hi, with jaws and outlook 2003, which is one of two email clients I am currently using to some degree (2003 is my main while wlm serves for some other accounts) I just shift tab into the folders list, and then arrow up or down to what I am looking for, when I open I am automatically in my main mail inbox so its shift tab, then down arrow down a couple boxes (I have a stock one named journal then the junk folder) then (*remember to*) hit enter, then hit tab into the folder (note 2, if you just tab into the box without hitting enter on the folder first, you will wind up still looking at the list of files for the inbox you left, its a folder oddity of outlook as compared to normal folder operations) HTH, de elf -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of David Ingram Sent: Friday, May 17, 2013 4:57 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Is there a way to check to see if i have a junk mailbox in outlook express? Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 14 Key To Announce The Screen Location
hmmm, ok another possible problem is that when a webpage comes up, it is auto highlighted by the jaws/mouse cursor by it (done in the scripts) running in a mouse click and hold fashion from the top, to the bottom of the page, and then the pc cursor follows it down, so where the pc cursor says is not always accessible to jaws due to the clickable area is that is which is shown on screen and jaws has been parked off screen and the pc cursor may or may not be on screen, a real headache setup for something like what your trying to do. a simple thing that might... help is to stop the reading, move to the spot you desire to click with the pc cursor (I usually put it, a few lines from the bottom of the viewable area) , refresh the screen with insert and escape, then move jaws to pc, move the jaws cursor onto the item manually, and hit the left click button. another item that might work is a scripter's application called hot spot clicker, as I follow it, I believe its used to determine exactly where to click something to activate it (mostly used in the more graphical item screens of programs but may well work here due to the type of item that your talking about). a third thought, is that many of these types of items have an unidentified icon in them so are not noticed by the usual named icons only of jaws normal settings. so it may just sit there and look at you funny (a whimsical way of saying something like your encountering), and not be properly recognized by jaws as something to pay attention to, (yes I have dealt with pages with such things on them), so temp turn your graphics to view all and see if graphics wise it doesn't at least show up more correctly, refresh the screen, and then try to jaws to it and left mouse click it. Also JAWS does not say clickable. For example, on the site www.amtrak.com, there is an item that reads status. It's not a link or graphic and dot indicated as clickable. You can find it by reading with the virtual cursor or with JAWS find. But pressing enter or space does nothing. So I route JAWS to PC and left click, but again nothing happens. Re: [JAWS-Users] My experience with a Windows 8 Microsoft Surface Proand JAWS
thank you for this review, a friend of mine was shouting the virtues of the surface, and had me partially interested, but he voiced no flaws or differences, so again, thanks for the reality check. elf -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Eric Damery Sent: Wednesday, May 08, 2013 11:50 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] My experience with a Windows 8 Microsoft Surface Proand JAWS Hello all, In my continued search for a really great Windows 8 Tablet PC, I got the MS Surface Pro. With it, I purchased the $130 keyboard that Microsoft sells with it as an upgrade. I must say, I had very high hopes for this device and to be honest, the Surface itself is excellent. Great battery life, even though it is a bit slow to charge. Very quick, especially the boot up which is about 10 to 15 seconds max. It has a 128 Solid State Drive and I got a 64 Gig micro card to plug in the side. The speakers are not great but I have a jam box and it paired up very nicely. JAWS installs and runs without any issues. I have JAWS 14 release and I'm also doing testing hear at the office with JAWS 15 of course, which I'll be showing at the summer conventions and we'll get released to Public Beta about September 1st. So you might ask, what is the problem... The Keyboard is terrible for a keyboard user, especially one trying to drive a screen reader. For just typing a document, it is very nice. Good feel to the keys for a thin add-on keyboard cover and the spacing is very nice, but it ends there. I find 4 issues that will force me to return this setup to Amazon. 1. The FN key is two keys to the right of the spacebar rather than on the left side. 2. The Function Keys F1 - F12 all require the FN key and there is no way to switch it so the F1 - F12 could work without the FN key. 3. There is no Insert Key so you must use Laptop Layout with CapsLock as the JAWS key, which would be OK if the FN key was on the left side also I guess. Just to get a Links List requires great coordination using CapsLock + FN + F7. 4. Finally, the Space Bar is extended left, half way across the X key on the keyboard. My other laptop keyboards have always ended the spacebar at the C and then an ALT key so my thumb just drops onto the ALT nicely when needed. With this one, I'm pressing SpaceBar all the time. Now granted, if number 4 was the only issue, I would adjust but the first 3, make it impossible for me to consider and I decided to write this because lots of people are considering looking at these new devices and before you plunk down $1000 to $1200 on one of these, I figured this could be helpful in avoiding a mistake. Again, I had such high hopes for this MS Surface. But I have not given up my search either. I'll find something yet. BTW, I still am using the Toshiba Protégé 835 UltraBook I bought last year and love it. But it doesn't have a touch screen and people want to see that working this year so I'm continuing my search. no, the auto install software means that it has a program on it that is supposed to assist you with using your drive effectively, such as a automated backup program and/or its users manuals. its not something I would wish for since I do not want to have to tell my drive no, as I said before, I do not want that when I plug it in and/or turn it on. plug and play items are ones that you plug it in it beeps and loads the drivers it needs and your ready to use it. take care, inthaneelf -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of DGCNC Sent: Tuesday, April 30, 2013 4:42 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws-compatible Terabites What that means I think is that if you buy a however many terrabyte external drive, you plug it into a usb port and the computer and your external drive do what is needed for them to talk to each other without you having to do anything like run some program. ah, now you have cleared things up, most of us probably haven't herd of that particular drive so you need to be more clear in your questions, which is what David was trying to tell you I work in the hardware industry and have never herd of that drive. for the main part you would be easier to use windows explorer to move data, or a backup program that you know is accessible. Microsoft sync toy works, Karen's replacator works good for non-operating system data copying, and just copying and pasting the various folders from the computer to the drive works alright as well, if you don't mind doing the work by hand. Re: [JAWS-Users] Music transfer?
with most CD's you will need an intervening step, since files on professional CD's are in .cda and players can use several but not that one. now then you could setup a CD ripping program to take, convert and transfer them to the player, and move the rip to setting when necessary. I normally rip to my computer, so I have a copy of the songs I want, and then move the ripped mp3's to my backup server/drives and my player, but I do know that I could set up my ripper, CDEX to rip, convert and place them on another drive (which your player will register as). if your working with an iPod you will need to do the three stage transfer though, most rippers will require this to move from .cda to .m4a. inthane -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Dan McCurley Sent: Saturday, April 27, 2013 10:06 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Music transfer? Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws cursor not following PC cursor
the trouble is you missed a step, on a webpage you need to stop the auto read of the page, then update the page (the trick they use for the page reading is to cause the pc cursor to move from top to bottom of the page in a read all type manover, and cause the virtual to follow, thus you start the reading and keep going down the page, to get things lined up you need to stop the auto read, make sure your virtual cursor is on the correct spot, refresh the screen (insert and escape) and then do the route jaws to pc. this doesn't always get you where you wanted to go, dynamic pages are notorious for making things extremely hard to get at now a days, but if the thing is accessible at all, then this is the way to get at it. the person who was saying that definitely didn't read your message correctly since I saw that the first time. I will check this out for myself tomorrow, I have the ability to update to 14, and I have a comp that is still running windows XP (actually 2, but one is easily fixable). On the same computer where you have Jaws installed where you can't copy to the clipboard from within OE, have you tried loaded a demo of another screen-reader such as Window-eyes 7.5 or 8.1, or NVDA? Can you copy to the clipboard using one of those screen-readers? Re: [JAWS-Users] Pass wording Folders/Files
there are a couple encryption applications that are useable to encrypt anything from a file to an entire drive depending on what you want. the most well used of these that I know of is truecrypt(you will have to google the address), although pass wording with applications like WinRar and the built in file pass wording abilities of Microsoft office work, as in you can't open the file without getting the password, its far far harder to unencrypt a file done in truecrypt, than to crack open a .rar, or MS Office locked file. hmmm, a question, in windows 7 many menus and lists of files were showing up as a virtual table, with rows and columns, and you had to navigate them with all four arrow keys to see all that was there, the control panel is one of these and so are other selection lists in it. Re: [JAWS-Users] transferring files, documents, folders and programs
hmmm, your getting a lot of the normal's, there are a couple more depending on stores around you, your budget and other such things. an awkward but useful method is to use data DVD's, more room than a CD and although permanent, you will then have a permanent copy of all your present data. another one is, and only if you have firewire on at least one of them (we could hope for both) you can get a (specialty) patch cord for firewire and a firewire adaptor for any computer that doesn't have it, that can be used for a fast computer to computer transfer. if you do not have a network (about the fastest method, although the external drive also gives you a backup drive with files on it to facilitate the transfer) you can also get specialty patch cables to do a Ethernet cable network port to network port transfer by using the patch cable to plug the two computers together and just transferring things across. the firewire and networking port cables are not often used by us out here because usually this would be done once or twice in a persons lifetime and this is all that these cables are good for. you could also setup with carbonite if your old comp is still marginally functional, and backup to it, then reload your new computer from there, giving you another way to backup (I use three backups around here to protect against simultaneous computer and backup failure, and believe me, it can, and has happened to me!) which is a good thing, unless you really want to take a chance on loosing all that, it sounds like you would not like it, so... anyway, hope this helps you decide, inthaneelf -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of leonard morris Sent: Monday, March 25, 2013 12:09 PM To: jaws Subject: [JAWS-Users] transfering files, documents, folders and programs I would suppose the subject line pretty much says it all. woe folks, slow down a little, this may be what is needed but there are other items that can fix this that should be tried unless as Chris said, there is nothing of real importance on the computer. it may take a tech to run them in safe mode but if anyone can get the following files from the URL's given, put them on a thumb drive and then run them on the infected computer, they may well be able to clean the problem out: independent download anti-virus hunt and kill files: download these, on another computer if necessary put them on a thumb drive and run them. each is updated quite often so new downloads are necessary to make sure there up to date. 1. Re: [JAWS-Users] distance is 2 case 1
I'm wondering if the format that the item your cutting is in, is triggering something in transition to (I think you said) excel when you paste it. two maybe's here: 1. you can look at your control panel, (and wherever regional settings are)and see if there might be a layout that would make a difference, mine is all in American English and I haven't run into this on win 7, I think I did a long time back in win ME and there were two factors one being this, how my numeric's were set to display and item 2 below. 2. you might try setting the numeric data value of the column your pasting into to dollars (or pounds sterling in your case I think) so that it knows that even if it looks funky its money not distances or formula's. control key and space bar then apps key and f for format cells, (alternative is control key and the 1 on the numbers row) and then select a category, sometimes just locking it as text in here can make things work better. and yes, I did see where you said it was mis copying it in jaws, this is why I put the regional settings notes first, smile. really do hope this helps, inthane -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Chris Hill Sent: Saturday, March 02, 2013 7:22 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] distance is 2 case 1 That's the trouble, most of my cut/paste seems to involve financial stuff, so I can't be dure. Sometimes I get the amount, other times I get the message of distance is 2. I just got this and tried the insert-space then c to see what Jaws claims is in the clipboard and it said distance is 2 case 1. Am I the only one getting this? Has anyone else reported it? The really weird thing this time was that when I pasted the first time I got my amount, and the second time I pasted I got this. It is like something aka Jaws is playing with the clipboard contents at some point. I suspect Jaws, because this particular frustration has yet to happen with NVDA or Window-eyes. I suggest that you simply leave your regular version of Firefox 19 intact because unless you roll all the way back to Firefox 3.6, it will keep updating itself back to Firefox 19 every time you launch it. So leave Firefox 19 alone and use it to access web sites that you know it works with. Instead, download the portable version of Firefox 15 from the site below and use it to access those sites with which Firefox 19 is giving you trouble. Installing the portable version of Firefox 15 will not overlay your existing regular version of Firefox 19, and it will work exactly like the regular version of Firefox 15. You can even create a shortcut key to launch it once you have installed it. I misspoke in my earlier post, though. Although you can have both regular and portable versions of Firefox on your computer at the same time, you cannot run them at the same time; you can only run one version of Firefox at a time, although you can run either the regular or portable version of Firefox at the same time as IE. Previously, up through Windows Vista, I could alt tab between all of the programs that I had open. With Windows 7 and now with Windows 8, often I cannot alt tab between all of them. I'll give you an example. I was just paying a bill online. I had open Internet Explorer, Notepad (where my payment info was), and JAWS. I was in IE and wanted to alt tab to Notepad. However, when I pressed alt tab, it went from IE to JAWS and would go no farther when I held alt and continued to press tab. If I released alt and then pressed alt tab again, it would go back to IE and would go no farther. So, only IE and JAWS were in the alt tab order even though Notepad was also open. To get to Notepad, I had to use the JAWS window list, which I don't find as convenient as alt tab. Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone have any idea how to fix it? As I said, this started with Windows 7 but I am now using Windows 8, on a different machine, and am getting the same behavior. I upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7 at the same time that I upgraded from JAWS 9 to JAWS 13 (I'm now using JAWS 14). I don't know if this is a Windows issue or a JAWS issue or something else. actually I would recommend you use either windows live mail, or the hidden windows mail (which, both are very similar to outlook express in function) the internal structure of windows 7 has been largely rebuilt, many things that could have been put together have been, the start menu has changed its shape and style, sort of like vista's but a bit more so, and works well. the biggest things that folks notice when first starting up in w7 is when they hit the windows key they end up in a search box, type in what your looking for, or even the first few letters and you will get the first thing windows thinks your looking for in the field your typing in, and a list under it of other things that might be what your looking for. this sounds like it would be awkward and slow, but it really does get quite fast and it works fairly well once you find out or get told a few things about searching in w7. the other thing is the empty desktop, this can and will work, and can be left as is, or can be changed once you learn where a few things are located. there is as well a free application that changes you back to the XP classic menu, if you really want it (I gave/installed this on my wife's computer since she was having a real problem with the new styled menus), where as I have kept and adapted to the new system of w7 a few things have new names, a few applications are easier to use, a couple (a very small amount) are a bit more difficult since they don't respond like they used to, but over all win 7 is a good OS except for the lack of outlook express showing on it (as I mentioned above windows mail is in there and there is a set of easy re-work files to get it running again). I have a first use tutorials and reference works file, and a windows 7 helpful hints downloadable zip file at my grab bag site for anyone who wants to get them. I have been told they are very helpful to those starting up in win 7. http://grabbag.alacorncomputer.com HTH, inthane -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Sugar Sent: Saturday, February 23, 2013 6:06 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Cost of upgrading jaws? Hi Sugar, Though not commonly known, there is a version of Outlook Express included with Windows 7, just hidden from users so they can purchase Office products for Outlook, or force people to use Windows Live Mail. I have the tweaks, files and instructions uploaded to send space, but should you take that plunge into Windows 7, you don't have to worry about upgrading to another mail client, as the instructions are quite simple and easy to go through. I should also note that the main difference between Outlook Express and Windows Mail is the inclusion of a Junk Mail folder, the ability to deal with Spam messages more easily with the applications key, and a couple of annoying bugs, though I'm not sure if this is a Windows issue, or a Jaws issue. The first bug is that the auto complete feature of Windows Mail is hit or miss. Oh, don't get me wrong, the addresses do auto complete, but Jaws isn't reporting the completed address, so you're left wondering if it's going to the proper address. The second bug is the fact that when using your arrow keys to go through the folder list on the left-hand side of the screen, should you come across a folder containing saved messages in it, Jaws automatically moves focus to the message list from the folder list. It doesn't matter whether the messages are unread or not, and you're never sure how many messages you have that are unread in that folder or what, as you never get a chance to listen to Jaws read out the entire folder name and unread messages as it did in Outlook Express. This is especially the case if you have message rules implemented, and you have your messages sorted by subject words and if the messages go into their own folders. Other than that, Windows Mail is exactly like Outlook Express, with a couple of tweaks here and there. I also don't know if Freedom Scientific has stopped supporting Windows mail, but Eric can speak to that should he decide it's warranted. Hope this helps. Those are just the ones I remember having problems with recently using IE 9 that were accessible with FF.. Mostly I don't compare page by page unless I know ahead of time that there is something that is supposed to be there and isn't on IE 9. I would think that Jaws should put more effort into making IE more accessible or at least fix this freezing problem with Firefox. If you are having a lot of crashes with firefox as your default browser, caused by clicking on links, you might want to change to ie as the default. You can download ff17.x off of mozilla's ftp site, you have to dig for it though. But apparently, it can be made to work with Windows 7 with a few registry tweaks that should not be attempted by the timid or faint of heart. 2. Windows Mail: Not to be confused with the similar-sounding Windows Live Mail above, it works with Windows 7 and 8, but is not nearly as accessible or easy to use as the former. 3. Mail: Windows 8 supposedly comes with an email client simply called Mail, but nobody seems to know much about it. 4. Thunderbird: Not to be confused with the Ford sports coupe of the same name, an email client developed by Mozilla, the Firefox folks, that is supposed to be compatible with XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8. 5. Edora: An older email client that is no longer supported but still favored by some JAWS users that works with XP and Windows 7 6. Outlook: the email client that comes bundled with MS Office, it is compatible with JAWS and works with all versions of Windows. 7. Outlook Express: still a favorite with XP users because of its simplicity and ease of use, but does not work with higher versions of Windows. Hit ctrl-alt-escape, find the firefox in applications, hit the applications/context key on it and choose end task. Second of all, having used both firefox and ie9, I'd say that ie9 gives more information on webpages where there is any difference at all. I have yet to find one that is more accessible with firefox. If you are having a lot of crashes with firefox as your default browser, caused by clicking on links, you might want to change to ie as the default. You can download ff17.x off of mozilla's ftp site, you have to dig for it though. If it weren't for a couple of plugins that allow me to block ads and control what javascript I wish to allow, along with how it deals with rss, I'd use internet explorer instead of firefox. I've used firefox for many years, so I don't say that lightly. I have yet to try the release version of ff19, but the beta crashed just like ff18 did. The most aggravating part is to have to restart the computer to shut down Firefox. The computer doesn't freeze, just Firefox. I could still use more advice if anyone has any ideas. I know there are many avid Firefox users on this list. I presume that to roll back to Firefox 17 I would have to remove FF 19. But where would I get 17. And is 17 the best version for Jaws users? In old emails I had read about really low versions but it seems like they would have many security holes as newer versions of browsers generally have better security. Using a different link for youtube would not help me since I never go to youtube and search for videos. I click links from friends that take me to interesting youtube videos. If I keep IE 9 as the default I may never realize how much more accessible the page might be on Firefox. Now, I only try Firefox when I know there are form fields or other information I know should be there. I imagine there is a great deal more information that I don't even realize I am missing using IE 9. If others experience similar problems then perhaps I should contact Jaws or Firefox about it. Actually I was amazed at how inferior IE 9 was using Jaws. Below is the email I received: It seems to be quite sluggish for one, but most recently it has stopped recognizing commands while on Internet Explorer. It will not recognize the alt key so I can get to the menu where file, view, tools, etc. are located. I tried using the control key and the enter key together on Facebook, but it would not pull up a new page. I began to wonder if the control key and the alt key had gone bad. So, I tried youtube. They alt key and the left arrow (go back) worked on youtube. Jaws will say on youtube control and whatever other key I am pressing. Jaws will say alt and whatever other key I am pressing, but it will not perform the task. I tried tabbing to the menu, but when I got to where the menu should be it just said toolbar button. I select the button and nothing happens. I shift tab up to the address bar and try typing in the location and I get no results. It does not recognize the letters. 1. Alt key does not work as it should. 2. Control key does not work as it should 3. Jaws is not reading what I type in the address bar. 4. Computer is sluggish especially with Outlook 2010. Do you know what may be causing this to occur? I am using Jaws 13. That is the only version available on that computer. I am also using Internet Explorer 9. All help will be greatly appreciated.
