I didn't know that was what the late Triumph triples were called, thanks. The
early CBRs were called that as well so I guess there could be some confusion

that was my first thought. I haven't tried switching them because the wires
are stiff and seem to be going where they're meant to be - but I did consider

Shoot, I was hoping that wouldn't be necessary...
Well after doing the compression test and checking the spark a new problem has
developed.
When I tried to start after those tests the bike began to backfire.

So the backfiring is not an issue. I'm an idiot.
Checked the ignition timing on cyl1 was spot on.
Decided to check the regularity of ignition on the other cylinders. 2 and 3
appear to have intermittent drops in spark.
Going to swap the coils to see if it switches.
That's a pricey part...

Hey thanks for the quick responses! :) I'm in upstate NY near Rochester.
For this first time I would do the carb cleaning etc at a shop until I
learned how to do it my self for future cleanings. I really want to learn
how to do everything on the bike my self (I plan on making this a hobby of

good and protect them from further weather. a local weld or muffler shop
Did it have old gas in the tank? If so you just ran a bunch of varnish
through your carbs, so go get some seafoam and run it through the next two
or three tank fulls. Also if you figuratively run the crap out of it,
you will do so litterally as well. Wind it up and roll off throttle so it

+1 they can braze some new metal on if the pipes are thin or patch them if
there are holes.

brazing steel is a bag idea, especially if its been coated (ie the chrome
from the factory). much better off tig welding a patch on... but not
everybody can tig...

Did you test ride it? If it runs ok for a test ride, it's easily worth 1200.
Check the tires for dry rot, of they both shows those telltale cracks that's
about 300 bucks, then offer a little less. But that's very similar to my bike
and I paid 1300. Two new tires and rebuild of clutch and a turn
I know you can't braze over hard chrome plating (can't paint either), but
he said that it was really rusty and we were talking about sanding down to
bare metal.

brazing works best on copper and nickle based metals (copper, brass,
bronze, ect). brazing to ferrious metals does not work as well, but any
weld or muffler shop should at least have a MIG welder and somebody that
can use it. would work MUCH better then braze. but if all you can get your

You're probably looking at the cross overs - the rusty part of the exhaust
system than connects the two mufflers. normally rusty

That was my intuitive keyboard buddy Swype. I was merely pointing out that
sometimes instead of rebuilding the carbs, you can treat them with seafoam. I
recently did that and my bike was much better afterwards. One important tip.
Whenever you are parking the bike for a few days or more to run
I didn't even know what seafoam was! lol Thanks for the tip, I'll probably
just start with that!
I'm going back sunday or monday to give it one last look (forgot to check
the condition of the spark plugs) and test drive and if I'm satisfied with
it I think I'm gonna buy it :)

Welcome! The 650 Nighthawks are great machines.
The carb cleaning isn't bad, as long as you don't split the racks. The
worst part will be getting them out and installing them again! Tight
squeeze.
Try Seafoam, first. A double strength dose in a fresh full tank of high
test and don't be gentle
I'll check them out. Thanks
After I switched the coils: running problem persists but the timing light
showed regular firing for all 4 cylinders. I guess I'll switch back and retest.
Decided just for the hell of it to check compression again. All cylinders are
pushing 120psi which as far as I
Well if this last hot reading of the compression is right I'll just clean the
carbs again when I've got the rest pulled off I guess.
Wanted to retest the compression since 120 is a little low and, even though it
should run, I was suspicious. Drove for 10 min then came back and threw the
tester
It is sounding like Carb sync. Little screw between carbs that has to be
within 1/8 turn of exact. That gives hesitation big time. I waited a long
time before correcting mine but once done it was excellent. Be sure no boot
leaks first though.
