[Audyssey] Later PCS DOS Games (was Re: the SOD beginnings - Re: Q)
Hey, Reading back on issues of audyssey I remember PCS had a lot of more complex maze-type games out. David Greenwood did Lone Wolf back in 1998, but PCS had a Pac-Man game, Tank Game, Cops N' Robbers game (I'm not sure if I'm making that one up) and everything. I remember playing Fox N' Hounds when I was 7; that was a very early map-based game with no directional sound or anything. Anyway did anyone ever get into those versions of Pac-Man? Listening to the sounds I can tell things were just panned out beforehand because there was no way to pan sounds in DOS. Did people really get into these? There were a lot of them. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Blastbay Studios - Upcoming release!
Hi all, I'd like to begin by wishing all of you a merry Christmas, and to inform you that this year our old friend Santa Claus is in major trouble. >From the inner depths of the Blastbay workshop emerges our latest free game >called Kringle Crash. Santa's elves are not particularly pleased with their >working conditions and so they want to put the grand old man in his place once >and for all. He does not go willingly, though, and Kringle Crash is the >result. You have to try and recover all of the gifts and put them on your >sleigh, as well as try to prevent the elves from happily chucking the presents >into a massive garbage disposal unit. All of this has to be done in just four >minutes of super intensive action. The game features an original soundtrack as well as professional acting and sound effects. A sneak preview is now available. However, I did not do particularly well... Can I blame it on the fact that it was 05:30 in the morning? Hi James, If he did write a Dos prototype it was never released to my knoledge. Besides that by 1999 and 2000 Dos was effectively the Dead Operating System. Most people, definitely me, were using Windos instead of Dos. Well, I was using older versions of Linux too, but it wasn't accessible then like it is today. Re: [Audyssey] Doom of DOS
Hi Phil, Not only that but keep in mind that Dos and the early Windows releases were 16 byt operating systems. When 95 came out Microsoft moved to a completely 32 byt operating system forcing developers not only to upgrade, but to convert their programs to 32 byt as well. They completely dumped a bunch of Windows 3.x era APIs in favor of the Win32 API which has become the Windows standard ever since. It was a major leap for the times and we are seeing the same thing when we compare Windows XP and the new 64 byt versions of Windows 7. At any rate Windows 95 completely revolutionized the PC game industry. Not only our sector, but the entire mainstream market was transformed. The Introduction of DirectX saw a massive leap in graphics technology, better sound support, a wider selection of game controllers, you name it. Using Dos for games was in a word just plane dumb after 95 hit the scene. Nobody wanted to go back. P.S. I still love using cout or printf to write text directly to the screen. Saves a lot of work drawing your own full screen window just for a simple application. Cheers! Phil Vlasak wrote: Hi Jim, Yeah, Shades of doom was also the doom of the DOS game. Re: [Audyssey] speculative html game programming
Hi Dark, Well, for the type of game you are thinking of you wouldn't actually write the game in html. The game itself would be written in some sort of web based scripting language like perl, php, Javascript, and the html would be used to link the various scripts together and obviously display the text on screen. However, the game mechanics, as it were, would all be done in your script language of choice. Various settings, user stats, etc would be stored on your server in something like a MySQL database which requires a third language SQL to actually write the database for storing your values. Re: [Audyssey] the SOD beginnings - Re: Q
Hi Charles and all, I hope Michael Feir will excuse me for reprinting the beginning of Shades of Doom from, Audyssey; Computer Games Accessible to the Blind Issue 18: May/June/July, 1999 From David Greenwood: Michael, I have an idea which could be carried out on the Audyssey mail list and reported on an ongoing basis in the Audyssey Magazine. I thought it may be fun and interesting to design and develop a game using ideas from the Audyssey mail list members. We could present a basic game scenario and encourage the mail list participants to provide interactive feedback. I manage an Information Systems department for a medium sized international company and we have used JADD, Joint Application Design and Development, to develop many systems. It seems to work well in most cases. I would find it interesting, both professionally and as a Gamer, to head up this project. How it might work - I will present the initial scenario and some ideas on how the user interface might work. I will then sit back and wait for feedback. Mail list participants can comment on each other's ideas and when things settle down I will prepare a summary of our design to date. This summary may need to be a questionnaire with each participant voting on opinions which can't be agreed on. I will then go away and develop a proto-type. Each participant will then down-load the proto-type and the mail list discussion will continue for another round. This may be an iteractive process which may go on for several months. Each participant will obtain a free copy of the final game, and PCS will then be free to sell it as one of their commercial games. I would suggest it could be sold to all other Audyssey subscribers at a somewhat reduced price, say $$15, but this must be discussed with PCS first. A Scenario suggestion - The game could be loosely based on the highly graphical and popular "Doom". You find yourself in a maze of tunnels. From a distance you here the sounds of approaching monsters. From the volume and direction of the sounds, you can decide to run or attack. You must find a way to the next level of the maze while collecting weapons, ammunition, and receiving points for killing monsters. You initially start off with a single shot rifle an 30 rounds of ammunition. Hidden in each level of the maze is a more powerful weapon which you will want since the monsters get a little tougher the farther you go. The sound will be continuous allowing you to walk, run, or shoot regardless of the sound playing. You will always shoot in the direction you are walking, but the skill will be deciding on how much ammunition to use and how close you will allow the monster to come before shooting. Fast reflexes will also come into play. You will also need to be careful of monsters lurking around corners. Each level will contain different monsters with different abilities. You can identify the monster by its sound. There will be boulders to move, doors to find, pitfalls to avoid, and other things we can decide on later. I believe this game can provide the same entertainment value that Doom or Wolfenstein delivers. What do you think? Hi Charles, I am sure Shades Of Doom was a windows game from the beginning. David's Lone Wolf and Star Trek 2000 started as DOS games. SOD came in 5 parts as no one back then had high speed downloads and he wanted the dial up download to not last all day. smiles, Phil - Original Message - From: "Charles Rivard" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Saturday, December 19, 2009 11:54 PM Subject: [Audyssey] the SOD beginnings - Re: Q As I recall, SOD was comprised of 4 files that you installed in sequence. [Audyssey] Doom of DOS, was Triple J Shooter
Hi Jim, Yeah, Shades of doom was also the doom of the DOS game. Me and Carl were happy creating DOS games for the blind just like you were, then Shades of Doom came along and all we heard from customers was do your games work with Windows! Come to think of it Windows 95 was the doom of games for DOS. And when Carl tried to convert one of our DOS games to Windows, he got so many errors he decided it wasn't worth the effort and stopped. Of course, back then in 1999 Carl didn't have windows 95 or a windows 95 screen reading program, so not only was he trying to write game for an operating system he didn't know, he was using a screen reader that he was not comfortable with. Re: [Audyssey] speculative html game programming
Hellow, I know HTML, but haven't really managed to learn PHP or Javascript yet because my laptop is being a ... when it comes to running a server of any kind, although it is more powerful than most so it should work fine. Anyway, I'd say probably use Javascript obviously along with HTML to make an online game, but you can use PHP if you only want stuff to be displayed on the page rather than use text, sound and pictures/videos. Probably doesn't make much sense, but still. Re: [Audyssey] Naive C++ Questions
Hi Jim, Well, my biggest problem with .NET wasn't the languages or the .NET Framework so much as Managed DirectX. It doesn't ship with Windows, and nor does Microsoft plan to make it a core component since DirectSound and the older DirectX libraries are on their way out anyway. So I constantly had to help users get that installed. However, Managed DirectX isn't a game developer's only option here. There are free and open source projects like SdlDotNet which would be perfectly fine for your games or SlimDX. There are some commercial audio libraries out there like FMOD Ex and Irrklang. Either way DirectX really isn't necessary these days to create a good game. It is just that people have gotten so use to having DirectX they don't know their alternatives. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Naive C++ Questions
Hi Jim, Yeah, the basic programming languages have evolved quite a lot over the years as has everything else. Microsoft's Visual Basic project was a smash hit with a lot of average people as it took most of the difficulty out of programming complex programs quickly and as simply as possible. When Microsoft began shipping VB 6 libraries with DirectX 7 and DirectX 8 a lot of average home users began using Visual Basic for creating their own games. Unfortunately, as the demands for higher specifications, features, etc were introduced Visual Basic 6 and even directX itself were not able to meet the demands of bleeding edge software development. For example, in 1995 when DirectX was released Microsoft had intended the API to be a simple interface for various sound cards, video cards, and handle various input devices through one single API. Well, as time went on and computers got better game development companies wanted to have the ability to draw better 3d graphics, produce realistic 3d audio environments, support more advanced controllers, etc. Microsoft made these upgrades to DirectX, but the primary design was for a Windows 95/98 era computer. As a result in 2005 when Microsoft was designing the XBox 360 and Windows Vista they realized the current DirectX architecture was far passed its prime, no longer could meet todays demands for high end video games, and so they started over with a completely new DirectX API called XNA that will replace DirectX eventually. In 2007 when the early releases of the XNA libraries were released they began dropping support for older libraries like DXVB8.dll, the Managed DirectX libraries, and moved their C++ versions to the legacy branch of the API. As a result their new libraries are much more advanced and a lot more high end than the old Windows 95/98 era of DirectX ever could hope to be. With XAudio2 it goes far beyond simple panning or the concept of using 3d buffers for audio. It now gives the developer the control to have a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound setup. Improved dsp effects using audio graphs. The ability to split stereo sounds into separate channels and play each channel back differently. The ability to submix multiple sound sources in order to create a dynamic sound played in real time. I could go on and on, but the point is they've really been working on a totally new sound and video architecture for Windows Vista and Windows 7 that blows earlier releases of Windows and DirectX away. Anyway, during the same basic time period your beloved Visual Basic 6 was also being scrapped. Not because Visual Basic 6 was no good, but was becoming outdated. Businesses wanted all of the rich abilities and features of languages like Java that were quick to design, that were fully portable, and was something like the Visual Basic they knew and loved. Microsoft accordingly came out with Visual Basic .NET in 2002 and have got glowing praise from the business community for it. Once that happened Visual Basic 6 went into the trash heap a long with a lot of their older technologies when Vista and Windows 7 came out. Re: [Audyssey] Naive C++ Questions
Hi Thomas, Yeah, I have heard else where that VB Net is popular in the business community. Thank you for the suggestion for me to check out the Learning Visual Basic .NET from book share. I was really just curious, doubt that I will switch languages for my games. I mean just installing my WinKit.zip file gives all of the libraries necessary to run my games. Much better I think than all of the Net stuff like I think that you have found out. I am curious about all of the different programming languages even though I will probably stay with VB6. Basic has changed over the years. I mean, I remember when Basic had peek and poke. And I used to draw pictures by redefining the character set. Almost like braille in that a I think was lighting up the first cell. D was lighting up all of the first four. So ad would be the first cell and three not lit and the last four lit. It was 30 years ago, so I may have that wrong. I know that it went from 0 to 9 and a to f or something like that. One of the pictures that I drew was the Star Ship Enterprise for my first version of Star Mule. It was cool, it had running lights, flashing lights, lettering etc. I over wrote it by accident in a second with the code for the game by giving it the wrong or same file name. But then in 1999 - 2000 David Greenwood was working on the first accessable first person shooter game. He asked on list for suggestions and comments. It became a group effert. Every since then it is like all accessible games are group efferts. Not that it is all bad, I mean I have added lots of features and tweeks to my games from the suggestions of others. Oh yeah that game by the way was Shades of Doom. BFN Jim Predestination was doomed from the start. j...@kitchensinc.net http://www.kitchensinc.net (440) 286-6920 Chardon Ohio USA --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] help finding games for deaf/mtion impaired
Hello. Well I should know from first hand what playing as a Deaf-blind gamer is like. For one, the game would have to be able to use the braille display, second it can't be too complex. Mainly due that most deaf blind folks depending on if they ever seen or hear will not hve the clue on the concept of most games. For me, I've seen, and heard in my lifetime which has been short. *grin* I'm only thirty two. Anyhow. I've play games since the commador days up to the 360 xbox. i've even did some basic programming for a time as well. But, ever since I went deaf and lost all my vision, I've had to rely on braille to play games. Only games I've been able to play is Srwith, Kingdom of Loaf and all in play. Not tried Chee card games yet. Far as action goes that would be a hard game to even get a person who never seen or hear in their life to understand. Luckly I have hearing once in a while and found out I wil be able to get those copular implants I might be able to play more sound type games. though I enjoy playing Dominos, paper card games, and several other type hands on games as long as you got good communication with the person your playing it can be fun. But that is just me.. I understand what alot of game terminologys are. So a RPG that is all text that uses the braille display would be your best bet if you are to make a game for anyone to play. I know the VIP that GMA games came out with is not any good for me to play. Mainly cause of the fact you have to type every little thing to do something and no blind deaf person I know of is going to sit there for hours doing that. Re: [Audyssey] help finding games for deaf/mtion impaired
Sounds a cool idea. There are a couple of deafblind mailing lists, but not specifically related to games. I have a suggestion for hard-of-hearing folks like me who have a hard time with surround sound. Maybe there could be a conversion alternative for an action-packed game that could use time reaction challenges instead of knowing directly where the sound is coming from. For example, if a monster is chasing you, you would normally dodge it knowing which way it's headed. But in my conversion, it would be just a matter of timing, like I have to decide quickly what action to take before time runs out and I get killed.
