irritates the old folks who have to have everything the same like there

Navigating with GPS is making our brains lazy

Close Google Maps to get a mental workout

By Rob Verger April 4, 2017

Manhattan street map

A map of Manhattan showing a metric called "closeness centrality" that
describes how connected a street is to the whole larger network of
streets, with red indicating more connections and blue the opposite.

Kinda Al Sayed and Joao Pinelo Silva

Navigation apps like Google’s Waze reduce the amount of mental power it
takes to get from one place to another—and researchers can now literally
see the difference in brain activity. A recent study is helping
scientists get a better grasp of just how our brain function changes
when navigating from memory versus following turn-by-turn directions.

To learn more about how our brains process networks like city streets,
neuroscientists and cognitive scientists from University College London
(UCL) and other institutions conducted a study in which two dozen
participants first walked around the London neighborhood of Soho. None
of the participants were familiar that busy neighborhood, which is a
“really dense pack of streets with lots of cafes and bars—really
colorful place,” says Hugo Spiers, the study’s senior author and a
neuroscientist in the department of behavioral psychology at UCL. The
subjects then took a test to see how well they’d learned the urban
landscape. “It’s pointless scanning someone who is completely lost,” he
says.

The next day, in the lab, the subjects were asked to navigate those
streets virtually by looking at an interactive film, while an fMRI
machine monitored their brain activity. (The machine tracked the flow of
oxygenated blood in their brains, which many scientists consider to be
an indicator of brain activity.)

Half the time, the participants had to figure out how to get to the
destination themselves, by pushing buttons when they got to an
intersection to say which way they wanted to turn. It was “very much as
if you were in the car with your partner driving, and they just keep
turning to you and asking which way do we go now?” Spiers says. “It
wasn’t relaxing.”

The other half of the time, the same participants had a much easier
task. They were simply told which way to turn at each intersection, much
like following commands on Google Waze or a GPS unit on the dashboard.

What the investigators found was clear. When participants had to do the
hard mental work of figuring out which way to turn, the researchers saw
more activity in the subjects’ hippocampus—a part of the brain
associated with memory and spatial navigation. Not only that, there was
a direct connection between the amount of brain activity and how many
connections (and thus route options) the street at hand had with other
roads. In short, the more complex the street, the more activity in that
part of the brain.

The result was like a “rollercoaster of hippocampal activity depending
on the street network,” Spiers says.

But that wasn’t the case in the scenario that simulated using GPS. In
fact, the relationship between brain activity and street complexity was
totally “abolished,” Spiers says, when people were just following
directions.

They recently published their findings
 in the journal Nature
Communications. Past research has pointed towards similar results: taxi
drivers learning London’s thousands of streets actually gained grey
matter in their hippocampi
.

Spiers points out that in an era where getting turn-by-turn directions
is as easy as looking at a smartphone, something may be lost—just like
how a muscle you don’t use atrophies. People using a navigation service
to tell them where to go aren’t stimulating their hippocampus, he says.
“And that might well not be good for you,” he adds. “It might be better
to actually give your brain a bit more of a workout.”

Of course, there are obvious benefits to GPS navigation, including a
considerable reduction in stress, but Spiers hopes to find a balance
between making navigation easy and teaching us about the environment
through which we’re moving. He adds: “I’m hoping in the future we’ll
start making technology that more empowers us.”

Oh, and I should add that I would probably go with a front seat to start
things off with an infant and move to the trailer around two. Again, it all
depends on the type of riding you want to do. She loved the trailer right
when we started using it (around 1?) and would still love it if I hadn't
sold it. Bad move!

[RBW] Re: Make me a baby Mtn. step-thru

2018-02-23 Thread Bob K.
I have tried several scenarios for kid hauling:

1. Thule Ridealong: This is a rear seat that attaches to the seat tube.
Easy to remove, but the ugly attachment/base stays on the seat tube when
the seat is removed unless you want to take the time to remove it, too. The
design gives the seat a bit of suspension. I found this to be awesome in
normal road/town riding, but the suspension was a bit much when on a rail
trail or fire road. If town riding is generally what you'll be doing, and
you want a rear seat, you could certainly do worse than the Ridealong.

2. Cougar Chariot (2): I got the two-seater so I could put some other stuff
in there along with my daughter. She loved this trailer, and quite frankly,
I don't know why I sold it. I do know that I couldn't use it on the C
towpath (double track) because of its wheelbase, so I sold it for a
single-wheeled trailer.

3. Frances Farfarer: After strongly considering the Weehoo, I went with the
Farfarer because it's just over 1/3 of the weight. I also liked that it was
made by a framebuilder in CA. He lives in Santa Cruz, and has documented
the trailer's use with his daughter. It's incredibly lightweight (9-ish
pounds?) and is a really well-designed trailer. Unfortunately, even my
rather tall daughter tends to sink down into the trailer. She doesn't seem
to like it nearly as much as the erstwhile Chariot. We also didn't end up
doing the C tour last year, so I'm considering unloading the Farfarer for
a Weehoo or giving it another try since she's a year older (and bigger).
I'm on the fence about keeping this trailer in general because it is super
versatile, but with its resale value just south of $500, it's pretty tough
to justify keeping it around if I'm not using it regularly.

Overall, the Weehoo seems pretty ideal, and if I knew what I know now,
that's where I would've gone for #3. I do think the fully-covered trailers
are a great option if the roads where you live are wide enough that you're
not concerned about drivers giving you enough space. I also would highly
recommend going with the double. It's not that much wider, and it gives you
a ton of extra space for stuffed animals, snacks, groceries, etc.

First, I did not introduce an irrelevant political topic, at least not any
more than a discussion of say AAA's opposition to bike lanes might be
considered outside the bounds of this group. Second, I did not explicitly
ask anyone to accept my political position, or for that matter did I even
state it. I simply offered information to be considered. Third, my
posting title may have lead some to jump to false assumptions if they were
only considering their own safety. Finally, yes, one can construct an
argument that my post was outside the bounds of this lists, but one would
then have to also exclude everything GP has written about helmets and
clothes. I can remember many lengthy threads on this list about diets,
about which we do not agree, and have nothing to do with RBW, other than
GPs espousal. I am not asking for a discussion, I simply inform you where
your money goes when you buy Bell or Giro helmets.

"Your bike could be impounded" should be added to those signs.

I remember a cyclist who twice did not honor no tresspassing signs and once
he was detained by cops and fined after quite a wait. I was thinking that I

They probably would have thrown it on top of the heap of other bikes they
keep in their yard. Many scratches and bent derailer and dented tubes
later...

[RBW] FS/FT: 1985 Trek 870 MTB

2018-02-23 Thread Drw

Sort of a sad day, but i have a kid almost here and a roscoe bubbe mtn
coming that will make a way better kid hauler. So I'm offering up for sale
my beloved Trek 870. It's the top of the line model from 1985. I got into
bikes by getting into vintage treks and this one was a model i had my eye
out for for many years. I eventually found it as a 30$ frame that i bought
out of someone's trunk, had it powdercoated and got the original decals and
stuff for it.

It's the 22in model. I'm 5'10 with an 86pbh and it fits me great. Tange
prestige tubing. Huge tire clearances (has 2.2 tires on it right now with
lots of room leftover). HERE
 is the catalog
with all the info/geo.

Wheels are used but in good shape. Newish halo twin rail tires. New headset
and bb. Crank is now a xd2 triple. Newish deore rear der.. seatpost and
front der. are vintage/nothing special. has a brooks flyer on it now. i put
a rear brake support thing on it because i had one lying around. 90's era
shimano canti's.

Full disclosure: it has a few very small and shallow dings that happened
during shipment back from painting. these are on the top tube and one on
the seatstay, and are purely cosmetic. they are near impossible to see
unless up close staring down the length of the tube. Hard enough to see
that i couldn't get the painter to acknowledge them in photographs when i
was complaining. Ill do my best to photograph them, if you are interested.

I'm looking to sell it as :

*-Frame/fork/wheels/tires/seatpost/brakes-300$+shipping*

or

*-Frame/fork/wheels/tires/crankset/derailleurs/seatpost/brakes/brooks flyer
saddle in honey-450$+shipping*

(i'm not including rack, pedals, cockpit or bag)

If you are in southern california, we can avoid shipping.

i'm sentimental about it and I mainly just want it to go to home where
someone will appreciate what it is and enjoy it without destroying it.

open to partial trades for the following things

-nice, newer cantilever or v-brake set

-650b tires. 50mm or larger. G-one speed ideally.

-long cage clutch rear derailler in VGC

-interesting 1x cranks. square taper, 170-172mm arms.

[RBW] Re: Roadini: potential for 650B on 700C frame sizes?

2018-02-23 Thread Michael Doleman
Yeah, this is more or less my thinking as well, but just wanted to kinda
double-check on it to know what I'm up against.

I put enough dings and dents into my 10-year-old Sam Hillborne that I'm
ready to move on to something else. Initially I'd thought just get another
Sam, but I'm looking at the Roadini and it really looks exactly like the
road bike of my dreams. So I am considering it carefully (in part because
it's a lot cheaper than a new Sam). I would, likely, eventually get a
second bike, something more trail/dirt oriented. But I also like to be able
to have the option for taking any bike I ride onto rougher terrain if/when
desired.

Anyway, looking at all the options. And it looks like now is the time to
get while the gettin's good, so to speak, given that latest missive about
cash flow problems. I know it's going to be one of the two frames, so I
went ahead and bought $300 in gift cards, toward the "hail mary" effort.
Hope it helps. Fingers crossed.

sizes. I assume most of the models are selling well but I am guessing slight
changes in demand can have big cash flow implications. I also don’t know what
the profit margin is and with the price increases, maybe the margins decreased
as well.

Re: [RBW] Roadini: potential for 650B on 700C frame sizes?

2018-02-23 Thread Tim Gavin
622 - 584 = 38
38 / 2 = 19

You need 19 mm more reach from 700c to 650b. Even assuming ~50 mm current
reach (you said the stock setup has the pads halfway), it sounds like Paul
Racers wouldn't provide enough reach; you'd need DC/Weinmann-style
centerpulls.

I converted my '97 Riv Road Standard to 650b, because it couldn't even fit
a 700 x 28 tire in the rear. Chainstay and fork leg width constrains me to
a 650 x 38 tire max.

Personally, I'd stick with 700c wheels on a Roadini. Aka, buy a different
bike if you want wider tires. I bought my Riv used, locally, and have been
adapting it since.

[RBW] Roadini: potential for 650B on 700C frame sizes?

2018-02-23 Thread Joe Bernard
My super-not-educated thoughts are that 650B conversions are easier for 700C
bikes that start with short-reach brakes and a high-ish BB. Roadini has neither
so I'm thinking you'll encounter more debits than benefits with this project.

[RBW] Roadini: potential for 650B on 700C frame sizes?

2018-02-23 Thread Michael Doleman
I'm considering the purchase of a Roadini frame, and am wondering if
perhaps it'd be just possible to use 650B wheels on one of the frames
intended for 700C -- for the purpose of being able to run wider tires,
if/when desired.

The site says that 57mm reach is necessary, and in the pictures, so far as
I can tell, it looks like they have Shimano Tiagra 57mm-max-reach brakes,
with the pads seemingly set about halfway to the bottom. Working that out
in my head, it would seem that by using something such as the Paul Racer
centerpull, with a reach of 67mm, it might be just possible to make it
happen. There are options for brakes with reach up to 73mm, of course, but
those are not as high-quality and I'd like to avoid having to change-out
the brakes to run a different wheel. Aside from the brake reach, though, is
the other question as to whether the width of -- say -- a 40 or 45mm tire
will fit. Height wouldn't be a problem, but width might be -- chainline,
derailleur, etc.

Anyone have any input on these factors? I'd appreciate it.

[RBW] Re: Make me a baby Mtn. step-thru

2018-02-23 Thread Ruben Flores
my two cents (because that is all I have left having recently gone down
this path). Rear seat fits for a much longer time than a stem mounted
style. I found the Yepp the outstanding choice (having had a couple of both
kids and seats). We used the seat tube mounted model, clamped like a vise,
felt like you could carry twice the stated limit and the mounting point
lowered the center of gravity a bit.

Mandatory in my book is a double kickstand

Surly single chainrings are pretty good and come in many different sizes.

as far as something my wife "invented" she took a piece of elastic tied
around her waist, attached half a dozen toys to it, so with Everly on the
Yepp the toys were right at eye and hand level.

one more tip, try and get the gearing so low that rider will never stand,
when you stand (my wife is a masher) the bike jumps forward almost
inpercievably but when you are riding next to the baby seat you can her
helmet lurching back and forth.

Dave S is the GM at Riv. I emailed Dave after I screwed up and generated a
bunch of $10 gift cards when I'd rather have one big one. Dave arranged to
consolidate my many credits into one for me. While I "had his ear", I
asked how HailMary was going, and he said "better than expected". I told
him that I could potentially help additionally if it was necessary, and he
thanked me for that, but said it was not at the moment.

So, if you are well-heeled and want to loan Rivendell $10k - $50k at lower
interest than a line of credit, reach out to Dave. Maybe they'd want it,
but my guess is they won't. If you don't want to enter that kind of
arrangement with Rivendell Bicycle Works, then buying things they have in
stock and buying store credit are the best two things you can do. Giving
away those $10 gift certs to your friends, triggering them to spend $100
each would be even better.

I've been happy with the Yepp seats. We started with a Yepp mini in the

getting the Yepp specific rack with the Easyfit window. The rack itself is
a monster, but that's exactly what I wanted in a rack that was supporting
my son. The Easyfit window is wonderful and very secure.
I ordered the rear seat and rack from Holland Bike Shop. It was fun to poke
around their webstore too. Lots of options for child seats.
The rack I ordered is a Steco Power Safety carrier.

2018-02-23 Thread William!
If you are looking for something that *automatically* tracks your rides
(great for trips around town), check out Ride Report .
And in case you are wondering, yes you will earn a virtual trophy if you
ride to Rivendell HQ and/or Rivelo with the app installed.

(disclosure: I work on Ride Report 邏)

[RBW] Re: Nitto Kite bar?

2018-02-23 Thread Jeremy Tavan
I have one currently mounted on the tandem, which has gotten almost no use
since build, so I can't give anything more than a vague positive impression
of it. It's a bit like an Albatross but not quite as steeply swept back,
resulting in a wider bar, as you pointed out. It's very similar to a Surly
Open Bar, and if I were interested in this kind of bar I'd look hard at the
Surly rather than importing something so similar from Japan. I definitely
find the albatross more swept-back than I like, so these bars fill a useful
niche.

[RBW] Re: Riv request for store credits

2018-02-23 Thread 'mlpessar' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've been a little reluctant to post but it seems folks are interested in
the response to Grant's email. I bought a fist full shortly after the email
appeared. I plan on giving certificates to people I know who might be
interested in what Riv has to offer. My hope is that by doing so the
customer base will grow.
Can't help but feel that the my world would be a poorer place without RBW
in it. If that sounds over-stated, hey so be it. I know I'm preaching
directly to the choir by posting here but I will say that if you value an
enterprise you should strongly consider supporting it.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for GPS computers?

2018-02-23 Thread Ryan Merrill
I went through a time of using varuiys cateye wired computers, then to a
Garmin 500, a Garmin 1000 explore and now I use a Garmin fenix watch. The
garmins are nice because you don't have to clutter your bike up with a
bunch of sensors and they seem to really work well. I've had no issues out
of them; heck, my wife is using the 500 now. I think I have a few cateyes
in drawers throughout the house.

I like the watch the best because I always have it with me and I can use it
when I race cyclocross without fearing losing the garmin on the course (I
crash a lot). I got my Garmin 1000 explore up for sale (if anybody wants it
just give me a holler).
