[ONTBIRDS]Re: Sage Thrasher in Mitchell's Bay (Chatham-Kent)

2021-11-16 Thread Jeremy Bensette
The Sage Thrasher put on a very subtle show from about 3:30 to sunset today.
During most of this time it would have been near impossible to spot without
already knowing where it was. Location again is Mitchell’s Bay Lake Shore Trail
/ South Lakeshore Trail / Lake Shore Trail near the end of Angler Line near
Lake St Clair, a few hundred metres down the gravel trail. We last saw it about
10m east of the second bench and sign about birds in the Mitchell’s Bay Area.
Google maps location URL below in previous email.

The Sage Thrasher has been seen again this morning by many birders, only about
5 metres from where we last saw it yesterday evening. Location is South

[ONTBIRDS] Cave Swallow - Point Pelee National Park

2020-10-31 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
I just spotted a Cave Swallow from the platform at the east end of the De
Laurier Trail in PPNP while guiding a group birding tour. It was foraging over
the marsh to the east of us and drifted south out of view. Be careful if
searching, there are still Tree Swallows and probably Barn and Northern
Rough-winged in the area.

De Laurier trail is located about 4km south of the entrance of Point Pelee
National Park, at the end of Point Pelee Drive, southeast of Leamington in
Essex County.

Good birding,

2020-09-08 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
My co-worker Eric Briggs just told me he has seen the Swallow-tailed Kite
several times this afternoon flying over the trees and field adjacent to Point
Pelee Drive, between Pelee Wings Nature Store and the entrance to Point Pelee
National Park (Southeast of Leamington). Like the other day it has been flying
low, catching dragonflies/grasshoppers and eating them on the wing. Not
surprisingly it was not seen yesterday in the strong wind. Good birding, and
good luck to those who did not get to see it earlier this week!

[Ontbirds] Adult Black-legged Kittiwake - Leamington

2019-12-22 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi there,

I found an adult Black-legged Kittiwake in the late afternoon at Leamington
Marina. I was about 100 feet into a walk and of the hundreds of gulls all over
the marina, this one was close enough to identify without binoculars! It looked
comfy sitting on the water so I hurried back to my car to grab my camera. About
one minute later I kissed goodbye my close-up photo op as I noticed it flying
overhead toward Seacliff Beach. I got a few record shots as it flew away then
searched around a bit but did not refind it.

Hopefully it just went to feed on the lake and will be back tomorrow. Pretty
amazing timing to have noticed it like that just before it flew away, though it
is of course disappointing that I had my camera and popcorn for chumming gulls
in the car nearby! I think this may be the only Black-legged Kittiwake sighting
in Essex County and Point Pelee area this year, and adult plumage is
exceptionally rare in this area.

Leamington Marina (ferry dock parking lot) is at the south end of Erie St in
Leamington, Essex County. If not specifically for the Kittiwake, this is a
great spot to look for gulls as there are usually at least a few hundred here.

Re: [Ontbirds] Spotted Towhee - Prince Edward Point

2019-12-11 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Tim and I had great looks at the Spotted Towhee about an hour ago (12:30 pm)
after waiting nearly 2 hours. During those two hours it called a couple times,
briefly flew by twice, and otherwise was completely out of sight. If still
searching for it, bring warm clothes, some bird seed, and be patient.

Drive past Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory and park near the gate that
blocks the road. Walk a couple hundred metres past the gate until you see some
seed spread on the ground at a left bend in the road. This is where the Spotted
Towhee comes out to feed.

[Ontbirds] Red Phalarope - Point Pelee National Park

2019-09-05 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
This evening I found a Red Phalarope flying around over Lake Pond in the Point
Pelee marsh while I was out in my kayak. It was an adult part way through
moulting into winter plumage, with an orange body, white undertail, and white
face with black smudge over the eyes. I first heard it calling as it flew
around overhead and managed a good look and some photos of it. Pretty exciting
and unexpected!

Hopefully it landed somewhere and will be around this weekend, but who knows.

Point Pelee is at the end of Point Pelee Dr., southeast of Leamington, Essex
County. To get to the marsh (kayak/canoe required, can be rented at Boardwalk
store or Pelee Wings a couple km away) turn left into the Marsh Boardwalk
parking lot. There are usually other shorebirds, gulls, etc. out in the marsh.
Tonight there was a Stilt Sandpiper, Short-billed Dowitcher, and Lesser
Black-backed Gull among the other more common species. If you’re into paddling
this is a very worthwhile visit!

Good birding,

[Ontbirds] Black-bellied Whistling-Duck - Leamington

2019-09-03 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
The Black-bellied Whistling-Duck is at Sturgeon Creek in Leamington again this
afternoon. I just saw it across the water from The Happy Snapper marina. From
the building near the entrance, look approximately southeast across Sturgeon
Creek in the direction of the electrical box labelled “50 49”. It is sitting on
the rocks near a little bay shape in the new naturalized area. It is pretty
windy today so I imagine it won’t move too much.

The Happy Snapper marina is located across the street from the intersection of
Bevel Line and Monarch Lane, just before the bridge to Point Pelee Drive (near
Pelee Wings), southeast of Leamington, Essex County.

I just found two Snowy Egrets in the field-turned-wetland at the intersection
of Mersea Rd 2 and Mersea Rd 21 north of Hillman Marsh, east of Leamington in
Essex County. This is the same location as the Black-bellied Whistling-Duck.
They are foraging among at least 8 Great Egrets and might require some patience
to see, as they have been walking in and out of view behind some cattails.
There is also a Stilt Sandpiper here, along with a decent selection of common
shorebirds.

[Ontbirds] Black-bellied Whistling Duck near Hillman Marsh

2019-08-21 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
The Black-bellied Whistling Duck is currently in the flooded field north of
Hillman Marsh where Mersea Rd 2 intersects Mersea Rd 21, east of Leamington,
Essex County. I heard it calling yesterday evening after a storm and am now
looking at it this afternoon in the middle of the large puddle with some
Mallards and shorebirds about 150m from either road.

If still searching for this rarity, it is worth looking with a telescope from
both roads. If it is not here, it might be worth looking at Leamington Marina
or in the area around Pelee Wings Nature Store on Point Pelee Dr. as Mike
Malone, the owner of Pelee Wings mentioned that he has heard and/or seen it
from there a few times about a week ago.

All the best,
Jeremy Bensette

[Ontbirds] Black-bellied Whistling-Duck at Leamington Marina

2019-07-31 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
The Black-bellied Whistling-Duck is at Leamington Marina again for the first
time since it was first found here. It is up close by the black fence near the
playground, in the same location it was the other day when Victor Serrano found
it here. Leamington Marina is on Robson Rd, a few hundred metres east of Erie
St. in Leamington, Essex County.

I am quite sure it is the same bird as the one seen regularly north of Hillman
Marsh lately, as the two times it was at the marina are two of the only dates
that it was not seen north of Hillman Marsh since Dean Ware originally found it
there.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Black-bellied Whistling Ducks - Wheatley, Essex County

2019-06-18 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
There are currently 9 Black-bellied Whistling Ducks (apparently found earlier
today by Tim Dawson as per a photo posted to Facebook - thank you!!) at Muddy
Creek in Wheatley, Essex County, across Deer Run Rd from Cavendish Factory a
couple kilometres south of Wheatley. I just saw them. Please do not get out of
cars to prevent flushing them, and be mindful of busy traffic on this curve of
Deer Run Rd. Good birding!

[Ontbirds] OFO Trip Summary - Point Pelee area - April 6, 2019

2019-04-09 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
This past Saturday, April 6 2019, twelve birders from across southwestern
Ontario joined me for a very successful full-day outing in the Point Pelee
area! We totalled 70 bird species between 7:30 am and about 5 pm in very
comfortable sunny weather. Such nice weather that I now have a sun burn! I
appreciate the great turnout, especially to those who came from a few hours
away for the outing. Below is a summary of the day.

We started at 7:30 am at Mersea Park at the intersection of Point Pelee Drive
and Mersea Rd C where we spotted a small assortment of diving ducks and Horned
Grebes on Lake Erie. eBird checklist link for Mersea Park and Point Pelee Drive:
https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S54701251

We then ventured into Point Pelee National Park, stopping at a couple patches
of savannah habitat in the park to enjoy a few Eastern Bluebirds, singing Field
Sparrows and Carolina Wrens, and a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. At The Tip we
studied thousands of diving ducks including great views of Surf and
White-winged Scoters. From there we stopped briefly at the DeLaurier Homestead
parking area and then walked the Boardwalk that had been partially rebuilt this
spring. eBird checklist link for Point Pelee National Park:
https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S54696567

After lunch we made our way to Hillman Marsh Conservation Area where we built
up quite the list of dabbling ducks as well as Pectoral Sandpipers, Dunlin, and
a Forster’s Tern. eBird checklist link for Hillman Marsh:
https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S54701175

If anyone who came along would like a copy of the group photo from the
beginning of the day please contact me privately. Again, thanks so much to
everyone who came out. You all added to a great day, and I look forward to
crossing paths with you again this spring!

[Ontbirds] Info for OFO trip tomorrow at Point Pelee

2019-04-05 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi there,

I would like to add a bit of detail for tomorrow’s OFO trip that I will be
leading in the Point Pelee area near Leamington, Essex County. It is labelled a
birding photography trip, but I want to make it clear that any birders are
welcome to come along, camera or not. We will focus a bit more on photography
than typical OFO trips but it will also be a great opportunity for high quality
birding.

As posted on the OFO website, the plan is to meet at 7:30 am tomorrow (April 6,
2019) in the large square parking area of Mersea Park on Point Pelee Drive near
Mersea Rd C. In case anyone wishes to join the group a bit later than that we
will spend some time at The Tip of Point Pelee National Park first, then
eventually visit the Marsh Boardwalk and/or another trail if there is enough
time before lunch. If there is enough interest from the group we will likely
continue into the afternoon. The weather is forecast to be pretty comfortable
tomorrow! Please remember that The Tip of Point Pelee is often windier than the
local weather forecast suggests, so I suggest bringing a bit warmer clothing
just in case.

Tomorrow will be a lot of fun no doubt, and I look forward to seeing you there!

Re: [Ontbirds] Mew Gull - Essex-Windsor Regional Landfill

2019-03-14 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Sorry for another email, but this is a pretty serious rarity in Ontario and a
bunch of birders did not get to see it this afternoon. Since my last email the
Mew Gull has flown out of sight with most of the Ring-billed Gulls it was with.
It is also now pretty dark out so they likely went to roost on the open lake. I
am pretty confident that it will be back at the landfill tomorrow.

The Mew Gull stood out well (adult non-breeding plumage) among the hundreds of
Ring-billed Gulls for its darker mantle, very thick white tertial crescent, and
streaked head vs the clean white heads of virtually all the Ring-billed Gulls
it was with, both at the fields across the road from the Essex County Regional
Landfill and at Cedar Beach Conservation Area.

These will be locations worth checking tomorrow if searching for the Mew Gull,
especially at the fields across the road from the landfill (County Rd 18
between Coulter Rd and McCormick Rd) during business hours, and at Cedar Beach
CA (Heritage Rd, aka County Rd 50, west of Kingsville at the mouth of Cedar
Creek) in the early morning and evening.

Please be careful if searching along County Rd 18 (consider searching from
McCormick Rd where we saw it closest for a brief time), and if stopping for
long on its shoulder try to pull over as far as possible without going into the
ditch, as this can be a very busy road. Also, please try to position all cars
and tripods/birders on the same side of the road. The last thing we want is a
crash, injury, or police intervention over poor maneuvering while birding.
Birding inside this landfill is not an option.

Great find, Jeremy Hatt!! I mean this in the best way possible when I say that
you’re on fire at the dump this year!

Good birding,

Re: [Ontbirds] Slaty-backed Gull at Landfill in Essex County

2019-01-15 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi there,

The Slaty-backed Gull found earlier today by Jeremy Hatt was present in the
same field for a good portion of the afternoon today with short breaks when it
would fly around or hide behind other gulls. It disappeared when most of the
gulls few into the landfill at around 15:55 and came back out at 16:40 when it
and most of the other gulls flew overhead toward Lake Erie to roost for the
night. Hopefully it will return to this location in days to come.

Directions: the Windsor-Essex Landfill (not officially named on Google Maps) is
on County Rd 18 between Coulter Rd and McCormick Rd in Essex County. The
landfill itself is not open to the public whatsoever, but the gulls spend much
of their time sitting in a field across the road from the landfill. GPS
coordinates of the approximate location where many gulls can often be found:
42.0863192, -82.8628390

Great find Jeremy Hatt, and good birding!

[Ontbirds] Niagara Falls OFO trip summary - December 2, 2018

2018-12-03 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi Ontario birders,

Yesterday was another great time at the annual OFO Niagara Falls Gulls trip! We
did not take an exact count of attendees, but we estimate that this event was
attended by approximately 100 birders. This was a bit less than last year,
likely due to the rainy weather forecast for Sunday morning. That rainy weather
ceased before we started, and the sun even came out for a good portion of the
day! Eight species of gulls were identified by the group, despite high
temperatures and high water level above the falls.

We started the day at 9 am at Sir Adam Beck Generating Station, where we
enjoyed at least two Iceland Gulls and a Great Black-backed Gull among many
Herring and Ring-billed Gulls. We also saw an adult Little Gull among a flock
of Bonaparte's Gulls at the Roosting Rocks a few hundred metres up river. We
stopped briefly at the Whirlpool, where we watched a flock of a few hundred
Bonaparte's Gulls resting and a Red-tailed Hawk perched on a very low branch,
seemingly watching the turbulent river.

By late morning most of the group made it to the Upper Falls viewing area,
where we were granted views of an immature Glaucous Gull, a probable hybrid
Glaucous x Herring Gull, a couple more Iceland Gulls, multiple Lesser
Black-backed Gulls of various ages, and many Great Black-backed Gulls. Non-gull
highlights above the falls included as many as three Harlequin Ducks and two
Dunlin perched between the rapids above the falls, a local breeding pair of
Peregrines occupying a high ledge overlooking downtown Niagara Falls, and a
Black-crowned Night Heron perched very close to the driveway in Dufferin
Islands Park.

We did not visit the Queenston boat launch area as a group this year because of
the high volume of boaters using that area lately, but many individuals who did
check out this spot were rewarded with a few Little Gulls. Also, it was
reported that 7 Little Gulls flew by with around 1400 Bonaparte's Gulls at the
mouth of the Niagara River at Niagara-on-the-Lake around sunset.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in this fun and social birding
event, especially Justin Peter and Mark Peck for Saturday's ID workshop, and
the various great people who helped with organizing the weekend. Have a great
winter birding season!

Trip leaders Marcie Jacklin, Josh Vandermeulen, and Jeremy Bensette

[Ontbirds] Townsend's Solitaire - Point Pelee National Park in Essex County

2018-11-04 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi there,

This morning Pat Schiller and I crossed paths with Tom Morrison, a local
photographer, who had seen and photographed a Townsend's Solitaire earlier
today in the bushes in front of the entrance to the Visitor Centre in Point
Pelee National Park near Leamington (about 10 min drive to entrance and another
10 mins to the Visitor Centre, SE end of Point Pelee Dr., admission or pass
required).

Wow! This is very likely the same individual bird that spent much of last
winter in that exact location, though I am sure it must have spent the warmer
months somewhere else. Great find Tom! We did not refind it in a quick search,
but I would be very surprised if it is not seen again.

Good birding!

Re: [Ontbirds] Great Kiskadee @ Rondeau Provincial Park

2018-09-08 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
The Great Kiskadee just made another very generous appearance, flying up and
over the Marsh Trail where it perched atop a willow tree for about a minute
before returning to the spot where it apparently roosted last night. This is
within minutes of when it disappeared last night.

The location it seems to roost at is (42.3132736,-81.8523388) and the location
it spent most of today is (42.3112602,-81.8526252). These are two gps
coordinate locations near the start of the Marsh Trail of Rondeau Provincial
Park in Chatham-Kent County. There is a gravel parking lot near a hunting
registration cabin on Water St. Walk a couple hundred metres on Marsh Trail to
get close to the above gps coordinates.

Super good mega highlight birding!
Jere - Leamington, ON

Ps, The Tip of Point Pelee is just crawling with roosting Monarchs when the
conditions are so windy like this!

Lots of warblers and other passerines here to keep you busy while waiting for

[Ontbirds] Purple Gallinule - Kingsville, Essex County

2018-08-18 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Early this morning Brad Ouellette found a Purple Gallinule at John R. Park
Homestead Conservation Area, and after some time searching we have just refound
it!! It is currently resting out of sight around a bend in stream that flows in
toward County Rd 50 at the east edge of this conservation area but has walked
in and out of sight a few times.

Location: John R Park Homestead can be found by searching Google Maps, and is
on County Rd 50 between Kingsville and Harrow in Essex County. If you park in
the gravel parking lot up against a flower garden, walk to County Rd 50 and
turn right. There is a bridge over the road, and the bird is less than 100m
south of Rd 50 (toward the lake). Viewing is difficult and will require
patience. The bird was resting for a while out of sight, then came back into
view and foraged before flying across the creek, where it was still viewable
but tricky. Hopefully that makes enough sense! The approximate GPS coordinate
of the bird is (41.9966, -82.8485), which is in the middle of a small marsh. Do
not plan to walk to this exact coordinate - it is where the bird last was and a
good direction to look from the road.

Sorry if this has already been posted. My phone isn't working well with emails
lately.

Good luck and super awesome good birding!

[Ontbirds] Common Teal - Hillman Marsh (Leamington)

2018-03-22 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
I just spotted a male Common Teal in the shorebird cell while birding with Kate
Derbyshire at Hillman Marsh CA!! It does not show any signs of
intergradation/hybridization with our "American" Green-winged Teal.

The entrance to Hillman Marsh CA is on Mersea Rd 2 near the intersection with
Mersea Rd 19. The shorebird cell is unfortunately by accessible for the next
couple of hours because there is a prescribed burn starting now next to the
trail that leads to the shorebird cell. It will be open again in a couple of
hours (we all had to leave the trails as well of course).

Super stoked; this is the first clear cut Common Teal I've ever found in
Ontario!!

Good birding,
Jere

[Ontbirds] My 2017 Big Year - summary and one more thank you

2018-01-05 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Happy New Year, Ontario birding community!

Somehow I made it through the whole year without posting a single email
specifically about my Big Year to Ontbirds... So here goes! I am not posting
about a specific current bird sighting, but rather more of a wrap-up of a
birding event, so to speak.

The year 2017 was a pretty "big" and wild year for me birding-wise, as many of
you already know. I committed to doing an all-out Big Year in our beautiful
province of Ontario, and held onto that goal right until dark on the last day
of the year. I have written a pretty long blog post, which I will include a
link to in this email. I will say here that my final 2017 year list sits at 346
bird species, nearly unbelievably breaking Ontario's 2012 record of 343.

I want to thank our whole birding community one more time for your support in
this magical journey. I am so grateful for anyone who considers me a friend,
and I am especially thankful to Tim Arthur, Josh Vandermeulen, Sarah Lamond,
and Bruce DiLabio, some of the coolest and best friends a young and *almost*
hip birder could ask for! I owe each of you and a number of others a few meals
or something! Special congratulations are in order for Tim, a great friend who
drinks from the font of youth and stuck through the madness of overnight
drives, brutal weather, and long days for a total of 329 species himself! Josh
was unconditionally supportive toward this quest of mine in many ways including
handing Ontario's Big Year record on to me when I passed his 343 in late
November, and standing in his wedding this fall was a very special honour.
Sarah gave up so much of her time through the year for great company while
providing very high quality birding support, and we managed to scoop up a bunch
of pretty awesome zingers together! Bruce was so supportive with birding and
non-birding related talks and advice as a mentor and friend, and was also
paramount in my ability to track down some seriously unusual and rare birds!
These are by no means the only people I want to personally thank, but this
email can only be so long, and those people are without question my team’s MVPs.

For those reading who do not know him, Alan Wormington was a great friend and
mentor, and though he may not be with us today, he is a big part of why I did
this at all. Alan is in many of our hearts and I know that we are always in
his, and friends of his can probably understand when I say that I wish he was
around so I could rub it in that I have a bigger year than his best! Haha, but
really, so much of this is for Alan. I miss him as much as I did a year ago,
and I wore a colourful 'lucky' belt of his every single day of 2017.

If anyone is wondering what comes next, I plan on enjoying some normal life and
'normal' birding for the first time in many months, and I look forward to
drumming up support for conservation and community among birders to see if we
can really add to the social momentum that birding and conservation seem to be
gaining lately. I also plan on continuing toward a sustainable career in tour
guiding and field biology work within Ontario right in the thick of this
wonderful birding and conservation community! Please, if you see me out and
about and want to chat, feel very welcome to do so. Like I have said before,
much of the last year was a tired and/or hyped up blur, so please do not take
it personally if I do not recall us meeting or cannot remember names. I promise
I appreciate you all and want to show it as much as I can.

So here is the link to my blog about highlights, lowlights, feelings, and
dynamics of the past year. I hope you enjoy, and stay tuned throughout this
year for more about last year's crazy adventures!

http://jeremybirder.blogspot.ca/2018/01/my-2017-ontario-big-year-summary-and.html

Thanks again and I wish you all the best. Happy winter and happy New Year, and
I look forward to seeing many of you here at Point Pelee area in May!!

Re: [Ontbirds] Northern Gannet, Van Wagner's Beach in Hamilton

2017-11-20 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
The Northern Gannet sat on the water until dark today in the location described
by Cheryl and Richard!

We got it!!! This breaks Ontario's big year record set in 2012 by Josh
Vandermeulen, and it was so great to have three of the four people I mentioned,
plus a number of other great friends present for this unbelievable milestone.
Pinch me please! I will keep this short but I can't help but thank everyone

Re: [Ontbirds] Mountain Bluebird (Waterloo)

2017-11-19 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi Ontario birding community,

I would like to report that the Mountain Bluebird found yesterday is still
being seen at Snyder's Flats in Waterloo. It has been hanging out within 100m
of Snyder's Flats Rd, about 50m before the last parking area all day today
around the same spot it had been found yesterday. It has been flying from tree
to tree and frequently perches on the highest tips of bushes and trees,
crossing the road regularly. It seems to want to be on both sides of the road,
back and forth, forever. Let's hope it sticks around for at least a few days so
people can see it when the weather is not so poor!

Snyder's Flats Rd is off of Sawmill Rd at the northeast corner of Waterloo.

Big year stuff below... This might get a bit mushy...

This Mountain Bluebird marks a lifetime birding highlight for me... This is the
343rd bird species I have seen this year in our great beautiful province of
Ontario, and therefore this sighting ties with Ontario's Big Year record, set
in 2012 by Josh Vandermeulen.

I want to make special note to thank Josh, one of my best friends, for being so
unwaveringly supportive of this crazy journey. Josh has been so helpful and
positive throughout this year and has been by far one of the greatest
influences in my birding career. Thanks so much Josh for everything you do for
me. I also want to take this opportunity to especially thank Tim Arthur, Sarah
Lamond, and Bruce DiLabio for unconditional support, positivity, good company,
and close friendship throughout this crazy year. These four, among many others
(you know who you are but I will do my best to personally thank each of you)
are some of the best friends I could ever ask for. There are also countless
others who have supported and pushed me along to make this accomplishment
possible. I am generally so appreciative for the support of all of my family,
friends near and far, clubs like OFO and ECFNC, and the gang at Vortex Canada
for collectively pushing me, rooting for me, and generally supporting me. This
is something I could never have achieved alone and as cheesy as this email may
read, I am really so grateful for all of you from the bottom of my heart. I
cannot finish this email without thanking Alan Wormington. I would not be half
the birder I am today if not for Alan being such a big part of my life.

Again, thanks so much everyone for everything you've done to help along with
this team accomplishment. I will not slow down until 2017 has finished, and I
wish you all the best luck this fall and winter.

Jere

[Ontbirds] Eurasian Tree Sparrow - Wawa

2017-11-06 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi there,

This afternoon Owen Yates and I saw the previously reported Eurasian Tree
Sparrow in Wawa. It spent much of the late afternoon at and around the bird
feeders and yard at 2 Caverhill St. in Wawa, Algoma District, which is across
the street from the waterfront of Wawa Lake.

If you are considering chasing this bird, the homeowners (the lady's name is
Gail, and they were the original finders of this bird) ask that if anyone wants
to go into their yard to please knock on the door and ask permission first.
Like I said, if they are not home or if you do not feel like asking to go into
the garden, it should be readily viewable from the road, sitting in one of the
many trees and bushes around the small residential yard.

Big year update below for those who have been asking or wondering.

Good birding!
Jere

Jeremy Bensette - Leamington, ON
I'm doing an Ontario Big Year in 2017!
This sideburned sparrow makes 340!!

Here is a Big Year update (November 6, 2017):

The last week or so of birding has been... magical!?! This is without doubt
thanks especially to the constant outpouring of support by so many members of
our great birding community. My Ontario year list is now 340 bird species! My
recent additions to my year list are in the next paragraph.

Tim and I found a Cave Swallow (#334) near The Tip of Point Pelee last Saturday
October 28, Golden Eagle (#335) while driving toward Hawk Cliff on Sunday
October 29, then I drove to Ottawa with Tim on Tuesday October 31 just in time
to be the first birders on scene to see Bruce DiLabio's Razorbill (#336), which
ended up being one of two different individual Razorbills on the Ottawa River
last week (evident by comparing our photos of the first Razorbill with others'
photos of the second). We quickly moved on to catch up with a Red Phalarope
(#337) before sunset, then two days later on Thursday November 2 Bruce found a
Black-throated Gray Warbler (#338) for us at Britannia Park Ridge while we were
at... Britannia Park Pier! We arrived in about four minutes and with the help
of a number of locals we got our eyes on this rarity in short order. Two days
later, Saturday November 4, we were back in Hamilton looking at a Black-legged
Kittiwake (#339)! This brings me to today's Eurasian Tree Sparrow (#340)
sighting with Owen.

Likely species still include Purple Sandpiper, Gyrfalcon, Spotted Towhee,
Pink-footed Goose, Mountain Bluebird, Yellow-throated Warbler, among many other
rarities that have potential of showing up in November or December. Please, if
you hear of any hummingbirds repeatedly visiting feeders, any flycatcher
besides Eastern Phoebe, any seabird other than jaegers or Razorbill, any one of
California, Mew, Ivory, or Ross's Gull, Gray-crowned Rosy-finch, or anything
else very rare, I would greatly appreciate hearing about it.

I want to send my sincerest thanks to so many great and generous friends for
all of your support through this year. I am so proud to be part of such an
amazing community of birders and naturalists here in Ontario. I apologize to
anyone whose messages and emails I have not replied to promptly, and I hope it
is understandable with the amount of time I spend driving and birding this
year. The year may not be over yet but it is getting closer!

All the best in your birding this fall and winter!

Jere

The Razorbill is still present! We are currently looking at it from the beach
about a few hundred metres north of the beach parking lot behind The Point
restaurant that Bruce described in his email below. It is swimming south along

is now a ways out offshore but was less than 100m away when we arrived.

Ridiculously good birding!

[Ontbirds] Cave Swallow and Pacific Loon - Point Pelee

2017-10-28 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi Ontario birding community,

Around lunch time today Tim Arthur and I found a Pacific Loon
(immature/nonbreeding type) flying south past The Tip at least a few hundred
metres east of us, and naturally it kept heading south. About half an hour
later we found a Cave Swallow flying around erratically, attempting to hunt
over the east beach very close to The Tip. Our time with this rarity was
swiftly cut short when a Merlin dropped in and nearly snatched it.
Unfortunately we have not seen either of these birds again. The Pacific Loon is
likely long gone across the lake but the Cave Swallow is almost surely still
around.

Point Pelee National Park is at the end of Point Pelee Dr. southeast of
Leamington in Essex County. The Tip is at the southernmost end of the road that
goes through Point Pelee, about 8.5km south of the park entrance.

Good birding!
Jere

Jeremy Bensette - Leamington, ON
I'm doing an Ontario Big Year in 2017!
Misfortunate Cave Swallow is 334!!

Big Year notes:

My 2017 Ontario year list total sits at 334 bird species, just 9 short of the
current record of 343, set in 2012 by my good friend Josh Vandermeulen. I have
seen every expected common or uncommon species including all of Ontario's
breeding owls, songbirds, woodpeckers, grouse, etc. and am now in search of a
very limited list of species.

The remaining somewhat likely species I am in search for this fall season
include Black-legged Kittiwake, Purple Sandpiper, Red Phalarope, Gyrfalcon,
Pink-footed Goose (or Barnacle or Bean Goose I guess), Common Eider, Smew,
Mountain Bluebird, Yellow-throated Warbler, Black-throated Gray Warbler, Say's
Phoebe, Eurasian Tree Sparrow, or any other fairly notable rarities. Gull
species that are worth crossing my fingers for include California, Laughing,
Mew, Ross's, and Ivory, though some of these are very tricky identifications so
if possible I would feel much more comfortable driving very far after seeing
photos. I would appreciate info as soon as possible on any hummingbird
whatsoever between now and the end of the year, hopefully with photos too.
Naturally I subscribe to many ebird alerts and other bird alert services within
our province, so I ask that people refrain from contacting me about species
that are already being posted to alerts.

Thanks so much in advance for any information, and I give my sincerest thanks
again to anyone who has given me a hand this year. I especially want to
recognize Tim Arthur for being a great travel companion for an unmentionable
number of kilometres, for keeping me focused on what's important through
difficult situations, and for being a great friend in general. This huge quest
is a team effort, and I could not have possibly done so well up to this point
if it was not for the support of so many great people and great friends.

I apologize if I do not reply promptly to anyone who contacts me. It will be a
pretty crazy couple months of driving and birding, but I will continue to try
to get back to anyone who reaches out as soon as I am able to. I hope everyone
is having a great fall season, and thanks again for being so supportive. It is
beyond humbling to feel like I have extended family anywhere I go in our vast
beautiful province.

Nine very hardcore weeks left, and nine species to go!

Jere

Re: [Ontbirds] Pacific Loons, Short-eared Owl, Little Gull, Common Loons - Minet's Point Park, Barrie

2017-10-06 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi folks,

I know it's been posted already yesterday and today, but might as well up the
ante a bit with sightings in the last couple of hours.

In a single right to left sweep counting loons one-by-one as distant as
possible, we counted exactly 1776 Common Loons and 3 Pacific Loons (all spaced
at least a kilometre apart, no loons noted flying, all in more or less breeding
plumage). In the process of loon-viewing I spotted a migrant Short-eared Owl
being harassed by gulls, as well as the adult Little Gull already mentioned
earlier.

Needless to say, this was a pretty great highlight birding stop, even in a
pretty big year! It would certainly be a worthwhile stop for anyone in the
area.

Minet's Point Park is at the south edge of Kempenfelt Bay in Barrie, Simcoe
County.

Gps coordinates for Minet's Point Park:
44.37617, -79.66743

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Western Sandpiper, Hudsonian Godwit at Windermere in Hamilton

2017-10-06 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi there,

If anyone is still interested in either of these species in Hamilton this year,
there are a Western Sandpiper and a Hudsonian Godwit present this morning at
Windermere Basin in Hamilton.

As I wrote this email, the Hudsonian Godwit (found yesterday by Mourad Jabra)
apparently flew 'away,' over the trees and at least a couple km until out of
sight, though this seems to be standard for recent visiting godwits, so
hopefully it returns. The Western Sandpiper (probably the same one found by
James Lees in late September, same plumage details) is still present but moving
around regularly. The lighting conditions for viewing are perfect here today
with the overcast, though a telescope is still of course needed to see much.

Windermere Basin can be viewed via a gravel trail from the Windermere Basin
parking lot on Eastport Drive, slightly East of the Burlington Skyway in
Hamilton.

Good luck and good birding!

Re: [Ontbirds] Western Sandpiper - Tollgate Ponds - Hamilton

2017-09-30 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi there,

Sarah Lamond and I refound the Western Sandpiper tonight just before sunset
along the inside of the north edge berm of Tollgate Ponds, roughly in the same
spot that many of us saw it earlier today. It was moving around and actively
feeding between the rocks at the edge of the pond until it was too dim to see.
I think there is a fair chance that it and the other shorebirds present will be
here again in the morning.

As Rich mentioned earlier, Tollgate Ponds can be viewed with a telescope from
Eastport Dr., slightly north of the skyway bridge, in Hamilton.

Good birding!

Re: [Ontbirds] Eurasian Collared-Dove at Rondeau PP

2017-09-24 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
The Eurasian Collared-Dove that Jim and Keith Burk found in Rondeau Park
earlier was still present when I left about 20 minutes ago. It had just flown
out of sight but from what I hear it has done that a few times already today,
always returning to approximately the same spot.

It's been hanging out on hydro lines and in trees between the dog beach and
house number 17108 Lakeshore Rd, slightly south of the Visitor Centre in
Rondeau Park near Blenheim, Kent County.

A big thank you to Jim and Keith, and Steve too of course, for getting me on it

Re: [Ontbirds] Glossy Ibis Harrow Lagoons

2017-09-03 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
I would like to add to the postings about the Ibis at Harrow for anyone curious
about this bird's identity. I have not been to see this bird myself but based
on photos from two friends, this bird is readily identifiable as a Glossy Ibis
due to the pale whitish colouration of skin around the edge of its facial skin.
This is a trait that, from what I gather, does not always show on very young
Glossy Ibis, but when it does, as with this one, it is a pretty clear sign of
this species. White-faced Ibis only show this white edge to the facial skin as
breeding plumage adults, and even then it is actually made up of whitish
feathers rather than skin colour. Not to be confused with the more vertical
white streak in head feathering above the eye, seen on juvenal individuals of
both Plegadis genus species.

Location: Harrow Sewage Lagoons are found on Concession 3 in Harrow, Essex
County, about 1km west of County Rd 11.

Again, I have not seen this bird but have noticed it has not yet been publicly
announced as a Glossy Ibis, in case that makes a difference for those
interested in chasing it. Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Glossy Ibis - West Perth Wetland

2017-08-29 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
If anyone is interested in specifics, the ibis that we chased earlier today at
the West Perth Wetland (Mitchell Sewage Lagoon) is in fact a Glossy Ibis. It
has very young feather plumage but shows a pale bluish white edge of the
visible skin on its face.

Directions as per Dave Brown: Stratford heading west to first lights in
Mitchell (Wellington St) and turn left (south) and continue till you hit the
"T" intersection at the ball diamond. Lagoon cells are straight back behind
the ball diamond and soccer fields and the sewage treatment plant. You can go
straight ahead on the gravel and park next to the berm.

[Ontbirds] Marbled Godwit - Point Pelee Marsh

2017-08-15 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi there!

Sarah Lamond and I found a Marbled Godwit on a grassy/muddy island in the Point
Pelee marsh (kayak/canoe needed) this afternoon. It was on the small spongey
mud islands along the north edge of Lake Pond. It was present for the hour or
so that we were in Lake Pond and there is a decent chance it's there tomorrow
too.

Aside from this Marbled Godwit we also noted a number of Pectoral, Spotted,
Semipalmated, and Least Sandpipers, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Short-billed
Dowitchers, and of course many Killdeer. There have been quite a few shorebirds
out there for the last couple of weeks already with many apparently sticking
around for days like they do, so this email is in part a reminder of this
option for some productive and unconventional birding.

Point Pelee National Park is at the end of Point Pelee Dr. southeast of
Leamington in Essex County. To access Lake Pond, launch a kayak or canoe at the
Marsh Boardwalk and follow the channel out and around the huge ring of lotus
plants until you reach the large open water that is Lake Pond. The muddy
islands I described above are along the north edge of this pond.

Also if interested in looking for more shorebirds in this marsh, there is a
channel at the NW corner of Lake Pond that leads to West Cranberry Pond, where
there are a bunch of small patches of shorebird habitat. We did not make it to
this pond today.

I hope this Marbled Godwit is a sign of Hudsonian Godwits to come!

Good birding,
Jere

[Ontbirds] Black-headed Gull - Leamington

2017-07-11 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi there,

I just found a Black-headed Gull in first summer plumage among a flock of a few
hundred gulls resting behind the "no trespassing" fence at the end of the
driveway and pier for the ferry in Leamington. This is likely the same
individual found by Jeremy Hatt in Wheatley last week. If searching for it, its
brown coloured head and larger size vs the Bonaparte's Gulls are very apparent
in the bright sun, and viewing quality is pretty good through said fence.

The ferry dock is at the south end of Erie St. in Leamington, Essex County.

Good birding!

Jeremy

Ps, I would be very appreciative if someone would trade me a Laughing Gull for
this Black-headed Gull! I was too busy with field work to catch up with the
mostly one-day-wonder Laughing Gulls :( Thank you!

Re: [Ontbirds] Scissor-tailed Flycatcher - Marie Curtis Park

2017-06-25 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi there,

Since it hasn't been posted in a number of hours, the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher
is still present and putting on a show as of 8pm. It has perched low from time
to time for 5-15 mins but comes back out regularly. Hopefully it stays a while!
Directions below in Dave's email.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Yellow-crowned Night-Heron - Brockville

2017-06-17 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi Ontario birders,

I apologize for my delay in posting. I was so tired last night after Brockville
that I needed to make my way through Toronto as soon as possible. I aimed to
write this email then get some sleep when I did eventually stop, and by the
time I woke up this morning I knew I had accomplished one of those two things.

Last night (June 16) at 8:40 pm I spotted the Brockville area Yellow-crowned
Night-Heron flying low in a southward direction toward the nearby town of
Tincap. It disappeared into some trees (around 44.6261, -75.7578) shortly after
I got my binoculars on it. This location is less than 2km west of the spot it
was seen yesterday at Mac Johnson Wildlife Area, and about 1km straight north
from the centre of Tincap.

I saw the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron from Airport Rd. next to Tincap Golf Club.
The town of Tincap is northwest of Brockville along County Rd 29.

Good luck to anyone looking for it! Hopefully it gets comfortable at one
viewable location. Good birding!

Jeremy

[Ontbirds] Violet-green Swallow - Thunder Bay

2017-06-14 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi Ontario birders,

Josh and I are currently looking at the female Violet-green Swallow at Thunder
Bay Marina with Glenn Stronks. She is present and beautifully on display and
getting a bit frisky with her male Tree Swallow companion, who is defending
their nest box from other Tree Swallows!

This Violet-green Swallow is being seen at the Thunder Bay marina. Turn right
on gravel road under construction, there is a gate but it's usually open. Small
pond on right hand (north) side of road. She is clearly occupying the first
nest box that runs along the east side of the pond.

[Ontbirds] Yellow-crowned Night-Heron - Newcastle

2017-06-07 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi there,

This is not an update as to whether the YCNH has returned or not, but I would
like to extend a request and suggestion to those searching for it.

Please try to search for this bird only from cars on the road in front of the
houses it has been seen at. I am well aware that this is usually not the case
with Yellow-crowned Night-Herons, but if it's not being seen easily why not try
to eliminate reasons it would be inclined to fly away?

For the most part it seems that any time this bird was seen it was when very
few people were present and looking for/at it. The homeowners and birder(s) who
photographed it did so from a considerable distance and with at least some
cover between them and the bird. When I was there the evening after it had been
first reported, a number of us walked back and forth between the two houses
it's known to visit, never seeing it. Like I said this is normally perfect for
viewing this species in this type of situation, but as of now at least it is
not working. Let's see if we can get that fellow to stick around there for
weeks so that we birders as well as the very pleased and generous pond owners
can continue to enjoy it! If taking extra care does not change things for
viewing this bird, we haven't lost anything by trying.

Directions as per Geoff Carpentier: The YCNH is visible right now at 3147
Morgans Rd. Newcastle. Exit 401 at
hwy 115/35 and go north to conc 3 then east to Morgans
Rd. Then north to
property. Pond is set back from road on east side. Do not enter property
pls. It was also present in a small wetland beside house 3095 on a previous
date.

Good birding!

Ps, to my very supportive friends and fans (thanks so much for the support so
far!) of this Ontario Big Year who have been asking about progress, blog and
facebook inactivity, etc., I am indeed still going strong! Between driving,
birding, changes in social life, the odd night's sleep, etc., I have found next
to no time for internet in the last couple of months. I am currently sitting
very close to the 300 species mark, and although that could be better, I am at
a very good pace for rarities which is most important and am very pleased with
how the birding is going! Good birding to all, and I look forward to seeing you
around somewhere in Ontario!

[Ontbirds] Fish Crow - Point Pelee Visitor Centre

2017-04-30 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Tim Arthur and I just found a Fish Crow eating a Jolly Rancher (it smelled like
watermelon flavour) in the parking lot of the visitor centre. It was silent at
first and we noted its tiny size as it stood next to Red-winged Blackbirds,
bluish sheen on its back, and regularly ruffled its throat feathers in a
Raven-like manner. It eventually flew for a few seconds and called a few times
like a Fish Crow.

Point Pelee Visitor Centre parking lot is located 3km from the end of Point
Pelee Dr., the road that leads to and goes into Point Pelee (southeast of
Leamington in Essex County).

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Stilt Sandpiper, American Avocets, Willets at Hillman Marsh in Leamington

2017-04-29 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Tonight just before sunset Richard Carr and I found 23 American Avocets and 6
Willets, then after Richard left I watched two more groups of Willets join the
six for a total of 90 Willets. I then found a Stilt Sandpiper hanging with a
Lesser Yellowlegs near the larger shorebirds. There were also at least 10
Pectoral Sandpipers and a few hundred Dunlin present. These shorebirds were all
in the shorebird cell of Hillman Marsh on Mersea Rd 2, about 6 km east of
Leamington in Essex County.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Ruff - Bruce-Grey Line (Grey County)

The male Ruff is present this morning in the same fields described yesterday.
It's been shifting between the three fields closest east to the bridge directly
south of the intersection of Grey-Bruce Line and Sideroad 1 near Chatsworth in
Grey County. It has been pretty distant in a field all morning and very tough
to spot without a telescope.

Re: [Ontbirds] Little Blue Herons - Sparta

2017-04-19 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Tim Arthur and I just saw the two Little Blue Herons flying over Corner's
Corner public natural area in Sparta, Elgin County! They were rather high
compared to yesterday - maybe 100m - coming in from the north, circled once or
twice, even looking like they were considering landing in the trees near the
noisy roosting crows, then circled one more time and continued flying south
until we couldn't see them anymore. It's apparent that this pair has somewhat
of a habit of making at least very brief daily visits to this location. Some
patience is required - we have been here since after lunch time. See below for
address. From what we gather, this is the only location that they have been
seen at.

Good birding and good luck to anyone trying to see them!

[Ontbirds] Eurasian Tree Sparrow - Port Elgin

2017-04-04 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Hi friends,

If you are not yet aware, a Eurasian Tree Sparrow was photographed yesterday at
the Port Elgin Harbour and posted to eBird (not by me - I only saw the
checklist in the eBird alerts). Though very similar to House Sparrow, Eurasian
Tree Sparrow is a pretty incredibly rare species in Ontario and most of North
America. Naturally, I headed up here this morning with Tim Arthur and we've
been looking pretty hard in very difficult conditions: very rainy and slightly
above zero degrees.

We did not refind the Eurasian Tree Sparrow today but I strongly correlate that
outcome with the poor weather. We did not find any House Sparrows for that
matter, but it was clear that most of the birds in the area were very inactive
due to the weather. A couple of times we heard what sounded like a House/Tree
Sparrow in the distance and once a bird flew by at close range that somewhat
had the look of these old world sparrows. I think there is a very high chance
that this rarity is still present and can be refound.

Port Elgin is in Bruce County along the coast of Lake Huron between Goderich
and Southampton. If heading north along Highway 21 (Goderich St.), turn left on
Green St. and continue to the lake where you will see the harbour. There is a
construction site in the harbour with a large Willow tree and some medium size
maple-ish trees around the construction site, and from what I understand the
Eurasian Tree Sparrow was seen yesterday in one of these trees before being
flushed by sounds from the construction site.

I wish anyone interested in looking for this bird good luck - I think it will
be refound if people are looking for it!

[Ontbirds] Oregon Junco +1 - Point Pelee

2017-04-03 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
This afternoon I found a male 'Oregon' type Dark-eyed Junco AND a (probably
'Slate-colored' type) Dark-eyed Junco with white wing bars at the parking lot
of the Delaurier Trail in Point Pelee National Park. I have seen both of them
in the last hour, though it can be tricky refinding them with a few hundred
Dark-eyed Junco coming and going between numerous patches of grass and gravel.
Also present here are many Song Sparrows, an American Tree Sparrow, a couple
Field Sparrows, a couple Chipping Sparrows, and a Fox Sparrow. Point Pelee is
at the end of Point Pelee Dr., 5-10km southeast of Leamington in Essex County.

Good birding!

Re: [Ontbirds] probable Western Grebe Saddington Park Port Credit

2017-03-21 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
We refound this grebe about an hour ago and although it's at least 1km away I
am pretty confident that it's a Western Grebe due to the apparent amount of
blackish colour on its upper face. It was much too far for even remotely
identifiable photos or prolonged looks unfortunately, but it was readily
findable a handful of times when its head was up.

It was in a loose group of about 20 Red-necked Grebes around the border between
the lighter blue and darker blue water, almost directly in line with the fenced
off rock spit found by walking south from the parking lot of Saddington Park in
Port Credit. We walked about 100m past this spot and viewed from the tip of the
hill for a higher angle.

Good luck to anyone trying for it! There were a few birders there when we were
leaving and we gave them as detailed of directions as possible. See Barb's
instructions below for general directions. Hopefully it comes closer to shore
tonight or tomorrow!

Gull that he found this morning at Colchester Harbour near Harrow, Essex
County. A number of us arrived here a little while ago and are not seeing it
but are quite hopeful that it will return. There are quite a few gulls here.
One of us will post immediately if we see the Ivory Gull. Colchester is on Lake
Erie, south of Harrow in Essex County. Colchester Harbour is at the south end
of Jackson St in Colchester.

Apology if this has been posted already. I didn't receive an ontbirds email
about it and figured I should post.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Yellow-headed Blackbird - Comber, Essex County

2017-01-08 Thread Jeremy Bensette via ONTBIRDS
Kit McCann and I just headed out to Staples and Comber in search of blackbird
flocks at some grain storage areas - in hope of finding a flock to search
through for Yellow-headed Blackbird - and we were not disappointed!! We found a
massive flock of 5000-1 blackbirds, nearly all Brown-headed Cowbirds, and
after a bit of searching, Kit spotted a first-winter male Yellow-headed
Blackbird in flight! Eventually we found and photographed it on the ground too.

This massive flock of blackbirds can be found feeding from a massive rotting
(and terribly stinky) pile of corn in the front parking lot of the Agris site
just 5km north of Comber in Essex County. This yard is about 100m north of
Lakeshore 303 Rd, on Comber Sideroad (also labelled as Rd 35, a continuation of
Hwy 77).

Great spotting Kit!! You've made so much progress in your first year of
birding. Keep it up! This is a nice addition to the early days of my provincial
big year, as it means that I do not need to spend most of a day going out to
Lake St Clair during spring migration to see one on their breeding grounds.

Good birding!

Re: [Ontbirds] Smith's Longspur - Long Point

2017-01-01 Thread Jeremy Bensette
About 25 minutes ago the Smith's Longspur flew up and did a big lap around the
area it's been hanging out at before landing in a corn stubble field about 200m
south of Concession A Rd near Port Rowan in Norfolk County. There were still a
few people there when I left so hopefully someone can repost if it comes back
to the road.

Refer to Cheryl's directions below in the forwarded email.

Re: [Ontbirds] Crested Caracara - Wawa

2016-11-29 Thread Jeremy Bensette
Here is a second (and third) hand update regarding the Crested Caracara found
in Wawa yesterday. Like yesterday, I am not there myself and am simply posting
what the original finder has told me.

It was seen this morning in the same location (see my original email below)
that it was found in yesterday, eating more leftover food scraps. By mid
morning it apparently flew away from that location, and was seen shortly before
lunch in the yard of the Kiniwabi Pines restaurant, as well as along the
Michopicoten River, both in public viewing areas along Hwy 17 very close to the
previously mentioned off-limits MTO site.

I again have very little information to offer outside of the contents of this
email, as I am not there myself. The Crested Caracara is sounding rather
chaseable and I will be heading there with a car load of other southern Ontario
birders to look for it tomorrow. Anyone interested in seeing photos can find
them on the Ontario Birds Facebook group page, and I have shared Chris'
original post on my own page for anyone who is not in that group.

Good luck to anyone going for it, and good birding to all!

Jere

[Ontbirds] Crested Caracara - Wawa

2016-11-28 Thread Jeremy Bensette
Posting on behalf of Chris Eagles.

Before lunch today, Chris Eagles photographed a Crested Caracara in Wawa in the
east edge of Lake Superior and posted it to Facebook, unsure of its identity. I
figure it's worth posting to here for those who do not use Facebook. He has
seen it again this afternoon, and it was apparently eating fish scraps. He was
able to photograph it with his cell phone and it was about 20 feet away from
heavy machinery.

I am not in that area, but here are directions he described to me. Do note that
there is NO PUBLIC ACCESS to this area, but if it's moving around some it could
potentially be refound. He was here and found it because he works on this site.

It is mto property where I am working I spotted this bird in an mto pit
along highway 17 about 15 kms south of wawa at 11 am this morning this pit
will be closed as of the end of the week for the winter months. The closest
landmark would be the old woman bay rest area on Lake Superior.

Again, I have not observed this bird myself, so I do not have much else to tell
people about it. I just wanted to get the word out.

Re: [Ontbirds] Cobden Thick-billed Murre

2016-11-26 Thread Jeremy Bensette
The Thick-billed Murre was present as of around 11:30 when we left, and
presumably (likely) still present.

I noticed a number of birders viewing it from the boat dock area 'in town' in
Cobden as described yesterday, which is considerably further from the bird this
morning than the Summerfield Rd viewing spot as mentioned by Bruce. I strongly
suggest looking from the end of Summerfield Rd at the southeast corner of
Muskrat Lake. Summerfield Rd is about 1.5km east of the centre of Cobden,
Renfrew County. If on Hwy 17 heading south from Cobden, turn left on Foresters
Falls Rd then left again on Summerfield Rd.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Fwd: Cave Swallow - Point Pelee

2016-11-18 Thread Jeremy Bensette
Hi Ontario birders,

I've received a reply to my Cave Swallow email suggesting that my mention of
"The Tip parking lot" is confusing and asking me to clarify. There is a parking
lot about 400m north of The Tip at the extreme southern end of the road that
goes into Point Pelee, located about 3 km south of the Visitor Centre. For
anyone who has never visited the park in the late fall, winter, or early
spring, this length of road is open all day every day because the tram does not
operate at this time of the year.

All-in-all, The Tip parking lot is the closest parking lot to The Tip. It is
not the Visitor Centre parking lot or any other parking lot in the park. I hope
this is clear enough.

Thanks, and good birding in great weather!

Jeremy

Subject: [Ontbirds] Cave Swallow - Point Pelee

We just found a Cave Swallow flying south over Sparrow Field (at around 1330)
at Point Pelee! With the moderate south wind it's likely just flying over the
land somewhere between here and The Tip.

Also seen of interest today were two to three Cloudless Sulphur butterflies (at
11:30) in Sparrow Field, two Monarchs, and a large raft of various diving ducks
seen from The Tip parking lot. In the fields northeast of the park I noted a
number of Lapland Longspurs and American Pipits flying over with many Horned
Larks.

Point Pelee National Park's gate is approximately a ten minute drive southeast
from Leamington in Essex County, at the end of Point Pelee Dr. Sparrow Field is
about 1km north of The Tip, which is the southernmost point within the park.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Correction: Gyrfalcon - Hillman Marsh, Leamington

2016-11-16 Thread Jeremy Bensette
Hi there,

I'm writing to make a correction to my post a few days ago regarding a
Gyrfalcon at Hillman Marsh in Leamington. A number of highly regarded and
skilled northern birders agreed with our initial identification based on our
photos and account of the sighting - but after some skepticism, we sent the
photos to more birders for further scrutiny. After a thorough analysis it
seemed a better fit for a massive immature tundrius (the expected migrant
subspecies) Peregrine Falcon with rather heavier than average proportions and
markings.

The three of us are all very experienced with migrant Peregrines, and just this
fall I've watched many dozens of various size fly, hunt, and migrate for
prolonged periods of time, never looking close to as large or strong as this
individual. This seems to be without a doubt the largest, strongest, and most
impressive Peregrine I've ever seen. The apparent size, strength, and flight
style of this individual may have been exaggerated by the very strong wind
hitting it.

We apologize for any excitement and refinding efforts put forth by anyone who
was interested in our sighting. This has been a great lesson about the
potential extremes of Peregrine Falcons!

Good birding,

Jeremy, Amanda, and Lev

[Ontbirds] Cattle Egrets and pretty cool gulls - Wheatley

2016-11-04 Thread Jeremy Bensette
Late today there were two Cattle Egrets in a horse paddock at the intersection
of Deer Run Rd and Mersea Rd 21 between Leamington and Wheatley, in Essex
County.

There were also a few Lesser Black-backed Gulls (adult and 1st cycle) and an
interesting Herring-like Gull (adult, similar size and mantle colour to Herring
Gulls, light diffused grey primary tips with at least one long mirror on
longest primary, white iris, rich golden yellow bill with a bright red mark on
a very clean white blocky shaped head, and apparent yellowish pink legs seen
while it was swimming) at Wheatley Harbour up the road (Wheatley Harbour is
about 2km south of the centre of Wheatley).

I am not suggesting that this interesting gull I described is any particular
species that would be mega rare to Ontario like Yellow-legged or Caspian Gull,
as it appeared to be missing certain traits that I'd expect to see on either of
those species, hence the thorough description. I admittedly haven't had a
chance to reference much in the way of publications yet but I have a
premonition that it was either a very odd Herring Gull or perhaps a Herring x
Glaucous Gull or some similar combination. I just figured I'd throw it in here
in case anyone was interested in looking for/at it.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Cattle Egret + Great raptor migration - Wheatley

2016-11-03 Thread Jeremy Bensette
We just had a couple hundred raptors total over the last two hours while Hawk
watching from near Wheatley Harbour, including one Northern Goshawk and two
Golden Eagles in the last hour (one of the Golden Eagles just flew over a few
mins ago). They're likely over the county now, in case anyone wants to look for
them or just to do some quality hawk watching.

A Cattle Egret flew over us while we were there, seemingly landing somewhere in
or near the harbour, but we've lost track of it.

Wheatley Harbour is a couple kilometres due south of the centre of Wheatley, at
the border of Essex and Kent Counties.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Cave Swallow - Point Pelee National Park

2016-10-30 Thread Jeremy Bensette
About 40 minutes ago I had a Cave Swallow fly over The Tip area with two Tree
Swallows, heading north. A nice highlight for a rainy morning!

Point Pelee National Park is located at the end of Point Pelee Dr., about 10
mins driving southeast of Leamington, Essex County. The Tip parking lot is at
the end of the only road into the park. This is where I saw the Cave Swallow.

[Ontbirds] Cattle Egret - Hillman Marsh

2016-10-14 Thread Jeremy Bensette
Kit McCann found a Cattle Egret this afternoon at Hillman Marsh Shorebird Cell
and we are currently looking at it. It looks pretty comfortable and will
probably be around if anyone's interested in chasing it, at least for a good
part of the day.

Hillman Marsh is on Mersea Rd 2, about 6km east of Leamington in Essex County.
The shorebird cell is about a few hundred metres south of the main parking lot.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Common Raven - Point Pelee

2016-10-04 Thread Jeremy Bensette
I just had a Common Raven fly by calling at the tip!! This is a very rare
species for the Essex county and Point Pelee areas. I'm on the tram right now,
hoping to catch up with it near the visitor centre.

Point Pelee National Park is located at the end of Point Pelee Dr. southeast of
Leamington in Essex County.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] American White Pelicans - Point Pelee

2016-09-03 Thread Jeremy Bensette
We just found 14 American White Pelicans in the Point Pelee marsh in West
Cranberry Pond. They flew with the cormorants after the sun set but might be
back in the morning and should be identifiable from the Boardwalk Tower. Also
two Red Knots flew by, and a few Great Black-backed Gulls which are rather
uncommon in this area this summer. This one's for Alan: we love you buddy.

Point Pelee National Park is located at the end of Point Pelee Dr., southwest
of Leamington in Essex County. There is a sign for The Boardwalk where canoes
can be rented. West Cranberry Pond is in the northern central part of the
marsh.

The Common Ringed Plover was still present in the same spot described below, at

morning for anyone who didn't get a chance to see it today. Good luck to anyone

Re: [Ontbirds] Townsends warbler at rondeau

2016-06-02 Thread Jeremy Bensette
We just saw and heard the Townsend's Warbler singing in the trees closest to
the road in front of cottage 17372 Lakeshore Rd in Rondeau Provincial Park. It
has already quieted down again but with the hot sunny weather most of the
songbirds are much quieter than a couple hours ago. It will likely sing a lot
again in the late afternoon.

Thanks Steve!!

Re: [Ontbirds] Possible Mountain Plover - Hillman Marsh

2016-05-20 Thread Jeremy Bensette
After much better looks and much discussion, we are fairly sure that this is a
golden-plover. A number of plumage details have been seen better and due to a
combination of those traits and relative size we are all fairly set on it being
a golden-plover. Oh well, still a fun study!

[Ontbirds] Interesting birds at Hillman Marsh and Wheatley Harbour today

2016-03-22 Thread Jeremy Bensette
This afternoon, while walking a trail at Hillman Marsh, I saw a large size peep
type shorebird fly over, calling in a way that sounded very much like the call
of a Red Knot. This would be absurdly early for a Red Knot and I can only
assume at this point that it was a Pectoral Sandpiper with a slightly odd
voice. A Pectoral Sandpiper was seen elsewhere in the Leamington area today,
adding to the likeliness that the individual I saw today was also Pectoral, but
the odd vocalization and possibility of it being something else might be worth
keeping in mind if birding in the area.

Later, around 4pm, I noticed a huge group of gulls (probably 1-2 thousand)
following a fishing boat toward Wheatley Harbour. This group landed on the rock
wall near the harbour by about 5 pm and included at least 83 Great Black-backed
Gulls of varying age, a number of Bonaparte's Gulls, one adult Glaucous Gull,
and THREE adult 'Great Lakes Gulls' (hybrid Herring x Great Black-backed
Gulls).

Charadriformes are on the move!!

Hillman Marsh is located on Mersea Rd 2, about 6 km east of Leamington in Essex
County. Wheatley Harbour is located at the end of Erie St S, or on Milo Rd,
depending on which side of the harbour you choose to visit, about 3km south of
Wheatley, on the border between Essex and Kent Counties.

Good birding!

Re: [Ontbirds] Warwick: Gyrfalcon

2016-03-20 Thread Jeremy Bensette
The Gyrfalcon is currently still present in the same tree next to the road. It
is in a tree literally right next to the side of the road, about 150m west of
and across the street from 6380 Brickyard Line. This road is east of Hwy 21
(Forest Rd) and north of Warwick, Lambton County.

The Gyrfalcon appears to be startlingly tame, and if it is a wild individual
(which I do not doubt due to its apparent behaviour when it was first found
weeks ago) it is likely ill and emaciated. If its health does seem to continue
to diminish please do not chase this bird around to try to catch it to help it.
Birds of prey are extremely resilient to showing weakness and chasing it to try
to help it would likely lead to severe exhaustion and death.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Ross's Geese - Hillman Marsh, Leamington

2016-02-24 Thread Jeremy Bensette
This afternoon (about an hour ago, around 1400) we found a group of three
Ross's Geese hanging out with Canada Geese in a field on the south side of
Mersea Rd 1 near Hillman Marsh. Mersea Rd 1 is the east continuation of
Seacliffe Dr. in Leamington, Essex County. The road turns from pavement to
gravel about 4km east of Gore Hill School, and this is where that field with
the geese is located. All three look like pure Ross's Geese. Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Audubon's Warbler - Point Pelee National Park

2016-02-05 Thread Jeremy Bensette
I just found an "Audubon's" Yellow-rumped Warbler while walking the road at
Point Pelee. It's among a flock of about ten of our regular "Myrtle"
Yellow-rumped Warblers, and last I saw them they were feeding in some Red Cedar
trees near some chickadees, Brown Creepers, Blue Jays, and a rather large flock
of robins.

The warbler flock has been feeding on the east side of the road slightly north
of White Pine, between orange painted road marker 292 and the sign for White
Pine. Point Pelee National Park is located a few minutes southeast of
Leamington in Essex County.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Point Pelee National Park in Leamington - temporarily closed

2016-01-13 Thread Jeremy Bensette
Hello Ontario birders,

Since the park has not posted about this here, and only briefly on Facebook and
to a limited email list, I want to make sure that the Ontario birding community
knows that Point Pelee National Park in Essex County is closed from January 7
to January 19 of this year for 'deer management'. Hopefully this message
prevents people from making the trip in the next week only to find a closed
park. From what I understand it will be open again after January 19.

I have no official affiliation with Point Pelee National Park or Parks Canada,
so I have little information to offer beyond the above. Questions about this
topic should go to Parks Canada or Point Pelee staff. I just think birders
should know this in case anyone is planning a trip here in the coming week.

Good birding!
