And if zipping also fails to send the database without causing it to be corrupted, then the last resort is to FTP the file in binary mode. This is the way our company sends databases as the email servers between here and the USA manage to mangle zip files and make them unloadable. Mike, to export the PCB (the whole PCB file and layer structure), with the PCB file open, go to "File", "Export". Choose your filename and directory, click save, set the ACAD version (I would suggest 13 for compatibility reasons), either DXF or DWG format (check for your mech guys preference according to his tools), I suggest you leave the pad/via holes unchecked (your mech guy can most likely measure to the center of poads without the holes being present), export components as blocks, and track ends is your preference (I us rounded just as Protel does internally). This will generate an ACAD format DWG or DXF file with the complete PCB layer structure and details. Then your mechanical guy could load it into his tools and use his much more sophisticated measurement tools to define his heatsink outline and details. After reading(skimming) through the other replies there were a few things I didn't see mentioned. 1. Make sure you are both upgraded to the latest Service Pack for Protel SP6. 2. Make sure the Design did not somehow become read-only in the transfer(this should only show an error if he was not upgraded to the latest service pack... but previous SP's would cause an error if the file is read-only) 3. It was determined a while back that closing a DDB with a print preview open caused problems when the ddb was opened and the printer the preview was using was no longer available. Mike, as more of the story comes out here I have a new suggestion. Since Ivan is a mechanical guy, why not just export the PCB to ACAD DWG or DXF format, export it and email it to him. He can open it in ACAD and make much faster and more precise measurements. This is what I do to transfer PCB information to our mechanical designers, even for myself I prefer checking critical dimensions in ACAD anyday. But if you are sending DDBs by email zip them up, seems possibly the mime formatting does something or other to them otherwise by my experiences. When I sent a file to Ian first one failed similar to your failure, send one that was zipped was just fine (much smaller too). The problem could be the email system not transferring the *.ddb file correctly, specially if it goes through different servers in the system. The file type is probably unknown. Well, why CAN'T you mail him the PCB? You CAN export it from the DDB, and you'll get a PCB file. Remove any unneeded files. Mike, I have seen this, or something similar, once before when I transferred a file to Ian. Did you zip the file before transferring? This was the root of my problem, zipped it up and then emailed it and everything was fine. Sorry I didn't pipe up sooner, I was reading the thread but didn't realize you were using email so I didn't think it could be what I had seen before. If he just needs to view it, send him the pcb only (right-click, export). Or send him a set of gerbers. Of course this would be a work-around. You SHOULD be able to just copy the ddb over to him.
