Re: [MBZ] 603 timing chain

2011-01-06 Thread Max Dillon
It's really not hard at all, and if you spring for the special tool which
holds the chain against the cam shaft gear (about $40 or so I think), the
risk of losing (loosing? Help me out here Rich) one or both ends of the
chain down the front engine cover is zero. Don't forget to replace the
gasket for the cross-over pipe, and consider a new valve cover gasket.
Also, I highly recommend a new seal for the chain tensioner.

Cut/grind off a pin to break the chain, attach new chain to end of old, roll
new chain in by rotating the engine clockwise while pulling the old chain
out, and install new master link.

Twice I've installed new chain master links using a ball peen hammer instead
of the special chain crimper, and had no issues with either event. I use a
10 lb maul as a hanging anvil against the back of the link, and an 8 oz ball
peen hammer to tap-tap-tap about 100 times or so until the end of the new
pin is nicely mushroomed. The maul serves to absorb the force of the
tap-tap-tap so you don't break the cam shaft gear.

I have plenty of tools, and beer, and food. Also I can do VW diesel belts

A mity-vac will be very useful for figuring out things vacuum related. Does
this car have the evil Chrysler servo ACC system? If yes, then the Unwired
tools solution may be a good choice, if you have the $$. Pressing the
defrost button on the control is supposed to cause four things to happen:
Fan on high, heat on full, AC compressor on, and resulting
heated/de-humidified air directed to the windshield.

Well, I'm ashamed that after all the help you guys offered to try and
resolve our vac issues that we are once again heating our car with the
defroster fan this winter
We tried various changes on the lines coming out of the firewall into
the engine compartment. You may or may not recall, when we bought our
car, it had several vac lines to the right of the brake unit just
dangling and connected to NOTHING. We just don't know what all was
changed or bypassed and why! Still would like to see pics of correct
connections. I know there is an issue with the holding vac on the door
locks. They lock fine but bleed off at various rates. Sometimes they
won't all lock, but can be pushed down and will hold for awhile. Anyone
out there still have a car like ours? I study the diagrams and seem to
get more confused. Think we need a mighty-vac from the sound of things,
also? Is it best to just change to new check valves or is there a way to
test and see if they are good. They may even be installed backwards for
all we know
Guess it will be spring someday and then we will be worried about the AC
that also doesn't work. And even though it hasn't started for 10 days
cause its too cold, we Love our car! Still not sure if that
block heater is there, but we are going to check it out soon. We have a
great old 72 ford bronco that gets us where we want to go in this weather!

WD-40'd it to get the key in tonight; however, I can't tell if
it's grabby because the key is old or because the pins don't
move properly. Do I replace the tumbler or the key? Or both?

Is the key brass or stainless steel? _Usually_, if it has a
black plastic head it's stainless, but I happen to have one
car with a set of very Merecedes looking keys with a bright
nickle finish on the side of the key and a black plastic head
that are actually brass.

The stainless steel key is definitely preferred. If there is
any water in the tumbler, and the air tempurature is below 0 C
(32 F) it won't function well. WD40 can help that situation.
The key slot should have a little door that swings closed when
the key is removed to key junk out. If that's missing, water
and other stuff can get in and muck up the action.

A new tumbler setup to use a matching key is about $100, so
it's worth being sure it really needs that.

 2) Brake master cylinder: just RR and then brake fluid
flush? I have a pressure flusher thing from my Volvo days, I
assume that will work with a proper cap?

Yup.
Yup.

The tank does not come with the new master cylinder. The
rubber grommet seals between the tank and master cylider do.
Well, they did on the one I just installed, anyway.

The rubber caps for the top of the caliper bleed screws are
often missing or old crumbly.
About $2 each, part number 000-421-08-87

 7) Car crunches (metal-on-rotating-metal) in rear when turning
'sharply', and it is slowly getting worse. I speculate the
driveshaft is hitting something when I turn, perhaps due to bad
transmission/motor mounts. I know I need to do shocks, and
probably rear springs too. Anything else?

Axle shafts? I'm not coming up with any good explanations for
why you get such a noise only when turning. The only noise
aft that changes with turning I have experienced is from
half-shafts - but that doesn't match your description very well.

 8) Alignment: tire shop says I need one, but I gather it's
difficult aligning MBs; how do I find out if an alignment shop
is any good? The nearest dealer is awful for parts sales so I
swore them off, but I'll go there if there's no other choice.

I do it myself. I bought a caster/camber gauge years ago. I
use a laser level to do the toe-in. I've now done the process
three times. Each was successful - the last being the best,
fastest - of course.

I did a write-up on the toe-in process.

I'm in the city, so having a trailer, would mean I'd have to store it
somewhere.

Some of those small utility trailers fold up in the middle.
I saw some for sale around here that would easily store along
the wall of a typical garage, vertically inside, tongue and
tail in the air and sitting on the wheels. I think this was
at Fred Meyer, a local chain that has groceries, automotive,
furniture, garden, etc. Typical Harbor Freight kind of
product, and I think around $300 brand new at the time.
Just add plywood (for a deck). Not heavy duty at all, but
it's not for people who need it to work for a living.

Saw one of that ilk behind some Mercedes sedan at the
local Home Despot once. Highly attractive way to go,
'cept we've already got trucks, and now a car trailer.
But the small light trailer would handle 95% of everything
you'd probably want to do except haul a car!

Uhmmm.   The process of turning tie-rods until the toe-in is

like Ken Block drives minus several hundred HP). He was concerned that as it
aged it was still just a car made by some English blokes with dubious
standards. He intends to keep the Subaru forever.

I don't really NEED a mini-van, but it seems several of my friends feel I
need one.  My mother advised me in a couple of years, when all the house
projects are finished, to dump the van and get a Mini Cooper S.  She's a
pretty cool Mum! :-)

Actually

My 190D has a trailer hitch and I was thinking of using it to haul the
snowmobile trailer. There are times when I want to ride after work and running
to my wife's office to get the pickup is a pain in the butt. The snowmobile
weighs ~600# so I'd figure around 900# total weight with the trailer, maybe
round up to 1000#. The trailhead is about 3 miles away (too far to take the
sled on the side of the road) so its not like its a long highway drive.

The only thing standing in the way right now is that the car isn't wired for
lights, does anybody know of a source for the wiring kit? Autozone was
flummoxed. My Ranger came wired for them but on the Dakota I bought a little
kit that plugged inline with the taillights.

I friend was looking at some.  I've never really looking into it to be
honest.  Before the mini-van, when I needed to bring something larger home
from HomeDept, I just rented one of their vans by the hour.  I do know, one
of the questions they always ask here, when applying for insurance, is
whether you are going to us your vehicle to tow anything.  Trailers also
need to be plated here, but I'm sure that applies most places.

I'm in the city, so having a trailer, would mean I'd have to store it
somewhere.  I think once I get the bulk of the things finished around the
house, I'll probably go back to renting for the occasional time I'll need to
bring something larger home.

On a bit of a side note, while we all see Mercedes pulling trailers in
Europe on a regular basis, I was told here, that any towing would void the
warranty.  My car is wy out of warranty, but it might effect your car as
it's probably still covered.  Not that I'm suggesting you have any plans to
turn your Benz into a trailer tug. hee hee

With the last car I wired, I got three inline fuse holders and a four prong
connector. Soldered the wires for the fuse holders into the taillight and
stop/turn wires. Then I soldered the connector to the fuse holders and to a
ground wire. My car wiring was too short to make it out of the hatch, but that
was OK, when I rewired the trailer I left about 4' of wire running past the
hitch, and I'd open the hatch and make my trailer connection out of the weather.

I had one major advantage over you, the car had integrated stop/tail lights,
just like the trailer. I suppose you'd need diodes to isolate the turn signals
from the stop lights so they didn't backfeed the car lights.

I'm pretty sure the W201 is rated for 500kg or 750kg without trailer brakes.
MBUSA, of course, rates all cars at 0kg for towing.

When the Ranger is used up I'm considering something in a small SUV instead of
another pickup, unless Mahindra comes through with a 30mpg diesel.

I'd like better fuel economy than the Ranger is capable of but still
maintaining the Ranger's offroad chops. This rules out things like Subarus,
don't even suggest them. Unfortunately it also rules out most of the
softroaders like the Escape (a joke offroad), the new Explorer (which is
HUGE) and a bunch of others. So I dunno...

Interestingly (to further confuse the issue) the '10 Ford F150 gets better (EPA
estimate anyway) mileage than my '03 Ranger and the new Tacoma is better than
that...

A coleman  VersaTrailer utility trailer is hard to beat.

Like this one:
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/rvs/2134782553.html

Light, easy to pull, the top is removable.   the front and back
tailgates fold down for long stuff.  It tips for dumping
dirt/rocks.  Tongue folds.  It can be  tipped up and stored against a
garage wall.

If anyone buys one, I would like to find a good used top for mine.

[MBZ] OT Windows on Mac

2011-01-06 Thread Rich Thomas
I don't think there is a mac list on Okiebenz so I will annoy y'all with
this.

Task is to put some flavor of Windows on an iMac 3.2GHz Intel Core 13
4GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 Mac OSX 10.6.5

I have lots of stuff on my old XP box so I would like to import/install
some of these apps on the Macwindows as they are only windows (and some
XP) apps.

Questions:

What flavor of windows thingie should I get? Looks like there is Boot
Camp for XP and some other stuff, but that is either/or. VMWare or
Parallels will run a window with windows (!!), so that seems like a
better choice.

What flavor of Windows? I want to keep my XP box running, so I will
need to get a new WinXP (and which version?, and how do I know they
aren't some chinee ripoffs?) or Win7 -- it appears that Win7 has some
sort of XP emulator so old XP apps can run on it?

Help me decide!

I'm sold on VMWare over Parallels or VirtualBox for one essential
feature that the former has and the others don't: automatic key
remapping so that when you switch into Windows the Alt key is where a

Not sure what it will do or is intended to do. I believe I got it from
this list some time back but all I have is about 4 or 5 pages of flat
drawings with dimensions noted. It looks to me like there may be 2
different anvils but I did not spend much time looking at it. Most of my

Will see if I can scan it this evening and send it along tomorrow.

pictures of the regulation part. The frame could be assembled and bolted
together (using adequate number and size of bolts to handle the stresses)

It's hard to beat a small utility trailer for occasional hauling
duty. Less than $1000 _including_ a hitch on the tow car, low
tax, hitch it only when you need it, and even the little ones
have 1000 lb (500 kg) load capacity making it comparable to a
half-ton pickup.

Oh, and the deck is lower so loading/unloading is easier.

I think I just convinced myself!! I should go buy one! A
companion for the big one I have already.

A coleman VersaTrailer utility trailer is hard to beat.

Like this one:
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/rvs/2134782553.html

Light, easy to pull, the top is removable. the front and back
tailgates fold down for long stuff. It tips for dumping
dirt/rocks. Tongue folds. It can be tipped up and stored against a
garage wall.

If anyone buys one, I would like to find a good used top for mine.

Re: [MBZ] 1980 300 SD vac lines again!

2011-01-06 Thread rogerhga
If you'll call me, I'll check the lines with you over the phone. I just went
through this with my Indie. Yes, instead of spending hours tracing down lines
with a Mity-vac, I let my Indie do it since he's trained on what to look for,
has the manuals, and I'm not. He found a leak in the right rear door lock which
was bleeding off vacuum...fixed that. Then the cruise control was leaking
vacuum...it don't work and I don't want to use it...so he plugged that. Then we
found a leak in the line from the IP to the vacuum modulator on the tranny. I
almost never found the part number for the plastic cap (dealer and everyone on
line wanted to sell me the whole modulator valve for 70-90.00 instead of 14.00
for the plastic cap). Fixed it and all is well.
As to the Hard Wired setup, unless it works differently than what I've read, it
won't fix your blower problem. The 80 300SD with the servo has a vacuum pod
under the dash which controls the blower, except on defrost. Defrost over rides
because the windshield clearing is a driveability / safety issue. Hence, if
this pod is bad or any lines that can affect it (like my door lock was doing),
you won't get blower except for the defrost. I actually replaced my blower
motor, only to find that although it seemed like the problem, it was really a
vacuum problem from this control pod under the dash.
Anyway, unless you want to buy a Mity-vac, buy the manuals, and spend your
spare time trying to figure which line you are really tracing for vacuum, I'd
recommend a good Indie. It's cheaper and quicker in the long run. At least that
has been my personal experience with my two old 617s...others may have had
different outcomes...over which I have had no control. I like DIY also, but I
realize my limitations and I realize who is best at what tasks (me or my Indie)
and act accordingly.

Re: [MBZ] 1980 300 SD vac lines again!

2011-01-06 Thread Curt Raymond
Its important to remember that the vacuum lines on a 1980 are 30+ years old now
and ARE going to fail. The plastic has hardened and vibration will make them
break. Fixing vacuum issues isn't a Today I work on it and it'll be good
forever its going to be I need to work on this every year from now until
forever unless you replaced them all now...

A mityvac and the vacuum diagram is an investment into your future. Vacuum
troubleshooting isn't hard, you follow pull the block, pump it down (or try to
anyway) and follow the line to the offender.

For example:
Last fall I drove myself to the airport in my '78 240D, when I got there the
car wouldn't shut off. Manual transmissions are handy, step on the brake, pop
the clutch, problem solved. When I got back the problem hadn't magically fixed
itself but I did notice it wasn't an issue if the doors were unlocked. Hmm,
problem therefore MUST be in the door circuit, specifically the UNLOCK side of
the door circuit.
Theres a block of vacuum hoses under the driver's feet so I pull back the
carpet, start unplugging things and pumping down the mity vac and see what
happens. Some lock or unlock doors on the other side of the car (if one pulls
down but doesn't do anything release vacuum, change the lock state of the doors
(unlock or relock) and see what try again) and one unlocks the rear driver's
door but one doesn't seem to do anything and doesn't hold vacuum... Start
following that one, it goes under the driver's seat and I find a break where it
comes out. Find another in the door. Now the rear passenger's door unlocks and
relocks.

Start the car and verify function with engine vacuum, thats good AND the car
shuts off. Problem solved. Also replaced a 4 way adapter which makes the doors
unlock and relock faster and hold vacuum longer.
Theres more to be gained on this car (leaky old fittings) but I ran out of time
that day and its cold now so I'll work on it more in the spring.

and the group was going to a dealership in major markets and letting
the peons drive one for a minute or two. They never really said it
was a gasser or when it was for sale. They also never mentioned the
word Diesel in any way.

Me too if it ever actually arrives. Thats been in the works for years.

Frod is bringing out a v6 twin turbo F150 that is supposed to get 35
mpg. That gets my attention

When the Ranger is used up I'm considering something in a small SUV
instead of another pickup, unless Mahindra comes through with a
30mpg diesel.

I'd like better fuel economy than the Ranger is capable of but still
maintaining the Ranger's offroad chops. This rules out things like
Subarus, don't even suggest them. Unfortunately it also rules out
most of the softroaders like the Escape (a joke offroad), the new
Explorer (which is HUGE) and a bunch of others. So I dunno...

Interestingly (to further confuse the issue) the '10 Ford F150 gets
better (EPA estimate anyway) mileage than my '03 Ranger and the new
Tacoma is better than that...

It's hard to beat a small utility trailer for occasional hauling

have 1000 lb (500 kg) load capacity making it comparable to a

Oh, and the deck is lower so loading/unloading is easier.

Re: [MBZ] Timing Chain Crimping Tool

2011-01-06 Thread Greg Fiorentino
I would be interested in a copy of the plans. I agree that it would be a
nice project for a novice machinist.

I know I've seen pictures of the tool, I'll see if I can locate them.

As to the anvil: Some have described the process as peening, and that could
be done. IIRC the regulation tool does not actually peen, but rather stakes
the end of the pin by pushing a sharp wedge into the center. The finished
pin has a cross pattern pressed into it (most likely by moving a wedge 90
degrees and pressing again). This forces the edges out and completes the
link. Interchangeable anvils could be made to a close sliding fit in a hole
in one side of the frame, fashioned from drill rod and ground or milled to a
wedge on the business end. The end of the screw could also have a removable
piece on the end with a recess to receive the end of the pin and not slip.

BTW, if the frame were to be made as described below, it would be best to
machine the two ends while held together to better line up the anvil with
the clamp screw.

basic frame, and handle seem simple enough. The threaded rod that one
uses to tighten it is also fairly simple. The parts that have me a bit

only
parts that should require hardened and tempered tool steel would be the
peening tool and the anvil. The rest could be mild steel, even
free-machining leaded steel. The dimensions could be guesstimated from
pictures of the regulation part. The frame could be assembled and bolted
together (using adequate number and size of bolts to handle the stresses)
from rectangular stock to minimize milling. Drill and tap for a fairly
fine
thread to get some mechanical advantage. Accurately locate the anvil from
the drilled hole. Make the anvil and peening tool from drill rod, then
heat

[MBZ] OT Watch question

2011-01-06 Thread Max Dillon
Watch Experts,

I'm considering the purchase of a new watch - I need to get something with a
leather band as my Seiko with metal band has begun to irritate the skin on
my wrist.

Yesterday I looked at a Tissot priced at $550, which is pretty steep for my
budget, but a really nice watch. Black face with black leather band,
automatic movement, smooth sweep second hand, date (week day and day of
month). The sales lady says it is part of their vintage collection, and the
style is rather 50's/60's (thus the name). Face has standard numbers - not
Roman. Sapphire crystal, water proof to 100 meters.

Anyone have an opinion of Tissot watches? $550 sound like a fair price? I
found a similar watch but with Roman numerals on Ebay for $750, but I also
saw other Tissot automatic watches for $100.

That's about it. In 1992 the 140 came with at least V-rated tires and

So, the next year they used H-rated tires (longer life, cheaper and
 not
covered by MB warranty) and governed the cars to 130mph which is why
 we
 have
H-rated tires and 130mph governors today. Except on certain models. My
 C300

 accelerating.

The * key isn't related to presets... its a function key that, among other
things, allows you to do a direct entry of the frequency as you already
discovered.

To save a preset, tune to the desired station by any method (seek, direct
entry, etc) then press and hold the preset you'd like to save the station
too. Keep holding. It will change to it's old saved station, then after a
few seconds, to the new preset you have saved.

Re: [MBZ] Mini

2011-01-06 Thread E M
Salesgirl at one of our local BMW shops drivers a Cooper S. Not really much
to compare between the old original minis, and what is offered today. I've
been in a number of old ones, and while they are great fun, you could never
build a car like that today. Not if you plan on selling it in any developed
nation anyway.

The new ones seem as though they're bolted together quite well. If there is
a drawback, they are a small market, and I think most parts are specific to
mini, so parts availability are pretty much limited to the dealer, when
things start to fail in time. I haven't heard of any real issues with the
new ones.

I've never really worried about the cost of fuel, as I don't log that many
miles to be honest. But with traffic what it is in the city, driving and
parking is becoming a real pain. The mini and W212 are on my short list
when it becomes time to replace the mini van in 2-3 years.

found a similar watch but with Roman numerals on Ebay for $750, but I also
saw other Tissot automatic watches for $100.

free-machining leaded steel. The dimensions could be guesstimated from
pictures of the regulation part. The frame could be assembled and bolted
together (using adequate number and size of bolts to handle the
stresses)
from rectangular stock to minimize milling. Drill and tap for a fairly
 fine
thread to get some mechanical advantage. Accurately locate the anvil
from
the drilled hole. Make the anvil and peening tool from drill rod, then
 heat

It's hard to beat a small utility trailer for occasional hauling

have 1000 lb (500 kg) load capacity making it comparable to a

Re: [MBZ] cheap hauling

2011-01-06 Thread Max Dillon
I bought the MB European wiring harness for my wagon, was a bit pricey, and
it requires extra lights on the trailer. I guess in Europe and probably
lots of other parts of the world the brake light and turn signal light
require different filaments. I simply added a second set of lights and ran
more wires to light them, but this is impractical if I want to tow someone
else's trailer or someone else tow's my boat. I need to make an adapter so
that I can at least have brake lights if I tow a different trailer, or maybe
get some magnetic base towing lights from HF.

Actually

My 190D has a trailer hitch and I was thinking of using it to haul the
snowmobile trailer. There are times when I want to ride after work and
running to my wife's office to get the pickup is a pain in the butt. The
snowmobile weighs ~600# so I'd figure around 900# total weight with the
trailer, maybe round up to 1000#. The trailhead is about 3 miles away (too
far to take the sled on the side of the road) so its not like its a long
highway drive.

Not that I'm suggesting you have any plans to
turn your Benz into a trailer tug. hee hee

    1984 Mercedes-Benz 230 E (W123) RARE 5-SPEED

Date: 2011-01-06, 2:21PM

Runs and drives, needs work. There is rust. Excellent MPG, power sunroof
works, power windows, velour interior. Blue in color over blue/gray
interior. Daily driver must sell due to move. If you are a true Mercedes
enthusiast, you will understand how rare this transmission is- take it
out and mount it on your 300D. Make me an offer, no low ballers (I would
rather take it with me if I have to). Please call 951 440 4935 and ask
for Anthony. Thanks!

Good suggestion, and I've considered it, but current watch style/design does
not lend itself to a leather band and I can wear this one for a few days
before it becomes uncomfortable, sometimes longer.

Why don't you just buy a leather band for the one you have? Maybe like
$10 and yer good ta go... Or better yet, make one from MBTex and it

If you want an old style automatic that you won't see on anybody else's
wrist,
take a look at Perpetual:
http://www.perpetual-watch.com/

Sea-Gull has quite a selection, and the USA distributor sells them cheaper
than
you'll find in China.
http://usseagull.com/EnProduct.asp

Orient USA (Japanese watch company, owned by Seiko now) usually has 49% off
coupons. I think ST149 is the current code.
http://www.orientwatchusa.com/

I'm sure there are some deals around half off list or better on Tissot.
The affordables forum on watchuseek might help you find them.

I've had 2 Citizen Eco Drives over the last decade. I wish they could
build cars like these watches. Other than having to change the date
occasionally, you set it and ferget it. I once left one in a drawer for
over a week, kept perfect time. I am pretty hard on watches too.

DON'T get the HF magnetic tow lights.

The ones from uhaul are I think $30, and they stick like bear claws
in a tree. Better electric cable etc. Pretty much the same as used
by the tow trucks.

I bought the HF lights, and they fell off before I left the HF

Tissot is a great vintage name as far as I know.
I have a Mathey Tissot Type 12 aircraft clock sitting in front of me.
I like old style mechanical watches - the kind you need to wind every
day, not the automatic mechanical watches - I can waste 30 seconds
each day winding a watch, it is not that difficult.
As someone mentioned, most brand names of the past are all under the
umbrella of Swatch - which is not a bad thing, but... one large
company, all the same product, different names. I find that type of
stuff so... oh, well.
So, if I was looking for a watch, me personally, I would hunt for a
vintage watch of Tissot name - something that can be repaired, but has
good design and function. I have a few watches and only one has a
battery in it - I just am not impressed with electricity... yet.
