Re: [RBW] Do you ever find yourself tempted by brifters?

2015-12-10 Thread Jim Bronson
With the bar ends, it's more a function of sweat dripping off other
parts of my body since they are closer to the rider. It seems to go
from my chin right on to the bar-ends fairly frequently. With
brifters, the mechanism is much farther forwards so they seem to get
less sweat. They do get the sweat off of your hands and arms, but
none of the sweat off of your torso.

Re: [RBW] Re: Do you ever find yourself tempted by brifters?

2015-12-10 Thread Jim Bronson
When I used brifters more often, I did simultaneous shifts all the
time, especially when transitioning from the big ring to the middle
ring. I'd hit the button on both brifters to go to a smaller ring on
both front and back, and it would be a perfect transition every time.
Well ok one time I dropped my chain, but that was the only time I can
ever remember that happening and I'd done a similar shift hundreds if
not thousands of times.

Now, the remnants of my go-fast bike are in spare parts boxes in my garage.

I think the reason i use "brifter" is because I'm too lazy to type out

I find myself re-thinking my allegiance to bar-ends, because I sweat

them up fairly regularly.

Then something like this comes up.

I dunno about that. Maybe it's not possible to overthink gearing, but it's
possible to spend too much time thinking about the gearing on your bike

It's a guilty pleasure to obsess over your bicycle configuration, one that

Re: [RBW] Re: thinking about going 11 speed, does anyone make a 12-32?

2015-12-04 Thread Jim Bronson
Been thinking about this some more. One think about 11 speed that
I've noticed is that some sites claim that the cable pull is not the
same ratio throughout the travel. Which makes me wonder if certain
shifters have to be paired with certain rear derailers. I run the
Microshift bar-ends now, and would like to continue using them, but
with the uncertainty around cable pull, would they mix with a Shimano
derailer? I dunno, maybe should stick with 10 speed, that makes
things a lot less complicated. I know in that case I would only need
to change the shifter, cassette and chain to switch to 10 speed. That
seems a bit more appealing, on second guess.

The other thing is, how to best achieve the gears I want. It's easier
to run a slightly narrower cassette if you accept having a bigger jump
on your wide-low double. Maybe I should just give up having a 32 or
34 in the back, and just run a smaller bailout gear. The end goal is
to keep my lowest gear inches and highest gear inches around where
they are now, but bridge some of the gaps in the middle.

I can get a Miche 12-29 10 speed, which has the ratios
12-13-14-15-17-19-21-23-26-29 and also a loose 16 and a loose 24, from
XXCycle. for $59.53 shipped. Removing the 23 and 26, and inserting
the 16 between the 15 and 17, and the 24 between the 21 and 29, gives
one 12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-24-29.

With 44/24 the aforementioned modified ratios get you:
95.3 52.0
88.0 48.0
81.7 44.6
76.3 41.6
71.5 39.0
67.3 36.7
60.2 32.8
54.5 29.7
47.7 26.0
39.4 21.5

Current top gear with 44/28 and 11-34 in back is 104.0". Current
lowest gear is 21.4. So I give up a little top end, and the bottom
end is almost identical. I do use the 104" gear pretty often on road
rides but maybe I just need to work on my coasting technique and
forget about it.

Why do I obsess about this stuff for months before spending a
relatively small amount of money? It's a curse.

Could you run Noodles with a shim with this stem?

The front face opening would be convenient for packing up the bike.

Re: [RBW] Re: Eleven speeds on a ten-speed hub

2015-12-01 Thread Jim Bronson
For me the 11 speed is about combining the features of a wide range
cassette with a narrow range cassette. I frequently find myself
hunting for just the right gear and with 11-34 9 speed currently I
think the steps are a bit bigger than I would like.

I still want a fairly large cog in the back, but I also want close
spacing in the cruising speed ranges that I normally ride in - mid to
upper teens. To me an 11 speed cassette is one way to solve that.

I've never felt like I've had too many gears with 9 speed and felt
like I wanted to step back to 7 speed. Since we ride Rivendells that
are something of a throwback, I can appreciate the sentiment for less
gears, less complexity and nostalgia for older parts that worked well.
But there's nothing wrong with trying something newer either, so long
as it's economical, reliable and useful in operation. 11 speed prices
have fallen into the range of affordability, they seem to be as
reliable as anything else, and if they produce the desired effect,
then why not? You don't have to join me if you're happy with what
you've got. To each his/her own. Just Ride.

Re: [RBW] Re: Eleven speeds on a ten-speed hub

2015-11-30 Thread Jim Bronson
Cool idea, but too expensive if you use normal, practical wheels. At
$250 per cassette it would make more sense to me to just have another
wheel built that was 11 speed compatible, and just use SRAM 1130 or
Shimano 105 cassettes. The new wheel will have paid for itself by the
time you put your 2nd cassette on. Even if you used an expensive
boutique hub on your new wheel like a Phil, the new wheel would pay
for itself by the 3rd cassette.

Now, if customer XYZ already uses silly expensive wheels, or
cassettes, or both, then this idea starts to make a lot more sense.
If I had a $2000 Zipp wheelset, wanted 11 speed, and used D/A, or Red
cassettes, then this makes a lot of sense.

Re: [RBW] Re: thinking about going 11 speed, does anyone make a 12-32?

2015-11-25 Thread Jim Bronson
Ted,

I got pretty excited when I saw your post

The 11-32 as you depict with 43/26 rings just about perfect replicates
the 46/26 with my preferred spacing with close to 100 on the top end
and around 21 on the low end.

However, none of the SRAM cassettes I saw online include the 14 cog :(

I just want an 11 speed casette that ends in 32 that has 1 tooth jumps
in the highest 5 gears and I will adjust my big ring accordingly. Is
it really so hard? *sniff*.

Re: [RBW] Re: thinking about going 11 speed, does anyone make a 12-32?

2015-11-20 Thread Jim Bronson
That's a pretty good idea and I have bought from Xxcycle before, it
takes a long time to get here but I was ultimately happy with my
purchase.

One thing I noticed that may be available stateside is, if you could
just split two 105 5800s in half it would be about perfect. The 12-25
runs 12-16 in one tooth increments, so the first 5 gears from the
12-25 and then then you could have the lower 6 gears from the 11-32,
that would be excellent.

12-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21-23-25
11-12-13-14-16-18-20-22-25-28-32

I've seen the 105 5800s for sale online for around $45 each. That's
probably more economical than the IRD cassettes, although $90 is still
pretty expensive compared to the $25 I usually spend for 9 speed
11-34's. I guess the cost of progress is high sometimes. I do get
quite a bit of mileage out of my cassettes, so, I'd probably only have
to endure the pain once every couple of years or so.

Maybe an alternate plan would be to just buy a loose 15 and remove the
11 from the 11-32, if that's possible.

[RBW] thinking about going 11 speed, does anyone make a 12-32?

2015-11-19 Thread Jim Bronson
So I've got the rims lurking around my garage for a new wheelset. I'm
not super happy with the Soma Weymouth 650b rims that are on my custom
currently, so, eventually I'm going to get around to building a new
set. One of the nice things about building a new wheelset is that you
get to pick your hubs. I will re-use my SON Deluxe from the front,
but probably not the Deore from the back. Being that I get to pick a
new rear hub, well, I'm thinking I might like to go 11 speed. I mean
11 is down to the 105 level now and will probably be at the Tiagra
level sometime this year or next year. So, it's getting down to the
point that it's not really much more expensive than similar quality
parts as in a 9 or 10 speed setup. Why 11 in particular? Well, read
on.

I'm really liking running a wide-low double on my Custom but I'm
thinking that I would like to jam a couple of more gears in to get
more ratios in the 13-18 mph range that I ride most often in. I run
11-34 9 speed right now, with 44/28 in the front. Some of the gaps
between gears are just wider than I would like. More gears in the
cassette would seem to solve this.

Of course, one might argue that, a better solution would be to just
run a triple with a narrower cassette and you get all the benefits of
more gears in the range that you ride in. However, for whatever
reason, triples on my custom have never really shifted well. Either
the granny, or the big ring, or both, overshift or undershift and it's
just never quite right. It seems much happier with the wide-low
double, never gives me any trouble at all. So I'd like to keep a wide
low double, because this is the frame I want to keep riding most of
the time. Although I would like to go a bit wider between the big
ring and the little ring, I really use it like a 1x9 with a bailout
gear anyway. So I was thinking maybe 46/26 up front and 12-32 in the
back.

And not just any 12-32. I'm looking for
12-13-14-15-16-18-20-22-25-28-32. This yields the following ratios in
the big ring per Sheldon: 99.7 - 92.0 - 85.4 - 79.7 - 74.8 - 66.4 -
59.8 - 54.4 - 47.8 - 42.7 - 37.4. 13-32 or 13-34 might be even
better, of course, nobody will ever make that.

Another solution might just be to pedal harder and forget about any of this.

Or, just switch my main bike to the Redwood, it seems to shift the
triple just fine,and I currently have an 11-28 9 speed with a 46-36-24
Rivendell issue Sugino triple. But I don't have fenders on the
Redwood and I kind of like it that way as a sunny day bike and with
700C Barlow Pass, it's a nice change of pace the way it is. I could
go 650B and fenders as on the Custom but it feels so natural and
nimble the way it is so I sort of want to keep it that way.

So back to the 11 on the custom. Even Rivendell themselves built a
1x11 prototype recently, didn't they?

well anyway just musing.

Shimano HG61 11-34 9 speed cassette, Microshift bar-ends and whatever 9

quality is very good. Well so long as I keep the cables and bar-ends

Re: [RBW] touring hub and brake lever recommendation

Older Deore XT with cro-mo axles is a solid choice. Reliable, polished
silver, easy to service.

The M780 Deore XT hub that I have has an aluminum axle, I would prefer the
cro-mo. But on the other hand it cost $53 shipped and it's been a rock
solid reliable hub for me. Besides the aluminum axle issue it's also matte
silver which is not so pretty. Sometimes function wins over form though ;)

Re: [RBW] FS Microshift 10 speed bar end shifters (mtb version), pearl izumi neoprene shoe covers

2015-10-08 Thread Jim Bronson
Yes. T-610 appears to be Deore "Trekking" with Dynasys, 10 speed.

Shimano doesn't really market the Trekking groups in the USA, shame.

What are you asking for the bar-ends? I'm interested because the ratios on
10 speed for 11-34 look a bit nicer in the middle where I use them - 9
speed has 2 tooth jumps only to 17, whereas 10 speed has them to 23, in
Shimano cassettes anyway, Sram seems to be different.

9: 11,13,15,*17,20,23,26*,30,34
10: 11-13-15-*17-19-21-23-26*-30-34 (This looks more usable to me in where
I do most of my riding)

Re: [RBW] Laid off and in a Quandary

2015-10-05 Thread Jim Bronson
I've been driving Lyft and Uber on the side to make extra money due to life
circumstances. I have a fully paid off and pretty much completely
depreciated vehicle so depreciation is not a major hit. It's nice side
money for about 30-35 hours a week if you're not killing yourself/the
profits with depreciation on a new car. Much better pay than unemployment,
for sure. Straight 1099, they don't deduct taxes or anything.

The biggest downside is that your riding will suffer if you end up working
2 jobs as I am now. I've gone from a 5-7 days a week rider to maybe 1-2.
Of course I always take out my custom Riv when I do get to ride. :)

Wow that's terrible. Sorry to hear of it. That could be really dangerous
going downhill fast. your derailer could be wrapped around the cassette in
a hurry.

I have one of those XT-780 hubs also, and it has been rock solid, go figure
I've done about 12,000Ks of rando rides on it in the last 3 years. Now
I'm worried, but maybe it's one of those things if it doesn't break right
off the bat, it's good for a long time. I hope so.

Another thing I have heard about these hubs is that the axle is aluminum
and the threads tend to strip when you try to break it down to grease the
bearings. I have not actually tried this, but it's probably overdue for a
service so we'll see what happens.

Re: [RBW] Next Bomba Tire

2015-08-30 Thread Jim Bronson
I love Jan's tires but wow $168 is pretty breathtaking.

The 4 tires on my car cost $330 out the door with mounting, balancing, tax
and road hazard warranty. So about the same per tire, but I'm pretty sure
Compass expects you to mount and balance your own tires, and no road hazard
warranty is implied. The UTQG of the car tires is 420-A-B and I expect
them to last 40,000 miles or so. They balanced well and are smooth at
speeds up to 95 mph or so. Don't find a need to go faster than that,
actually going 95 was inadvertent in the first place, but anyhoo

Maybe I should get the new(er) Pari-Motos instead...supposedly the tread is
thicker than the older ones. Wire bead, but beggars can't be choosers...

Since I got excellent advice on my XO-3 tire questions last week I'll put
a slightly different one up today regarding the Bombadil... I'm already
pretty sure what I am looking for and am just caught in some paralysis by
analysis and/or sticker shock. Primary purpose for this tire set would be
to augment the 2.25 Nobby Nic's which are awesome offroad but to noisy
on-road. So the Bomba isn't getting any commuting use w/ the current
 tires.  The candidates;

 1. Compass Switchback Pass 650bx48mm; Reg or EL ($63/$84) That isn't a
typo, the EL 48's cost $12 more a pair than the EL 42's do... I guess b/c
they are tubeless compatible. $168 for a set of (i'm sure) amazing
 tires $168.

 2. BG Rock-n-Road 650Bx43mm ($57) I've been wanting to check these out
for a while, even had considered them for the Saluki before settling in on
the 38mm Parimoto's instead. I'm already rocking the BG Canti's on the
Bombadil so it almost seems right. I'm a little worried about road noise
but many people report that isn't an issue. Seems like a perfect CO and
when needed singletrack option to complement a great paved trail option.

 3. Big Ben 650Bx50mm Active/Performance ($25/50) I've ridden the Little
Big Ben's and Big Apples and enjoy them both, not sure I've personally
sampled the 'active' line so I'm not sure how much you give up (other than
half the price) w/ the heavier rubber compound. Seems like an awesome
Bombadil tire as it fits the clearances pretty much spot on.

 4. Panaracer Quasi Moto 650Bx2.0 ($35 on amazon!) I was considering this
more before getting the Nobby Nic's as it seems more offroad focused than
my previous three options... it remains in consideration primarily becuase
it's got a great price tag and it was one of the original 650B offerings
that fits the horizontal TT Bomba's clearances perfectly.

I had already reconciled the cost of a new set of Compass tires before the
switchback pass came out even (a little bit) higher and put me back into
consideration mode. No one (including me) seems disappointed with their
investments in light-supple-hi volume tires but man I am feeling the
 sticker shock.

Pretty awesome to have so many good options in so many different tire
 sizes!!

Curious what the credit card company's reason was, I guess PayPal did not

 Hi Bill,

who can buy and sell. I'd like to take this opportunity to share an
experience I had recently not bike related but selling on eBay and
 receiving funds through PayPal.

I sold a Sony a6000 digital camera on eBay in May. The day the auction
closed through eBay communication the buyer asked me to send the camera to
an address they supplied. I waited for the funds to show up in my PayPal
account. They did but were pending as un-verified buyer after three days
it was changed to just pending I figured this normal as I needed to ship
the item then the funds would be released. I printed out a shipping label
and went to my local USPS they couldn't find the address? They said maybe
it's a new development and not showing yet in our records? Here's my
biggest error in this entire process! At this point I recalled that the
buyer had given me a different address. So I promptly went home and
retrieved the address and mailed it out. What I should have done was
contact the buyer and ask questions which would have, should have thrown up
a reg flag. I should have cancelled the sale. But alas I was happy it sold
and felt under pressure to be a prompt seller to maintain good eBay seller
feedback. So with the auction closed and the payment made through PayPal.
All seemed good to go! Approximately 25 days later I received
correspondence from PayPal that the buyer opened a dispute with their
credit card company claiming they didn't authorize the purchase!

Here's where if you've ever watched the movie Brazil you can appreciate
the morass I fell into. Since the transaction was a completed transaction
eBay washed their hands of it and referred me to PayPal. I lost count how
many times I called PayPal's customer service, hung up the phone left with
a level of frustration I've never felt before, they have( I figure
purposely) the most incompetent people at this point. Here's what I
 garnered from all those conversations.

 1. Don't worry if the credit card companies found in favor of the buyers
then no one would do business with the CC companies.
 2. A dispute like this can take up to 75 days.
 3. They PayPal gave the CC company the incorrect tracking number. So the
CC company obviously figured I was a scammer.
 4. We will give all the information you gave us to the CC company.
Basically, they PayPal are your advocate at this point between you and the
buyers CC company. Shaky at best.
 5. Since you didn't ship to the buyer's address we have on file all PayPal
 seller protections are void.

I finally received an email from PayPal that the CC company decided in
favor of the Buyer. At this point my PayPal account shows a negative
balance of $880 $20 of that is a charge back fee from PayPal. Next up I
started getting calls from PayPal! The person on the other end of this
conversation was clearly competent. From that conversation I was told that
seven days after a chargeback PayPal requires you settle your account with
them and if you don't your account will be sent to a collections agency. At
this point you may ask well you've got options. Right?

Since eBay discards all records of transactions after 60 days I can't
communicate with the buyer through them. Back in early June when this all
happened I did send a eBay email to the buyer asking how we can resolve
this, no reply. The email that PayPal has on file for the buyer is bogus.
Both eBay and PayPal won't give any information about the buyer for privacy
reasons. That competent PayPal representative said, oh a lawyer can help
you get access to the buyer's records. I contacted my local police and the
detective said we can't help you this is a civil case and PayPal is the
 victim.

Very important here is the PayPal user agreement. It states that you are
responsible for any and all chargebacks period. In researching my options
I found there are numerous scams perpetrated on the eBay platform and it's
not necessarily a safe place to sell or buy things. Other sellers a lot
more experienced than I have fallen victim to scams/thefts for way more
money. In fact those merchants doing business on eBay received
correspondence from eBay and PayPal claiming

  Hi Bill,

Like others I've bought many items from this group. I haven't sold too
much though. My experiences have all been top notch. With that said I will
like the Jim our moderator caution you that you make transactions at your
own risk. This is a searchable forum and there is very little vetting as to
who can buy and sell.

Here's where if you've ever watched the movie Brazil you can
appreciate the morass I fell into. Since the transaction was a completed
transaction eBay washed their hands of it and referred me to PayPal. I lost
count how many times I called PayPal's customer service, hung up the phone
left with a level of frustration I've never felt before, they have( I
figure purposely) the most incompetent people at this point. Here's what I
 garnered from all those conversations.

  1. Don't worry if the credit card companies found in favor of the
buyers then no one would do business with the CC companies.
  2. A dispute like this can take up to 75 days.
  3. They PayPal gave the CC company the incorrect tracking number. So
the CC company obviously figured I was a scammer.
  4. We will give all the information you gave us to the CC company.
Basically, they PayPal are your advocate at this point between you and the
buyers CC company. Shaky at best.
  5. Since you didn't ship to the buyer's address we have on file all
 PayPal seller protections are void.

I finally received an email from PayPal that the CC company decided in
 favor

I like to go where the mass market is, because it's where there's the
highest efficiency of scale and least expensive parts. For me at the
moment, that means 9 speed. 8 speed is not any less expensive, so I'll
take the higher cog count. 7 speed is rarer these days, and rare doesn't
meet my criteria.

When I can buy 10 speed stuff at the same price as 9 speed, I'll probably
go that route when it becomes time to replace the shifters. Until then
sticking with 9 speed. It works fine.

I will be using them again for future bike shipments.
One of the packages was a wheelset.

This gets me to wondering, does it have to be a bike or bike part to ship
 via Bike Flights.

 1 package from Compass with an early pair of the new Elk Pass;

1 Tonyon lock as blogged by Dave Moulton.

The tires -- what can I say? Made by Panracer, but paper thin -- they make
the Parigi Roubaix look like thick cardboard.

One hundred and seventy grams with rubber band on my Pelouze! Six ethereal
 ounces!

Tomorrow, God willing, I will pick up the (Riv content '99 Joe gofast)
wheels that I had rebuilt from 650C -- I paid the $35 rush fee for 2 day
delivery. Hell, I should have tried to build them myself, except it would
have taken longer to get the Revolutions -- yes, with alloy nipples. (This
will be a super super super light wheelset; no dish to compromise things.

The tires will ineluctably require sealant, but that's no big deal when
they are fully 14 grams lighter even than 650C X 23 Michelin PR 4s. The
re-used, cleaned up 559 Sun M14A rims weigh ~380 compared to the very
 similar but eyeletted 650C ME14As' 425 grams. That's a 60 gram/2 oz weight
saving over an already very light wheel; and this promises much better
comfort and much less anxiety about our common 4+ pavement expansion
 cracks.

The Tonyon lock weighs 1 3/4 lb and has not the appearance, at least, of
Kryptonite's quality, but for the price it's worth a try. It is certainly
 compact.

Hopefully I'll get at least a quick ride on the Elks tomorrow; having been
riding Pro Race 3s on the gofast, I will be very eager to learn the
 difference with the Elks.

That is incredibly well-preserved. That being said there's other things
I'd rather ride, as Patrick noted. The nostalgia of a Raleigh doesn't
really do much for me. I'd rather have an old French constructeur bike,
but I doubt any were ever made in my size.

What would move my nostalgia meter and is available somewhere would be an
old green Varsity with the original fenders, my dad had one and used to
ride it to work when I was in elementary school in Corvallis, Oregon. He
sold it before I was big enough to ride it. I don't know what the biggest
size they sold was but it was huge, or at least it seemed so at the time.
I ended up 2 inches taller than my dad, so the bikes I have now are
probably even bigger.

If Rich says they are nice then I trust they are nice, but many in this
group will hear alloy drive shell and will steer clear. It's a fact. I'd
probably give them a shot, but if Riv had asked me to spec their Silver
rear hub, I would have advised a steel driveshell for this reason. One
less thing to have to talk about. The gram savings mean nothing in the
context of a Rivendell. Maybe this particular alloy driveshell is just as
rugged, or close enough, but maybe it's not. Steel would not have been
less rugged, and would have been heavier. The handwringers will wring
hands more over alloy than they would have over the heavier weight.

[RBW] sheared off crank bolt

2015-08-06 Thread Jim Bronson
On a recent trail ride with my Redwood, I decided to stand and pedal rather
than downshift. This had the most unfortunate consequence of the crank
bolt shearing inside the bottom bracket. It also resulted in a nearly 6
mile walk back to the house.

My question is: can the rest of the bolt be extracted and the bottom
bracket re-used? Or should I just forget it and get a new bottom bracket.
It's not an expensive BB, Shimano UN-54 or similar.

Renaissance Bicycles in Henderson, NC (a Riv dealer of sorts) when he

Included in the sale is the Tange headset (just cleaned and greased),
Shimano BB, and a new - still in package - Kalloy Uno SP-248 seat post. No
dings or dents and all paint chips were minor, mainly on the drive side
chain stay, but are expertly touched up. Decals are perfect and the frame
is treated with framesaver. Standover is 83.4cm and the (theoretical
 horizontal) TT is 59cm.

Re: [RBW] Re: How do I tell if I need a spacer for a 7speed cassette?

2015-08-04 Thread Jim Bronson
Maybe I've just never cared about these because I've never used a spacer,
always used 8 or 9 speed. And it's been quite a while since I used 8 speed

I have a MTB with 7 speed but I've never removed the cassette and frankly
I'm not sure if it's a freehub or freewheel.

In the first photo, the cassette is on the right. Three pins hold the
cogs together as a unit. That photo is the oldest revision, where the
three pins are threaded bolts. Many of us removed the bolts so we could
swap individual cogs around. Later revs came with rivets that are not so
easily removable. So a cassette spacer that enables you to run a 7-speed
cassette on a 10-speed freehub body would need to have three little
recesses for these bolt heads or rivet heads to nestle into. Here's an
 example of one:

Daniel,

The Elephant NFE is a low trail bike, meaning it is meant to have a load in
the front. Unloaded in the front, the steering will be somewhat light
depending on the exact amount of trail it has in millimeters. Jan Heine

(low) trail. 35mm trail is said to be best with a 5-10 lb weight in

Makes me wonder where randonneuring fits into all this. It's hard at
times, but we don't try to kill ourselves either and we usually ride at a
social pace that allows for conversation.

But still, 10 hour + rides are a frequent occurrence in the life of a
randonneur. If you keep a social pace is it just riding or are you
putting yourself in a danger zone just due to the sheer length of the thing.

Who knows...

 preliminary observations:

From what I had read, I was expecting a battle; but seating the tires was
actually quite easy. I didn't want water inside the tires, so I used no
soapy water or lubricant of any kind. I had an injector for the Orange Seal
sealant, so I added the sealant AFTER the tires were seated. In short, the
tires were seated while completely dry. Here is how I did it.

First, I seated the tires in the normal manner with an inner tube. Then I
broke ONE bead and removed the inner tube. I installed the tubeless tire
stem. Then I worked my way around the rim and pulled the loose bead outward
on the rim to seat it as best as I could. It wasn't fully seated of course,
but somewhat close. Then I just pumped the tire up and seated it, didn't
even remove the valve core (as some recommend for faster air flow) because
my pump fit the valve stem better with the core in. It was actually quite
easy to seat the tire with my floor pump! Full disclosure, I have the high
volume Lezyne Dirt Floor Drive Pump, but really I think any floor pump
would have worked. My daughter seated one of the tires and I seated the
other. Easy both times. I think the key is to have one bead completely on
and the second bead pulled in close like I did.

So far I'm quite satisfied with tubeless. My goal was to avoid having to
use a heavy commuter tire because I really love the ride of the Babyshoe
Pass EL's. I see no weight savings with tubeless and I don't care. If there
is a difference in performance I can't tell. I was already using Schwalbe
SV14 light (130 gram) inner tubes and the ride was sweet (when I didn't
flat). I'm interested only in flat protection because with all the goat
heads and other thorns around here flats were annoyingly common with tubes.
I probably used more Orange Seal than necessary, but we will see. I'll
probably carry two inner tubes and a patch kit as emergency backup, so
again...no weight savings. But if I don't get flats, it will be worth it. I
use my bike to commute to work. It is only 5 miles each direction, but I
get up early and extend my morning commute somewhere fun to get a 90 minute
or so morning ride. I don't want to be fixing a flat out in the boonies at
dawn before work. Been there, done that!

So hopefully tubeless will be the answer for me...time will tell.

For the past two weeks, my wife and I have been on a motorcycle trip out
west, hiking and camping in the Canadian Rockies. Many times as my feet
started to hurt or I was trudging down an endless downhill, I was wishing
for my bike. But my Atlantis was back home in a state of disrepair - the
rear phil hub had been constantly skipping pawls for the past six months
despite several complete rebuilds by my LBS with the guidance of Phil Wood
techs. On top of that, my nearly-new White Industries road crank arms were
mysteriously coming loose on a regular basis, as if they had been
improperly installed (though I have several pairs of these crank arms and
have used square taper forever, never had any problems before, installed
 according to supplied instructions).

When I got home I was so happy to see Phil Wood had sent me a brand new
hub, despite it being off warranty and despite the fact that my hub passed
every test they threw at it. It 'should' be perfectly fine they said, but I
was sent a shiny new hub anyway. Incredible!

Then I checked my email and saw that White Industries has also mailed me a
replacement pair of cranks, which should be arriving any day now. What a
 day!

To celebrate I popped on a spare rear wheel and rode out to my favourite
spot to watch a huge prairie thunderstorm rolling in. It felt great to be
back on the bike and I'm excited to rebuild the rear wheel with the new
hub. Very happy with the service I received from both companies.

Re: [RBW] Ram as 650 tourer, a follow up report.

Oops didn't finish my sentence. With the 650Bx38 LoupLoup non-extralight
I'm getting between 2000-3000 on rear tires and well I've only changed my
front tire once in a year and a half plus of running these, sorta lost
track because my speedometer battery died for a couple of months before I
replaced it. But I've gotten about 11,000 Rando K's in that time as well
as some of other puttering around riding I do and a few charity rides.

As always, YMMV

On Tue, Jul 14, 2015 at 11:13 PM, Jim Bronson jim.bron...@gmail.com wrote:

Just curious if this is a true apples to apples comparison. My custom

Soma Weymouth on Deore hubs. Probably gained at least half a pound in
wheel weight, plus the non-Ultralight LoupLoup Pass are heavier than the
Grand Bois 700x30(32) I was running before. So in my case I have not ever
made a true apples to apples comparison with similar wheel and tire
 weights.

Besides the cush factor, the Compass LoupLoup Pass also last way longer
than the Grand Bois did, I was only getting about 750 miles out of a rear

Others have reported little to no loss in performance after the switch.

It's worth pointing out that I am 6'4 with bikes that can accommodate

average or small size bikes seeing the advantage in converting a 700x28

Re: [RBW] Ram as 650 tourer, a follow up report.

2015-07-14 Thread Jim Bronson
Just curious if this is a true apples to apples comparison. My custom
feels maybe a slight bit more plodding, but, my 650b wheels are much
heavier than the 700c wheels I was running previously. I had Velocity
Fusion on Campy Chorus most recently before converting and now I'm running
Soma Weymouth on Deore hubs. Probably gained at least half a pound in
wheel weight, plus the non-Ultralight LoupLoup Pass are heavier than the
Grand Bois 700x30(32) I was running before. So in my case I have not ever
made a true apples to apples comparison with similar wheel and tire
weights.

Besides the cush factor, the Compass LoupLoup Pass also last way longer
than the Grand Bois did, I was only getting about 750 miles out of a rear
tire on the 700x30 but with the 650Bx38. And I do love the cush.

So for me, it's worth it. YMMV.

accelerate easily and the road feel is super comfy without being squishy.
I've been a recreational rider for over 35 yrs, but have not felt anything
like this before. This is a bike for my old agewait, whoops...already
 there.

RE the brakes: The slots on the Riv silver side pulls only required
minimal filing, I guess mine is not one with the high rear brake bridge.
Also, I changed the pads from rectangular block pads to the Koolstop
Thinlines, my favorite pads anyway. The braking surface is longer and not
quite as tall, so you gain maybe .5 mm. Still, I will be watching
 carefully as the pads wear.

My old wheels (Phil hubs 36 laced to Bontrager Fairlane asym rims, with
Compass 32's) weigh a ton in comparison. Are these known to be heavy
 wheels?

Can't speak to pedal strike yet, I don't pedal in the turns, or at least I
 won't now.

I strongly recommend this conversion if comfort is your main goal...also,
my fenders are on order. Thanks to all for the advice.

 Alan

MAIN DOWNSIDE: I may have to do this to my other road bike.

Hey, good one. For my 12.5K, I would get these three Rivs:

A custom Riv but with the build of an Atlantis, since the stock Atlantis
does not come in my size and I see that the used 68s are hard to come by,
for my upcoming world tour.

An AHH in 71 just because I can (make it work with a short-ish stem.) for
mixed terrain riding

An extra large Clem Jr (If they build it) for riding to work

Since I economized on the Clem, I would also get a custom tigged Boulder
for rando rides.

Yet another gushing, happy compass tire customer. (at the price it's a
good thing we're all delighted!) I threw the 700x38 non extra light
versions on my Burley Bossa Nova last week with the express purpose of
making the bike a comfortable CO Canal Towpath bike given my proximity.
Worked out great, the conversion from 27 1/4 to 700c was without drama and
my clearances still are excellent. Ill be adding some Berthoud steel
fenders next, I love how solid they are once mounted. The tires act very
similar to my EL Hetre's, they almost any pavement seem like fresh pavement
and they make hardpack/gravel trails feel like regular pavement (if not
better). Nice upgrade from the 32mm Gatorskins I was running.

My wife and I have enjoyed the tandem so much the past three weeks we've
been getting out more and more. Monday night in fact we got out for a
quick ride to Jones Point Park (under the VA side of the Woodrow Wilson
Bridge) and back and I nearly had a disaster when I clipped a parking
barrier with my non-drive side pedal. Luckily we were going slow but we
ended up on our feet out of the saddle. The bike didn't sound great on the
way home and Erika's handlebars were out of place but we got home in one
piece. As the picture below show's though that slow speed collision, my
weight (on the saddle) and her weight (on the handlebars) bent the Kalloy
seatpost in an instant! Good thing I had another.

I re-tuned the drivetrain, replaced the seatpost and it seems ok. We'll
have to get a test ride in over the weekend to make sure. Gotta keep the
tandem rolling at all costs now that it has captured both of our attention!

Love your pics. My dad was born and spent his early years right next door
in San Bernadino. It's an area I enjoy visiting.

That being said, I wouldn't shy away from evening riding. I find that I
like to force myself out of my comfort zone, and the more I do so, the more
comfortable I am in the extreme heat. Sun sleeves would also work really
well in your very dry climate.

This year for us in Texas, it's more the humidity than the heat though,
some days don't even get out of the 80s but the air is so thick you could
cut it with a knife. My sun sleeves are useless with this humidity, they
make me hotter than I would be otherwise.

To me this seems like a solution in search of a problem, at least for the
home mechanic. I've never had any issues adjusting calipers by hand, and I
make fine adjustments with the barrel adjuster.

Now if you work in a shop, I'm sure the speed and precision afforded by it
will make you extra money as you will be able to complete more work in the
same time. For my garage though it's not worth $30 to me.
