Re: Poor Dialog Positioning

2019-04-03 Thread Steven P Vallière
One additional clarification...

My monitor setup is basically like this | _ _ _ with the
bottoms of all screens aligned because they are physically
aligned on my desk.

TheBat appears to be positioning the dialogs in the center
of the overall desktop rectangle which, in my case, includes
empty areas above the three 1024x768 screens.

In addition to multi-monitor desktops, I can see laptop users
with docking station setups that will have a similar problem
unless all displays are the same height.

Poor Dialog Positioning

2019-04-03 Thread Steven P Vallière

I have a multiple monitor setup with the leftmost screen
at 1080x1920 and the next three screens at 1024x768. The
center of three 1024 screens is the primary display.

I was working with a table in an HTML formatted message
and all of the table property dialogs *ALWAYS* appear
partially off screen across the the border between the
2nd and 3rd screens. This means that I cannot see all
of the controls in the dialog and if I did not remember
all of Windows' shortcut keys for moving a window, it
would be impossible to move those controls into view.

It is well past the time that all programs should be
aware of multiple monitor desktops. TheBat! needs to
center the initial appearance of popup dialogs on the
currrently active screen (look into the MonitorFromWindow
function and related functions.)

It might be nice if these dialogs "remembered" their
previous positions and subsequent openings of the same
dialog would place it in the same location where it
was closed previously. But that may be asking too much.

As it is, most of these dialogs will not be usable by
typical users who are unaware of all of the keyboard
shortcuts.

Looking through my spam filter's detailed logs, I'm seeing

I'm not sure why my anti-spam (regula) is suddenly thinking

If anyone else is having issues with mail unexpectedly landing

Interesting. You have a VERY rare printer... smile
But you also have a point.

TF No, I don't think the software should be second-guessing what colour I
TF would like better than the one coded into the HTML email, I think it
TF should print the colour exactly as in the email. (But then, I also
TF believe that emails should not be in white colour.)

I was just hoping for something approaching HTML printing
consistency, so that we could rely on things to print the
same whether printed from a browser or an email program.
All of the browsers I tried (Firefox, Chrome, IE and Opera)
printed the white text as black and did not print the
background colors (using the default settings.)

A few years ago I found the setting to tell one of the
browsers (probably Firefox, but I'm not positive) to print
background colors and then it DID attempt to print the
text in white -- but since my color printer has no white
ink, that didn't work any better than printing white on white.
For most of us, the print job needs to be rendered as a full
page bitmap and then printed so that the white places are
simply not printed at all. Some printers can probably handle
that themselves, but I doubt it is a generally available
feature.

TF If a smart printing module is introduced, please make it optional,
TF so I can turn it off.

I agree with that completely. I never like being forced to
do something the programmer's favorite way when alternate
options are available. Since the current code obviously
already exists, what I'm hoping for could be a new option
(possibly even an optional add-on/plug-in?)

I've been noticing that message from one particular sender
are often sent to the junk folder instead of going where
the filter that matches both the subject and the sender
(though the filter is set to the OR of either one.) This
doesn't ALWAYS happen, but it has been happening often
enough that I need to ask a question:

What happens first: Filtering or Junk Checking?

I have the Regula anti-spam plug-in and, overall, have
been very happy with it, so this is more of a curiosity
than a problem. I think I can correct it by adding the
automated account that sends me the daily report that is
having trouble to my address book (and thereby whitelisting
it for the anti-spam plug-in.)

I'm still curious about the order of evaluation, though.

It certainly /looks/ like the anti-spam is run BEFORE any
of my filters. I wonder if it would be possible (and useful)
to be able to have the anti-spam and anti-virus plug-ins
listed in the filters so that we could move some of our own
special exceptions before or after them?

Strange Viewer Scrollbar Issue

2012-08-17 Thread Steven P Vallière

This has existed for several recent versions, at least since
I jumped from 5.1.6.8 to .13 today and I don't know how far
back it goes...

When I start up TheBat! with it focused on a text-only email
and then switch to an automated messages sent by pflogsumm
(on my mail server) the scroll bar disappears, even though
the message is hundreds of lines long. The scroll bar WAS
visible for the previously viewed text-only message (oh, the
pflogsumm report is also text-only) and will be reactivated
when I switch to a different text-only message. But on any
of the pflogsumm report emails I have, it disappears.

UNTIL, I've viewed a text/html message. From that point on,
the scroll bar works normally for the pflogsumm messages, too.

The only header differences I see are that the pflogsumm
messages have these header fields (in this order):

  Return-Path:
  X-Original-To:
  Delivered-To:
  Received:
  Subject:
  From:
  To:
  Received:
  Message-Id:
  Date:

Text emails that work have these headers (again, in order):

  Return-Path:
  X-Original-To:
  Delivered-To:
  Received:
  To:
  Subject:
  Date:
  Message-Id:
  From:

I haven't experimented much beyond this, but if I can provide
any additional information, I'm willing to give it a shot.
That is, if anyone care, of course -- I realize this is a very
minor issue. But it is definitely strange.

Target Machine Actively Refused?

2012-07-30 Thread Steven P Vallière

Last Saturday evening, TheBat! started logging these messages:

they continued until these messages started:

!7/29/2012, 02:31:51: FETCH - Could not connect to the server. No connection
could be made because the target machine actively refused it

and those continued until I restarted TheBat! this morning.
Since I happen to be the admin for the mail server, I can
say with reasonable certainty that the second message was
untrue. I tried a number of things to see if my server was
broken or if TheBat! was confused and concluded that somehow,
TheBat! had gotten confused.

1. I monitored the server's logs and watched many other
users checking and fetching mail, yet when TheBat!
logged this message, no attempt to access the mail server
from my account was logged.

2. I ran tcpdump on the mail server to monitor incoming
connect attempts for POP3 (the protocol configured for
the failing account.) None were being made from my
machine or the internet gateway my machine traverses to
get to the mail server /when I pressed 'Receive New Mail'
and the message was logged/ -- but other machines inside
our office WERE accessing the POP3 server through the
gateway.

3. I rebooted the mail server and gateway, just to be sure.
The issue did not go away.

4. I stopped and restarted TheBat! and since then, it has
worked just fine.

This is the first time I've ever seen anything like this.
I wish I knew how to trigger it, but all I can do is report
what I saw, what I tried and the results. I hope it is useful.

TheBat! as long as I have been using it. RIT's standard
response has always been to say that they are right and
everyone that doesn't display their messages correctly is
wrong. While that may be technically correct, it would
seem very sensible to ensure that TheBat!'s messages would
display correctly in any email client that is more popular
than TheBat! I checked a few sites that track such things
and have deduced that TheBat! (while a very good product)
has significantly less than 0.5% of the total market for
email clients.

http://visibleranking.com/most-popular-email-clients.php

http://www.labnol.org/internet/email/most-popular-email-clients/9340/

http://www.smartinsights.com/email-marketing/email-marketing-analytics/most-popular-email-marketing-clients/attachment/email-client-popularity/

I believe that, if TheBat! were in the top few, then it is
possible to force others to conform if you adopt the We're
right, everyone else is wrong attitude, but TheBat! isn't
at that point, so they should probably conform to the more
commonly accepted standards rather than sticking to the
letter of one particular standard (or is it actually only
an RFC?) that they got working.

GP Embedded images appear correctly in email I send to correspondents.

Well, I must be doing it wrong, then, because I've NEVER

and have the message remain intact. When I've reported
this in the past, RIT's response has always been, essentially,
they are wrong and we won't change and my feeling is that
RIT might be able to get away with that attitude when TheBat!
has more users than Thunderbird, but I'm not sure that will
be true, for a while at least.

Anyway, here's the way I attempt to embed images in HTML mail.
Perhaps someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong?

 * My default mail format shows Plain Text (MicroEd)
in TheBat!'s status bar.

 * I create a new message by using the drop-list on the
Create a new message button.

 * I click the status bar to change the message format
to HTML only

 * I enter some text, set fonts, styles, colors, etc.

 * I click the insert image button on the message
edit toolbar and TheBat! puts my image right where
I wanted.

 * I enter a bit more text to follow the image.

 * I leave the default signature block that TB inserted
when I created the message.

 * I press the Send message button.

The result looks as I want in gmail, hotmail and yahoo mail.
It looks wrong in Thunderbird, RoadRunner's web mail app
(they're my ISP) and in SquirrelMail (which some of my
recipients use.) Since I'm not sure about attaching images
to messages in the group, I've put screen caps of what I
see when a simple message with one embedded image was viewed
in Thunderbird (tb), RoadRunner (rr) and SquirrelMail (sm)
on my web server:

  http://www.svalli.com/files/batbug-ei-rr.png

  http://www.svalli.com/files/batbug-ei-rr.png

  http://www.svalli.com/files/batbug-ei-sm.png

(I apologize for the partial images, the whole thing just
didn't fit on the screen.)

I contend this is TheBat!'s problem, since all of these
mail viewers show images fine from any other source that
has ever sent mail to me. Unless, of course, I'm making
a mistake in the process above -- but then it is STILL
a problem with TheBat! because if what I'm doing is wrong,
then why is it allowing me to convince it to create a
message with odd formatting?

Images in HTML mail

2012-07-06 Thread Steven P Vallière

Before I start, let me say that I've asked this several
times before and I expect to get shot down again just like
I did back then. But I still think this is a valid question:

Why is it that few email clients will display images inline
with an HTML message that TheBat! sends while they will do
so for similar messages sent from Outlook, Thunderbird,
GMail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, etc.? TheBat! also displays
messages from all of those other sources correctly, so why
is it that TheBat! cannot CONSTRUCT a message that other
programs can view correctly?

I'm sure that TheBat! is doing it right according to the
programmer's interpretation of some arcane point of law
in the mail RFCs and the other programs are wrong -- BUT
at least all of the others seem to be interoperable, while
TheBat!'s method for embedding inline images in HTML mail
seems to be the odd man out, at least as far as interoperability
goes.

Until we can convince the world to give up Thunderbird and
things like it, shouldn't TheBat! play nice and allow us to
create nice looking HTML formatted email messages that can
contain embedded images and still look right in Thunderbird
and its brethren?

Perhaps there is a magic setting that I've got wrong (FSM
knows that there are more than I'll ever know about, let
alone remember!) If so, could someone please tell me how
to configure TheBat! so that an HTML formatted email that
contains embedded images will look the same when received
by Thunderbird as it does when I press SEND in TheBat! ??

Please?

Highlights Only button reversed?

2012-07-03 Thread Steven P Vallière

I was just checking the account log (to find out when TheBat
thought the mail server stopped working) and noticed that
the button labeled Highlights Only seems to have the
OPPOSITE effect that its visual state would seem to indicate.
It is rendered as a sort of two state button that shows as
pressed (indented) or pressable (flat or outdented when the
mouse moves over it.)

To me, the PRESSED state indicates that the button is in
effect, however, the exact opposite is true: Pressing the
Highlights only button changes the log to showing ALL
events and unpressing Highlights only causes the log to
show only 'important' (i.e. highlight) messages.

Does this deserve a whole bug report or is it simple
enough that this message is enough?

Re: Report

2012-06-19 Thread Steven P Vallière

You mean, that 'System Viewer' is in TB hardcoded to IE only?

RT It clearly says so next to the setting in Preferences.

Personally, I would call that a bug in TB. As far as
*ALL* other program I have that open links are concerned,
the system viewer is the program currently configured
as the default system browser. That means that I can
get things to automatically open IE, FF, Chrome, Opera,
or even Safari (if I'm temporarily insane) when I click
a link. If TB always uses IE, then TB is wrong and broken.

There is ONE somewhat reasonable exception: Windows Update
always uses IE, regardless of the default browser setting.
But now that newer versions of Windows have a dedicated
Windows Update tool, IE isn't /visibly/ used any longer
(though I suspect that the IE core is still /invisibly/
being used by Windows Update.

Also, the original reporter mentioned that TB opens a
DIFFERENT browser when viewing a message in TEXT vs viewing
the same message in HTML. Since there seems to be only one
setting for choice of HTML viewer, a user should reasonably
expect that clicking a link in ANY view mode would open the
same browser. That also sounds like a TB bug.

Lastly, none of this matters to me because I consider it
totally insane to EVER click a link in an email, for security
reasons. I always retype them into my browser or perhaps
copy and paste them, but clicking can all too easily lead you
to a web site of evil. Then again, it might be nice if TB
had an option to provide a special warning if the link text
doesn't match the link that will be followed and/or if the
link will execute some script or macro. Then it MIGHT be
arguably safe to click a plaintext link.

G A bug would be if you set Firefox to be your default browser, and you
G get Opera when you click on a link. Not implemented is when a
G feature is not offered.

1. The fact that TB uses the system default browser when
viewing a message as TEXT shows that TB knows how to
correctly access the default system browser.

2. The fact that TB uses IE instead of the system default
browser when viewing a message as HTML would appear to
be a bug in relation to fact #1.

3. The fact that there is only one setting for which browser
TB should use, coupled with facts #1 2, would indicate
that TB is not using its own setting in one of the two
different view modes and, most would call that a bug.

4. It is possible (perhaps even likely) that the dialog where
the browser selection exists is using Microsoft Internet
Explorer as a sort of generic name instead of saying
system default browser. This could make sense due to a
combination of language translation issues combined with
the idea that many people still have IE as their default
system browser. Or not, this one is pure supposition on
my part, but it seems reasonable (to me.)

5. I'm not sure where not implemented got into this, but
if you're trying to imply that TB has not implement any
access to the default system browser, I believe that you
are incorrect. When I have Chrome as my default browser,
the links I click in TB open Chrome. When Firefox is my
default browser, those same links in TB open FireFox. I
always use text mode, which is where the original poster
reported the system default browser to work correctly.

I looked up the documentation for the (un)install registry

eliminated all of the acroBAT items) found entries for both
TheBat! 5.1.6.1 and TheBat! 5.1.6. That surprised me, since
I expected the newer one to have replaced/removed the older.
Also, I'm not well versed in UUIDs, so I don't know if I

5.1.6.1:  {09E7FC03-5E08-4D53-ABCA-9F9E2BCF6FB7}

And, FWIW, the root key for the uninstall information is

Later followup...

I used the 5.1.6.2 MSI and it did not produce the warning
message about the old 4.x version. This could be due to
either the Microsoft Fix-It utility finally having worked,
the Glary Utilities Registry Cleanup which reported issues
with uninstallers for missing programs and claimed to have
cleaned them and/or RIT changed something in the MSI.

Regardless, the issue is gone for me. Hooray!

Then I ran the new 5.1.6.1 MSI and got the same warning.
This time when I ran the tool linked above a second time,
it now shows me THREE versions of TheBat! Professional
installed: v4.0.16, v5.1.6.1, and v5.1.6! So, not only
did it NOT remove the ancient one, but now the v5.1.6
seems to be stuck as well. Sigh.

However, the tool looks promising, so I'm giving it another
attempt, largely because the options seem fairly cryptic
and/or vague. After all, I get the error I'm trying to
fix when trying to INSTALL a program, but I think I need
to tell the tool that I'm actually having trouble UNINSTALLING
a program that I successfully (as far as I knew) uninstalled
years ago.

And if it matters, I'm running on XP, too.

my ENTIRE list of favorites would appear in both the

After installing 5.1.6, the cascaded menus are working

With this feature's functionality changing with every

different random values that cause different aspects

I'd love to use a feature like that! When I right-click

these items: copy, cut, paste, undo and select all.

M Anyway, I was curious about your problem

Thanks for your interest and research, it is appreciated.

M I assume you have re-started TB many times.

At least a few dozen.

M - If I select the option 'Add items to Instant Address Pop-Up' I do get
M the groups and favourites (maybe after re-starting), but then the
M right-click context menu in Editor does NOT show any group or
M favourites. I normally don't have this option selected and I only get
M the favourites without the groups, but they also appear in editor's
M context menu.

I guess I'll try *NOT* selecting anything for inclusion in
the pop-up menu and maybe they will magically appear in the
address field context menu instead. I've not been able to
get an address list pop-up in the address fields since somewhere
in v2 or v3 (though I do get a list of things that kind of match
what I've started to type, but that doesn't always help if I do
not remember the name I'm looking for!)

I'm sure there's a setting to control which of the context
menus is displayed, but actually /finding/ a specific new
setting in TB is far too much like finding a four-leaf
clover in a very large clover field! (At least, that's
the way it feels to me!)

M - I have been playing with both v4.2.44.2 and v5.1.0.4 and they both
M seem to behave the same. So, whatever the issue/problem is, I don't
M think it is something new to v5.

The last time this happened was when I went from 4.2.44.2 to
5.0.8 in April 2011 and reverting to 4.x fixed the problem.
FWIW, I've had this list go empty several times when trying
new betas over the years, but they happen so far apart that
I forget how to fix them!

It is starting to look like I'll be going back to 4.2.44.2
again. It isn't that I need (or use) any of the new things
added to the 5.x line, I was just trying to stay current on
a product I find worthy of supporting. But it keeps breaking
the one age-old feature that I *DO* use often. Sigh.

It is too bad that the RMB context menu in the address

list that Create a new Message offers is MUCH BETTER.

I'm guessing that the Create a new Message list went
empty because the first group I had checked no longer

(I didn't show the buttons or the image icon )

What I find interesting is that the last several MSI

  4.2.42
  4.2.44
  5.0.8
  (uninstall 5.0.8)
  4.2.44
  5.0.36
  5.1.0 (this one)

So it seems rather odd that it is complaining about
the 4.0.16.2 MSI. Also, it is complaining about it
being missing from a NETWORK RESOURCE, but I have
always downloaded and installed from my boot drive,
which is definitely NOT a network drive.

Check Mail At Startup -- still broken

2010-05-12 Thread Steven P Vallière
I've asked about this before without getting any
responses, but since the issue still exists in
4.2.36.4, I thought I might as well mention it
again.

4.2.36.4 is the newest version I can find, but I'm
not sure if it is current or not, since the version
numbers being discussed on the beta list are so varied,
it is starting to get confusing.

Anyway, here's what is happening:

The Check Mail At Startup setting has been flaky
for at least the past few builds. TB is ignoring this
setting when it is started as part of my boot/auto-logon
sequence. But, if I /restart/ TB by itself (i.e. without
restarting Windows), then the setting is respected.

I'm starting to think that the Periodic Checking Each
setting might be triggering immediately when TB starts
at boot time. If so, then TB may be honoring the Check
Mail At Startup setting in spirit, but not in fact due
to an immediate check being performed by the periodic
checker. Or it could be something else, but either way,
it is slightly disturbing to have TB ALWAYS display a
fetch error when my computer reboots.

This is obviously not a critical thing, it would just be
nice for the settings to do what they're documented to
do.

Check mail at startup?

2010-04-01 Thread Steven P Vallière

This setting has been flaky for the past few builds,
at least. TB is ignoring this setting when it is
started at part of my boot/auto-logon sequence.
However, if I /restart/ TB by itself, then the setting
is respected.

This is not a critical thing, but it causes TB to
display a FETCH error every time my computer boots
because it takes POPFile longer to get started than
TB...

FW should suit your needs.

It isn't always easy to remember all of the magic features
of different folders in TB! and I figured that, since the
existing right-click menu on an email message already has
at LEAST 50 (yes, I counted them) choices, who would be
bothered by just one more that would provide a feature that
other email programs provide?

Of course, if there's a TB! macro programming language that
would allow me to create a macro that does this *AND* add
the macro to the right-click menu, then I'm golden -- as long
as the macro doesn't get lost on a version upgrade.

Inline Images

2009-12-09 Thread Steven P Vallière

When I CC'd my home address on a message I sent from work
today, I noticed that TB /still/ doesn't format HTML mail
with inline images in a way that Thunderbird can correctly
handle. For some reason, the images are all collected at
the bottom of the message, instead of where I placed them.

I'm sure that TB conforms to the /letter/ of the necessary
RFCs for this, however, it would really be nice if it could
conform to the common practice instead -- at least as an
option of via an add-in or something.

I use Thunderbird at home and receive mail from people using
many, many different email programs and the ONLY one that
generates messages with the images out of line is TB.

I understand that the weakness is actually Thunderbird's,
but no one (or almost no one) is /paying/ them to fix things
and create a fully compliant email program.

I'm reasonably sure this request will not get implemented,
but as a paying customer of TB for the past seven years, I
felt I had a right to request it (again). If Thunderbird were
some fly-by-night, barely used program I wouldn't bother, but
since it is free and rather popular (especially among my friends,
family, co-workers and customers), this doesn't seem to be an
unreasonable request.

Of course, it could also be fixed by RIT Labs contributing the
necessary code to the Thunderbird project to correctly render
messages in the format TB is using...

Edit as New?

2009-12-09 Thread Steven P Vallière

Didn't previous a version (or versions) of TB have a menu
option for messages to Edit as new? I may be thinking
of some other email program, but the only other one I use
is Thunderbird, and it doesn't have that option (and I don't
think it ever did).

It is not uncommon for me to want to re-send an old message,
sometimes to the same people, sometime to new people, and
sometimes with additional or updated information.

While it is /possible/ to do this in TB by cutting the old
message and pasting it into a new one, that loses the old
addressee lists, which are tedious enough to enter now that
the address drop-menu is gone from the To:, CC: and BCC:
fields in the Edit Mail Message window.

If I can manually get Edit as New back on the menu and/or
get the drop-lists back in the address fields, could someone
/please/ tell me how? Thanks!

The problem certainly /looks/ the same, but I tried playing with
the only Add Items to the Instant Address Pop-up check I could
find (on the 'Other' tab of an individual address book entry's
properties), both adding some and removing some and nothing had
any effect on the popup menu.

I sure wish I could get the thing back as I used it ALL the time!
The search/suggest feature is painfully slow (and requires me
to remember more than I want as well) and going to the address
book itself is worse.

I can empathize with RIT on this issue as one of the programs I
maintain has more configuration options (and paths to those options)
than are documented anywhere except the code -- just like TheBat
(although TB has many more than mine). The problem is that a tiny
change to the way one setting is interpreted can ripple beyond
anything the programmer expects.

I'll see if removing ALL of my favorites (which appears to be the
shorter, easier to find version of the Add Items to the Instant
Address Pop-up setting), restarting TB and then adding them one at
a time brings back the popup. Sadly, I doubt anything will until
RIT has the time to look into this -- i.e. not anytime soon.

Oh well. It didn't help at all. And the new set of favorites has fewer
items than previously, so it should also meet the uncheck any ONE of
the addresses' Add items... box test as well.

And, FWIW, at one point even though I had all of the favorites
UNCHECKED, I still got the popup menu from the Create a new message
drop-down. And the opposite also happened: when I had favorites
CHECKED, I got only Quick Templates on the Create a new message
drop-down. After restarting those generally went away.

Now I'm confused as to why empty groups appear on the drop-down as
well as why I cannot get the drop-down to appear in response to a
right-click in an address field on a new message.

I love TB and I don't like seeing it in sickness and pain...

Sorting Office Problem/Suggestion

2009-05-29 Thread Steven P Vallière

[At least] One of my filters has apparently stopped working.
Sadly, it is the one that deletes all of the messages that
SpamAssassin has tagged as SPAM, so its failure is having a
quite noticeable effect on my mail volume. I have the
condition as:

  Header field X-Spam-Status contains Yes
  OR Subject contains :SPAM:

And yet I still receive hundreds of messages that meet one
or both of those conditions.

Since it is /possibly/ (though highly unlikely) that an earlier
filter is grabbing them, I looked at the log to check, but alas,
the log only has the past few hours and shows none of the messages
I was looking for. I wanted to increase the log size, or have it
written to disk, but I cannot find any log control settings in the
preferences dialog.

So... I have a suggestion/request:

I think it would be nice to have an option that tells TB! to add
an additional mail header that names the filter TB! matched for
the message. For example, something like:

  X-TheBat-Filter: Mail From Joe

And maybe even an additional option to add the part of the rule
that triggered the match, if such a thing is known:

  X-TheBat-FilterRule: Sender contains j...@example.com

I know that the second part is asking a lot, but I think that the
first should be possible and it would keep a very useful piece of
information available as long as the message, without requiring a
very large log.

Would anyone care to second this idea?

Lost feature?

2009-05-19 Thread Steven P Vallière

I really miss something from older versions of TB! I'm not sure
when it disappeared (or if it is an option I can get back) but...

Once upon a time, I could right-click in the To:, CC:, or BCC:
field and get the same drop-down menu that appears when I click
the little down arrow next to the Create new message button.
That ability made adding additional addressees /really/ quick
and easy.

Now I only see the standard cut-n-paste menu for an edit control.
The replacements for the feature don't work nearly as well for
me:

 * Going to the address book to find an address feels very
cumbersome. It might not be so bad if the groups were
included in the address list instead of hidden under a
control that looks like it allows you to select a
/different/ address book. Or perhaps displaying the
names in a tree-list with the groups shown as expandable
branches (and selectable themselves to send to everyone
in a group) would be OK.

 * The thing that pops up when you enter part of an address
might be OK if I could always remember the address, but
sometimes I'm sending to an old support address that I've
not used for a year of more and I just don't remember.
The pop-up also seems to appear a bit too slowly to me,
but that is probably adjustable somewhere.

I also wish this thing could be told whether to match the
substring anywhere in the email address (as it does now)
or only at the beginning of 'words' within the address.
And just showing a list of things with the same first
letter is sometimes nice, too. In other words, I like
the way Thunderbird does this much better and wish TB!
did the same, or at least offered the option to do the
   same.

like the last message viewed in a folder and a folder's sort
column. I'm not sure how many versions back this started,
because I thought it was my mistake. However, for the past

looking at the newest message, sorted by the 'Received' column.
When I return to a folder, it might be sorted on a different

Minor HTML render bug

2008-07-11 Thread Steven P Vallière

Normally a blank line (or at least a bit of vertical
whitespace) is added after both /p and /blockquote
tags. However, TB (at least 4.0.26) is not doing that
for the blockquote. Example:

pThis is paragraph one/p
blockquotethis is a quote/blockquote
pThis is paragraph two/p

Should render something like this:

This is paragraph one

   this is a quote

This is paragraph two

But TB 4.0.26 is rendering it like this instead:

This is paragraph one

   this is a quote
This is paragraph two

I know this is pretty minor, but it caused a recent message
I received to be difficult to read because the headings
ended up snuggled up to the /previous/ section instead of
standing out as they did in the original.

Address Book == Delete Message?

2008-02-21 Thread Steven P Vallière

Yesterday, I accidentally noticed that the address book
button on the toolbar now deletes the currently selected
message instead of opening the address book. The button
shows 'Delete' as the tooltip as well. That was with
4.0.14.1 and is still true with 4.0.14.3.

Picking 'Address Book' from the Tools menu works as
expected, as does pressing F8.

FWIW, I've never attempted to make any changes to the
default toolbar or any items on it. Also, I'm not sure
if this is related, but the toolbar icons look strange...
They seem to have some odd visual artifacts (see attached
GIF images [main and edit message toolbar images included]).

Also, in case this is relevant, I used thebat_pro_4-0-14.msi
to upgrade from 3.x to 4.x and the rar to get 4.0.14.1 and
4.0.14.3 and I'm running on XP; Windows Explorer shows this:
Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254 : Service Pack 2)

Re: Address Book == Delete Message?

I just tried right-clicking on the button bar and choosing
'Customise' to see if I could fix the broken address book
button. The attached GIF shows what I see in the customise
dialog both before *AND AFTER* I removed the spurious
delete button!

Here's what I did:

1. Right-click the button bar
2. Pick 'Customise...' from the popup menu
3. Click on the 'Delete' item at the bottom of the list
of buttons
4. Click on the 'Remove' button in the Customise dialog
(the 'delete' item disappears from the list)
5. Close the customise dialog
6. Hover the mouse over the button that should be the
address book and see that it still has a 'Delete'
tool tip
7. Right-click the button bar
8. Pick 'Customise...' from the popup menu
9. Notice that the 'Delete' item is back
10. Report this strange behavior to TBBETA

Test Message

2007-12-20 Thread Steven P Vallière
Apologies in advance for wasting space on a test, but...

Either the volume of messages on this list is approaching
zero, or something is intercepting them before they get to
my local mail server. I say that because I've seen only
one message here since Dec 12, 2007 and _that_ was four days
ago.

So, I'm sending this test message, hoping it will be sent
back to me so that I may check to see if volume is low or
if there is some other strange issue. My email provider
is also watching to see if this (or any) message is received
from the list as well.

Filters Process Out of Order

2007-12-14 Thread Steven P Vallière

Is it already a known issue that the filters are not
being processed in order (from top to bottom) of the
filter list?

The sixth filter in my list deletes all messages
that have :SPAM: in the subject.

The 68th filter in my list moves all messages that
do not have the 'X-Text-Classification' header into
a folder named 'unclassified'.

My unclassified folder currently contains 1836 messages,
1237 of them have subjects beginning with :SPAM:!

Looking at the log shows that, for some reason, some of
the :SPAM: messages are not matching the 6th filter, but
instead are being processed by the 68th!

Hopefully this will be fixed VERY SOON.

Oh, and if it is not a known/open issue, let me know and
I'll gladly add it to the bug tracker.

Address Book Won't Close!

2007-09-19 Thread Steven P Vallière

I don't know how I triggered this... except that MS Visual
Studio 2005 was closing (which can take a few minutes on
my machine, for some reason) and clicked the close button

Now it refuses to close. Neither File|Exit nor the close
button works. Otherwise the window seems fully functional.

Here it seems that the editor window reopens in the correct

close the editor on screen 1 or 2, next time it will open on
screen 3 (my leftmost, where I run TB) in the size I closed
it on 1 or 2, but it looks like it might be using the default
window positioning as it looks to me like each time I open it,
the new window is created about 16 pixels (or so) down and to
the right, until it cycles back to the upper left corner of
the screen.

MM 2) message finder and address book window opens on monitor, where is main
MM window placed, so when I place it on second, it is opened there, when I
MM move it to first, close and reopen, it is opened on second. And vice versa

The address book seems to /try/ to retain position info, but
if it was closed when spanning two screens, it comes back
entirely on the screen where TB is running. The address does
remember the window size correctly.

The message finder remembers the window size, but always opens
CENTERED over TB.

MM Smartpad seems working correctly, it stays on second where i left it, even
MM main window is on first one.

Cannot say as SmartPad is a feature I've never needed, because
I've no idea what it is or how to access it.

MM Anybody can confirm?

FWIW, I'm using three monitors, sequenced 3,1,2 with 1 as the
primary screen, and TB running maximized on 3.

MM [-] (#0006431) Message Finder window don't keep the

The Message Finder maximized issues appear to be fixed,
mostly, I think. I say mostly, I think because I'm not
sure if the Message Finder is intended to save its window
position or not. If NOT, then it works perfectly. If it
should be saving the window position, it is not as it
always opens centered over TheBat!'s main window (on any
monitor, so that's a good thing, to me smile). But if
I had TheBat! on one monitor, and the Message Finder on
another, the Message Finder doesn't come back where I left
it (but it DOES come back in the same size/state).

I'm not positive yet, but I think that the Edit Mail Message
window may have a similar issue of always coming back on the
monitor where TheBat! is running. If I can be sure of it,
I'll post a follow-up message.

BTW, neither of these are serious because the various windows
at least appear directly over the program being used, so
unless someone argues, I'd mark them as low priority.

PS: These were found in beta 19 (I skipped 18)

MM Thank you! Did this version resolve all other issues
MM related to third monitor that you wrote before?

For the main window, I'd say that the things I was seeing
are no longer happening. However, the Message Finder is
now misbehaving when it is closed while maximized -- even
when the Message Finder was maximized on the primary monitor.

When I open the Message Finder after closing it maximized, it
flashes on the appropriate screen, then minimizes to the
primary monitor (based on where the task bar icon appears).
Then I must try to restore it twice to get it to open, and then
it opens maximized on the monitor where TheBat!'s main window
is residing, instead of the monitor where the Message Finder
was closed.

However, when the Message Finder is closed when restored
(i.e. neither maximized nor minimized) it opens again in the
same SIZE it was closed, but centered over TheBat!'s main
window.

If I can do anything to help (such as running some tests with
an instrumented build) please let me know. If you want to
email me directly instead of through the list, replace thebat
in my email address with svalli.

Message Finder doesn't open correctly in 3.99.10

2007-08-13 Thread Steven P Vallière

I'm one of the few folks using TB on a three monitor
system.

If I close the message finder when it is maximized on
my TB screen, the next time I try to open it all I see
is flash of the window opening correctly, followed by
a thin, vertical gray (window edge color) bar along
the edge of the screen and the message finder button
appearing on a DIFFERENT screen's task bar.

Picking restore from the finder's window menu allows
me to see and use it. I can further work around this
by always remembering that one can never, ever close
any of TB's windows when they are maximized without
bad things happening next time the windows are accessed.
Maybe, if the bug is not ever going to be fixed, RIT
could add an option to disable the maximize buttons and
commands instead...

Extra info: my displays are numbered 3, 2, 1 (in the
physical layout) and #2 is my primary display. The
primary display is the one with 0,0 at the upper left
corner, for those who don't know. I run TB on the left
hand monitor (#3), stretched to fill the screen (BUT NOT
MAXIMIZED because that bug hasn't been fixed in the
years since it was reported and confirmed).

The gray bar that I see is located where the colons
(:) are in the image below (use a fixed width font),
right on the very edge, of, but not visible on, the
primary monitor (#2):

   +-+-+-+
   |:| | |
   | 3 :| 2 | 1 |
   |:| | |
   +-+-+-+

Apparently, the unfixed bug with maximized windows on
non-primary displays has been extended to include the
Message Finder window. Not sure how long this has been
true, but I suspect it will last until RIT gets their
display library fixed or chooses a different one.

Re: HTML Images wrong?

2007-06-29 Thread Steven P Vallière
Thanks to the F9 hint from Peter Meyns (THANK YOU!)
I've discovered (by using it on the sent message I
created from scratch in TB!) that I was incorrect
in what I thought I'd found.

The sent message showed that TB! had indeed included
the Content-Disposition header, but it explicitly set
all of the images as attachment which, as I understand
the RFC, means that none of them should be rendered in-
line.

That message had been created as HTML/Plain text format.
So, I tried one with HTML only format instead. This time,
TB! didn't use the Content-Disposition headers at all.

I guess it is time to copy these messages into RIT's
bug tracker database.
