cat is sick and
dying and needs putting out of its misery. Very humane thing the cat gun. I
used it once on a dog that got hit by a car in front of our house, thing was in
such terrible shape I don't know what was keeping it alive but I couldn't bear
to see it like that.

I was amazed when I went to college and somehow got talking about the cat gun
and a girl I went to school with was screaming at me and calling me all sorts
of terrible things for shooting cats, she thought they should be "put to
sleep". I told her thats what I was doing. Some people's kids...

Not your fault - I started this one with my "CO2 powered pellet gun"
comment, which I still think is funny. It's just a shame that "some"
reacted
so strongly to a joke.

At least I didn't start this one with a "poison cat food" comment

On a more serious cat note - they are so prevalent around here that the
city
puts out baited traps all the time and I don't see anyone lining up at
the
animal shelter to adopt cats. Wonder what happens to THOSE cats??
Maybe
the member who reacted so strongly would like a few hundred shipped to
his
or her house?

Relative to the 300CD turbodiesel coupes of later vintage (1982 - 1985), the
plain diesel 300CD (1978 0- 1980) had a much nicer burlwood (not zebrano)
dash.

I ran across a fairly well gutted Wrangler (engine wise) a couple

transfer case. Kept thinking the same thing. "Wonder how a MB Diesel

[MBZ] Maintenance items on 126 -- M103

2006-01-18 Thread Donald Snook
I will be flying out to Tampa this Friday for my Rendezvous with my new
car. The seller is meeting me at the airport. He will have title in
hand and I will have check to present to him. Here's is my question.

I think one thing that may cause an early engine replacement is the exposed
oil pan on a 123. I looked at a 240D last year and the claim was it had a
new engine at 150k because the previous owner ran over something in the road
and punctured the oil pan.

Does the 1994/95 'facelifted' trunk on the 124 look any better to
you? I think it looks a LOT nicer than the 1986-93 versions. Note that

I'm not sure. The offense to my eye is the 'low-entry' trunk
style, especially when coupled with the angled rear opening
and the associated cat's-eye taillights. And right now nearly
_everything_ is that way. Ugh.

I only look at mine from the front - can't see the rear end that way!

Sadly that doesn't work for me, I always see the rear in the garage.

Roger,

I put a set of stock 16" S Class wheels from a 2003 model on my 1985 300D. You
can find a set of 4 complete with tires on Ebay for 3-400 dollars depending
upon the condition of the tires. My fitment required a set of adapters which I
also found on Ebay. The seller's name was something like "Ernie's". Everybody
that sees it comments on how good it looks. Some have even asked if it was a
new car! It was the best $600.00 I spent in a while.

Without knowing the offset (ET), hard to tell if they will fit or not.
The W126 takes an offset of around 25.

I bought some tires with wheels a few years ago and while the tread
was fine, they were sidewall checked and lasted only about a year
before I had an internal separation. Wouldn't do it again.

Price seems OK for now but the shipping seems awfully high.

Well, I happen to have a stout Ford V8 that I am uncertain as to what to do

Re: [MBZ] CR report on headlight bulbs

2006-01-18 Thread Dave M.
That's an interesting problem, one that I've thought of but don't
often encounter here in the flatlands. On a W124, there is a factory
solution - the "light range" adjuster. This is a rotary dial next to
the headlight switch, with 4 level positions. The idea is that with
the car fully loaded, the rear end sags and the lights will be too
high. So you turn them down with the rotary dial! Neat idea, eh?
That's why the factory Euro light assmblies have a vacuum connection
for the diaphragm inside.

I've been using my Euro lights without this system hooked up, but just
this week I finally got around to installing the level/range adjusting
system. Basically this involves pulling 3 vacuum tubes (source, left,
and right) and plugging them into the switch, and new trim bezel. It's
a lot easier with the dash removed (I was changing the ACC vac pods).
I'll post photos when it's done. Parts needed are the rotary
switch/dial, trim bezel, and assorted vacuum plumbing.

Schematics, and some more info, is on the 124 CD-ROM, section 82-4011.
There used to be a nice writeup on the web for the 124 level control
installation, but it appears to be gone now. Here's a different one,
not as good, scroll to the bottom of the page:

http://www.mbca.org/pages/Star/articles/w124.htm

I plan to set the '1' position as normal, allowing a 'high' position
and two 'lower' positions. Note there's a different switch (and specs)
for cars with SLS.

The same setup is available for the W123, btw, the part numbers are in
the Euro EPC. Won't work with the 'round' headlights, of course.

:-)

Re: [MBZ] mistakes a diesel owner should not make

2006-01-18 Thread Tom Hargrave
Not your fault - I started this one with my "CO2 powered pellet gun"
comment, which I still think is funny. It's just a shame that "some" reacted
so strongly to a joke.

At least I didn't start this one with a "poison cat food" comment

On a more serious cat note - they are so prevalent around here that the city
puts out baited traps all the time and I don't see anyone lining up at the
animal shelter to adopt cats. Wonder what happens to THOSE cats?? Maybe
the member who reacted so strongly would like a few hundred shipped to his
or her house?

Thanks,

Without knowing the offset (ET), hard to tell if they will fit or not.
The W126 takes an offset of around 25.

I bought some tires with wheels a few years ago and while the tread
was fine, they were sidewall checked and lasted only about a year
before I had an internal separation. Wouldn't do it again.

Price seems OK for now but the shipping seems awfully high.
