Re: Another Update About Infovox Demo Voices
Hi Cheryl, I haven't experienced this myself, but I think I may understand what they mean. Basically, reading any app with Voiceover is fine. The problem must be when other apps try to speak using the system voice. Visiovoice was just their example of the kind of app they were warning against. Some other examples would be the speech output for Growl, or setting up certain apps like adium, Messages/iChat, or Skype to automatically speak events. Another example is apps that are self-voicing such as the RS Games client. Also, If you configure the Mac in system preferences to automatically speak the time or to speak alerts after a delay. Basically, anything else that tries to use the voice on it's own while voiceover is running will apparently cause that problem with the demo. I hope this explanation makes sense. Re: trying to update Flash player - problem solved
Hi Donna, Here's a tip for next time you update flash. After pressing tab to get to the correct button, using VO+space doesn't work as expected. You need to simply press only the space bar. It's weird, but for some reason that's how it works in this particular installer. I got to this thread too late to help you this time, but this should explain what the problem was. Re: stanza for the Mac.
Hi Ricardo, If you just installed Java this week, you might try running software update and then try stanza again. There was a Java update released on Tuesday, and then another one this morning. Java updates are normally quite rare, and so I would guess maybe there was something wrong with the first update. I hope this is helpful. It's sure good to be participating on the list again. One of the nuisances about the download.com pages is that there are multiple items labeled as download links on each page, and they point to downloads for other items. I just checked that this works, and that the resulting download does open up correctly. Lexcycle's home pages have been off line since November 2011, slightly after their final update release of Stanza for iOS 5, so you can't go there for the downloads of Stanza Desktop for either the Mac or Windows any more. Sites that point to the source link, such as MacUpdate, won't work. On the Windows side there are more alternate sources, but the softonic pages seem to be a reasonable choice for Stanza desktop: http://stanza-desktop.en.softonic.com/download I was going to put this information into a comment on the AppleVis site, along with some information on how to navigate, but just never had the time to complete my draft. I assume you're going to use this for file format conversions, which is what the app was primarily designed for, as well as an uploader for the Stanza iOS app. You can use it to read ePub, but there are some focus issues. Like, if you if you try to use the bookmarks function to move to a page, you need to move to the first visible item with VO-Command-Home in order to start reading at the first paragraph on that page. Most of the web navigation commands can be used (enabling the 1 letter navigation feature in VoiceOver Utility for QuickNav is useful), and navigation by headers works well. You can navigate by paragraph, line, sentence, word, character, etc. Hope you're not planning on using this as an ePub reader, because while it's doable if you take time to work through the focus quirks, I find the experience annoying, so for straight text reading (not interacting to review text) Adobe Digital Editions Preview 1.8 is better, or even the new paid app, Bookle, in the App Store, which is still somewhat primitive. (You don't have to press an arrow key to read the next page, the way you currently do in Adobe Digital Editions Preview, but it's irritating that, for example, you can't move back from the start of a chapter to the last page

Hi Donna, As far as I can tell, your password for iCloud mail is just the password for your apple ID. I'm just making a semi-educated guess, but I think It's just a part of your iCloud account and probably can't have a different password for technical reasons. I don't know what is causing it, but when I went to twitter and changed my email address with them, I received the verification message from twitter just fine. Re: Using Course Smart e-books
Hi dawn, I'm going through this process right now. After signing up with the web site, the first thing you want to do is to email accessibil...@coursesmart.com and ask them to enable the accessible reader on your account. Once the accessible reader is enabled, when you access a book, you will be able to see the text. However, there are additional optimizations that can be performed to make it easier to navigate with a screen reader. This includes descriptions of images in the book, as well as better tagging of paragraphs, headings, lists and tables. They say that 80% of CourseSmart titles are already tagged. My book was not. If you read a book and it just seems to be raw, unorganized text, write to the same email address and provide the title and author of the book so that it can be submitted for tagging. Unfortunately, this takes a few weeks, but you can still read the book as it is until they are finished with it. It is definitely usable even in an untagged form, it's just much more pleasant once the work is done. I hope this helps. Re: Problem with carbon copy cloner resolved
Hi Missy, I've seen this one time before. Here's what I eventually figured out. The cloning process did start the first time I clicked the clone button, but for some reason, VoiceOver didn't notice that the window had changed. The only reason I knew at all is because I touched the external drive and felt the vibrations that told me it was working. Toggling VoiceOver off and back on revealed the window containing the status of the cloning process. Even switching windows and then coming back didn't show the status window, only a reset of VO would do. This is a highly unusual thing for VO to do, and it doesn't happen often. Still, I might write the author of CCC to see if he has any ideas why it happens. Glad you got it working. Hopefully this tip will save you some frustration if this comes up again. Justin On Jul 25, 2011, at 9:03 AM, Missy Hoppe wrote: Hi, all! Please disregard my original message on this subject. Apparently, the tenth time or so is the charm. It seems to be working now. I'll keep an external HD with Lion, and will reverse this process once the lion service pack has been released or I hear from others that some of the bugs, most noteably the com.apple.doc.extra thing have been fixed. Until then, especially as a mac newbie, SL meets my needs quite adequately, and for now at least, I'd rather have my mac run cooler and have a longer battery life than to run the latest and greatest OS. I decided for the time being to go back to snow leopard, but I backed up my lion install first onto a separate drive, just so I'd have it available in case of emergency. Anyway, I booted from my SL external drive with no problems, and have formated my macbooks internal hard dribe. Now, I'm trying to clone my SL drive back onto the internal drive, but CCC isn't working. I make all my selections, click the clone button, and then absolutely nothing happens. I get a system/growel notification that the copy is starting, but the window never changes. I've had this trouble before, but usually, after 1 or two attempts, the cloning actually begins. This time, no matter how many times I try, it just won't start. I have the latest version of CCC running; it wanted to update itself right when I was preparing to restore the internal HD. If anyone has any ideas what might be going on and how to fix it, I would really appreciate it. In the mean time, I can either boot from my sl external drive or the lion external drive, but my internal drive is blank as can be. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Re: Great new features in Lion
Hi David, This seems to be a recent development, and I call it a bug, myself. There is no need to notify me about spelling problems in an email that I am reading. I can't do anything about the spelling anyway. Here's a strange thing. I first saw this after upgrading to Lion, it never happened in snow leopard. . A while after I reverted to my backup of Snow Leopard, I installed the safari 5.1 update. Now I am getting the spelling notifications while reading messages in mail. My first reaction is, what in the world does a Safari update have to do with Mail? I think Mail must use safari's html rendering to display email messages since they can contain links, images, etc. This is the only explanation that makes even a little sense. The change that caused this must be in that part of safari somehow.. How do I turn of auto spellchecking in email. I don't admit to being a perfect speller, but to hear about supposed spelling errors when I am just reading mail is just a little too much. Re: Making Mail Easier with Activities
Austin, Thank you a million times. This is wonderful. This set of hotspots aught to come included with Voiceover. I can't believe I didn't think of that. As soon as I return to Lion this will be the first thing I set up. I have restored my system from my backup drive and am now on Snow leopard. I want to install the Safari 5.1 update for Snow Leopard to see if the annoying issues I am having are due to the new version of safari or something else in Lion. I'm probably staying with SL until this gets fixed in some way. The other little quirks I can live with but safari was killing me. Re: Making Mail Easier with Activities
That's exactly what it means. This makes hotspots an actually useful feature for a change. 10 hotspots aren't nearly enough system wide, but it's more than enough for one app. This is one of the best improvements in VoiceOver. command+tab in Lion?
Hi all, While trying Lion, I had a weird problem twice but I Can't reliably reproduce it. Has anyone else been in a situation where command+tab would not switch to other applications? The first time, a reset of voiceover took care of it. The next time, a reboot was required. While I'm writing, A quick word on the safari issues such as links sometimes not showing up, and heading navigation being unpredictable. After reverting to my snow leopard backup, I installed safari 5.1. Everything is fine. It must be related to something else that changed in Lion. Re: yorufukurou question
Hi richard, I know what you are referring to. Sometimes you find that a reply has been sent to your intended recipient but also to someone else that you weren't expecting. I think I've finally figured out why this happens. The problem is that pressing the right arrow key runs a command to quickly add other usernames to a reply without moving to the edit field. If there is a conversation between many users that you wish to reply to, you can press right arrow on each tweet from someone in the group, then press enter on the last one to start writing your reply. It's very easy to accidentally bump that key while doing other things, so when you do begin to write a reply, it has been addressed to one or two random people already. This doesn't happen to me as often as it used to. I've just learned to read the message once to make sure other usernames aren't in there. I think I'll write to the author and request the ability to modify the shortcuts, since I think mapping this command to the right arrow was a bad idea. Hopefully my explanation makes some sense. Re: bible desk top clients?
Hi, Unfortunately, I have not found any bible study software that is very accessible at all. However I have found a solution which is almost as good for me, and some might consider it to be better. Optasia ministries offers a free library of bible study material in alternative formats for blind people.. The library comes on a DVD, and you can copy the files to your hard drive to study whenever you want, or just read from the dvd. This library contains many different bible translations, and more commentaries and other reading material than you'll ever know what to do with. The files are mostly in RTF format that you can read in textedit, or in html format. At their web site, you can read a full list of what is included and find the phone number and email address to request a copy. Here is the link. http://www.optasiaministry.org/ I hope this is helpful. This really is a goldmine of good materials. Re: Flash to HTML5; Can it be done?
I can't remember if ClickToFlash is set to convert videos to html5 by default or not, so here's how to check. Press option+comma for the ClickToFlash preferences. At first I kept pressing command+comma for safari preferences and wondering where these settings were supposed to be. A frame will show up at the bottom of the page. Interact with the frame and press VO+space on html5 replacements. The categories will not appear as links but doing this still works. Make sure everything is checked. Now go back to the list of categories and press VO+space on media player. Check the box to load the media player automatically. I just thought of another trick to try if ClickToFlash is unable to play your videos. Some sites have an alternative interface for iOS devices, since they do not work with flash content. It is possible to have safari tell the site that you are on iOS. Press command+comma for safari preferences, and then go to the advanced settings. Check the box to show the develop menu in the menu bar, and then close preferences. In the develop menu, go to the user agent sub menu and choose any of the options to identify as an iOS device. The page will refresh, and just maybe present some more accessible form of video. Hope this was more helpful. I guess I could put up with this if I had to, since I can still understand exactly what should have been said, but I just thought I'd ask here before giving up. I've notified the developers, and I think they are working on it. However, I'm not sure it's feature set competes with YoruFukurou. I still would have liked to try it though. Re: Porting qwitter to mac?
You know, I am a huge fan of qwitter, and it has done a truly amazing thing for windows twitter users. I'm still devoted to it, and still volunteer to maintain the Readme even though I'm almost exclusively a mac person now. Having said that, I'm not sure I see why it is necessary to have a mac port of qwitter. There are several high quality mainstream twitter clients on the mac that work just great with voiceover. YoruFukurou has many of the features that I thought I would have to live without when I switched. One big advantage of qwitter would be much harder to do in OS X, unless lion fixes a particularly annoying issue. You have seen this if you use the speech output of growl, or even adium's built-in speech notifications. Whenever some other program has something it wants to speak, whatever voiceover is saying gets interrupted. On windows, if qwitter wants to announce that a new tweet has come in, it waits for a pause in the existing output, such as a gap between sentences. The current mechanisms for speaking text on OS X do not seem to provide any facilities for doing this. This annoying behavior is why I don't keep adium or skype signed in, because I'd lose my place just to be told that someone came online. This would be a dealbreaker for qwitter. Re: new Syrinx 2.4.3 and password issues
Hi, It is common for me not to hear a click for each key press in a password field. I don't even listen to the clicks anymore. I just assume it went through and most of the time it does. The faster you type, the more likely you are to see this behavior. It's not specific to any program either. As for syrinx, you can continue to use the old version, the only thing that will not work is your ability to receive direct messages. You need to authorize the new version for that to work. I'm not sure how to unlock twitter, other than to write to them and ask to have it reset. I don't know for certain which email address to use, but maybe try supp...@twitter.com. Re: Questions About VMWARE Fusion
Hi Geoff, I'm confused about these instructions for switching focus between Windows and the mac. It's nowhere near that complicated for me. When I command-tab out of fusion, I'm bak in the rest of my mac programs, just like switching from any other window. When I command-tab back into fusion, most of the time windows has the focus again. On those rare occasions when this isn't seamless, I just press VO-command-f5 to move the mouse to the VO cursor and then VO-shift-space to click the mouse. Is there a problem that I'm not aware of? Sorry for bringing this up again, I just recently rejoined the list. Thanks, Justin On Jul 1, 2011, at 3:04 PM, Geoff Shang wrote: On Thu, 30 Jun 2011, Ezzie Buenito wrote: After viewing many of your discussions, I've decided to try running Windows on my Macbook Pro with Fusion. No. You need to configure the VM and install Windows in it before you can install JAWS. VMWare Fusion is not Windows, it is only a program for running other operating systems under your main one. You will need a legitimate Windows installation CD. 2. Which key will be the Windows key? On a mac keyboard, the command key will be the Windows key, and the Option key will be the Alt key. Yes, that means they're backwards in comparison to a Windows keyboard. 3. How do I switch back to the Mac operating system? This is one of the tricky things about using Fusion. Visually, Windows is just another window on your computer. When the mouse is in that window, it's interacting with Windows, and when it's not, it's interacting with Mac OS. Now for us, it's a little more complicated. If you can see the mouse pointer, I believe you can click within or outside of the Windows window in order to change where the keyboard is focused. If you can't, moving to the Fusion window and pressing (I think) command-g is supposed to switch to Windows and control-command to switch it back. However, it's very difficult to make this work reliably. A thread a week or two back on this list discussed a number of ways to try and help make this more reliable, such as running VMWare in full-screen mode. But none of these remedies seemed to work for everyone. 4. When I start up the computer, which operating system will start up by default? Mac OS has to start, as VMWare and Windows will be running as a program on your mac, not as a stand-alone operating system. If you want to run Windows as a stand-alone operating system which you run *instead* of Mac OS, you need to use Boot Camp. Re: Facebook and clients
Well, I haven't used the facebook site much, because I seem to constantly get taken back to the top of the page. I can't remember what it is that I didn't like about the mobile site, so perhaps I should try it again. As for wanting to ignore the photo application, I suppose it depends on the people you know that use it. When I did use Facebook, I liked seeing photo posts because my friends are mostly kind enough to remember to add captions to their photos. Between the captions and the comments, it's easy to know what's going on and to participate in the resulting conversation. I also like seeing when someone adds new friends, because chances are reasonably good that it may be someone I know as well. This has helped me find several old friends who I didn't even think were on Facebook at all. Hello, I just downloaded the beta version. From an accessibility perspective, this is a total nonstarter. When I first run the downloaded application, I get a setup window, but Voiceover can not read anything. I have tried using standard Voiceover navigation commands, as well as using the tab and arrow keys to move around. The only thing I can read is the text eMusic download manager setup. DVD remaster and Mac DVD ripper pro seem to be fully accessible. It seems tech tool pro is inaccessible. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Looks like a great app. I think i'm missing something with hands off, it feels inaccessible but I might just not be understanding the layout. Anyone? I think App Tamer is accessible, once I understand how it works. Same for a better finder rename, looks accessible, but I need to dig into the documentation to understand it better. MacUpdate desktop is almost completely accessible. The table showing the download status does not read for some reason. You get a 6 month membership with the bundle. The first 1 orders also get a license for a program called divvy, but it doesn't seem to be accessible. I decided that even though not all of the applications are accessible, there's enough here to make this bundle worth the price for me. I'm especially glad to have DVD remaster and 1password. App tamer looks like it might be useful. MacUpdate Desktop is a nice bonus. If I'm not mistaken, DVD Remaster pro on it's own costs as much as the entire bundle. I won't even bother with the 1.7 gb extra download of Civilization iv. That's a 3d game and I wouldn't even expect it to be accessible. A question about partitioning an hard drive with existing data on it
Hi all, I was hoping to make a few partitions on the hard drive of my MaCBook Pro. I remember reading somewhere that in order to partition a hard drive that already contains data, it is necessary to format the drive first. Re: housekeping: set-up for replying to list
I personally would not like this at all. Most of the time, I want my reply to go to the list. I think that the default for the reply hotkey should be the most commonly preferred action. We would have people sending answers to questions only to the original poster. It would have to be explained to every new member that the reply button does not do what is generally expected on a list of this type. Some people don't even read the welcome message, since it's usually the same instructions. This would complicate more than it would solve. Please do not change how list replies work just to avoid a few one-line replies coming to the list. On Mar 1, 2011, at 11:09 AM, carolyn Haas wrote: Hi Alex: I think that would be a great solution. Re: blackboard and Safari
Hi Carolyn, I am just now getting used to the newly upgraded version of blackboard at my college. I don't know of any podcasts are tutorials, probably due to the wide variety of versions in use. Each new version of Blackboard has changes to the interface, and therefore the accessibility situation also changes. Some colleges are still using versions of blackboard from a few years ago due to the cost of upgrading or the desire to avoid having people trying to relearn the software. I'm somewhat familiar with blackboard 7.1, and a little less familiar with the new version 9.1. I haven't used all of the features in either one, but if one of these is the one you are concerned with then I can try to answer some of your questions. I've heard that blackboard version 8 might not be very accessible at all, but I have no direct experience. Sorry for the total non-answer, wish I could be more helpful. Re: Jailbreaking and some solutions?
I don't have any experience with jailbreaking myself. If I understand that article though, the base band check only effects people who unlock their iPhone. I don't like the way that stuff that changes springboard makes the phone unbootable though and whilst I don't know for sure, I'm assuming that things like 5 icon doc will change it. Also, I don't like the idea of safari not working. To be fair, your right though, I don't think my phones ever rebooted randomly or because of a crash, so perhaps I'm just being paranoid. The dev team recommended that I wait to upgrade, but I wanted to experiment. At any rate, when I want to reboot, all I do is put my phone in DFU mode and launch a file. My phone starts rebooting. I've never had to reboot my phone while out. Since writing the jb guides, I have found out more information on what a tethered jb entails. I've considered making this information part of jb101. Update #2 : The notion of a “tethered” jailbreak is pretty new to many people, so here’s a quick rundown on what to expect: 1 If you’re on an iPhone3G, old-bootrom iPhone3GS, or non-MC ipt2g, life is easy. redsn0w installed an untethered jailbreak and so nothing below applies. 2 “Tethered” does not mean you cannot boot at all without PC/Mac assistance. If you have not installed any tweaks that hook into important programs like SpringBoard or CommCenter, your device will actually boot. However, jailbreak programs like Cydia won’t work (and Cydia may still have a white icon). Also, certain built-in apps that had to be moved by Cydia will fail (Safari being the most noticeable example). 3 If you’ve installed MobileSubstrate tweaks that hook into SpringBoard or other important programs, your boot will actually fail (you’ll get stuck at the Apple logo). You need to use redsn0w to “Just boot tethered right now”. End of excerpt. For those of you who don't know what MobileSubstrate is, it's a dependency of Ultrasn0w, the iPhone dev team's unlocking software for iPhones. This means that you can't install Ultrasn0w without MobileSubstrate. My friend, who has a locked phone, was able to boot up just fine. I myself do not, so I cannot reboot without the assistance of my Mac. Most of you guys won't have that problem. On Jan 31, 2011, at 2:16 AM, James Malone wrote: Thanks! Re: Dropbox accessibility
I'm not sure what all this is about myself. I am a very happy user of Dropbox on the mac. When you first install it, there are some controls that VO initially identifies as unknown. However, interacting with them reveals the expected fields for logging in to dropbox. The unknowns appear to be some kind of custom container widget that they use for some reason, but it only slowed me down for a minute. Yes, there is that very annoying issue that VO can't get to the Dropbox menu to change the preferences, but this is not specific to this application and there doesn't seem to be anything Dropbox can do about it. Some people have posted alternative ways of locating the dropbox icon. However, with the 1.0 release, the preferences window is no longer accessible. They have acknowledged this regression and said they will be working on it. In summary, we have a minor inconsistency with the setup screen which is quickly worked around, the issue with the status bar icon which only Apple can fix, and the broken preferences window which Dropbox is working on. Re: can't send drop box to trash
Hi, To me, A prompt to enter your name and password to allow changes sounds more like a system dialog asking for the password to your account on your mac, rather than your dropbox password. It asks for your system password the first time you run it so that it can intigrate with the finder. After you enter it, this dialog won't come up anymore. As for stopping it from running, I had to do this once in order to install a new version of dropbox. There is a dropbox icon in the status menus that you have to select in order to exit the program. Voiceover can't see status menu icons for third party applications, so I had to have sighted assistance to do this. Someone posted a hint a while back though about how you can find this icon yourself. I seem to have lost my bookmark for the list archives at the moment. I must have deleted the wrong bookmark. iPhone and iPOD Touch differences?
Hi all, I'm curious what you all know about the differences between the iPhone4 and the iPod touch, other than the obvious phone capabilities of course. I've had my eye on the iPhone since shortly after getting a mac, and as anyone following me on twitter could tell you I kept a close eye on any rumors about when it would get to Verizon. Strangely, now that Verizon has finally made it official, I'm suddenly not sure. The idea of adding another $30 to my bill for a smartphone data plan is a little hard to swallow. From what I can tell, the iPod touch can run all of the same apps, and I'm satisfied with a phone that places calls and does text messaging. Of course the touch can only use wifi, but if I'm away from a wifi connection, I'm probably quite busy doing something and don't need those distractions anyway. From what I have been able to gather, the phone has a far better camera, which is only compelling if there is a great OCR app available to use it with. More important is that the iPOD doesn't appear to have GPS functionality. One would hope that standard bluetooth GPS receivers would work with the touch and allow the use of apps such as Navigon. If not, it would seem odd if there wasn't a GPS receiver among the hundreds of add-ons designed specifically for the iPOD touch. Does anyone know if this is possible? Other than these, what other differences have you guys noticed? Thanks, Justin -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Apple will not allow Verizon to preload software on iPhone
That is very good news. I personally was thinking that verizon would put their custom software all over the phone and I was concerned with whether it would be accessible. Again, Apple gets it right. Every new product that comes out there are accessibility questions, and it always plays out well. Re: Click to Flash Now Working with Audible
Hi Teresa, I think I see your problem. You certainly don't want to add audible to the whitelist. The whitelist tells click to flash to allow the site to load it's original flash content instead of converting or blocking it. It kind of feels backwards, but by adding a site to the whitelist you are disabling click to flash and letting the site do it's own thing. Hope this helps. Re: very peculiar behavior change with audible.com
Hi ray, I can confirm that I see this new behavior using click to flash, and that temporarily disabling the extension brings things back to the way they used to be. Either a recent click to flash update has added support for converting audible samples to html 5 elements, or the folks at audible have switched to using a different flash player that the extension already knows how to convert. Either way, this is excellent news. Thanks for the tip. On Dec 28, 2010, at 1:28 AM, Ray Foret Jr wrote: Just now, when I went to Audible.com I experienced something that never before happened. I opened the page, and, suddenly, all the samples on the page started to play at the same time. When they all finally stopped, I took a look at the page and noticed numorous audio element control tool bars all over the page. I mean they were all over the place. These audio element control tool bars are doubtless familiar to you if you've pressed VO+space on an mp3 file from say www.blindcooltech.com to play the file right off the servers. anyhow, I decided to take a closer look, so, I searched for a title I knew was there; I mean on the site. When I found the book I was looking for, I nnavigated to it and, guess what, next to the word sample, there was an audio element control tool bar. At this point, I would have to conclude that the people at audible have heard us and made some major change to their page so that we no longer need to use the mouse method to play samples. As a qualifier, I must hasten to add that I have the anti flash extension, (I forgot the proper name of it for the moment), and, when I looked at the settings I had made for it, I found that it was set to buffer and start playing the video content automatically. With this in mind, I have two questions. 1. For those of you who also have this flash extension, have y'all noticed this difference in audible.com? 2. Re: google chrome and voiceover
Hi William, I checked this out a few days ago myself. The accessibility of google chrome is still being developed. I recently took a look at the web page on their bug tracker that lists the open accessibility issues. There were at least 5 or 6 bugs that specifically relate to voiceover. Re: can I make audio cd's of iTunes purchased music
Hi Marlaina, I'm not sure what the situation was like a couple years ago, but I think iTunes always allowed people to burn their music onto a CD, if maybe only a limited number of times. However, as of January 2009, iTunes removed drm protection from all of the music that they sell. You can burn your Music to CD, transfer it to any computer or portable player that you have, or convert it from the original m4a format to mp3. There is no longer any restriction. Re: abisee eyepal now works with Mac and is on sale today only for $1275
Hi Buddy, Interestingly, I use ProtectMac antivirus, and had to wait while the dmg was scanned after downloading. I could see the file names inside the .app bundle as the scan progressed through the disk image. There was a wine directory with a bunch of dll files in it. It seems to be running the eye-pal software inside a windows emulator. That seems a little odd to me, but it explains why it runs under x11 and separately from voiceover. It will still be totally usable, so there's no problem with this. I just found it surprising and interesting purely from a technical perspective. However they do it, I'm glad that there's something I can run on the mac without firing up a full virtual machine. This is an improvement. On Nov 26, 2010, at 4:26 PM, Buddy Brannan wrote: Well, good news for me. Apparently, all I had to do to use the Zoomex was to download the software and install it. I really got a good deal, someone was selling their barely used Zoomex, about a year or 18 months old, had to move it, so I got a steal. That, plus $200 to get up to the latest version of the software, and I came out way ahead. No upgrade cost for the Mac version is even better. Some preliminary observations, in case anyone's giving the Eyepal or Zoomex some thought: The software is a self-voicing environment. It's written under X-Window, apparently, and runs in that environment. Therefore, it's completely separate from Voiceover, and generally speaking, its controls are inaccessible using Voiceover. Further, it uses the same Nuance Realspeak Solo voices that the PC version does, and also uses the same or similar commands to the Windows version. If you're familiar with the Windows version, it appears that moving straight across to the Mac will be fairly easy and straightforward. One thing that threw me at first and wasn't exceedingly well documented was that you get to the Zoomex (and, presumably, Eyepal) menu with the cmd key, much as you'd use the alt key to pull down the menu in Windows. It looks like their design decision was to make the softwre on the Mac look and act like the software on Windows, so the documentation could be pretty well pulled straight across with little to no alteration; in fact, Zoomex for the Mac even mentions that you won't need JAWS. I haven't tried a scan yet, but I fully expect that it will work just like theWindows version of the software. -- Buddy Brannan, KB5ELV - Erie, PA Phone: (814) 860-3194 or 888-75-BUDDY On Nov 26, 2010, at 3:14 PM, Mary Otten wrote: For those who are curious and have lots of money, the above subject line says it all. Re: Apple TV and Netflix?
Hi Donna, If I'm understanding the situation correctly, there are two ways to watch movies on the Apple TV. The first involves renting movies or tv shows through Apple. if you do things this way, you don't need a subscription to netflix since you aren't dealing with them at all. The other option is to watch movies through netflix. In this case you have a monthly subscription to the service, but you are not charged separately for each rental. The catalog of content available through iTunes may have some items not available yet on netflix, or the other way around. If I had an apple TV, I'd probably do much of my viewing through netflix for no extra charge, and then check the Apple catalog if I couldn't find something I wanted on netflix. The Apple site makes it seem that you can only connect this thing to an HD Television. I still only have a basic Standard Definition TV, so if this is the case I'll have to say no thanks to this unit. Does anyone know if you can use this with an older Television? Re: Any chance to get plain text with embedded tables announced by Vo correctly?
No, pages doesn't do any better about reading tables with voiceover. This is a constant annoyance and until recently, it caused me to start fusion much more than I anticipated. For several of my classes, the syllabus is provided in a word document. Everything reads fine except for the schedule of assignments. I can open the document in textedit, bean, or pages but voiceover doesn't correctly speak the table with the schedule. So I was booting the virtual machine just to check the schedule twice a week with jaws. Finally I realized a simple solution. I let textedit save the files as web pages. Voiceover reads most of these tables just fine in safari. I still have a couple documents that this didn't help, but I only have to look at those monthly. Re: [Bulk] Re: accessible flash eextention blocks youtube videos heelp!
Hi Ray, Checking load video player automatically doesn't necessarily defeat the purpose. The next option determines what the video player will do once it has been loaded. You have 3 options, do not buffer, start buffering, or start buffering and begin playback. I chose to start buffering. Now the video is ready to be played should I decide to do so. This removes a step from the process, you don't have to click on the flash placeholder first to load up the player. Hope this helps. Re: accessible click to flash
Hi Allison, By adding youtube.com to the whitelist, you are telling click to flash to enable all flash on the page instead of turning it into accessible html5. You aren't seeing the video element controller because click to flash is ignoring youtube and letting it play the videos in flash. So by adding a site to the whitelist, it is if you don't have the extension installed at all when you visit the page. On Nov 6, 2010, at 11:16 AM, Allison Manzino wrote: Hi Nektarios, I discovered that on Youtube, you have to add youtube.com to the white list of accepted sites within Click to Flash under extensions. Does anyone have experience with a product called radio shark
Hi ALl, I'm going to break one of my own rules here. I rarely write to a list to ask if something is accessible, I'll just download it and try the demo. On the mac, your chances are quite high that it will work with voiceover. In this case however, the software is included as part of a product, and there's no way to try it out first. Radio Shark is an AM/FM radio receiver that you control with your computer. It can also record the radio for future listening. I'd like to have this since a few local stations do not stream online. Also if they do stream, they shut the stream down during baseball games or other programming where their contract requires this. So I'm wondering if anyone has used this. If so, is the included software accessible? For anyone else that wants to investigate, the web page for this product is at the below link, but you can get it for less at amazon.com. Re: Does anyone have experience with a product called radio shark
Hi Esther, Thanks for the information. If the software was accessible back then, I wouldn't expect that they changed it much with the newer radio shark2. An apparently accessible alternative to flash.
Hi all, I've stumbled across something that might just be very useful indeed. This is a safari extension called click to flash. Apparently it started out as a way to replace any flash content with a placeholder element. All flash would be disabled unless you click on this to enable selected content. Anyway, at some point they developed a feature that replaces flash videos with an html5 alternative whenever possible. For example, this works on pages that contain embedded videos from sites like youtube and vimeo. I've tried this on a few sites, and it is totally accessible. Where the video would be, you instead get an element that Voiceover identifies as clickable. Press VO space, and you get a video toolbar. Interact with it to play, pause, mute etc. It's very nice. Here is the link to the extension. http://hoyois.github.com/safariextensions/clicktoflash/ Hope someone finds this useful. Re: An apparently accessible alternative to flash.
If you haven't done so already, close all of your safari windows and then start safari again. Here's how to locate the click to flash options after you restart safari. In the extensions section of the preferences window, after the checkbox for enabling extensions, you'll find an extensions list. Interact with it and find click to flash. I've found that sometimes it's enough to hit VO space on the name of the extension, but occasionally I have to press vo shift f5 followed by vo shift space to click on the name. Stop interacting with the list and the settings will be right after the uninstall button. Hope this helps. Looking for recommendations of external keyboards
Hi all, I'm starting to wish that the keyboard on this MacBook pro had a numpad. It would be useful to have the numpad commander. I'm thinking about getting an external keyboard that has one included. This may sound strange, but instead of adding another full-size keyboard, does anyone make such a thing as an external numpad? If not, I'd like to hear your recommendations for keyboards. I'd like one that uses the apple layout with the command and option keys. Re: move adict promo
Hi Jeff, The program will run as a demo until you get your code. If I understand correctly, you can only move a single item at a time in demo mode. I don't know if this means that you couldn't copy a folder with multiple files in it. As for the inaccessibility of the preference menu, this is not a showstopper. The developer has created a separate application for Voice Over users to launch the same preferences window. Just copy both applications into the applications folder and you'll be good to go. Re: Apple's event next wednesday
I have three enhancements that I'd like to see in voiceover with the release of 10.7. I don't expect VO to be covered in that much detail during this particular event, we'll probably read about the VO changes on the web site as the release gets closer. I'd like to see them make it possible to access the status menu icons of other applications. Dropbox is one example of an application that puts an icon in this menu that can't be accessed with voiceover. We can only access the default icons like the clock, battery status, etc. Also, I haven't yet seen a way to navigate tables within word documents or pdf files. If I understand things correctly, wasn't it very difficult to read tables in web pages until the release of 10.6? Maybe this can be done for other documents as well. Finally, I'd really like to see the possibility of setting different preferences for each application. For example, I might want a different level of verbosity in a particular application. Other than that, i would love to see a better translation to Swedish of Voiceover and the feature that the old Outspoken had, namely theability to know where the cursor was, by hearing a beep when you spell a word, so that if you had the word browser for example and you are in the middle of the word, just between the w and s, you could hear b r o w beep s e r and if you then went one step to the right with the cursor, it'd go b r o w s beep e r and so on. Viewing pdf files that contain tables?
Hi all, I am trying to read a pdf that I just downloaded. It contains a listing of contact information that appears to be formatted as a table. This is not working well in preview. Voiceover reads the entire first column, and then starts the second column. This is very difficult since there are almost 100 rows in the table. I hear all of the names, then the addresses, then the phone numbers. This site doesn't have any other file format for this information. Is there any way I can get voiceover to read this? The pdf2rtf service renders the data the same way. This is the first time I've encountered anything that I could read on windows but not in OSX. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Re: Pdf2rtf service
Hi Scott, In my original post I mentioned my first experience with this. Yes I have used it and it works very well. You wouldn't even know that there was something going on in the background, it just feels like textedit supports pdf files directly. It's very impressive. The reason the reviews are dated is because the service hasn't been updated since 2007. It's functionality is complete and there is no need to update it, unless a future version of OSX happens to change the API that it uses. Re: Fixing iTunes
Hi Colin, I just went through this process a few days ago, in fact I had a large number of compilation albums to fix in this way. It is possible to select all of the tracks in an album, bring up the track info dialog and set the part of a compilation checkbox. It will apply to all of the selected tracks. I didn't see it at first, but that was because I almost didn't notice that the setting was on a different tab of the dialog. It was quite easy at that point. Just wanted to let you know that it does work. Justin On Oct 2, 2010, at 9:08 AM, Colin M wrote: Hi Sarai! If I get what you mean I've had the same thing the only suggestion I can make is... When you have done each track it will pull them together under 1 album, under various artists! Also my [ personal choice ] some of my albums have an artist on just one of the tracks who is not the main artist, and also gets put in there own album! What I do there is go to info again and edit the artist field and remove the guest artist then scroll down and press ok then that 1 track ends up back in the main album! Re: Speaking of Safari and Google
Hi Genny, I don't know what might be different in OSX10.5, but here are some things you can try. This is all totally guesswork though. I haven't seen this on google, but I have experienced other situations where things that should have been clickable were not, and this trick helps sometimes. While focused on the heading, try interacting with it. Since the link element is inside the header element, this older voiceover may need to interact with the heading to see it. If that does not work, you could try running a nightly build of webkit. This will include the newer accessibility fixes that made it into the version of safari that came with OSX 10.6 and then some. Since it's a development version, there's always a chance of instability but the recent builds work fine for me. If it's a safari problem, this will solve it. If it's something wrong with the older voiceover itself then it won't help. The address for the nightly webkit builds is http://nightly.webkit.org Hope you get this working. Assigning keys in keyboard commander
Hi All, I was attempting to create some more custom key assignments in the keyboard commander, and I believe I may have come across an interesting limitation. At first glance, it appears that you cannot assign commands to special keys, such as the function or arrow keys. If the key does not produce output when typed into an edit field, it can't be used in this way. I attempted to type the characters f12 into the field, hoping that it would understand that I wanted to use the function key. Instead it complained that the input could only be one character. The right option key with the few function keys farthest to the right would have made for some convenient one-handed shortcuts. It's not a big deal though, I can always find other keys to use. I just found it interesting and thought I'd see if anyone has found a way to do this. . Re: Microsoft Office 2011 and VoiceOver
I have found a free word processor that has just enough extra features over textedit to make it sufficient for most of my writing needs in college. The program's name is bean. I don't have a feature list in front of me, but I do remember the address of the site. http://www.bean-osx.com I remember not being particularly impressed by the feature list on the site, but I was curious enough to read the change log for a little more detail. I realized that though it doesn't have all of the power of pages, it has those few little extra things that textedit lacked for my needs. For those interested in iwork, amazon.com is selling it for $49.99 which is about $30 less than retail and you get free shipping. Hope someone finds this information helpful. Justin On Sep 27, 2010, at 5:15 AM, Rose Morales wrote: The problem with something like Notepad is that notepad can only write text files. This is fine if you're just looking to jot down a note or ten. Hence the name notepad, :). MS Word is designed to let you format your text. Now, one could use Wordpad, but that doesn't have a spellchecker. Furthermore, MS Word is able to handle some pretty advanced word processing features: indices, table of contents, table of figures, table of authorities, outlines, bulleted lists, subdocuments, styles, track changes, tables, charts, simple excel calculations and formulas, mail merge, envelope labeling, and probably more I'm not thinking of. WHile your average MS Word user might not even know half of these features exist, there are others who simply cannot live without them. Personally, having taken a course in Office, I can certainly appreciate the idea of MS Word for mac. An awesome word processor on an even more awesome OS? That sounds lovely. Too bad that won't happen for awhile. With that being said, let's look at some of Pages notable features: numerous preloaded templates, the ability to create custom templates, easy insertion of headers and footers, styles, track changes, mail merge, footnotes, endnotes, bookmarks, tables, charts, and formulas. And Pages has the ability to export not only to word documents but epub, rtf, PDF, and html. You can't save as .docx yet, which is a pity, but you can open .docx files just fine. I'm not saying all this to suggest that everyone immediately love Pages. We can all agree it lacks some features which word has. Honestly, my first instinct is to fire up Word when I'm doing some intense document writing and editing. And I'm a hard core Mac girl. For my every day writing, I use Text Edit, and I love it. I call it WOrdpad on steroids because Wordpad doesn't have a spellchecker, the ability to save to PDF, or the ability to implement basic styles. At any rate, what I am suggesting is that we as Mac users (those of us with Pages at least) step back and say, okay, Pages isn't word. But what can it offer me? Is there some word processing I could be doing in Pages which I previously only did in Word? And if we don't know the answer, why not try creating that document in Pages when we're not on a time crunch? We might just surprise ourselves. Does your system have an SD card slot? I know for example that the MacBook does not while the MacBook pro does. If you have an SD slot then there is no reason to connect the stream to the computer. In fact, you will find that transfers go much faster if you just insert the card. There is a button in the fusion window to add the card reader to your virtual machine. If you do not have a SD slot, there are USB card readers that don't cost very much at all. The program is aurora, and the web site is http://www.metakine.com/products/aurora/ There's a 14 day trial, and then the price is $14.95. I'm glad I went to look this up for you, or I would have been very surprised in a couple days when the alarm didn't go off.. I didn't notice that this was shareware. LOL. Anyway, as far as I can tell, this program depends on your iTunes library. It plays music from your library as the alarm. The volume can be set at a particular level, or it can gradually raise it until you get up or until it reaches the maximum. That's a very nice motivator for me when I'd rather not get up. I hope you find this useful. Justin On Sep 25, 2010, at 8:19 PM, li...@kevinreeves.net wrote: Yes. I've been looking for something like this as well as an alarm clock. Getting applications out of the command-tab order?
Hi all, I have done very well in adjusting to the Mac by remembering the advice that I was reading everywhere before I made the switch. Don't assume that anything will work like it does on windows. Now, nearly two months into this, there is only one windows behavior that I really miss. There are some applications that I would like to have running in the background, but don't necessarily want their windows open unless I need them. Let's take adium and skype as one type of example. I want to be available, but unless I have an incoming call or instant message, I want them to stay out of my way. If I am using a few applications, I don't want to have to command+tab past things that are currently irrelevant. I've finally stopped adium and skype from loading on login because they have become a nuisance. I was hoping that you could send applications to the doc, similar to the system tray in windows. I see a hide option in the menu of most applications, but this seems to be more similar to minimizing an application in windows since command-tab brings it right back up again. Am I correct that there is no way to do something like this, or am I just missing it? Thanks, Justin -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. I started seeing crashes on the ESPN site with yesterday's build, but it seems to be better today. It seems that whatever is wrong is being worked on. Re: Blackboard, anyone?
My college still uses blackboard 7.1 and it doesn't use flash at all anywhere. It's very accessible on the Mac, though as someone pointed out the discussion forums are slightly tricky. Re: Need Mac User's advice on which Windows screen reader to purchase and learn
While I actually found office 2007 to be just as accessible and usable as anything else on windows, I agree that it is more pleasant to do anything on the Mac. I was intimately familiar with XP but don't know Windows 7 at all. Are they similar enough that I should get Windows 7, or should I try to get XP so that I don't have to learn a new operating system along with the new screen reader? 5. I will probably only need to use Windows for the next 2 years and most of my work will still be done on the Mac. Re: webkit question
Actually, webkit remembers this setting after upgrading. You only have to change that setting once. I install every new build and never have to redo this. Speaking of upgrading every night, The only thing I would say about webkit is that I would like to have an option to see a list of changes between each build. I know that the list would be automatically generated from the log messages that developers write when submitting changes. These would probably be very technical messages, but even if I don't entirely understand what I'm reading I could still guess whether a change might be very experimental in nature. If it's a significant change I might hold off on upgrading for a few days in case there are bugs. Hi Mike, I did recently install growl, but Adium isn't set to use it for any notifications. The other tip about turning off groups in the view menu solved it perfectly. For some reason, adium installs an old version of growl, but upgrading to the latest version improved the way growl interacts with voiceover. In fact, in the display settings there is an option to speak growl notifications instead of showing them on screen. I have this turned on so that if some future application doesn't have it's own option for speaking events, I can have it use growl if that is an option. While I'm writing, I want to thank you for your incredible series of podcasts. Hearing you demonstrate things helped to clarify stuff that I had read in other places. I had almost decided on a Mac already, but your podcasts settled the issue. These files should be put together in one place, and prominently linked on sites dealing with voiceover. VMWare fusion, was Re: Flash
Hi Paul, I'm glad you mentioned this. I am planning to use fusion occasionally and I've got a question. According to the documentation, their migration assistant may not work on an OEM version of Windows that comes with a computer. So even though I have a valid, licensed copy of windows on my old laptop, fusion can't move it into a virtual machine because It's only licensed to that computer. Does anyone know where to find the best deal on a legitimate copy of windows? Anything from XP onward will work. It's too bad that I have to do this in the first place. I'd rather abandon Windows, but my Information Technology degree requires classes on Microsoft office 2007. And now I learn that I have to buy Windows all over again for my new mac because of licensing rules. Another reminder of why I'm switching. Does anyone know of any software that can automatically keep a folder on the hard drive synchronized with the SD card from the stream? If I add or remove anything from either location, I'd like that to be automatically reflected on the other side the next time I insert the card.
