Hi Michele,

If, by media, you mean the likes of pictures, census entries, BMD
certificates, etc. then, yes, I have a boatload of them. I have 9 files and
each one of them is a stand-alone file. There is only 1 file that I am
actively working on right now, however. So I guess the best way of doing
this would be to send 2-3 files at a time (after I back them up, of course)?

Thanks for your reply.

Dorothy

Dorothy,
If you have any media in your file I will have to convert your file for you.
All you need to do is create a backup of your file and then email it to me
using the free WeTransfer service https://www.wetransfer.com/ You can send
it to supp...@legacyfamilytree.com and put Attn: Michele so that it gets put
in my box. I will be back at work on Monday morning.

The older versions of FTM embedded media and you can't transfer the media
via a gedcom. All of the contemporary programs link to media including FTM.
What I will do is convert your FTM 2005 file to FTM 2014 which will pull the
media out and link to it. I will then because to gedcom your file and import
it into Legacy without losing your media.

If you don't have any media in your file you can totally ignore everything I
just said. FTM 2005 creates great gedcoms (better than the newer versions).
You can export your file as a gedcom and then import it into Legacy.

I presently using Family Tree Maker 2005 (a fairly old one). However, Family
Tree Maker (FTW) is now in the hands of McKiev since the demise of
Genealogy.com, (they have been gobbled up by Ancestry.com and I am not a
member of Ancestry). There were  a number of things I could do in FTW
software like saving reports to desktop other than to My Documents,
exporting a file to .pdf - things I am unable to do now. As a result, I am
thinking very seriously of changing software for my family genealogy.

I have a huge concern, however. I have spent the better part of 17 years
accumulating information on my families and I don't want to lose any of this
information. Some of my files are huge. So here is my question:

Is there a way I can transfer all my files to Legacy? Has anybody on the

I would be grateful for any information and guidance readers can give me,

I don’t have access to the inner workings on the LUG mailing list. I did post a

Re: [LegacyUG] Upload Event Notes to Ancestry

2018-03-07 Thread Michele/Support
Legacy also has a "description" field for events and that might is one reason
it doesn't translate correctly. Ancestry would need to look for the NOTE tag in
the gedcom and translate it to that Desc field.

I do see the "Notes" field now under the Tools icon. (thank you for that!) I
will have to play with that a bit.

Since Legacy uses the standard gedcom NOTE tag then Ancestry needs to be the
one to interpret that information correctly when it is uploaded.

Actually you can put notes in Ancestry. In Facts you can add a description to
the fact. There is another place under Tools in the upper right corner that
notes and comments can be entered. The notes in this area are added by the
owner of the tree, but anyone can access the comments portion.
We had a great session at rootstech on this.

[LegacyUG] Tip of the Day (Legacy Staff)

2018-03-07 Thread Michele/Support
TIP OF THE DAY (Legacy Staff) - Sources

The most frequent type of genealogy questions we get are questions about
sources and source citations (DNA is a close second). I wanted to give you
some resources that will help you understand this topic better.

Our SourceWriter templates are based on the examples in the book Evidence
Explained by Elizabeth Shown Mills. If you don't have this book I highly
recommend that you add it to your home reference library. Don't immediately
skip to the examples! The first two chapters are a must read. If you
understand the WHY of citations all will become clear :)

The first two chapters are:
Fundamentals of Evidence Analysis
Fundamentals of Citation

These two chapters will have you looking at your research in a new way :)

The Evidence Explained website has MANY free articles and a forum where you
can ask questions. https://www.evidenceexplained.com/

To understand how you apply this information in Legacy itself, you can watch
Geoff's FREE webinar, Sources and Citations Made Simple, Standard, and
Powerful. It is consistently one of our most popular webinars.
https://www.evidenceexplained.com/

A lot of our Legacy users are a bit intimidated by source citations because
it is new territory for them. Legacy has built-in templates to help you
create citations that have the needed elements and will keep your citations
consistent. HOWEVER if you don't understand the why behind the citation you
will never understand the full value of your citations.

[LegacyUG] LUG Monthly Reminder

2018-03-02 Thread Michele/Support
Legacy User Group Monthly Reminder

1) Please help us keep the Legacy User Group Email List friendly, helpful,
and fun.

2) We do not allow attachments or embedded images because we have users that
are on dial up or have metered connections. Also, please send your emails
using plain text. Some users are using email clients that can't "see" HTML
or RichText so they end up with garbled emails.

3) Please keep the conversation confined to the Legacy program and to the
add-ons that work with Legacy. Since we have a direct sync to FamilySearch,
FamilySearch questions are usually fair game. You can post questions about
MyHeritage if your question relates to Legacy in some way. If you are having
a problem with MyHeritage please email their tech support at
mailto:supp...@myheritage.com. Once we have the direct sync to MyHeritage we
will expand what we allow.

4) Several Legacy staff members and beta testers monitor this list and they
may advise you to email mailto:supp...@legacyfamilytree.com for more complex
technical support issues or ask you to send enhancement requests here
https://legacyfamilytree.com/Suggest.asp The LUG email list is more for "How
do I... in Legacy?" and for tips that will help other users.

5) Keep up to date with what's going on at Legacy by subscribing to our
newsletter at https://legacyfamilytree.com/subscribe.asp. You can also click
over to the Legacy Home tab to see hot links to all of the latest news
articles and announcements in Legacy itself.

6) Don't forget that you can also join the Legacy User Group Facebook page

TIP OF THE DAY - It's Friday

Since today is Friday and I know all of you are looking forward to a weekend
of genealogy research, today would be a good day to do a little file
maintenance.

1) Run a Potential Problems report to see where you are in your quest for
file perfection :)
(turn Gaps OFF for the report)

2) Run a Find Duplicates just to give you an idea how your duplicate
checking is going

3) Check your open To-Do tasks to see if there is anything you can work on
this weekend

4) Check your Media Links to make sure no unbroken links have crept in

5) Do a check/repair on your file

6) Backup your file to somewhere other than your hard drive

Now you are ready to get down and dirty this weekend with a researching
marathon.

Re: [LegacyUG] AFN Numbers

William,

Just out of curiosity, how are you finding AFN numbers for your Mellettes? I
see them in the old Pedigree Resource File from time to time but rarely these
days.

I generated an Ancestor Book Report. I would like to copy parts of it after
I edit it and publish it on a personal website, crediting Legacy of course.
I see no way to do this using the Ancestor Book Report. It appears that I
can save the information as a PDF or as various image types but not as an
editable document.

Is this correct?

Is there a better way than by using Ancestor Book Report to get all the
info, with the lovely footnotes, etc. into a document I can easily edit
before publishing? I just want a Word document with the same info.

Thanks!

I am not sure which one of my raw DNA files I used to upload. I personally
tested at Ancestry and then transferred that to FTDNA and I also tested at

Good morning,

I have a question about birth dates and potential problem notification coming
up.

"Child 2 born too soon after prev child"

Child 1 is born Feb 8, 1929 and Child 2 is born Jan 17, 1930. Why is Legacy
telling me that the amount of time between these two children's birth is
shorter than normal?

That's about 11 months, I always thought the pregnancy is 9 months

In the exclude from potential problems, it has a place to check for "Warn if
child was born less than 12 months after the previous child". Is there a way to
change this to 9 months?

 I am running Legacy 9.

Thank you,

Debbie

Ian,

I have an interest in this location because it is the city of my husband’s
birth. I don’t know what the proper location entry fields should be. Anchorage,
before statehood, was known as Anchorage, Territory of Alaska.

All areas of Alaska are boroughs except for Anchorage, which is known as one
type of legality, incorporated as a city government but I believe the state
recognizes it differently for legal or technical purposes.

Before statehood, it’s pretty easy to figure out how to format the location,
but following statehood, exactly how should it be entered? Perhaps Anchorage,
Anchorage Borough, Alaska would be acceptable?

Here are my location notes for Anchorage, Alaska:

Alaska became the 49th state on Jan. 3, 1959. Prior to this date, Anchorage was

its legal name is the Municipality of Anchorage, it is considered a

I thought there would be a workaround for this, in that for Options 5.7 in
the box for "Displayed" next to "Circa, Cir or C" one could type "Est" and
thus, having typed Circa, Cir or C have the prefix Est appear on screen and
in reports.

However, although it works for on-screen display, it doesn't for Reports,
where the word Circa appears. I suspect this is intentional, because, for
example, if I type Abt this is displayed as Abt but appears in Reports as
"about".

Intentional it may be, but it seems wrong to me. I would expect to get what
I asked for!

[LegacyUG] New feature :)

2017-09-19 Thread Michele/Support
TIP OF THE DAY (Legacy Staff) - New Feature!

(Legacy 9)

The programmers have slipped in a new feature :) The Relationship Report now
has a filter so that you can tell Legacy you only want to see your BLOOD
relatives.

Before you get started, you need to set your relationships. Go to TOOLS >
SET RELATIONSHIPS. Normally you will set the relationships to yourself.

Once you have set the relationships the report will become active. Go to
REPORTS > OTHER REPORTS > RELATIONSHIP REPORT.

You will see a new checkbox for "Only include blood-relatives"

Re: [LegacyUG] Question about DNA Tests

2017-08-09 Thread Michele/Support
I just answered you on Facebook. Here is what I said…

If it were me, I would have him do a y67 and a FamilyFinder at FTDNA. The y67
is the DNA test you use to track a specific surname line. The FamilyFinder is
what you use for "cousin matching." I would also upload his FamilyFinder
results to GEDmatch (free).

The yDNA results can be entered into Legacy but it is pretty much a view only.
Any work you want to do with that DNA will be done on the FTDNA website and on
GEDmatch.

The way I track DNA matches in Legacy is by using Hashtags.

I am not that knowledgeable on the different types of DNA testing - but I do

What test do you recommend??

Thank you Cathy, you saved the day!

Indeed it was a missing story that caused the error and it would seem that
those numbers in parentheses are a clue to the Legacy location. (1, 18835) The
error occurs in my RIN #1 though I'm not sure about the 18835 as I do not have
that many stories in my file. But when I went to RIN #1 and tried to open the
story, I got my old familiar error message. I deleted the link and then I was
able to extract my family file from my master database with no problems or
errors.

Many Kudos Cathy

PS: if other list members have the same situation and get errors, here's a
little tip: When you go to back up the extracted file be sure to close the
other file or you will get "Backup Error 527" Close the master or larger file
and it will go without incident.

I have a mater database of 75K+ from which I am trying to extract my
family line of about 54K.. I never had any problem doing so in the
nearly 25 years I have been using Legacy until NOW!

I keep getting the message "Location 18835 not found" followed by a
series of numbers in parentheses such as (1, 19846) with the latter
number often different.

The screen instructs me to run the Repair/Check program under File
Maintenance, which I keep doing to no avail and no fix. Afterwards I
get "ERROR 3021 - no current record" I then looked up the Error number
in the Legacy Help menu and followed all suggestions. Sill I get the
same results.

In desperation I tried the last suggested fix, which was to export the
file as a Gedcom, but that brought me back once again to the "Location
18835 not found." So now I'm really stumped.

Does anyone know what that means? Is it referencing a geological
location or a person's data., marriage, event. etc.??

In short, any ideas how to fix this and save 30 years of work?

In response to Michele Lewis and Ms Pinter, you state that Legacy does in fact
recognize Est as a valid prefix to a date, however that is not what Legacy is
"doing". I understand that the underlying programming see's "Estimated" as
valid "input" BUT will not let that full version stand, it changes it to "est"
with lower case first letter. I am a stickler for continuity in my file and
all other date prefix's have the first letter capitalized.

If the prefix is recognized, it should allow the capitalization as it does on
all other prefix's..and I must add that in previous versions right up to
and including Legacy 8 update prior to this last one, it had no problem
changing Estimated, estimated, Est, est to .Est. So something happened in
the latest update to Legacy 8.

I have made the choice to not wait for any programming change as I assume that
Legacy 9 has staff concentrating on those updates and problem reports rather
than looking backwards at this time. I will upgrade to Legacy 9 later this
year but in the meantime I have done a search and replace for est to Abt. My
Ancestry file will also be changed as was suggested by some bright person
(Thank you) and will move forward with my merge of those file when they are in
sync.

Thanks to everyone who responded..this is why I love Legacy.

Using the _AppData folder for any files that relate to the user and their
data SHOULD BE BANNED.

I suspect that MicroSoft designed it for internal files relating to
applications, which it does not matter if they are lost, and that is why
they made the folder hidden so that we would not see it.

Of course, we then decide to include it in our backups, because we have an
application which seems to think that putting user data there is a (NOT)
good idea, and have the exercise of finding out exactly which folders we
want to include and which to exclude, especially since some applications
place very large files in their _AppData folders.

Michele,

I was very interested to read the following in your post:

> You need to backup your _AppData folder. This folder holds your custom
settings.

Has there ever been a feature recommendation to include the _AppData folder
in Legacy's backup system? As important as this folder is I would expect the
folder would have been included as part of the backup long ago.

[LegacyUG] Tip of the Day

2017-06-25 Thread Michele/Support
TIP OF THE DAY - How to backup the _AppData folder (Legacy Staff)

Legacy 8 and 9

Y'all know my backup routine by now but I actually left something out. This
part of the routine will be very important if you ever have to do a "clean
uninstall" which will start you over completely from scratch. You need to
backup your _AppData folder. This folder holds your custom settings. Here is
my complete routine...

1) I check to make sure I have no broken media links
2) I check/repair my file
3) I backup my data and media to cloud storage (I keep my backups on
OneDrive)
4) I backup my _AppData folder and append the name it so that it has the
same date and time stamp as my data and media backups

The file path to the _AppData folder is \Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\_AppData

To backup the _AppData folder simply RIGHT click it and select SEND TO >
COMPRESSED (ZIPPED) FOLDER. The zip file is your backup. You can change the
name of the zip folder.

I keep my 10 more recent backups and I go in and delete the older ones
periodically. I backup my file VERY often, sometimes every day. In 12 years
of using Legacy, I have only needed a backup file twice. One time I had a
hard drive crash and the other time I had made some ill-advised global
changes to my file that I regretted.

Even if you do that, you will see weird stuff in your columns (aside from the
prefixes). It just isn’t a 100% good thing. Open Office does a much better
job and has no problem with pre-1901 dates. I use Excel for everything else

If you are going to be using Excel, the easiest work around for the date issue
is to change the date format in Legacy at Options - Customise 5.1 to -mm-dd
and then make the Date columns in Excel Number or Text rather than Date.
You still have problems with the prefixes.

Michele, your current tip contains the following: "Excel can't handle

Excel Does not have a problem with dates prior 1901. It can handle all
formats of dates. I have several spreadsheets with some having thousands of
records with dates ranging between 0900 and present. I can sort, and filter
all records correctly.

Perhaps you are referring to dates with prefixes. We sometimes think items
such as "bef" Or "c" as dat es. Technically they are not components of a
date. When you add them to a date, they are interpreted as a character
string, not a date. As a character string, the entries are not sorted as a
date.

If this is the case, then excel can still properly sort. You may have to
define a format, a relatively simple process, or perform a simple cleanup.

[LegacyUG] Tip of the Day

2017-06-12 Thread Michele/Support
Tip of the Day (Legacy Staff) - exporting as a CSV
All versions (at least since 5)

You can export the Name List and any Search List as a CSV file and then open
that file in a spreadsheet program. I recommend that you use the free Open
Office spreadsheet program and not MS Excel. Excel can't handle pre-1901
dates so you will have a problem sorting by columns. Even with Open Office
you will have some issues with the date qualifiers (abt, bef, aft, bet, cir)
but it will still go much better than in Excel.

If you are going to export to a CSV file, don't bother setting the column
widths before export. A CSV is very generic and no matter how you set the
columns in Legacy you will have to adjust them when you open the file in a
spreadsheet program.

If you need more fields go to Row 2 (and 3) and set them there. If you are
exporting to a CSV these fields will export correctly as additional columns
not "rows." You will see the additional rows if you export in any other way.

[LegacyUG] Tip of the Day

2017-06-03 Thread Michele/Support
TIP OF THE DAY (Legacy Staff) - Fun with Hashtags

(Legacy 9)

Background information - My uncle took a yDNA test at 111 markers. He has
two matches and they both match him at 110 markers and they match each other
at 111. All three lines end in a brick wall and we are yet to find the
connection. I have inputted both of these additional lines into Legacy and
have started doing research on them. My goal is to figure out where the
three lines intersect.

I want to use Hashtags to indicate all of the direct line male ancestors of
all three lines (each line gets its own Hashtag). I started with my line. My
brick wall ancestor is James Simmons born 14 Aug 1764. I went to SEARCH >
FIND > MISC. I created a Focus Group of James' descendants and then sent
that to a Search List. I then changed over to the Detailed Search tab. My
criteria was

Male > Surname > Equal to > Simmons

"Only search the Search List" (this part is important)

I have 217 people on my Search List. They are all of James' direct line male
descendants. Next I went to OPTIONS > ADD HASHTAG TO EVERYONE IN LIST. The
name of my Hashtag is

Simmons Group - James Simmons Descendants (the desciption field has "yDNA
match - TEST TAKER'S NAME" )

I then did the same thing with the other two lines.

Simmons Group - William Simmons Descendants (yDNA match - TEST TAKER'S NAME)

Simmons Group - William Simmons Descendants (yDNA match - TEST TAKER'S NAME)

(two different Williams)

I have several other Simmons Groups

Simmons Group - Silver Creek Simmons

Simmons Group - Balo Chitto Simmons

Simmons Group - Natchez Simmons

Simmons Group - Perry County

Simmons Group - 10&20 Consolidated LA Militia War of 1812

Simmons Group - 13th Regiment MS Militia War of 1812

The ultimate goal is to find overlap especially since I have quite a few
Simmons' floating around in my file as unlinked.

[LegacyUG] Tip of the Day

2017-05-22 Thread Michele/Support
TIP OF THE DAY (Legacy Staff) - What exactly are RINs and MRINs?

(All versions, Legacy 7/8/9 for Legacy Charting and Legacy 8/9 for
FamilySearch)

We get this question all the time. RIN stands for Record Identification
Number and MRIN stands for Marriage Record Identification Number. These
numbers are automatically assigned by Legacy. Legacy is a true database
program (think MS Access) and it needs these numbers to function.

You can include or exclude them from view in Option 8.2. Some people like to
use these numbers as a reference and then tie the number to their paper or
electronic filing system. For example, John Doe [42] - all of John's
documents would be filed under the number 42. Some people prefer to file by
marriage. John Doe and Mary White MRIN 15. All of their family documents
would be filed under number 15. These are only two of many ways you can file
documents.

If you do chose to use the RIN or MRINs as part of your filing system, you
need to turn Option 4.4 OFF. Also, you do not want to go to TOOLS > RENUMBER
RINs or MRINs. If you do, Legacy will compact your numbers which will mess
up your filing system.

If you do NOT use the RINs or MRINs as part of your filing system, you can
reuse the numbers (Option 4.4) and renumber them (Tools > Renumber) which
will compact your file. For OCD people like me this is a good option. Having
gaps in my numbers drives me nuts.

Some people will write in because the total number of people in their file
does not match their highest RIN number. These numbers won't match if your
RINs aren't compacted (and don't forget, if you are using these number as
part of your filing system you don't want to compact them).

If you want to have certain people on certain RIN numbers you can do that
too under Tools > Renumber. For example, there are some people that want
their direct line ancestors on the RIN that corresponds with their
Ahnentafel number. You have to renumber one person at a time. For me this is
way too much work but you can do it if you want to.

If you have some of your RINs memorized, there is a shortcut to pull people
up. If you are on the Family or Pedigree Views, you can simply hit the
letter G on your keyboard and a little Go To dialog box will popup where you
can enter a RIN.

In the Multiple Lines of Descent Report you need to know the MRINs of your
starting couples to create this report. By the way, you can turn RINs and
MRINS on and off in Reports depending if you want to see them or not. Click
Report Options and then the Include tab and it is at the bottom of the first
column.

If you are on the Name List, you can sort the list by RIN by clicking the #
button at the top left of the screen (you can also sort by Given name or
Surname by using the corresponding buttons at the top). You can also sort
any Search List this same way AND you can sort the Index View this same way.

If you are on the FamilySearch interface screen you can sort by RIN there
too. Under the People field you will see 4 buttons. The first one on the
left is the one you use to sort by RIN, Given or Surname.

If you are in Legacy Charting, if you click the Current Person button on the
toolbar you can sort this list by RIN, Give or Surname in the very same way.

Have fun playing with your RINs and MRINs :)

2017-05-16 Thread Michele/Support
The only living people you can see on FamilySearch are ones that you have
entered yourself. FamilySearch is VERY strict about that. They have probably
the tightest privacy policy. My name, date of birth etc. is in FamilySearch.
I put it there. If you were to add my name with my date of birth, even though
it would be a perfect match FamilySearch will not match it. You will have to
add me manually and get a new FSID. This of course creates a duplicate but
until I die those duplicates can’t be resolved.

Re: [LegacyUG] V9 Hinting

2017-05-16 Thread Michele/Support
No, you do not have to have uploaded a gedcom to get hints. You are seeing
hints from other people's trees. Look at it this way...

You could go to MyHeritage and fill in their search fields, names, dates,
locations, and then MyHeritage will tell you if they have anything in their
databases that matches. They don't keep the information you entered in
those search fields. It is the same thing with hinting. They look at what
you have and then they generate results but they can't collect/keep the data
in your file. It is all handled by a computer algorithm.

In the case of MyHeritage you will see two different kinds of hints. You
will see hints to documents and hints to trees that people have uploaded to
MyHeritage.

OK, thanks.

""No access to my Legacy data.""

So hinting sites only give hints if I have uploaded a gedcom to them?
I thought Legacy V9 hints sent some info up so they could tell if they had
hints. Then I could decide to subscribe if I wanted to get the info. More
confused now. Not sure what Legacy is giving me.

I'm a little confused about the hinting in V9 and the concerns about
MyHeritate getting and publishing users' data. Is there any way that the
"hinting sites" can use my Legacy database data for their own use?
Put it on their site? Or do they just look at it and suggest hints that only

[LegacyUG] Tip of the Day

2017-05-16 Thread Michele/Support
TIP OF THE DAY (Legacy Staff) - IntelliMurder and why it is important

All versions (4+)

Tools > Advanced Set Living. We (programmers and staff) affectionately call
this feature "IntelliMurder." It will go through your file and kill off
people that are most assuredly dead. Legacy automatically kills people for
you if you enter a birth date but no death date if they are older than
whatever you have set in Option 2.3. IntelliMurder goes a step further. If
you don't have a birth date it will use the surrounding people and other
information to determine if the person should be dead.

So why is this so important? If you do any sort of export and you use
privacy options to privatize living people you will end up privatizing
people from the 1700s that weren't automatically marked as descended. Also,
if you add people to FamilySearch and they are dead but marked as living no
one can see these people except for you.

I run the IntelliMurder routine from time to time just for fun but I always
run it before I do an export. I just ran it and Legacy killed 11 people in
my file. For example, it killed off Carl Friedrich Gläntzer because he was
married on 01 April 1777 and his kids were born in 1779, 1782, 1785, 1788
and 1791.

Howland,
Right now the match has to be exact. There is a suggestion in the queue for

Known providers for free email accounts whose emails do not require this

[LegacyUG] Tip of the Day

2017-05-15 Thread Michele/Support
TIP OF THE DAY (Legacy Staff) - Clearing the Quick Bookmarks

(all versions)

Quick Bookmarks are the three fields you see at the bottom of the Family
View. These are a shortcut to get to up to three specific people in your
file. I have one set to myself and then the other two are people I am
working on. To set a Quick Bookmark all you have to do is have the person
highlighted in the Family View and then right click in one of the fields.
Normally you don't have to clear these fields, you simply bookmark over them
(replace one name with another). However, if you want to clear the Quick
Bookmarks all you have to do is hold down the CTRL button when you right
click in the field and that will clear it.

By the way, to the left of the three Quick Bookmarks is a little book icon.
If you right click that icon your bookmark will be saved there. Left click
the icon and you will get a list of the bookmarks you have saved. You can
save up to 200 bookmarks here if the three Quick Bookmarks aren't enough :)

TIP OF THE DAY (Legacy Staff) - "Find duplicates using only FamilySearch ID
number"

(Legacy 8 and 9)

I ran this search for the first time today. I am not sure why I never tried
it before. To get to it go to Tools > Merge Duplicates > Find Duplicates and
then select the "Special Duplicates Searches" tab. The second option is the
"Find duplicates using only FamilySearch ID number."

I ran the search and found I have 31 pairs of people sharing the same FSID.
I can see how this could have happened when you consider the ability to auto
match and FSIDs being merged. I printed a list of the 31 pairs and went
through them. I left the FSID on the correct person and deleted the FSID on
the wrong person.

Some of the dups I could understand how a mistake could have been made but
some of them were really off. I need to go back and look at the change logs
to see who did the merge and then undo them.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tip of the Day

If the person has given blanket permission to use the photo it depends on
how it is worded on whether or not I still email them. I have an Excel
spreadsheet where I keep track of all the people I have received permission
from. When I ask for permission I ask for not only that photo but any other
that they might have taken that I find later. I also tell them that I write
for 3 blogs and that I might need that photo at some point in a post to make
a point. I always tell them that full credit to them will be given to them
as the photographer. I am yet to be turned down. Most send me an email of
thanks for taking the time to ask their permission.

If the photo was taken by someone that is now dead, I put in a new photo
request with an explanation on why I am asking for a new photo. I have had
to do that a couple of times and it was no problem at all.

It is great that you wrote this up for us. The only other step I would add
is to check the photo submitters profile because there are some that have in
there profile that users can feel free to use their photo. My Aunt is on of
them (she has submitted over 500) and I know that she would like not being
bothered with a request to use one of her photos since it is in her profile.

TIP OF THE DAY (Legacy Staff) - My current project

(Legacy 9)

I have been doing genealogy a long time, long before Find a Grave (or any
other website for that matter) existed. Back in the day you either visited
the cemetery yourself or you used a cemetery survey book. I have A LOT of
people that have a cemetery survey book as a source.

A picture of the actual tombstone is better evidence than a transcription of
the tombstone in a cemetery survey book so I have tagged everyone in my file
that uses a cemetery book as a source (easy to do on the Master Source
List). I am using the tag navigation tool in the extreme bottom right corner
of the Family View to go from person to person. It looks like this I:2. In
this case I am using Individual Tag 2. You can navigate by using the forward
and backward arrows and you can change the tag number by clicking in the
center of that button.

I am using the new FaG tool to help my find these people on Find a Grave.

1) If there is a FaG memorial with a photo, I add the FaG number to the new
FaG field, I create a new source and I delete the old one, and I ask
permission of the photographer to download the photograph to my file. I then
untag the person.

2) If there is a FaG memorial without a photo, I request a photo and I untag
this person but I then tag them on another dedicated tag letting me know
that I am in a holding pattern. I do not change my source citation. I never
use FaG as a source unless there is a photograph.

3) If there is no FaG memorial, I add one. I know the person is buried there
because I have a cemetery survey book that says so. When I create the
memorial I put full source citation to the book and I request a photo. I
then untag them from this tag and tag them on the other tag (my holding
pattern one). Again, I don't change my source, not until I have a
photograph.

So what happens if I request a photo and the FaG volunteer advises that
there is no marker? Then my cemetery book remains the best evidence. Some of
the books I use are quite old and I have found many instances where the
marker existed in 1925 but it doesn't exist anymore. In that case I will
make a note on the memorial with a full citation to the book. I add that FaG
volunteer Jane Doe #12345679 searched the cemetery and found no marker.

I started working on this yesterday. I only have 1245 more people to go :)

TIP OF THE DAY (Legacy Staff) - Cloud backup

(Legacy 9)

When you backup to the Legacy Cloud this is in addition to, not instead of,
your regular backup routine. The Legacy Cloud backup gives you an extra
layer of protection. You don't want this to be your only backup because it
only backs up your data file and not your media and it will overwrite the
previous backup so the only backup available will be your most current one.
The advantage to the cloud backup is that you can add this extra backup with
a simple check mark. The backup will be done at the same time with no extra
effort when you make your normal routine backups (and you should be backing
up routinely). The backup is saved to a secure server and no one has access
to it but you.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tip of the Day

2017-04-27 Thread Michele/Support
Here is an extra tip for you. Sometimes updates will change a few of your
custom settings which can’t be helped because of programming changes but what
you can do is open the customization screen and at the bottom click the OPTIONS
FOR DEFAULT SETTINGS and then SAVE ALL CURRENT SETTINGS AS USER-DEFAULTS.
After an update you can go back to this screen and choose RESET TO
USER-DEFAULTS. If this is an upgrade, these settings won’t include any new
options that have been added but in an update it should capture everything.
This is available in version 8 and 9.

Just to share: I couldn't see the relationships on my family view screen even
though I had run the tool to set relationships.

Then I realized that when I downloaded Version 9, my customized setting had
reset. I had white text on a white background!!!

Easily fixed - happy again. Love Version 9.

TIP OF THE DAY (Legacy Staff) - Another Easter Egg feature

Open someone's Individual's Information screen (this is where you actually
add data to someone)

Click the FamilySearch ID LABEL. If the person does not have an FSID number
already in the field, you will get FamilySearch's record search results
page. If they do have an FSID entered you will go directly to their Family
Tree page. I LOVE THIS!

Now click the Find a Grave ID LABEL. If the person does not have a FaG
memorial number already entered, you will get the FaG search results page.

Howland,
If you have broken links they simply stay broken. The whole point of
checking your media links and doing a check/repair before you backup your
file is because it is a good practice. If you always do this you will find
problems when they are small before they become big problems. Most things
Legacy can fix on its own but some things will require your attention
(Legacy will tell you in the log file).

problems when they are small before they become big problems. Most things
Legacy can fix on its own but some things will require your attention
(Legacy will tell you in the log file).

The original message to the list is in the attachment.

This action is required because of the DMARC Reject/Quarantine Policy
imposed by some email providers. Users who want to send messages without
conversion to attachments should use a different email address for their
subscription.

Known providers for free email accounts whose emails do not require this
conversion include gmail.com and hotmail.com. Many other email providers
will also work but you will have to give them a try.

[LegacyUG] Prep for Version 9

2017-04-17 Thread Michele/Support
As we get closer to the release of Legacy 9 there are a couple of things I
want to tell you before you upgrade that will make things go smoother.

1) Make sure you have no broken media links
2) Do a check/repair on your file (Select FILE > FILE MAINTENANCE >
CHECK/REPAIR. Click PROCEED. If an error is found select NO so that the
check/repair will continue. If there are errors found, run the check repair
again until there are no errors. If there are any errors that Legacy can't
clear automatically, look at the log file that is generated and it will give
you the information you need to clear the errors manually.)
3) Backup your file

By the way. You should always do #1 and #2 before you backup your file as a
matter of routine.

That's it! Easy peasy. When you upgrade from Legacy 8 to 9 the upgrade will
go just like a normal update does. This isn't going to be the big deal like
it was when we upgraded from version 7 to version 8 because with that
upgrade we had a complete interface change, the installation was completely
different, and you had to manually convert your files. Not this
time  However, if you are upgrading from Legacy 7 or earlier to Legacy 9 you
will have to do the manual conversion process. Here is the info you need if
you are one of those people

http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00634

Having said all of that, all I can say is that the release is getting close
but I can't say exactly when the release will be so don't ask me.

P.S. It is possible you will lose some of your custom settings because of
the customization files might be changing a bit but there is something you
can do to minimize this. Go to OPTIONS > CUSTOMIZE. At the bottom of the
screen click OPTIONS FOR DEFAULT SETTINGS then SAVE ALL CURRENT SETTINGS AS
USER-DEFAULTS.

If you lose anything you can come back to this screen and this time select
RESET TO USER-DEFAULTS.

Having said that, there will be some new options in the options menu so you
will still need to go through the screens and select what you want for the
new stuff.

[LegacyUG] Windows Creators Update

2017-04-13 Thread Michele/Support
For those that have updated to the new Windows Creators update - We have a
couple of known bugs which have been reported to our developers.

1) Right click in the children's list does not work. You have to left click
first then the right click will work BUT if you change to another screen
within Legacy OR you switch to another task window outside of Legacy you
will lose your right click again and the cycle starts over.

2) The Options button on the Descendant View and the Index View have been
disabled.

We know about these and we are working on it so there is no need to send an
email to tech support.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source & citation removal

A gedcom can only hold media LINKS not the media itself. That is why you
can't see the media on Ancestry. You have to upload the media manually one
at a time. This is a limitation of gedcoms.

On the Assigned Sources screen, highlight the source you want to copy. At the

The source clipboard is not a Windows clipboard, it will only work within
Legacy, so you cannot copy and paste the entire source to Family Search.

You can only copy individual fields one at a time from the Legacy source by
highlighting the content then using Ctrl-C to copy, Switch to Family Search and
use CTRL-V to paste.

The same will be needed when copying a source from Family Search to Legacy, use
Ctrl-C to copy parts of the FamilySearch source and CTRL-V to paste those into
your Legacy Source fields.

Re: [LegacyUG] Synchronizing Sources for Marriages

2017-02-13 Thread Michele/Support
My "trick" is to copy and paste the source into the "reason this information is
correct" popup box when you transfer an event over to FamilySearch. This works
very well because instead of the source being put at the bottom of the
FamilySearch screen under the Sources heading (on the FamilySearch website), it
will actually appear in the same box as the event itself making it much more
useful.

I was hoping that one of the staff members would answer this question.

It is my understanding that the Legacy Family Search component for Legacy does
not handle sources for events and marriages so there is nothing you are doing
wrong.

If you have sources in your Legacy for a marriage you will have to add those to
the marriage via the FamilySearch site and if FamilySearch has a source for a
marriage you will have to manually add that to the Legacy marriage.

1) Yes, you can put Basic Style Sources on the Clipboard
2) Yes, you can add sources to the Master Source List without actually using
them yet HOWEVER be careful that you don't do OPTIONS > PURGE UNUSED or you
will lose them all AND you want to be VERY careful with FILE > FILE MAINTENANCE

Forgive me if this is a really dumb question but I just started trying to learn
to use the Source Writer and Clipboard.

I need help / clarification on something (although I have already read the
book and watched the video's !!)

In the past, I was just using the Basic System. I have 15-20 sources entered
using that system and have connected them to people in my Tree. Can "Basic
System" sources be used on the clipboard ?

If I wanted to add a "bunch" of new sources Can I just add them to the
Master Source list and cite them to the correct people in my Tree later ??
. or do I have to immediately add them to a specific person in my Tree.

In other words, can I use the Source Writer to build my Master List and
afterwards, go back and link these sources to the correct people and info
and use the Clipboard to do this more quickly

Thanks for your guidance
JoAnne

I left "On Children" checked, but haven't figured out yet what that will do.

I plan to explore Options to see what all I can do.

Yes, it is searchable. If it is a tip that the staff or a beta tester
posted it will also have a hashtag making it even easier to find things.
#LegacyFamilyTreeTips.

The posts are in a rolling format. If someone responds it pops back up to

Are there reasons Legacy doesn't have a Forum? Opinions?

Re: [LegacyUG] New user trying to upload files

2016-09-09 Thread Michele/Support
In Ancestral Quest run the file maintenance routines first.

Now open Legacy and use the direct import instead of a gedcom. File >
Import File > PAF/Ancestral Quest

Now about your other issue, the Potential Problem alerts you are seeing..

You might want to change some of the settings to that the Potential Problems
work for you instead of against you.

The first thing you need to do it go to Tools > Potential Problems and set
your preferences. You can skip the Records tab, that is for when you want
to run a report. Look at the Warnings, Problems, Standardization and Gaps
tabs. Review the selections to see if there is anything you want to change.
The "Gaps" warnings is more for new researchers. Seasoned researchers know
to look for these gaps automatically. They know that they can signal either
an unknown child or possibly a second marriage. I have the Gaps option
completely turned off.

Here is another thing you will want to do to decrease the number of
potential problems. If you use any events that normally occur AFTER someone
died (Cemetery, Obituary are two common ones) you will want to exclude these
from the Potential Problems checking GLOBALLY. Go to View > Master Lists >
Event Definition. Highlight the event and then click Edit over on the
right. At the top of this box you will see some check mark boxes. Make
sure you check Exclude from Potential Problems Report.

Another thing that will cut down on PP errors is to globally sort your
children and then tell Legacy to sort the children as you enter new ones
(you can also do this for marriages and events but those two don't flag as
errors)

To globally sort... Go to Tools > Other Tools > Sort Children, Marriages,
and Events. Check mark the ones you want to do and there you go. Now we
need to set it in the Options menu. Go to Options > Customize > 2. Data
Entry
2.2 When Adding New Spouses, Children, and Events (gbl). Set your check
marks here and now you are finished.

You don't want to let the Potential Problems to get too far ahead of you.
If something is not a problem then mark it as such right then (hover over
the PP icon and follow the directions that appear in the box that pops up).
I would also run a global report from time to time to check on the
outstanding ones that you haven't cleared yet (Tools > Potential Problems,
this time go to the Records tab)

If you still want to turn them completely then go to Options > Customize >
8. View
Go to 8.11 Monitor Potential Problems (ff) and uncheck the box. Notice that
this has an (ff) behind it which means it only affects this family file.
You will need to go into each one of your family files and set it (if you
have more than one file).

I am a new user, and I am trying to load files from Ancestral Quest, version
14. I have some large note files, a few media, and a large database of
109,190 individuals. I have uploaded the deluxe software, at least 12 times
or so, tried to import a GEDCOM, and all seems well, until I happen to click
on one grandfather. When I do I get this message: Run-time error '9':
Subscript out of range. When I click ok, the program closes.

He was married twice, and had 11 children by each wife. Some of them have
red flags because using the dates of official records, some of the births
are too close to the birth of the previous child. Some of these might be the
cause of so many of the infants deaths immediately. Of the second 11, only 4
lived any length of time.

I have deleted the software several times, deleted the files, deleted the
GEDCOM's and started over, but still get the same error message.

The only thing I have not done is try to load a file direct from Ancestral
Quest, and I could not seem to locate the file on my computer although I
know where it is.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks so much. I am really
frustrated. Jairmie in Technical Support has been very nice and made several
suggestions with I tried. I even loaded the file and sent it to him, and he
had no problem getting into the record of my grandfather.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help on Family Search Interface

2016-08-31 Thread Michele/Support
The names you see on the left under the main name are the AKAs you have
added. You can also transfer AKAs. If you are seeing the identical name it
is because you have entered an AKA that is the same as the main name.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Help on Family Search Interface

I have started adding my data to Family Search, using the Legacy interface,
and have a question:

When I select my person in Legacy and go to Family Search

"My Legacy Person |
"Family Tree Person

> Name "Person's Name"|
Name empty field

> "Person's Name"|
< "Person's Name"

Gender"Male" |
Gender"Male"

Is it normal to have two copies of the Person (My Legacy Person), I do not
see this on other records? What is going on and how do I remove the
"duplicate".

Re: [LegacyUG] Unfinished display at startup -- No Tags showing

2016-08-19 Thread Michele/Support
Joseph,
It is a known issue when you open Legacy to the Family View, tags and the
highlight bar do not display until you navigate. This is issue 5828 and
5831.

Maybe I missed it, but I haven't noticed anyone mention anything about the
Legacy window display not being completed (no Tags showing) when opening
Legacy or after running file maintenance options. I'm using the mouse to
click many hundreds of times during the day, so the extra two clicks at
startup would seem unimportant, but its enough of an aggravation that if
this is only happening to me and not others, I would like to know about it.
This problem started with the program code we received in each of the last
four builds except for one. In the builds before that, the display would be
fully finished, with all the Tags showing, when opening Legacy, or after
running file maintenance options.
