Re: [JAWS-Users] can't assign hot key to jaws 2018

2018-06-07 Thread chris judge
When this happens to me, as it does all the time, I just press enter again
and the hot key is set. Remember you must first remove the hot key
assignment if you have it set for a previous version of jaws, as you can't
assign the same hot key to more than one version.

Hi. Do the other function keys in conjunction with the jaws key work? Can
you, for instance, list your links by pressing jaws key f7? I know a while

Having problems with Jaws announceing too much in Edge such as:
entering navigation, exiting navigation, entering search, exiting search,
entering form, exiting form, etc here’s how to fix this so it works like other
browsers:

turn off the automatic notification of web page positions in Microsoft Edge
with the following steps.

1. Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
2. Press Insert+6, (the 6 on the alphabetic keypad’s number row), to open
the “JAWS Settings Center”.
3. Press the down arrow, and then press the letter “s” to go to the Speech
Verbosity tree view item, and press the right arrow to open it.
4. Press the down arrow once, and note which verbosity level you are
using.
5. Press the down arrow again to “Configure Verbosity Levels”, and press
the right arrow to open it.
6. Press the down arrow until you reach the verbosity level you are using
and press the Spacebar to open the “Preferences” dialog box.
7. Press the down arrow until you reach the “Position Information”
setting, press the Spacebar to uncheck it, and press Enter to close the dialog
box.
8. Press the Enter key again to save the setting and close the “Setting
Center”.
After closing settings center, jaws will ask if you want to save the changes
you’ve made!
Wah lah!

Re: [JAWS-Users] desktop 1

2018-03-24 Thread chris judge
The reason why you're hearing, desktop one, instead of just desktop, is
because windows 10 has the ability to create secondary desktops, called
virtual desktops. For fun, press control windows |D, then press insert T,
you will hear, desktop 2. You can move between desktops with control windows
right arrow and control windows left arrow. I haven't yet found a use for
this, but I suppose if you were using the same computer for home and work,
and you wanted to keep your opened programs separate, it might come in
handy.
You can close the virtual desktops with control Windows F4.

I've had a similar issue before. Of course, when you go to disable uac, and
choose ok, uac comes up and asks if you really want to disable it. The
experience I had was that jaws didn't read the uac message at that point for
some reason, so once you've clicked ok after choosing, set uac to zero, wait
a few seconds and then press altY to say yes to uac, and hopefully it will
implement the change. Not sure about windows 10, but it seems to me that in
windows 7 you need to restart the pc to have the changes take effect.

Teresa,

JAWS 2018 is the latest, as Mr. Ed already replied. Your understandable
confusion comes about because VFO changed the way versions are numbered.
Until the year 2016, each version had a one- or two-digit number. the last
in this series was JAWS 18. This past year, in the closing months of 2017,
VFO decided against calling the new version 19, and instead assigned it the
name of the upcoming year, 2018. From now on, I assume this will be the
pattern, with version 2019 coming out next fall.

of JAWS. I tried googling that, got no real good results.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Hi. If you install jaws you will get all of the training material under the
help menu. It's presented in Daisy format. Jaws has it's own daisy player,
FS reader, which works well.

Hello I was wondering if there any books or tutorials of jaws that are
current so I can understand it better. I did come across this one book from
the access technology institute and the book does cover jaws and is
95 dollars and is on Jaws 2018, does anyone know if its well worth the money
cause was reading about it and they walk through every setting and with the
book you get all text and audio formats to help you out. I am coming from
Window Eyes and use NVDA that is also a good screen reader so just wondering
what other people think. Thank you.

Re: [JAWS-Users] WHY UPGRADE TO 2018?

2018-03-13 Thread chris judge
Hi John. I've been away from the list for a few days, but thought I'd way in
with my thoughts on upgrading.

I have worked with blind clients for many years now, and this topic comes up
everytime there is an upgrade, First, remember, if you upgrade, and there
are problems with the new version for whatever reason, you can always revert
back, and eventually the issues will be ironed out. What I tell my clients
is, consider owning a computer like owning a vehicle. There has to be some
expected maintenance costs, and if you can afford it, it's a good idea to
keep up on those things. What if you skip 2018, but something comes out
in2019 that you simply can't live without, then you are behind another
version and it will cost you more to upgrade at this point. I know some
folks simply can't afford it, but my feeling has been, if you can, and if
you are planning to stick with jaws, it is prudent to keep up with the
updates.

Hi group,

I am now using Jaws 18 in its latest configuration. I just priced out the
upgrade to Jaws 2018 and it will cost me $400 including the SMA. Before I
make that kind of investment, I'd appreciate it if someone would tell me
whether Jaws 2018 is worth the investment. I'm happy with jaws 18. I
would have no objection to upgrading if someone can give me good reasons for
that change. I have been studying the messages on our list and to tell you
the truth, what I'm hearing is somewhat discouraging. Many people are
having issues with 2018. However, I'd be willing to bet that the same thing
happened when Jaws 18 was introduced. There is always a time where people
have to adjust to new technology or software.

Good morning all! I'm trying to help with one of our employees here at work
on an issue where JAWS freezes unexpectedly when switching from one window
to another using the Alt Tab key. The issue is difficult to resolve because
it doesn't happen every time he switches windows. It does happen two to
three times a day on average, and is hindering his efforts to perform his
job. I have offered several solutions, but nothing has worked yet. When
JAWS freezes, he has to wait some 30 seconds before speech comes back.

I wanted to reach out to the list to see if any of you had any ideas as to
how I could minimize this behavior. I would appreciate any feedback.
Thanks very much!

I do not believe you can transfer a book from the card to the internal
memory.
You can move a book from the internal memory to the SD Card.

If you hit the 3 key quickly twice in a row, it will offer the option to
move the book to the card.
Confirm with the pound key as prompted.

That has always worked for me.

Navigate to the file you want to attach. If you want to attach multiple
files from the same folder, navigate to the first file, hold down the
Control key, press the down arrow until you get to the next file you want
and then press the Space bar while still holding down the Control key.
Continue holding down the control key and using the down arrow and Space bar
until all files are selected.

Use the copy command Control+c.

Go to your outlook Inbox. Do not open any files.
Use the Control+v paste command.

Like magic a new message will open, the file(s) will be attached and you
should be in the To field.

HTH,
Annette

Hi,

I accidentally installed Avast when installing CCleaner.

I thought I removed it all after using revo uninstaller.

On google here, it states when using the tool Avast has to remove it, it
boots into safe mode?

Is there another way, as I never messed with safe mode before.

you don't have to change to the laptop layout if you are useing a desktop
keyboard.
you can open the jaws settings center with jaws 6. then press control shift
d to change to the default settings center.
then arrow to keyboard, general, then to desktop jaws key and press the
space bar on it to switch it between capslock or insert for the jaws key.
then you won't have to reach across the keyboard to get to the insert jaws
key.
but in this mode you have to press alt capslock to turn the capslock key on
or off.

When set to laptop layout, the caps lock acts as a toggle. If you want to
invoke the capslock for instance, if you want to type aan entire word in
caps, press it twice quickly. Jaws will say, caps lock on. Once you are
finished, toggle it off by pressing it twice quickly again.

My problem is that I cannot turn the caps lock key back to using it as a
caps lock, so when I type, everything is in caps and if I use the shift key
to capitalize the first letter of something and leave the rest in small
letters, it doesn't work.

Great question about how to reach the keys...
I'll tell you the two ways I do it.

1. I have a desktop keyboard. The first way is to move my right hand to the
NumPad and press and hold the Zero/Insert Key with my thumb.
2. Then with my left thumb on the Windows Key, rather than the ALT Key, I
reach up with left index finger to find the F4 Key and press.

The second option.
Since I always run JAWS with Laptop Layout (even when on a desktop
keyboard), I can press the CapsLock and WinKey with the left hand, and use
my right hand to locate and press the F4 Key.

Hello list,

The dump command (JAWSKey+WindowsKey+F4) will restart JAWS automatically
while it creates a dump file to show what was happening at the time of the
loss of speech. It would be potentially very helpful to contact the Support
department and offer the Dump File with an explanation of what you were
doing when it the loss of speech occurred and how often you are seeing this.

These issues are difficult to track down as they happen randomly and most
certainly have something to do with JAWS interacting with UIA from Windows.
We are making progress on this every day and appreciate your continued
feedback and support in tracking these down.

Smile, yes that is tricky with small hands. If you set the keyboartd to
laptop layout you will have assigned the caps lokc key as an altermate jaws
modifier. I recommend doing this anyway as it gives you a second jaws
modifier key, which makes certain keystrokes easier. If you need the caps
lock, you can always double tap the caps lock key to turn on caps lock
temporarily. Just remember to toggle it off when you are finished with it.
You can then hold the windows and caps lock key with one hand, reach up with
your right hand and press f4.

Hi.
You're able to run jaws 15 on windows 8.1. You'll just need an available
authorization for your registration key. If you need to check that, go to
http://fsactivate.com and there should be a link there to check remaining
activations. It will want either your serial number or your registration
key. Find one of those and put it in. If it tells you that you have either 1
or 0 activations remaining you have the option of requesting a refresh of
the activation count on that same site. That is free, it just takes a day or
so for someone at fs to get around to the request.

Armed with a fresh activation, you'll be able to install and activate jaws
on the new computer even if it is windows 8.1. You may even have upgrades
remaining that allow to run jaws 16 without paying anything. To check this,
on the current computer go to the jaws help menu and choose about. It should
tell you how many upgrades your SMA has. If it is more than 0 you can run
jaws 16. That is of course, assuming you check that on a copy of jaws15
which is activated to your activation code. If you can, then on the new
computer you might as well grab the latest copy of
JAWS16 and just install that instead of sticking with 15.

It is to your best interest to maintain the jaws SMA. If you have a home
license you can do that for 120 dollars every two years, which compared to
how things were a few years ago, is not too awfully terrible.

as to the start screen, to get windows 8.1 to have a start menu instead of a
start screen you require a third party application. The most popular one is
classic shell. When installing that, I recommend that you have it do only
the start menu, don't have it mess with windows explorer or any of the other
options. Those are all for features you'll probably do just fine using as
they are. Another user on this thread mentioned that windows 10 has the
option to use the start menu again, and this is correct. Just wanted to try
and avoid any confusion on that. Only windows 8 and windows 8.1 are using
just the start screen. Once you get used to windows 8.1 you will probably
like it a lot. It is a very fast OS, pretty dog gone efficient, secure and
stable. I have been using its built in windows defender, which unlike
windows 7's windows defender, is an actual antimalware application quite
like Microsoft's own Security Essentials program. Windows 8.1 boots really
fast and generally runs well on even pretty lousy computers that you would
expect to only see windows xp run well on. I have it on a cheap tablet
computer and a rather expensive laptop and they both are doing pretty fine.

The biggest downsides are the start screen and the windows task manager.
If you like the task manager in windows 7 you will probably be disappointed
with the one in 8.1. I make do with a mixture of the windows 8.1 task
manager and another program from microsoft called Process Explorer, which
for you geeky types is part of the sysinternals suite, and free in other
words. Btw, the windows 8.1 task manager is pretty nice, all things
considered. My problem with it, which is just my own oppinion, is that it
takes longer to open than the windows 7 task manager did, and it is more
difficult to use when you have no speech than the windows 7 task manager.
That said it is even possible to get the windows 7 task manager to work on a
windows 8.1 computer but last I tried that, there were certain tasks it
couldn't kill that the regular windows 8.1 task manager had no trouble with.

Also, the start screen for me is not too much of an issue either. I solve
the problem by not using it *grin*. I put shortcuts in my task bar and on my
desktop to most of the stuff I need, and I use windows explorer to get to
what ever I can't get to from the desktop, the task bar, or the start
screen's search box. Of course I do use the search feature of the start
screen, and so that makes a liar out of me. On my expensive computer I have
just the start screen. On my tablet, I have installed Classic Shell. The
biggest complaint about classic shell on that tablet is that it doesn't
always put input focus on the edit box to search for items when I use my
windows key, so weird things happen when I immediately start typing to
filter down to what I want. Btw, in case you do get windows 8.1, you'll
probably notice you can't really find a search box on the start screen at
all. Not to worry, just type what you want it to filter for anywhere on the
start screen and it'll give you a list of results, even though you weren't
typing in an edit

[JAWS-Users] Getting new computer. Seeking input regarding setup and potential JAWS issues.

2015-04-26 Thread Chris Murphy
Hi Everyone,

I'll be getting a new PC in the near future. Currently, I am using Windows
7, JAWS 15.0.5056, 64 bit.

I think I'll have the choice of getting it with Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
I'm inclining toward getting Windows 7 since that is what I'm accustomed to
using, but I'd appreciate any recommendations. I'm sure that many of you
have had experience dealing with this same decision.

I'm wondering if there are significant JAWS issues for Windows 8.1. I've
heard that the format of the initial information of the display for Windows
8.1 is very different from Windows 7 unless you modify the view.

I've also heard that in Windows 8.1, there is a way of having the usual
Start Menu listing the desktop applications so that it resembles Windows 7
but I'm not sure about that. I would want to have that view as the default
if I need to get Windows 8.1.

My sighted husband and I will be working on setting up the new system
together. I'm not clear about the logistics of establishing my JAWS
authorization for the new system, but I expect we'll we in touch with
Freedom Scientific for that and some other details.

I very much appreciate any suggestions or recommendations people may have.
If anyone has cautionary comments or concerns or information about potential
complications that I should be aware of, I'll be very interested to hear
those too. I admit I'd much prefer to get Windows 7 rather than Windows 8.1
unless I hear recommendations to the contrary.

Thanks very much!

Chris Murphy

Re: [JAWS-Users] [EXTERNAL] jaws sometimes reading html code

2014-11-16 Thread Chris Murphy

Starting in the last few weeks, I'm noticing that on Weather Underground pages
that I go to a lot, JAWS is reading HTML code that it ignored previously. It
takes quite a bit of paging down and searching to get past this stuff to find
the actual weather information.

I'm curious to know if anyone has discovered an explanation for this. I was
relieved in a way to find out that others have been experiencing something
similar with various web pages recently.

I use windows 7 with JAWS 15.0.5056. I have not done any updates in several
months.

Here is a link to a weather underground page in case anyone wants to try it:

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hey, what's up with this. While viewing some web pages all of a sudden jaws
will start reading the HTML code instead of the text on the page. Has anyone
experienced this? This doesn't happen all of the time.. It just jumps up
sometimes and starts reading the code when I follow a link. I have tried
reloading a page that it is reading the code to see if it will solve the
problem. No dice. Any ideas?

Hi Rick,
I used to go to the regular Weather Underground but started using the mobile

I tried to use the up and down arrows, there was nothing. Even in JAWS

would go to a web site and JAWS would say, no links. I did a repair on
JAWS, but no change. FS is working on this problem. Just wondering if
anyone else had experienced the same thing. Two interesting points: NVDA

I'm glad somebody raised this issue. Eric, I hope you follow this thread.

For reasons that will be clearer below, I encountered the same issue while
trying to renew my prescriptions at Express-Scripts.com. I added the RX's
to my cart, but then I couldn't get Jaws to check out. There was an item
that said four items, but no matter whether I hit enter on it, tried
left-clicking it with the Jaws cursor, used Convenient OCR, etc. I could
not get it to activate. Jaws recognized it as a Span Element, whatever
that is.

I didn't want to send the screen to Tech Support because it would
obviously reveal medical information. But, if that is necessary to
resolve this issue, I can probably set up a reminder in my calendar and do
that in mid-February when I can add thing to the cart again.

I was able to use System Access which recognized the four items as a
link.
Unfortunately, once I did that, I couldn't duplicate the issue because I
had no more prescriptions to fill. Therefore, I cannot reproduce this
issue at this time, but Express Scripts is a large mail-order pharmacy
that I'm sure fills a lot of prescriptions for others.

It works better with windows 8, but you are also getting other bug

Good Mornin',

I need to know when in the system's tray it states, the audio device is not
running what that means and how do I fix it?

This is on a win/7 laptop with Jaws 13.

Today, I had a very very scarey incident happen when I turned on my laptop.
Jaws came up loud and clear, but I heard no windows sounds, that was the
weirdest thing to ever happen and I am just not sure why that happened.
I could not get to desktop, start menu, sys tray nothing. I felt the fan and
air flow and knew the laptop was on, but not any window sounds, then after a
few minutes like around 5 long enough for me to make coffee, the window's
sound finally came up but it wasn't very loud.
So I checked the system's tray, and this is where I usually find that
message stating, the audio device is not running, could that have any cause
for window's sound not to have made it's boot up chime?

Please help, now I am afraid to reboot or turn off!

Listen to God's still voice, he is our great shepard now and forever, let us

You might sometimes drift, get back in the middle of God's will, where the

I think it did, it just took a long time to do. Plan on leaving it for
at least an hour once it has begun. If jaws doesn't start, you can hit
windows-ctrl-u to bring up narrator and figure out what is going on,
likely it will still be installing.

Nope. Of course, it isn't normal for a laptop battery to be worth
anything after a few years, so what you are hearing may well be
perfectly normal.

one year isn't unheard of. A lot depends on how hot the machine gets.
My last one went through batteries in about a year in a half. My new
one is still working after about 2.5 years, so it does vary a lot.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Please help with XP to 7 upgrading considerations

Best way is to use network cables to hook both computers to your router.
Wireless networking may be a lot slower, depending on the setup, so
using cable is the best way.

You have to buy a program if you wish to move programs. For
documents, downloads and the like, windows 7 comes with a transfer
tool that will do the job, you simply gook up both machines to the
same network and run the windows easy transfer program. Your outlook
express files can be read with windows live mail, which may or may not
be included in 7, but you can download it. If all this is too much,
get a tech to help, paying for their time may be easier than beating
your head against the wall.
