Re: [Origami] Discount coupons for the Practical | Puzzle | Play Origami Convention!

2022-04-25 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
I wanted to remind you, the *First Practical Origami Convention - POC1*
will be this weekend, through Zoom: Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1.
Read all about it here: https://www.mixily.com/event/2429968482883703913

I now only have a couple of 25% *discount coupons* (that's $10 USD off!)
and want to give them all away ASAP; that's why I made it easier for you
(read below). No raffles, if you follow the steps then you'll get one of
the coupons.

1. Fill out the "Models for using rather than only looking at" form. This
time, once is enough: https://forms.gle/DoChnjjrWEU8C6VT7
2. After that, email me stating you wish one of the coupons: gerardo(a)
neorigami.com

About the last field, which asks for a couple of pictures of models of the
creator, you can go ahead and browse for them on the web and social media,
download the pictures, and use them for the field. There's no problem with
that, since we'll keep the images private and won't repost them anywhere.

You can fill the form with information of the creators listed below.
Please, make sure in the very form that someone else hasn't beat you to it.
Or, if you know other creators that also fit the profile and still aren't
on the list, go ahead and add them.

Akiko Yamanashi
Ángel Ecija
Chris K. Palmer
Chrissy de "Paper Kawaii"
Didier Boursin
Evi Binzinger
Jannie Van Schuylenburg
Makoto Yamaguchi

Jorge Jaramillo
Paula Versnick

[Origami] United to Fold (UnFold) gathering this Saturday

2022-03-30 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
 This Saturday, April 2, 10:30 - 13:00 (New York) / 15:30 - 18:00 (London)
/ 20:00 - 22:30 (New Delhi), there will be a United to Fold - UnFold
gathering. You are all welcome to join; it's through the Zoom platform.
Three volunteers will teach how to fold each a different simple or
intermediate model. After that, everyone is divided into smaller groups
just to meet people from different countries that share one common
interest: origami!

If you would like to attend, and you still aren't a part of the
Foldeas/UnFold email list, email me. I will ask you to first add me among
your contacts and whitelist my email address; I'll provide a guide

[Origami] Origami models for using rather than only looking at?

2022-03-28 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
*HELLO EVERYONE*

We often hear about figurative (or representational) and abstract (or
geometric) origami in everyday conversations within the community, as well
as in big projects and events. But in this occasion, the Community for
Creators CfC is trying to find out who and how many have designed origami
models for using rather than only looking at (e.g. for playing, such as
paper airplanes and puzzles, for putting on, such as accessories including
headgear, and for other tasks, such as different containers and other
practical models, etc). If you know about–or are able to find general
information of–living origami creators that have designed at least five of
this type of models, please help us by filling the following form:
https://forms.gle/DoChnjjrWEU8C6VT7

Those who do help out, will receive free diagrams and photo-diagrams *as a
token of appreciation!* You can read the details in the introduction of the
form.

We appreciate your help very much!

*Once you receive the gift, please keep it to yourselves... don't share it
with anyone nor post it anywhere; we ask you to respect our wishes. We will
also send the gift to those who have already filled the form... no worries
and thank you .

[Origami] Rails, slides or tracks?

2022-01-03 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
So about a month ago I was asking for your help to spot different models of
chests of drawers. Thanks to you, I made a list of over ten of them from
around the world. Thank you very much!

Now, some days ago I created a new one.

*Picture:* https://photos.app.goo.gl/jBPqn6egZryjRZYG6

*Animated GIF:* https://photos.app.goo.gl/xfc3ST1TNxe6FwDq7

With the name, I want to emphasize the fact that its body (carcass) is not
made of stacked boxes. I'm thinking about naming it: *Organizer with
Drawers and*... But, as a not-native English speaker, I don't know if I
should end the name with "rails", "slides" or "tracks". I'm referring to
those elements inside the organizer's body that allows the drawers to
connect and slide in and out. Do you see them in the animated GIF? So which
of the three options is it?

You can reply through the list or in private to my email address if you
prefer: gerardo(a)neorigami.com

Thank you in advance.

Re: [Origami] Origami chests of drawers?

I wanted to insist with the question I had asked on Saturday, December 5.

Do any of you know of any other models of chests of drawers aside from the
following?

1. "Drawers" by Hanaoka Jidai in NOA Newsletter 33.
https://www.giladorigami.com/origami-database-book/3932/NOA-Newsletter-33

2. Martin Wall's "Chest of Drawers" in BOS Booklet 12.

3. "Chest of Drawers" by Satoshi Takagi in NOA Magazine 415.

4. "Drawer Box" by Franco Pavarin in Origami Scatole e Contenitori.
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/916XepMUNAL.jpg

5. Both chests of drawers by Akiko Yamanashi, one in Dutch Origami
Convention 1996 and the other one in her book "Origami Box".

6. "Modular Case - Drawers" by Luciano Petino in e Adesso vi Rompo le
Scatole - QQM 62.
https://www.giladorigami.com/origami-database-book/3496/e-Adesso-vi-Rompo-le-Scatole---QQM-62-by-Luciano-Petino

7. The different models with drawers by Chrissy on https://paperkawaii.com

8. "Pencil Box" by Laura Kruskal.

9. "Three-Drawer Organizer" (2012) by me.
https://neorigami.com/neo/media/k2/galleries/669/Organizador-de-Tres-Cajones-4.jpg

Aside from that, does anyone know if various sheets are needed to fold just
the body–or carcass–of Hanaoka Jidai's model?

[Origami] Origami chests of drawers?

2021-12-04 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Hello everyone.

I'm looking for models of chests of drawers that I haven't seen. These are
the ones I have:

*Pull Out Drawers*, by Chrissy from Paper Kawaii
https://www.paperkawaii.com/long-origami-pull-out-drawers-instructions-%e2%99%a5/

*Chest of Drawers*, by Chrissy from Paper Kawaii
https://www.paperkawaii.com/origami-chest-drawers-tutorial/

*Tower of Drawers*, by Chrissy from Paper Kawaii
https://www.paperkawaii.com/origami-tower-of-drawers-tutorial/

*Chest of Drawers*, by Martin Wall
https://snkhan.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=125454#p125454

*Chest of Drawers*, by Akiko Yamanashi: It's the one on picture on the
bottom left
https://www.origami-shop.com/images/Image/origami-decorative-balls-and-rings-1-1.jpg
(*By the way, is the carcass–or body–of the chest a modular?*)

*Three-Drawer Organizer* (2012), by me
https://neorigami.com/neo/media/k2/galleries/669/Organizador-de-Tres-Cajones-4.jpg

Now, according to Gilad's Origami Database and The Origami Database, there
are also the following chests of drawers.

*Box with drawers*, by Luciano Petino, and in e Adesso vi Rompo le Scatole
- QQM 62 by Luciano Petino

*Chest of Drawers*, by Satoshi Takagi, and in NOA Magazine 415

*Drawers*, by Hanaoka Jidai, and in NOA Newsletter 33

Can any of you please provide me a picture of any of those three models?

Aside from those, do you know of any other models of chests of drawers?

gift wrapping technique explained in one of the last pages of *Complete
Origami* by Eric Kenneway. Here's a picture:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/Ua5bFeJdeyxJPZJ56

No one knew back then who was the creator, and Kenneway only mentions in
the book that it's popular among us and that it was taught at the Origami
Center of America. I'll probably teach a variation of the technique soon,
and I prefer giving the proper credit. That's why I wanted to ask if there
is any new information about the gift wrapping technique and its creator.

[Origami] An origami coffee filter, hazards of certain laboratory filter papers?

2021-10-19 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Hi everyone. Two weeks ago I asked here through the list where to get a
biggish sheet of filter paper. Thanks to your answers, I was able to find a
58 x 58 cm (approximately 23 x 23 in) sheet at a chemical products shop.
When searching, I learned that there's a wide variety of filter papers with
different characteristics, many of them used in different types of
laboratories for different purposes.

The problem is, this shop actually doesn't know anything about the filter
paper they're offering me. They can't tell me it's characteristics and use
(its data sheet); not even its brand!

My intention is to use the paper to try to make an origami coffee filter
(practical origami). But I don't want to make myself or others sick by
tasting the coffee from my filter. That's why I ask those of you who know
about laboratories and their filter papers: *can drinking coffee made from
certain types of laboratory filter papers be hazardous for humans?*

As always, you can reply to me privately instead of directly through the
email list if you prefer. In that case, here is my email address: gerardo(a)

Thank you in advance.

[Origami] What kind of shops sell biggish sheets of filter paper?

2021-10-04 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Hi everyone. I'd like to fold filter paper, the kind that's used for things
like coffee filters. What kind of shops sell biggish sheets, at the very
least squares of 18 x 18 cm (7 1/6 x 7 1/6 in), although bigger would be
better. It looks like the most common presentation of filter paper is in
the shape of 12.5 x 12.5 cm (5 x 5 in) circles.

It's my first time looking for filter paper. That's why ask. If you prefer,
you can answer me privately.

Thank you all.

[Origami] "Boxed Fortune Teller" at the BOS Autumn Vcon

2021-09-10 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
I just wanted to tell everyone I'll be giving one of the workshops at the
BOS Autumn Vcon in just two days: this Sunday, September 12. It's titled *Boxed
Fortune Teller*.

I will be teaching everyone how to turn a paper fortune teller into a box,
but we'll do more than that. Through the workshop, we will be reminiscing
our own childhoods and how the fortune teller links the past of many of us.

I hope you join us. If you do, I ask you to please follow these diagrams,
especially made for the workshop, so you can bring a fully-made fortune
teller with the colors, the messages, and everything! You'll need one
because we'll be playing a particular version of the fortune teller game at
the start of the workshop, and you won't have time to make one once we
start:
*Click here for the fortune-teller diagrams made by Masao and Gerardo G.
*

EXTRA-CREDIT for those who make it from a ripped sheet of a large spiral
notebook!

EXTRA-EXTRA-CREDIT for those of you who think of a creative and fun
yes-or-no question about their own future for when we play! For example,
I've always wanted to know... will I ever become the very first cowboy
space clown of the future capital of Mars 樂? Now, isn't that a good
question ?

By the way, since this workshop will be more participative than usual, I
also invite you to activate your webcams during that hour.

[Origami] Dry folding 240 g/m² Stardream paper?

2021-08-12 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
 *HI EVERYONE*

Have any of you dry folded 240 g/m² Stardream paper? Do you know if it's
folds/creases get a kinda cracked/wrinkled look if it isn't scored first? I
pretend to fold a box with it. To be exact, my own creation *Shadow Box*:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/aF5pQxFiaHU5V8A36

I have only dry folded the 120 g/m² Stardream paper, but not the heavier
ones; that's why I ask. I have also dry folded, without scoring, a 200 g/m²
different type of poster board (Cartulina Artesanal), which folds/creases
don't end up looking cracked/wrinkled, but in my experience that's actually
very uncommon. So, do I have to score the 240 g/m² Stardream paper?

[Origami] An online course in Spanish to make origami lamps

2021-07-15 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Here is the webpage translated to English by Google:
https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=es=en=https://www.domestika.org/es/courses/117-creacion-de-lamparas-de-origami-con-papel

Domestika is a Spanish-language platform for different online courses,
mostly hands-on. On the platform I found a for-profit-course, on how to
make origami lamps. It sounds great, and I'm happy for the teacher. Her
name is Estella Moreno, whose nickname is "Cartoncita" (Little Cardboard).
Looks like she makes different paper and cardboard projects professionally.

Judging from the webpage, most lamps in the course seem to be made from a
combination of pleat folds, which I guess aren't intellectually protected,
but she does mention modulars in the promotional video, and she shows a
couple. The only one I know by name is *Electra* by David Mitchell, which
she shows more than once.

Maybe she asked for authorization from the respective creators to teach how
to fold the modulars; I don't know. She at least mentions that, as part of
the course, she presents different origamists that have influenced her.

I thought it was important to mention the course here and my concern of a
possible unauthorized use of models in a commercial setting. Sorry, I
couldn't say that much about it; all I have is the little information
provided on the promotional webpage and video. Maybe, someone else can
inquire further or even contact the teacher or Domestika.

Best wishes.

Re: [Origami] Now Novelty Purse

2021-07-09 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
David Mitchell asked me the favor of showing evidence of *Novelty Purse*
being created by Mr. Yoshizawa. As I mentioned, my only proof is *Secrets
of Origami: The Japanese Art of Paperfolding* (1971) by Robert Harbin.

In August, last year, I sent through the O-list a question with the
following subject line: "The name of these tato and are they all really
traditional?". Among others, Matt Green replied privately and sent me a
picture from a page of his copy of the book, which states what I mentioned.
I don't ask him which page.

For some unknown reason, I'm not able to download his picture, but I was
able to take a partial screenshot of it. I'm attaching it to this email.
Hmmm... now that I look carefully, it seems to say "Akira Yoshijawa" wit a
"j".

Cheers.

Re: [Origami] Implications of the term 'Traditional' and call for feedback

2021-07-08 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
In her email, on Monday the 5th, *Lisa B. Corfman* mentioned we need a
world-wide accepted definition of the concept "traditional origami". Lisa
suggested to start by asking different origami platforms for general input,
and then ask world-wide origami societies to come to an agreement embodied
in a detailed document. She also asked if all traditional models "are in
the creative commons".

Hi Lisa. I think a good way to get an official definition is just how you
proposed. I do wonder if there will be enough interest from the platforms
and societies, but I do hope there will be! It makes me think about
initiatives like the First International Origami Copyright Meeting, in
Tokyo 2008.

In his reply, that same day, *Hans Dybkjær* explained how "Creative
Commons" is different from "free access", but I'd like to say a bit more
about that. I think Lisa you're confusing "Creative Commons" with "public
domain". Creative Commons is an organization which has mainly designed
premade licenses for creative works. There's a variety of them, in case an
author wishes to attach one of them to their copyright-protected work
https://creativecommons.org/

Now, public domain relates to creative works that aren't protected by
copyright for different reasons. It could be, for example, because the
author passed away long enough for it to stop being protected by copyright
law or because the author simply donated his work to the public domain.

This won't be the agreed definition we're looking for, but I would like to
propose one anyway:

Traditional origami refers to models that were created before the XX
century and whose creators are globally unknown. Such models are of the
public domain. In that sense, *Horse and Rider*, created by Adolff Senff
around the early XIX century, isn't traditional origami since its creator
is actually known; but it probably belongs to the public domain anyway.

Many models have been erroneously stated as traditional origami, even
though they aren't that old and their creators aren't globally unknown. For
example, *Novelty Purse* created by Akira Yoshizawa (1911 - 2005), which
diagrams are included in *Secrets of Origami* (1971) by Robert Harbin, is
hinted to be a traditional tato with no reference to Mr. Yoshizawa in *Complete
Origami* (1987) by Eric Kenneway. To avoid spreading false claims about the
traditional character of a model, it is important to research, but also ask
extensively within different origami communities, as well as verify the
sources of the received information.

YouTube is a very bad source for researching traditional origami since it
has many false claims regarding different models. The following two
webpages are good places to start inquiring:

*The Public Paperfolding History Project* by David Mitchell:
http://www.origamiheaven.com/historyindex.htm

*Model of the Month* by David Petty:
https://britishorigami.info/academic/davidpetty/mom/model_of_the_month_choice.htm

Continuing with my email, *Hans* had offered his own definition about
traditional origami. From the looks of it, we actually already disagree in
a couple of things . I state that the model's creator MUST be globally
unknown for it to be declared traditional, while Hans says it's USUALLY the
case (but not always). Aside from that, Hans declares that, with time, new
models will turn into traditional origami; I disagree with that as well.
Just because a model becomes part of the public domain, it doesn't mean it
is now traditional as well. Traditional origami is related to the public
domain, but that doesn't mean they are synonymous. For example, if we take
into consideration the Argentinian and the Japanese copyright law, in only
16 years the models created by Ligia Montoya and those created by Michio
Uchiyama will be included in the public domain, but that won't turn them
into traditional origami. In that sense, I consider "traditional origami"
as a group of models within a set historical time frame.

In his own reply, on the day after, *David Mitchell* stated his desire for
the abandonment of the term "traditional origami". I don't agree with that,
but I certainly do agree with our common disapproval regarding the use of
the term "traditional origami" as a way to get away with the lack of
research related to the creators and their deserving credit. Now, David's
reply does leave me with a very important question which I hope some of you
can help me with: *Which were the first published appearances of the word
"traditional" in regard to origami, and how exactly was the word used?* I
think this would be very useful in the construction of a definition like
the one Lisa is asking for!

OK, I don't want to make this email any longer, but I wanted to finish
mentioning that David Lister–yes, one more David, but not just any David–wrote
the following, which is also related to this conversation:
https://britishorigami.info/lister/100_trad_models.php

Cheers!

and Claire Landre helped with information. Thank you very much!

I also exchanged emails with Doc. O'Hanlon. There was a contact button on
his website. This is what I conclude from everything I know up to now:

*Toshio Chino*, created *Rabbit* from a bird base. You can find the
diagrams on the NOA booklet for the instructor certificate:
https://www.amzn.com/4931297048

*Kunihiko Kasahara*, knew the model and made a VARIATION, also named
*Rabbit*, from more or less the pig base. Aside from the different bases,
they share basically the same folding process. He states his model is based
on Mr. Chino's in his book *Origami Made Easy*: https://amzn.com/0870402536

*Stephen O'Hanlon*, basically created the same model as Mr. Kasahara. Their
only difference is that he valley-folds a tip while Mr. Kasahara sinks it,
but in both cases that tip ends up hidden after you fold the model in half.
In his email Doc. O'Hanlon told me he might have learned the model as a
child and, many years later, subconsciously remembered the process,
thinking he was creating the model.

That's what I know for now, and that's enough for me. From now on, I'll
state that the attached *Rabbit* is a variation of a model of the same name
by Toshio Chino, and to be exact, it was Kunihiko Kasahara who made that
variation.

Cheers *; )*

[Origami] Is this Rabbit by Kunihiko Kasahara or by Stephen O'Hanlon?

2021-06-19 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Hi everyone.

A friend and I were in a discussion. He stated that the rabbit I'm
attaching is by Kunihiko Kasahara, and he learned how to fold it about 25
years ago from one of Mr. Kasahara's books, but he doesn't remember which
one. I instead declared it's by Stephen O'Hanlon. Here are diagrams on Mr.
O'Hanlon's website: http://www.fishgoth.com/origami/anidiag.html

Wait a minute... to the right of the picture of the *Rabbit* folds it says:
"(...) This design owes a lot to the origami of Kunihiko Kasahara (...)".
So, what does that mean? Might it just be a variation of a rabbit model by
Mr. Kasahara? I looked on Gilad's Origami Page for rabbit models created by
Mr. Kasahara. It seems like he created more than one, but unfortunately
most of them don't include pictures on the website:
https://www.giladorigami.com/origami-database/Rabbit%20Kunihiko%20Kasahara

I also found instructional videos teaching how to fold the rabbit claiming
it was created by Mr. Kasahara. I'm not linking them here because they
don't mention being authorized by Mr. Kasahara to upload those videos.
Unfortunately, they don't say from which book is the model from. And I
found diagrams in Japanese for the model through a Google Image search, but
I think it's pirated content, so I won't link it here either. I couldn't
know from what book did those diagrams come from. The diagrams are in
color, the steps are in blue and white and there's a photograph of the
finished model: a white rabbit on a purple background with the inside of
his ears in blue.

So that's why I'm now contacting all of you. Can you please help us solve
this mystery? Do any of you have proof that Mr. Kasahara created the model?
For example, do you own the book with his diagrams? Or, do you know what
Mr. O'Hanlon meant with that phrase I quoted above? Or, can you at least
help me contact him?

Thank you in advance! If you prefer, you can respond in private to my email

[Origami] UnFold's first anniversary!

2021-06-09 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
I noticed just now it'll be UnFold's 1st birthday! We were only 20 in our
first gathering: June 6, 2020 殺. Now, were usually 70 or more at each
gathering!

You're invited to wear a *party hat* or *anything festive/wacky*. I'll wear
some colorful glasses and an artificial flower garland on my neck. You can
also have birthday decorations in your background! And of course, your
accessories and decorations can all be made from origami if you prefer!

See the details of Saturday's gathering in the message I sent yesterday.

Re: [Origami] Name of the following models and their creators?

2021-06-03 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Three days ago I emailed the list asking about the names of three models
and their respective creators. Looks like the last one, in hot pink,
is *Tetrahedral
Carbon Atom*, diagrams in pg. 74 of the following book in Japanese:
https://www.gettextbooks.com/isbn/9784416312001/

Now, I found an old message from Anne about the same book here in the
O-list:

> themselves "Project F") to publish works by Shuzo Fujimoto. This is the

*My question is,* who's the creator of the model in pg. 74? Is it Mr.
Fujimoto? Is it Ms. Fuse? Is it the collective "Project F"? Thank you in
advance.

*I also wanted to insist* in regard to the tato, folded from patterned
paper, shown in the first image of my previous message. I still haven't
received any answers. Do any of you know if it's a traditional model or
not? I'd really appreciate some orientation.

[Origami] The name of "Box with Lid 2"

2021-05-24 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
I take the name of models very seriously, being the models intellectual
works. Origami models are a feat.

Now, I'm a bit conflicted about the name of a model: *Box with lid 2* (Caja
con tapa 2) by Philip Shen. It's diagrams are in the book *Papiroflexia
Colección* edited by Vicente Palacios. My conflict is regarding the number
in the name, especially considering that "Box with Lid 1" was created by a
totally different origamist and not Philip Shen.

Here is a fold of the model:
http://www.bibliogami.fr/english/biblio/zoommod.php?nmodele=260=fichebib|nbiblio|26

I wanted to ask you, have diagrams of that same model been published with a
different name? Should I just accept that it's titled *Box with Lid 2*,
honor its name, and use it? What do you know about the it, and what do you
think?

If so, what caused the creation of two names or a single list?

I was asking for the name of a lotus flower model and its creator. Sy Chen
replied that a similar variation is often used in Taiwanese funerals.

Thank you, Sy, and I'm very sorry for your loss.

Does that make the 18 unit variation you posted a traditional model? In
that case can we assume that the 12 unit one that I asked for a variation
of a traditional model, and it basically has no creator?

Re: [Origami] Identifying models

2021-02-16 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Simon asked yesterday to please help him identify some models and their
creators based on the pictures he attached.

I can only identify *Basket* (the yellow fold from Simon's pictures), which
is a model by Akiko Yamanashi, but the handle is usually folded
differently. I'm attaching a picture of a fold I had made of the model some
years ago.

The book *Origami You Can Use* edited by Rick Beech, includes diagrams for
this model, but it says that the creator is unknown. The diagrams in that
book indicates to fold the front and back corners inward. That's how you
and I folded the model *; )*

The diagrams are also in the following book by Akiko Yamanashi:
https://www.yesasia.com/global/asobu-kazaru-tsukau-dezain-origami-3-origami-fuanshi-komono/1004865897-0-0-0-en/info.html

You can see the model in the bottom left corner of the cover. Akiko's
version, which would be the original version, indicates to fold those
corners outwards and then tuck the tip inside, adding a color change in the
front and back of the model.

I learned all this precisely by asking here, through the Origami Mailing
list, seven years ago. I have a copy of Beech's book and wanted to know if
the model was still unknown. Robin Macey answered back telling me all of
this *; )*

currently working in Pearl Academy.

The official session will be on February 6, 10:00 - 12:00 ish (New York) /

[Origami] Playing with a fortune teller

2021-01-26 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Hi everyone.

I looked up a bit about playing with the fortune teller on the web. I found
a lot of information about how to fold it, but not that much about the game
process. Still, I think I got the general idea. Can you please if I got it
right or not?

On each of the outer corners there should be a written word, often the name
of a different color. Inside, there should be written numbers (1 to 8) on
top of each triangle, and beneath each triangle a different fortune.

1. The fortune teller operator asks the fortune tellee to pick one of the
words written on the corners.

2. The operator spells the word out loud and flip-flaps the fortune teller,
once for each letter.

3. Once the operator stops flip-flapping the fortune teller, only four
numbers will be visible inside. He or she will then ask the tellee to pick
one of them.

4. Finally, the operator will unfold the segment that includes the number
given by the tellee and read the corresponding fortune.

Did I get it right?

I also have two questions: (1) can you please give me examples of the
fortunes written on the fortune teller? (2) Does the tellee first asks a
question at the beginning, so the fortune teller can answer it?

If you prefer, you can let me know in private through a message to my email
address or simply answer through the list. Just in case, my email address
is gerardo(a)neorigami.com

Re: [Origami] How to avoid the transparency film from getting scratches?

2020-12-29 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
On Sunday I asked for ideas to protect my sheets of transparency film from
getting scratches. Miranda replied and mentioned the tissue paper sheets
that go between each sheet of transparency film when you buy a box. I also
received a private message of someone who suggested glassine envelopes,
which have been used to protect negatives.

I have a couple of questions. I hope at least one of you can help me out

*1.* If I keep each clipping of transparency film in a *common copy paper*
sleeve, will that avoid the scratches?

*2.* Do I need instead a special kind of paper for the sleeves?

*3.* Is the paper between each sheet of transparency film, in the box,*
tissue paper* (the same used for tissue foil)? Is it *tracing paper*? Is it
glassine? Is it something else?

[Origami] Origami in the Tokyo and Nara prefectures, right after WWII, and the historian Diana Uribe?

2020-12-16 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Diana Uribe is a Colombian historian who's popular due to her media
presence in the country: radio, television, and the web.

You can find some of her old radio episodes on YouTube. Although I should
mention, they are in Spanish. Anyway, there's one in particular I would
like to talk to you about: *Japan History Chapter 12: The reconstruction of
Japan. Returning from the ashes.* https://youtu.be/Xxsql60AZDY

During the episode, Diana Uribe mentions more than once the "useless
trades" with which she refers to different crafts, practiced within the
families of the Tokyo and Nara prefectures, due to incentives from the
mayors' offices. According to the historian, the intention of these crafts
were to keep people occupied, so they could find peace instead of the
despair of their defeat. She mentions origami as one of the "useless
trades".

I'm telling you this because I haven't been able to find any mention of
this in English, on the web, and any reference about it in Spanish seems to
be quoting Diana Uribe. I hope I'm wrong, but I have the feeling that it
really didn't happen. I insistently looked for sources in English about it,
but all I found in regard to Japan, origami, and WWII was Sadako Sasaki's
story.

Do you know anything about what Diana Uribe is talking about? Can you
confirm or disconfirm her claims? Or, if not, can you please help me find
more about it?

I'm including two quotes from web articles that I translated from Spanish.
I have the feeling they took the information from the historian's radio
episode, although they don't state their sources:

"The Japanese began to take advantage of the most adverse situation, the
humiliation, the depression, the low self-esteem generated by the North
American occupation.

On the one hand, the "mayoral incentives" for so-called "useless trades"
began. In the prefectures of Kyoto [Diana Uribe says it's Tokyo, not Kyoto]
and Nara, the two oldest and most traditional cities, the mayors promoted
the production of crafts (origami and painted pottery)."

>From *The Day After: The Reconstruction of Japan* by Solusan.
https://blog.solusan.com/al-dia-siguiente-la-reconstruccion-de-japon.html

"After the two nuclear bombs, first: the god emperor Hirohito ordered his
people to live (despite the shame and disgrace they felt because of the
defeat). Second: The "Mayor's Office" offered "Incentives" from which the
"useless trades" would derive, which consisted in making origami and
crafts, but for what purpose? Maintaining the stimulation of the creative
muscle and, according to the Buddhist doctrine, unemployment is a source of
resentment and bitterness, feelings that they know are dangerous for a
society undergoing reconstruction.

And although it is true that the handicrafts of those Japanese families
were bought (for a small price), the purpose was actually to create a
social network that would keep the spirit afloat, to generate a concept of
unity and solidarity, of community, to strengthen the ties within the
families so that they, and the State consequently, could be well."

>From *On the Reconstruction of Japan and the Useless Trades: Parallels with
COVID-19 *by Gabriel Dary.
https://elspotsm.com/sobre-la-reconstruccion-del-japon-y-los-oficios-inutiles-paralelismos-con-el-covid-19/

I'm REALLY curious about all of this. I hope at least one of you can help
me out. Among other things, I'm curious about the name "useless trades".
Did Diana Uribe propose the name? For some reason I can't imagine the
Japanese calling it that. Also, if it did happen, why is it so difficult to
find other sources about it on the web? If you wish to reply, you can do so
directly through the mailing list or in private to my email address, if you
prefer: gerardo(a)neorigami.com

Woo-hoo! You have NO idea how honored I feel *: )*

Read all about it! http://origamibogota.com/#portfolio

Now my tech question, I'm planning on buying a really economical webcam to
teach origami. I know it's best to pay a bit more, but I'm decided on
buying an economical one. I've narrowed my search to two options. One has a
720x480 resolution and the other one a 640x480 resolution. Does that make a
big difference or is it basically the same thing?

Thank you in advance!

[Origami] Too many folds and the pandemic

2020-11-22 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Before the pandemic I used to take my folds to the children's section of a
public library. I gave it to the librarians, so they could hand them over
to the kids. Now, I have two boxes full of colorful folds because I stopped
visiting the library. Making beautiful folds has become a problem, because
I'm not OK with placing them on the recycle bin. As a way to stop making
the problem worse, I started to fold more often with inappropriate paper,
such as photocopies and printed paper. Many of you have seen me do that at
the online gatherings *; )*

Is that only a problem for me or do you also have a problem due to making
too many beautiful folds and the pandemic?

On a related note, I wanted to mention that when I offered them at the
library, I always wrote somewhere on the fold the name of the model and of
its creator, and even his or her country of origin just as an interesting
bit of information. Many of us has criticized the popular belief that all
origami is traditional origami that just pops out of thin air. That type of
belief fosters things like uploading instructional videos without giving
proper credit, and obviously without authorization, among other actions
many creators aren't OK with.

I strongly suggest writing this type of information on a fold before
handing it over! I write small and on a face that isn't extremely visible,
so not to affect its aesthetics, but visible enough to assume that the
receiver will find the information.

Just my two cents *; )*

[Origami] Please help to cite an article from BOS #125

2020-11-12 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
*HELLO EVERYONE*

I want to quote a phrase about the short lifes of most folds, from the
following article by Robert Lang, on a paper I'm working on
https://britishorigami.info/bo-125-robert-lang-on-wet-folding-part-1-2/

The thing is, I prefer to cite the original source. If you have the issue,
can you help me by answering the following questions?

1, In the magazine, is the article titled "Robert Lang on Wet Folding" or
how exactly is it titled? Please be precise.

2. If the original title is "Robert Lang on Wet Folding" does the author's
name appear somewhere else aside from the title?

3. How exactly does the author's name appear? For example, does it say
Robert J. Lang or simply Robert Lang, without the middle initial?

4. In which page does the article appear or between which pages?

5. If it's in more than one page, in which page does it say: "most folders
accept that origami is folded one minute, crumpled and tossed away the
next"?

[Origami] Old website project about listing what different creators allowed?

2020-10-26 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
*HI EVERYONE*

I'm almost 100% sure that years ago someone mentioned here a project
regarding a website were people could find what a particular creator
allowed in relation to his or her own models. And it was also mentioned
that that project was abandoned.

Did that project really exist or did I dream it all? I tried to find those

If someone can tell me more about it, but more importantly, if someone can
help me find the old messages I'd really appreciate it. You can send me a

Hi everyone

Some exciting news I received recently:

My folded piece was selected for the "Bugarte Film and Visual Arts

plastic works, and is now competing for an award which will be given this
Wednesday: http://bugarte.org/festival-2020/artes-visuales/

And regarding the arts magazine I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, you can
now check it out online if you wish. My folded pieces are on pages 22 and

[Origami] Do you have the book "Origami Sekai no Tori" (Origami, Birds of the World) by Kunihiko Kasahara?

2020-09-30 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
*HELLO EVERYONE*

Does one of you have the book *Origami Sekai no Tori* (Origami, Birds of
the World) by Kunihiko Kasahara? You can find here the cover and models in
the book:

http://origami.jubile.fr/origami/modules/mediatheque/media.php?op=ref1=L.1

If you click on the cover you'll be able to see a bigger image of it.

I was able to contact Mr. Kasahara, I was very interested in the complete
diagrams of his two models *Strutting Peacock* and *Long-tailed Chicken*.
There are only the crease pattern and folding of the base for both of them
in his book *Creative Origami*. Mr. Kasahara was so generous that he took
pictures of the diagrams for both models from his book *Origami Sekai no
Tori* and sent them to me. Unfortunately, the pictures are of very bad
quality.

That's why I'm asking for your help. I don't want to bother Mr. Kasahara
one more time. If you have the book, I can show you Mr. Kasahara's
response, including his pictures, as proof. In exchange, would you please
send me good quality pictures of the diagrams for both models? It would
mean a lot.

I really hope one of you has that book! If that's the case, please send me

[Origami] Folding Together (FoTo) gathering this Saturday

2020-09-29 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
 This Saturday Octobre 3, 11:00 - 1:00ish pm (New York) / 4:00 - 6:00ish pm
(London) / 8:30 - 10:30ish pm (New Delhi), there will be a Folding Together
- FoTo gathering. You are all welcome to join; it's through the Zoom
platform. At each gathering, two volunteers teach how to fold each a
different simple or intermediate model. After that, everyone is divided
into smaller groups just to meet people from different countries that share
one common interest: origami!

If you would like to attend, simply send me a message: gerardo(a)
neorigami.com

At the *September 5* gathering Rosemary, from UK and Italy, taught both the
twist fold (square twist), which is attributed to no one, and *Shell
Envelope* (A *Random Envelope*) created by Paula Versnick.

Christine from the US also taught us that day how to fold *Diamondrose
Squarejumper*, which is a variation by Gerwin Sturm of *Diamond*, a model
created by Caroline Cermak.

And at the *August 8* gathering, Asha from India taught mitre and forage
cap, which are both traditional models.

At that same gathering, Tej who's also from India, taught *Baggi Box*
created by Guissepe Baggi and *Jumpig Frog* created by Michael LaFosse.
With the two models we were to help the frogs jump into their "wells".

Yesterday I also shared with all of you a picture of a flower folded from a
preliminary base and asked for its name and creator.

Anna replied the following: "Given the simplicity of the model, I'm pretty
sure that many people independently discovered that flower design. Putting
it down to a specific creator will be almost impossible".

Thank you Anna for your answer.

Being that the case, I'll be happy with just knowing who has been
attributed as the creator whether on books or on the web and what names
have been given to the flower on those sources.

[Origami] The name of these tato and are they all really traditional?

2020-08-31 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
I shared with you a picture of origami tato and asked for their names and
to please confirm if they were all traditional or not. Thanks to Mathew
Green, I now know that according to the book “Secrets of Origami” (1971) by
Robert Harvin, the one on the bottom of the picture is attributed to Akira
Yoshizawa and titled "Novelty purse".

I wanted to ask you, is there any reason for me to think the book is wrong?
I own a copy of "Complete Origami" (1987) by Eric Kenneway. It has diagrams
for that same tato but the book doesn't attribute it to anyone. That's why
I wanted to ask.

The one on the top of the picture I shared yesterday, is declared a
traditional model according to, once again, "Secrets of Origami" by Harbin.
It's named "Japanese Purse", so I assume many simply call it tato. I can
imagine someone translating "tato" to "Japanese purse".

And I still need help with the tato in the middle of the picture. Might one
of you know if they have specific names other than simply "tato"? Also, are
they both traditional models? Or, if they aren't, who created each one?

Thank you in advance.

[Origami] Knowledge and Curiosity in Origami: Six private classes for ages 10 to 150*

2020-08-15 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
(Sorry if this is the second or third time you receive this message. Not my
intention)

HI EVERYONE

Would you please help me promoting my private classes project? It's a
program of six 90 min live online sessions that I designed thinking mostly
about beginners. The classes are different; I built them to strengthen
skills rather than simply teaching how to fold a couple of models. They
emphasize what is already there (knowledge in origami) but also what can be
done with what is there (curiosity in origami). It's for individual
students and groups of up to six.

Unlike my FoTo gatherings and the Foldeas hands-on presentations, these
classes are not cost-free, but I am making a limited time offer for the
whole six-class program. The offer ends this Wednesday, August 19. And I
also have a good tip to share: the larger the group, the less each one has
to pay.

Help me by inviting your friends and family to participate. They will have
a wonderful and fruitful experience! And, of course, you're invited to
participate as well. Send me a message if you register or know of someone
who does!

You'll find more information about the private classes at
https://tiny.cc/knocu

Please resend this email message to whomever you think can be interested. I
also made a poster for you to share and post on your social media
platforms. Would you? I appreciate it if you ask on your posts for others
to share it as well. Hopefully the poster will multiply, and multiply
again, on the web.

You'll find the poster here: https://tiny.cc/kcposter

[Origami] Foldeas with Leyla Torres (Saturday July 25)

2020-07-13 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
HI EVERYONE

I invited Leyla Torres (OrigamiSpirit) as the next guest speaker of Foldeas:

presentations, each one related–one way or another–to paper folding, by
guest speakers from a wide variety of countries. They are cost-free,
through the Zoom platform.

Saturday July 25, 11:00 - 1:00 pm (New York) / 4:00 - 6:00 pm (London) /
8:30 - 10:30 pm (New Delhi). Limited seating!

The title of Leyla's presentation is "Mindfulness and Creativity with
Origami". At this session:

-Go on a folding journey to open your mind to creative thinking through
paper folding.
-Try a different way of folding, with the spirit of a beginner's mind.
-No previous experience with origami is needed to attend.

About the guest speaker: Leyla has been practicing origami since 1988 and a
member of Origami USA since 1994. For over ten years, Leyla has been
sharing and teaching origami on her well-loved website and youtube channel,
OrigamiSpirit.

Leyla was invited as a special guest to the Pacific Coast Origami
Convention USA (PCOC 2015) and Encuentro Internacional de Origami, México
(2014). In addition, she has conducted paper-folding workshops, in-person
and online classes for young and old, at international origami conventions,
libraries, schools, and businesses in The United States, Europe, and South
America.

Even if you won't attend, would you PLEASE post and share the event's
poster asking others to do the same? Do it right now, don't wait to the
last minute ; )

The guest speaker of the last Foldeas session was Trevas Chuang AKA
Decadent Origamist. During his presentation, he shared different projects
in which he connected origami with world issues and also invited everyone
to participate in his latest one "Kusudama Of Vexatiously Illogical Dreams
(KOVID)". If you missed Trevas's, don't miss Leyla's!

[Origami] Four of my folds showcased by an art gallery!

2020-07-06 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
I wanted to share some personal good news with you all, instead of my usual
(and constant) questions ; )

An art gallery is showcasing four of my folds on their Facebook page! It's
the first time ever a place like this shows some interest in my work =D

https://www.facebook.com/CartaAbiertaG/posts/3392408920853252

https://www.facebook.com/CartaAbiertaG/posts/3399018540192290

This is my comment—which accompanies the four folds—translated to English:

«"Landscape", "Being Sumapaz", "The Mass Production of Members of Society"
and "Sculpting a Crane" raise a question about folding paper: Can this
traditional and mundane practice communicate something about nature,
relationships, power, and the arts? The four pieces emerged from a concern
regarding the potential of the folding practice to move away from
representation and closer to the conceptual-metaphorical. They reveal the
spell of paper, a material that has led me to express and form emotional
ties with it, with folding, people, and the world in general.»

I wanted to ask you a favor if it's OK with you. It would be really helpful
to me as an origamist if a few of you post a comment on any of the two
Facebook posts. What would you say about the four folds I made (good and
bad)? I would like to bring a little more attention to the posts; that's
why I ask you this favor. And yes... it's perfectly OK to make the comment
in English.

You know what?... What happened is a very big deal to me as an origamist : )

[Origami] Do you know about sound and video?

2020-06-30 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Sorry for adding a second topic on the same day.

This kinda has to do with origami. I'm working on an origami-related video.
I recorded the dialogue on separate WAV files. The thing is, I don't have
enough experience so to identify what needs fixing in those files. For
example. in a prior recording of the dialogue, someone told me the
sibilance was excessive, but I had not noticed that before I was told.

I want to know if someone from the list knows something about sound and
video. I would like to share with that person an example of the recordings
and ask him or her if it needs a bit of editing. I know how to use Audacity
a little bit.

If you believe you can help me out, and wish to do so, would you please
reply to this message on the list or privately to my email address? It's

Comment from Juan José (Medellín, Colombia):
"The origami meeting was great. I enjoyed a lot trying to fold the figures.
The first activity was a bit challenging but really fun: I thought I
wouldn`t be able to fold it but what a great thing when I finished first in

Comment from James (Northeast England):
"Thank you for the splendid session yesterday...relaxed, friendly
interaction between yourself and an international group of over twenty
origami enthusiasts.
I particularly liked the way you got different people to teach the basic
windmill base in stages, and also the groups-of-four exercise where even
the quiet people were able to speak, discuss, tackle the problem, show
models, etc., with three others folders.
I've since hunted out a book "Extreme Origami" by Kunihiko Kasahara that
contains chapters dealing with The Pinwheel and Its Best Friends,
Variations on the Pinwheel, and Froebel's Basic Forms, all of which are
relevant to what we were doing with you yesterday.
Two other memories that will stay with me are the Pangolin (Eric Joisel)
shown in our group by Tej, and the large Hummingbird behind Karen's right
shoulder...it did very well to hover in that position for over ninety
minutes!"

See you all Saturday ; )

So, actually Ilan Garibi had created one before me. Along with another
model, he submitted it to the Inter-forum Useful Model Challenge back in
2012. He named his model "Garbage Can". The diagrams were published the
year after in the resulting book: "Practigami". I don't know if someone has
attempted creating a working pedal bin aside from Ilan and me, but I'd love
to know! Does anyone have any information about other origami pedal bins?

I must confess (sorry Ilan) that I wasn't too satisfied with Garibi's
design. That was what moved me to create my own version back in 2013 and I
improved its mechanism in 2015. Now, when I create a model I have
occasionally done something that most origamists don't do: include
non-foldable materials. For example, "Shadow box" includes Plexiglass.
That's also the case with "Pedal bin", it includes some grey board
reinforcements, a single Formica reinforcement, and a coin as well.

Maybe someone else has already created or can create a working origami
pedal bin that doesn't need those materials or that many paper sheets (five
in total). I'd love to see that!

activity was through Facebook and Instagram.

The challenge started on March 31 and the submission deadline was on May
25. There were four categories: (1) basic and traditional, (2)
intermediate, (3) advanced, and (4) creative (not the same as
creating/designing in origami).

Four galleries resulted from the submitted folds:

[Origami] Foldeas with Decadent Origamist: "My Origami Journey"

2020-06-11 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
HELLO

A project emerged from the Frankensteinian method hands-on presentation I
had given over a month ago: "Foldeas: Sharing Ideas Through Origami". It's
a series of hands-on presentations, all of them related to origami, by
guest speakers from a wide variety of countries. The sessions will be once
a month, every four weeks, always on Saturdays, but the time won't always
be the same.

The next one will be on June 20th, 9:00 am (New York) / 2:00 pm (London).
The guest speaker will be Trevas Chuang AKA Decadent Origamist:
https://www.facebook.com/decadentorigamist

He has titled his session: "My Origami Journey", which will be about how
Trevas has integrated origami to his life, his vision, and travels.

If you wish to register, please send me an email message: gerardo(a)
neorigami.com
Do it soon because only less than half the (virtual) seats are available.

Whether you plan to attend or not, I appreciate it if you share and repost
the session's poster on your social media platforms and groups, asking
others to also share and repost it. Thank you in advance and see you at the
session!

Re: [Origami] charging for origami

2020-05-28 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Bonnie asked if it was ethical to offer as gifts folds of Yami Yamauchi's
"Fireworks" to people that make donations of a certain amount to a food
bank.

Bonnie, it totally is ethical. There's a big difference between selling a
fold of someone else's origami model and offering it as a gift as a thank
you for the donation made. You don't have to ask for authorization from the
creator to give your fold of their model as a gift.

The one important thing to have in mind is to please learn to fold those
authored models from legal sources. A pirated book wouldn't be one, just to
give an example.

Cheers!

[Origami] Is Kathleen Weller from the US?

2020-05-24 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Hi everyone.

I'm writing something I hope to get published, so I don't want to get the
details wrong. Kathleen Weller is the creator of a known heart model named
"Flower Heart" also named "Change of Heart". Judging by her name, I'm
assuming she's from the US but I don't know. Can someone please confirm if
I'm right or not? It's important.

If you prefer, you can send your answer exclusively to me: gerardo(a)

Thank you in advance.

[Origami] Ethical practices in origami groups?

2020-05-20 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Looks like I'll be hosting online origami gatherings* : )*

I want to know which are the proper ethical practices in this type of
activities. What I understand for now is, since there's no money involved:

1. It's OK to teach how to fold someone else's model without needing
authorization.

2. It's proper to give the corresponding credits of the model and creator
when teaching that person's model.

What about copies of diagrams and such? What else should I know regarding
ethics in origami groups?

You can write through the list or directly to my email address.

Thank you in advance.

[Origami] "Heart" by Hiroshi Kumasaka

2020-05-18 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Hello.

I was taught a heart model and was told it's by Hiroshi Kumasaka. I want to
confirm if it's truly his model. I take model credits very seriously. I
looked for the model on Gilad's website. It says diagrams of the model were
published in Le Pli 62-63, NOA Kessakusen, NOA magazine #15, and also #66.
Could one of you please show me Hiroshi Kumasaka's heart model in one of
those sources?

Those of you who would like to help me, you can answer through the list or
privately to my email address: gerardo(a)neorigami.com

Thank you in advance.

[Origami] Folding modular models in local meetings?

2020-05-14 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Hi everyone.

I'm here once more with a question ; )

Those of you who fold modular models in local groups, particularly now that
it's done through online video conferencing, do the groups tend to fold all
the units at the same time or one by one?

Thank you in advance. Your answers will help me better shape an idea for an
activity I would like to share in one of the groups.

Re: [Origami] Online origami conference/workshop May 9, 2020

2020-05-12 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Thank you all who helped promote the event! I wanted to let you know
everything went wonderfully well. I had 75 attendants in total, which were
so receptive and participative during the three hours we ended up sharing.
We had people from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia (aside from me), England,
France, Germany, India, Italy, Spain, and the US, among other countries

After the event they sent me messages like these ones:

"I really enjoyed your Zoom class today on "Creating through the
Frankensteinian Method in Origami" and the models you taught. You are a
wonderful and patient instructor!" (Sue Ann Chu)

"Thank you for your event yesterday. It was very enjoyable and you are an
excellent teacher. I look forward to more!" (Andrea Plate)

"loved every minute of the class. It was a creative, thorough,
well-executed class with so much thought-provoking in-depth information.
Thank you" (Carol)

"Many thanks again for offering this 3h workshop which was ever so
interesting! I never thought of an environmental aspect of origami but you
are the living proof... Your explanations were very clear! It must have
been exhausting for you to hold and fold your paper for so long...
congratulations! I did manage to follow, except for your shopping bag
halfway but kept on watching of course. You should organize another Zoom
session". (Èvelyne Papoutsia)

Just that made it all worth it! They have also been posting their comments
on the blog entries Leyla Torres and Sara Adams had made promoting the
event:

https://www.happyfolding.com/blog-online_origami_meetings_2020

https://www.origamispirit.com/2020/05/origami-design-the-frankensteinian-method/

Another attendant, Anindya from India, took the following screenshot from
his smartphone during the event. He's very active on Instagram, you can
check his origami by following @origamist_mandal

So simply... thank you gals/guys for your help! Especially Faye Goldman and
Matt Green; your help was invaluable : )

Re: [Origami] document cameras for origami demo-ing

2020-05-04 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Thank you so much Andrea P. for your question about document cameras to
teach origami online and all the answers explaining how they used a
smartphone instead! I had not thought about that before.

I taught tonight how to fold a model in the GP3 meeting. I used
an android OS smartphone as my webcam. This is how I did it:

1. I installed DroidCam both on the smartphone and my Windows OS laptop.

Smartphone app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dev47apps.droidcam=en

Windows OS: https://www.dev47apps.com/droidcam/windows/

2. I followed this steps:
https://www.digitalcitizen.life/turn-android-smartphone-webcam-windows

3. I attached the phone to the arm of my desk lamp using a rubber band. The
cool thing about that was that I could then use the lamp as a light source
for the paper.

4. I connected the smartphone to my laptop through USB. I didn't need to
but that way I wouldn't have to worry about the phone's battery.

I do have to learn to check the laptop screen every now and then, because
sometimes I wasn't placing the paper in the center of the frame. It'll take
some getting used to : )

Before DroidCam I tried two other apps but I wasn't able to get them to
work: IVcam and IP webcam.

Hope this information helps Andrea or anyone else. I'm really thankful with
the information you've all shared. Before, I was folding on the air or
against a wall, but now I can use this solution for my
conference/workshop... Hooray!

[Origami] Can you help me rehearse the conference/workshop?

2020-05-01 Thread Gerardo @neorigami.com
Hi everyone.

So I've been sharing about the conference/workshop which is scheduled for
May 9, 11:00 - 1: 30 pm (New York) / 3:00 - 5:30 pm (London).

I intend to do a really good job. That's why I want to rehearse it all
before the big day. I want to know if some of you would be willing to help
me by attending my rehearsal, participating, and providing feedback at the
end. I especially want to reach out to the people that are interested in
the topic of the event but can't attend the 9th.

I would talk to you so we can decide a convenient day and time before the
event. It would only be with one, two, or three of you.

If you would like to help me, please answer through the mailing list or
send me a message to my email address: gerardo(a)neorigami.com

Thank you in advance : )
