If it cracked the windshield, it's SERIOUS hail damage.

Reminds me, I've got to do something about the new/sacked out springs on the
S420.
The boxes said Lesjofors, the car sat a little high when I put it together,
dropped
to level overnight, and was almost as bad as the broken original springs after
one
mile. That was four months ago, now it's worse than the broken springs.

Re: [MBZ] If it looks like crack it might be crack

2015-09-10 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Dent Wizard is not a fix all kind of thing.. In my own experience, I bought
a new 2002 Ford F 350 Diesel 4 door, 4X4 pickup, Out the door price a bit
over $58,000, full coverage insurance [of course].

Fast forward 60 days, hail storm, windshield cracked in two places.. 18
hail dents in roof, 22 in hood. New windshield, new hood.. Dent Wizard
repair on roof damage cost ran a bit over $3,400, plus shop labor to remove
/ replace headliner to access bottom of dents. Total dent repair cost for
roof alone came to over $4,200.

The truck bed was saved because it had a fiberglass camper shell on it
which was also replaced. Total bill after two weeks in shop came to a bit
over $11,000.

I would expect shop rates have gone up since 2002, so to repair the hail
damage on this vintage Mercedes, out of pocket costs would run something
above that number, so a $6,000 purchase + say, $12,000 repair and
repaint...

My neighbor in Houston bought his in-laws' car that had been in a huge
Texas hail storm, looked like little league batting practice had taken
place on it. The inlaws got some few $k from the insco, used that to
buy another car, and sold the beater to the SIL. He didn't really care
as the car ran well, was fairly new and he figured it would get beat
around more anyway. It was one of those roundy dodge or chrysler

Re: [MBZ] wagon build

2015-09-10 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
In my case, I didn't realize the springs were different until about three
months after I bought them. I sent a message to the eBay seller and they wanted
all the details as far as application. When that didn't pan out, they got
Lesjofors involved. Despite photographs of the springs side by side clearly
showing they were different, Lesjofors just threw their hands up and said I
must have had some sort of one-off version of a W140. I disputed that by
showing them the EPC page with my VIN showing the proper MB part number, which
they said it was in their application guide.

Never heard back from them. Fortunately, the seller was really good about
taking them back and was involved in the whole process of trying to sort things
out.

In my case, the stock spring was flared out towards the top by a good inch or
more. The spring that Lesjofors said was the correct one was the same diameter
the whole length of the spring. They even checked the others they had for W140
applications and said that none of them were like mine.

That's been my first foray into MB springs. It just reinforced the lesson of
going to the dealer for the part.

[MBZ] The demise pf Pruis h*ters

2015-09-10 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
AUTOS:Toyota unveils a Prius that moves beyond 50 mpg with a sleeker design

Published: Thursday, September 10, 2015

In Japan in 1997, Toyota, at the time a medium-sized force in a U.S. car
market still dominated by Detroit's Big Three, launched the
first-generation Prius. It was the first mass-produced hybrid and a seminal
blueprint to a new type of car.

On Tuesday evening in Las Vegas, Toyota unveiled the latest iteration of
the car that helped move a middle-of-the-pack automaker in the United
States toward an automotive hegemony worldwide: the fourth-generation 2016
Prius, which will hit showrooms next year.

"For almost two decades, we've been selling Prius. We've changed the
industry with this car, and each generation we've made a little bit better
and a little bit better," Bill Fay, group vice president and general
manager of one of Toyota Motor Corp.'s U.S. divisions, said to a Las Vegas
crowd Tuesday night.

Toyota introduces the fourth-generation Prius. Photo courtesy of Toyota.

The 2016 model is not simply an updated version, but a new car housed
within new bodywork and built on a new suspension and platform, among other
changes. The front, not unlike the high cheekbones of a runway model, is
more angular than the third-generation and the hatch and rear setup are
boxier than before.

The new car will average 10 percent better performance in combined fuel
economy than the third-generation vehicles, which average about 50 mpg,
Toyota said. It will also be the first vehicle to be produced worldwide
through the Toyota New Global Architecture system, a method designed to
save money on common car parts across the company's fleet.

John O'Dell, senior editor for alternative vehicles at Edmunds.com, who was
at the Las Vegas rollout, said Toyota officials confirmed the 10 percent
mpg improvement.

"I think they'll do better than that," he said while driving back from the
announcement. "I think they're under-promising."
Searching for a broader market

Gasoline-and-electric hybrids are mainstream now, O'Dell said, noting that
fears years ago -- such as the concern that drivers would have to spend
thousands of dollars to replace expensive batteries -- have faded away.

"A hybrid is a known commodity now," he said. "There's nothing scary, odd
or unusual about hybrids."

With this sleeker Prius, he said, Toyota is trying to tap into a new pool
of customers. "It's not a compliance car," he said, using the term for cars
manufactured solely to meet environmental regulations. "It's now a car for
everyone." O'Dell added: "It's going to be sold everywhere, and I think
[Toyota will] push hard everywhere."

Longer and wider than its predecessors, the fourth-generation model is
about an inch lower, too. The car's "lower center of gravity and a more
responsive suspension," Toyota said, will "dial up the driving excitement"
without "sacrificing ride quality and occupant comfort."

Critiques of the Prius line have long hinged upon the notion that drivers
forfeit looks, responsiveness, handling and overall performance for
eco-friendly fuel economy. Toyota is clearly aware of that criticism.
A 'no-compromise vehicle'

After the newly revealed model landed on the stage Tuesday -- it had been
suspended by cables many feet above in a quick-but-glitzy announcement -- a
voice came over the speakers.

"A striking new look, smarter technology and unrivaled fuel economy, all in
a package that's more fun to drive than ever," the voice said. "It will
challenge everything you know about hybrids." Fay added: "It's really a
no-compromise vehicle."

Despite a market in which consumers are flocking to light trucks and
heavier cars, due to lower gas prices and flagging demand for fuel-saving
motor vehicles, O'Dell predicted the car will likely silence naysayers (
*ClimateWire* ,
Sept. 8).

"It's always been a knock on the Prius that it's pretty numb," he said.
"This should end those criticisms."

Toyota, the second-largest automaker globally (behind Volkswagen AG and
ahead of General Motors Co.) and the third-largest nationally (behind GM
and Ford Motor Co.), is billing the new Prius as a partner for its
fuel-cell car, the Mirai.

In a statement yesterday, the company said the car "stands side by side
with its sibling, the hydrogen powered Mirai, poised to change the game yet
again." On sale in Japan, the Mirai is scheduled to be unveiled in
California this year.

The Lesjofors catalog info on the ebay listings seems dodgy.
For some years, including 97, they list the same spring for the S500 and S420
For other years, they list the same spring for S320 and S420.
I'd seen comments on Benzworld that the S500 springs were too stiff and made the
car ride high.
The EPC had 3 springs, and for my car specified the weakest spring with 3 nub or
4 nub spacers.

So I bought the "S320" springs on eBay (which were $50-60 cheaper than the
"S500") and 4 nub
spacers from the dealer.
The result was the only bad spring experience I've ever had in my life, not that
I've
replaced many coil springs. Maybe I should have used JC Whitney springs like I
did when I put
the trailer hitch on my Plymouth Horizon. I think I went to Carquest when my '95
Taurus broke
a spring.

I do still need to contact Lesjofors and see what, if anything, they will do. If
they tell
me I have counterfeit springs, I'm going to kick myself $113 worth for not doing
something
through Paypal/eBay in a timely fashion.

I contacted the eBay seller, who wanted specific info on my car to check and see
if I bought
the "right" springs. I sent him the whole story, beginning with the model, year,
and VIN.
He responded that I sent him a blank message. I replied again, and he never
responded.
Looking back on it, I wish I'd filed an eBay complaint at that point.

The sensible system for a hybrid is what diesel locomotives use, a series
hybrid where the diesel engine runs right in the sweet spot in its power band
or not at all. The Chevy Volt is, as far as I know, the only series hybrid car
on the market but its hindered by being a Chevy...
Pisten Bully makes a series hybrid snow grooming machine. Supposed to save fuel
over the conventional type machine. I *think* the savings on that one come from
powering the tracks directly with electric motors instead of hydraulics like
the conventional units use. Considering the snowmobile club I'm affiliated with
has a 1984 Pisten Bully (which shows no signs of dying) now I expect to get my
hands on a hybrid unit around 2050...

So, the real question is "why did you leave Hawaii?"

RB

I ask that daily each winter.

PRH is loko also, but outside of Oahu, their tentacles are fewer.

My company was making money, the parent company was losing money,
their parent was nearly bust from losing money but they owned
thousands of acres and the house i lived in. the middle company had a
salary freeze. the parent of the parent almost doubled the rent on
the house i lived in. That amounts to a drastic pay cut. So I left.
There was no way to get ahead. But I could have survived probably,
and been happy, but SWMBO did not take the rent hike well, or the
skools.

I really liked driving the 200D around on the island. 60 miles to
Hilo or 60 miles to Kailua. I tried to drive it up to the observatory
at the summit of Mauna Kea, but it started getting warm at the 10,000
ft elevation area with 6 people aboard, so we turned around rather
than risk the engine with another 3000 ft of elevation to go.

The escort went up the mountains to visit Herb Kane a few times. Herb
created the jolly green giant back in the 50s and is a legend in HI.
The 200D never visited Herb, but I suspect he would have liked it.

I have only been to Hawaii once - 3 years ago.
We stayed in Kona but did the bus tour around the island so I have been
to Hilo, albeit briefly.
We were there for my elder son's wedding. On Hawaii from Dec 27/12 to
Jan 3/13 and then flew to Oahu and came left there about midnight on the
8th. Did not do a circle tour of Oahu which I wish we had.
Beautiful place. Not sure what it would be like to live there all the
time but might be willing to try it if I ever hit the big lottery!
Going to go back this year in January and take the cruise that goes from
island to island over a week and then spend a few more days in Honolulu
before we come home.

My elder son and his wife did the observatory tour up the mountain.

You mention some places I haven't been since my youth, I'm sure the roads are

Once in the '70s, we set out for summer vacation, probably going to drive from
Ogema WI to northern MN to visit grandparents. My father wanted to drive his
really nice Adenauer. We got a few miles down Highway 86, and hit some nasty
road construction; the pavement was gone and all traffic was squeezed onto
rough loose gravel. My dad listened to that gravel beating the underside of
the car for about 5 seconds, stopped and did a U-turn, got in a cursing match
with the road crew for driving in their road bed during the turn, and went
straight back home. We unpacked the Benz and loaded into some beater American
iron, and took that instead.

Sadly Cirilli's has been closed for quite a few years, and now they
are tearing down the building for "progress." I loved Cirilli's,
your SWMBO would have liked it too. Great place to buy Italian
pasta, great olive oil and other goodies. I worked there one summer.
Mamma Cirilli said my Italian bread was the closest to "home" of any
she had in her long life the USA. I consider that to be the best
compliment I've ever received. Italian bread needs good flour, dry
dough, and lots of time, along with TLC and patience.

Re: [MBZ] wagon build

2015-09-10 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
I am thinking of going 87. Can't bring myself to hot rod the 85 and thereby
reduce whatever value it has to virtually nothing.

Which begs the question, what does a totally rust-free 85 tdt with a new
tranny, rebuilt turbo and top end go for these days with everything but the
center vents working and newish paint? It is actually almost a fast car;
goes like hell after the new head and turbo. Been running synthetic since
82k; has 189k now. Interior presentable but could use new carpet in back
and passenger front. Headliner is fine, sunroof manual, no vacuum leaks.
Basically totally functional but no blow from center vents so I guess that
is next. AC cold, new controller. Yada yada. You get the idea; very good
shape.

Re: [MBZ] The demise pf Pruis h*ters

2015-09-10 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes

I like the idea of having a back-up fossil fuel engine in
a hybrid, I just wish they'd use a sensible Diesel engine

The strength of a diesel is at partial throttle, which is
not necessary in a series hybrid. I think the _best_ series
hybrid would be a small turbine engine. Turbines, gas,
and diesels are all approximately equally efficient at
full throttle. Turbines suck at throttle response. That
is not necessary in a battery charger in a series hybrid.
So, fixed-speed running in its sweet spot, that's a turbine.

A turbine would be really small, and doesn't need a liquid
cooling system. (Just a little oil cooler.) At fixed RPM
you could really quiet it as well. Co-gen for cabin heat
would also be nice.

GM ruined the American Diesel market in late 70's with their "Diesel" engine
cobbled from blocks barely good enough to combust gasoline reliably - tried

Diesel engines for power generation, locomotives and long-distance trucks
since mid-thirties, but they, suddenly, could not build one suitable for a

Nope. Even on a new car I could probably save enough in LA to have it shipped.

In 1990 when I shipped the escort (Diesel Content) it was the same
from any port on the west coast, and based on weight/volume formula.
I think the escort was around $1100. I chose Seattle, because I like
it better and it was closer to WI where the car was. Drove it out
there with 55 speed limits in 2 days, back to back Ironbutt days of
over 1000 miles each.

Montana never ends at 55 mph. it is bad at 70-75, but interminable at 55.

Peak oil, that reminds me, another ridiculous scare-monger theory that
reality has dispatched for those impervious to reason. Wait ten or twenty
years and there will be a new one to replace AGW or climate change or
whatever they call it these days. RUG was $1.849 today, and I see ULSD
around $2.299 down to $2.199. I wonder how much lower prices will go, I
think this current rapid drop is due to the storage facilities reaching
maximum capacity and now the owners have no choice but to sell the produced
oil at market prices, and the market is setting a more correct price now.

I ask that daily each winter.

PRH is loko also, but outside of Oahu, their tentacles are fewer.

My company was making money, the parent company was losing money,
their parent was nearly bust from losing money but they owned
thousands of acres and the house i lived in. the middle company had
a salary freeze. the parent of the parent almost doubled the rent on
the house i lived in.

I tried to drive it up to the
observatory at the summit of Mauna Kea, but it started getting warm
at the 10,000 ft elevation area with 6 people aboard, so we turned
around rather than risk the engine with another 3000 ft of elevation
to go.

The escort went up the mountains to visit Herb Kane a few times.
Herb created the jolly green giant back in the 50s and is a legend in
HI. The 200D never visited Herb, but I suspect he would have liked
it.
