Hi Jef, No worries, Jef. I'm just glad you made it to the 'Fest and back home okay. It was great seeing you again! A few folks showed up at the radio museum and we enjoyed it. But hanging out with radio friends Friday-Saturday felt really good. I'm taking to heart your upbeat demeanor after all you've been through. [Swlfest] Well wishes for a good fest
Hello fellow festers, I had every good intention of attending the first post-COVID in person fest. I think I have only missed two fests since 1996. However, the change from a Winter SWL Fest to a Spring SWL Fest took the fest from probably the slowest time of year and plopped it in the middle of the busiest time of year for me not to mention that it is Mother's Day Weekend. Since we last met in person I became a grandpa, those who I am connected with on Facebook are acutely aware of that. How did that happen? Well, I know how it happened but how did it happen? Kenny Chesney was right, don't blink. I went from being a single guy on the prowl when the bar at the Kulpsville Holiday Inn turned in to a night club after dark, to a step-dad, then a dad, and now a grandpa. The "baby" leaves for college in mid-August. During the COVID era it became way to easy to make a few clicks on the Amazon App and grow the collection of SDR radios as well as cheap Chinese portable SW radios. Chinese SW portables are proliferating the market yet there is less and less to listen too, go figure. If you think about it, it's really amazing that now you can hold a device in the palm of your hand that took up half the desk and weighed thirty pounds back in the 60's. Here's wishing you a good fest and safe travels. Re: [Swlfest] Registration is now available for the Fest
Hi Matt, I share your concern about the efficacy of a Listening Lounge at this years' SWL Fest. It's been one of my favorite features of the conference. For decades, the SWL Fest was held at the Best Western Hotel in Kulpsville (Landsdale exit of 476-N) where our listening lounge was in a 2nd floor conference room with a large window that couldn't be opened. Hotel management got wise to folks who made a hole in their unopenable hole room window screen to drop a longwire antenna out of it. Stiff fines were levied upon guests who left a hole in their window screen. The management even posted a sign at the front desk during 'Fests warning us that leaving a hole in our window screen wound earn us a stiff fine. Ah, memories... When the 'Fest was moved to the Hilton DoubleTree Suites in Plymouth Meeting for financial reasons (its new management decided to start price-gouging us, despite our bringing them lots of business every year) I noticed the spacious top-floor Presidential Suite was being renovated and had an accessible balcony--just below the roof. And I found a way to access the roof and found antenna-mounting options and a way to drop feedlines to the balcony. A perfect venue for our future Listening Lounge needs! So I suggested to Rich and John that they look into renting the Presidential Suite as a listening lounge for future 'fests. To their credit, they did that and made it a combination Listening Lounge and Hospitality Suite, which was a wonderful success. Volunteers set it up with tables and refreshments every year, antennas were erected on the balcony and rooftop, and people generously brought and set up their impressive receivers--some of which many of us only dreamed of having access to. I will miss that dearly. I'm going to drive up to the Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Fort Washington and do some covert reconnaissance to explore potential options for a Listening Lounge there, and will report them here. With luck, we'll have at least one usable option. To quote veteran SWL'er Mick Jagger, "You can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, well, you might just find, You get what you need!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ef9QnZVpVd8 -Ed Cummings At 02:20 PM 4/6/2024, Matt Blaze wrote: Also, will there be a listening lounge? Re: [Swlfest] THE WINTER SWL FEST IS MOVING DATES !!!!!
The 'elephant in the room' in this email thread is the stark reality that without a sufficient number of booked hotel rooms, we can't have the conference facilities we want. That's how hotel/conference facilities do business. Rich and John have ably juggled these requirements for many years--and a lot of other SWLfest organization details--extremely well, in my opinion. It's a huge labor of love for them. The industry term for this business model is often called "heads in beds": a group of people must book a certain minimum number of hotel rooms to subsidize the conference facilities the group wants to use. Example: If we have 100 people pre-pay their hotel rooms at the DoubleTree, (I'm guessing on the actual number this year; it varies) then we can afford to use the conference facilities we want. Otherwise, the conference admission fee would have to increased high enough to cover the unsubsidized cost of the conference facilities we want. And if that higher admission fee is more than a certain number of people are willing to pay, then we can't have an in-person SWLfest there. The virtual conference model we used in 2021-2023 (necessarily due to the pandemic) taught us it brought attendees who otherwise couldn't afford to come, including some new presenters who made excellent presentations. So that's why Rich and John are considering a 'best of both' hybrid model this year with both in-person and virtual attendees. Doing that would bring even more operational and logistical challenges. Pulling all this off so an in-person SWLFest is affordable for enough people, and has a full schedule of interesting presentations, seems more complicated than a Rubik's Cube! If anyone's curious, here's the URL for a web page showing diagrams and specifications of the DoubleTree Plymouth Meeting conference facilities. (The Presidential Suite that we've used for our Hospitality Room since 2014 after I first suggested it in 2012 is not shown.) https://www.hilton.com/en/hotels/phlghdt-doubletree-suites-philadelphia-west/events/ So if we're looking at alternative venues, this info could be helpful in determining what might work for us. -Ed Cummings At 12:47 PM 1/13/2024, Dennis Dura wrote: I'll add another 2¢ to what Fred said. Re: [Swlfest] THE WINTER SWL FEST IS MOVING DATES !!!!!
Rich and John, You may have already considered this idea, but some churches have decent event facilities that they sometimes rent out for much less than money than conventional conference venues charge. Since the SWLFest will be over on Saturday night (before Sunday, when the church will need their space back) this might be a good, low-cost option. If the church is very near a low-cost hotel and eateries, that would be ideal. Perhaps some folks on this email list know of a church like this in one of the geographic areas you mentioned, and which might be interested in doing this with us. The bottom line, obviously, is that with a likely smaller attendance than past SWLFests, we need a lower-cost venue (very near affordable lodging and dining) to keep ticket costs affordable. -Ed Cummings. Public transit access is also a variable in the mix. John and Rich have been doing a superb job for decades finding and wrangling suitable venues for the SWL Fest. I'm confident their experience doing this for so long makes them well aware of what attendees want and need. Suitability, location, and cost are very difficult criteria to juggle. [Swlfest] Nielsen Ratings Media Study - Shortwave Rating Data
Today I received in the U.S. Mail a media survey from Nielsen in Allentown, PA, along with $2 cash for my time. They promised to mail me another $5 cash for completing their survey. For those who don't know, Nielsen is the largest TV & Radio ratings company in the U.S. Nielsen's reports can significantly affect media makers' decisions. Among Nielsen's study methods is scientifically selecting a small "sample" of households to obtain their data from. So a single household's survey answers could represent thousands of households. I think it's hilarious that Nielsen chose my household! (Check out my answers to the 6th question below.) While I have no idea if or how my data will reflect in Nielsen's report, I do enjoy media hacking. Nielsen asked me the following survey questions. (My answers appear in parentheses.) Re: [Swlfest] Why Reviving Shortwave is a Non-Starter - Radio World
Tom, thanks for sharing this article by two folks we know in our SWLfest community. The dearth of shortwave broadcasts to shortwave receivers seems like a chicken-or-egg problem to me. If there was a good selection of good content broadcast on shortwave around the world (like there used to be) then more people would get shortwave radios to hear it (like they used to do before the content dried up due to most governments deciding the internet was the shiny new way to reach their target audiences around the globe.) This is a problem that DRM has been running into. Without content, there's no market to consume it, and there's no market for HF/MW/FM DRM receivers, and no financial incentive for their manufacture. HF DRM transmitters and exciters are readily available from Nautel and others, and HF DRM receiver manufacturers have ready-to-go designs and production facilities to make lots of radios for anyone who comes to them with a check. If just some of the tens of millions of U.S. taxpayer Dollars being squandered on some USAGM contractors were instead spent on 'seed money' for the production of DRM broadcasts and hundreds of thousands of low-cost portable HF/MW/FM DRM receivers for free distribution in target audience areas, that might jump-start HF DRM, which has impressive potential for conveying digital information around the world without all-too-easy internet censorship. Somebody has to take the lead on this. I'd rather see a tiny fraction of my tax dollars spent on such an initiative than on even a small fraction of the many Billions spent on waste, fraud, and abuse... Does anyone agree with me on this? -Ed At 10:56 AM 4/6/2022, Thomas Sundstrom wrote: <https://www.radioworld.com/columns-and-views/guest-commentaries/why-reviving-shortwave-is-a-non-starter>https://www.radioworld.com/columns-and-views/guest-commentaries/why-reviving-shortwave-is-a-non-starter Tom W2XQ ___ Swlfest mailing list Swlfest@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/swlfest To unsubscribe: Send an E-mail to swlfest-requ...@hard-core-dx.com?subject=unsubscribe, or visit the URL shown above. Unlimited wireless high-speed accounts are available at very low cost to 501(c)(3) organizations that apply for it through a special program. So if you have an affiliation with a 501(c)(3) organization, and are willing to facilitate their participation in this program, then you can probably get this deal, too. (I don't think NASWA is a 501(c)(3) but maybe I'm wrong.) Over the past decade I've helped several 501(c)(3) organizations qualify for this low-cost wireless internet service. At least one of them has a user on this SWLFest mailing list. The service uses the Sprint/T-Mobile 4G LTE Band 41 spectrum (2496-2690 GHz) which the FCC had long ago allocated to the Instructional Television Fixed Service (aka Educational Broadcast Service). For over a decade it's been used for wireless internet service via low-cost dedicated 4G LTE WiFi 'hotspot' devices. Through a special FCC-approved 20-year agreement between some of the original ITFS/EBS licensees of Band 41 spectrum and Clear>Sprint>T-Mobile, this spectrum must be shared with those licensees by providing unlimited wireless internet accounts--which are then shared by participating 501(c)(3) organizations with their staff, members, volunteers, and the people they serve. As a volunteer for a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization, I use this service and routinely get 80 Mbps download speeds through an Inseego MIFI 8000 LTE modem/bridge/router (your mileage may vary.) The required Sprint/T-Mobile Band 41 (2.5 GHz) network only exists in certain geographical areas, so it's unlikely to work in rural and some other areas. The ITFS/EBS licensees charge participating 501(c)(3) "Direct Users" an annual admin fee of $120 for each of line of service, which can then be provided at cost (or more) by each 501(c)(3) to their staff, members, volunteers, and people they serve. The required LTE modem/bridge/WiFi routers costs less than $100 or less than $200, depending on the model and features. The bottom line is that unlimited internet connectivity $10/month is a remarkably good deal, especially if you can carry around with you as a high-speed WiFi mobile hotspot. I just got off a flawless Zoom conference on my laptop using this internet connection. If anyone on the SWLFest discussion list is interested, I can help point you in the right direction. But here's a link to a consortium of ITFS/EBS licensees called Voqal that offers these accounts and the requisite modem/bridge/router equipment to 501(c)(3) nonprofits. While this may all sound to good to be true, it's no scam--it's a clever repurposing of a defunct FCC service that allocated 2.5 GHz spectrum for educational purposes. Re: [Swlfest] First Draft: 2021 34th Annual Winter SWL Fest Program
As Arnie Coro explained to me, a prerequisite for his coming to speak at the SWLFest is his receiving a formal letter of invitation from a bona fide organization in the U.S. inviting him to a speaking engagement. In other words, he'd need formal letter of invitation from an 'Organizational Sponsor' that meets with the approval of his employer--the Cuban government. Separately, I was told that NASWA would not provide a formal letter of invitation offering to be Arnie's Organizational Sponsor. I don't know what criteria the Cuban government uses to determine acceptability of an Organizational Sponsor (it's probably subjective) or if NASWA would've met those criteria anyway. As I mentioned earlier, my most recent attempt to find a Organizational Sponsor was with the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication, which seemed likely to meet with the approval of the Cuban Government because its academic reputation would complement Mr. Coro's history as a Professor of Broadcasting at the University of Havana. So it seemed like a good match to have Arnie scheduled to speak there the same week as the SWLFest, and tangentially he could be brought to nearby Plymouth Meeting to informally meet up with some old radio friends ;-) After some back-and-forth inquiries and negotiation through my contact, a tenured Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, a sticking point of an apparently geopolitical nature arose--not from my contact, but from Penn administration bureaucrats. Subsequently, my Penn contact left to teach at another university. If anyone knows a faculty member or administration staffer at a university in the greater Philadelphia region who'd be willing and able to lobby their institution to be an Organizational Sponsor for Arnie Coro to speak there on the same week as a forthcoming SWLFest, and write a formal letter of invitation to Arnie Coro for his government to review, and if it seems that Institution would likely meet with the approval of the Cuban government, please let me know and I'll provide more details on how I this can be made to work. For years I've been asking around about a suitable local Organizational Sponsor, and nobody has offered a realistic proposal. You'd think this would be easier, but for a number of frustrating reasons it's not. The financial resources needed to pay for Arnie's travel expenses to the SWLFest are available, notwithstanding fickle U.S. foreign policy complicating both travel and the legal transfer of funds to Cuba for that purpose. Perhaps in 2021 the geopolitical winds of change will blow in a more progressive direction. The goal to bring Arnie Coro to speak at the SWLFest has long been a moving target. As for this year's virtual SWLFest, Sheldon Harvey noted below that Arnie recently told him the Cuban government does not allow access to Zoom meetings--the specific medium chosen for this year's SWLFest. So any suggestion that Arnie could call into one of Zoom's telephone numbers to access the 'phone' channel of the SWLFest Zoom meeting seems unworkable, as that would still constitute access to a Zoom meeting which is disallowed in Cuba. -Ed At 07:51 AM 1/22/2021, Richard Cuff wrote: For what it's worth, I don't believe either John or I have ever received personal correspondence from Mr. Coro. The Fest website, which has contact information available, would be a vehicle that Mr. Coro could use to reach out to us if he's interested. Ed is correct -- Zoom does allow participation via a phone call for an audio-only experience; if someone were to participate that way and -- during the relevant time of a session -- wish to ask a question, they could contact me (or whomever is acting in the host capacity at that thime) and open up their audio for the question. Re: [Swlfest] First Draft: 2021 34th Annual Winter SWL Fest Program
Dave, that's a good idea. But John Figliozzi has advised me that the two-day schedule is already full. For years I've tried to get an organizational sponsor (not a fiscal sponsor; I can arrange that) to 'legitimize' Arnie's trip to the Philly area so he could also speak at the SWLFest. Arnie has welcomed the opportunity, but the administrative and geopolitical challenges have been difficult to say the least. The closest I came to making this happen was a couple three years ago with the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication being the potential organizational sponsor. But that fell through due to apparently political reasons. And as of last year my contact at Penn is no longer there. Arnie Coro is a shortwave icon with more six decades of international broadcasting experience and several decades of producing a DX'ers program. Regardless of anyone's political biases, I think he'd be a good and fitting SWLFest presenter. Frankly, my biggest concern about this (aside from maybe not ever being able to successfully arrange this) is how Arnie might be treated here by some in our community. -Ed At 12:46 PM 1/16/2021, Dave Marthouse wrote: If he has the internet infrastructure to support it maybe you can get Arnie CO2KK from RHC. John, thanks for sharing that interesting history about WNYC. Sad indeed. We can honor the memory of our late friends in the SWLfest community by getting newer (and perhaps younger) acquaintances to come to future SWLfests. The SWLfest community isn't sustainable unless we do this. Over the past several years I've brought new people to every SWLfest. We can all try to do the same, and we'll be richer for it. Re: [Swlfest] Radio Technology Museum - Sunday Field Trip after SWLfest?
I've already heard from multiple SWLfesters who say they want to visit the Radio Technology Museum on Sunday. (I'll be driving Dave Marthouse there.) Just to be clear, this is not an official NASWA or SWLfest field trip; I'm just asking if people want to meet up to do this since we'll all be in the general area geeking out over radio stuff anyway. Please know there's a $7 admission fee for the InfoAge Science Center, where the Radio Technology Museum and many other related museums are located. Personally, I think that's worth spending to see and support all these amazing museum exhibits built by volunteers for that nonprofit organization. Re: [Swlfest] SWLfest reservation deadlines?
To say that the hotel reservation clerks sometimes make mistakes (usually in the hotel's favor) would be an understatement ;-) There must be an actual deadline date, and everyone should be advised what it is, both here on the SWLfest list and on the swlfest.com website. Same goes for the deadline date for buying a conference admission ticket at a lower rate than the onsite price. Maybe this info was already posted and I missed it. If so, I'd appreciate it being posted again. Re: [Swlfest] Swlfest Digest, Vol 162, Issue 6
Perhaps it would be helpful if specific instructions are posted here and on swlfest.com for exactly how to make reservations to ensure the event gets the badly needed credit for those reservations. And clarify if such reservations include a breakfast ticket. The pared-down breakfast options offered by the hotel in recent years (no more custom omelets!) may have decreased the incentive for people to pay a higher price for SWLfest-sanctioned reservations than they can buy through an aggregator (or alligator) such as Hotwire / Expedia / Google / Hotels.com / Booking.com / etc. -Ed Cummings At 08:48 PM 1/12/2020, Richard Cuff wrote: Bruce (and anyone else) -- if you do reserve a room outside of the Fest block, please send me an e-mail so I can attempt to get the room credited to our group. John's metaphor of the balloon is appropriate - if we don't meet our hotel room commitment, it would cost us more for the forum / silent auction / registration & exhibit space, which would necessitate a higher registration fee. [Swlfest] Concordia transmission artist launches a high-frequency project in Alaska
Our friend Amanda Dawn Christie, who at last year's SWLfest presented her film Specters of Shortwave and performed vocals with her theremin, will be using the HAARP transmitter next week to transmit art in SSTV, CW, and other modes on HF between 2.7 - 10 MHz. (Specific times and frequencies TBA soon.) -Ed Cummings https://www.concordia.ca/news/stories/2019/03/21/concordia-transmission-artist-launches-a-high-frequency-project-in-alaska.html Concordia transmission artist launches a high-frequency project in Alaska By <https://www.concordia.ca/news/authors/meagan-boisse.html>Meagan Boisse In the shadow of Mount Sanford, surrounded by Alaskan wilderness, youll find the most powerful radio transmitter on earth. With 180 antennas spread across 33 acres, the <https://www.gi.alaska.edu/facilities/haarp>HAARP (High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program) facility is one-of-a-kind. It was designed by the United States military, and transferred in 2015 to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, to study the powerful potential of the ionosphere an electrically charged layer of the earths atmosphere. On this remote site, scientists use a unique tool called the Ionospheric Research Instrument (IRI) to create radio-induced aurora, also known as airglow. But its never been used by a Canadian artist to transmit art until now. The IRIs man-made northern lights inspired interdisciplinary artist <http://www.amandadawnchristie.ca/>Amanda Dawn Christie to create Ghosts in the Air Glow: an upcoming transmission art project that will use the IRI to play with the liminal boundaries of outer space. I was so fascinated by these airglow experiments and the relationship between the ionosphere and radio communications I felt compelled to create an artwork specific to the site and its history, says Christie, assistant professor in Concordias <https://www.concordia.ca/finearts/studio-arts.html>Department of Studio Arts. Interdisciplinary artist Amanda Dawn Christie. | Photo by Conco Interdisciplinary artist Amanda Dawn Christie. | Photo by Concordia University She will be embedding her own encoded SSTV images, audio compositions and propagation tests into IRI experiments from March 25 to 28. The facility, which was used by the military, has an air of mystery about it and has been the subject of many conspiracy theories over the years thats something I reflected upon when creating the piece. Ghosts in the Air Glow will consist of an hour-long transmission containing eight movements, each created for a specific frequency and intended to explore different concepts related to radio science and the HAARP site itself. From Arctic wolves meeting the aurora to poetic texts written in Morse code and the NATO phonetic alphabet, the motifs covered by this transmission art work address issues related to military research, surveillance, political territories, ionospheric science, and conspiracy theories. Embedding ghosts into the airwaves The common thread weaving each segment together is the idea of the ghosts, or rather the esoteric activity that inhabits our airwaves, says Christie. She explains that when radio was first discovered in the 1800s, spiritualist movements of the era believed the souls of the dead occupied the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum. Radio communications are all around; theyre an invisible force constantly moving through us. I liked the connection made by 19th-century spiritualists between matter, energy and EM waves on both a poetic and metaphorical level, Christie adds. By embedding images and sounds into the airglow, Im also in a way embedding my own ghosts into the EM spectrum, an unseen yet highly active realm. Fallen, who is an amateur radio operator, was intrigued by Christies proposition to use the IRI to create site-specific transmission art. He agreed to open the facility to her, and when she gained backing from the <https://canadacouncil.ca/>Canada Council for the Arts, Ghosts in the Air Glow officially became the first Canadian-funded project to take place at HAARP. Art and science are often seen as separate efforts but they actually share many of the same inspirations and techniques. Im excited to see HAARP, a unique scientific instrument, used for a comparably unique artistic performance, says Fallen. Amandas project will be a valuable contribution to the 50-year collection of scientific work in the field of ionosphere radio modification, and also to the brand n

Thanks Tom! Nice job on the SWLfest program schedule PDF. The computer I'm using to correspond for this email thread doesn't have a good PDF creation tool on it right now, so that's why I asked if anyone else can make a PDF of the SWLfest schedule. Rich, would you please post a link to Tom's PDF on the SWLfest.com website and host it where people can download it for printing or copying to their tablet or smartphone? This method (posting a link to a PDF copy of the program schedule) can be used this year and in future years if you're no longer going to make a printed program available. For what it's worth, a biennial conference I help organize called HOPE (which several SWLfesters attend and speak at) hosts over a hundred talks and panels over three days, costs about the same as the SWLfest for admission, and since 1994 still includes a printed program booklet with dozens of pages. Even though it's a hacker conference whose attendees bring fancy laptops, tablets, and mobile electronic devices, we still recognize that a printed paper program is of great value to our attendees--and they appreciate it. Printed text on recyclable paper is still a very practical and useful medium in 2019. -Ed p.s. - If anyone reading this is curious about the content at HOPE, here's a listing of the 100+ talks and panels from last year's conference. Yes, definitely not 2M FM. But those hotel business frequencies might be interesting and potentially useful to monitor. I'd be surprised if no SWLfester hasn't mapped them out. David, what are these "fear room rates" you speak of? Some of the Kulpsville rooms were pretty scary (Tip: Don't use a UV lamp there to look for traces of body fluids on the bedding and rug) but I never felt fear at the DoubleTree in Plymouth Meeting--except last year when there was no power and my room was very dark. Re: [Swlfest] Article in IEEE Spectrum about SWLfest presenter Amanda Dawn Christie
Hi Dennis, The audio of the approximately one hundred HOPE Talks and Panels of 2018 <http://hope.net/schedule.html>can be downloaded free from here. There's several radio-related talks that would interest many SWLfesters. HOPE videos from 2018 aren't free yet, but can be downloaded for a small fee from <https://store.2600.com/collections/hope-downloads/>here and might be free in the future. We don't record the dozens of Workshops held at HOPE due to the lack of AV resources to do all that (recording three simultaneous speaker tracks for three long days is challenging enough.) So unfortunately Amanda's workshop was not recorded. The concert performance Amanda did at HOPE was recorded, and we're working on getting releases from all the performers before putting that online for free (probably on YouTube.) -Ed At 04:39 PM 9/29/2018, Dennis DeMarco wrote: Hey, Is Amanda's HOPE presentation online? Some SWLfesters probably get it. The article describes her documentary film project at RCI Sackville, and some of her other work. It's worth reading. At the SWLfest, Amanda was talked into presenting at <http://hope.net/schedule.html>HOPE (Hackers On Planet Earth) in July, where she performed and held a workshop (several SWLfesters presented at HOPE this year.) The editor of IEEE Spectrum attended HOPE and was intrigued enough by Amanda's workshop to want to publish an article about her work. Re: [Swlfest] Data Breaches
Dan, thanks for facilitating an alternative to Facebook for the SWLfest group. Personally, I think choosing between the social networking platforms Facebook and Google+ is like choosing between the devil and the deep blue sea (of data.) I never established a Facebook account because I never trusted its founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg--who once wrote that people who entrusted their personal data to his social networking platform are "Dumb fucks." https://www.esquire.com/uk/latest-news/a19490586/mark-zuckerberg-called-people-who-handed-over-their-data-dumb-f/ Seven years ago Wikileaks Founder Julian Assange (who I dislike personally) was interviewed by RT and quoted saying, "Facebook in particular is the most appalling spying machine that has ever been invented." He said, "Here we have the world's most comprehensive database about people, their relationships, their names, their addresses, their locations and the communications with each other, their relatives, all sitting within the United States, all accessible to U.S. intelligence. Facebook, Google, Yahoo -- all these major U.S. organizations have built-in interfaces for U.S. intelligence. It's not a matter of serving a subpoena. They have an interface that they have developed for U.S. intelligence to use." https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2011/05/wikileaks-assange-facebook-is-appalling-spying-machine/238225/ Frankly, I don't trust Alphabet (Google+) much more, so I never established a Google+ account, either. They have similar-data sharing arrangements with demonstrably untrustworthy entities, and market forces compel these corporations to exploit users' personal data because they have a legal mandate to maximize profits for shareholders. People can choose to decline these corporations' onerous Terms of Service--which frequently change and aren't honored anyway. I prefer using this SWLfest mailing list and email to exchange info with my fellow SWLfesters. It's much safer ;-) -Ed Cummings At 11:34 AM 3/21/2018, Daniel L. Re: [Swlfest] First Casting Call for the 2018 Winter SWL Fest
Indeed, it would be interesting to see a side-by-side performance comparison of the Icom IC-R8600 and the IC-R9500. I'll ask Matt Blaze if he'd be willing to bring his IC-R9500 back to next year's SWLfest (I transported it there for him.) -Ed Cummings At 03:28 PM 11/17/2017, Eric Cottrell wrote: I am looking forward to the Fest, now under 15 weeks away! I am interested in comparing it to the much more expensive Icom IC-R9500 that has graced our modest listening post in past years. 73 Eric On Wed, 15 Nov 2017 16:58:22 -0500, John Figliozzi <jfigl...@nycap.rr.com> wrote: > Yes, its (already!) that time of the year again. > > We invite one and all to be a part of the 2018 Winter SWL Fest on > March 1, 2 and 3 at the Doubletree Guest Suites in fashionable > Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. Re: [Swlfest] First Casting Call for the 2018 Winter SWL Fest
Sal, It behooves all of us to forward John's email message to anyone we think would give a good presentation at next year's SWLfest, along with a solicitation and encouragement for them to do so. Sometimes this requires gentle prodding and hand-holding, with an explanation that the SWLfest is an informal, fun event that warmly welcomes new speakers and attendees. I've been doing this for several years which has brought several good speakers to the SWLfest--some of who had never heard of the SWLfest but who are now regular 'festers. John and Rich need ALL of us to help bring in good speakers and new attendees for the SWLfest to survive and thrive. We will ALL benefit from this. It's really up to all of us. Typically, John and Rich receive more talk submissions than there's time to present, so they have to vet them all and pick the best ones each year--which is a lot of work. I've already reached out to some new people about speaking at next year's SWLfest. I hope you do the same! Re: [Swlfest] Train to Hotel
Hi Mano, There's no need for anyone at the SWLfest to coordinate your train transportation to Norristown, and your taxicab (or Uber or Lyft) ride from the nearby Norristown Transportation Center to the hotel. All the information you need is posted below. Good luck, -Ed Cummings At 11:04 PM 2/15/2017, Mano Guha wrote: Great idea, Ed! I you enjoy traveling by train, a cheaper and more interesting option is to take the SEPTA airport line from PHL airport to Philly's Jefferson Station (formerly Market East) and then transfer to the Manayunk-Norristown Line to the Norristown Transportation Center (which is a 15-min cab drive from the hotel.) The train fare for the full trip is $9.00 and you can buy your ticket from a machine on the PHL airport train platform (or for a bit more on the train.) At Jefferson Station, tell the train conductor that you're deboarding at the Norristown Transportation Center. Here's the URL for SEPTA's "transportation planner" which can create a train itinerary for you: http://www.septa.org/m/maps/trip.html From the Norristown Transportation Center you can take Uber or Lyft for about $15 (or a taxicab for a bit more) to the hotel. (Or if you have a friend at the hotel with a car, they might be willing to make the short trip to pick you up ;-) If you're coming from Philadelphia's 30th Street Station from anywhere, for only $7.00 (pay on the train) you can take the Manayunk-Norristown Line to the Norristown Transportation Center, and then take Uber or Lyft for about $15 (or a taxicab for a bit more) to the hotel. [Swlfest] SWLfest group room rate still available via social engineering workaround
If you missed yesterday's deadline on the SWLfest group room rate, don't despair...there's a workaround to still get the $109 rate instead of the $132 rate they charge now: First, sign up for the free Hilton Honors program (which is a good idea anyway to get free hotel perks) and write down your new HHonors number: https://secure3.hilton.com/en/hh/customer/join/joinHHonors.htm Call Reservations at (800)445-8667 and make your reservation at the current rate of $132.00. Give them your HHonors number. Get a Reservation Confirmation Number. Then call the hotel at (610)834-8300 and ask to speak with their Sales Manager. Tell the Hotel Sales Manager that you're a Hilton Honors member and that the block of rooms is sold out for the "NASWA Shortwave conference." Ask them if they'd be kind enough to retroactively apply the $109 sold out block room rate to your reservation (give them your reservation number and HHonors numbers.) The Sales Manager will almost certainly grant your request. They did for me ;-) Good luck, Ed Cummings ___ Swlfest mailing list Swlfest@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/swlfest To unsubscribe: Send an E-mail to swlfest-requ...@hard-core-dx.com?subject=unsubscribe, or visit the URL shown above. [Swlfest] Broken link to airport shuttle website on swlfest.com
The link on the SWLfest website to the airport shuttle is wrong. It takes you to a domain name squatter. The hotel told me Tropiano is now their airport shuttle operator. [Swlfest] FREE antique Zenith radio/phonographs to a good home (Philly area)
Hi Everyone, Before I put these two antique Zenith radio/phonographs up on Freecycle.com for a friend, I thought I'd offer them here to any SWLfest folks who might be interested. A very old physician's estate was liquidated and she owned two beautiful Zenith entertainment centers--one shortwave with the Rotor Wavemagnet antenna, and the other mediumwave only--and both have Zenith phonographs. I told my friend who inherited these units to not apply power to them lest the caps explode, so they're ready for reconditioning. The SWLfest mailing list won't allow large image attachments, but if anyone on the list in the Philly area is seriously interested, I can email you pictures and facilitate your acquiring these units for free. The present owner is pregnant and due today(!) and needs more room in her small house, so she's looking to find a good home for these classic Zenith radio/phonos. They're much too nice to discard as junk. Please email me off-list if you're seriously interested in taking both of these units, which appear to have been well cared for. Re: [Swlfest] BBG to go away?
Maybe a President Trump, who arguably has more direct experience in broadcast media than any previous U.S. President (Ronald Reagan not withstanding), will appoint an International Broadcasting CEO to develop a media network similar to RT (Russia Today) to play catch-up with his pal Putin. RT has been a very successful propaganda outlet. I can envision a President Trump wanting to be a regular face on such international broadcasts. He's very media-savvy and loves the spotlight. [Swlfest] Radio Caroline applies for broadcast license
If Radio Caroline get a mediumwave license from OFCOM, I hope they also apply for a shortwave license shortly afterwards. -Ed Cummings http://www.waterford-news.ie/2016/11/30/radio-caroline-aims-to-rock-radio-waves-again/ Radio Caroline aims to rock radio waves again Wednesday, November 30, 20 The famous ship-based pirate radio station Radio Caroline has applied for an AM waveband licence from Ofcom. Peter Moore, who runs Radio Caroline, wants to broadcast from its ship the MV Ross Revenge on the River Blackwater in Essex. He hopes to hear the outcome of the application next year, the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Marine Broadcasting Offences Act that was intended to scupper the pirate broadcasters. The station, immortalised in Richard Curtis film The Boat That Rocked, was founded in 1964 to play pop music all day in a time where broadcasting was dominated by the BBC and pop was played for an hour a week. After the law was passed in 1967, Radio Caroline continued to broadcast until the Ross Revenge was shipwrecked off the Kent coast in 1991. Mr Moore said the vessel is "mostly fixed" and open to visitors. Radio Caroline currently operates as an internet and digital radio station, with many shows broadcast from the Ross Revenge, which has a gadget fitted to its wheelhouse to give it a 4G signal, and also from its presenters' home studios. "We think it would be very fitting that, 50 years after the law intended to silence us once and for all, we show that it didn't work," said Mr Moore. The proposed AM signal would serve Essex and Suffolk, an area served by the station in its early years, with the transmitter based on land and connected to the studio on the ship and presenters' homes. "The Suffolk application is in hope of returning to what was always our heartland," added Mr Moore. "We would broadcast on AM just like long ago to entertain the people who grew up with Caroline and maybe cannot listen just now. "The presenters would be in part the same ones they listened to from our ship at sea." An Ofcom spokesman confirmed an application from Radio Caroline was being reviewed. ___ Swlfest mailing list Swlfest@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/swlfest To unsubscribe: Send an E-mail to swlfest-requ...@hard-core-dx.com?subject=unsubscribe, or visit the URL shown above. Re: [Swlfest] Slightly OT: Article featuring dedicated Fester Ed Cummings
Hi Rich, In my opinion, the Philly Inquirer has gone way overboard with website ads like the one that prevented you from reading the entire article about WPPM-LP 106.5 MHz FM in Philadelphia. That portable radio you saw a photo of me using in that article is my Eton Satellit that I won at a recent SWLfest. It has a hot FM receiver and had no trouble picking up WPPM from a bench in Washington Square Park. It also has a RDS decoder and I'm trying to convince WPPM station management to implement RDS so casual listeners can see what station they're listening to. RDS could also be used more creatively than that. I lament that RDS isn't used anywhere near how it could be used here in the states. Over a decade ago in eastern Germany I monitored a Saturday night techno dance show (on an FM station I can't recall the name of) with my Sangean ATS-909 and marvelled at the DJ's creative use of RDS to send shout-outs and other real-time comments to listeners. It was a perfect melding of forward-facing radio broadcast technologies. Cool! -Ed Cummings At 07:04 PM 8/10/2016, Richard D'Angelo wrote: Interesting picture of Ed tuning a portable radio too. Re: [Swlfest] Bluegrass could disappear from Washington airwaves
Hi Thomas, I remember "WiFi 92" in Philly very well. University of Pennsylvania's WXPN-FM later did a bluegrass show, but that was cancelled when they brought in a commercial Program Director named Mark Fuerst. Then WHYY-FM had Gene Shay due a bluegrass show, but that was also cancelled. But there's hope for bluegrass in Philly: WPPM-LP (People Powered Media) is a community LPFM that went on the air last weekend after a good year of planning I was involved with. There's room in the schedule for a real bluegrass show, so anyone knows anyone in the area who'd be willing and able to produce it, please put them in touch with me. We're also looking to fill a GM position, so if anyone on the list knows anyone in the Philadelphia area who might be interested in that, let me know ASAP. Re: [Swlfest] The Fight for the Future of NPR
When NPR moved their Weekend All Things Considered (Saturday and Sunday) production from DC to Culver City, California, I knew something was afoot. They put Rachel Martin on as Sunday host, who is doubly painful to listen to as she presents so much 'fluff' and not much news for an hour. NPR News has fallen far over the decades. It's also noteworthy that NPR successfully lobbied the FCC in the late 70's to phase out low-power "Class D" school/university/community FM broadcasting (established in 1938) so NPR could grab those 20 "reserved band" spectrum channels from 88.1 to 91.9 MHz for its own growing network. NPR did great harm to diverse community radio across U.S. and replaced much of it with their cookie-cutter and now mind-numbing programming. -Ed Cummings At 09:18 AM 4/12/2016, Fred Zalupski wrote: Thomas, Good post. Re: [Swlfest] Scanner Forum Session
SWLFest speaker slots are very limited and valuable. So I think any person who wants one should be required to submit a detailed proposal themselves to the SWLfest organizers stating specifically what they'd like to talk about. Automatically granting a SWLfest speaking slot to a group of people that no member of has lifted a finger to step up and submit a detailed proposal for seems a like a waste of precious time resources at the SWLfest. I pay for my SWLfest ticket to hear informative content that someone took the time to adequately plan a presentation of. If there's a scanner talk then I'd like to hear a detailed presentation about new developments in the hobby, such as how new low-cost SDR's (like the SDRPlay) and free software are being developed and used by hobbyists to demodulate and record APCO25.DMR/Mototrbo/NXDN/ProVoice/etc and other digital modulation schemes being used by more and more public safety agencies. If no member of the 'Scanner Scum' (a very knowledgeable group of people, BTW) is willing and able promptly submit a detailed proposal for the good use of a valuable time slot, then I'd like to see that time slot used more productively by someone else. Just because something is a "tradition" doesn't mean it's in the best interest of the SWLFest. Better content will bring in more paid attendees, which are badly needed for the survival of this wonderful event. I'd be interested in reading anyone else's opinions about this. The SWLfest has some excellent content, but should any of its valuable speaking slots be reserved for any group or person who hasn't bothered to submit a good plan to use it? -Ed Cummings At 01:50 PM 1/13/2016, Mark Meece wrote: Neither Tom Swisher or myself are able to make it to the Fest this year. Living in an extremely noisy environment in a suburban area just 10 minutes or so outside of Montreal, a city of now about 4 million people (and only about 5 minutes away from me!), Alan has had incredible success over the years digging out signals on longwave for example. He has often called me to say the band is open at his place and I can hear the incredible signals he is picking up over the phone! I tune in the frequencies here, just 5 minutes away and I don't hear a thing! His secret to success seems to be his use of home-made small vertical antennas! Most people think success on longwave (not just broadcast stations, but beacons as well), is very long, beverage style antennas. Alan has succeeded in proving that's not necessary and it is possible with very short, easy to construct and install antennas to have great success. He has also spent many, many hours digging out all sorts of odd and interesting signals in the HF spectrum 25 MHz and up. A number of years back, he was able to find a network of FM stations being used by ski-lift gondolas at a French Alps ski resort using the French service Radio Neige. He has also logged a number of television studio to transmitter link signals (STL's) throughout the US that use 26 MHz FM mode Comrex transmitters. He was also recently able to pull out the experimental signals from a Moscow based technical university, with students broadcasting once a week. He religiously checks for activity in the lows and highs of the HF spectrum and through his creative and unique work at designing and constructing antennas he has been able to come up with some amazing DX catches in areas of the spectrum that few DXers spend much time in. The low periods of the sunspot cycle and the increasing noise floor generated by all the weird and wonderful RF generating devices around us have made his DXing efforts more challenging, but Alan looks at it as a new challenge, sort of a cat and mouse game. So, Alan and I have discussed it, and we're thinking that we'd like to propose a new forum at Winterfest 2016, perhaps called something like "DXing the Lows and Highs of the HF Spectrum". I will be working on a audio/visual presentation of photos of his equipment, antennas, etc. as well as some recordings of the signals he hears (providing we can catch some in the next couple of months! Alan is a little bit nervous in front of crowds and seems a little unsure of being able to fill the hour, but I have agreed to help him out and run the graphics, photos, sound clips, etc. He has done my radio show on a number of occasions and is aware of just how quickly a half-hour goes by on the radio. I told him that giving the talk at Winterfest is much the same, and once questions start flowing, it will be over before he knows it. So, if you think this would be of interest to our audience, we should be able to pull it off. I think it would be something unique for Winterfest. Let me know your thoughts. [Swlfest] Worlds first all-digital radio on a chip
This new technology seems to have promise for leading to better, smaller, and cheaper radios. -Ed Cummings http://www.cambridgenetwork.co.uk/news/first-all-digital-radio-transmitter/ Cambridge Consultants demonstrates a world first in radio design 3/03/2015 Technology innovation firm Cambridge Consultants has successfully completed initial trials of the worlds first fully digital radio transmitter a turning point in wireless design and a real enabler for the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G technology. Its a radio built purely from computing power, using the same familiar digital technology youd find in a computer microprocessor in your home or office. Unlike software-defined radio (SDR), its not a mixture of analogue and digital components for the first time, the radio is completely digital, which can enable new ways of using spectrum intelligently. The innovation is set to be hugely disruptive, like a previous Cambridge Consultants breakthrough the development of the first single-chip Bluetooth radio, which led to the spinout of the global short-range wireless and audiovisual giant CSR. The latest breakthrough codenamed Pizzicato unlocks the potential of the IoT. It opens the door to a new dynamic way in which the predicted 100 billion IoT devices can operate together in a crowded radio spectrum. And it will enable the creation of 5G systems, with multiple radios and antennas. The Pizzicato digital radio transmitter consists of an integrated circuit outputting a single stream of bits, and an antenna with no conventional radio parts or digital-to-analogue converter. Patented algorithms perform the necessary ultra-fast computations in real time, making it possible for standard digital technology to generate high-frequency radio signals directly. Our first trial of the technology has created 14 simultaneous cellular base station signals, said Monty Barlow, director of wireless technology at Cambridge Consultants. But it is the potential which is so exciting. Like mainstream microprocessing, a Pizzicato-based radio would directly benefit from Moores Law shrinking in cost, size and power consumption with each new generation of silicon fabrication. If were going to get high-speed broadband to every mobile phone in the world, well need lots of tiny, high-performance radios in those phones. The radios will be squashed together in a way that analogue just doesnt tolerate. Whereas a Pizzicato-like digital radio can follow Moores Law to smaller size and lower power consumption. It could also be programmed to generate almost any combination of signals at any carrier frequencies, nimbly adapting its behaviour in a way that is impossible in conventional radios. It is early days for this technology but we believe radio design has reached a turning point. In recent decades, wireless design teams such as Cambridge Consultants have employed extensive digital techniques in radios and such SDRs have provided a tenfold improvement in the data rate that can be squeezed into a radio channel. But a more dramatic improvement is needed to cope with the growth in mobile broadband and the IoT. Good radio spectrum is a scarce resource only low frequencies (1GHz or lower) propagate well over distance or through walls, so they are in great demand. Greater efficiency requires the use of dynamic or cognitive wireless techniques to sense the radio environment and switch parameters on the fly. This could give access to more of the estimated 90% of the allocated spectrum which is not in use at any one time. Making use of the higher carrier frequencies of 10GHz and beyond, however, will require techniques such as meshing and beamforming to circumvent the inherently poor range and the analogue parts of radios are becoming an increasing bottleneck. Crowding 50 analogue radios together on one chip, switching their operational parameters every few microseconds and expecting them to work at 60GHz is an analogue designers nightmare, said Barlow. With Pizzicato, we have created a glimpse of future disruptive technology a radio built purely from computing power. Cambridge Consultants has one of the worlds largest independent wireless development teams, with more than 120 experts working in areas ranging from ultra-low-power short-range wireless connectivity to global satellite communication. During its 55-year history, the company has helped clients develop technology ranging from the worlds first wireless implanted pacing system to the ground-to-air radio system controlling air traffic over the majority of the planet. Re: [Swlfest] 2015 Forums Schedule Updated
Eric, Yes, please bring your Elad FDM-S2 and laptop computer to the SWLfest. I'm sure quite a few festers would like to see and hear it in action. We'll have a monitoring post set up in the presidential suite (hospitality suite) with rooftop access to antennas, and a multicoupler. If anyone has a decent antenna switch, please bring it! Thanks much, Ed Cummings At 11:55 AM 1/21/2015, Eric Cottrell wrote: Hello, I really like the Elad FDM-S2. I am thinking of bringing it to the fest as well. Some SDR hardware also provide a standard API through an External Interface DLL. The allows usage of the same hardware with multiple PC SDR programs, and the same PC SDR program with multiple SDR hardware. One recent thread on the Elad list discussed using a RDS decoder with the Elad FDM-S2 to receive FM stations via Meteor Scatter. The DXer records a 5 MHz chuck of the FM spectrum, and plays it back multiple times looking for the busts. A program like RDS Spy is used to see if the RDS can be decoded to identify the station. 73 Eric On Wed, 21 Jan 2015 07:51:24 +1100, Mark Fahey mfa...@bigpond.com wrote: Hey Eric, Thanks for the Elad links and info, I think I will walk your journey as well - listen to the sample files and then I'm sure I will be spending some money on a new box! The Radio on the Road talks by our unnoted world traveler has great pictures and sounds of various places in the world. Always an interesting talk. I will be bringing an USB drive to Thomas' and Mark's talk. Before I bought my Elad FDM-S2, I downloaded the software and 4GB! of spectrum recordings from DK8OK. I was able to figure out the software before I got the radio. It was interesting to hear what listening was like in Europe, like no WWV on 10 MHz. Video highlighting some of the stations in the DK80K files. http://sdr.eladit.com/Sample%20wav-files%20how%20to%20and%20applications/DK8OK/Video/elad_fdms2_6mhz.mp4 Elad FDM-S2 Software http://sdr.eladit.com/FDM-sw2%20Software/ Sample Files http://sdr.eladit.com/Sample%20wav-files%20how%20to%20and%20applications/DK8OK/10MHzCF_5MHzWidth_1700UTC/ I did a talk at the fest years ago about HF Utility listening and played recordings of some of the various modes active at the time. Now there are even more digital modes. It is amazing how you can recognize digital signals by how they sound. I can identify various trunked radio control channels on VHF/UHF/800 by how they sound as well. 73 Eric On Mon, 19 Jan 2015 13:31:06 -0500, John Figliozzi jfigl...@nycap.rr.com wrote: Correcting some typos and adding info on a Friday night broadcast on WRMI. ___ Swlfest mailing list Swlfest@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/swlfest To unsubscribe: Send an E-mail to swlfest-requ...@hard-core-dx.com?subject=unsubscribe, or visit the URL shown above. [Swlfest] Designing Wheel-Tuned, Digital-Display Radios with Next-Generation Radio ICs
Today I received this interesting applications note from Mouser Electronics which specifically mentions some technical challenges that designers of AM and shortwave radios face using DSP technologies. This paper might interest some SWLfest list subscribers. http://www.mouser.com/applications/next-gen-radio-ics-audio/?utm_medium=emailutm_source=january2015utm_campaign=cm-audio-enutm_content=article2rm Cheers, Ed Cummings ___ Swlfest mailing list Swlfest@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/swlfest To unsubscribe: Send an E-mail to swlfest-requ...@hard-core-dx.com?subject=unsubscribe, or visit the URL shown above. Re: [Swlfest] Access to PC projector for Fest?
That was fast! Will someone be able to bring a mobile internet hotspot so we'll have internet connectivity in the conference room, exhibit/banquet room, and lounge area? Or maybe the hotel has free WiFi now? If nobody else is already planning to bring one, I might be able to borrow one that uses Sprint's (formerly Clear's) WiMAX network and bring it. But it's limited to 8 simultaneous connections. Interestingly, Clear's old area headquarters were right at the bottom of the street leading to the hotel. Now it's vacant since Sprint bought Clear. That WiMAX network is scheduled for sunset by the end of 2015 (replaced by Sprint LTE.) -Ed Cummings At 05:19 PM 1/14/2015, Richard Cuff wrote: Request fulfilled...thanks!
