So 6 photos of mine ready for review on the Pentax gallery

2011-01-19 Thread Ann Sanfedele

I'm gathering that you guys that are in already are among those
voting as to whether I get in the gallery?

I never thought I'd be doing this at all so forgive me
if this is a topic that has been widely rehashed.

also, guess I can't vote for others myself if I don't yet have at least
one photo in the Gallery - would seem right.

No, last I heard, you don't need to have at least one in the gallery in order
to vote.
If you choose to put up the 6 images on this list, I'll understand. I'll do my
best to judge fairly and not let my admiration for you temper my judgment. I'll
try, at least.

Pentax Gallery observation - this should be safe from controversy

2011-01-19 Thread Ann Sanfedele

so I started voting...
btw it turned out I'd been in for 4 years... had forgotten I was.

Glad that it is anonymous on all fronts... but after spending about 45
minutes doing the voting chore
I wondered if the site automatically screened out the voters submissions
- since I didnt see mine come up...
though I would think that wouldn't happen and there are just s many
submissions being made.

What I did notice was that out of perhaps 75 images I looked at , only
two were taken with film cameras and scanned,
and only one was taken with the ist D.

I was thinking a lot of photogs got the new K-X or the K-5 or 7 under
the tree and were submitting recent stuff in a

love fest for the new gear.

Anyway, at the moment I'm kind of fascinated.

   Hi Daniel,

It took quite a while. More than three weeks, easily. I was beginning
to give up hope when I looked that last time, in fact, and was thinking
about writing an email to the folks who run the gallery to see if I'd
done something wrong.

  Many thanks, Boris!

I'm frequently filled with doubts about my photography when I see the
work of others. Usually, when someone who isn't a photographer says
something nice about my work, I'm thinking about what's not so great
about the shot -- Well, it could've been better if I'd done this, and

This was a really encouraging thing for me.

  Thanks again, Boris.

It is nice to have folks like you and the rest on PDML to turn to for
guidance and an honest critique. I've had some generally bad and/or
uninteresting photos get praise from people simply because they don't
want to discourage me. There's no harm in that -- and it is nice to
know that some folks just want to be encouraging. But, as with writing,
you really need a cold-eyed appraisal of your photography if you ever
want to improve it.

So, getting good reviews from guys like you is a little more meaningful,
and much appreciated.

very nice Walter. I have not even figured out how to be allowed to
submit there.

I believe the current process is you have to request a Pentax Artist
ID, and then you can upload your submission. After you've uploaded it,
it goes through some kind of initial screening and is then voted on in a
peer review.

I'm not sure who is considered your peer ... anyone who has received a
Pentax Artist ID? or only those who have had a submission accepted?

It started out the photo had to be taken with a Pentax camera AND a
Pentax Lens, but I believe they now allow photos taken with a Pentax
camera and a third party lens.

Which brings up another question ...

Why are they called THIRD party lenses? Shouldn't they be second party
lenses, or if not, who is the second party?

I believe the current process is you have to request a Pentax Artist ID,
and then you can upload your submission. After you've uploaded it, it goes
through some kind of initial screening and is then voted on in a peer
 review.

I'm not sure who is considered your peer ... anyone who has received a
Pentax Artist ID? or only those who have had a submission accepted?

It started out the photo had to be taken with a Pentax camera AND a Pentax
Lens, but I believe they now allow photos taken with a Pentax camera and a
 third party lens.

Which brings up another question ...

Why are they called THIRD party lenses? Shouldn't they be second party
lenses, or if not, who is the second party?

Re: Submission accepted to Pentax Gallery

2010-10-26 Thread Walter Gilbert

  Thank you, Bran!

The way I went about it was to send a request for an Artist Code to
photogall...@pentax.com. It took a while -- almost a week -- but I
finally got one. There'll be a URL in the reply that'll take you to a
page where you submit your images.

You'll want to be sure to read the FAQ's first, of course:
http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/artist?action=artistFaq

It's been nearly a month since I submitted my photos, and I just found
out today that the first was accepted. The rest (six more) are still in
Ready for Review purgatory, and I expect it'll take a while longer
yet. You don't receive any kind of notification that they've been
accepted. You just have to keep checking in every so-often to see what
the status is on your images.

Hope this helps! And thanks again for the kind word.

Well done, Walt. Certainly an image worthy of inclusion. I don't
recall seeing it before.

The trick to the PPG is to not get discouraged when (not if) images you
really like get rejected. Just shrug and move on (actually, if you
really, really think an image should have been selected, you can submit
it again - sometimes it will get through on the second try, which just
happened to one of mine...)

Cheers

  Thanks, Dan!

I liked the image pretty well, but was surprised at the reception it got
from the list, as well as people I showed the print to. I do tend to be
a pretty harsh critic of some of my shots -- especially after I set them
aside for a few days and look at them again. Strangely, though, when I
go through things that are months old, I find shots that make me wonder
why I didn't bother with them.

  Many thanks, Brian!

I'm pretty sure I won't get too discouraged by the inevitable
rejections. A big part of the reason that I post PESO's is simply to
make sure I'm being objective. Even when I really, really like a shot,
I tend not to trust my judgment. So, I post them here to see what
others might see that I don't. And, like the proverbial dawn hanging
has a way of focusing the mind, uploading an image and posting the link
to PDML has a way of making you keenly aware of every tiny flaw in an
image the moment it's too late to cancel the send.

And, at least 95% of the time when I get suggestions or criticism on a
shot, it's something I agree with -- in many cases noticed myself, but
wanted confirmation of it from objective eyeballs. Whatever makes me a
better photographer is worth any ego-bruising I might suffer in the process.

Thanks again!

Well done, Walt. Certainly an image worthy of inclusion. I don't

The trick to the PPG is to not get discouraged when (not if) images you
really like get rejected. Just shrug and move on (actually, if you

happened to one of mine...)

I was told years ago to go through your shots initially and then put them away

the same as you describe. More often than not, however, I find my initial

The Pentax Photo Gallery, OTOH is sponsored by Pentax; one applies to be one of

Re: Question about the Pentax Gallery

Pentax Gallery is Pentax Camera, but third party lenses are accepted.

PUG is either Pentax Camera with Pentax Lens, Pentax Camera with third
party lens or third party camera with Pentax Lens.

Monthly themes are a guideline, but the image size has to be no more
than so many pixels wide by so many pixels high with a file size no
bigger than something or other.

I'm sure I've seen the values for this written down somewhere, but
couldn't find them just now.

BW or color doesn't matter, although it seems to me it's easier to
convert color to BW than vice versa.

2010-10-03 Thread Walter Gilbert

Thanks for the kind offer, Bong!

If I haven't heard from someone at the gallery by Friday, I may very
well take you up on that.

As I said, I don't know if I'll ever produce anything worthy of
inclusion -- looking through the gallery can be pretty intimidating.
But, I intend to give it my best.

Thanks again!

I know that an endorsement from someone already in the gallery helps.
Let me know if you need a word drop to webmasters.

Info request -- Pentax gallery

2010-10-02 Thread Walter Gilbert

 Hi all,

From time to time, I see folks posting links to their images that have
been accepted to the Pentax gallery. So, I figured I'd register on the
off-chance I take a shot that would be accepted for inclusion. I tried
yesterday, requesting the Artist Code so that I could complete the
registration process, but haven't gotten a reply. It's been my
experience with other similar types of registrations that the process is
instant; submit the request, and an email with the requested code shows
up in your inbox a few seconds later. But, still, I haven't received
anything from the site.

Is this normal? Am I going about things incorrectly, or is there some
criteria that I have to meet in order to get an Artist Code?

Thanks in advance for any info anyone can provide.

Best,

Walt

I'm fairly certain that requests to participate in the Gallery are
handled by a real person - there's no automated response. If I remember
correctly, it takes a few days to get your 'Artist's Code'. Once you
have that, you go to 'Your Account' to set up a password and then, to
log in, you use your email address and password, as Boris said.

I can't even recall what my 'Artist's Code' is. I mustn't have recorded
it, but it seems that it's not needed once you have it.

Odd, I know :-)
