I will never crimp on anything over 10 Ft above the Ground , I have been
soldering Connectors for over 40 Years But I had read how nice and
convenient it was just to buy some Good Crimp on tools , Dies , Coax
Cutters Etc. I spent about $ 200.00

Put the Coax cutter on the LMR-400 Cable turned it a couple of Times , then
turned it Over turned it again WOW Perfect , Pushed it right up on the
Connecter and crimped it all up Then I attached to My comet GP-15 Tri
Band Vert Wrapped nice Scotch tape around it Then I climbed up in a Tree
and put ot up 70 Ft .

It was cold and late in the evening But I was so excited to Hook up To My
Kenwood TS-2000 Which I did and I had No receive but for some local strong
repeater that was in the noise.

Well about a Week later in the Cold I took it all down and found that the
Crimp on connecter the coax had pulled out of the ant just enough to not
work , And I had even had a Small loop Taped at that point to keep it in .

So I Just put all the fancy tools away and got a Good Amphenol Connector and
soldered it on Put it back up and Everything is still working great.

Number one always use Good Connecter like Amphenol, I have made a Few Crimp
on Jumper cables but never on any Ant that I cannot reach , I am just
sharing My experience others may have better luck, And I am not saying I
did everything right but I do know they were not Amphenol or good quality
connectors , But it is not easy to climb trees and put up antennas at 63
Yrs old

PS went to a Ham Fest once and a guy had Gold and Silver plated PL-259
Connectors 20 for

$ 10.00 Dollars

I looked to see what Brand No name on them, I always and everyone should
take time to look under the tables, He had a Box of about 50 tarnished
Amphenol Connectors I was looking through them and He ask You like the old
dirty ones , I said yes I could just clean them up, He said well You can
have the whole box for $ 5.00 Dollars I gave Him the money and Smiled all

Thanks everyone for the input.

I can understand the statements regarding standardizing on connectors and
cable in order to minimize tooling.

The connectors I originally purchased were not labeled in any way. They were
cheapies I specifically bought at a hamfest in order to get a little
practice in.

I will take a look at a few manufacturers and see what info I came up with.
RF Products and Amphenol come to mind first hand. I have used Amphenol in
the past for other connectors and trust their quality.

I hope you all will pardon my ignorance on this subject. I have a bit of
experience with electronics but not with cabling. Especially not with
crimped connectors. I have always soldered things in the past, but when it
came to RF connectors, I was not having much success. So I chose to take a
look into crimping.

BTW, I crimped my first TNC connector the other night and was amazed at how
easy it was in comparison to soldering a connector.

Jeff, I will go through the archives and see what I can find. I usually have
poor luck doing searches in yahoo groups, but since you gave the date I can
most likely find it.

Thanks again for everyone's input.

I posted a long message on the subject.

Basically I am not sure what size hex to use for the above
stated RG-58A/U and BNC and TNC connectors.

The manufacturer's docs for the connectors will specify which die size to
use. *Usually* the ferrule crimp for RG58 is 0.213. The center pin varies
a bit between manufacturers. The biggest difference with the center pins
is
whether or not there is an area for the crimp close to the coax that is
smaller diameter than the rest of the cylindrical part of the pin.
Personally, I always solder the center pin, especially on cable with a
solid
 center conductor.

Also, I have a question regarding stripping the cable. I am
not going to be doing high volumes of cables, but probably
will be doing them on different size of coax. Would you
recommend a stripper or will a razor knife suffice.

A good utility knife will suffice with a little practice.

Lastly, and relating to the coax strippers: Don't different
connectors, even on the same type/size of coax, need
  different stripping lengths?

 Sometimes yes.

  This would probably translate
into quite a few different strippers for different cables and
  connectors, no?

 Yes, it could

grounded I had to design a circuit that not only combined the audio but also
isolated the speaker leads from ground.

What I came up with was to use audio isolation transformers for each radio.
A shielded audio cable goes from the speaker jack on the radio to each
isolation transformer. Each transformer has an 8 ohm 1 watt resistor in
parallel with the primary. This provides an 8 ohm load for each radio.
These transformers are also available at Radio Shack. The secondary of each
transformer has one lead grounded and the other lead goes to a resistor.
Each transformers secondary lead with the resistor is tied together and feed
the input of the Motorola amplified speaker. This is a simple resistive
mixing network that isolates each radio not only from each other but from
ground as well. Since this is a passive circuit there is some loss but the
amplified Motorola speaker more than makes up for it.

In actual use the volume level on each radio is just a little less than if
you were using the internal speaker. And turning up the audio about 3/4 of
the way produces enough audio to drive you out of the car. The disadvantage
is as noted that all the audio comes from the same place and it is necessary
from time to time to look at the radios to see which one is receiving.
However if each radios volume is set at slightly different levels it is easy
to determine which one is active.

This has also been tried with the amplified Radio Shack speaker with almost
the same results. It is pretty hard to beat the amplified Motorola speakers
for loudness and clarity.

[Repeater-Builder] OT TAPR President Emeritus Dr David Toth, VE3GYQ (SK)

TAPR President Emeritus Dr David Toth, VE3GYQ (SK)

David Toth opened the 2008 ARRL/TAPR Digital Communications Convention.
Watch the video

www.youtube.com/user/KN4AQ#p/u/6/yBrumFbn05o [Video courtesy of ARVN's Gary
Pierce, KN4AQ]

Dr David Toth, VE3GYQ -- President Emeritus of Tucson Amateur Packet Radio
(TAPR) -- passed away Friday, February 26after a long battle with cancer. He
was 55. A resident of Spencerville, Ohio, Toth served as a Director and
Executive Vice President of TAPR in the 1980s and was elected President of
the organization in September 2005. With his advancing illness, he decided
not to stand for re-election last October and was instead named President
Emeritus with Steve Bible, N7HPR, taking the reins as TAPR President.

Dave was a great manager during his tenure at the head of TAPR, said ARRL
Contributing Editor and TAPR Secretary Stan Horzepa, WA1LOU. I give him a
lot of credit for the success of TAPR's involvement in the high performance
software defined radio (HPSDR) projects. The ham radio world has lost one of
its best with VE3GYQ's passing.

An ARRL Life Member, Toth was a medical doctor who, despite his busy
schedule, still made time to be an active amateur. In addition to
experimenting with digital communications, he was an avid VHF contester.
Licensed since the 1970s, Toth -- a native of Windsor, Ontario -- came to
the US in 1993 to practice emergency medicine in Ohio. He was a partner of
Premier Health Care Services in Dayton and worked at Lima (Ohio) Memorial
Health System and St Rita's Medical Center (also in Lima) until the time of
his illness.

Dave was an extreme pleasure to work with, TAPR President Steven Bible,
N7HPR, told the ARRL. Most people saw Dave's dry wit and humor, but
underneath, he was also very passionate about TAPR and promoting the
technical side of the Amateur Radio.

QST Editor Steve Ford, WB8IMY, remembered Toth fondly: After years of
telephone chats and e-mails, I finally met Dave Toth in the flesh at the
2006 ARRL/TAPR Digital Communications Conference in Tucson. Some say a
brilliant intellect and a well-developed sense of humor are mutually
exclusive, but Dave defied the stereotype. It was difficult to keep a
straight face at the forums while Dave was muttering irreverent comments. He
will be greatly missed.

Bob McGwier, N4HY, who worked with Toth on SDR and other digital
communications projects, told the ARRL that Toth was important to Amateur
Radio in so many ways. He was an early member of TAPR, a long time
supporter of AMSAT and he gave of his time and talents to promote technical
endeavors in Amateur Radio. Dave was an important player in the earliest
days of packet radio in that he helped promote packet and supported it with
on the air hardware, but he also participated in the development of a widely
used BBS software suite that helped promote packet radio. As a board member
and President of TAPR, he helped TAPR become the principal support for Open
HPSDR, a project to promote the development of hardware and software for
software defined radio use by Amateur Radio. TAPR kitted the hardware
developments and made the widely available to amateurs everywhere. Dave was
a great confidante, advisor, and friend. He will be sorely missed by all who
knew him.

Toth was a private pilot for more than 30 years and an avid amateur
astronomer. Since he was a young boy, Toth enjoyed looking at the night sky
and reading about space and the stars. He had his own observatory that he
opened up on clear nights. Toth was the founding member of the London
(Ontario) Astronomy Club and served as its president; he was a member of the
Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and belonged to the Lima, Dayton and
Columbus Astronomy Clubs.

Friends may call from 3-8 PM Monday, March 1 and 1-8 PM Tuesday, March 2 at
the Shawnee Chapel of the Chiles-Laman Funeral Home in Lima, Ohio; a parish
wake service will begin at 8 PM on Tuesday. Services will begin at 10:30 AM
on Wednesday, March 3 at St Charles Catholic Church. Burial of the cremated
remains will be at a later date.

You can do it but depending on the quality of the Parts you use it will
drift. When You have it on the test bench and add caps Etc.. and it reads
right on Freq , unless it is going to be within a few deg it will drift
and When transmitting things will heat up and it will drift .

I have done it on Scanners. etc But You are talking about a repeater
with Someone's call on it and that may be at a remote site around other
Commercial Emergency Equipment.

I just had My Receive xtal for My 220 Micor repeater done at
http://www.icmfg.com/Temp comp for about $50.00

The old one would drift gradually in a 3 Mo period and I would only notice
this on Weak signals, I would adjust it back and it would drift. So I had
the one made and I have never had a problem.

I just picked up the X-9000 For 6 and 10 is it possible to use 2 Single
antennas one for 6 and one for 10 and use a mobile duplexer If so Who
makes the duplexer

Thanks Don

KA9QJG

In looking at the original message in this thread, I have used the
absolutely most simple solution that is likely available anywhere. I am
using a Syntor X9000 on both 10 and 6 M without anymore than a cut for 6M
mobile bird killer whip and its associated spring with a Hustler 10M coil
on top. Rounding up the necessary fittings for the top might take some
looking but I have found them at least at the vendors at Dayton. The mount
that I am using on one car is a homemade bracket that fastens between the
fender and the hood and has an SO239 on one end and a 3/8 x 24 thread going
at 90 degrees. It works perfectly. In fact I have two of them in use on
two different vehicles.

Simply cut the whip for probably 52.5 or so and establish the lowest SWR
with the 10M coil attached and then adjust the 10M coil for resonance on
29.6. Other than the coil getting smacked once in awhile coming to near
destruction I have had little problem with this set up. In probably about 5
years with this set up I've only lost one coil.

Just one tech's / ham's idea/opinion.Now if the bands would only open up
a little bit. HI!

Thanks

looking for some High Definition content. Or maybe you're just
looking for some additional sources to compliment your existing cable
and/or satellite services. Well, here's a tool that can analyze your
location to help determine what FREE broadcasts might be available in
your neighborhood.
This tool can help answer questions like
- Which broadcasters are transmitting locally?
- How far are the transmitters from me?
- Which direction should I point my antenna?
- How strong are the signals in my area?
- What analog and digital channels are available?
- (NEW) How will things look after the analog shutoff in Feb-200

[Repeater-Builder] Shutting Down Battery Back up

2008-10-19 Thread ka9qjg
I have a Astron 60 Amp Power supply with the battery back up option
it works Great I have it Fused. However in the Testing I noticed that
on Battery Back up I only loose about 10 Watts that is fine, But as
the Battery drains down the Repeater gets Distorted and of Course this
is normal too Because of the input Voltage getting Lower ,

Now the question and I have not seen this talked about I would assume
all I would need is a Normally closed Relay and as the Voltage dropped
below a Certain Level it would open and just break the connection to
the Battery back up , Is this the way to do it

[Repeater-Builder] Battery back up

2008-04-02 Thread ka9qjg
Well I know I will sound like an Idiot asking this 3 part Question, But
I have been called worse

I have a 60 amp Astron with the Battery Back option that requires a 50
amp fuse on the Battery side.

I know I can get a Buss type circuit breaker type that trips , But
could I find something similar that would auto reset . Most times they
will trip due to a surge Etc .

Can I just by a AC type Circuit Box and put in a 50 amp AC circuit
Breaker and mount that box on the inside of the 4 Ft Rack ,

Question 3 what is the simplest way for some type of Notification When
the Repeater has tripped over to Battery Power.

Go easy on the answers and especially the comments And I don't want to
hear any Locals in My area talking about Me on the air I will be
listening Ha Ha

Thanks Don KA9QJG

The only Problem in Having the repeater builders Kevin and Scott Makes
it for You the way You want it , is When You get it back and put it at a
Site You never get to see it anymore it just keeps on working and
working well unless Mother Nature gets You

RE: [Repeater-Builder] New QRM on 220 MHz.......?

2007-12-30 Thread ka9qjg

For the People who are having Interference Problems on 220 , You might
want to Check around the Walgreen Stores that have put up the New
Electronic signs. I Have a Repeater on 224.740 and a few of the Stores
if I am in the Parking lot or get within a block I have a Full scale
reading on the output 224.740

A related story to this Months back a Local FD was using their simplex
Freq of 153.890 at a Fire Near a Walgreen's that had the New Sign,
and the Fireman could not hear their Dispatcher . An Investigation was
done and it was found that the New sign was putting out a carrier on
that freq .

Walgreen's were notified and the Problem was fixed by some filtering ,
I Took some Equipment out about 3 in the Morning to 5 Local Walgreen's
and the 3 that had the New Sign , I had Spurs all over the Place
130-470 Mhz . I Was also informed by another Ham who had helped with
the FD Problem and He gave Me some Walgreen Contact Numbers but I never
did pursue It , I don't have any users who live by a Walgreen's but
they all have the Problem in their Mobiles as they drive By . I don't
know if this is a Widespread problem or not but other users can check it
out too and see.

Happy and Safe New Year to All

You know what is interesting about that Old Motorola,You could probably
just plug it in and it would still Work, As You can tell I am Biased
Motorola Rocks.

I always like the Tax payers who Paid for the Maintenance Contract
for a Old Motorola Micor in the Trunk of a FD Or PD Veh that never
needed to be touched for 20 Yrs . Just jerk them out and throw them in a
trunk of a New Vehicle.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] A couple of questions

2007-11-19 Thread ka9qjg

I needed a Temporary Exciter for My 440 Repeater , So a Fellow Ham
in the Two way Business Had two Maxtracs one was 25 watts and one was
a 2 Watt unit that used in the Steel Mills for a link , He said since
I only needed 2 Watts the 2 Watt one would be better , well I thought
of Just using the 25 Watt unit and turning it down to 2 Watts it would
work better and run cooler , He said No it would not and gave Me the 25
Watt one .

Well I set it up for 2 Watts and to My surprise the Heat sink got Hot ,
So I took it back and got the 2 Watt unit and it ran cold at two watts .
So I learned My lesson more is not always better , Now if someone wants
to put the Reason in Layman terms that would be nice too

UPS , For a Repeater site that may not have the Cleanest AC Coming in . I
do have a 50 Amp Astron with the Battery Backup on a Battery. I know that
should Clean most things up, But I am a little concerned about what’s coming
in. on the AC, I also have Great grounding and a Poly Phaser on the Antenna
Side.

Speaking of the Alnico DR-235 , I had A Ham Friend Who was told by a Ham
Radio Dealer with four State stores the Radio has been discontinued ,
They had one left , and the Reason was the New Model would come out made
with Lead free Solder

I have No idea if this is true or not, but maybe with the Lead Toy problem

2007-09-19 Thread Don KA9QJG

I made a Surprising observation many Yrs ago when I first looked at a
Spectrum Analyzer, Service Monitor, I would listen to many PD , FD Etc.
Freqs and was surprised how Many were Low or High on Freq , I wonder How
many Techs would just tune the receivers to make it sound better .

I have found that Most not all Ham radio Equipment to be Much better.
Depending who had the Golden Screwdriver in it , That is Why I got My Ham
lic and upgraded to a Platinum Screwdriver big difference , Even insulated
for tuning Slugs . Ha Ha , And without Saying the Repeater Builders on Here
the Freq would be Right on .

PS Some of the Old Radio Receivers and Repeaters had a Nice big analogue
Disc Meter You could watch on Incoming signals --30-0 –30 + Center for on
Freq it was fun to watch the Meter go Left and Right of freq

Happy Repeater Building
