Re: [PEDA] ddb transfer failure ??

2001-08-14 Thread Clive . Broome

And if zipping also fails to send the database without causing it to be
corrupted, then
the last resort is to FTP the file in binary mode.

This is the way our company sends databases as the email servers between here
and the USA manage to mangle zip files and make them unloadable. The clue is the
database cannot load.

Zip not only compresses files, it also makes sure that the file is undamaged
when it uncompresses it. Some systems will alter binary files when passed
through mail systems. When the mail system sees a file type it recognizes
as binary (.pdf, .zip, .jpg, etc) it then knows to preserve 8-bit characters
and non-printable characters, not fold long lines, etc. So, there are other
reasons to use zip.

I think the problem is that it DIDN'T get MIME-encoded, as MIME doesn't have
a known file type for a DDB or PCB, etc. file. You could probably add a new
file type description for DDB, listing it as a binary file type, and the
recipient
would get it as an unknown-binary, MIME-encoded, and at least be able
to correctly reconstruct it at the other end.

I am pretty sure SP6 for NT doesn't update what you will get from this 2.5
MDAC install I am almost positive... but I don't have an NT system to
check anymore :(

I would download and install it anyway.

GASP! How do you get any work done with it? Maybe you already have

but yes! i finished exporting it from the pcb file, as per instructions

got any complaints back yet.

thanks for the information on exporting the pcb as a dwg. to be truthful,
its about time that i give that a shot. the job is something of a priority
and i really can't justify holding it up while i play with ddb
transportability,
especially when there's a better file to use in making the heatsink anyway.

i'll try that right now.

thanks colby,

but one thing you mentioned definitely threw up a flag. i have never

sent him, i'll go to the protel site and see if i can find the service pack.

and i'll go to the microsoft site and get the latest mdac, whatever that is.
is it a new windows DLL?

Re: [PEDA] ddb transfer failure ??

2001-08-14 Thread rlamoreaux

This is from Protel not exported from CamTastic.

Go into the PCB itself and then select File Export. Next select
filename.DWG and type Autocad then press SAVE. You now get a dialog box
asking what you want in the DWG.

I find that the DWG file takes a lot less space than a DXF. This will
include everything in the PCB so he will have all the info he needs.

I generally use the Windows File system for storing instead of the Access
Database method since then I can get to each file separately.

And as others have pointed out each file in the project can be exported and
sent to someone.

hi rob,

what exactly do you export to a dwg? that would be the gerbers, right?
he's needing measurements to the centers of all the pads so he can
work the heatsink plate around them. and they're using solid edge for
a cad package, although i assume it imports dwg's alright. is there any
particular gerber that i want to export for him? i've done just a tiny
amount
of work with camtastic, changing a silkscreen on a pcb to reflect our cage
number. beyond that, i'm not very good with gerbers. i know that i have
been told that i should review the gerbers before shipping them off, but
that
is of little value when i wouldn't even know what i was looking for.

my response this morning to the problem was twofold: i made sure
the ddb was not open, and i zipped it before i sent it to him. although
your posts have pushed me towards giving them one of the gerbers
exported as a dwg (i think), ulterior motives (mine) wanna see that darned
ddb opened on another machine.

i do not do system backups. i back up specific work directories to a
network drive. if these files won't open on another machine, then my
whole backup procedure is questionable. i figure i've got well over $100K
worth of protel work backed up. i'm a civilian employee for the navy, and
they are a pretty easy bunch to work for. but if my system hard-crashed
and i couldn't reload all those protel board files from backup, i think
they
might get a bit upset. ;-)

2001-08-14 Thread Brad Velander

Mike,
to export the PCB (the whole PCB file and layer structure), with the
PCB file open, go to "File", "Export".
Choose your filename and directory, click save, set the ACAD version (I
would suggest 13 for compatibility reasons), either DXF or DWG format (check
for your mech guys preference according to his tools), I suggest you leave
the pad/via holes unchecked (your mech guy can most likely measure to the
center of poads without the holes being present), export components as
blocks, and track ends is your preference (I us rounded just as Protel does
internally). This will generate an ACAD format DWG or DXF file with the
complete PCB layer structure and details. Then your mechanical guy could
load it into his tools and use his much more sophisticated measurement tools
to define his heatsink outline and details.

Re: [PEDA] ddb transfer failure ??

2001-08-14 Thread Colby - PowerStream

After reading(skimming) through the other replies there were a few things I
didn't see mentioned.

1. Make sure you are both upgraded to the latest Service Pack for Protel
SP6.
2. Make sure the Design did not somehow become read-only in the
transfer(this should only show an error if he was not upgraded to the latest
service pack... but previous SP's would cause an error if the file is
read-only)
3. Make sure you are both upgraded to the MDAC 2.5(2.6 is out... but I
*still* haven't gotten around to testing it out with Protel)
http://www.microsoft.com/data/download.htm

And of course... to repeat... definitely make sure all files are closed
before sending it.

Re: [PEDA] ddb transfer failure ??

2001-08-14 Thread rlamoreaux

It was determined a while back that closing a DDB with a print preview open
caused problems when the ddb was opened and the printer the preview was
using was no longer available. If you left the print preview open and he
has a diffferent printer this could be causing the problem.

Of course for mechanical people I just export an AutoCad 13 or 14 DWG.
They seem to like that better than the PCB itself.

Re: [PEDA] ddb transfer failure ??

2001-08-13 Thread Brad Velander

Mike,
as more of the story comes out here I have a new suggestion. Since
Ivan is a mechanical guy, why not just export the PCB to ACAD DWG or DXF
format, export it and email it to him. He can open it in ACAD and make much
faster and more precise measurements. This is what I do to transfer PCB
information to our mechanical designers, even for myself I prefer checking
critical dimensions in ACAD anyday.
But if you are sending DDBs by email zip them up, seems possibly the
mime formatting does something or other to them otherwise by my experiences.
When I sent a file to Ian first one failed similar to your failure, send one
that was zipped was just fine (much smaller too).

Re: [PEDA] ddb transfer failure ??

2001-08-13 Thread Clive . Broome

The problem could be the email system not transferring the *.ddb file correctly,
specially
if it goes through different servers in the system. The file type is probably
unknown.

Try zipping the ddb, if that doesnt work, zip and FTP it.

ddb's or not be able to read the footprints libraries) of course, there
is no actual powsup.pcb. so i emailed him a 20MB ddb.

we're still hosed... he tries to open it using the protel browse and
gets an "access violation at address xxx in client 99SE.exe".

what do i need to do so he can use the file?

thank you, miker

2001-08-13 Thread Robison Michael R CNIN

thanks brad,

i sent it over the intranet and i believe they've got that running at
100MB, so no, i didn't zip the file.

and i guess i should also have stated that this is exactly the same
version of protel that i am using... in fact its coming off the same
cd that i used. (don't be thinking naughty thoughts! one cd, two
licenses ;-).

thanks, miker

Re: [PEDA] ddb transfer failure ??

2001-08-13 Thread Robison Michael R CNIN

hi chris,

ivan is a mechanical engineer who is gonna do a heat sink for the
board. i built this pcb from crude old hardcopy drawings and an
stripped board. he was wanting to open it in protel so that he could
mouseover the layout and get dimensions.

there are no external files that i know of. the board was so basic
that i didn't even establish a footprint library... i just put pads where
i needed them.

are any of the files path sensitive? i.e. does ivan need to establish
the exact same directory path that i've got? surely not. that would
be a nightmare.

thanks, miker

Well, why CAN'T you mail him the PCB? You CAN export it from the DDB, and
you'll get a PCB file. He will get asked to specify a DDB on his system.

I'm guessing libraries, but not sure.

make sure all files in the DDB are closed. Remove any unneeded files.
Maybe make a copy of the entire DDB and open it yourself to make sure
it is consistant, etc.

2001-08-13 Thread Brad Velander

Mike,
I have seen this, or something similar, once before when I
transferred a file to Ian. Did you zip the file before transferring? This
was the root of my problem, zipped it up and then emailed it and everything
was fine. Sorry I didn't pipe up sooner, I was reading the thread but didn't
realize you were using email so I didn't think it could be what I had seen
before.

Re: [PEDA] ddb transfer failure ??

2001-08-13 Thread Chris Knudsen

If he just needs to view it, send him the pcb only (right-click, export).

Or send him a set of gerbers.

Of course this would be a work-around. You SHOULD be able to just copy the ddb over
to him. The error you see seems a little unnerving.

Are there any links to external files on your computer (like a company logo or a
graphic perhaps), in the ddb?
