This morning, ~9:30am, there were two calling swamp sparrows in the marsh
beneath the dam at the ne corner of the lake. Got good looks at one.
Also present were two winter-plumaged eared grebes. Also a dipper below the
dam spillway. Otherwise the usuals.

3 or 4. I don't believe I have changed the amount of see I normally put out.
Obviously, one season does not a trend, make. But wonder if others have
noticed a marked difference this winter as opposed to past trends.

I have witnessed this behavior from Corvids (crows, ravens, etc) on numerous
occasions. Certainly for nesting benefit. There used to be a mule in a pen
near our house, and this time every year, we could see just this behavior
from the neighborhood crows. The mule never seemed to mind.

Just had a late pink-sided junco (J. h. mearnsi) at my feeder. Haven't had
anything but gray-headed (caniceps) for about 3 weeks.
Seemed worthy of reporting.

That brings the total species at Manitou Lake this year to 71 out of 137
recorded over 20+ years.

In the past week both evening grosbeak (by the dozens) and band-tailed
pigeon fledglings have been showing up at my feeder, and being fed by
parents. [black-oiler sunflower] Also, had one black-headed grosbeak
fledgling.

It appeared to be 2 adults and 2 recently fledged young. They must be
breeding there!

Hi Steve,
I believe, from reading a long time ago, the juv/imm magpies form non-adult
gangs in the fall/winter of their first year. And separate from adults
during that time. This sounds like what you witnessed. I see the same thing
down there every fall.
