you will never get asked again. Every time you go to that site, the rule
is applied instead of prompting you for what to do. If you look in your
cookie manager, you will find hundreds of rules for domains. Most of
these are set to block a site from setting cookies.

It is these rules that seem to be Disappearing. If I close SM and open
it again, when I open my browser I find no cookie rule for the google
domain what so ever. There is a "never save" passwords rule, but nothing
for cookies. If I go to google and select "allow for session" and "use
for all", there will be an entry in the cookie manager showing this
rule. If I close SM and open again, the rule is gone and I have to
manually set the cookie permissions for google again.

This is absolutely new behavior. I have been using SM since it was
mozilla, and ever since session cookies were introduced, I have been
doing things more or less the same way.

Even if I manually add a rule in the data manager, it is not there after
I close and reopen SM. It is the cookies that expire at the end of the

LMH, the only thing (to me) then is that your changes are not being
saved!! Could you check to see if some file in your set-up/profile is
set to "Read Only"?? Maybe Prefs.js or thereabouts!!

I see you got it working. However if you change to another profile you
will need to do it all again. An easy way to get around this is to add
the registration in your user.js file in your profile directory.

First install apturl:

$ sudo apt-get install apturl

Add the following to your existing user.js if you already have one, if
not open gedit and paste, then save as user.js in your seamonkey profile
directory (~/.mozilla/seamonkey//user.js:

# register protocol:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Register_protocol#Firefox_3.5_and_above
# network.protocol-handler.expose.foo -> Value -> false
# network.protocol-handler.external.foo -> Value -> true
# network.protocol-handler.app.foo -> Value -> /path/to/app

pref("network.protocol-handler.expose.apt",false);
pref("network.protocol-handler.external.apt",true);
pref("network.protocol-handler.app.apt","/usr/bin/apturl");

Note: the first line is all one line & the first 4 lines are comments so
that you'll remember where you got the information from & the format.

You can do the same for your non-ubuntu firefox profile(s).

Remove any 'apt' that you hand installed in about:config (right click
and click reset). Restart SeaMonkey/Firefox with the user.js in the
profile directory. When you click on an apturl you'll be prompted for
the application. Click 'browse' and 'File System' and then to /usr/bin
scroll down & click on 'apturl' (full path is as above: /usr/bin/apturl.
Tick the box to 'always use this application' & you're good to go.

That way you won't need to mess with the Ubuntu software center & when
you click on an apt: you'll get prompted for your password &
the install will proceed.

Note: the Ubuntu packaged Firefox & SeaMonkey include a extension called
'ubufox'. That extension (which is the first one I always disable) adds
the 'apt' protocol settngs by default.

You might also find this of interest (recommended by the Ubuntu apt wiki
- ):

http://appnr.com/
 be sure to see:
   http://blog.appnr.com/about/ http://blog.appnr.com/privacy/

I can't vouch for the site - I just found it from the wiki. I did test
by installing Amarok (using SeaMonkey of course) & it worked fine; goes
to the ubuntu repository, downloads & installs if from there.

As with all applications of this type, use the apt protocol & apturl at
your own risk. https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apturl/+bugs

Seems like a wrong-headed approach, since apt really is not a valid

All the links I see on that page begin with http, as they should.

So it seems logical to ask how your installation got the idea in its

Quite right. I withdraw my objection. I overlooked those.

What it apparently wants to do is launch the Ubuntu Software Center to

Seems like a wrong-headed approach, since apt really is not a valid
protocol, and registering it shouldn't fix anything.

All the links I see on that page begin with http, as they should.

So it seems logical to ask how your installation got the idea in its

Quite right. I withdraw my objection. I overlooked those.

What it apparently wants to do is launch the Ubuntu Software Center to
do the install. I did the changes suggested by WaltS in an earlier
thread and now it's prompting me for which application it should launch.
Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to tell it to launch the Software
Center.

Chrome was able to figure it out, but I can't seem to see the settings
it is using... no way to list "Helper Apps" that I can see in that browser.

If you plan on listening to your music library or watching films in
Ubuntu then you'll need to have the necessary codecs installed.
For legal reasons Ubuntu can't provide these 'out of the box&', but
the installer does offer to install them during set-up.
If you didn't check that box during installation it's no biggy: hit

Not working with Firefox either, but I got it to register in SeaMonkey
following the instructions for Firefox 3.5 and above, found here.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Register_protocol

Now it comes up with the Launch Application popup and asks you to Chose
an Application to open the file. I have no idea what that application
might be.

I never use the one-click installs, but do it the geeky, nerdy way, by
installing the application from the software management application,
which usually finds all the dependencies, and installs them.

Hopefully a Ubuntu guru will be more helpful.

Well, I tried it with Chrome, and it launched the Ubuntu Software

using the website you provided as I have no idea what the program name
is, or where it resides. I'm not yet familiar enough with the Unity
interface to figure out where all that information resides and
right-clicking on the icon doesn't bring up a "Properties" notebook as
it does under Windows... HELP!

The Windows file-type options will indeed control which application
opens a local PDF file. However, I found that those options were not
used by SeaMonkey. For a link to a PDF file on a Web server, SeaMonkey
somehow used the sequence in which the applications were installed.

I don't really know if this is still true. I have not installed Acrobat
(the writer) in over 6 years; I'm still using Acrobat 4.0, not wanting
to pay for an upgrade. On the other hand, I keep Adobe Reader current,
having installed Adobe Reader 10.1.3 earlier this year.

I currently get PDF links from Web servers opening in the Adobe Reader
plug-in, within a SeaMonkey window.

Not quite so simple, but close.

After installing both programs, the user can go into the Windows file
type options and set either one as the default for handling PDFs, and
that setting will overrule the order of installation.

But in the most common scenario, where the user doesn't take this
explicit action, you're right. Whichever one you install last will take
over by setting itself as the default handler for PDFs (unless, of
course, the advanced user deselects that option during installation).

When I had both installed, I had some really quirky behavior, and when I
ditched the Reader, things quieted down. Good advice.

I've recently begun having the same problem, all on Windows XP
machines. On my home computers, PDFs open in the SM browser (my
preference), but at work, after a recent SM upgrade, they began
opening in my full version of Adobe Acrobat. All the machines use the
same operating system and the identical version of SM

Acrobat has the same preference settings as Reader; my problem is not
there, as my preference is already set to "display PDF in browser."

It also has nothing to do with email settings for attached files; my
problem is PDFs opened from web links.

I've followed other advice offered in this NG but I've never figured
out where the glitch is, or how to restore the behavior I prefer...

Thanks everyone for the responses to my original post on this subject. I
was not aware of the Edit, Preferences, Browser, Helper Applications
page; my XP computer, in helper applications, was set to "Use Adobe
Acrobat (in SeaMonkey)" and that is what it did. I changed it to "Use
Adobe Reader (default)" and it changed, instantly. Bravo! This is what I
wanted, thanks for the suggestion. I'm a happy camper on this issue.

In resolving my issue, I found a problem with the Win7 64-bit computer.
The W7 computer, in helper applications, was set to "Always Ask" but it
didn't ask, it always uses Adobe Reader. I tried "Use Adobe Acrobat (in
SeaMonkey)", no luck. Shutting SeaMonkey down didn't help. This isn't a
problem for me, as I prefer to use Adobe Reader.

The issue still exists, however, with the W7 computer; why won't it
change to "Use Adobe Acrobat (in SeaMonkey)"? Is it perhaps because it
is 64-bit? I suggest that the development team needs to resolve this,
but not for me, because I am happy with using Adobe Reader on both
computers.

Certainly an interesting issue.

That action is set in Adobe Reader. You don't say what version you

Oh! I had forgotten all about this. The answer is that, if you have
both Adobe Reader and Acrobat (the writer) installed, a PDF link in a

I tried this, selecting "Use Adobe Acrobat (in SM)" -- but then it
opened PDFs with Adobe Reader in SM, not what I wanted.

So I uninstalled Adobe Reader; then it began opening PDFs in Adobe
Acrobat in the browser, which puts me back where I started and where I
want to be -- thank you for the suggestion!

Let us know if you find out the answer.
I have never been able to open a pdf in SM

Pdf's open ok in IE as a web window.
I use Foxit. There is no adobe on my machines.

That action is set in Adobe Reader. You don't say what version you
have so it might not be in the same place in all versions. In my
Reader X (version 10) it is Edit-Preferences-Internet and check or
uncheck "Display PDF in browser" in right pane under Web Browser Options.

Acrobat has the same preference settings as Reader; my problem is not
there, as my preference is already set to "display PDF in browser."

It also has nothing to do with email settings for attached files; my
problem is PDFs opened from web links.

The only think else I know to check is SeaMonkey's Helper Applications
settings. Edit-Preferences-Browser-Helper Applications scroll right
panel down to Adobe Acrobat Document and make sure it is set to your
preference of either "Use Adobe Reader" or "Use Adobe Acrobat (in
SeaMonkey)". If that is OK I don't know where else to look.

If you see two different ways to display TWO DIFFERENT attachments, this
might be the result of differing MIME types being communicated. With
links to PDF files in Web pages, Adobe Reader is launched unless the
MIME type in the HTTP header is application/pdf. Too often, that is not
the MIME type.

If this is indeed your problem, the cause lies with the sender.

question on status of 2 old and 1 new bug

2012-07-17 Thread hawker

There are three bugs that are really annoying me in SM.
Two are old and known, one I have not heard talked about yet. I'm
wondering if/when there will be any effort to fix them.

1) The search button to the right of the address line often does
nothing. Using the side bar search fist then fixes it. Been this way for
a while and reported here.

2) The busy cursor indicator when anywhere but in a message in mail
(also often talked about here).

3) New regression bug in browser around 2.10 or so. I think it may be
in 2.10.1 but not 2.10 as I only recently noticed it and I get it all
the time now. In some situations when you RMB on a selected item (like
when you select it first) the window does not collapse into just the
valid choices (copy, etc) and you get a huge string that fills my 1200
down monitor. This is very similar to when we had this bug around a
year ago, but then it always happened not just in certain cases. Is this
bug known and reported yet?

Thanx

I called coupons.com. They told me I was the only one questioning about

Great idea, but then what do I tell my wife? I've been using the excuse that I

Safer? Why do you want to let Google store all that information about

I also use EaseUS products, free and paid for. They work great. Just did
a drive/system restore with EaseUS TODO Backup and it worked like a charm.

As for backup stratgies, I do a daily drive image of the boot disk (C:\)
and the Programs and Data drive (in my case, G:\). I also so daily
backups of my Mozilla products profiles (just for ease of restoration of
individual files). I also do separate backups of various data folders,
for the same reason.

As Chris said, there is little point to doing a backup of the Mozilla
products' install folders. You can always download them and install
them. It's the data/profile folders that you need to backup. Regularly.

There's a lot more to backup strategies. Do a Google search and educate
yourself.

BTW, I always do FULL backups, not incremental or differential. I keep
at least two days of backups on an external drive then periodically
delete the backups I don't need to save drive space.

I use EaseUS' TODO Backup Workstation to manage backups of all the
computers on my LAN. Essentially, you install TODO Backup on all clients
and Workstation on one main (server) computer. On the main computer you
can them use Workstation to backup whatever you want on all the client
computers. Again, works like a charm.I

FWIW, I also in the past have used Acronis True Image Home sw for
backup. they have totally screwed it up over several generations and I
stopped buying updates to it and do not use it at all anymore. it used

I have/use PM 8.0 Build 1274 dated 3/14/2003 and there is no backup
function in that version. It does allow you to create a backup partition
where you can store "backup files or image files created by PowerQuest(R)

install Datakeeper to do the back-ups but I don't see that anywhere.

You COPY the partition, give it a new name (source and date in my case) and change it

on the net without these perverts peeping all the time.

With an attitude like that you clearly don't want to use their
services, so just block them.

It is not a case of not wanting to use services it is a case of not
wanting to be spied on all the time. Also; I don't use (for example)
FaceBook. But what happens when other sites are linking to FB or passing
info to FB and likewise Google Analytics.

I use several devices to avoid these perverts getting even more info
about me. Using Browzar; clearing cookies etc, regularly; blocking
almost all sites from using cookies etc., etc., etc.

Start off with something along the lines of
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt and add your own entries for
sites you don't want tracking you

I understand the basic idea. It looks similar to something in Linux. But
where do I put the hosts.txt file in Vista?

Requestpolicy + noscript does the job for me, but it is a bit of a
pain for the first week or three configuring what sites are allowed&
it's more for people that might want to allow some of that instead of
completely blocking it.

It is a pain in &^%&^& that we have to do this kind of thing to defend
ourselves against people who should be prying in the first place.

Thans for the info.

To mention a good initiative:
A German IT news portal torn between supporting social networks and not
willing to do the above (for several reasons, I guess) includes
potential link to FB/G+/Twitter, but only activates them (via JS) upon
users demand (either case-by-case or by-default).
They do share their code, IIRC.

See:

http://www.heise.de/extras/socialshareprivacy/

Sorry, I did not find an English version of the pages; the international
branch uses pure links (no JS) to interact with the social networks...
maybe something that could be requested from them, if anybody's
interested.

Do you normally have javascript enabled? Noscript?
It seems like most of the FB, Google, Linkedin, etc. bits requires
javascript. Turning off or blocking JS cuts down on a lot of the

Well, yes, that's the very secure way.

There may be ways in between - for example my SM runs with NoScript (as
explained elsewhere) and I never use it to login to FB.
If you want to access FB, you can do that via a separate profile or
browser. I run FB in Firefox, where I do nothing else than FB
(communication, following events, etc.).
Thus, they can store all the cookies they like but cannot relate that to
the browsing I do in SM.

Sadly, FB (amongst other reasons) has dried out some local forums, so
it's hard to complete ignore it.

That's the sort of grey-compromise I run between black and white. ;-)

Well, many (many, many, many...) websites use a Google tool called
"Google Analytics" to get demographics data about visitors: where they
live, what kind of browsers they use and such. I don't know much about
Google Analytics, so I'm likely wrong in the details.

Also, many (many, many many...) websites have some sort of facebook
thingie on their pages. It might be just the "like" button, it might be
something more complex -- I know a few, for instance, that insert their
Facebook stream sort of like a blog.

Are Google and Facebook learning stuff from your habits, in order to
server you more effective ads (and therefore charge more for placing the
ads in the first time)? Probably. But then, this is not restricted to
your European newspapers; most sites nowadays have this kind of nosy
add-ins (either these or similar ones from other purveyors).

If you disapprove of such snooping, you might wish to try installing the
NoScript add-on to your Firefox/Seamonkey browser. It will block all
such auxiliary scripts until you explicitly authorize them. The downside
is that you will see lots of unexpectedly blank spaces in pages, and
then you will have to figure out which of the scripts that page calls
you have to actually allow in order to get the content you want. This
can be a big list. Most pages I visit tend to be under half-a-dozen, but
I have seen some with, like, twenty scripts.
