Interesting. She asked you what your husband thinks of that. Well, I don't have a husband but I would probably reply that he didn't like my cats so I bumped him off and buried him in the used cat litter in the compost heap out back. Yeah, I know. I'm not very nice. Spay and Neuter your cats and dogs and your weird relatives and nasty neighbors too! A couple of comments: any cat with URI will have teary eyes and it may last for almost a month, unless treated with antibiotic ophthalmic drops or ointment. So it really doesn't have anything to do with the cat's FIV status. My cats have a very fastidious habit of perching on the edge of the litter box, like owls perching on tree branches. However, since most of my cats are of normal or porcine weight, over goes the litter box and I come in to a room I just cleaned and scrubbed to find pine pellets and dust everywhere, not to mention whatever the cat had put into the litter box in the first place. All over the floor. Aside from switching to clay litter and filling the box with 50 lbs. of the stuff, anyone have any idea about the tip-over problem? My last comment is this: anyone just happening onto this list and reading some of the posts would think that we are a bunch of lunatics having a bad hair day. Litter scattered all over, cats ordering us around, plastic and metal furniture, beds covered with plastic sheeting, disposable sofas? Until you have actually met a cat close up and personal, you don't understand. Then when you have, this all makes a lot of sense. Have a good holiday everyone. I like the idea of using velcro, especially for watr bowls. we don't swim in them but 2 like to paw at the water and flip it all over the floor. And if people have an attitude about cats and have never experienced their sweetness then they won't even give them a chance. Their loss, and a big one at that! OK, it is official. Oz has had multiple trauma (traumas?) His hips, right leg and end of spine (tailbone? Forgot to ask) ave all received injury/damage, some multiple times. Vet says still hard to say his age with no teeth, but some of the scarring is thick and probably been around a long time. Oz is a Sr citizen and has joint problems. He will be on pain meds (as will the vet probably after this last exam!) And probably anti-inflammatory soon. Because of the FIV he still has some eye seepage but cough and sneezing are much less so he looks and acts a lot better tho still a loaner. Miss Kitty snuck out once so far and was more than a bit miffed when I caught her and brought her back in. Has no sense of humor that Miss Kitty. Re: [Felvtalk] Cat in Ohio needs home
Note that one can transition kits to the much healthier wet food (and then healthy wet food, as opposed to Friskies, which is great for getting cats to eat anything) by adding in a little of the desired stuff at a time while subtracting the old stuff. Cats are instinctually fussy about food for a good evolutionary reason. You can also putting really smelly bonito flakes or tuna water on things they may otherwise not eat. I also use freeze-dried liver or salmon or chicken or beef (from save sources, not China), because it smells so strong. The nose is the gateway to a cat's stomach. Is there a way the vet can detect these possible lesions mentioned by digegg? The other Kathryn (call me Kathy). On Sat, Dec 1, 2012 at 7:31 PM, Kathryn Green katsk...@gmail.com wrote: THANK YOU! I had no idea we'd get hit so hard this far inland, as we are in the eastern mountains of WV, but we had no electricity for two weeks and we still don't have a phone or internet service. We have to drive out to a place that has service. Anyway, I was not able to check into the group all this time, and I was very worried about that cat in Ohio who was abandoned. Now I know both cats are fine and have found a home. THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES for your kindness in taking these poor babies. The woman who abandoned them should be ashamed of herself. I'd like to see her chained to her front porch all winter with no food or shelter! Lorrie and 24 rescued cats On 10-31, Kathryn Green wrote: Thanks to all for kind words. I am what I am - an animal lover. For those who care to know: I got both cats tho had to drive all the way to camp ground, (abt 6 hrs round trip), as cats were uncooperative to the point of downright hostility when Marcia's brother, Craig, had them in cardboard carriers. Cat scratch fever! He ended up putting them/in folding dog crate til I got there. Appears the grey one (actually more of a brown/black/grey tabby), was NOT the one the woman had deserted. The smaller black female was hers. The grey is a battle scarred fully intact male who roamed the campground. Craig had the honor of naming him - Ozzie it is. Oz for short. I am concerned about him as he is hoarse, has a funny nose, tearing eyes and sneezesupper resp issues at the very least I suspect. As soon as I closed them in my master bathroom (quarantine), he spent over 1/2 hr scarfing down food and water. Smaller black cat appears to have absolutely NO white on her. Not on chest, feet, tip of tail, nothing. Never seen one pure black before. She is a lover/lap cat. First thing out of carrier she made one round of bathroom and used the litter pan. You could learn to reupholster furniture and then when one cover was shredded, make a new one. That is what I am in the process of doing with a rocking chair that Homey shredded. I have the frame stripped and am working on taking the tape/braid off so I can remove the fabric. The tape is glued on and have to use an iron to melt the glue to get it off. Good winter project! In the mantime, if people do not like my shredded furniture, they can stay away so they won't have to get upset. I agree with you, I like my cats more than the stuff. It's a breed. Looks almost black but in the light can see that fur is dark dark brown. Small cat with wonderful personality. Probably has some Burmese. Re: [Felvtalk] Cat in Ohio needs home
Thanks to all for kind words. My kind of Kitty. Unless Craig or Marcia come up with something else I am calling her Miss Kitty after Marshall Dillion's lady friend in Gun Smoke. According to Craig he talked to the lady who left her behind and Miss Kitty has been spayed and tested neg for FeLV. I have to ask him if he knows if she has had her vaccinations or not cause I don't want to double dose her. Hi all, a couple of notes -- 1) When brother goes to vets to get cardboard carriers -- see if he can borrow PLASTIC carriers. The cardboard carriers are not ideal for rescue -- they can very easily open, bottom can just fall out. If get wet, even worse. In emergency, we've done some rescues with cardboard carriers (or a cardboard box), but if possible, get PLASTIC. Have brother bring towels, drape the carrier(s) with cats in them after he gets them into his car. This helps calm down even very tame kibs. 2) Many cats do not know how to hunt -- momcat needs to teach them, in most cases. 3) Check whatever the official animal control, for that area -- check anonymously to make sure can list as found, without relinquishing cats. Do list as found, if you can! People tend to always assume this cat was purposefully dumped by their owner, when most of the time that's not the case -- -- someone who is NOT the owner could dump a cat -- cat could have gotten out of car, if person didn't understand you need to keep cats, who are in vehicles, in a cage or carrier 99 plus percent of the time, you'll never get a response. Thank you for the info about cardboard carriers. This is a for sure abandonment. My brother has been there all summer. So has the lady with the cat. She took it in, fed it etc for about 7 months and then just left it. He said she tried to find a home with no prospects. So she just left! Nice huh? But great info about finding owners. Did he by any chance get the woman's name or car license plate number to look her up or do people have to register to use the camp grounds? He name would be on the registration. There must be some way to contact the woman or the camp manager and get the cat to safety or have the woman foot the bill for a vet clinic to board the cat until a foster home can be found. A shelter will simply kill the cat. If your brother can pack the kitty into a carrier, the dog won't make a snack of him until they can travel to a safe location for the cat. I don't agree at all. Cats are very oriented toward survival. I have a feral colony and have had numerous ferals as companions. Cats revert to ferals quickly. No life won't be easy but this is a last minute call for help and killing a cat just doesn't work for me. No, I do not advocate dumping cats but this one is already on his own. A Rubbermaid tote outfitted with proper bedding and a hole near the top of one long end will help a lot. Re: [Felvtalk] Cat in Ohio needs home
While shelters DO kill animals everyday, I again have to say that going to sleep is far better than starving to death, being eaten by a coyote or freezing to death. I work with the local County run shelter and YES, I know animals go in but don't make it out alive; however, I would rather than than to see them hit again and again and again on Houston freeways, laying there for days suffering :( or used as bait, die of disease and starvation, etc. etc. Sometimes the most humane thing we can do is to get an animal to a shelter and simply say a prayer. I never expect people to take in the amounts of animals that we take in; however, I DO respectfully request that they not just leave one behind when there are shelters in the area, even kill shelters. Just my two cents. Turn the opening toward a building to keep the rain out or better, put it under an overhang of a building. At least he wold be warm and dry. Hopefully, he could catch enough mice to survive. Hey, I'm no big proponent of churches and may those pastors go straight to you know where if there is such a place. I have met a few nice sisters at Incarnate Word University so I was basing my knowledge on that. They maintain a large spayed and neutered feral colony outside the convent, in spite of some opposition from the priests and are very knowledgeable about FeLv and FIV. But I still maintain that if the camp grounds had cabins on them, people must have had to sign in and someone could find out who lived in the cabin and get the police on her ass. I do believe that in any state, abandonment of an animal is at least a misdemeanor. Of course, in this best of all possible worlds, probably not, probably not even if you dump your kids out on the road and take off. Sigh! Am I getting cynical or what... My brother is at s campsite and a woman there took in a cat , made it into a housecat and the left it there. She packed up and left for the winter. He said its curled up on the porch on a towel in 20 degree wind chill. I am pissed but I know that isn't helping this poor cat. Everyone will be gone from that campground for the season. My brother is leaving tomorrow. His dog would eat the cat so he can't take it. Shelters r full. Anyone have any ideas??
