I'm using Dragon NaturallySpeaking, and I do most of my communication by
email. But there are lots of people who prefer text messages.

Do you have a favorite way of sending and receiving text messages?

RE: [QUAD-L] employer/employee contracts to share

2018-11-07 Thread Dave Krehbiel
Dana, sorry to hear about the third-degree burns.

I bought an oven thermometer for less than 10 dollars so that aides can easily
check the temperature of my coffee.

My aides like it, as they are being careful not to give me something that’s too
hot.

I enjoy it, because I can safely enjoy coffee at my favorite temperature
(between 139-140 degrees Fahrenheit).

Drink aide has gone out of business, so the fleximug is a safer choice. I have
had the drink aide for several years, and we’ve replaced the mug itself with a
generic one. I also have another large drink cup that we put a long flexible
straw in and zip tie it to a roll around stand so I can always get more to
drink.

RE: [QUAD-L] Broken and bruised toes banging into everything

2018-10-10 Thread Dave Krehbiel
Here are a couple of ideas:

You could try steel toed shoes.

you may also be able to bolt a larger steel plate or a piece of word to the
existing plate. On my wheelchair, those steel plates fold upwards, and so if
I tried to add something, I would probably cut and bolt some plywood to the
bottom of those steel plates.

Anyone else have any better ideas?

They usually know what to say when you have a problem like this.

If maybe they will send you to a pulmonologist, who should have a answer for

RE: [QUAD-L] Tipped Over, Ouch

2018-07-09 Thread Dave Krehbiel
Sorry to hear that.

I very nearly tipped over once. We use a barrier free lift with a sleighing to
transfer me to the wheelchair, and (unfortunately) I said on that when I’m up
in the chair. One time I was going full speed downhill and the strap from the
sling got caught in one of the drive wheels. It stopped that we’ll immediately,
and spun me around quickly, but somehow I did not tip over. These days I’m very
careful to be sure that the straps from my sling are securely rolled up.

Another day, I was riding home and noticed that one of my feet and slid off the
foot rest and was dragging on the ground. I asked my wheelchair salesperson
about it, and he said, “oh yes, I know another fellow that happened to, and it
flipped him over and broke his leg in three places.” I wondered, why didn’t
you tell me about this? I guess because he can’t make money selling inexpensive
straps. Now, I have an adjustable (and unfortunately, unpadded) strap which my
aides fasten around my ankles and the back of the foot rest of my wheelchair,
keeping my feet on the foot rests.

Take care,

Dave

An inquiry about using multiple microphones with Dragon naturally speaking.

I have two laptops in front of me and I figured out how to put one
microphone to sleep and turn the other one on, by keeping one headset on my
head and one lying on my chest in front of me with the microphone positioned
on top of my left arm. If I turn my head away from the microphone and
whisper very softly into the one on my head, I am able to leave one
microphone on while the other one is off. I just taught myself had to do
this a few days ago out of necessity, because I'm not able at times to even
get a nurse here to take my headset off my head and put the other one on my
head. Sometimes I have to wait many hours before I see a nurse.

What I am inquiring of you is if you know of any way I could control the
microphones on three different laptops consecutively. I have a new laptop
but it is not installed with Dragon yet, but when it is I would like to have
all three of them in front of me. For years I have asked people if there
would be a way to turn one Mike off and the other on and I've always been
told I would have to physically be able to toggle a switch.

I'm certain I am not the only paralyzed person in the world that is using
more than one laptop at a time, especially if someone is writing and having
to do research on one and transpose the information to the other while they
are reading it, which is what I am doing because I am writing a book using
the Bible as reference & it requires reference and research constantly
between one source or the other.. Thank goodness for computers or I would
have to have 10 or more volumes of materials open in front of me on the
table constantly looking from one to the other.

RE: [QUAD-L] Low Air Loss Mattress Question

2017-10-04 Thread Dave Krehbiel
I have the same style mattress. I've had very good luck with it.

I had a similar problem at one point. There is a zipper down the side of the
mattress. If you unzip it, you'll find a collection of tubing which runs from
the air pump to the various cells in your mattress. It is possible that one of
the hoses has come loose.

( The air pump is connected to two sets of tubes. it alternates between
inflating one set, and then the other set.)

If you can find a loose connection, just push the hose back in, and that might
solve your problem.

working properly - the right side will not stay inflated, so the motor is

so well for me - getting me through a pressure ulcer, a flap, recovery and
keeping my skin in amazing shape since last October. I think it is time to
replace this mattress. So, I have a few questions:

1. For those of you who use a low air loss mattress - what kind do you have?
Will it last more than 2 years? Is it comfortable? Is it good for your skin?

2. Does anyone know where I might find someone to repair my pump? I'm on

turned 65. They also say I must have a stage 4 pressure ulcer to qualify for a

Subject: [QUAD-L] Taxicabs for wheelchair users??? With an attendant? Info
needed please

I desperately need to get to one appointment with vocational rehabilitation,
because they will purchase the $40,000 Permobil power chair with a Puff and
sip navigation system so I would not have to be in the bed 24 seven as I
currently have been for years.

They have a rule that without any exceptions, a potential client must show
up at their office for one initial appointment.

I have begged for someone from my family to provide transportation for me to
one appointment for quite a while now, and it is become painfully obvious no
one is going to step up to the plate and assist me in this endeavor, so I'm
asking you guys what can I do to hire somebody like a taxi for wheelchair
people and an attendant, because I'm paralyzed from the neck down so I
cannot possibly use my arms to wheel myself around to even get into the
building.

I don't even know what to search for to find out how to do this so please
explain it to me as if I knew nothing, because I truly don't know anything
about this. Since my arms became paralyzed, I've only been out of my room at
the nursing home on Thanksgiving and Christmas when one of my children would
come take me home each year.

And to sit in the horrible wheelchair they provide for me at the nursing
home, is so uncomfortable I cry even though they line it with bed pillows
underneath my bottom and back and feet. And when I had my power chair, the
chair was fully articulating and was much more comfortable than being in
bed. Whenever I needed to I could reposition myself in the chair without
having to wait for somebody to come assist me, which is a constant dilemma
in an understaffed nursing home.

As an aside, I need someone to come stretch my legs and arms every day to
move them because I get unbearable cramps which I did not get when I had a
volunteer coming to stretch me every day, but she had to go back north.
Please advise me as to how I could hire someone to do this or get someone
from Medicaid to provide this service for me.

RE: [QUAD-L] Help for a urinary tract infection

2017-09-09 Thread Dave Krehbiel
Regarding the cloudiness: my urine used to be cloudy. At the time, I was asking
my aides to add lemon juice to my water, hoping that it would decrease UTIs and
help me drink more water. But then I read on this forum that lemon juice can
result in cloudy urine. I discontinued the lemons, and the cloudiness went away.

Regarding UTIs, I have heard that cranberry juice is a good thing. Good luck.

I currently have a uti. My urine is very cloudy when I look at it but my temp
is only 99.1. Ive had much worse in my quad years but still I don't think it
will go away on its own. Any suggestions on how to possibly get rid of this
without a doc visit and cipro? I cant really drink tons at once because I
straight cathe and leak a bit( that's another issue). Any insight would be
appreciated, cant get to doc until next week.

RE: [QUAD-L] question about contracting muscles atrophying, etc.

2017-06-11 Thread Dave Krehbiel
Regarding contraction, while in a nursing home, I had a similar problem to a
lesser extent. In order to straighten my arms, they attached some sort of a
pillow or a brace to each arm to try to straighten each arm and to help hold
it straight. This sounds to me like a job for a physical therapist or
occupational therapist. It helped me. After using the device, I have become
a better extending and straightening my arms while in bed.

In the long-term, you might consider e-stim. If your biceps are contracted,
that means that your triceps are extending and lengthening. You can
electrically stimulate your triceps, and other muscles, to help them
contract and strengthen. If you have partial control over your triceps, this
can help you increase that control.

If you Google estim, unfortunately, you will find a number of sexually
related devices.

But here is a place you can start:
http://www.lgmedsupply.com/tensproducts.html

after the system has been selected and configured and placed on the
appropriate muscles, is relatively easy for people who are not physical
therapists to attach the pads and device.

Has anyone else tried this? How did this work for you?

Take care,

RE: [QUAD-L] Who cares for the family caregivers?

2017-05-19 Thread Dave Krehbiel
My wife works full-time. We have caregivers to provide activities of daily
living, and since she has good insurance through the state of Maryland, I've
been able to see a variety of doctors and nurses and so forth. But she has
been taking care of me at the expense of taking care of herself. And she
spends time nearly every day fighting with insurance companies and various
service providers while at work. The daily battles are taking their toll.

It seems to me that being a family caregiver can be very socially isolating.
Someone on this forum said, the majority of people they are friends with now
are people they met after the accident. The two of us can't go to many
social events (e.g. a 30th wedding anniversary party for good friends)
because most homes are not wheelchair accessible. Most social events have to
be here, and that needs cleaning up before, cooking, shopping, hosting, and
cleaning up afterwards. Regarding maid service, I think that could be very
helpful, especially around the holidays.

RE: [QUAD-L] Question about headset for Dragon NaturallySpeaking and listening to videos

2017-05-08 Thread Dave Krehbiel
I have had pretty good luck using Google home and Chromecast (plugged into
an HDMI port of a TV). I can access video playlists. I would like to find a
way to set up my own playlists using my PC and access them via voice. I've
also used this technology to connect Netflix. The search function using
Google home is not as powerful or precise as www.google.com

One big advantage of watching videos using Google Home and Chromecast is
that you can use your voice to pause and rewind videos. after it is set up
(which requires a smart phone or tablet) you don't need a PC or microphone
or headset. You need a Google account, WiFI access, Google Chromecast ($25),
Google Home ($114), access to a TV or monitor with an HDMI port, and someone
to configure it using a tablet or smartphone. One advantage is, since the
video is not running on the computer, it doesn't seem to interfere us much
with running Dragon NaturallySpeaking at the same time.

I had been using an external "shotgun" microphone on a microphone stand,
attached to a very large and heavy duty rolling cart I use as a rolling
computer table for my all in one computer. I was using the computers
speakers, and that worked okay. I did not need to wear a headset, and I was
not connected by any wires to the computer mouse up in the chair, but it was
difficult to watch YouTube videos because the sound from the computer
speakers was picked up by my microphone.

recently my microphone stand broke, and so I have begun using the internal
microphone on my computer. After some retraining with Dragon
NaturallySpeaking, it works pretty well for applications without audio. If I
want to watch YouTube videos on the computer, or go to websites with audio,
or make phone calls using Skype, I can ask someone to plug in and put on an
audio headset. if I am surfing the web, I will often plug in the headset
even though I am not wearing it, so that Dragon does not get confused if I
end up in a website with audio text.

I'm at home, and not a nursing home, and I have my own private TV. If I were
in a nursing home, I would probably buy another microphone stand and attach
it to my rolling table, since this is much easier for aides to understand
and position. The microphone worked best when it was positioned about 1 inch
away from my mouth. You will need a heavy-duty table, a microphone stand, a
set of wired headsets, and a shotgun microphone.

My biggest headache with these various options is voicemail. It is very easy
to use Skype to make phone calls, but I find it very difficult to navigate
voicemail. I think the solution is to set up a Dragon macro which will
initiate a call and then bring up the Skype keypad to navigate voicemail by
voice.

Good luck, and take care,

Subject: [QUAD-L] Question about headset for Dragon NaturallySpeaking and
listening to videos

My headset and microphone I use for Dragon NaturallySpeaking is giving me
difficulties because a nurse moved it earlier today and I told her not to
(98% of the people in nursing homes are mentally demented, and I am treated
like one of them sometimes) because it is so difficult to get it put back
on to my ears in a position where I can hear the sound. It is now 6 hours
later and I've had 3 people try to adjust them without hitting the sweet
spot. It is a game of chance just to hit the right spot and I'm tired of
playing it. It is especially aggravating to me because I study something
using YouTube videos and obviously I cannot hear them without my headset
being positioned properly. It would be all right if I could use my arms to
position them myself and not be dependent on other people to help me; as it
is, I am in a nursing home in Florida and they are chronically understaffed
and caring for a quadriplegic is really overextending what they have time to
do. I had no difficulties when I just had paralyzed legs but when my arms
became paralyzed and I needed someone to do everything I was doing with my
hands, private nursing care is really required, and unless one of my
children marries a billionaire I don't suppose I'll be receiving private
care in this lifetime, unless I could move to another state. Florida is the
worst place to get crippled in because they spend the least money on
handicap people.

Anyway back to the problem at hand. I am using a

Sennheiser PC 8 USB - Stereo USB Headset for PC and MAC with In-line Volume
and Mute Control

headset currently and it is lightweight and doesn't cause any pain when I
must wear it 24 7 which my original headset did, And actually put blisters
on my ears. The problem is I have it positioned exactly, or I cannot hear
with it. I was wondering if anyone else is using something that they can
hear with whenever it is put back on their head without a lot of adjusting
and moving around. Please tell

RE: [QUAD-L] Mouth stick

2017-04-24 Thread Dave Krehbiel
A big problem with Dragon NaturallySpeaking is, you can use it to control
just about every program except Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

For example, there is no way you can use voice controls when you are trying
to train the program.

I also had the problem with multiple profiles on Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
My solution was to delete all the other profiles, leaving just one single
profile. Then I can restart or reboot without assistance.

Good luck,

I need one very badly and I wish you would tell me what works for you
please. I am in nursing home and so it takes about an hour or so for me to
get someone to my room to assist me so I need some way to grab it into my
mouth independently. I have my laptop sitting on the over the bed table in
front of me in my bed. I thought maybe there would be some kind of a holder
that the stick would lay in and I could lean my head forward and grab the
end of it with my mouth perhaps.

It is imperative I have one to be able to touch my computer screen when
necessary when I am doing a restart and have to open the profile for Dragon
NaturallySpeaking. I have the Smart speech program which is supposed to open
the profiles automatically, and was written by a quadriplegic so that he
would be able to use his computer independently without waiting for
assistance but it worked for a few months as advertised and then suddenly it
stopped loading the profile for me so I have to touch the screen to touch
the open button.

It is such a great blessing to have others to talk to that are in my
situation and have answers no one else can provide without the experience of
being like this. Lorrie Michelson was kind enough to tell me about you guys
and I'm so appreciative for the information. I hate do is say this, but I
have always gotten all my useful and valuable information from other people
in my situation sharing their day-to-day living experiences with me. Thank

[QUAD-L] Power wheelchair getting stuck on oriental rug.

2017-03-09 Thread Dave Krehbiel
We have hardwood floors, and in one room we have an oriental rug. At first I
was able to drive my chair into the room without any problems. But lately,
my wheelchair seems to be grabbing the Oriental rug, and the rug and up
wrapped around my drive wheels.

Maybe it is because the rug is getting older. Maybe it is because I'm
driving a different wheelchair. But I'm wondering, has anyone else had this
problem? I'm considering buying one of those clear plastic mats people buy
to put under their desks in office spaces, and to use that as a sort of a
pathway for bridge onto the rug.

Does anyone have any experience or suggestions or ideas?

RE: [QUAD-L] Back, pain, back!!!

2017-01-19 Thread Dave Krehbiel
Sorry to hear about the pain. I don't know if any of these ideas will help,
but here goes.

Some time ago, I had a problem with shoulder pain, and I scheduled an
appointment with a physical therapist. She said that in many cases shoulder
pain can be caused by poor positioning in the wheelchair. We made an
appointment for someone to check the armrests on my chair. The armrests were
replaced with wider armrests, and they were raised several inches, and my
shoulders started feeling a lot better.

A second option might be electronic stimulation. Your shoulder joint
requires a certain amount of stabilization by muscles and tendons, and I'm
guessing that some of those muscles are falling down on the job these days.
You can hook up a device which will stimulate and contract and strengthen
those muscles, helping to stabilize the joint, and possibly also reducing
the amount of pain. I don't know what the regulations are where you live,
but the preference of the physical therapists in Maryland is to train aides
to set up and turn on the equipment two or three times per week.

Another thing which has helped me is hot showers. I have a shower chair (I
can send a picture if you like) and a shower I can roll into. These days I
mostly get bed baths. But I had an aide a few years ago that would give me a
shower once a week, and that always made me feel better.

I am a C-4/C-5 quadriplegic, and so I have partial control over my
shoulders. When I'm laying on my back, I contract and exercise the muscles I
have, and that seems to reduce the pain for me.

Good luck, and take care,

Dave Krehbiel

[QUAD-L] Regarding Medicare

2017-01-09 Thread Dave Krehbiel
I don't want to get too political, but I would like to make a comment on
health insurance in general.

I don't know if insurance is the right word.

For example, if I have car insurance, and I wrecked my car, I'm not
prevented from having a checking account or trying to work for a living. I
don't have auditors and regulators and who knows who looking at my family's

If I have home insurance, and my home burns down, the government doesn't

insurance to me.

RE: [QUAD-L] Room Automation

2017-01-09 Thread Dave Krehbiel
I'm very new to the area of home automation. My son bought me Google Home for
Christmas. For me right now it has limited functionality. It will tell me the
time, or start a TV series on Netflix, or begin a series of TED videos.

I have heard that it can be connected to other home automation devices, e.g.
smart lightbulbs. Personally, my money would be on Google. I doubt seriously
that they have the best technology. But Google is a monster in the market.
Betamax was much better than VHS, but as VHS took over, the market followed.

Right now I have Google home connected to a Samsung Smart TV via ChromeCast. I
have been pleasantly surprised so far.

I just did a quick Google search, and I saw some complaints that Google home
does not do basic home automation things right now. But what does the future
hold? If I knew, I'd be at the racetrack.

By the way, the system is constantly listening in case you give it some sort of
a command. In other words, it is spying on you. I have no idea how much
information is collected, or who is collecting it, or why, so I don't recommend
planning any nefarious activities in your new media room.

Good luck, and take care,

Guys and Ladies,

I’m taking the plunge and building a new room. Call the man cave but by any

and Food).

I grew up the oldest of 12 children, when I was 12 years old there were six of
us, all boys. By the time I was 17 my mother stop having children. I finally
got my own bed by joining USAF. (Couldn’t sleep for two weeks because I was not
used to sleeping alone.) So you see I am use to living with children, We were
pcrobably were as bad as my grandchildren.

There seems to be a circle in life. You know, what goes around comes around.
This will be my 28th year in the chair. My body is breaking down more quickly
now. Stress sores, pressure sores, toe amputations and all the things that
quads live with are making Billy cantankerous. I don’t want my grandchildren to
remember me as an unloving curmudgeon who does nothing but growl and yell.

So, back to the new room. I want to take time and automate some functions
sensibly. I have enough money set aside for a conversion of the garage 20’ x
12’ into a multimedia room. I’m trying to decide which automation protocol to
use. Here is where I need help. I would love to automate lighting, power on
devices such as stereo receivers, TV and associated control boxes (Verizon).
This seems to me a good place to start and it is imperative that the system
allow me to expand to other devices (heat, air conditioning security devices
etc.The system must be voice controlled.

I eliminated X10 protocol because of costs and I believe it to be a closed
proprietary system. (Only IR communications and no API). So, I would like to
stay with devices that connect via my Wi-Fi.

Phillips Hue bulbs and its associated controller seems like a good way to
start. Their starter kit comes with three bulbs and integrate seamlessly with
Alexa, IOS And Siri.

Automating the power to a 65 inch OLED LG TV and a smart receiver Onkyo 7.2
will be done via smart Plugs, again by voice. Connection achieved by Bluetooth
or Wi-Fi via IP addresses.

So, I would appreciate any and all comments, help, tips and the like . Thank
you quad buddies .

Have you seen this one? I found it with a Google search. Apparently it costs
about $895

Also, have you considered a beach wheelchair? From looking at the pictures,
it looks like they would perform much better in sand. If you live somewhere
in the ocean, you may be able to rent one and try it out.

Does anyone know where I can buy an off-road manual wheelchair that I can
push through sand/gravel? All the manual chairs have those skinny tires that
get stuck in anything and the knobby tire bikes are built for paraplegics
that can use their hands. My husband cannot even drive his power chair so I
need to push him along but would like to enjoy the outdoors with him. HELP!
Can't afford the off-road power wheelchairs and my husband cannot drive them

RE: [QUAD-L] QUAD-L] Camera?

2016-09-01 Thread Dave Krehbiel
I was considering getting a camera once. I had a bracket on my prior wheelchair
which was intended attach a tray. I figured I could rig up some sort of a way
to attach a camera, which I could aim by steering the wheelchair and by leaning
forward and backwards. And I found a device used trigger the shutter remotely,
and it looked like something which I could attach to my wrist splints and bite
on to take the picture. I never tried it. But maybe that, or something similar,
could work. Good luck.

That is one of the things I miss the most (photography). My husband was an avid
photographer and three of the best of the best digital cameras (first a Kodak
purchased in 1998, then an Olympus... both of which were big and bulky which
were okay for him and I can't hold a camera anyway). I finally got after him to
purchase a smaller sized digital camera and he finally purchased a Canon that
he was able to keep in his T. shirt pocket. It took/takes great videos as well.

Anyway, my point is that I can't hold I camera at all so I always have to have
someone take photos for me which doesn't happen anymore. My life has become one
big medical problem. Further, after purchasing my first Smart Phone when living
at my sister's... that takes just as good of pictures so family members took
pictures for me using that.

I would love to know how people with only the use of one arm and one wrist take
photos by themselves without some elaborate system. I need to be able to drive
my chair and be able to turn it (my chair and the camera) every which way to
take photos of anything when out and about by myself.

[QUAD-L] I'm looking for a better way to click a mouse button

2016-07-04 Thread Dave Krehbiel
Right now I'm using Dragon NaturallySpeaking, and for me the most tedious
part is moving and clicking the mouse.

I would like to deliver a presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint or
something similar, and I would like to have some sort of a hardware option
to click a mouse. ( I would probably either shut off the Dragon
NaturallySpeaking microphone or exit the program before delivering the
presentation.)

Is there anyway I can use one of my existing micro switches? Maybe modify a
standard mouse, removing the ball and trying to enlarge the mouse button?
Any ideas or suggestions are very much appreciated.

Thanks so much, and take care,

RE: [QUAD-L] just another day in quadadise

2016-04-22 Thread Dave Krehbiel
My experience over the past eight years has been that many companies who
provide services to quadriplegics provide a low level of service (and typically
at a higher price). I think that is because they are small specialized
companies who don't have a lot of competition.

Severely disabled folks like us have an increased need for services, and a
decreased ability to pay for them.

There are some companies out there (such as a local landscaping company, in my
case) who provide services at a discount or free to the long-term seriously
disabled. I used to rake my own leaves, and paint my own house, and change my
own oil, and so forth. Now our family has to pay people to do all these things.
I keep wondering if there might be a way to create a directory of local
companies that will offer service discounts to people with long-term
disabilities. Or if there might be a way to identify and advertise local
community minded businesses, and subsidize services.

For example, I'd like to find restaurants who would give a discount to people
in wheelchairs. After all, I can't visit most people in their own homes, and I
cannot be as hospitable as I would like to be here at my house, and so local
restaurants would be a great place to get together. And I would like to be able
to buy discounted restaurant certificates as a way to say thank you to
volunteers who come and help with household tasks.

If anybody has interest in this sort of thing, or has contacts at a nonprofit
which has programs along a similar line, please let me know.

Thanks, and take care,

[QUAD-L] regarding UTIs and suprapubic catheters

2016-04-05 Thread Dave Krehbiel
I have had a suprapubic catheter for over eight years, and overall things
have worked well.

At first, I was on a schedule to change the catheter monthly. The last week
of the month, there would typically be problems. Things would get cloudy, or
clog up, or leak. I was able to change the schedule so that the catheter was
changed every three weeks. I've had very few problems since then.

I have tried to avoid taking too many antibiotics, because they seem to
result in diarrhea. And I don't want to create a colony of superbugs who are
resistant to antibiotics, in case I have a big problem in the future.

If you are having catheter -related problems, you might want to keep an eye
on when they occur. If they are occurring the week before your catheter is
scheduled to be changed, you might try asking if your catheter could be
changed a bit more frequently.

I ask because I recently had to have abdominal surgery because of an ileus and
have to radically rethink how I manage my bowels. I had heard that quads can
develop a mega-colon because of reduced motility in the bowels. A normal
person's colon is 6 feet long. Mine is 12. Here's the thing - nobody seems to
know if that's abnormal. I guess the number of 30 year quads that have had
abdominal surgery is small. Anyway I used to do my bowel program
Monday,Wednesday Friday. I was taking metamucil twice a day and on bowel
program days I took a magic cleanse and 2 senecot. I ate bran cereals and
activia yogurt every day too.
What do you do?

Sorry to hear about your wife, but you have come to the right place. Personally
I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking on a Windows 8 PC, and I use my computer to
change the channels on the television using the xfinity web site. press my
television is seven or so years old, and I'm sure the newer models have
additional wireless functionality. And there is a program called Remoku which
allows you to control your Roku box (for Netflix) using your computer browser.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking can be quite frustrating. I find it is most accurate
and least frustrating when you dictate letter by letter. It is tedious to try
to move the mouse using Dragon. And some Windows software doesn't work very
well with Dragon. But I use it every day nonetheless.

Regarding friends: someone on this forum once said that most of their current
friends are people they have met post accident. I have found this to be true in
my case as well. I have a number of wonderful friends who have stuck with me
over the years, but a much larger number of my former friends I just don't see
anymore. Don't be afraid to go out and make new friends.

I would like to hear from anyone about what kind of wheelchair cushion you may

Question two, does anybody use memory foam or T foam? If you do use either,

Question three, if anyone has ever had seat mapping, do you have any type of a
wedge placed under your cushion to shift weight differently?

I sometimes feel offended when some person who has a different injury than mine
and much more support than I have is presented in the news as a role model. The
TV show seem to present the idea that the reason this person is overcoming
their difficulties is because of their strength of character and positive
mental attitude and persistence. The implication is: the rest of us just are
not trying hard enough and have a bad attitude.

The reality is: some of us are having a pretty rough go of it. But nobody wants

[QUAD-L] Some Questions About Fund-Raising

It takes a certain amount of infrastructure to accept credit cards and

A big problem with fundraising is: people are most likely to make a donation

Subject: [QUAD-L] am I cold, or am I hot

I've mentioned this before, but I never heard if anyone else was
experiencing the same problem. I can sit in the sun for long times in hot
weather and feel fine. A few times I have gotten overheated, but at those
times I felt hot and overheated. And in Seattle at night I would use a
blanket, a sheet, and a heavy comforter. And all through the night I felt
toasty warm.

But the last few years when I'm in bed daytime or night, but mostly
nighttime. Just using a sheet and one blanket. When my arms are covered. I
can feel like I am freezing cold, I can even be shivering. I can turn up the
heat, I can add a blanket, but I just feel colder. I often check my
temperature and it is about 97 or there about, my normal temperature is
about 96.5. I am so sure that I am cold, my arms feel like all the hair is
standing up and my arms are shaking. Then I realize what must be happening,
that I'm overheated. So I uncover my arms and at first, when the air gets my
arms I feel even a bit colder. But as my arms cool off they start to feel
better, no longer hot or cold. But then in the middle of the night they get
cold again from being uncovered. So it is damned if I do, damned if I don't.

My arms often feel cold and tingly, except when the sun is shining on them.
But only when under covers do they get to bad. When I sit under the furnace
vent and get warm I don't shivering like that. When I fall asleep with my
arms covered I wake up shivering, my arms are clenched tight, and I would
bet everything I have that I am cold. Obviously I would lose that bet.

I can't figure out how to stay warm night, without feeling like I'm
freezing.

RE: [QUAD-L] SelectAir air mattress

2014-01-27 Thread Dave Krehbiel
I have an air mattress, which alternates pressure between different
sections. Yes, it is harder to get warm, because the air pump is blowing
cold air into the mattress, and probably through the mattress and under your
sheets.

The good news is: cooler temperatures and alternating pressures help to
reduce wounds.

The bad news is the cold. I sleep with three blankets and sometimes a wool
cap to keep warm.

year or so he healed completely. One additional tip: lots of protein. I was
surprised to learn that the number one source of protein is cottage cheese
(at least on the list from the rehab facility.).

I told my wife I needed more protein, and requested that she bring me a
prime rib steak once a week. I don't know if the steak helped, but it didn't
hurt.

Over time, the wound was reduced in size to less than the size of a marble,

Families who have been impacted by disability have an increased need for
services, and a decreased ability to pay for them. Before my accident, I

and file them for me at a discounted price.

I would like to suggest that there is a need for an organization to
encourage service companies to step up and offer free or discounted services
to families impacted by disability.

For example: since my accident, I have lost contact with a number of friends
and Associates. I would like to meet them someplace for a dinner or a drink.
Since they don't know what to do or how to deal with someone with a
disability, they tend to do nothing. I need to be the one who instigates the
lunch or dinner. Since I am inviting someone else, I need to be prepared to
pay for it. The reality is: my friend will most likely pick up the tab. A
restaurant who sells gift certificates to families of the disabled at a 50
percent discount will most likely end up getting more business at full fare.

There would be challenges and difficulties in setting up such an
organization. For example, what exactly counts as a disability? How can we
be sure that people are not abusing the program? How can the program be
promoted to the companies who might provide services and to the people most
eligible to receive discounted assistance?

I have some ideas about how to address these problems. I've begun talking to

RE: [QUAD-L] Standing wheelchair' anyone have one ? If so pros and cons?

2013-01-28 Thread Dave Krehbiel
I definitely plan to get a standing wheelchair. Before my accident five
years ago, I was 6 feet tall. These days, I'm looking up at everybody. I did
some therapy in a standing frame at a local rehab facility, and it was an
incredibly emotional experience. The world looks like an entirely different
place when you're standing at your traditional height.

I understand the standing frames and standing wheelchairs have many other
benefits: strengthening bones, increasing flexibility, assisting with
digestion, and other benefits related to blood pressure.

My plan is to try to raise some funds to build a shed, so that I can get a
standing frame or standing wheelchair as well as a generator.

I absolutely concur that you need to be evaluated properly. The physical
therapist did not start me in a standing frame... they started with a tilt
table. Raising your head so far up in the air is a challenge when you been
sitting down and lying down for so long. But my insurance covers this... and
I hope yours does too.

I personally hope that in everyone's life, they have the opportunity to try
out a standing wheelchair. Some of the benefits can be overwhelming.
However, I usually advise that a Standing Evaluation, with an Occupational
Therapist to determine if and how long one can stand, vertical. Some with
low blood pressure may pass out with a quick stand. Some can not operate a
manual stander because of strength issues. A motorized stander might work
better then a manual unit. By all means, if you meet the perimeters... Go

“modified sinewave” power. The modified sinewave is less expensive and is
perfectly acceptable for large motors in refrigerators and sump pumps, but I
have heard that this could be dangerous to batteries and sensitive electronic
devices. In other words, a backup or generation solution which works perfectly
fine for your sump pump could possibly ruin your bed, computer, and so forth.

I'm not an engineer or an electrician. But maybe you might want to research
this a bit further before you plug in your sensitive devices. If anybody has
more information about this topic, I'd sure like to know about it.

Good luck, and take care,

Subject: [QUAD-L] Back-up power for our beds ~ solution!

Hi All,
Remember when Hurricane Sandy hit and we were all talking about a back-up
system to power our beds if the power goes out? Well, I thought of a solution …
sump pump back-up battery! My brother is an electrician and he said these
back-up battery systems would be perfectly safe for in the bedroom.

The way they would work is you plug in the back-up battery directly into a
wall outlet, then plug your bed into the back-up battery. The entire time the
battery is plugged in it is being charged. Then you plug in your bed directly
into the back-up battery system. You can have a light or TV plugged in as well,
but the more you drain from the system the shortest it would last. As soon as a
power outage would happen the sump pump back-up battery would automatically
switch on … you wouldn't even need to be home.

The sump pump back-up battery cost anywhere from $150-$800 depending on how
may Amps you want to have … the higher the cost the longer you'd have back-up
power. They can be bought at a Battery Plus store or Home Depo type stores, if
they don't have them in stock you can have the store order it. You can also
order them on line just Google sump pump back-u battery.

[QUAD-L] does anyone have recommendations for warm boots?

2012-12-05 Thread Dave Krehbiel
Even though I can't feel my feet... I'm thinking it's probably a good idea
to keep them warm in the winter time. I'd like to find some boots or
something, which look relatively nice, are easy for my caregivers to put on,
and are not overly expensive.

I received an e-mail from the Christopher and Dana Reeve foundation, and
they had suggested something called a MocSock. This looks warm and not very
expensive, but it looks like something to wear while indoors.

Any suggestions? Thanks, and take care,

This could be a very big problem. Most of the time, I had no problems
whatsoever following a catheter changed. About four or five times,
something was wrong. In one case, the pain was so terrible I needed to go
to the hospital. Possibly the procedure was done incorrectly. Possibly the
new catheter is blocked or pinched. This might be a serious situation. Call
your nurse now. Insist that another catheter be installed. In an emergency,
you can also try flushing the catheter using a mild solution of distilled

I've done a bit of research into generators, and based on what I have read, an

Apparently, the more expensive generators use things called inverters. And

I had a stage 4 wound , which was at one point about the size of a baseball,

sometimes they need to special order it.

Please take care of yourself. Good luck trying to find a competent wound Dr.

Regarding computer files: the number one tip, which I have found helpful is to
run my applications (Google chrome or Microsoft Outlook or WordPad) in a window
on the left side of my screen, and to run Dragon pad in a small window on the
right side of my screen. This allows me to easily make notes of things like
telephone numbers or website addresses or e-mail addresses, to easily cut and
paste between various applications, and to make notes on a topic from a variety
of sources.

I've also found it very helpful to use Google to search for PDF files. A
typical Google search might be allintitle: term1 term2 filetype:pdf”. This
allows me to allocate a couple hours for searching for information, downloading
it to a issue related subdirectory on my hard drive. In a similar way, I can
search blogs and websites, and save the contents as PDF files in issue related
subdirectories.

If anyone would like specific instructions on how to do these things, please
e-mail me directly.

Also, I am very interested in this same topic. What tips and tricks do you use
to be more productive and efficient with your computer?

Thank you for looking out for your friend. I am sorry, I can't offer any
good advice about your transportation situation. But maybe I can offer some
advice about communications.

I am personally a C4/C5 quad, and initially in the hospital I was similarly
unable to communicate. As a child, I was a Boy Scout, and knew a little bit
of Morse code. I tried to blink a message to family members standing nearby,
but none of them knew Morse code. And I did matter member all of Morse code
myself. I kept hoping that somebody would get a simple cheat sheet so that I
could read the codes and blink and they would understand it, letter by
letter.

Unfortunately, nobody got the message. Today, I've had my trach removed, and
I'm happy that I'm able to communicate more normally.

You might consider printing out a one-page piece of paper containing Morse
code. This might help your friend communicate. For example, if he is having
trouble breathing, he could blink SOS (three short dots, read longer dashes,
three short dots).

I have attached a file containing Morse code in PDF format. Good luck.

Subject: [QUAD-L] Getting Medicare/Medi-Cal Benefits

My friend, a resident of a subacute facility, is a spastic quad with a
trach. He cannot speak. He has no means to signal if he is undergoing
respiratory distress. Finally, he has gotten appointments for occupational
and speech therapy at a rehab center which is in the top 20 nationally. So
we have hope. The problem is his facility is 45 miles away from the rehab
center and his facility’s social services director is saying neither
Medi-Cal nor Medicare will pay for transportation. We could take public
transportation for the disabled but. . .
--- He could require suctioning enroute. While his mother could administer
shallow suctioning (with a Yankauer), the set up of the public disabled
transport isn’t conducive to this since 1) the wheelchair is positioned next
to the driver where she would have no access to her son. And 2) we may be
accompanied by other riders.
--- He has no good anterior head support if he must be seated vertically, in
his wheelchair
--- The trip one-way can take 2 ½ hours instead of the 1 hour it would take
by a non-emergency ambulance. Since he has a G-tube, that 5 hour round trip
and 2 hours of appointments means he has no food or water or meds at least 7
hours.

Are any of you familiar with Medi-Cal or Medicare regulations?
--- Medicare - As I understand it, all Medicare non-emergency medical
transportation (NEMT) requires that there be a medical necessity. Isn’t it a
medical necessity that my friend be able to signal he needs help if his
trach becomes plugged?
--- Medi-Cal I think has the same requirement. They will pay for NEMT if
there is a medical necessity so I would apply my Medicare argument here too.
But also I read that there was a legal case (Valdivia v. Coye) which
required Medi-Cal to expand eligibility to include therapy services when
they’re deemed necessary for a nursing facility resident to attain or
maintain the highest practicable physical, mental or psychosocial
functioning. For my friend, OT ST could do so much to help him toward this
goal. Since he has basically been treated as a custodial case so far, does
the fact that the rehab center recognizes his potential mean that Medi Cal
should provide him means to get to those appointments?

Do you know of any precedent for such a case or maybe you have an example of
a successful Medi-Cal Task Authorization Request that I could show his
facility’s Social Services Director. Do you have know of a medical transport
company in the Metro Los Angeles area that might take on such a case pro
bono or at a significant discount?

Thank you for your help.

P.S. If not, perhaps you know of a forum where folks might have answers for
us? Thanks!

RE: [QUAD-L] Wheelchair supplier problem. ~ HELP ~

2012-09-03 Thread Dave Krehbiel
It is far too easy to let emotions get involved. Unfortunately, all too often,
the people who have problems managing their emotions are the suppliers.

Some suppliers seem to resent the fact that we get some assistance, although we
all know the level of assistance we received is not enough. I would gladly
trade places with anyone of them.

If it were me, I would try to locate the two problems separately. First, I
would repair my existing chair. And this company wants to do it for free, fine.
If they want to do it for a reasonable fee, that's okay. The most likely
scenario is that this difficult provider will offer to provide replacement
parts at a discount from their typical prices.

Naturally, they want to link this repair job to do next purchase. Don't let
them. If they were me, I would set a future date to meet with their
salesperson. If they are smart, they will be sure to fix your wheelchair prior
to this appointment.

After your wheelchair has been repaired, then begin your evaluation of
potential new chairs and potential new vendors.

Unfortunately, prices for quadriplegics are too high. Service levels are poor.
Products are poorly designed. Vendors are insensitive and often incompetent. It
isn't good, it isn't right, but that's the way it is.

I think you will get your best results if you focus on results rather than
emotion.

I am sorry you were treated so poorly. It happens to all of us. But if it were
me, I would view the situation as leverage to get a good deal from a vendor
with whom I have a long track record. As they say, better the devil you know
than the devil you don't.

Good luck,

I'm having problems with my potentiometer, it turns on
even when I'm not tilting or reclining. So I went to CMC, the company I got my

or more years, so I'm seriously considering switching suppliers. Before I go on
, last Thursday I went to Kessler to their wheelchair clinic to get fitted for
a new chair by a different supplier, Wilpage. Standing right next to me was
Eahn, a rep from CMC.
Yesterday Pete and I dropped in on CMC (their only 5 miles away and don't mind
drop-in's) to get my potentiometer adjusted/fixed, a repair man was working on
my chair when a voice called him away. CMC is run by a husband and wife team.
Patti, the wife, came storming out from the back without the repair man and
began YELLING at me and Pete about how they are not going to fix my chair
because she heard I was ordering a chair from another supplier. I told her I
hadn't quite decided which supplier I was going to use and was going through
the possess to gather information. And I reminded her that I HAD a sales rep
from CMC, her company, at my home 3 months before and I had questions but the
sales rep never got back to to date. Patti asked why I was considering using
another supplier Pete (my husband) said communication I told her that an
employe, Dana, NEVER returns my calls or follows through on a RX or repair
request. Patti said OH, we got rid of her because we have been getting a lot
of complaints about her.
Patti went in the back (we heard F this and F that) when she returned she said
she had just gotten off the phone with Kessler and yes it was true that I was
on a fact finding mission and that she was now SO VERY SORRY. Yes, of course we
will fix the potentiometer, will'll even do it for free if you order your chair
from us. THEN Patti disappeared again in the back room and reappeared with Dana
the employee that she JUST said they had let go we just moved her to another
desk she now says, you will never deal with her again, and then Dana
apologized. Now Patti is begging and pleading with us not to go to another
supplier when Carlos, her husband, appears YELLING at Pete and me about how we
should have written a letter to them explaining the communication problem.
Why are the husband and wife, Patti Carlos, yelling at us of hey was us to
stay with them?
We leave not promising anything We need to think about all of this. me and
Pete say … which is very true. As soon as we went directly home, which took 10
minutes, the phone rang and it was the sales rep apologizing, never asking why
I was trying to get a hold of him for 3 months.
The next day I decided to find put how much this part will cost
out-of-pocket instead of waiting 10 to 14 days, $325 is all. So I want to pay
and get reimbursed because I have an appointment at wheelchair clinic again

RE: [QUAD-L] Top Nine Myths about People with Paralysis

2012-08-24 Thread Dave Krehbiel
Thanks, this is a great list.

I would add one other misconception - that we need their help to cross the
street. When I'm trying to cross a road in my wheelchair, some people react
quite unpredictably. For example, people driving on a 4 Lane road will often
try to be polite by stopping and blocking one of the Lanes, probably
thinking that I want to rush across the street through 3 other lanes of
traffic. Often, well-meaning people will stop in the middle of an
intersection, causing traffic back-ups. I am much more interested in
crossing the road safely rather than crossing it quickly. I would prefer
that people act more predictably. I wish they would simply obey the speed
limit, use their turn signals, and put down their cell phones. I'm happy to
wait a minute or two for five until traffic clears out.

What is the # 1 myth you think the general public believes about individuals
living with paralysis?

1. Not interested or can't have sex. (19.0%)
Yes, somethings still work. - Chill

2. Life must be so sad. (18.0%)
A lot of peple think that we are not suppose to be intelligent, productive

Every opportunity I get I let people know that paralysis is so much more

People seem to automatically associate impaired physical function with a

my mind. - Catherine

5. Must not have any pain. (9.9%)
People think, well your paralyzed that means you can't feel anything how
could you possibly have pain? (My husband) lives with indescribable nerve
pain, the worst in his hands and in his feet and butt. - Susan

6. Unable to have a successful career/family/life. (9.2%)
So many people want to blow sunshine up our a**es, or, want to believe that

many of us have come to terms with our respective situations and have chosen
to make the best of it. - CJohn

7. Only medical problem is the paralysis. (8.8%)
There is significant neuropathic pain, bowel and bladder control, fighting
with insurance companies, reduced energy, changed relationships, loss of
independence, lack of access to our homes an no financial help for needed
accessibility adaptions or exercise equipment, increased infections
(especially UTIs)' and lack of appropriate sensation that allows for some
spectacular accidents (and AD). - Shel

8. Have all expenses paid by the government. (3.9%)
So, how do you get by? Social Security? Yeah, because we, as individuals,
are part of a disadvantaged minority group, we all must either be on the
government dole, or looking for a handout. And because the former must be
true, we all must be liberals. - CJohn

9. Always want help. (3.5%)
No matter what an someone is, I should alway's be nice and gratefully

All of the above are myths, some are just more pervasive.

Hi Danny,

What type of bluetooth microphone do you use with Dragon? And are you using
Dragon on a PC ore a phone?

I still use a wired headset with Dragon and my laptop but would like to go
wireless if it would work well (all day long, is comfortable, is accurate,
is easy to engage).

Have you tried exercise, using electronic muscular stimulation?

I visited a physical therapy location, and they sat me on an exercise bike
and attached some electrodes, and my legs started pedaling.

Also, they recommended an e-stim machine for home use. I use a twin stim
which cost about $125 (not covered by my insurance). A physical therapist
configured the equipment trained some of my aides to apply electrodes.

Here is a link to a company offering similar products:

Maybe if you can get some muscles firing, it will increase your heart rate.

Good luck,

Subject: [QUAD-L] lack of energy

Do any of you guys struggle with being tired/weak all the time? Over the
last few years it's gotten pretty bad where sometimes I can barely move(what
movement I actually have). I think it's in large part due to diet. I don't
get hungry very often so I usually end up forgetting/skipping lunch. I've
been thinking about trying meal replacement bars(easier than shakes and
don't have to be very hungry to get one down) and was wondering if you guys
might have some suggestions?

Also another possible cause I thought of was slow bowels. I do a bowel
program every other night using enemeez and take miralax as needed, but
every time I get a KUB(get kidney stones regularly) they point out that my
bowels are full even if a did a bowel program the night before. The only
time I feel like I'm starving is after a massive blowout(definitely not
worth it).

Dehydration could also be a cause, because some morning and early afternoons
my kidneys are in overdrive.

This lack of energy definitely hinders me and I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks,

2012-06-27 Thread Dave Krehbiel
I am not a doctor, so don't count on me for medical advice. I'm sure you can do
a Google search to get some information on this.

Sometimes, when something is wrong and you can't feel it, your body will react
by giving you a headache, high blood pressure and/ or chills, or some other
sensation. In my case, I have a Supra-pubic catheter, and when it gets blocked
or is kinked, I start getting weird sensations. In one case, when apparently
the catheter was inserted incorrectly, I was admitted to the hospital with
extremely high blood pressure and an unbelievable headache.

So if you are feeling weird or strange, it might be your body trying to tell
you that your shoes are too tight or something is pinching you. Or there is
some other thing which is wrong.

She told me that narcotics are not prescribed to parapelgics and the only

I sure have issues with the back of my chair. The back curves a bit side to
side, but is straight up and down. When I lean back, my shoulders go back and
my lower back wants to stick out forward. If I try and sit comfortable my
shoulder are a few inches from the back, but it can get tiring sitting like
that. So I put a foam strip across the top of my chair’s back. It does help
quite a bit. So I’m going to try cutting a piece of foam into a wedge to fit
more naturally. Does anyone’s chair back have a slope on the top? Or a lumbar
lump on it?

I also am trying to get my lateral supports fixed. They are to far apart and
the pads are not long enough. So I get a call from the shop asking for my 20%
co-pay... $1,200... I said “No %#@ way. They wanted to order some custom
brackets, pads, and swing away arms. That for $6,000. I have the swing away
supports, I just want them moved in and new pads. They didn’t coast near that.
I was thinking my co-pay no more than $100 after labor. No wonder Medicare is
going broke... They OKed it. They got to get better chair backs. I’ve looked
around, but can’t find just the right kind.

RE: [QUAD-L] Computer Access

2012-02-16 Thread Dave Krehbiel
Sorry to be late in responding. I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking to compose
e-mails and to control the computer. I also use Dragon NaturallySpeaking
control the mouse. It is tedious, but it works.

At first I used a headset. This was difficult because it would be
uncomfortable if I was turned in bed. But the worst problem was: the headset
kept me tethered to my computer. If I was in my room, sitting in my
wheelchair, and our family had company, I was stuck where I was.

About six months ago I got a shotgun microphone. This is a directional
microphone and it allows me to pull up to my computer and operate it,
without wearing a headset which is cabled to it. This works pretty well. If
I were to buy it again, I would buy a gooseneck stand for the microphone so
that I could position my mouth as close to the microphone as possible.

My main problem relates to audio from the computer. For example, if I get to
a YouTube site, the audio from the computer is picked up by the microphone
and interferes with my control of the computer. Some websites start talking
to you... and this creates problems as well. If I am planning on starting to
any unknown sites, I try to remember to mute the microphone (using control
panel).

If you want any more information, let me know.

Take care,

[QUAD-L] a suggestion for Skype users

2011-12-24 Thread Dave Krehbiel
Does anybody use Skype? I use Skype to dial the phone, controlling my
commuter with Dragon NaturallySpeaking. For three dollars a month I can call
anywhere in the United States.

Unfortunately, the latest release of Skype is very difficult to use with
Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Specifically, the new version seems to open
windows in random places on the screen, making it very difficult to position
the mouse to end calls. Also, the dial pad (which you need to navigate
voicemail and automated answering systems) is also difficult to navigate to
in Skype version 5.0

I have found it much easier to run an older version: Skype version
4.2.0.187. You can download the previous version from www.oldapps.com

After downloading, the first time you run the older version, go to tools /
options / advanced so that you can configure Skype NOT to automatically
update to the latest version.

You will have access to all your old telephone numbers and contacts. If you
need any additional advice or assistance, please send me an e-mail.

Hi all,

I have a rather long, wood-decking ramp leading into the house that freezes
over quickly whenever there is moisture in the air and the temperature drops
to freezing, sort of like the bridges freezing over first on the roads. You
don't even notice the ice until you step on it so it is particularly
dangerous to visitors. This ramp also serves as the main entrance into our
home so everyone who visits uses the ramp. There are handrails on both
sides for the length of the ramp, but it is still treacherous when iced
over.

Do any of you know of something I can do to the ramp to make it less
hazardous? Salt doesn't help much, and when we do use it I fear my mother
will slip and fall (again) while applying it. I'm thinking maybe adding
some type of raised strip (low profile) every foot or so, but what material
should I use? Will this even help?

Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Pardon the pun in the subject line, but I was wondering how we might go

I know that some people on this list would be interested in the subject of
sexuality while others would not, and might even find it offensive. We lost
a subscriber yesterday, I suspect because we got a bit too graphic about
'the boys.' So, I'm thinking this is not the best place to discuss this
topic. Maybe there's a forum that already exists for the topic of SCI and
sex?

Is it possible to start a sub-list of people on here who wanted to have a
candid discussion about this topic, knowing that there is the probabilty of
offensive language or information in such a discussion? It's an important
topic and I'm guessing more than a few would be interested.

Any thoughts [without getting graphic]?

Regarding lateral support... how many seatbelts are you using? . I have two
seatbelts. One is a standard seatbelt down around my waist. The second is a
large padded seatbelt up around my chest, which helps my lateral supports

Re: shoulder pain... I had lots of trouble with shoulder pain, but it is

I'm in an Invacare TDX5 and am having lots of issues with back / shoulder
pains.
Anyone have any good advise of chair backs and lateral supports?
One issue is the lateral supports to hold my ribs straight, my spine is
curving now. So my right side has to push my ribs in and the left side has
to keep the right side from pushing me over. Though having those pads on my
sides irritates the inside of my arms by getting in the way, but if too
small they don't work well.
I use a Roho cushion and it helps my butt, but it's not real stable and
after 1 recline I trend to move just a bit to my left. That screws up my
lateral supports from working correctly.
This chair has no real frame area to attach any pad supports to keep my hips
from sliding over.
I've seen almost u shaped custom backs that are molded to your back. That
sounds good, but I'd hate to go there then not like it and it's not like you
can try it first. Anyone try one of those?
I'd need it to come almost all the way around the sides, but not bother my
arms when moving them around.
Thanks, Greg
