Re: [Framers] San Serif Font?

2024-03-21 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello Tammy,

"Standard" with Windows?   I find that Microsoft will make changes to
their Windows and Office offerings as they want to, and Adobe tends to
supply few and fewer fonts with every product release. For example,
Microsoft recently changed the default Office font from Calibri to Aptos.

Fonts that come with Windows are not the same as fonts that are supplied
when Microsoft Office is installed.
One good example of this is "Arial".  When some versions of Office were
installed, Arial got a "Unicode MS" variant which had many more font
glyphs than the original Arial. This would sometimes cause problems when
Word documents were shared with users who didn't have the extra fonts
installed.

I would suggest to specify a font the customer wants, regardless of what
Microsoft specifies.
This way you/customer can choose which fonts to use, but also determine
under which license the fonts are available.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2019 and the limit of Windows 10?

2024-02-21 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

Since my last email on this subject, I discovered that the Adobe
ExtendScript application is still a 32-bit application, and there are
times when a regular file Open() function call will just error.

After a great deal of investigation, we have determined the cause of the
crash was due to the FrameMaker console window being closed.
I have always promoted that console windows should *never* be closed as
warnings are there for a reason!

Hello Framers,

I have been investigating a problem reported by one of my customers.
They have 1 book file containing 1554 FrameMaker documents, plus 2
FrameMaker generated documents.

They have managed to publish their book file to PDF, but when they try
exporting the book to XML, FrameMaker crashes badly.

I have chopped the book up, and it appears that FrameMaker baulks after
processing around 700 files - sometimes with Internal Error, sometimes with
just hanging the app. A large number [>1400] of the FrameMaker documents
contain imported by reference graphics. Even with removing the mount point
of the graphics [so FrameMaker will show a gray box instead], and also with
setting the View > Hide Graphics option on each file,

I tried using ExtendScript to read content from each of the files, but after
approximately 710 files, I received the FrameMaker warning dialog:
Insufficient memory to display the dialog box. Close one or more windows and
try again.
i.e. Insufficient memory to display the dialog box. Close one or more
windows and try again.

According to Windows 10 [64-bit], the Task Manager indicates memory usage on
the workstation is 3.6Gb out of an available 12.1Gb.

Has anyone here experienced problems when dealing with such large book
files?

2024-02-16 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello Rick,

Thank you for the quick response.
I have checked, and I am using the 64-bit version of Adobe FrameMaker 2019.

My company's software uses the Frame FDK to connect with FrameMaker.

I have deliberately disabled the software "plugin" to troubleshoot the
behaviour in structured mode FrameMaker, but as I can't even process all
the files in the book, I suspect there is a system limit.

2024-02-02 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

MERDE!   that is crap!   [also the Framers mailing list doesn't appear
to support 'special' characters]

So, are you using the straight single quote - AKA "apostrophe" (U+0027)
i.e. '
or is FrameMaker using "smart quotes", which gives "curved" left/right
single quotation marks (U+2018/U+2019) i.e. ‘ ’

What is the option set to in the FrameMaker Edit > Preference + Spelling
> Smart Quotes section for French language?

There is an Adobe video that demonstrates this option ...
but why doesn't Adobe "document" this in text rather than having to
watch a video?

Re: [Framers] Single quotation mark in French

2024-02-01 Thread Simon BUCH

Bonjour tout le monde

It's not a stupid idea.  It's standard [traditional] French typography
rules that specify that a half space is between the guillmet [simple or
double] and the enclosed text.   Québecois French on the other hand may
not follow the same rules.

« Vivre la différence! »

You might need to change character tags or paragraph tags to apply no
language specification.
Alternatively, there may be a text option somewhere located in the
Format menu ... or wherever Adobe have moved it!

Re: [Framers] Document reflows when saving to PDF

2023-08-24 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

What is your default printer in Windows?   Or are you allowing Windows
to control it for you?
If you don't have "Adobe PDF" configured as the default printer, then
FrameMaker may get font metrics based on the printer.

Are you using Windows Remote Desktop?  [AKA Microsoft Terminal Services
client, AKA MSTSC.exe]?

Are you sharing printers between your workstations?

But I suspect that your document may contain a paragraph format that
still references "Type 1" [PostScript] font.
You could save your FrameMaker document as MIF, and then open the MIF in
a good text editor like NotePad++ to locate the 'Times' font.
Alternatively, go to the FrameMaker preferences dialog Edit >
Preferences; and UNtick the "remember missing font names" check box.
When you reopen the document, FrameMaker will actively change any Times
font references to Times New Roman.

Roman but Calibri. Querying the properties in FrameMaker and Acrobat show
that they are both Calibri 9 point. I have seen this message in the past,

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker crashes

2022-10-03 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

I have observed the same behaviour at my customer's offices since at
least FrameMaker 14.   They have some high end HP workstations with
heaps of RAM, very large displays [4K+], with fast graphic cards.

What happens is that the display of the FrameMaker document will become
corrupted with textual content being displayed in the Windows’ System
Bold font - as shown below:

Additionally, the FrameMaker menus will go blank, and attempts to access
the menus will yield black rectangle shapes, and the mouse pointer will
turn in to the Windows spinning blue wheel.   This leads me to think
it's a bug with the Windows GDI bug.

I have not observed the behaviour on any of my FrameMaker installations
on my local workstations which meet the Adobe FrameMaker system
requirements.

If I am dealing with a large number of documents, I tend to get in to a
habit of exiting all applications, making timed backups of working
version files [maybe as a ZIP archive file] - often with a note
indicating the last completed task.  Then restarting Windows.

*auto files (or rename them, saving the originals just in case into another
directory), restart the whole thing, check manually that the chapters are
in the right state - all tedious for a 40-chapter book.

It's really bizarre that after all these years, in a product with the Adobe
label, there are still such crashes.

Does anyone know any way to present them from happening? I guess exiting
after a few days of use and restarting is prudent (if unpleasant in 2022),
is there a better way?

Re: [Framers] making a table row conditional

2022-07-13 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

Can recent releases of FrameMaker exclude a table row from output
using conditional text?

When I started working at Adobe [in 1997], they had bought Frame
Technologies, and had released FrameMaker 5.5.
But due to some users finding some document parts would get corrupted
switching conditional text, Adobe quickly released FM 5.5.6 which solved
that problem.

Re: [Framers] Save to PDF - Minutes turned into hours

2022-06-14 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

I have experienced this many times with my customers where documents
fail to print, or are very slow to print.

The behaviour seems to be exacerbated by having embedded PDF in a
FrameMaker document, or graphics that contain transparency.

I discovered this years ago, and it's actually an interaction between
Microsoft anti-virus products and the Acrobat Distiller [Adobe PDF
printer] process that causes it to hang while attempting to print any
documents which contain embedded graphics with transparency areas.
Documents that don't have transparent graphics often print without any
problem.

The antivirus products known to experience this behaviour are:
•    Windows Defender
•    Windows Intune Endpoint Protection
•    Microsoft Security Essentials
•    Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection
•    Microsoft Forefront Security for SharePoint
•    Microsoft Endpoint Protection
•    Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection

To allow FrameMaker and Acrobat Distiller to print, and if you make use
of Microsoft anti-virus products, it is recommended to configure the
antivirus product to exclude scanning the processes such as:

%ProgramFiles%\Adobe\Adobe FrameMaker 2019\FrameMaker.exe
%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Adobe\Acrobat 2015\Acrobat\acrodist.exe
… and also to exclude scanning the folders and files below:
%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Adobe

If your IT department don't permit you do add these exceptions, inform
them that their choice of antivirus product prevents you from producing
PDF using the Adobe PDF printer, and make it *their* problem!
I would also advise them that the Microsoft "Print to PDF" printer is
*not* an option as it does not provide all the features you require to
create your PDF.

I hope this helps resolve the problems you have experienced.

2 - files saved on network locations
3 - files located on a failing drive

#1 was very irritating.  A combination of Windows 10 and HP hardware
actually corrupted not just FrameMaker documents, but also other files -
with no identifiable pattern to it.   As a result, I avoid using USB
drives for everyday working.

#2 has been frustrating.  If the network drive, or the network
connection speed is slow, I've experienced FrameMaker crashing when
attempting to update books, or worse, when attempting to access
referenced PDF files.

#3 was experienced by our FM trainer who thought his computer had caught
a virus.  I diagnosed [using "CrystalDiskPortable"] the hard drive was
in fact failing to read and write files ... occasionally!    After using
the Linux utility ddrescue, I was able to retrieve 99.99% of his files.

If I remember correctly, FrameMaker files are always written out in
multiples of 1024 bytes [1kb].

If I'm working on a big project, I get in to the habit of using a
frequent backup strategy to store FM and other documents in a ZIP
archive file with a timestamp reference.  Just in case.

I hope this helps.

Re: [Framers] Appearance of graphics in the generated PDF

2021-08-06 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello Tammy,

I have seen this effect before [many years ago with FrameMaker 5.5.6!]
where one customer wanted to insert content from Office, and so did a
Copy, and Paste in FrameMaker.   This resulted in a "Object link
embedded" graphic.   With a range of tests, we determined that you
couldn't even use the "graphic" in WordPad as it suffered exactly the
same problem that you see when printing it from FrameMaker.

Microsoft claim that they still support OLE.   If they do, then they've
been supporting it very badly, as they seem to think it works.

The best way to get the 'graphics' from Word is to save the document as
DOCX format, and open the DOCX from ZIP archive program such as 7-zip.
Alternatively, do a File > Save As [or wherever Microsoft have moved the
function], and save the file to HTML format - which should then give you
easy access to the graphics.

HTH!

Re: [Framers] Appearance of graphics in the generated PDF

2021-08-06 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

How are you making the PDF?
Using File > Print, and sending the print job to the Adobe PDF printer?

I would first of all check the Adobe PDF print options.   The 'standard'
settings will often downsample monochome, gray scale, and colour
graphics to unacceptable quality.   Then remember that with Windows
printer drivers, you not only have to configure the "Printing
preferences", but you also *must* configure the "Advanced" 'Printing
Defaults', usually with the same parameters.

I suspect that Word has stored the equations as 24 bit colour, which the
Acrobat Distiller process is then mutating.

For most purposes, 8 bit gray scale is usually sufficient.

image.(n), where n is the image number. I double-click an equation in this
folder to automatically open the equation in my image editor (SnagIT - I
don't need anything as heavy as Photoshop as I am not doing any
modifications to the equations) and save the equation without any changes to
it whatsoever with a new name. I then import the image into Framemaker by
reference. I don't mess w/ the dpi of the image when I select it for
import - any image in the folder that was created during the saving of the
Word file shows a dpi of 96 in the Imported Graphic Scaling dialog box when
I select it for import and although this seems nutty to me (because none of
the images are over-sized). . . they look clear and crisp in the source FM
file (The Advanced Properties of any image in SnagIT is also showing a
resolution of 96 dpi); however, upon generation of the PDF, it goes to h*ll
in a handbasket. The equation looks almost as if the font is almost bold and
therefore much darker than the text in the FM source file, and it's not
nearly as crisp and clear as in the source FM document - it actually looks
blurry/pixelated.

Initially, the font that was being used in the equations is Cambria Math,
Size 14 with a default color of black without any lightening of the color.
(The font that is being used in the book is also set to a default color of
black without any lightening of the color.) I tried lightening the font
color by different percentages in the Word document and then regenerated the
equations as graphics, and that helps a bit, but overall, these graphics are
just not nearly as crisp as they need to be in the final PDF. Any other
graphics that were taken as a capture and then imported by reference as PNG
are as crisp as I am used to in FM.

I am just at a loss for how to get this cleared up, but it's absolutely
mandatory that I get this problem resolved because the whole focus of the
book is the equations.

Any thoughts are sincerely appreciated.

[Framers] Adobe's web site for FrameMaker resources - why are all the links broken?

2021-06-25 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello Framers,

Do you remember the days when Adobe would allow you to download specific
revisions of FrameMaker from the Support downloads page?   It appears
that somebody at Adobe made changes, but failed to update URLs.

The Adobe FrameMaker downloads page:
https://helpx.adobe.com/framemaker/kb/framemaker-downloads.html
indicates "To download updates for the current or earlier versions of
FrameMaker, visit the updates Download page." - which takes you to a
non-functioning web server:

https://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=22=Windows

The web site hosting the Adobe Support downloads page is non-functional too:
http://supportdownloads.adobe.com/product.jsp?product=22=Windows

I tried accessing these URLs from my ISP in Scotland, and also from Los
Angeles, but nothing changed.

So I looked on the Adobe Help page that details the latest fixed issues
in FrameMaker (2019 release):

https://helpx.adobe.com/framemaker/kb/resolved-issues-framemaker-2019.html
and the link to the FrameMaker 15.0.8 version is pointing to the defunct
web site:

    https://supportdownloads.adobe.com/detail.jsp?ftpID=7065

If there's anybody at Adobe reading this, FIX IT!

[Framers] Windows 10 cursors and Adobe products

2021-04-26 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

Windows 10 allows for mouse cursor pointers to be customised, and so I
when I give training course, I like to use a larger mouse pointer, and
colour it so that you can see it more easily when your video output it
for a projector.

The larger mouse pointers work well on many applications.
Except Adobe.

* Adobe Acrobat Reader shows the large size & coloured mouse pointer at
the expected size when viewing Help > About Adobe Acrobat Reader, or
when accessing dialogs, such as Edit > Preferences.  But as soon as your
mouse pointer touches the PDF document, it shrivels to the standard
monochrome pointer at the default Windows size.

* Adobe FrameMaker 2017 appears to use some historic UI constructs.
Click inside your document, and the mouse pointer stays large, but
becomes badly blocky and monochrome, and looks like it's an 8 bit
application with zero anti-aliasing, completely devoid of any colour
concept.  The structure view is similarly affected.

Does anyone else have accessibility issues with Adobe Products?

Re: [Framers] Rendering embedded Visio with shading/pattern fill from FM to PDF problem

2020-12-30 Thread Simon Buch
Hello,

The last time I tried using Microsoft Visio OLE objects with
FrameMaker was quite some years ago, and produced poor results while
printing. It turns out that Microsoft Office can handle OLE objects,
but almost nothing else.

At the time, WordPad [write.exe] was the Microsoft approved
application for testing OLE, and produced very poor results -
especially in diagrams with clouds and shadows.

The solution was fairly easy - export Visio to a file format that
other applications can use, and pick the one that works best. This was
by far the easiest way so that every file could be version controlled
and managed well.

Typically, if problems are reported in FrameMaker, I like to see how
other applications handle the content - and often don't.

Re: [Framers] ExtendScript does not set Property ival

2020-12-07 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

I dabble in FrameMaker Extendscript, and I find it quite tricky to get
right - especially when dealing with structured content.

The Find() statement has the syntax: Find(textLoc, findParams)
where textLoc is a TextLoc data type, and findParams is a PropVals data
type.

The only times that I have played with PropVals is for file open
operations which I find requires a fair bit of knowledge to get right.
For example, if I want to open a file but ignore the 'missing fonts'
errors, you need to get a property list index for the feature constant
item, and then set the property value:

    var index, file, props, returnnp = new PropVals();
    props = GetOpenDefaultParams();
    //Ignore the "missing fonts" errors
    index = GetPropIndex(props, Constants.FS_FontNotFoundInCatalog);
    if (index > -1) props[index].propVal.ival = Constants.FV_DoOK;
    index = GetPropIndex(props, Constants.FS_FontNotFoundInDoc);
    if (index > -1) props[index].propVal.ival = Constants.FV_DoOK;
    file = Open(path, props, returnp);

So, I think you might have to find the property item, and then set the
ival [integer value] and sval [string values] like this:

    var sProps = new PropVals(), flagCombo = 0, index ;
    index = GetPropIndex(sProps, Constants.FS_FindText)
    if (index > -1) sProp[index].propVal.sval = sSearch ;
// don't wrap the search around to the top
    index = GetPropIndex(sProps, Constants.FS_FindWrap)
    if (index > -1) sProp[index].propVal.ival = false ;
    // set the appropriate flags
    index = GetPropIndex(sProps, Constant.FS_FindCustomizationFlags)
    if (bCase)  flagCombo |= Constants.FF_FIND_CONSIDER_CASE ;
    if (bRegEx) flagCombo |= Constants.FF_FIND_USE_REGEX;
    if (bWild)  flagCombo |= Constants.FF_FIND_USE_WILDCARDS;
    if (bWord)  flagCombo |= Constants.FF_FIND_WHOLE_WORD;
    if (bBack)  flagCombo |= Constants.FF_FIND_BACKWARDS;
    if (index > -1) sProp[index].propVal.ival = flagCombo
    // do the Find!
    Find(yourTextLoc, sProps)
// don't forget to check the error code - just in case!

I hope this helps.

[Framers] Adobe licensing is migrating to subscription based

the above-mentioned products through Channel (Adobe authorized
resellers) under Transactional Licensing Program (TLP) and
Cumulative Licensing Program (CLP) even after 1 July 2019./"

... it appears that Adobe has made the decision that the purchase of
perpetual licenses only applies to Adobe FrameMaker 15 AKA 2019 release.
As quoted from the Adobe Territory Account Manager:

"/FrameMaker 2019 will be available in Perpetual format.
This mean, internet will not be required to keep the license active.
This should be available for limited time."
   /

and /that//:/

/"Going forward, all the FrameMaker versions will only be available
   in Subscription.//
//That said, we still can support these licenses in an offline
   environment./"

But no further information was given.

Currently subscription costs stand at approximately US$30 / GB£30.34 /
€UR 36 / AU$45 etc. per month.

Arial Unicode MS was never supplied with Microsoft Windows.

It was supplied with Microsoft Office suite applications, and I don't

Microsoft stopped "servicing and updating" the font, but you can

Re: [Framers] Hallucinating Re: Script/ to sort files in a FrameMaker book file?

2020-05-22 Thread Simon BUCH
You are not hallucinating Craig, I have observed this behaviour many
times before.

If you're using Windows Explorer to add files in to a FrameMaker book:
a. select the View > Details menu item in Windows Explorer, and click
the "Name" column header to sort by the file names

b. use a mouse to click and select files
c. hover over the first file in the selection, then click and drag this
range of files in to the FrameMaker book

If you're using the FrameMaker Insert > Files... menu item / "Add files
to book" dialog:

i. select the range of files
ii. click the "Name" column header to sort by the file names in REVERSE
sort order

iii. click Add button

NOTE: If you use FrameMaker Structured books, I have observed some
occasions where dragging files to sort the order of the files in the
book will cause the Structure View window to get the files in the
structure branch completely inverted.  When this happens, additional
book operations can cause FrameMaker to crash.

Ex. Files are added in this order: Test4-fm, Test3.fm, Test2.fm, Test1.fm no

That seems really arbitrary to me.

[Framers] Has anyone experienced FM2019 crashes while importing EDD in books?

2020-05-20 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

I have had a troublesome EDD problem.  I have structured a FM book
containing structured FM files, which have been opened and updated to
FM15/FM2019, but the element definitions [EDD] in the book and the files
is from the previous version FM14/FM2017.

As my FM15 EDD contains some structural changes - to table structures, I
need to import them.
If I select all the files in the book, and import EDD from the FM14 EDD,
all the files are updated.
If I select all the files in the book, and import EDD from the FM15 EDD,
all the files are updated.
If I import the FM14 EDD to the book, the book EDD version updated, and
File > Save works.

But ... if I import the FM15 EDD to the book, the book EDD version is
updated, but File > Save crashes FrameMaker with an Internal Error dialog.

I have been able to workaround this crash by using File > Save As ;
saving as MIF 2019 format; File > Close ; File > Open the MIF ; and
finally File > Save as FM 2019 document format.

Rather frustratingly, if I remove the changes of one table structure of
one of the documents, the Book can be updated and saved without error.
But if I try changing the EDD - while still keeping the document and
book structure valid - and try the operation again, I can either get the
FrameMaker Internal Error dialog, or worse still, FrameMaker just being
killed off and the process dies with no warning.

Has anyone else experienced such an effect?

Re: [Framers] Grammar question

2020-04-21 Thread Simon BUCH
That all depends on your "style protocol", and also the region in which
you are located.

Some companies insist that abbreviations follow sound rules, where if
the first letter sound is vowel, then 'an' is used.  But then they use
it inconsistently.

For example: I would say "a LWT production". But I have seen an
end-credit on a TV programme as "an LWT production".

Would do say: "a STV employee"? ; or "an STV employee"?
or how about: "a NUJ member"? ; or "an NUJ member"?

I go by the theory that if the unabbreviated version doesn't require
'an', then the abbreviation should not.

But your mileage may vary.

Re: [Framers] Frame Updates

2020-04-13 Thread Simon BUCH
If you log in to the Adobe Tracker System:
https://tracker.adobe.com/#/view/FRMAKER-6739

there is a comment indicating that it is fixed in FM2020

FrameMaker 15 [AKA 2019] was released on 22 August 2019, and based upon
release dates of prior versions, it may be up to 18 months from then,
which would make it around March 2021.  Unless Adobe marketing want to
strategise the release and deploy it sooner.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2015

2020-04-02 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello everybody,

I have found that the standard Windows 10 setting for making font sizes
larger affects not only the text, but also affects the Adobe "Glass"
user interface - where clicking one menu heading would open the menu a
distance away from where you had clicked.

That behaviour was exacerbated when using "Touch" user interface, and
especially with very large displays.

What I did...

1. From the Windows font settings, I selected the recommended size
(1920x1080) and 100% font size.
2. Restarted Windows 10 and waited for updates to be applied.
3. Opened Frame 2015.
4. Selected Edit > Preferences.
5. Under Monitor Size, selected 22" (don't know that it matters).
6. Clicked OK.
7. Closed Frame 2015.
8. Opened Frame 2015.
9. Selected Edit > Preferences.
10. Under Monitor Size, selected Default.
11. Clicked OK.
12. Verified that all looked honkey dorey.
13. Closed Frame 2015.
14. Opened Frame 2015.
15. Did a butt dance from sheer joy.

Note: I one thing I neglected to do was open Frame BEFORE I applied all the
various Windows updates hooey-phooey. OOPS!

[Framers] FM 2017 and 2019 crash when opening files containing long variable strings defined with non-breaking space characters

2020-01-06 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

Just to let you guys know - If you make use of FrameMaker variables,
FrameMaker can store long strings in memory, but when it comes to
displaying the content, it will show either 1023 characters, or
sometimes 1024.

But the real problem with using long strings is that FrameMaker will
crash IF you have a string longer than 1024 characters AND contains a
special characters such as non-breaking space "\ " [\x11 in MIF] AND if
you are opening the document as the first document since launch.
If you open a New > Portrait document, and then open the bad document,
don't attempt to open the Insert > Variables pane - FrameMaker will
crash again!

I have logged this behaviour on the Adobe tracker portal:
https://tracker.adobe.com/#/view/FRMAKER-7708

When will Adobe allow strings to be longer than 1024 bytes?

Re: [Framers] What is going on with Adobe Licensing for FrameMaker?

2019-10-24 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

I sent my question to Adobe Technical Communication
who were nice enough to respond.

ATC indicated that:
"if (and when) Adobe stops selling perpetual licenses of TECH COMM
products like FrameMaker, RoboHelp etc. - we will always take care of
special cases where customers need to work in an OFFLINE environment and
need to activate their software over email/telephone (not Internet).
Adobe customer support team would handle such cases to ensure that the
customer is not stuck at any point of time."
ATC also indicated that they will review the training for their sales
teams as the information was inaccurate.

The software activation requirement is actually the current situation
with the Adobe FrameMaker where software activation *must* be performed
directly on the internet, or indirectly via request/response codes.

From reading the available information, the license upgrades for future
versions of FrameMaker will only be available via:

    Transactional Licensing Program (TLP)
and
    Cumulative Licensing Program (CLP)
... so if you're not on these programmes, getting newer versions of
Adobe TC products are likely to cost you more.

Many thanks to everyone who responded.

[Framers] Importing large PDF documents i.e. over 1.27 metres

2019-10-08 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

In all the years that I have been using Adobe FrameMaker, I know it can
handle some humongous sized documents - up to 216 inches square i.e.
5.48 metres!

However today I found that I am unable to import a large PDF document at
100%.  The PDF is 1.35m x 40cm, and FrameMaker keeps resizing it to be
50% of the size.

If I try to resize it, I get the FrameMaker warning message:
Object size is too large or too small.
The width and height must be between 0.125 and 3600 points.

3600 points is only 50 inches == 1.27m

Has anyone encountered this limitation before?

Re: [Framers] OT: (Kinda') Spam to Adobe Partners

2019-08-22 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello FrameUsers,

I suspect that some of the email addresses may have been sourced from
unscrupulous web site that store data from breaches in web site security.

It should be remembered that back in October 2013, over 153 million
Adobe accounts were breached with each containing an internal ID,
username, email, encrypted password and a password hint in plain text.
The password cryptography was poorly done and many were quickly resolved
back to plain text. The unencrypted hints also disclosed much about the
passwords adding further to the risk that hundreds of millions of Adobe
customers already faced.   The compromised data from this event was:
Email addresses, Password hints, Passwords, and Usernames

You might want to check your email address using the "Have I Been

[Framers] Strange corruption when using FrameMaker 14.0.3.500 [2017 release]

2019-02-21 Thread Simon Buch
Hello Framers,

In all the years I have used FrameMaker [since 3.0], I have rarely seen
FrameMaker get into the state that I am currently experiencing at my
customer site.

I took a screenshot the first time it occurred.

While editing a number of documents for extended periods - maybe over 6
hours - all the fonts in the document suddenly mutate to the Windows
"System" font, as shown in the first screenshot.

After that occurs, the FrameMaker menu goes completely blank, and any
attempt to access any of the menus - such as File > Exit yields an entirely
black menu being shown, and no menu functions available. The only way to
quit FrameMaker is to force quit the process using Windows Task Manager.

The same behaviour happened again this morning, but instead of showing the
document content, it looks like Windows is painting part of the corrupted
display as it overlapped the book pane, and the document pane.

The customer machines are well specified - 32Gb of system memory, running
on Windows 10.

Have any other FrameUsers experienced similar display issues?

[Framers] "-1" tooltip is displayed on some FrameMaker 14 [2017 release] dialogs

I was in the process of making some screenshots for a product release

If you select Edit > Preferences menu item, and mouse over the drop-down

Can anyone try this on FM 15 [2019 release] ?

Re: [Framers] Update on printing issue with Windows 10 1803 Build

2018-07-09 Thread Simon BUCH
Adobe appears to have made a KB article about this, and supplied updates
for the English, French, German, and Japanese versions of Adobe
FrameMaker 2015 and 2017 from this page:

https://helpx.adobe.com/framemaker/kb/cannot-generate-pdf-after-win-10-april-update.html
There is no installer for this file - you have to extract the EXE file,
and replace the existing FrameMaker.exe file.

According to the Adobe Tech Comms Tools Product Manager, there's a forum
entry that indicates that the PDF output may affect PDF output as the
Windows change affects widths of printing of characters.

As it is not listed on the Adobe Downloads support page:
https://supportdownloads.adobe.com/product.jsp?product=22=Windows
... I would hazard a guess that Adobe won't say it is really fixed yet.

P.S. I so detest Windows 10.  It makes Windows 8 look positively stable
and well designed!

Re: [Framers] Windows Anti-virus prevents PDF generation in unique graphic setup

2018-05-18 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello Carla,

I have previously experienced this some years ago, and another user in
this forum also experienced this - around 7 March 2013.

From my investigations, it appears that any graphic with a transparency
layer cause the Microsoft AV engine to work overtime, and fail to print
anything.  Looking into the problem further, I discovered Microsoft have
multiple AV products, such as:

•    Microsoft Security Essentials
•    Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection
•    Microsoft Forefront Security for SharePoint
•    Microsoft Endpoint Protection
•    Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection
•    Windows Intune Endpoint Protection
•    Windows Defender

It should be noted that Windows 10 is supplied with a copy of Microsoft
Windows Defender, and it is not possible to uninstall.
It is typically deactivated when a third party antivirus product is
installed.

To allow FrameMaker and Acrobat Distiller to print, if you make use of
Microsoft anti-virus products, it is recommended to configure the
antivirus product to exclude scanning the processes such as:

    %PROGRAMFILES(x86)%\Adobe\Adobe FrameMaker 2017\FrameMaker.exe
    %PROGRAMFILES(x86)%\Adobe\Acrobat 2015\Acrobat\acrodist.exe
… and also to exclude scanning the folders and files below:
    %PROGRAMFILES(x86)%\Adobe

Operating System
Windows 10 / Windows 7 Ultimate

Applications
FrameMaker 2017, version: 14.0.4.511
Illustrator CC 2018, version 22.1 (64 bit)
Photoshop CC 2018, version 19.1.4
Distiller DC, Professional Version 18.11.20040281318

Conditions to reproduce the problem
The FrameMaker file contains a link to an .ai file. The linked .ai file
contains a linked .psd file. The .psd file has a clipping mask in Illustrator,
and part of the clipped image that is not visible extends past the artboard
edge in the .ai file.
If Microsoft Security Essentials (Windows 7) or Windows Defender (Windows 10)
real-time protection is turned on, the PostScript file will take much longer to
print than if real-time protection was off. Not tested using other versions of
Windows.
In the FrameMaker book that brought this to our attention, there were 127 pages
and 31 linked .ai files that met the criteria above to reproduce the problem.
Printing to a Postscript file took around 14 hours to complete. Once real-time
file protection was turned off, printing to a PostScript file took around 5
minutes.

Re: [Framers] Putting Text in a gray box? - Can it be a para tag?

2018-05-10 Thread Simon BUCH

The delights of formatting ...

You can make a gray box by making a table format, with specific ruling
and shading properties. Then insert a table with 1 cell, 1 row.
The only down-side to this is that FrameMaker will only allow a cell to
be 1 page long.

You may also want to specify the table design to use a specific
paragraph format for your mono-spaced Courier font, with the Paragraph
Designer > Advanced > Word Spacing properties set with the minimum,
maximum, and optimum spacing = 100% ; otherwise the spacing of the font
may look bizarre at times.

[Framers] in FrameMaker 2017 release, Who's zoomin' who?

2018-04-10 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

When preparing FrameMaker documents for a customer, in older versions of
FrameMaker, I could select files in the book file, hit ESC z z ; or ESC
z i ; or ESC z o ; and the zoom setting would be applied to the all the
documents.

I'm using FM2017, aka version 14.0.3.500, the zoom settings appear to
operate on the book itself, showing the document icons at 100%, or
larger or smaller.

I've searched the manual and other resources to no avail, and the Adobe
bugs base https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm ; fails with a Tomcat
server error!

How can I get the older functionality to set the zoom setting of each
document?

[Framers] Symbol Bold? Re: Framers Digest, Vol 142, Issue 17

2018-01-30 Thread Simon BUCH

I just thought I would add in my $0.02 worth to this.

I have found that some Microsoft Office products [Outlook, Word, Excel,
etc.] make fake fonts, where weights and styles do not exist - such as
the Symbol font.  If there is any text in Symbol, and bold effect is
applied, Office products will tag it as "Symbol Bold", and will then
display a bolded version of the font, even though the Symbol Bold font
is not installed.

I suspect that there may be a paragraph tag, or character tag definition
that tries to reference it.  To hunt down the rogue font reference, I
would suggest saving the file as MIF format, and opening the MIF in a
text editor to search for the definition.

Stefan, SymbolBolded is reported as missing even though the docs have

SymbolBolded is not in the Fonts pod. I've searched for it with no
luck. It's not on the body, reference, or master pages. I've even
looked at one of the MIF files and didn't see Symbol Bolded anywhere.

Re: [Framers] Linking to a LAN Shared Drive

2017-10-06 Thread Simon BUCH

FrameMaker uses the backslash character in dialogs for specifying
special characters, such as \D equates to a double dagger symbol. To
avoid this, you will need to double up the backslashes, thus:

file:///xxx.xxx.xxx\\xx\\CORP\\MANY\\DEPTDATA\\\\xxx_Reference.pdf

FrameMaker historically had multi-platform support, and so all path
names in FrameMaker can be specified using forward slashes, for example:

    file://hostname/xx/CORP/MANY/DEPTDATA//xxx_Reference.pdf

You may want to consider NOT referencing file content, as some browsers
- Internet Explorer and Google Chrome - can get picky, and fail to
display content.  Additionally, spaces and 'extended' characters in path
names can also cause trouble.

I hope this helps.

[Framers] FrameMaker 2017, Update 1 - where is it for direct download?

2017-05-02 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

Has anyone had difficulty downloading FrameMaker 2017 update 1, from the
FrameMaker downloads page?

The table does not appear to detail anything about the download.

I can't use the Adobe Update Manager due to security protocol
restrictions at customer sites.

I tried the link on the "New Downloads" link:
http://supportdownloads.adobe.com/support/downloads/new.jsp
but the web page responds with the line:
Error in obtaining download items, please try again later.

I then decided to try the Downloads Help page:
http://supportdownloads.adobe.com/support/downloads/help.html
and tried the "Unable to connect to the Adobe FTP site" link, which gave
the text "Sorry, this page is unavailable"

I have gathered all the changes in this blog post:

Re: [Framers] Acrobat DC and ... (don't laugh)

2016-01-13 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello Lea [and FrameUsers]

Adobe FrameMaker 8, on Windows 8?
I think FM8 was only QA verified by Adobe on [32 bit] Windows 2000, XP,
and Vista.

Which Acrobat Distiller was installed? Was FrameMaker installed first?

Do any of the PDFs include transparency?
Does the workstation have a Microsoft "Security" suite installed?
such as ForeFront Security? Windows Defender AntiVirus?

I have seen multiple instances where the Microsoft suite of anti-virus
products is rather aggressive and fails to allow Adobe Acrobat to
distill any output that contains transparency areas in PDF documents.
My solution was easy. Add an exception to the AntiVirus suite to not
scan any processes named AcroDist.exe. One of my customer's IT
departments didn't like this workaround, so I recommended that they
change their antivirus suite. They quickly adopted the workaround.

Re: Sourcesafe

2015-06-05 Thread Simon BUCH
Making a manual archive is always a good practice - I would advise doing
this on a twice daily basis so that the files are backed up to a server
in a different location.

Warning: SourceSafe is a discontinued Microsoft package. Even though
SourceSafe can handle any type of file, we experienced some corruptions
when dealing with non-source code, such as document sets, images, etc.
Not good!

Instead, I would recommend switching to use Apache Subversion - AKA: SVN.

Re: Character Format Issue

2015-05-01 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello Kristy,

I would check that there are no other EDD rules imposing particular
formats on the selected element.

To review the element formatting, select FrameMaker menu item:
StructureTools Show Element Context... ; FrameMaker 11 will display
the Show Element Context pane, against which you can select each of
the parent elements in the Element Hierarchy, and review the Format
Rules that are being applied.

Sadly, I find the Show Element Context dialog to be rather useless, as
the Format Rules section of the dialog is a mere 222 pixels wide
[regardless of the size of the pane dock] which truncates any text that
you would normally see in full glory in the EDD file, and the mouse-over
text of each rule is just as useless, being truncated with a suffix of
'...'. I hope that Adobe people will consider making the panes resizeable.

Hi, fellow Framers –

I am working on cleaning up our EDD for our manuals, Frame 11. We have
3 types of alerts (note, caution, warning) that pretty much follow the
same rules, so are set up the same as much as possible. I have the
caution and warning doing exactly what I need them to do with
Autonumber Format as “Caution:” or “Warning:” and the Character Format
as “Bold Underline.” Since I am trying to match (where possible) our
Arbortext DTD and styles, I need the “Note:” to be just Bold.

However, the bold is not showing up. I can change it to everything
else, including Bold DoubleUnderline or Blue, and it displays as
prescribed. Just not plain bold. Spacing all works, nesting/indenting
works fine. What can I be missing?

Also, if you are good at table format structuring and are willing to
answer questions, I am having trouble with those. Right now those are
still just done in my template through table designer with only the
very basic set up in the EDD.

Long change bars are created when a table is in between 2 lines

2015-01-20 Thread Simon BUCH

Greetings from a chilly Scotland,

I have a strange behaviour with change bars which is quite undesirable,
where change bars become excessively long. I found this with a
structured XML document, but the same occurs with unstructured
documents, and the behaviour occurs in FM 10, 11 and 12.

The scenario is a simple unstructured document containing the following:
x a 1
y b 2
z c 3
and a table is added to the end of each of the lines. Select the letter
a, and then select menu item: Format Style Change Bar. The line is
correctly marked with the change bar. But when same action is performed
for the letter b, the change bar is extended between the 'x a 1' line
including the table. Repeat the same for the letter c, and now the
whole document has a change bar!

This is NOT useful, as the table content hasn't been changed - it's just
the lines where the table anchor are located that have changed.
I would have expected just the line to be marked with the change bar -
as the MIF of the document clearly has the table anchor outwith the
'change bar' tagged text.

I can add a line-feed character, or add an extra paragraph before the
table anchor to circumvent the long change bar effect, but my client
does not like this.

Could this be considered a bug?

Re: Removing custom row heights

2014-06-20 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

I would perform the actions on each file:
a. open the document
b. File Save As ; specify MIF format
c. close the document
d. Using a text editor such as NotePad++ [or sed], remove every
line that starts:

RowMinHeight
and/or:
RowMaxHeight
e. save the MIF
f. open the MIF in FrameMaker, and SaveAs FM format

There's probably an extendscript that could automate part of that task.

I am still hunting for HunSpell dictionaries in FrameMaker11...

2014-03-12 Thread Simon BUCH

Dear Framers,

I am on the hunt for learning how to integrate HunSpell dictionaries
into FrameMaker 11, for languages such as Icelandic.

According to the FrameMaker 11 Upgrade Guide:
http://wwwimages.adobe.com/www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/products/framemaker/pdf/FRAMEMAKER11_UPGRADE_GUIDE.PDF
Hunspell dictionary is available, as is Configurable dictionary support.
I guess these features mean that Adobe provides the dictionaries, and
you can select whether you want to want to use the HunSpell, or the
Proximity version dictionaries.

I took a look at the InDesign help page:
http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/add_cs_dictionaries.html
and so I created my is_IS folder in:
C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Adobe\Linguistics\6.2\Providers\Plugins2\AdobeHunspellPlugin\Dictionaries\

and in which I copied my is_IS.aff and is_IS.dic files.
I then added the stringis_IS/string text into the Spelling Service
section of the Info.plist file.

Is there anything I'm missing?
or ... */Does anyone know if it is possible to integrate new HunSpell
dictionaries into FrameMaker11?/*

Opening FM 9 via Remote Desktop crashes

2014-01-24 Thread Simon BUCH
Hello Stephen,

I would hazard a guess that Microsoft terminal services client [AKA
Remote Desktop Connection] is sharing your printers, hard drives, usb
drives, and the Windows clipboard buffer on your local workstation with
your remote machine.

I have seen effects where changing printers and the Windows clipboard
buffer can adversely affect Remote Desktop, so I would recommend running
"mstsc.exe", selecting the "local resources" tab, and changing the
settings to the default connection, or save the settings as a "RDP"
connection profile.

From my previous experience with Adobe's Activation via internet

Although, they do also say this in the FAQ about calling by an IT
Administrator (my bolding below):

*Can I choose not to activate Adobe FrameMaker 12?*
http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/faq.html

Activation of Adobe FrameMaker 12 is required via the Internet to
continue use of the product. Activating your product helps protect
your computer and your environment by ensuring that you are using a
genuine Adobe product. Activating your product has other benefits.
Visit the activation page [ /http://adobe.com/product/activation/
http://www.adobe.com/products/activation/] for more information.
*The machine with FrameMaker 12 installed must connect to the Internet
at least once within 30 days of the first launch of your serialized
product or the product stops working. If you work in a company that
has a firewall that prevents your system from connecting to the
Internet, have your IT administrator contact Customer Service*. The
phone numbers for Customer Service are available at
www.adobe.com/support/contact http://www.adobe.com/support/contact.

Of course, if the IT Administrator has to open a firewall -- even if
temporarily -- rather than just calling to get activation done, I
suspect it will not happen at /some/ sites.

Correct. The cost is charged monthly -- with an annual commitment.
After 30 days, if you cancel, you will be billed 50% of the remaining
contract obligation.

What I meant was that the software checks activation every 30 days ...
presumably, without Internet access, you would have to call every month?

Although the subscription is labeled monthly, it's really a yearly
subscription. As far as I know you have to pay for an entire year ..
that's just the monthly cost if you break it down that way.

Umm, activation via Internet can be circumvented by calling Adobe
and getting an activation from them. I'm pretty sure you can
access the same help material as PDF or AIRHelp on your local
firewalled install (same as it's been for a while now).

FrameMaker 12 released - activation via internet 'hack'

2014-01-16 Thread Simon BUCH
From my previous experience with Adobe's "Activation via internet"
feature, you [the software purchaser] can try contacting Adobe Technical
support

If you supply all your personal and purchase details [software order
number], you will then be directed to download a 'hack' from the Adobe
licensing portal, which after installation will prevent the software
from calling home.

Re: FrameMaker 12 released

2014-01-15 Thread Simon BUCH

I've taken a quick look at this new release.

a. There's still no right-to-left language support.

b. There's still the requirement for activation via internet, and the
help pages reference material on web pages.
This makes the product impractical for customers on military/corporate
grade networks with no internet access.

c. In Kapil VERMA's blog entry, there's a section about Licensing options:
'Furthermore, we are providing both perpetual and subscription
licensing options on all our products. We do realize that the licensing
needs of our customers vary and hence, we are offering both the options
for you. There is also special upgrade pricing available as well as
limited time promotional price for some customers. Please refer to the
product homepages for exact pricing information (links below).'

Really?

Proof reading the Adobe FrameMaker 11 'documentation'?

2013-08-16 Thread Simon BUCH
I have been making some preparations for a work project, and so I've
been trying to gather additional information on FrameMaker 11. So far,
my results have been disappointing.

I want to research on the Hunspell dictionary functionality, but all I
can find is just ONE single reference in the User Guide [and online
Help] to a setting on the Edit Preferences dialog. No further
information at all.

I then decided to read the FrameMaker 11 - Read me.pdf file, which is
part of the FrameMaker 11 trial software package that was downloaded at
the end of June, but there appears to be some confusion:

* FrameMaker 11 - Read me.pdf file - System requirements
http://www.adobe.com/go/framemaker_systemreqs
takes you to the Adobe special Error404 page.
I suspect they meant to say:
http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/systemreqs.html

* FrameMaker 11 - Read me.pdf file - Installation Instructions
For detailed instructions on installation, visit the installation
page: http://www.adobe.com/go/cs_install_instruct_en;

Creative Suite 6 Installation Instructions?
OK. I thought FM11 was part of the TC suite.

* FrameMaker 11 - Read me.pdf file - Trial software
You can convert from a trial to a full version at any time by
either purchasing a copy of the product or signing up for a subscription

Really? No wonder why there's been so much discussion on this list
about the subject.

Where do I find further information on this?

* FrameMaker 11 - Read me.pdf file Known Issues?
http://adobe.com/go/fm_known_issues_en

Adobe special Error404 page again.

So, I'm still none the wiser about Hunspell. Oh well.

I guess you've tried the Adobe Licensing Repair Tool:
http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/licensing.html

I've found that Adobe's licensing is irritating - my latest episode
was while upgrading an installation of Acrobat to the latest version.

For anyone who has any Adobe products that insist on activation by
internet only, I strongly recommend the software purchaser to contact
Adobe Technical support tcs...@adobe.com supplying the required
information [the software order number] so that Adobe can then provide a
software license activation 'hack' that doesn't require the calling home
to Adobe.

Dear Framers,

This is a resend of my previous message - as I suspect the FrameUsers
list doesn't allow for attachments - such as graphics - to be sent.

I've been having a problem with adding FrameMaker structured documents
into a structured book, and I wonder if any of you guys have experienced

the same or similar effect.

FWIW, I'm using FrameMaker 10, running on Windows7 - both with the
latest patches installed.
The files are organised in sub-section documents, such as ENR_3_3_en.fm
being the ENR 3.3 document, and sub-sub-section documents having
additional numbering, such as: ENR_3_3_1_en.fm

If I select a range of documents in an explorer window, and drag the
documents inside the book file, I appear to be able to get the whole
structure of the document messed up.

I dragged the files to be after the ENR_3_3_en.fm document, and before
the ENR_3_4_en.fm document. The book file appears to have the documents
in the correct order ENR_3_3_en.fm, followed by ENR_3_3_1_en.fm,
ENR_3_3_2_en.fm, ENR_3_3_3_en.fm, etc. but the structure view shows that

they are located /after/ the ENR_3_5_en.fm document!

The effect of adding these documents gets even stranger when I noticed
that the ENR_3_4_en.fm, ENR_3_5_en.fm, and ENR_3_6_en.fm - which /were/
in the correct order /before /the drag-drop function, are somehow
reversed.

If I try rearranging some of the files in the structure view window, I
have seen FrameMaker crash a few times.

I managed to add the files in the correct order by:
a. move the insertion pointer in the structure view
b. select the FrameMaker Add Files... menu item
c. In the Add Files to book dialog, with the details being shown:
reserve the Name sort order in the Windows dialog, so it shows Z -
A ordering
d. select the second file in the reversed order [e.g. the y file]
e. shift-select the last file in the reversed order [e.g. the a file]
f. control-select the first file in the reversed order [e.g. the z
file]
... but even with this, I found that FrameMaker added the files into the

book 2 elements /after/ where I had moved the insertion pointer.

Has anyone else observed these behaviours before?

ENR_3_3_2_en.fm, ENR_3_3_3_en.fm, etc. but the structure view shows that
they are located /after/ the ENR_3_5_en.fm document!

The effect of adding these documents gets even stranger when I noticed
that the ENR_3_4_en.fm, ENR_3_5_en.fm, and ENR_3_6_en.fm - which /were/
in the correct order /before /the drag-drop function, are somehow reversed.

If I try rearranging some of the files in the structure view window, I
have seen FrameMaker crash a few times.

I managed to add the files in the correct order by:
a. move the insertion pointer in the structure view
b. select the FrameMaker Add Files... menu item
c. In the Add Files to book dialog, with the details being shown:
reserve the Name sort order in the Windows dialog, so it shows Z -
A ordering

d. select the second file in the reversed order [e.g. the y file]
e. shift-select the last file in the reversed order [e.g. the a file]
f. control-select the first file in the reversed order [e.g. the z file]
... but even with this, I found that FrameMaker added the files into the
book 2 elements /after/ where I had moved the insertion pointer.

Has anyone else observed these behaviours before?

Adding structured files into a book yields the wrong order in the structure

2013-07-29 Thread Simon BUCH

Re: FM11 license under parallels and bootcamp

2013-07-10 Thread Simon BUCH

Hoi Wim,

Isn't it ironic that Adobe has a product that can create military
standard documents, but have such a dreadful software activation system,
it means that the software can't easily be used on a military or closed
IP network. I understand the need for software licensing and activation,
but it would have been so much easier if Adobe provided an automated
telephone system.

Adobe force their FrameMaker users to activate their product - which
means that you must have an active internet connection at least once
within 30 days of the first launch of the serialized product. The
software tries [silently] to connect to the Internet for the first seven
days after the first launch of the product for activation. If the
software has not activated within the first seven days, you will receive
a reminder for the next 23 days on every launch that the machine must
connect to the Internet and activate the software. As soon as the
software detects an Internet connection, it will silently activate the
product.

Here are some of the Adobe technical information notes about the activation:
http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/faq.html#bodycontent1-faq_5b17-55_1288829090882
http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/systemreqs.html

I read the Adobe Forum thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/827071
which lead me to contact Adobe Technical support via email:
tcs...@adobe.com ; where I indicated the nature of the problem. I then
received a telephone call from their support operation where I repeated
the same information, and after a while, the support agent indicated
that Adobe *can* supply a special licensing [hack!] tool which removes
the requirement for activation.

I recommend contacting Adobe to get them to supply this special
licensing tool, but to action this, Adobe require you to provide the
precise license key and software order number to be able to create the
tool - customised for your installation, which you then need to download
via the Adobe Software licensing portal. It took a few days to get this
done.

Good luck!

A strange 'debug' message, while using FrameMaker 10

2013-05-14 Thread Simon BUCH

Does anyone on the list ever receive strange error messages from FrameMaker?

I was in the middle of importing PDF files to layout in a structured
FrameMaker document into FrameMaker 10.0.2.419 [or more accurately,
10.0.3.419] and I happened to receive the attached error message Debug
assertion failed, with reference to:

F:\dd\vctools\vc7libs\ship\atlmfc\src\atl\atls\atldebugapi.cpp

I don't even have Visual C++ installed on my machine!

Can anyone enlighten me with the meaning of it?

Re: PDF Import

2013-04-17 Thread Simon BUCH

Brad,

I have found in the past that some anti-virus suites can be overzealous
and serious affect printing. The worst offender is Microsoft Security
Essentials, where printing FrameMaker documents that contain referenced
PDF files takes a significantly long time.

You might want to try adding a process exclusion to your anti-virus
product to ignore FrameMaker.exe, and AcroDist.exe too.

When I switched the antivirus product [from MS security to AVG
professional] on the offending machine, printing those documents was
achievable.

YMMV.

The latest try is a 200+ page document (with roughly 6 thumbnail PDF pages per
page). It took all weekend ( 48 hours to create a PS file). The PostScript file failed
to distill. I'm curious what can speed up the process and make it less likely to fail.

Converting several hundred pages of PDF files to a different format is not a
good option here also because of time and maintenance.

Re: Save as PDF hangs FrameMaker 11, with PDF cover art

2013-03-07 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello Shelly,

Are you perhaps using Microsoft Security Essentials [MSE] on your
workstation?

I have found from experience with customers that the Microsoft
Anti-virus Solution is way too aggressive, and was causing FrameMaker
and/or Acrobat Distiller to hand while attempting to print any graphics
that contained transparency areas.

If your company has a different Anti-virus suite available, I recommend
uninstalling MSE, and switching.

If you don't have that option, you will need to configure MSE to exclude
processes FrameMaker.exe, and Acrobat.exe, and perhaps add folder
exclusion too.

Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution that won't

I finally found that I can save the cover art as eps with a preview,
and get an excellent quality pdf using the eps art. Yay! And the
preview prevents Frame from displaying eps files as those off-putting
gray boxes, so I'll use that if necessary.

Thank you!!

Re: OT: Corrupt .docx file

2013-02-07 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello Pat,

IF your file really is a Microsoft .DOCX format file, you should be able
to unzip the content of the file using an unarchiver utility like 7zip
[on Windows]. You will get a few folders, including one named 'word',
inside of which you will find a 'document.xml' file. You might be able
to rescue the content if you know how to modify the XML file.

I've found that sometimes Microsoft products indicate they are writing
out as the XML based formats [docx, xslx, etc.] but don't!

Good luck!

I have a Word .docx file that won't open. I discovered that there's an XML- and

I've done a lot of research online and tried every converter and rebuilder I

Can anyone recommend someone who can get into this and fix the XML? Preferably,

The Zapfdingbats Font Family is not available. (Was: Updating older versions of Adobe fonts? Slightly off-topic, but related in a way!)

2013-01-21 Thread Simon BUCH

Dear Craig,

I experienced this same issue as my company's product reads in *alot* of
XML content, and one of the customers panics whenever they see _any_
FrameMaker 'console' messages.

The mapping appears to be made in an entity formats document:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker10\Structure\entfmts
which has a rather historic comment that FrameMaker+SGML copies
character formats and user variables from this file while importing
SDATA entities from SGML documents.

This isn't the first occurrence of where Adobe ships files that
reference fonts that are no longer supplied, and probably won't be the last.

Your points are well taken, but a problem I had with the Adobe PI substitution
was that simple bullets were coming across as question marks in my PDFs. That
would indicate a mapping problem that is pretty obvious.

Also, you might want to tell the Framemaker team that whenever I open a new
DITA document in FrameMaker I get the following messages in the FrameMaker
console:

The Zapfdingbats Font Family is not available.
Adobe Pi Std will be used in this session.
The Zapfdingbats Regular Font is not available.
AdobePiStd will be used in this session.

If Adobe Pi Std is not a problem, maybe they should update the DITA templates
for the next release and remove the source of this error. That is, unless
Zapf-Dingbats is somehow part of the DITA standard (which really can't be
true). The fewer the error messages the more likely we are to see critical
errors.

Thanks for all your insights.

Re: Table that won't sort correctly: wash-up

2012-12-10 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello,

I suspect the effect that you may be observing is Microsoft's handling
of some multibyte characters, where they get mutated to the Unicode
replacement character '' U+FFFD - which appears to happen very often
when content is imported or pasted into FrameMaker from Microsoft word.

The character is not shown in FrameMaker, but if the file is exported to
XML or HTML, it is rendered as a question mark in a rhombus diamond
symbol: - as shown on the web page:

http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/fffd/index.htm
Some browsers and applications display it as a hollow box character.

If you know the exact position of one of the errant character in the
FrameMaker document, you can select the single character by using the
cursor keys, and press the delete key. For some document I found it was
possible to select Select Edit Find/Change... ; specify text to find
as: \x0d ; and then click Change All.

To recap, I had a large table whose first column contained entries of the form

In the MIF, quite a lot of the first column entries were of the form:

   ParaLine
 String `['
 String `]'
# end of ParaLine

In other words, the '[]' entry consisted of two separate but adjacent
strings. This messed up the sort. The only visible evidence of this on the
screen was that it took one more right-cursor movement to advance from the
start of the line to past the '[' as expected. Also, the wildcard pattern '^['
didn't get a match.

Clearly one of the things that FrameMaker does when parsing MIF is to spot
adjacent strings like this and concatenate them. Useful to know. Why the text
came out of Word like this is another question altogether. But with Word, who
knows?

Hello Rick,

Latvian is: Latviešu
Slovenian is: Slovenščina, whereas Slovenčina is Slovakian. Subtly
different.
Hrvatski is the Serbo-Croatian language, as spoken by Croats mainly in
Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Serbian province of Vojvodina and
other neighbouring countries.

Macedonian? Do you mean the Former Yugoslave Republic of Macedonia
[Македонија] - more commonly referred to as FYROM?

FrameMaker 10 does not have Serbian language српски, which when
written in 'Latin' letters is: srpski.

For Serbian and Macedonian languages, I recommend setting the paragraph
tag Language setting to be None, so that FrameMaker can ignore the spelling.

Hello,

I know from experience that FrameMaker still doesn't support
right-to-left text, but I was wondering if there's anyone out there who
have managed to work with bi-directional text publications with
FrameMaker. Or would you err towards other document handling solutions
that can handle PDF and XML outputs?

RE: How to enter Unicode Character in FrameMaker 10?

2011-08-25 Thread Simon BUCH
There is a Windows input method to 'type' Unicode characters, using the
numeric pad to type the unicode hex number.

Steps required:
1. You'll need to enable the Windows 'hex numpad' option.
As there's no user interface option for this [AFAIK], you'll need to
modify the Windows registry:
1a. Click Start Run and launch the registry editor: RegEdit.exe
1b. Navigate to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Input Method]
1c. Locate the key named EnableHexNumpad.
If there isn't one, use the right mouse menu to create a new
string value with the type REG_SZ
1d. Double-click the EnableHexNumpad key to give it a value of 1
1e. Close RegEdit.

2. Reboot. Because it's Windows.

3. Log back in, and then you can then start inserting Unicode characters
- if you know their hex code.
For example: Hold down your Left-Alt key, and then on the numeric pad:
press +
press 2
press 1
press 9
press 2
and then release the Alt key. You will how have a right-arrow.
Hex a to f is done using your main keyboard.

NOTE: I'm not certain if this still works in Windows 7, but knowing
Microsoft they'll still support it in the same way that you can't have
specific file names, such as: con.doc ; prn.txt ; aux.html etc. still!

By reading the Wikipedia page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode_input#In_Microsoft_Windows
... I discovered that Microsoft have a 'RichEdit' mode in some
applications, which will allow a user to type a number, followed by
Alt+x - but it appears that Adobe / FrameMaker do not support that.

As there's no user interface option for this [AFAIK], you'll need to
modify the Windows registry:
1a. Click Start > Run and launch the registry editor: RegEdit.exe
1b. Navigate to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Input Method]
1c. Locate the key named "EnableHexNumpad".

RE: Finding standard (non-smart) quote, apostrophe

2011-07-18 Thread Simon BUCH

Dear Tim,

There's two possible workarounds:
1. Change the occurrances of your 'prime' symbol to be the real Unicode prime ′
(U+2032) or double prime ″ (U+2033) characters. Hopefully you'll be using a
Unicode font that covers such mathematical symbols.

2. If you've got content that you don't want to be included in the spell
checker, you can set the paragraph/character tag's language to be: None.

OK, here's a follow-up: I'm going through this document more than a year
after I wrote it and I suddenly realize why I'm having this problem with
non-smart apostrophes: I HAD to turn smart quotes off because my text,
which is very technical, includes terms that contain the prime symbol,
which is a tic or non-smart apostrophe.

So I guess now I'm stuck. I'm not changing the primes to apostrophes.

Oh well.

Ant - I seem to recall that the default paper sizes are stored in the
printer driver settings, and remember that Windows printer drivers have
3 locations where the 'default' is defined!

1. Select the Adobe PDF printer, then right mouse click and select
Properties
2. Click Printing Preferences button, and the Adobe PDF printing
preferences will appear
3. Modify the settings and click OK
4. Click the Advanced tab, then Printing defaults button. The 'Adobe

5. Modify the settings and click OK
6. Click the device settings tab, and then select the Form to tray
assignment
7. Shutdown and reboot Windows [probably not required, but hey, it's

I think we should petition Adobe so that if they decide to sell us 'UK
English' versions of the software, then the software should come
pre-defined with UK English default settings.

avoid using characters that have special meaning on some

avoid using very long filenames
avoid using very long pathnames
remember some operating systems are CaSe SeNsItIvE

The most important rule to remember is:

2010-06-17 Thread Simon BUCH
Hello,

I have had similar problems with documents, importing PNG graphics that
were colour depth of 24 bit or 32bit RGB - which would occasionally give
your error message, but most often would often silently crash
FrameMaker!

If my memory serves me well, I think the problematic PNG files had been
created by Adobe Illustrator.

As the graphics were grayscale, I simply reduced the palette to 8 bit,
and saved as PNG. My favourite [Windows] application for simple
changes to graphics has to be Irfanview - small, simple, and doesn't
even need to be installed.

RE: reversed text style

2010-05-18 Thread Simon BUCH
Hello,

I would err against using a 'reverse' font, as I've found they are often
limited to a small subset of characters, and can sometime cause problems
when sending to print.

I would recommend Art Campbell's suggestion, of using a table with a
fill setting. This way, the document can use the regular prescribed
font - which can assist situations where a document has to be translated
for a multi-language interfaces.

If I were you, I'd either:
 * Create graphics for them, store each graphic in a referenced frame on
a
Reference page and pull them in with a set of unique paragraph tags.
Or
 * Set up a single-cell table, set the cell background to black and
create a
paragraph tag with the font set to white. And I'd hang the table from a
special Anchor paragraph tag that you only use for that purpose, so you
can
control the placement precisely.

Cheers,
Art

RE: reversed text style

2010-05-18 Thread Simon BUCH
Hello Dick,

If you're wanting to keep the 'reverse' text inside a line of text, you'll
probably want to make them into drawn graphics on one of the reference pages,
or import them as GIF/PNG graphics, and then paste them into your document,
using anchored frames.

I am a stickler for simplicity in documents, and I've found that putting
instructions in paragraphs can lead to confusion for some users. For example:
I've seen some documents (where [0] is a button graphic) which have
instructions like:
To get back to the menu, Press [0] [0] [0].
... and I've seen some trainees diligently type: 000.

Hope that helps

Hi Simon,

The idea of installing a new typeface would be the most straight forward and
simple solution if not that I too foresee printing problems. So after reading
Rick's suggestion (which makes good sense: I didn't think of it!) I decided to
rule that option out.

Back to Art Campbell's suggestion: if you do use a single cell table with black
background, how do you then keep it in line with the remainder of the text like
you can with an anchored frame? (Tables have no at insertion point anchoring
position, anchored frames do.) Note that I am talking about a single word
somewhere in the paragraph, not an entire paragraph.
