FAT16 final version...

1999-06-28 Thread Anonymous

  Manoel "Fudeba" Pazos,

I have uploaded final version of FAT16 program to my homepage, but
remember that it is only for MegaSCSI.

Why 'final version'? I downloaded this version but not tested yet (and
what my "home-works" I'll not test in this next week).

Another thing. Who is the 'english' (spanish, portuguese, freench or
latin) version of FAT16.DOC?? I know how to use the program but I
don't know what is this new switches "/P" (partition?) and "/B".

This file may be curious informations but I can't read Kanjis... I'm
fudeba not a japanese translator, Jim! :)

There you will find a new version of EVA player for FAT16 that can
play EVAs bigger than 32Mb. A 200Mb EVA file was tested on MO and
 worked right.

Good! But How I can create (store, write) my very very large EVA
files? I can write in partitions or the FAT16 still "read-only"?

Ah! Someone answer why the FAT driver is MegaSCSI only, not? It's a
PATCH and the program patches sirectly the MegaSCSI BIOS saved in
SRAM. You can patch, turn off computer, restart and the MSX still
reading FAT16 formated disks. Nice, not?

Yes, and Mission-X was once released on a Clubguide Picturedisk (#6 or #9 or

erm I believe so, we had some contacts with genic at that time, but I'm not

Who wrote The Lost Crown? Maybe we can find/contact him.

hmms I have that MCCM, but can't reach it until next week, so maybe someone
can look it up for us... we're looking for the (quite old) MCM that details
the winners of the contest. The prizes were a lot of konamis, Emiel got
quite a package I recall. I believe the cover has a [Dutch, but then, the

Hi, Peter:

  good. Well, now I have a MoonSound (8-DDD ) . Where can I download
a MIDI player for this amazing soundcard?
PB Sorry, but for the MoonSound exist not a good MIDI player.
PB It is to difficult to developpe a MIDI-player for it. Yahmaha give
us
PB not the necessary informations, verry bad.

I don't understand that. If has been possible to make Moonblaster ...
What's
the matter? We have the required information to play and create music
with
the OPL4. I think the source (Moonblaster, MIDI, others) should not be
important.

The creator of Moonblaster for Moonsound used a PC with an
OPL-4 in it to get the patch information from it. It took him very
much time. Unfortunatly, there seem to be some errors in the
table. Without the documentation from Yamaha about the
contents of the ROM it is VERY hard to find these errors.
Some samples in the ROM are used for different instruments
with different frequency constants.

There are some drivers on a PC written by Yamaha that are
using the patch table in a correct way, but it I am not capable
to reverse engineer them. If someone is able to do it, please
go on!

By the way, I have started to make a new midi player for the
moonsound that uses the midi driver I have made a long time
ago for the Moonsound. (can take a long time to finish, I have
other things to do) (I has the same patch table as Moonblaster
uses, with the same problems, especially withdual tone patches)

RE: FAT16 final version and new EVA player.

1999-06-28 Thread Anonymous

Great. Could you make it open-source???

Due to my lack of time I 'leave' FAT16 proyect some month ago, so Okei
was who finish it.
I have source code of former versions, but the latest one :(
I will ask her for that code. But it is difficult to understand that
code because it uses and patchs a lot of undocumented MSX DOS 2 kernel
rutines.

Also, do you really use MegaSCSI-specific calls or did you only test it on
MegaSCSI?

It only works on MegaSCSI because it uses specific calls and hardware
tricks.

Re: web browser for msx

1999-06-26 Thread Anonymous

Hi!

I have some questions for Ricardo:

1. Why not make the MSX2 browser free software?
Open source would be ideal, so people could add HTZ viewing to their own
productions (for example, a disk magazine, or a manual for a game).

2. Will you release the HTZ specification?
It would allow other people to write a WISE server or make an HTZ viewer.

I fear keeping FudeBrowser "closed" to the outside world will limit it's
possiblities. Just like MIF, technically advanced but few people use it.

Maarten

Re: New MSX...what do you think?

At 11:42 AM 6/25/99 +0200, you wrote:

Yes, everybody has a PC nowadays, but I see movements in the business. I
think the time is here to introduce other systems (hard- and
software)..Linux is more popular then ever, BEOS version 4 is
released. These are all examples of the fact that more and more people
don't like PC/Microsoft anymore.

First, you must separate PC from Microsoft.

BeOS runs on x86 and Power PC. Linux runs on many systems, but most people
use x86. Intel even actively supports Linux development. So, it's not right
to assume all PCs run Windows.

The other way around, Windows CE is in a lot of new equipment (like the
Dreamcast), so Microsoft is not limited to PCs anymore.

Second, I fail to see why MSX would be a good base for a new computer
system. Other than games, I don't think I know any program that MSX offers
and is better than what Linux offers.

Besides, even if a company wanted MSX compatibility, they could better do
it in software than in hardware. Some may argue that the current MSX
emulators are not perfect yet. But remember that the typical MSX emulator
is written by a single person in his spare time. A team of full-time
programmers could make a near-perfect MSX emulator in a matter of months.

I think MSX only has a chance in a field where its limitations may be
benefits: low-cost, low-power, small. A portable game computer, like the
GameBoy. You could download games (DSK or ROM format) from the net, into a
flash ROM. There are plently of games available right now, ASCII only has
to buy the rights.

Remember, the only reason (from a commercial standpoint) for making a
device MSX compatible is to run existing software. Writing new software is
easier on a 32-bit RISC processor. And those do fit into VLSI nowadays...
And as I already said, existing software means games. Ofcourse, once the
device is made, it can run other software too (email client, organiser).
But those are not a reasons to choose MSX in the first place.

Maarten

With FudeBrowser, the idea remains the same. You would still
connect to a web server in a pc, only this time the web server is a
dedicated one.

If someone really wants to browse using just an MSX, they could make a WISE
server for MSX, right? And since the TCP/IP that is under development
allows multitasking, the MSX WISE and FudeBrowser could run on the same
machine.

"But, what if my local ISP does not agree to run wise?"
Don't worry. If WISE is running in just one server on the world,
it would be enough. You would connect to your isp, yout isp would connect
to the wise server and you would download the .htz stream without even
know from where it's coming.

So the WISE server acts as a kind of proxy server?

Anyway, to make it practical, you'd need something like a WISE server per
country, or at least continent.

I think a WISE server can most easily be implemented in Java:
- portable
- sending streams over TCP/IP is easy
- GIF and JPEG decoding are already present in most Java environments

 RG
RG Is there a more simple solution?

Yes, there is. I suggest you to use LOADROM.COM with the original .ROM files of
the games. You can download .ROM files from Funet, Komkon, etc. LOADROM
overwrites the 'AB' strings before running the game in order to avoid
auto-reload and hanging some computers up.

Maybe you are right about Sega, but we need to show what we can do with

All samples in the ROM are all 12 BIT... That's not the problem. What
yamaha didn't provide is the patch tables... The sample information (bit's
per sample, envelop data, loop, start and end address) is stored in the ROM
itself.

Maybe you should try again??? I don't see why they won't give docs on this

New MSX...what do you think?

1999-06-25 Thread Anonymous

Hi

I was wondering how all of you think about this new MSX story. I read mixed
responses to the news.

I would like to know what market they would aim at IF a new MSX will come.
What kind of market is left in this world where almost everybody has a PC
that has al lot of software available...because that's where it comes to in
terms of success, software must be available.
On the other hand, there's also a market for simple home applications, to be
used by people who just want to play games, browse some web or type a letter
or two. PC's are way too complicated for these people.

In my opinion it would be really cool to have a MSX3 that combines
playstation like functionality, webtv and full MSX(2+,TR) compatibility.

Add some software that can create an 'integrated AV system', like remote
controlling other AV devices, and databases for CD's, videos etc. that you
can browse on your TV with the remote and you're set.

Tell me what you think.

I know. I didn't mean that we should only show Dutch stuff, but I wanted to
say that at least THIS Dutch stuff should be shown! Get it? I let other people
do proposals for Spanish and other software...

(Indeed, Sonyc might be a good idea or things like No Name, Akin (Yo Cas!) and
what about Core Dump, if it will ever be finished? (YO CAS!! ;-) Or that XTAZY
partly-finished game? (Quite impressive Moonsound GFX9000 stuff!) Or the
demo of The Incredible Micro Mirror Men? (Again NOP!)

why don't show stuff from beginners so they can see that there are still new
 poeple on the msx scene

Would that impress Mr. Nishi?

Kuniji, don't forget to send us mail about these kind of things! :-)

but as much as i would like it that there will be a new MSX i kind of doubt
it just like all the other project's.
sorry but thats how i see it.
i have to see it first before i believe it.

I agree. But if Nishi is involved it gives (at least me) a lot more confidence

Yes, everybody has a PC nowadays, but I see movements in the business. I
think the time is here to introduce other systems (hard- and
software)..Linux is more popular then ever, BEOS version 4 is
released. These are all examples of the fact that more and more people
don't like PC/Microsoft anymore.Maybe ASCII feels the same and wants to
build a new system which is more easy to understand and to use. A machine on
which you can simply play a game, do some browsing and e-mailing and typing
a letter..The PC is very hard to keep up with, every week a new driver for
that and that card is being released, it's too difficult for the public to
keep their computer modern

On the other hand, there's also a market for simple home applications, to
be
used by people who just want to play games, browse some web or type a
letter
or two. PC's are way too complicated for these people.

*grin*...Yeah, that's what I mean*I am a dombo, I should read the whole
message first...*

In my opinion it would be really cool to have a MSX3 that combines

I think ASCII isn't exactly planning to continue MSX-technologyThey just
stand open for the system and the way it works/workedMaybe they can get
some inspiration from itThat would be more likely then ASCII wanting
to release MSX3...

Add some software that can create an 'integrated AV system', like remote

Most people seems to miss that FudeBrowser does not require a PC.
Suppose you have an msx-browser that reads directly from the .html files.
You would still have to connect in a web server. Most likely this web
server would be a PC.

With FudeBrowser, the idea remains the same. You would still
connect to a web server in a pc, only this time the web server is a
dedicated one.

"But, what if my local ISP does not agree to run wise?"
Don't worry. If WISE is running in just one server on the world,
it would be enough. You would connect to your isp, yout isp would connect
to the wise server and you would download the .htz stream without even
know from where it's coming.

What about a HW to de/compress JPG images ? It's not so difficult to do for

1. Price (HW has costs)
2. Complexity (it's not an easy HW)
3. Availability (ordering, sending, paying, etc, etc)
4. The HTML parsing and all will be still heavy for Z80 3.5MHz

WISE solution is the best cost/benefit solution.
Think about it.

Try to make it and you'll hit the second problem described in the
manual of FudeBrowser: MSX modems are too slow. WISE has an average
compression rate of 65% for both images and text; this means an .html file
of 16 kb can be reduced to 10 kb, before the sending. If you make the html
parsing on the msx, then you must read the original (and larger) stream...

Oh yes, with TR that's completely possible, but the author's idea is to

If you think about the Internet network structure, you will see that your
computer doesn't work alone while running a web-browser. So, with a
special web server, we can transfer some computational load from the
clients (MSX in our case) to the server, allowing us to have full
graphical browsing.

The point useing Lynx is that you can not use but it with your MSX
 ( via Unix-shell).

With TR, perhaps we can use MSX as a X terminal!

RS232

1999-06-25 Thread Anonymous

Hi, folks.

Here is a stupid question about RS232...
I connected my TR to my PC using RS232. I made a program in PC to
read any byte from RS232 port. It works with another PC sending data via
RS232.
I also made a program in MSX for sending data through RS232. I
first call RS232 ROM INIT routine. After, I simply call RS232 ROM SENDBYTE
routine. INIT returns ok. But SENDBYTE hangs MSX. I think I'm doing
everything right. Maybe I need to open a channel in RS232 for sending
bytes? But SENDBYTE routine doesn't asks for channel ID [maybe because my
RS232 is NOT multichannel?]... Ah, and GETBYTE also hangs MSX... :/
Anyone knows what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,

  Adriano,

WISE solution is the best cost/benefit solution. Think about it.

Yes, but how many WISE servers will be exist in world? Why I can be
forced to use a special service to "browsing" in webpages with my MSX?
Why we can have a small, simple, and no more complex WWW client to MSX
like Lynx? Remember that you access from a fantastic backbone the load
all stupid pictures not is a problem, my Netscape only runs with
"Autoload pictures" disabled, I'm not crazy!

According to the data book, the bit in S#0 is only for the vertical blank
interrupt. So it shouldn't be necessary to read it on line interrupts.

One thing that struck me about the program is that you only set the
palette
index once. I'm not sure it wraps around at 16. If it doesn't, it would
 cause your program to fail.

It wraps around. And I relocated that part, the problem persists.
Besides, if this was the problem then it would not result in what I have now
but in a proper screensplitted screen, just with the wrong colors.

Actually, in which way does your program fail? Crash, wrong display, ...?

Maybe you should run it??? :)
Then you can see it...
It runs, but it gives a wrong display, the screen flickers like crazy.

Shouldn't you be writing the palette data to port #9A instead of #99?

 Hello guys.

I just finished the first version of my Web Browser for MSX,
called "FudeBrowser". You can download it from my MSX page:

 http://www.lsi.usp.br/~ricardo/msx.htm

Nice program...

But why shouldn't the MSX be able to read .HTM-files??? The tags are very
easy to translate, the only problem could be the images...

Re: RE:IDECDEX, IDE and CD-ROM

1999-06-24 Thread Anonymous

Hi all,

If I want to obtain the list of the "MSX" cd by Hnostar
is necessary do the RESET of the computer.

RESET computer - DIR and list is correct:
 DEMOS
 GAMES
 GFX900
 GRAPHICS
 HNOSTAR
 etc...

  Why this?
Is an error in the IDECDEX?

it seems that your CDROM does not report to IDECDEX driver that the medium
was replaced. Perhaps something goes wrong with communication between msx
and cdrom (atapi protocol).

Do you experience other problems with your CDROM? (readerrors, etc...)

is it an old cdrom? (=slow)

Greetz,
jon

btw in stead of resetting, try to open your CDROM and close it again; this
should generate a 'medium changed' condition if your cdrom is ok. IDECDEX
will notice this and will refresh the cached directorystructure.

ps: bios 1.94 is on its way (enhanced ATAPI driver), perhaps this will
also fix your cd communication problem

   Why this?
Is an error in the IDECDEX?

I encounter the same problem...When I insert an other cdrom, the DIR of the
old disc is being displayed...I use MM2.05When I switch to another drive
and then switch back to the cdromdrive, the problem is still there...
However, when I try to select a DIR on the cd which in fact isn't there, coz
it's another disc, MM2.05 gives an error, I switch to another drive, switch
back and the correct DIR is being displayed!! So you don't NEED to reset the
computerJust do as I do.

it seems that your CDROM does not report to IDECDEX driver that the medium
was replaced. Perhaps something goes wrong with communication between msx
 and cdrom (atapi protocol).

I don't know, but as I have written above, I have just the same problem

Do you experience other problems with your CDROM? (readerrors, etc...)

No, not at all, everything works fantastic!!

is it an old cdrom? (=slow)

Erhm, no, 40speed *overdreven, I know :)*, just bought it..*grin*

IF this is true.. and only IF.. because i can't see why ASCII want to
put money in developing a new MSX machine.. ( tell me )
Then : we must supply those guys with THE BEST stuff ever made
for GFX9000 and MoonSound .. so that they can somehow convince
ASCII that they do have a 'solid' sales area for their new MSX
system.

Unfortunately i don't have written any programz yet for the GFX9000 and
MoonSound but i'm sure others are willing to supply their stuff !!

I personally would like a new MSX system but i don't know about
others.. the system must have a LOT of good features otherwise it
is already doomed..

Www! This is really BIG news!

My proposal is to show (mainly Dutch stuff):

why mainly dutch? lots of great stuff is comming from spain!

- all available GFX9000 software, including those nice demo-like thingies
by
Mark Zellenrath (former Fony and Mayhem)
- Nice Turbo R software, like Zone Terra
- St. Sunrise software (The Lost World, Pumpkin Adventure 3, and maybe
more)
- St. Sunrise hardware! (ofcourse GFX9000, Moonsound, Sunrise IDE, Sunrise
RS232)

- Impressive MSX2-demo's like NOP's Unknown Reality (256kB/MSX Audio),
Almost
Real (disk A...), Calculus and others (Techno Crew/TeddyWarez/...???)
- Also some nice demo's from Switzerland! Like that Raytracing demo.
- Hardware like JoyNet! I hope there will be some software for it soon!

This would really impress Nishi! Other proposals welcome ofcourse!

why don't show stuff from beginners so they can see that there are still new
poeple on the msx scene

Kuniji, don't forget to send us mail about these kind of things! :-)

but as much as i would like it that there will be a new MSX i kind of doubt
it just like all the other project's.
sorry but thats how i see it.
i have to see it first before i believe it.

It depends on the kind of graphics. In the most part of the cases, the
pictures will be great! (unbelievable, but that's the truth). There are
some samples of htz files in the FudeBrowser package, so I strongly
recommend that you see it.

FudeBrowser is extremely fast, but htz files must be generated from html
files using WISE (Web Intelligent SErver). The heavy part of the
conversion is made by WISE, so the execution of FUDEBROW.COM will always
be fast.

What is WISE? (Or is that a stoopid question?)

Explained above, but in the package there is a good self-explainable
manual (what's that? Manuel didn't read the manual??? :-) )

i forgot something... our game DOME can also be showed there... it does
nothing with v9990 or moonsound but it is impressive for MSX ... ( i thought
.. )

 Antal

Goeiedag allemaal,

Jon wrote:

Yes, exact!
Not report to IDECDEX drive that the cd-rom has been open
for change the cd.

Perhaps something goes wrong with communication
between msx and cdrom (atapi protocol).
Yes, perhaps...
I write DIR and the cd-rom reads (the motor is ON and also
the led of cd-rom to light up). Appears the list of the files.
I replace the cd, I write DIR still, and this time the cdrom
doesn't read!! (the motor is OFF and also the led of cd-rom is out).
THIS ISN'T GOOD!!

Do you experience other problems with your CDROM? (readerrors, etc...)
No! No problem, function well!
The COPY command only doesn't function,
(but we have spoken still of this).

is it an old cdrom? (=slow)
No. The cd-rom is recent he is a 40x speed.

btw in stead of resetting, try to open your CDROM and close it again; this
should generate a 'medium changed' condition if your cdrom is ok. IDECDEX
will notice this and will refresh the cached directorystructure.
No, don't function, like told already, this is not as.

ps: bios 1.94 is on its way (enhanced ATAPI driver), perhaps this will
also fix your cd communication problem
Ok, many thanks to you.

However, when I try to select a DIR on the cd which in fact isn't there, coz
it's another disc, MM2.05 gives an error, I switch to another drive, switch
back and the correct DIR is being displayed!! So you don't NEED to reset the
 computerJust do as I do.
This is truth but this is not correct do.
The problem must be resolved.

Re: Hi and infoquery

1999-06-23 Thread Anonymous

Hi,

Alone, that's more so, with two it's a lot easier to reacquire weapons.
But (well I haven't played much alone so you know better) even alone it
shouldn't be that hard. After all, when you have say 2 speeds + a laser
and/or one option, you can already survive with reasonable chances. At
least if your starting from a level's beginning. The end halves will be
more difficult to get started from...

Yes, and those were also the points that I had in mind...

Was the part before the Dark Zone so bad? The Dark Zone itself may be
especially if you've too many speeds (that's where I died when playing
alone).

If you die and you start over right before the Dark Zone, it's bad. There
aren't many energy capsules to be gained, so there is little chance that
you can regain enough weapons to play on to the end of the level. And
if you reach that point, it remains to be very difficult without any
weapons (nearly impossible).

Well not any emulator. FMSX doesn't have save, neither any other I've
seen (one had it "under construction"...). Gotta keep looking.

I think the emulator of MCCM featured something like this (MSX4PC)...

Rieks

Hi,

Is Princess Maker a good game? Is an RPG?

Princess Maker is not really an RPG, although it contains some RPG
elements and a part of it exists of an RPG. It can be called a
childcare simulation game. You have to raise the daughter of the
king while he's solving some war problems. It was very popular in
Japan. I never played it, but I think I will some time.

Re: RAM disk vs floppy (was: Re[2]: IDE, CD-ROM and IDECDEX)

1999-06-23 Thread Anonymous

  {Troubles with floppy as H:]
Maybe the RAMdisk and floppy 'collide'?

  Well that's my guess too.
But why oh why does it auto-install the RAMDISK

  Good question ;-)

Ehm, the msxdos I use does not "automagically" create a ramdisk (at least
I
think it doesn't). I always have to put RAMDISK= in my autoexec.bat
(or
 type it at command-prompt).

No, I haven't put something like that in the AUTOEXEC.BAT
But I meant I think Dos2 already installed some driver or so which keeps the
H: drive RESERVED for the Ramdisk, causing problems when used with a real
drive.

Re: MIDI player for Moonsound

1999-06-23 Thread Anonymous

Well, there is, at least, one MIDI player for Moonsound. The reproduction
isn't very good, but it is the 0.xx version.
The autor is Joon-Sung Kim, and the program can be downloaded at
http://unity.kaist.ac.kr:8080/ .
Manuel, I think it is a good link to put in the MSX FAQ.

It was a MIDI-player for the MSX-Audio of origin which is adapted to use the
FM-part of the MoonSound. This doesn't sound very nice and it is much more
logical to use the waves in the ROM, which is MIDI-compatible. Also, the
timing of Jun-Sung Kim's player is very bad.

But Peter... what do you mean 'Yamaha doesn't want to give the info'???
Isn't there the Techincal Databook or whatever it's called? Everything the
MoonSound can do is in there...

(3rd time I try to sent this msg to the list - still havent seen anything :-/)

Hi all,

another attempt to resolve the Multisuperscreensplitwithpalette problem:

Shouldn't you be writing the palette data to port #9A instead of #99?
(MSX Tech. handbook says VDP port #2 (= VDP_Write+2) for the pallete data)

The Technical Databook have no informations about the ROM, some samples

Boot sector phases

What's the difference between executing a boot sector program at phase 1
(CY flag reset) and at phase 2 (CY flag set)?

I'd like to use only disk ROM functions (CALLing #F37D). Phase 2 prepares
MSX-DOS environment. It it necessary to pass phase 2 to use ROM functions?

Yes, is possible.
ESE-RAM 256KB - 64KB (msxdos2) = 192KB free space.

Instructions for to install MSXDOS2 in ESE-RAM cartridge:

1) You use a normal MSX (no Harddisk, no cd-rom, no MSXDOS2)

2) Use in drive A: the ESE-RAM disk and Copy from A: to B:
(A: is ESE-RAM disk and B: is a formatted disk)
   the files:
   MSXDOS.SYS
   COMMAND.COM
   KSAVER.COM
   MGINST.COM
   ESFORM.COM

3) OFF the computer. Insert MSXDOS2.2 cartridge in your computer.
Insert the B disk in the drive of the computer.

4) ON the computer and you write:
   KSAVER MSXDOS2.ROM + RETURN

5) OFF the computer, insert the ESE-RAM in the slot 1
   and ON the computer.

6) Write: MGINST MSXDOS2.ROM/D/S81 + RETURN
S81 is parameter for slot 1... other parameter:

   S80 for the slot 0 or 0.0
   S84 0.1
   S88 0.2
   S8C 0.3
   S81 1 or 1.0
   S85 1.1
   S89 1.2
   S8D 1.3
   S82 2 or 2.0
   S86 2.1
   S8A 2.2
   S8E 2.3
   S83 3 or 3.0
   S87 3.1
   S8B 3.2
   S8F 3.3

7) Reset the computer and write ESFORM + RETURN
   Now the RAM is active.

8) Copy in RAM the files MSXDOS2.SYS and COMMAND2.COM

9) END You have copied MSXDOS2 in ESE-RAM cartridge :-)))

Re: web browser for msx

I just finished the first version of my Web Browser for MSX,
called "FudeBrowser". You can download it from my MSX page:

 http://www.lsi.usp.br/~ricardo/msx.htm

Hi, Ricardo

I have downloaded it. It works fine on my TR, but I have some comments:
- How can I access to a link? Is possible on that version?
- The WISE program hangs on my PC (well, W95 informs that the program
has effectuated a not valid operation, bla bla bla...).
- WISE only accepts PCX graphics... but I think PCX is no accepted by
any PC browser. What must I do? Transform every graphic to PCX and
change de image tags of the HTML document to point to the PCX files?

Well, finally, congratulations. Fudebrowser is GREAT!!

Re: Diskdrive of 8245 broken... HELP!

1999-06-22 Thread Anonymous

Well, it could be that the heads are not pressed tight enough onto
the disk, thereby not transferring the magnetic info correctly. (Try
pressing play just a little bit on your walkman and you'll hear the effect:
 high frequencies get lost).

No, pushing the head downwards does not help. I mean pressing the head in the
direction of the bootsector.

This is hard to measure, but maybe if you have access to another
(broken) drive you can compare it.

Another thing is there may be 'speling' (what is the English
word...play?) in the horizontal movement of the heads, thereby not aligning
the tracks right every time (but maybe sometimes).

What can I do about it? The head is indeed a bit 'loose'..

More possibilities: excentric movement of the disk (check the rim
while it's spinning). Maybe the sector 0 detector is not always working. I

rim? It seems to be ok.

don't know how this works in this drive, but in mine it's a magnet on the
spindle motor passing a hall switch. If it's optical in the 8245, maybe it's
 dirty.

It doesn't look optical, i.e. I see no little light. It looks ok though.

So far my ideas...good luck and let me know if you find out more.

Ok, anyone else that might be able to help me? I feel it must be possible to
get this drive working again! (It almost works!)

Re: web browser for msx

Antoni,

I'm not Ricardo, but I think I can answer your questions... :)

  http://www.lsi.usp.br/~ricardo/msx.htm
 - How can I access to a link? Is possible on that version?

Not yet. It will be in step 2 of the project (see README.TXT).

 - The WISE program hangs on my PC (well, W95 informs that the program
has effectuated a not valid operation, bla bla bla...).

Try running in MSDOS6.22 or in a 'clean' W95 environment (that
'command-prompt only safe mode' of W95 startup menu).

 - WISE only accepts PCX graphics... but I think PCX is no accepted by
any PC browser. What must I do? Transform every graphic to PCX and
change de image tags of the HTML document to point to the PCX files?

Convert all graphics to PCX format. You don't need to change the
tags. Let the graphics with the same name (.JPG, .GIF), but in PCX format.
Anyway, the PCX-only support is for now. Later, of course, WISE
will support JPEG and GIF files.
