start from scratch again. However, when I connect my iPhone, it shows 330
songs on my phone, If I add new music, it gets appended to the music that
is already on my phone. I don't want to have to arrow through hundereds
of songs to try to find the ones that are currently selected and I am

Therefore, I am wondering if anyone has a easy way to remove all the

That said, for product developers, $99 annually for the package to develop

distribution (only payable if you charge for your product), is actually
quite inexpensive. I have a friend who owns an oracle application

because her business has become so successful. Every year her required
licensing fees go up as they are based on her success.

Well, anybody can pay Apple's $99 annual cost to join the developer program
and become a beta tester. It is really up to us to become beta testers if we
want to catch, report, and influence Apple during the final testing /
development phase of each iOS development cycle. Considering how small our
population is, if we become beta testers at the same percentages as sighted
people, only 0.5% of the beta testers are testing for VoiceOver
accessibility. The odds are that the percentage of blind beta testers is
 even less than 0.5%.

Keyboard issue with IOs6

2012-09-22 Thread Pablo Morales

Hi all.
Well, I found a problem with the IOs 6, and I didn't see this problem with
the other versions of Ios. I have a bluetooth keyboard that I bought around
1 year ago, but it is the older version, is not the version that appeared
when the iPhone 4s appeared. Any way, my bluetooth keyboard has been
working with all IOs versions 4, and IOs 5, but with the IOs 6, it has some
problems, for example the multimedia functions is not working all time. I
can't increase or decrease the volume, I can't play anything with the F8 key
either. I don't know yet what else I can't to do, but I would like if IOs
change the functions or what happen, but I can't handle my keyboard like
before this update.

Thanks
Pablo

iOS6 Podcast App

2012-09-22 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
Hi All,

Have downloaded and installed the iOS6 Podcast App, all my podcasts have been
moved to that App from Music.

Two questions; firstly, is it now necessary within iTunes on my Mac to still
have them synced, or can I uncheck that box…

Secondly, within this new improved app, said in jest, there appears to be less
functionality, for example' the one feature I insist on, double speed playback.
Where on earth has this control gone? Does anyone know as this is driving me
mad.

I tried to drop back to the old way of doing things, by uninstalling Podcasts,
however, they do not reappear in the Music App.

Any ideas on either front gratefully received.

thanks

Okay, got my iPhone5 early this morning. And connected my bt keyboard that
I bought about 2 months ago from speed dots. It connects just fine, but if
you turn it off while your not using it, you have to authorize each time
with a different 4 digit code each time. I've done this 4 times, just to
make sure it wasn't me. And it's still in the list of bt devices, but when
you double tap not connected button so it will connect, thats when your
presented a diferent 4 digits to pair it to your phone. Has anyone else who
is using this keyboard experienced this?

Re: Passbook issues

2012-09-22 Thread Scott Howell
I actually tried the workaround and it did work for me. However, it takes a few
steps and involves turning off the option for automatically setting the clock,
moving your device ahead a year, attempting to activate the button in the
Passbook app, and setting the clock back to automatic time setting.
Needless to say that there are few apps available, so waiting for Apple to fix
the issue makes more sense. :)
The problem in performing the steps is you have all sorts of errors popping up
on the screen which seems to cause no harm, but you have to be aware of it. If
you really want to try this just search for the article on Google. And keep in
mind it may not solve the problem for you.

iPHone5, EarPods Unlocking

2012-09-22 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
All,

I'm not sure if this is iOS6 or the iPHone5, I have the new iPhone5 with the
included EarPods, all works well, still trying to decide if I like the sound
quality more than the Bose iE2 headset I also own…

One issue I've noted and am curious if it is the phone, software or the headset…

When listening to music, if the phone is locked, by pressing the volume up or
down, the phone will unlock and announce the time.

Two questions; firstly, is it now necessary within iTunes on my Mac to still

Secondly, within this new improved app, said in jest, there appears to be
less functionality, for example' the one feature I insist on, double speed

I tried to drop back to the old way of doing things, by uninstalling

Any ideas on either front gratefully received.

ios 6 calendar bug, no events?

2012-09-22 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear listers,

Can any of yu confirm the following? When moving your finger across the month
view of calendar on ios 6, then all my days seem to be empty. However, I'm sure
I put in all kinds of events. When I then tap a day that says no events, and I
then look in the bottom part of the screen, all my events for that day do show
up, even though the month view announces that day as empty. Can you reproduce
this? I'd rather not bug apple accessibility, unless I'm sure I found a real
bug, and not something I don't understand. Please try it if you use the ios 6
calendar. I'm interested to hear your findings.

This is beyond annoying, and I'm wondering if others have experienced it at

Where to app was: Do the new maps know bus and similar stops?

Hi David
Thanks for the info. It works here in Germany as well.
One question. Is there a way to get the voiceover focus into the popup
menu for the apps from which to tget the turn by turn navigation? When
I'm opening the route dialogue I can only flick around it. When I'm
touching objects in the menu they'll be anounced, but flicking doesn't
work. Is this a bug or is there something I can do?

do not disturb, what is the entire story?

2012-09-22 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear listers,

Since ios 6, we can now keep calls from coming through, if we need that. But

no app sounds at all, other than my wake up alarm. Is this possible?

Setting the mute switch to off, will that also surpress the alarm? Does do not
disturb mode have anything to do with this? What is the complete story here? I
don't quite understand this yet, and to wake up, I stil use my old Nokia. I'd
like to use my iphone for it though. Any additional explanation is appreciated.

Hi Scott,

Nice tip. I switched from month view to day view and back, and suddenly, the

Re: do not disturb, what is the entire story?

2012-09-22 Thread Scott Howell
Paul,

The do not disturb feature does not impact the alarm. ALl this feature does is
prevent inbound calls, text messages, e-mails, etc. I gather it does not turn
off the wifi or cellular radios, but instead I guess it temporarily blocks
these connections unless certain conditions are met. I have not read any
articles that go into extensive detail on how the feature works, but my
comments are based on my own speculations. Now if anyone knows of an article
that explains this in detail (that is a credible source) that would be great. I
almost think of DND as more a firewall that blocks certain connections unless
there is an exception. So, no issues with the alarm that I have heard of or
experienced.

my iPhone around with other cell phones with no problem so I'm not quite sure
why I'm concerned about this but the questions seems like it should be asked.

(2) Can anybody recommend a case or some kind of protection for the 4S or 5
that doesn't bulk them up and doesn't slow down accessing the screen and
controls significantly? I know some of you may be shocked that I've always
carried my iPhones naked except for a screen protector from 3gs on but I admit
I really like them that way. I've had no problem but I admit that is more risky
in some situations than in others.

(3) Either as a case or in addition to a case, can anybody recommend something
i can carry the iPhones in that will keep them from getting wet in rain or
being damaged if I trip or fall outside but so I don't have to dig in my purse
to find them. I suppose a logical idea would be something like a fanny pack
which I may actually have around here but can anybody recommend any other
solution? Part of my problem is that I use my phone to take notes in church or
other meetings and if I don't have a pocket I have to prop my purse close
enough for the iPhone to stay in there while I have earphones in my ears and am
using a bluetoothe keyboard.

This topic may seem kind of trivial but I'm just wondering if somebody has come
up with really good solutions that might satisfy me. Again, I really do like
the feeling of the plain phones in my hand so I don't want to enclose them in
something that totally takes that feel away. While I imagine i'd have to have a
case for each phone separately if I decide to go with an actual case, as far as
carrying it would be nice to have the two in the same pouch or holder. I
sometimes use the Apple Wireless keyboard with them but also use the Iogear
multilink mini bluetooth keyboard a lot but putting either of those in a
carrying bag with the phones would mean I'd have to have something
significantly larger and I don't as much mind digging in my purse for a
keyboard as digging for my iPhones.

I do know the risks of using an iPhone naked so please don't send me emails
about how dangerous it is not to have a case though I would understand and
appreciate your concerns.

Thanks.

Passbook, and the various Voice Over fixes, but for the tweaks,
capabilities, and other areas of the iPhone which jailbreaking has
offered me I'm good for now.

I've backed up my shsh blobs just in case, but I'm set. If you want
to upgrade when the iOS 6 jailbreak is out, then I'd recommend
getting the app called xbackup from cydia. It will backup the list of
jb packages as well as their layout on the home screen if I remember
correctly. I don't think it backs up any actual data, but the normal
 iPhone backup will do this.

 Good luck.

If I wait to update to IOS 6 until it's jail broken, what's the

Will I lose anything or are their any other precautions I should take?

If I don't want to wait, what can I do to get up to IOS 6, just back

Like I said, I've been Googling a bit, so don't hesitate to just

This seems to happen every few minutes, I'm jjust using my own wifi,

Is there any way to suppress these screens and have this done in the

I wanted something not as bulky as a defender that still provided decent

VO focus in email lists

I think I have noticed a not issue with the VO focus in email lis since
updating to IOS 6. in 5.1, once you had read an email, activating the back

you closed was some way down. This means you have to swipe right werepossibly

Reporting bugs to Apple accessibility

2012-09-22 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi, how many bugs can you report to Apple accessibility at once? Do you have to
email them each one separately? I have 3 to report but before I email I wanted
to check.
I am loving iOS six! It is much quicker and apart from a few minor issues it is
great. I particularly like how you don't have to double tap the more numbers,
shift, delete, etc any more, makes typing much quicker… My dictation was very
slow yesterday, but it seems to have improved… And Siri seems to be generally
more responsive too.

Re: VO focus in email lists

2012-09-22 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Yes, there is a general focus problem with VO and iOS six and a few apps. It's
one of the bugs I intend to report. I noticed it in email too, and also in
Twitter and particularly with edit fields. I thought at first with twitter, it
was Twitter itself, but after you've been in and read a tweet or an article or
reply to something, it puts you back at the top of your tweets, very annoying
if you read your timeline backwards as I do. Also when you are wanting to go in
to an edit field, although it says editing, the focus seems to be on the cancel
button, so if you are dictating it is fine, you can press dictate and it will
work, but if you want to type, you have to swipe to make sure you're in the
edit box. When swiping sometimes, it will move to the status bar rather than
swiping through. Additionally, it seems to jump, so when you are editing what
you have written, it will put new things not where you wanted them to go: this
is extremely irritating!(Though I have only noticed this last problem in
twitter, when I am trying to select someone to mention, it moves, it doesn't
seem to happen when editing a message in mail, so perhaps this is just a
Twitter problem only). If anyone can reproduce this in particular, that would
be good.
In messages, it seems to be putting you on the messages tab at the start of
the app rather than near the message you want to read.

Dear listers,

Since ios 6, we can now keep calls from coming through, if we need that. But
how do I handle the situation where I want to use my alarm on the phone to
wake me up? While I'm sleeping, I only want the alarm to sound, and no calls
at all, no app sounds at all, other than my wake up alarm. Is this possible?

Setting the mute switch to off, will that also surpress the alarm? Does do
not disturb mode have anything to do with this? What is the complete story
here? I don't quite understand this yet, and to wake up, I stil use my old
Nokia. I'd like to use my iphone for it though. Any additional explanation
is appreciated.

First of all, I know that lots of times when you switch phones, bluetooth

telling the phone to forget the device, and then re-pairing it again?
also, before you re-pair, turn bluetooth off and back on again. So basically,
you want to pair it from scratch; clean slate so-to-speak.
Beyond that, I don't know what could cause that bug. Our iPhone 5 is still on
back order and not supposed to arrive until the beginning of October. I might
have something more useful for you once we've had the opportunity to pair it
with one of the mini bluetooth keyboards.
In the meantime, please let me know if you have success with this.

Okay, got my iPhone5 early this morning. And connected my bt keyboard that I
bought about 2 months ago from speed dots. It connects just fine, but if you
turn it off while your not using it, you have to authorize each time with a
different 4 digit code each time. I've done this 4 times, just to make sure it
wasn't me. And it's still in the list of bt devices, but when you double tap
not connected button so it will connect, thats when your presented a
diferent 4 digits to pair it to your phone. Has anyone else who is using this
keyboard experienced this?

Inadvertently Syncing Apps

2012-09-22 Thread Suzanne Wilson
Hi,

I would like to transfer a song to my daughter's iPod. It's now in my iTunes
library. When I connect her iPod, I check sync music and the place where I
only pick certain songs to be transferred manually. The problem is that the
iPod starts to sync all of my apps even though syncing apps isn't even checked.
As a result, she gets tons of apps she doesn't want and, what's worse, her
capacity becomes filled. AS a result, there isn't enough space to transfer the
one song she wants. How do I get around this very frustrating issue? Thanks.

Information for those wanting to use the original Apple youtube app on ios6

2012-09-22 Thread Alex Wallis

Hi list,
I am not running ios6 yet, but just noticed the following entry in cydia
that could be of interest to users running ios6 when a jailbreak becomes
available.
There is an entry on the insanelyi repository someone has grabbed a copy
of apples own youtube app that was included in ios6 betas and made it
available.
I guess this means that once a jailbreak for ios6 becomes available
those who want to can install it and get the original apple app back.

I may do just that.
It looks likely a jailbreak for ios6 will be released at some point in
the future, as a tweet was posted last night from someone claiming to
have already jailbroken it.
Though even if this is correct, it is still likely to be a while before
one is ready for public release.

I hope you find the above information useful,
Alex.

Re: Four Email Questions

2012-09-22 Thread Garth Humphreys
Yes, calendar is the same. That is you can add your gmail or windows live
calendar to the list of available calendars on your device. This is the same
with notes and contacts, etc. This can be really handy for instances where you
want a shared calendar and a private calendar. For example I have my wives mail
account on my phone but have her mail and contacts turned off. I have calendar
turned on though and this way I can view whats happening for our family on her
calendar. Your iCloud account also supports this of course. Each of the
different services i.e. hotmail, gmail, iCloud and others support some or all
of the features. In some cases like gmail, the available features will depend
on whether you have it setup as exchange or with the gmail defaults.

Re: ios 6 calendar bug, no events?

2012-09-22 Thread Marc Rocheleau
Hey there,

I've found that if you flick date-by-date instead of sliding your
finger to the date, it shows that there is an event on the days were
there is an event scheduled. If you slide over the event before using
the flicking method however, it'll still show no events on a day where
there is one or more scheduled. It's definitely a bug and an odd one
at that. If you go back to the previous month and then return to the
one you slid your finger on to find dates, they will all show events
properly again if you only flick to navigate.

So it's manageable but still doesn't work properly -- I'd definitely
report it to apple's accessibility team.

Re: Carrying iPhones Around

2012-09-22 Thread Rob Harris
A decent purse with mulitple pockets would get round one pproblem as you
oculd put them in their own special pocket and nothing else. I did that at
Uni' years ago with much bigger kit than current phones.

There was a thread here of a company that almost advertised on one of these
lists, offering a kind of bag or pouch with a neck cord. They got a mixed
response, but those who liked, swore by them. The rest swore at them I

Subject: Carrying iPhones Around

I've always carried my iPhones in my pocket when I have a pocket when at
home and in a purse when I go out. I've been using a screen protector
(tactile) on the 4S. But I'm wondering about the following now that I have
two:

(1) Is there any danger of the two phones scratching each other. I've
carried my iPhone around with other cell phones with no problem so I'm not
quite sure why I'm concerned about this but the questions seems like it
should be asked.

(2) Can anybody recommend a case or some kind of protection for the 4S or 5
that doesn't bulk them up and doesn't slow down accessing the screen and
controls significantly? I know some of you may be shocked that I've always
carried my iPhones naked except for a screen protector from 3gs on but I
admit I really like them that way. I've had no problem but I admit that is
more risky in some situations than in others.

(3) Either as a case or in addition to a case, can anybody recommend
something i can carry the iPhones in that will keep them from getting wet in
rain or being damaged if I trip or fall outside but so I don't have to dig
in my purse to find them. I suppose a logical idea would be something like a
fanny pack which I may actually have around here but can anybody recommend
any other solution? Part of my problem is that I use my phone to take notes
in church or other meetings and if I don't have a pocket I have to prop my
purse close enough for the iPhone to stay in there while I have earphones in
my ears and am using a bluetoothe keyboard.

This topic may seem kind of trivial but I'm just wondering if somebody has
come up with really good solutions that might satisfy me. Again, I really do
like the feeling of the plain phones in my hand so I don't want to enclose
them in something that totally takes that feel away. While I imagine i'd
have to have a case for each phone separately if I decide to go with an
actual case, as far as carrying it would be nice to have the two in the same
pouch or holder. I sometimes use the Apple Wireless keyboard with them but
also use the Iogear multilink mini bluetooth keyboard a lot but putting
either of those in a carrying bag with the phones would mean I'd have to
have something significantly larger and I don't as much mind digging in my
purse for a keyboard as digging for my iPhones.

I do know the risks of using an iPhone naked so please don't send me emails
about how dangerous it is not to have a case though I would understand and
appreciate your concerns.

Thanks.

I appreciate all of this information but there is one thing I still don't
understand. I still cannot getVO to read the preview

pane. Someone said flick right or left; that only moves me to the next message.
Holding my finger on the message simply produces the hint about the Action
options. And yes, I have a number of lines specified.

Hi Sandy,

Just to add to Richard’s and Jeff’s answers, the 3-finger pull down to refresh
is part of the new “Action” rotor setting which means the gesture is available
if your rotor is set to “Actions”. Please note you don’t really have to do
anything to set it since the “Action” setting is the default rotor settings
when you open mail and are in the list of emails. You can do a single finger
swipe down or up to go to “Delete”, then simply double tap and the message is
deleted. You can, of course, move the rotor away from Actions to, for example,
characters if you want to use the flick down to read somebody’s name/email
address letter by letter.

Also, regarding your question about that word you couldn’t understand, anytime
this happens if you set the rotor to characters you can review what Voiceover
just said letter by letter simply by flicking down with a single finger and it
will read letter by letter.

Sieghard

Hints enabled and am holding my finger on the message long enough to hear the
“hint, “slide up or down to select the custom action.”

click it and then I find choices like, Mail, Calendars, notes, archived

3. Below these there is a heading that says something like,
“phase deleted message in your All Mail folder.” I can’t quite tell what the

4. If one chooses the manual setting under Fetch New Data, , how does
one then fetch messages manually if there is no longer a Refresh button in

Re: ios 6 calendar bug, no events?

2012-09-22 Thread Scott Howell
No it does not render the Calendar app useless; it just makes it annoying.
Useless would imply that no workaround exists and you could not access any of
the functionality. As I have already stated, simply switching from month view
to day view and back will be the workaround for now. I and I am sure others
have filed the issue with APple via accessibil...@appel.com and it will be
addressed.

Re: Reporting bugs to Apple accessibility

 Thanks.

Sandy,
Flick left or right to the message and do not touch the screen again. You
will here the subject, the date, how many messages in the thread and a

The trick is to be patient and not touch the screen again.
having said that, it seems like some messages do not read the preview until

have to do anything to set it since the Action setting is the default
rotor settings when you open mail and are in the list of emails. You can do
a single finger swipe down or up to go to Delete, then simply double tap
and the message is deleted. You can, of course, move the rotor away from
Actions to, for example, characters if you want to use the flick down to
read somebody's name/email address letter by letter.

Also, regarding your question about that word you couldn't understand,
anytime this happens if you set the rotor to characters you can review what
Voiceover just said letter by letter simply by flicking down with a single
finger and it will read letter by letter.

You would just have to be careful not to catch any of the keys on something.
But, Amazon sells a nice sleeve case for the keyboard for $19.99. It is
called the Adore June case.

Or, if you have someone around who can sew, it is easy enough to make one.

RE: ios 6 calendar bug, no events?

2012-09-22 Thread Richard Turner
I just tried flicking and every day showed no events no matter how many
times I flicked.
However, you put me on to a quicker solution. Hit the next or previous
month button and the entire month populates correctly so when you touch a
day, it says the number of events.
Hit the previous month to get back to the current month and it too is
populated with the events.

Apple really seems intent on screwing up the calendar with each release.

So, I suspect we are stuck with this one until the next iOS release, just
like we were stuck with the All Day event bug from 5.1.1 until iOS 6.

Hey there,

I've found that if you flick date-by-date instead of sliding your finger to
the date, it shows that there is an event on the days were there is an event
scheduled. If you slide over the event before using the flicking method
however, it'll still show no events on a day where there is one or more
scheduled. It's definitely a bug and an odd one at that. If you go back to
the previous month and then return to the one you slid your finger on to
find dates, they will all show events properly again if you only flick to
navigate.

So it's manageable but still doesn't work properly -- I'd definitely report
it to apple's accessibility team.

If it says turn compact voice off, double tap it so it says turn
compact
voice on. Turn compact voice off means you are using the compact

the premium voice is on your iDevice.

What does it mean by turn compact voice off?
It doesn't seem to have anything about HQ yet, does this mean it

Subject: otter box and iPhone5?

Forgot to post about this yesterday when I got my iPhone5. So the otter box
for the iPhone5 is much lighter and secure then the previous model for the
4s. The 1 for the iPhone 4s, it tended to release the flaps that were to
cover the doc connecter, and mute switch, the only 1 that stayed in place
was the headphone jack, which was miss positioned anyways, even though it
was rumored that it was designed to cover the microphone for the front
facing camera. The otter box for the 4s was also flimsy feeling, even
though it covered the whole phone, and kept my 4s looking like new for over
10 months, and allowed me to sell it on EBay for 4 benggamens. As for the
otter box for the 5. Much more firm, fits snug on the phone, and the rubber
casing doesn't feel cheap. They went away from putting a hole where the
headset plugs in, now you just open the flap when you want to plug it in,
and close when you're done. The flaps close much more tightly, and if you
don't know how the otter box is set up, then you won't know where to open
them at. All the flaps open and close in the same direction, think the one
for the 4 and 4s did this also. Instead of flipping up, they flip down on
the 5. The belt clip is also smaller and more secure, it doesn't flip
around unless you pretty much force it too. Very tight fit also. The
issue I had with the 4s case, I would have to force it in more times than
not. This one snaps in place with no effort at all. I compared the 2 cases
side by side, and I really see no significant difference in size, there is
some, but not much. As for the phone, it has lived up to the hype.
Although I haven't had a chance to use LTE yet, it will be in my market this
winter. But I will be able to use it in October when I go to Vegas.

If I receive tweets on the iPhone, when I am out for example, if I then

Or once a device has downloaded tweets is that it, will the other device

Just wondering as I like the idea of being able to keep my various clients

RE: Four Email Questions

2012-09-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Richard and Sandy,

I just had a look at this and this doesn't work for me, either. I had it set
to 2 lines, then I went and changed it to 5 lines and I tried what you said,
Richard, and flicked away and back to a message and I am completely keeping
my fingers off the screen for a long time and nothing happens.

OK, so now I thought of something and this does make it work. Sandy, do you
have Speak Hints in Voiceover settings turned off? I did have it turned
off because I don't need to hear all the hints of what I can do any more.
Anyhow, I turned it on and as soon as I did Voiceover read the preview. I
turned it off again and it went away.

I will report this as a bug because this is a mail setting and I assume a
sighted person can see whichever number of lines is specified to help
identify messages without having to open them so this should not be
dependent on having hints turned on in Voiceover. As for you Richard, could
you confirm that you have hints turned on?

Thanks,

Sieghard

Re: VO focus in email lists

2012-09-22 Thread David Chittenden
Focus is placed at the top of any list. Using the three finger swipe up is
faster than using a one finger swipe right to go through the list.

When writing emails, If it's a reply, the message edit box is highlighted, so
even though cancel button is announced, just start typing (the onscreen
keyboard is on the bottom of the screen like always when in an edit field) and
the focus will immediately jump to where it is supposed to be. The same is true
for new messages (focus jumps to the to field.

Yes, there is a general focus problem with VO and iOS six and a few apps.
It's one of the bugs I intend to report. I noticed it in email too, and also
in Twitter and particularly with edit fields. I thought at first with
twitter, it was Twitter itself, but after you've been in and read a tweet or
an article or reply to something, it puts you back at the top of your tweets,
very annoying if you read your timeline backwards as I do. Also when you are
wanting to go in to an edit field, although it says editing, the focus seems
to be on the cancel button, so if you are dictating it is fine, you can press
dictate and it will work, but if you want to type, you have to swipe to make
sure you're in the edit box. When swiping sometimes, it will move to the
status bar rather than swiping through. Additionally, it seems to jump, so
when you are editing what you have written, it will put new things not where
you wanted them to go: this is extremely irritating!(Though I have only
noticed this last problem in twitter, when I am trying to select someone to
mention, it moves, it doesn't seem to happen when editing a message in mail,
so perhaps this is just a Twitter problem only). If anyone can reproduce this
in particular, that would be good.
In messages, it seems to be putting you on the messages tab at the start of
the app rather than near the message you want to read.

Usefulness of DND - Was Re: IOS6 features

2012-09-22 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi all, the subject had to be changed since it was rather vague. In any
case, let's all keep in mind that what might seem useless to one person
might be a treasure to someone else. For example, after reading all
about the dnd features on this list and from other web sites and blogs,
it seems to me that Apple made it a bit more complicated than it needs
to be. Either that, or people are still too new to it and don't properly
know how to use it. I think it would be a neat feature myself if I was
on iOS 6. Since I'm not, I rely on RingerX which is a jailbreak app.
This allows me to specify individual contacts or groups on whether I get
notifications from them, whether the ringer is silent for them, or
whether my ringer is maxed out on volume for them. It also lets me
specify a length of quiet time so I don't have to bother with my mute
switch. In any case, an example of a feature which seems useless to me
is the iTunes app on the phone. I never buy music, tv shows, movies or
the like and so don't see a need for it, but I'm not going to begrudge
someone who uses it.

RE: VO in iOS six question

2012-09-22 Thread Loreal Lavigna
Hi Les,

I don't know how or what's going on with the HQ voices for some, but I've
had no end of successes thus far with VO and the new IOS since upgrading on
Wednesday afternoon. Let me know what issues you are experiencing, and if I
can I'll certainly try to duplicate them to see if anything I'm doing
different might help you.

Hi Kirstyn,

I can confirm this behavior, and like you, I find it annoying. So I'm
interested to know if this can be modified. It just started happening with
IOS6.

 Hi all,
Funny problem with VO since updating to iOS six. I have the HQ issue
of course which everyone else seems to have talked about already. So
I'm not bothered about that. But I think, connected to this, is when I
reboot my phone, Daniel returns. This is my default because it is a
British phone. But I use Samantha as a matter of course. What do I
need to do to keep Samantha permanently? It will get irritating
having to change it every time. This never used to happen on 5.11. Do
you think it will resolve itself once I have the HQ voice back? It's
been two days and I still haven't got it though. Thanks

Re: do not disturb, what is the entire story?

We tested it and it gives you options to choose but it does not seem to stop
the phone from ringing.

Paul,

The do not disturb feature does not impact the alarm. ALl this feature does
is prevent inbound calls, text messages, e-mails, etc. I gather it does not
turn off the wifi or cellular radios, but instead I guess it temporarily
blocks these connections unless certain conditions are met. I have not read
any articles that go into extensive detail on how the feature works, but my
comments are based on my own speculations. Now if anyone knows of an article
that explains this in detail (that is a credible source) that would be
great. I almost think of DND as more a firewall that blocks certain
connections unless there is an exception. So, no issues with the alarm that
I have heard of or experienced.

Dear listers,

Since ios 6, we can now keep calls from coming through, if we need that.
But how do I handle the situation where I want to use my alarm on the
phone to wake me up? While I'm sleeping, I only want the alarm to sound,
and no calls at all, no app sounds at all, other than my wake up alarm. Is
this possible?

Setting the mute switch to off, will that also surpress the alarm? Does do
not disturb mode have anything to do with this? What is the complete story
here? I don't quite understand this yet, and to wake up, I stil use my old
Nokia. I'd like to use my iphone for it though. Any additional explanation
is appreciated.

Paul.

Unpleasant IPhone Upgrade Surprise

2012-09-22 Thread E Steven S
I ordered my wife the upgrade using my son's eligibility. This was done via
the Apple app. I assumed I could simply switch the phone numbers when the
phone arrived.

No! The IPhone 5 now has a removable SIM card. This is tied to the number
with eligibility.

Simple enough; I was told by Verizon to go to the store where they would
give me a new SIM card with the appropriate number.

No! The store says they have not gotten the new SIM cards and have no idea
when to expect them -- not days, weeks or when.

I don't know if I had ordered through Verizon using his upgrade they would
have sent it with a SIM and her number. It is something to remember until
those new cards are in circulation.

In all the stuff I read about the IPhone, this is the first I heard Verizon
would now have cards the end user could change. Of course, these are micro
size, and I do not know if any other manufacturers will be using them.

Eric
