[RBW] Advice: crank arms less than 165mm
My wife who is 5'3 with a PBH of 74 develops knee pain during rides longer than 10 miles. As she has been easing into cycling over the last year, she rides exclusively in her small chainring (24) on her Sugino XD2 triple 46-36-24 with 165mm crankarms. The pain is in front in her kneecaps. I am going to be raising her seat slightly and pushing her saddle slightly back to see if that helps. I am also considering shorter crank arms given her relatively short legs compared to torso. Does anyone have experiences with shorter crank arms, especially folks in my wife's height range? Also thoughts on good crank sets with shorter crank arms? I was thinking of trying 155mm crank arms if adjusting seat height didn't alleviate the issue. Can I put non-Sugino crank arms on a Xd2? [RBW] Re: Advice: crank arms less than 165mm
Thanks everyone for the quick and thoughtful responses. I will definitely be adjusting height of saddle and sliding it back a bit as a first course of action. If that doesn't help, I wanted a plan B which might be the shorter cranks. Stretching more is also good advice that I will pass along. I also will try to get her to experiment with riding a bit more in the middle 36 chainring. She handle the pain well on our 5 day GAP ride of 30 mile days, but I hope I can find a way to eliminate much of her pain. She really enjoys riding. From experience, I know that minor adjustments can bring great comfort or discomfort, so I will start there. It is a challenge to troubleshoot someone else's discomfort. [RBW] Summer adventures
With opening teacher meetings looming, I thought I would share a quick recap and photos of several summer biking adventures. I posted earlier about our family ride in June on the GAP trail; photos are here: https://flickr.com/photos/86975051@N08/sets/72157644880466610 In July two friends and I cycled the entire CO Canal. Photos from that trip are here: https://flickr.com/photos/86975051@N08/sets/72157646398102925 For many years I have wanted to cycle from Pittsburg to Washington, DC on the GAP and CO. Though I had to break the journey up into two adventures, the journey was as enjoyable as I had hoped. Finally in early August we vacationed in Cape Cod with friends. I brought my Atlantis, and we explored as a family the Cape's great network of rail trails. Photos are here: https://flickr.com/photos/86975051@N08/sets/72157646398220275 While in Harwich on Cape Cod, I saw this Ross Eurosport resting in the bike area at the public beach. Several years ago Grant posted on the Blug several photos of well used bikes he saw in NYC, if I remember correctly. The Ross reminded me of that series of photos. The bike looks more or less equipped with original components and appears to have spent its entire life by the ocean. It continues to transport someone to the beach: http://flic.kr/p/oqc7Ju For next summer, my wife and I are thinking of cycling the Erie Canal. If anyone has ridden portions, I would appreciate any insights and advice. [RBW] Re: German Mirror ???
I like mine: https://flic.kr/p/jwysaa I use it on my commuting bike. The coverage is good enough and the mirror is rugged. I park the bike behind the door in my classroom and on the porch of my house where the mirror receives constant bumping. The bike has also fallen over more times than I care to admit, and the mirror survives. I have not experienced the issues Michael has, but I haven't readjusted the clamp to bar fitting much. Based on its design, I can see where it might not take too much adjusting. I have the tension on the mirror to arm connection such that I can adjust the angle of the mirror with a firm hand; this allows me to adjust it as I ride should it have gotten smacked too hard by an opening door. I have it mounted on Albatross bars. Overall a stout mirror that allows me to track overtaking cars. [RBW] New to Me Rivendell Road (Standard)
The FedEx driver delivered my new-to-me Rivendell Road frame and fork on Saturday. There is nothing quite like the anticipation of a new bike. I had wanted something a bit different from my Atlantis and Surly LHT and decided this was it. This will be my winter project, and I hope to have it on the road come spring. Photos here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/86975051@N08/sets/72157646658697853/ So I have a question for the collective wisdom of this group. I have read Cyclofiend's page on the Rivendell Road Standard. How do I tell whether mine is a Road, Road Standard, or some other custom? I am at least the third owner. If I understand Waterford serial numbers, mine the 42nd frame made in July of 1996 (G96042). It doesn't matter to my riding enjoyment what model it is, but I am curious and take pride, like all of you, in my Rivendells. So, how to learn more about the frame? Also, does anyone have photos of their Rivendell Road (Standard) bike to share? Looking for ideas and inspiration. Thanks, Erl -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: New to Me Rivendell Road (Standard)
Thanks to all for the comments. I am looking forward to building-up and riding this bike. Tony, the build is still evolving. The challenge and fun for me will be building-up a road bike designed for skinny tires; a slightly different endeavor than what I did with my Atlantis. At the moment, it will have noodle drop bars with a Brooks b17 saddle. I am still debating between a compact double vs a triple crankset, with a 9speed cassette and bar end shifters. The previous owner said the max tire size is 700 x 28 and with fenders 700 x 25. My goal will be 700 x 26 Grand Bois tires under a set of fenders. Beyond this I have not settled on part specifics. I am continuing to find and view photos of other Riv Road Standards. I am always open to suggestions and don't do what I did comments. :) Thanks, Erl -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: New to Me Rivendell Road (Standard)
Tim, Thanks for the great idea of converting to 650. I had pondered it, but I had figured the bb would be too low. Glad to know it works, and I think I will go with 650 wheels as well. A few questions if you don't mind: Do you use a 170 crank length? Which brakes do you use with the 650 wheelset? Do the 650 x 38b max out clearance under fenders? Your bike is beautiful! Thanks again, Erl On Monday, October 27, 2014 10:48:59 PM UTC-4, Tim Gavin wrote: I love that colorway; some of the loveliest Rivs have a dark head tube. My Road Standard is a '97 Waterford build, and the lugs look identical to yours. Mine has the exact same clearances: 700 x 28c with about 1 mm to spare under the brake bridge. I converted my Road Standard to 650 x 38b and am much happier with the ride and handling on GB Lierres. I have to be careful about the resultant extra-low BB, but the bike feels more Rivish to me on the wider tires. But then I'm 220#, so I appreciate bigger tires on just about any bike. :) ATMO, the Road Standard 753 tubeset feels pretty stiff for a skinny tire bike. Like a stout enough to tour on (which I do), but it can't fit a 700c touring tire. I prefer a more compliant frame if I'm limited to high pressure tires. The GB Cerf is a great tire for a skinny-only bike; I use them on my gofast (Italian steel Giordana). The Giordana frame is pretty flexy; its tubing is some French heat-treated Excelle NiChrom in a crazy-thin profile. Under my bulk, that flex gives it a great ride. It planes on skinny tires, where the Riv gets closest to that feel with the added plush of the Lierres. That said, the Riv frame will still be strong long after I've broken that Giordana frame, probably. The first generation Road Standard and All-Rounder have those gorgeous Nervex-like lugs, and are probably the least-expensive frames you'll find with Rivendell on the down tube. You made a great find on a beautiful bike! On Mon, Oct 27, 2014 at 9:02 PM, Tony DeFilippo vpi...@gmail.com javascript: wrote: That sounds cool Erl! Funny to think of a Riv with clearances that small, as the narrow tires go in sure those GB tires are excellent. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: New to Me Rivendell Road (Standard)
Tim and Jim, Thank you both for that great information on brakes, tires, fenders and wheels! That is exactly the feedback I was hoping for. I haven't started buying parts or building it up; it is a blank canvas at this point. Do either of you have a photo of your bike from the side showing how the 650b wheels look on the bike? Time for me to do a bit more reading on 650b wheelsets and tires. Thanks again, Erl On Tuesday, October 28, 2014 9:41:03 AM UTC-4, Tim Gavin wrote: Erl- I used Tektro R559 brakes, but recently received a set of Paul Racers in a trade and now use them. They're both good brakes. The Pauls feel stronger; maybe they're less flexy. My Riv had a 170 Campy Racing Triple crank, and that's what I still use. I tried and liked a 170 Stronglight 105, which was gorgeous but really tricky to shift well. The Stronglight only worked with friction and a vintage double derailleur; any triple I tried had a sculpted outer cage that would hit the very low-Q crank. I switched to Ergo shifters, so I put the Campy triple back on and got it some new rings. 650 x 38 b is the max you can fit between the forks and chainstays, horizontally. It has decent fender room above the 38 tire. SKS P45's mount easily, and fit well with pretty good clearance. I picked up a stick and it folded up my rear P45, so now I'm running the Velo Orange hammered 650 x 45 mm fenders. They are harder to mount and don't have as much clearance, but they sure are purty. If you get the SKS fenders, put a safety release clip on the back too! I'm installing PDW FMF safety tabs on my VO fenders this weekend for the safety release. However, the BB gets real low after conversion. The switch from 622 x 28 to 584 x 38 results in another 9 mm of frame drop. That's why the wise elves in Walnut Creek don't recommend the Road Standard as a good candidate for 650b conversion. But, as some of us have demonstrated, it works fine but you must be careful not to pedal when leaned over. I've done singletrack on my 650b Road, but on a trail with very few log-overs or other straddle obstacles. If you already are building it up 700c, then I'd recommend trying the Cerfs. They ride really great for such a skinny tire. Then keep an eye out for some used 650b wheels and R559 brakes on the list. Without fenders, one could change between 650b and 700c with a wheel and brake caliper swap (assuming compatible gearing on both wheels). Brake cable quick releases would make it a quick process. Re: [RBW] New to Me Rivendell Road (Standard)
That is a gorgeous bike! I do like the look with the 650b and fenders. Thanks so much for sharing the photo. I had read somewhere else about the tread pattern in the Lierre trapping bits of road flotsam and jetsam; I am sorry to learn they pick up glass on your commute. I have ridden Compass 26 x 1.75 tires on my Atlantis for about 6 months, like how they handle, and have yet to have a flat. Thanks again for the helpful info and photos. Erl On Wednesday, October 29, 2014 9:09:34 AM UTC-4, Tim Gavin wrote: Here's a newer shot, as promised. Wrong side, sorry. We had just climbed up a steep, long grade across from St. Paul, so catching my breath came before aesthetics. The sidewalls of the Lierres are more dingy a year later. I commute a 1-2 days a week on this bike (1-2 days on other bikes), so the tires are getting some miles on them. They're a great tire but not great for commuting; I get about 1 flat a month from glass shards. The glass shards seem to get caught in the zig-zag tread of the Lierre; I think they wouldn't get caught as easily in the finer, file tread of the Loup Loup Pass. The VO 650 x 45 mm fenders fit a little more closely than SKS P45's, and they have less clearance due to nuts inside the fender. But they look nice, aren't noisy, and seem to hold their position well (maybe because they're metal vs. chromo-plastic). You'd have more clearance with VO Zeppelin 650 x 52 mm fenders, and they should fit--but maybe with a little crimping at the fork crown. Or just go P45's, they're pretty easy. Enjoy the Road Standard, and share more pics when you have it built. I absolutely love the lugs, head badge, and the ride. And the fact that it says Rivendell on the down tube makes it easier to explain to people. On Tue, Oct 28, 2014 at 7:12 PM, WETH erlho...@gmail.com javascript: wrote: Tim, thanks for the photo. [RBW] Re: Water (bottle) Retention
Patrick, I have used the 27oz Kleen Kanteen bottles for several years and like them. I have Iris cages on my Atlantis and the Kleen Kanteen plastic cages on my Surly LHT: http://www.kleankanteen.com/products/accessories/klean-kanteen-bike-cage.php I have never had a bottle fall out using either cage; both hold the bottles tightly. I personally do not like the tactile sensation or sound of sliding the bottle in and out of the Iris cages, but that is my own issue. The plastic cages have been very reliable on both my bike and my wife's. None have broken; however we do not ride much below 20F. They did not work well with the Bontrager cages which came on our tandem. The biggest problem I have encountered on rough roads has been rattle between the bottle and cage. The Nitto racks are light enough to squeeze and tighten their grip. If it really bothers you, KK sells a plastic carrier that is made specifically for their bottles. I tried it and found it quite functional. KK sells a variety of tops, although few stores seem to carry them. On line you can get ones w/out the loop, but in the end I have not found it to be a big deal; I just position the loop in the cage so that it is away from my mouth when I lift it out. [RBW] Compass 26 × 1.75 Feedback requested
Dear Hugh, I bought a pair in March of 2014 for my Atlantis. They replaced a set of Big Apples 26x 2.1(?). The Compass seem faster but I have no data to confirm that. The compass ride as nicely as the Big Apples. I have about a 1000 miles on them and have not gotten one flat. (I really hate writing that...fate and all) I ride suburban/urban streets, paved bike paths, and some gravel trails. They handled those surfaces fine, perhaps a bit more sure footed on the dirt than the Big Apples. I rode them today and was pleased not to see any sidewall cracking yet. They do measure I believe closer to 1.60 than 1.75; someone else will verify/revise that I am sure. All in all nice tires that are well suited for how and where I ride. I will buy another pair when these wear out. I did buy the tubes that Compass recommends along with the tires. Purchasing through Compass was fast and painless. [RBW] Re: Getting comfortable on the Noodle
Dave, There is much good advice here already. My main bikes are a 58cm LHT with Albatross and a 56 Atlantis with noodles. The Surly set up came first, and I had discovered a sweet spot up in the bends of the Albatross for comfort on longer and faster rides. When I set up the noodles on the Atlantis, I took measurements first of the Surly with Albatross bars (bar height relative to saddle, distance to saddle, etc). I then set up the Atlantis so that the position of my hands on the brake hoods was the same distance to the bends on the Albatross bars. To get the reach right, I used a dirt drop stem with the noodles. All the best, Erl On Thursday, March 12, 2015 at 12:53:52 PM UTC-4, Tim wrote: If the hoods feel like a reach, maybe you need a shorter stem. I usually can tell right away if a bar setup will work for me. I ride noodles on my 63 Hilsen, with a 10cm Technomic, a little above seat height, and it's perfect. I've ridden it thousands of miles. I got a 63cm Roadeo, set it up with a 10cm Tallux and Mark's bars and felt like you do, a little over reached for the hoods. I switched to a dirt drop stem which was much better but I had it slammed down so could not lower the bars. Finally found a 6cm Technomic and it is the ticket. The bike fits great now. I would give your current cockpit a couple more rides then maybe consider a stem switch. [RBW] Spring Break Microtour
During the cold and snowy days of January, my wife and I thought a multi-day bike tour with our middle school aged sons would be a fun way to spend spring vacation. Unfortunately weather during the last full week of March in the Washington, DC area can be quite unpredictable. A cold and damp forecast nixed the idea of spending a few days riding at the Delaware and Maryland seashore. Since we live in the midst of a wonderful network of trails, we settled on a micro tour (a s36o - credit card style to a motel- if you will). The only questions were: How far could we and the boys ride after a winter of little riding? Would the weather give us a 48 hour window of reasonably dry and not too cold temperatures? (Other commitments crept in and limited us to two days of adventure.) We departed Tuesday morning around 11am after waiting for the temperature to rise into the mid 30s. We recruited a third teenager, a family friend who had ridden the GAP trail with us last summer. Our first stop was Bethesda, MD. Despite only having biked 6 miles from our house and temperatures in the upper 30s, the boys wanted ice cream. I opted for a hot cup of coffee. Departing Bethesda we rode 8 miles on the Capital Crescent Trail which gradually descends into Washington, DC; we found a good pizza place on the waterfront in Georgetown. Despite temperatures still only in the upper 30s, the boys enjoyed a second ice cream before we crossed the Key Bridge into Virginia. I always experience a bit of awe crossing the Key Bridge. From its span you can take in the beauty of Georgetown, the Potomac River, the Kennedy Center and the Washington Monument. I knew we had a climb, but I was not prepared for the steepness and length of the first climb on the Custis Trail (http://bikewashington.org/trails/wad/custis.htm) as it passes the Key Bridge Marriott. After four hilly miles the Custis trail connects to the WOD Trail (http://bikewashington.org/trails/wad/wad.htm) The boys experienced several drivetrain mishaps on this stretch. My adolescent sons do not shift with much finese or forethought. So I tended to several dropped chains and one chain wedged between the smallest cassette cog and the frame (not sure how that happened as I could not make it happen again after freeing the chain). I wasn't complaining as these stops provided me with needed rests from the hills. Once on the WOD we had a lovely ride through the Virginia suburbs. Without leaves on the trees, the view into the neighborhoods is expansive and interesting. After Vienna, VA the trail takes on a slightly rural feel as it heads toward Reston. Between Vienna and Reston, an approaching cyclist called out my name. I enjoyed catching up briefly with Howard who was commuting home on his gorgeous Rambouilliet. The goal had been to ride to Leesburg, but the late start, dropped chains, ice cream eating and leisurely pace left us running out of daylight. After 37 total miles of riding we found a motel in Herndon, VA and ate a fine meal at an Outback Steakhouse next door. Wednesday morning was damp and cold; we delayed our departure until 10am. Just a few sprinkles remained, and we enjoyed a brisk ride back to Vienna for breakfast. The weather warmed slowly, and we had a great time retracing yesterday's route home. The Custis trail was much easier coming the other direction, toward the Key Bridge, and we had no drivetrain problems. Over the final miles, my wife and I agreed that we were glad we went ahead with the trip. The colder temperatures had given us doubts. Most importantly the boys had a great time! I so enjoy enjoy seeing my sons cycling ahead of me as we pedal along. One of the boys rode my 1977 Motobecane Super Mirage on which I installed Soma Sparrow bars. I was unnecessarily concerned about the original 27 inch wheelset surviving a teenage boy. The only casualty was the Motobecane's front derailleur; it was bent and twisted after eating a pant leg. Fortunately I quickly converted the bike to a 1x5. I have read Cyclofiend's page on the Rivendell Road Standard. How do I tell whether mine is a Road, Road Standard, or some other custom? I am at least the third owner. It doesn't matter to my riding enjoyment what model it is, but I am curious and take pride, like all of you, in my Rivendells. So, how to learn more about the frame? Also, does anyone have photos of their Rivendell Road (Standard) bike to share? Looking for ideas and inspiration. [RBW] Re: Bethany Beach, DE - Ocean to Bay Tour
I left Friday after work around 6:30p and drove the three hours to Bethany Beach. Traffic crossing the Bay Bridge was light, a rare occurrence and good omen of a great day on Saturday. Heavy rain fell overnight from about 1-2am, an event not well forecasted or I wouldn't have left the Atlantis locked to the car rack uncovered overnight. In hindsight, a foolish decision. Saturday morning broke cool and foggy; a perfect morning at the beach. We rode the half mile from my friend's house to the start of the ride and were on our way at 7:30am biking north on Route 1. The fog limited visibility to a tenth to quarter mile. I was glad for the wide shoulder on that section of road. As we approached the turn off from Route 1 to go under the Indian River Inlet Bridge, a beautiful cable stayed span, we could not see the bridge for the fog. However, It majestically appeared from the fog as we cycled under it, turned back on to Route 1 and cycled south. By 8:00am the fog was lifting as we headed inland. The sky turned blue, the temperature rose slowly to the mid 70s, and the humidity stayed away. It was in short the perfect cycling day for me. The first rest stop was at Holt's Landing State Park at mile 18. After leaving there we were on to Selbyville, DE. The crowds thinned and riders spread out. We kept up a great pace and marveled at our almost effortless speed. After leaving leaving the rest stop in Selbyville, we cycled into Maryland and a head wind. We discovered that our previously mentioned speed had been aided by an undetected tail wind. Over the next 30 plus miles we alternated a tail and head wind; we enjoyed and lamented each in turn. We completed the 62 mile ride in a little under 7 hours; we weren't racing, but we weren't rambling either. The weather was perfect! The event was well organized with a well marked route. The scenery was great, and the roads mostly flat! I am ready to ride the route again and hope to be back next year. My Atlantis received countless compliments to the point my riding partner gave me a ribbing about it. I spoke with one other Atlantis rider, who reported seeing a third Atlantis. I spotted no other Rivendells; sorry if we missed each other. Half way through, my bike developed a chronic ticking from the drivetrain; likely a result of the overnight soaking. And my saturated Brooks saddle was broken in anew! The Compass tires road well; I will order another pair when these wear out. Photos prove I road in the fog and sun on Saturday and didn't take many pictures: https://flickr.com/photos/86975051@N08/sets/72157649741097563 Safe cycling, Erl -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell Road Standard, whole bike or f/f - Near-New
Dave, That is a beautiful bike to my eyes, too, with thoughtfully selected parts. I enjoyed viewing the photos. Best wishes in your effort to find it a new home. Erl On Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 8:20:45 AM UTC-4, Dave Hallerman wrote: Hi, I'm the original owner of this 56.5cm (c-c) Rivendell Road Standard. My problem here, so to speak, is that I tend to baby beautiful objects (please look at the photos). And to my eyes, this is one lovely bicycle -- which is why I've put only 254 miles on it since Joe Bell repainted it a few years ago and I rebuilt it with a selection of my best parts. Pristine condition, better than almost any other used bike you might buy. I prefer to sell the whole bicycle, but would consider selling just the frame and fork. There are several pros and cons of my selling -- that is, your buying -- the whole bike vs. just the frame and fork. Here are the key pros/cons: *Pro Whole Bike:* It's a shame to disassemble a well-put together bicycle. I'm an excellent bicycle mechanic, but painstaking, so it takes me quite some time to get it just right. *Con Whole Bike:* At their super-light level of usage, these parts are worth far more than the $1200 difference in price. *Pro Frame Fork:* Much easier to ship, and I get to keep all those great parts (I know their real value). *Con Frame Fork:* I give up things like cold-forged Shimano Deore XT cranks; Shimano XTR 952 rear derailleur, super-excellent; Campy Chorus alloy shifters, rare and lovely; and a logo-free silver Chris King headset, also rare and lovely. *Price, whole bike (no pedals) = $2600*, plus shipping in CONUS and packing costs [will be packed by an excellent bike shop] *Price, frame and fork = $1400*, plus shipping in CONUS Check or postal money order is fine. PayPal is good if you cover the fee. Any questions, please ask. And more photos available, too. Dave, who notes that this idiosyncratic gearing goes from a high of 113 gear inches to a low of 20 gear inches with all the stops in-between which gives a cyclist a very useful range for nearly all uphills and downhills and all the landscape in-between plus these cranks are easily reconfigured as compact doubles since the granny spacers come off +++ Hudson Valley, NY *Below:* * Detailed specifications, frame and parts * Backstory on why I'm selling * Photographs *FRAME SPECS:* Seat tube (c-c) = 56.5cm Seat tube (c-t) = 58.0cm Top tube (c-c) = 57.5cm Head tube angle = 73.5 degrees Seat tube angle = 72.5 degrees Wheelbase = 100.5cm Standover height = 81.2cm Head tube = 15.5cm Chainstay length = 42.5cm Braze-ons = pump peg, chain peg, down tube shifter bosses, rear fender eyelets chainstay bridge boss, fron fender eyelets, rear rack dropout eyelets and seat stay bosses Materials = Reynolds 753 tubing, silver-brazed, Richard Sachs-designed lugs *PARTS SPECS:* Note that almost all these parts are near-new, with only 254 miles, totally dry miles, on them. Wheels = Shimano Ultegra (6600) hubs, Mavic Open Pro rims, Wheelsmith double-butted spokes Tires = Grand Bois Cerf, 700x26 (only 50 miles on tires) Shifters = Campagnolo Chorus Ergo, alloy, 9-speed Cranks = Shimano Deore XT (730), 110/74 BCD, 170mm Chainrings = Race Face 46/34/24 (silver) Rear derailleur = Shimano XTR (952) Front derailleur = Shimano XTR (900), 1-1/8 inch clamp Cassette = Shimano Deore XT (770), 11x32 nine-speed Brakes = Shimano Dura-Ace (7700), w/upgraded Kool-Stop dual-compound pads Headset = Chris King 2-Nut, silver, no logo Stem = Nitto Dynamic, 11cm Handlebar = Ritchey Ergonomic, silver, 42cm Handlebar tape = Brooks leather Seatpost = Suntour Superbe, 27.2 (not as new as other parts) Saddle = Selle Italia X2, black Note #1 = I use the Jtek Engineering ShiftMate to get perfect index shifting with the combination of a Campy shifter and a Shimano drivetrain. This offers several benefits, which I would be glad to discuss separately. Note #2 = pedals NOT included *BACKSTORY:* I bought this Rivendell Road Standard during Riv's first year, 1995, so this frame was manufactured by Waterford, using silver-brazing, Richard Sachs designed lugs, and Reynolds 753 tubing. The two main things different about this frame, compared to others of that era, are semi-vertical dropouts (not horizontal) and a 20mm head tube extension, which makes it easier to get the handlebars where you want them. One thing about this frame that was true of all Riv Road Standards is its lower-than-normal bottom bracket, which contributes to at least two key factors: (1) lower center of gravity, which gives it greater stability; (2) lower standover height than the nomimal frame size would indicate, which is why it fits me super-well, even though my standard size frame is a 56cm square. So, after not riding this Riv Road all that much, only about 1,000 miles over 15 years, I thought I'd get Joe Bell to repaint
