So this seems like a bug, in that I understand Therion should read all
sources before processing the survey and map input. With sources, this
seems not to be happening, and Therion is crashing inappropriately if the
sources are not listed in the 'correct' order.

Not able to test just now, but think I noticed the same thing some time ago.I
recall it took me a few attempts to understand what was happening. Would likely
stall an inexperienced user. As with Martin, the durable solution I came up
with was to name each station to be joined. Inconvenient when
Not sure if this is a Survex Aven issue or an issue with the way Therion
parses data to a *.3d file, or indeed whether it is because Im using an old
version of Aven.
I was surveying fore-sight back-sight pairs, first time in a cave for
ages... so initially made a naïve oversight:
