Re: Braille Displays For iPhone
Hi , I totally agree that braille display has to be ergonomic for the user. On one end would be something like my braillelite 40 which I can set to scroll autoatically and then adjust the scrolling speed (braillelite doesn't work on iPhone though) and the other extreme would be something that forced you to really go out of your reading pattern to go on to the next group of cells. I have better results with something like 32 cells, 24 will probaly do it, I do not know, but I wish there could be done some experiments to figure out if there are any preferable lengths of braille displays. If 40 cells displays is not doing better than e.g. 24 or 32 cells why spend money on the longer displays. Best regards Annie. I have a preference for Braille books over audio. I can definitely understand a use for a small display with Idevices, (portability, reading with light email and web browsing, and writing practice with Braille beginners) but personally, this wouldn't be my choice. I haven't actually checked out the small ones, so I can't evaluate them yet. If I get a chance, I may do so one of these days. I use my Focus 40 Blue with both my Mac and IPod, and I switch back and forth constantly by either locking the screen on my Ipod, or unloading VO on my Mac. I am very satisfied with this arrangement for my own purposes. Re: VoiceOver Focus Problems With iOS 6
Hi. I could think of one possible reason for Apple to go back to the way it was before. Remember in iOS 5.1.1 focus would be on one item, say the phone app and then when you unlocked the screen after locking it, it would launch that app anywhere you tapped on the screen? I think they reverted back to the way it was in previous iOS versions to prevent that. -- Shawn Sent from my white MacBook using SamNet -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. I'm downloading the 2011 NBA finals for my Apple TV
Hey again. I'm amazed at what iTunes has on it. I couldn't sleep, so I thought I'd watch something enjoyable, and that's the Heat getting beat in the 2011 finals. I saw you could get this content on your Apple TV, but I decided to go into iTunes and download it for myself. As I speak I'm getting the content now. It doesn't cost too much, and there's an HD version and a non HD version which I got because it was cheaper, and besides, HD doesn't do anything for me. iTunes also has MLB baseball, NFL, and some college basketball, but I'm not sure if these are complete games or not. I'll tell you how the NBA goes. Since there's no NHL right now I figure I'd enjoy the NBA. Just something to enjoy. Oh yeah, this content is under the TV listings. Have fun and don't work too hard. Voice Calls.
I can just about hear voice over during a call when it's on speaker phone but I wish it was louder. However, I have not tried turning the volume up. I mostly use the wired ear pods when making a call. Kawal. On Oct 13, 2012, at 9:22 AM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hi Robert, I just send a reply to Apple Accessibility about Voiceover volume during a call. I reported this to them and they replied with some suggestions, but they only consisted of the explanation about how to make sure speakerphone mode is properly activated which means they thought somehow the phone hadn’t switched to speakerphone and this is why I couldn’t hear Voiceover. I have no problem with my phone switching to speakerphone when I take it away from my ear. I am not sure if you have your phone in a case, but make sure you try it without case as sometimes a case can cover the proximity sensor and that is what causes your phone to switch to speakerphone. I usually do this: I dial the number I want to call and after I double tap on call I put my hand over the top part of the phone where the slot is in the glass for the earpiece. Once the phone on the other end starts ringing I remove my hand and now the proximity sensor should of course notice nothing is covering it and switch to speakerphone. However, I still have the volume issue. I have volume in my rotor settings and after a call connects I can turn up VO volume to 100% by turning the rotor to Volume and then flicking up until I get to 100%. Then I turn down the call volume to as low as it will go with the volume down button, but first of all the call volume does not seem to go lower than a certain level and Voiceover even at 100% can hardly be heard over the call volume. You can of course work around this by using a headset, but I definitely suggest you write to Apple Accessibility and report this because it seems to be one of those bugs which most iPhone 5 users and some iPhone 4S and 4 users also don’t seem to have. I did a factory reset about 3 days after I updated to iOS 6 because of a few other issues and at first this seemed to be better, but after I tried to place calls where I had to enter numbers, listen to menus etc. a few times I find it really isn’t much better if at all. As far as I am concerned this is one of the more inconvenient and serious bugs because one has to enter numbers or listen to menus so often and of course I also can’t put the phone in speakerphone and look up other information during a call such as maybe a phone number, something in an email or another app. It would be interesting to know how many people experience this problem and while it adds to list traffic, the traffic is down significantly from what it was so maybe everybody who reads this could test this and post whether they can hear Voiceover comfortably during a call when the phone is on speakerphone or not. Before the iOS 6 update this was no problem for me on my 4S. Re: Airport express or extreme as a wireless and airplay solution?
Sieghard, As far as I know and recall, he would have to connect the AirPort Express to the DSL/wireless router he has. I do not know of a non-APple wireless router that the Airport Express will connect with. If you have connected an APple router as an extender for a wireless network, share how you did that. I would be really interested. I only have APple routers here, so cannot speak to using non-Apple hardware. Scott On Oct 14, 2012, at 8:40 PM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hi James, Just set up the Airport Express in Bridge mode and it won't be a problem. Keep in mind that if you buy an Airport Express at a store, just get somebody to tell you the serial number so you can write it down or record it in a voice memo. Then just call A[pple Tech support and they will walk you through the setup that applies to your specific situation. When I bought my Airport Express, I actually have 2, I explained what I was trying to do and they walked me through everything. My main router is not a WiFi router so I use one Airport Express which is physically connected to create my WiFi network, my second Airport Express is connected to my Sonos player in the kitchen to Airplay enable my entire Sonos system. You only need one Airport Express since you already have a WiFi capable router and there is no need to connect it to your router with a cable. You can just join your existing WiFi and, as I said, put it into Bridge mode which means it acts sort of as an extender to your WiFi and you can also enable Airplay on the Airport Express and then if you have a stereo or whatever you want to plug it into, just put it close to your receiver, use a 3.5mm mal to RCA mal cable and connect it to an input in your receiver. Then you can switch to that input and listen to whatever you Airplay from your iPhone. Hi, I have some questions about how to configure if I would like to set up the option os using either and Apple Airport Express ore Airport Extreme for my wireless networking including the ability to do air play. I have an understanding at a pretty high level of the concepts involved, I know how to set up and configure my own DSL router and I understand what most of the networking concepts mean and what they do. I was wondering if there is someone on this list that would be willing to contact me and help me to understand exactly how I would need to configure things. Here would be my delemma. My DSL router, which I currently use for wired and wireless has NAT (network address translation) of course. The issue would be how to avoid double NAT. I think in one option where I just add the airport to the nework plugged into one of the wired ports on the router directly, it would just be joining it to the current wireless network and give it an address from the DSL router and would be capable of being an air play device on the network. My guess is in that configuration that I would in some way have to disable most of the wifi stuff on the airport? I am not quite sure what that configuration would look like. I should say I don't have the airport just yet. I could go out and buy one if this would work. In the other configuration which I would like to have the option of doing, I would use the airport to handel my wireless networking and of course it would need the DSL router to be able to access my ISP and actually give me internet. My DSL router has the option of turning off NAT, but says not to do it because I guess the entire router configuration would be accessible from just the public IP address. It has a password on it, but still... Probably not a good idea, right? How else would one avoid double NAT though? How do people do this if they want to? I'm pretty sure the airport is not capable of being a DSL router in itself. Thanks to anyone willing to help me out in understanding this. Hi, the one I've settled on lately is the Amazon basics Bluetooth Keyboard. You should be able to order it from the Amazon UK site. It doesn't fold, and the keys are normal size, and it is about half the cost of the Apple Bluetooth keyboard. -- Raul A. Re: Apple tv
It is very accessible, and yes, it does have voiceover on it. Many people though are confused, thinking it is used for watching TV, like any channel on your TV, but this is not correct. Apple TV has several things on it, Movies, which allows you to rent or buy through iTunes, TV Shows, which allows you to rent or buy through iTunes, Music, which I guess allows you to buy through iTunes, not sure, haven't used the music part yet. Then there are other things such as Net Flix, which requires a subscription, YouTube, Radio, Podcasts, MLBTV, Trailers, iTunes Festival, Vimeo, Flickr, WSJ Live, NHL, NBA, Hulu Plus, which requires a subscription, and Photo Stream. Some of these others might require subscriptions, but I don't use many of hem myself to know. There is a computer section which allows you to turn on home sharing in iTunes which allows you to access your iTunes library through the Apple TV. And there is settings which is self explanitory. All of what I mention is accessible with VoiceOver. I am very happy with mine and would definitly recommend it to others. -Original Message- From: cnmyh...@gmail.com Sent: Sunday, October 14, 2012 10:40 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Apple tv How accessible is it? Re: app won't open
Hi, a few questions come to mind. 1. Did the same version of the app work before? 2. Is this a new app which are you first trying out? 3. Are you using iOS 5, or iOS 6? I ask this because I've seen some apps which are optimized for iOS 5 and won't work on iOS 6, and then there are some which are the opposite, like Muxica where it works on iOS 6, but crashes like you describe on iOS 5. Also, the type of iPhone you have might make a difference. I know this won't necessarily help, but between you and your friend, there has to be some commonality where this app doesn't work. This will help you report it to the developer or make a review in the app store in case others have the same issue. -- Raul A. trouble with syncing iPhone with iTunes in Windows
Hi all. I've done the extensive Google search, forum reading, and Apple Support web site reading and I'm still stumped. Here goes. I have an iPhone 4S iOS 5.1.1. My wife this weekend purchased an iPhone 4S iOS 6.0. We use one desktop computer with Windows 7 on it. I have a user account and she has a user account. When I am in my own user account I can connect my iPhone and her iPhone to the computer, open iTunes and sync. Although I haven't done the syncing with her phone, I know it works because the phone is seen just fine and I can make changes to it, ETC. Now read on for the weirdness. If I go into her Windows account, open iTunes and connect her phone in, it takes a very long time for iTunes to recognize the phone. When it does eventually, I get an error that the sync services from the provider or the server were unable to load and to try again later. I disconnect her phone and sometimes even have to kill all the iTunes processes. I do the same on her account with my iPhone and get the same results. Now, because I know that I can sync my phone on my account, and her phone is seen by iTunes in my account, and because I know that under her account, none of the 2 phones is seen and we get the sync services error, this tells me it's something specific with her account which is preventing iTunes from doing what it needs to do. As far as Windows is concerned, the phones are seen just fine because we get the option to open the folder and see the pictures in them just like with all iPhones. This is in her account as well as mine. As I mentioned before, I've read all the forums I can think of, reinstalled iTunes, and even removed her account completely, and recreated it and even made it an admin account and still, the same error happens. So, that's why I'm writing here. I would like to see if anyone's come across this and what, if any solution was found. Since she has her own Apple ID and I have my own, I didn't want to start using my account to sync her phone onto, but I will find a way to do that if I have to at least for the backups. Plus, she wants to put music on her phone, and I don't blame her. It's not my fault she doesn't appreciate Songza, Pandora, and AudioGalaxy grin. When we are in her account and connect her phone, visually it shows the phone in devices, but the progress bar is moving constantly, showing it's doing what it needs to do to see the phone. Using Window-Eyes I cannot gain focus to her phone in the devices because it's not yet available. This is how I can tell that iTunes does see her phone, but some driver, or service isn't doing what it needs to in order for the phone to be accessible from the devices tab. So, I'm fresh out of ideas. I even suggested to her to just install iTunes on her netbook and let's try it from there, but we wanted to not do that since iTunes will run painfully slow on her netbook, and besides that, my 500 thousand or more songs are on the main computer, not her netbook, and as I mentioned before, she wants music from there. Ideas, thoughts? I'm up to trying something new. I haven't yet called Apple because I know they will ask me to try these things first anyway, and I didn't want to waste their time. -- Raul A. Re: Downcast - Is there a way to import mp3 file from Dropbox into Downcast?
Sounds like you are doing everything properly. When I do this, and get to the point of tapping th the export button, it brings up a list of available apps including Downcast. All works well. RE: Braille Displays For iPhone
I have both a 40 cell display and a 20 cell display. I've found that when reading I preferred the 20 cell as it meant I could read the book faster using 20 cells. Also, when taking notes, 20 cells was all I needed to help me remember where I am in the notepad and to do quick review of what I have written. The 40 cells is useful for editing long documents but if you only have a 20 or an 18, you'll manage just fine. I personally don't think that anything less then a 18 cell would be useful as you'd not be able to put many words on a line. This is just my opinion. I'm used to a 40-cell braillelite 40 which is still plugging away but unfortunately won't work with anything on the Mac except Terminal. I see the low prices of some of these 12, 14, 18 and even 20-cell displays and wonder if I wouldn't be frustrated. I also see the trend toward everything being dependent on the computer or smart device instead of being able to use it as a stand-alone also and while I see the benefits I wonder if I will be happy with something that forces me to always have to have two devices of some kind together. Yet it's not like I can really picture me affording a stand-alone unit with maybe an sd card slot so I'm not limited by the braille device's storage. so I'm trying to reconcile myself to being glad to buy a device that will work with phone and computer. I think I can do that but I'm not sure I can convince myself that a device with so few cells, even at an almost affordable cost, will be worth it. I also would like to hear from people who habitually have used 32 and 40 cell displays as to whether they really find the displays with fewer cells satisfying for purposes of reading and web browsing. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. RefreshABraille18 for Sell, final price $1300 or best offer
Hello, I have a APH RefreshABraille18 for sell. Unit is in excellent condition, and has seen very little use. The Unit comes with a Rubberized Swade slip on case for protection, and a power only retractable USB charging cable. The RefreshABraille 18 is a very reliable, instant on, bluetooth and USB Braille display. I have used it with my iPhone 4S, my Macbook Air, and my Windows laptops with no difference in usage or reliability. I just bought this unit late March of this year and found that although I thought it would be cool to try my hand at a braille display again, I am not finding that I use it too much, more preferring the Verbatum external bluetooth keyboard. I accept Paypal, CreditCard and will absolutely accept a serious, decent offer. so if you are interested. feel free to call or email me. I have a verified, confirmed Paypal Business account and you can go to http://commtechusa.net to check that out towards the bottom of the page. All I ask is that being that the price is already low, for selling purposes I ask that the buyer pays for shipping and insurance. I don't wan to get a display that is to big to be portable, but not to small as to cause extra work when reading a book or something like that. I realize that most of my requirements will still come down to a personal preference, but gathering information on the available products is a good start I think since it isn't really possible to just walk in to a store and take a look. - Original Message - From: Marco Migotti n...@migotti.net To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, October 15, 2012 8:49 AM Subject: RE: Braille Displays For iPhone I have both a 40 cell display and a 20 cell display. RE: Apple tv
Hi Simon, I also have not hooked up the Apple TV to my receiver with an optical cable, but there is no reason why Voiceover should not work if you choose to do so. Apple has made the Apple TV accessible with Voiceover and it would make little sense to do this only when an HDMI connection is used, after all, HDMI is still a digital connection except that it includes video as well as audio whereas the optical connector is just for audio. In any case, if you are interested just buy it from Apple and send it back within 30 days should you not like it. Re: trouble with syncing iPhone with iTunes in Windows
Hi Raul, Unfortunately I don't have a complete answer, but I have also had the sync services error happening sometimes when I connect and other times not. It started with ITunes 10.7 for me, but I have found google results Apple Forum discussions that say this goes way back to about the beginning of time as far as the IPhone and ITunes goes. I read some posts that some people had some luck with repairing ITunes and others deleted or renamed the Sync Services folder and let ITunes recreate it in the account upon launch. In Windows 7 it is under \users\user name\AppData\... and then Apple Computers . I'm sorry, I don't think I have the exact path right, but it is easy to find browsing around there. You have to type in \users\user name\AppData though in the run box where user name is the user name of the account on the machine because if you stop short of typing the \AppData part you won't ever get it to show what you need to browse to. That may or may not be true for you. Jim On 10/15/12, Raul A. Gallegos r...@raulgallegos.com wrote: Hi all. -- Raul A. RE: sound when turning on iphone
Hello, Maybe a sound or vibration would be nice, but I don't think it's that big a deal, after all, if you have Voiceover on it will speak when it's ready. On my 4S that takes about 25 to 28 seconds and I understand the iPhone 5 is faster. If you have it plugged in the double vibration only comes a couple of seconds before Voiceover talks, so it's really of no great usefulness. If for some reason you turn your phone off and on again and Voiceover does not talk, just wait 30 or 40 seconds and then flick the Mute switch, if you get a short vibration you know the phone is on and Voiceover for some reason isn't talking, maybe because the volume is all the way down. Re: sound when turning on iphone
As far as I know, the only way we know the phone is on is when VoiceOver says, VoiceOver on. This is when the phone is not plugged in to the charger or the computer. If the phone is plugged in, you will hear the familiar chimey kind of sound that indicates the phone is now back on. The sound is the same one that you hear when the phone is already on and you plug it in. Hope this helps! RE: How to change male to female voice in iPhone 4s!
Hello bhavesh, At this point Voiceover does not give you choices as to which voice you can use other than the different English voices that are country specific, e.g. US English (a female voice), British English (a male voice), Australian English (a female voice) etc. There is no way to download additional voices and I found that trying to, for example, change the default voice to Australian English if you are in North America is more trouble than it's worth. You can change it in the rotor, but then you don't get the high quality voice and it will revert back to the default if you reboot your phone. Only way to change the default voice I know of is to go into Settings, General International and change your region to Australia, but then this also does change the date format if you had it set to United States before. RE: sound when turning on iphone
Yes, Sieghard, that is how I do the on/off now, but I am going to try to hear the phone. Just a quicker way to know it is booting up. RE: Help Downloading Itunes, Please
Hi Wren, Go to www.apple.com/iTunes/ Now click on Download iTunes Now Once the page loads, you should see something like iTunes 10.7 for Windows (64 Bit). Of course it may say 32 Bit in your case depending on whether you use a 32 Bit or 64 Bit version of Windows. In any case, the website automatically detects what you are using and give you the appropriate download. Next there is a email me checkbox which I usually uncheck and also a checkbox for Keep me up to date with Apple news, software updates, and the latest information on products and services.. If you use Jaws you can simply use the x quick key to get to these checkboxes and either leave them checked or uncheck them. If you do want them checked and get emails you also have to enter your email address in the edit field that is there. Lastly, you do have to check your location or check Other and enter your country if it's not listed as a selection you can check. This is mandatory. These are radio buttons, so r will get you there and the space bar will check the selection once you find the correct one. After that is a clickable link, it is right after a link called Why do we need this. It's not a button and it has a long and strange name, for me Jaws reads it just like this: Graphic en_US/iTunes_EnUS_DwDL_0902008 clickable Just press enter on that and if you use Windows 7 you should now be able to press Alt+N to get to the Run, Save or Cancel options. Can't even remember how this worked in XP, I think it just pops up asking you if you want to Run or Save. I recommend to Save it first and then install it rather than choosing Run. It's very simple, I think you were in the correct place already, just make sure you select your country and then click the link below the Why do we need this link. RE: Jaws and Itunes compatibility
Running Jaws 12. Do I have to download scripts for iTunes? I have had nothing but problems with iTunes with Windows-XP with nothing showing up where it should. Perhaps this would help? Running all of this on a Netbook will of course be a very slow and maybe somewhat frustrating experience as iTunes is not the most efficient program and runs a lot better on a faster computer and Netbooks are marginal at best. I used to own an Asus Netbook and didn't keep it for very long because it was just too painfully slow compared to say an I5 quad Core 3.2 or 3.4 Ghz CPU. The funny thing is that while you maybe can buy a Netbook for $350 or $400, you can get an entry level laptop with an I5 processor and Windows 7 for $650 to $800, so basically double, but the performance difference is staggering. You can change it in the rotor, but then you don't get the high quality voice and it will revert back to the default if you reboot your phone. Hi, I also had the same difficulty with an app last week. What I did that worked for me was: to delete the app that wouldn't update. Then I clicked on Purchases in the updates area of the app store. This will take a minute or so to load, but when it does, you will see all your past downloads. Find the app that you just uninstalled and re-install it. This did the trick for me. RE: Apple tv
You need either a TV or receiver that has HDMI inputs or an optical input. Both are digital so most old tube style TV's won't have them and most receivers that are older than 15 or so years won't have them, either. Re: iPhone Cases
Jim, Few things here, the Tech21 case options for the iPhone involve three models, the one you have, which is the same one I have, also one with a leather front flap which opens sidewards not up to the top of the phone. The flap is leather as is the hinge, but the rest of the case is exactly like what you have already. They also offer an Apple BumpOn style case, which has a clear plastic back, which is optional, I did not get that as the D3O is not in the back then as well. The D3O in fact runs along in two vertical, top to bottom, strips, and enters fully into each of the four corners of the case, there is also a joining strip at the bottom. The technology has it, that the gel like D3O when impacted immediately spreads the impact shock across the whole of the D3O material. So if your phone is dropped on a corner direct impact, all four corners, the left and right sides and the back strips all evenly distribute the impact energy. Not only does this keep your iPhone safe, but, also I've noticed that my case seems very resilient to scratches etc. Concerning air flow, if you remove your phone you'll spot that the back section of the case, between the two strips of D3O is criss crossed with a cut out section, this is made of triangular shapes for strength, but, also serves to aid air flow. All in all, a cracking case. This one is called the Tech21 Impact Snap case for IPhone 5. As I say, I just received it and put it on, but so far I do like it. My only question and possible concern so far is not one unique to this case in any way that is not a factor of others, but that most of the case is made of polycarbonate, which in my understanding is a form of plastic? and the thing I wondered about is if that is in fact like plastic in its heat trapping properties, if it will allow the IPhone to have enough exposure to be able to sufficiently cool when it heats up from higher intensity processes. I do wonder if anyone has any insight about that. I'm sure experience will reveal the reality. If an IPhone can survive pretty much being sealed off from the world almost within the Otter Box, I guess this would be the same to a lesser degree than that though. So as not to confuse anybody, the D3o material is in at least two strips that run up and down the long edges of the case. I guess the idea is if this material hardens, it will take the impact and the other part of the surface area of the case will not take a direct hit. As mentioned in another reply, this case is pleasing in that it does not add a lot of bulk to do the job. It also doesn't feel or look really cheap either. It is pretty nice to the touch when on the phone especially. Of course it is right against the metal of the phone so there is that solid backing there, although the case feels respectably solid for sure even before you put it on the phone when you take it out of the package. Make no mistake though, it would not feel as nice if this was entirely what the phone external casing was made of from the factory with no metal involved. Plenty of phones on the market are exactly that or worse. Sometimes much worse. The case does not get in the way of any buttons or ports. They are all cut out and it is not the type of case that puts any of its own covers over any buttons to push them through. In my opinion that is a very good thing that it does not do that. I don't want to push buttons through a case's plastic coverings. My preference. Finally, I have come across youtube videos for a Tech21 case that is said to be entirely real leather with the D3o in it and of course an internal lining and it is said to be very nice. It is a flip case. I can not find it anywhere though, I could not even get it to come up in a search result searching on the Tech21 site. None of its reviews were done by anyone in the US though that I found and they only referenced a place to get it in the UK. I emailed Tech21 about that, to ask about its availability, we'll see if I get a response. A response won't be til next week at the earliest though as I just sent the email a few hours ago. -- Raul A. Re: FW: How to change male to female voice in iPhone 4s!
Hi Bhavesh and Sieghard. Starting with Bhavesh, there's only one voice per language. For example, if you use the US English Samantha voice, then Samantha is the only voice for that language. Sieghard, you can get a different high quality voice by changing your voice control voice on an iPhone 4 or Siri voice on a 4S or 5. Unfortunately the thing I don't like about iOS 6 is that once you change the high quality voice you want to get in the voice control or Siri voice settings, and you change the language in the Voiceover roater to the language with the high quality voice, when you turn off Voiceover, it reverts back to the default language and you have the compact version of that voice. I think they should let us choose the voice control language as the default voice rather than having us muck around with region settings and that. -- Shawn Sent from my white MacBook using SamNet -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: adding Instapaper Read Later bookmark to Safari
Thanks, Brett and Esther, for your help. YOur advice worked perfectly, and I can now send both email and web links to INstapaper. However, I've always found it easier to create the Instapaper bookmark on my Mac and the sync the bookmarks, as is also suggested on the Instapaper pages as an easier method. Whenever you read instructions to drag and drop a bookmark to your browser's toolbar, use the contextual menu instead: navigate to the bookmark on that page and copy the link. Create a bookmark, and use the context menu to edit the address field of the bookmark so you paste in the java script that you copied. The same instructions work whether you use a Mac or Windows, and can be applied to any java bookmarklet, including Google translation bookmarks. The only specific recommendation for Mac users is that these be saved to your Bookmarks Bar, so you can activate the Read Later bookmarking with shortcut keys like Command-1 (if it is the first bookmark in your Bookmarks Bar). Also, on an iPad I go to the main Settings menu and under Safari I turn on the switch for Always Show Bookmarks Bar so I can just flick to Read Later and double tap. Then, last year in April, when they started up the Recommend apps that you like feature, I wrote back that I wanted to recommend Instapaper, but that they had just discontinued the free version. The response was to remove the free app description, even though all the useful comments also applied to the paid version, which many commenters said they had: www.applevis.com/applevis-forum/site-news-feedback-and-discussion/recommend-apps-you For the email bookmarking feature I just copied the individual address they gave me to my Contacts, with the name Instapaper. You can find the address in your accounts page on the Instapaper web site. HTH. Just go to Settings and double tap on the Add Instapaper booklet to Safari. In that dialog, tap the Okay button, this will copy the necessary java script to the clipboard. It will also open a page telling you how to add the bookmark. You will be asked to bookmark the current page, so add the bookmark. Before saving the bookmark, double tap the address field and flick to the clear text button and double tap it. This will clear the current page address. Use your rotor to get to edit and choose paste to paste the contents of the clipboard. This will paste in the necessary java script. Then click the save button. You will now have the instapaper bookmark saved. To save something to instapaper, just navigate to that page and bring up your bookmarks and choose the instapaper one. I tap Yes and then get the following message: The addressbook you are using does not allow me to change this. I am using 2 cloud services for my contacts. For personal use I use Windows Live Hotmail and for business use I use Microsoft Office 365 which is full hosted exchange. Adding relationships for contacts I have in either contact list results in that same message. I am curious whether somebody who uses Google for storing contacts gets the same message because if that is so Apple is offering a SIRI feature which is useless for just about everybody except those who use an Apple @me.com email where I assume this will work. I am not syncing my contacts via iCloud although I guess I could try that, e.g. turn of Contacts in the Hotmail account and turn it on in iCloud. I am not sure if this will screw things up and if anybody has ideas, suggestions or experience with this I’d appreciate any feedback. It’s not like being able to tell SIRI who my Mom or my brother is would completely make my day, I can still go into Outlook and put in “Mom” or “Brother” as a nick name and then I can say “Call Mom” and it works. I am also mystified by what is supposed to be a new ability of SIRI. I read an example where they say “So and so is my favourite comedian”, can’t remember what name they used. So, I just told SIRI “Shania Twain is my favourite country singer”. SIRI replied “I see”. Then I asked “Who is my favourite country singer” and SIRI said “I don’t know”. Does this mean I have to add Shania Twain to my contacts first not withstanding that my contacts can’t have relationships associated with them? I wish Apple would put some useful functionality in SIRI like “Redial the last number that called me” or “Turn Bluetooth on” instead of coming up with gimmicks that don’t work for anybody who is not using Apple services. this But Regards, Sieghard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: iPhone Cases
I have no idea how you got your case Neil as I'm still waiting for mine! Kawal. On 15 Oct 2012, at 19:31, Neil Barnfather - TalkNav for...@talknav.com wrote: Jim, Few things here, the Tech21 case options for the iPhone involve three models, the one you have, which is the same one I have, also one with a leather front flap which opens sidewards not up to the top of the phone. How to get Apple TV to work on a device without digital inputs
Hi. First, I'm sending this out as a new message because I can't find the one from the person who asked about this. You can hook an Apple TV up to a regular TV or stereo, but you need extra equipment to do this. Tiger Direct sells a device that converts HDMI to composite, which is two RCA plugs for audio and one for video. It costs $60, and it works great. To get it go to http://tigerdirect.com There's a toll free number you can call to order it. If your TV doesn't have composite connectors on it you can still get this to work. You'll need a composite to coax connector. This converts the RCA plugs into the plug that screws onto a TV where you'd connect cable to your TV. Radio Shack sells this for $28. I purchased these so I could hook my Apple TV to a television set of my Dad and Stepmother when I visit them. If you're going to go this route I'd strongly consider buying a flat screen TV. I don't know if the cheaper ones have HDMI on them or not, but with the devices I mentioned you're getting close to the cost of a small flat screen TV. Just my thoughts. RE: bluetooth 4, and aircondition
Pablo, I have 3 of the Radio Thermostats and they work great. The thermostats have a WiFi module which means they can connect to your WiFi network at home. As soon as they are connected and you also signed up for an account at www.RadioThermostat.com the thermostats can be controlled from your iPhone from anywhere in the world as long as you have internet access and of course your router/WiFi at home has to be up and running. I could sit on the beach in Maui and as long as I had a data connection I could open the app and see what temperature it is in my house, I could increase or decrease the temperature etc.. I live in northern BC and it doesn't get hot enough for long enough to worry about air conditioning, but the thermostat can control heating as well as cooling. If you search the archives for thermostat you should find quite a few messages from myself as well as a few others regarding this. You can order the thermostats directly from www.RadioThermostat.com, but I also know a few people in the States said they found them at Home Depot for $99 which is less than if you buy them online. Amazon also has them, just look for Radio Thermostat and you can find the app by searching for the same, the app is pretty much fully accessible and relatively easy to use. The model I have I think is called CT30. You would of course have to get these installed by a professional installer and if you are renting I guess you may have to check with your landlord. I have seen something about wifi on internet, but I don't understand how a phone can control via wifi a device using the wifi connection, if I use a router at home. Thanks, I think that I should to read so much about it. Thanks again. I know that the iPhone 4s, and the iPhone 5, comes with bluetooth 4.0. Some one who has a iPhone 4s, or iPhone 5, has used any bluetooth aircondition controler with the iPhone? Any advice with this way to control the air condition? In my home the aircondition is very hard to use w been blind, everything is digital, and has many functions that I can do by myself, or that I can do using a regular aircondition control. Because of that I was thinking about a bluetooth aircondition controler.. Thanks for your advices. Question concerning ICloud Backup
When selecting the info I want to back up to ICloud, it lists the apps and says whether they are on or off. If I turn an app off, does this mean the app will not be backed up to ICloud and won't be restored with restore from icloud backup or is it just the data (information like login info and passwords) that won't be restored?
