Copy these two files to /mnt/mmcblk0p2/tce/optional on the piCorePlayer

jivelite files. If you've installed other packages you might need to
increase the size of the ext4 partition mmcblk0p2.

Your computer will be fine for SOX. Just try playing a 24/96 track

All content sounds better on a Touch than the SB3 (a bit better - not

However recently I have noticed a new problem. When playing back a
gapless album, in particular a continuous DJ mix album, there is a
noticeable transition between the tracks. It's not so much a gap,
rather an unevenness in the tempo. Like the new track is slightly
 delayed.

This used to work great. My music library has not changed. Gapless
albums that previously played back fine, now have awkward track
transitions. I suspect this was introduced in a recent server software
 or firmware upgrade.

 * Is Logitech aware of this? Has anyone else noticed it?
 * Is a fix in the making?
 * Is it the server or the firmware?
 * What is the last version of the server or firmware that did not have
this problem, and how to I revert to that version?

Is the Boom synced to something else? - I don't think synced playback
can be gapless...

I disagree. Erland's excellent plugins provide the tools to create the
(IMHO) close-to-ultimate smart music selection system (short of
actually determining your taste by reading your mind or using the if
you liked X then you'll probably like Y because other people who liked
 X like Y Spotify-type shared rating model).

I have written a simple SQL playlist (using his plugins) that randomly
plays songs but unrated songs are played most frequently, 5 star songs
next most frequently, 4 star next, etc. 1 star songs are never played.
For me, this is the perfect system:

 - no decision to make when you want to listen to music
 - new (i.e. unrated) and more favoured songs are played more
 frequently
 - you can always rediscover any songs (except those banished to 1
star oblivion) and re-rate them if you want

This is why I have donated for Erland's plugins in the past but, I have
to admit, probably not enough considering I that almost all my listening
 is via this playlist :(

Or you could simply enjoy MIP or random mixes of your entire collection
having deleted/archived any 1 or 2 star stuff...

I bet once you have rated something 1 or 2 you never listen to it again
- so it might as well be removed from the collection. So the 1-5 scheme
basically resolves into good or not good - and you might as well just
jettison the not good stuff. That's what I do.
YMMV.

Life is too short to rate tracks... And rating tracks is actually the

There may be scope to argue that a licensor is precluded from changing
the licence conditions on software if he or she misled the licensee
into relying on the continuance of the existing terms in the knowledge
that the licensee would be detrimentally affected by that reliance if
the terms were changed.

The argument would be based on a legal doctrine called estoppel, which
can prohibit you from exercising your legal rights - in this case, the
right to change the licence conditions - if you have allowed someone
else to rely on the fact that you wouldn't exercise those rights. In
light of the rhetoric that is often bandied about to the effect of
Once GPL, always GPL, circumstances could well exist in which this
argument would be quite persuasive.

The question is, can estoppel restrict a licensor from changing their
licence conditions to the user community as a whole, or only one
particular licensee? Probably only the latter, since it is generally
impossible to demonstrate reliance, which is one of the elements of
estoppel, except on a case-by-case basis. 59 This reduces the
usefulness of the estoppel argument to combat the withdrawal of open
source licensing of a package that is in widespread use. At best, one
open source licensee's victory will cause the licensor to reconsider
enforcing the new license terms against other former licensees.

Another limitation of the estoppel argument is that a court would not
necessarily compensate a licensee who had been misled into relying on
the continuity of an open source licence by requiring the licensor to
reinstate that license; it would be equally open for the court simply
to order the licensor to pay damages. Those damages might be negligible
unless the licensee has significant business interests riding on the use
of the package.

...

Just to be clear, I have no issue with Erland choosing to charge people
for his work going forward - that is his inalienable right. However,
nobody SHOULD provide anything - under licence or under contract - for
free or for a price - and then disable it or disable it until a fee is
paid... UNLESS it was spelled out at the time of supply (i.e. as a
Licence/contract term) that this could or would happen.

I'm not saying anyone should or even could sue anyone - that's just
silly. I was talking about the general case of retrospective
modification of contract or license terms which is normally something
only Governments can do with impunity... !!

Under EU law it is indeed illegal to disable or otherwise distrain or
deprive one of the enjoyment of goods or services that were supplied
previously under one set of terms - in this case for free -
UNLESS it was made plain in writing at the time of the original supply
that a defined-cost charge or a defined expiry would become effective
at a defined date in the future.

This is to avoid consumers being held to ransom or suckered-in.

However, in this case (software) it only applies to a defined version
of the plugin - the last one freely published prior to the introduction
of a notified charge. So while it is perfectly valid to introduce a
charge for new versions, it cannot legally be applied retrospectively.
The consumer ALWAYS has the right to continue to enjoy the old, free
version or CHOOSE to pay for the new version.

isn't I suppose, but it is above my try this on a lark threshold.

The little Squeezeplayer software sounds pretty good, though nothing at
all like the software I normally use. I had to force it out through a
USB Dac on a Mac, rather than through the Mac's built in audio outputs.

If you want cynicism, I wonder really how well a $300 chunk of gear can
sound, even avoiding the DAC in the gear and taking the signal out
digitally to a decent DAC. Since they don't have them in stock on the
Logitech site, I also wonder if they are selling like hotcakes, or if a
new model is about to debut for Christmas. I really think I want to
order and test one, but I also want the option of sending it back if a
new model comes out in two weeks, or in the unlikely chance I just
 really don't like it.

Also, it is a non-trivial task to make my online music library
available to it, since it is currently in iTunes and has a bot of 30K
tracks in it. And all in AIFF format, but NOT all with embedded
artwork. I don't suppose there is an easy way to get iTunes to drive a
 Squeezebox?

If it (A Logitech Touch device) operates like the Squeezeplayer, the
remote interface on my iPhone is really nice and quick. About as good
as Apple's Remote, but without the need to put a Mac or PC anyplace we
 want sound.

Any particular reason that Logitech doesn't want to finish the software
and sell it at $99 a pop or something? That would seem to make sense.
The current software emulator is, if I correctly understand, a forever
beta product, and it is useful to get an idea of what a Squeezebox is
and does, but not so useful to get an idea of how one sounds.

At least, I don't think so. I have been known to be wrong once or
twice, which is why I -asked-. I would love to hear your opinion on the
above subjects, but honestly, I don't need the SA crap if that is all
 you are interested in.

I wasn't being cynical, merely pointing out a fact. The whole reason
the SB line of products exist is to absolutely avoid having to use any

The Touch as a player sonically exceeds what is possible with a
computer connected to a DAC via USB or s/pdif. The server software
essentially transmits TCP packets to the player and thus the server
computer only has to behave as a computer (which it is very good at)
and not as an audio source (which it is usually rather poor at). This
means that the considerations of things like Amarra are irrelevant to
the SB experience. The server operating system and hardware simply
isn't any part of what you hear.

SBS integrates with iTunes (sort of) and the two can co-exist. SBS can
play AIFF files (although most Mac people would use ALAC).

To summarise; using Squeezeplay gives you a vague idea of what the
system is capable of in terms of functionality (although really you
need to use iPeng or Squeezepad on an iPad/Phone for the fully
immersive UI experience). However, audio quality is not usually
comparable; Touch with internal DAC or external DAC will exceed what
most people can achieve with Squeezeplay and a computer.

Squeezeplay will never be released as a finished commercial product
AFAIK. It will continue to have very limited capabilities compared to a
hardware player.

I would suggest using something like foobar2000 to convert the WavePack
file to wave. Then you can use something like 7zip or WinRar to extract
the contents of the ISO file - which will probably be individual wave
files. Then, encode these files to FLAC for playback on your system.

Basically, this iso.wv formatting is VERY unconventional and it will be
an uphill battle for you if you keep it in that format.

Foobar 2k can convert a wavpack directly to individual flac files :-)
There is NO loss of anyhting in this process.

One beauty of Squeezebox playback is that the flac files will play back
gaplessly.

 1.

By default, the convert.conf file is set up to use SoX (7.5) or Flac
plus SoX (7.6), not Flac only, to stream WAV in Flac format. If you add
flac.exe to the system to do the encoding, then you need to add or
change the conversion rule. Typically this is done by creating a
 custom-convert.conf file containing the rule.

It could be that the standard convert.conf file that ships with the
SheevaPlug distribution specifies using only Flac, but if flac.exe
isn't included with the distro then it seems unlikely.

 2.

If flac.exe is unavailable, then the server should stream WAV as PCM
natively using the default settings, so requires no changes to the File
Types settings. I don't understand why wouldn't play.

I was assuming 7.6...
and yes I should have said it requires FLAC.exe AND SOX.exe...

WAV will not stream BY DEFAULT unless both are available (in 7.6)
You'd have to enable WAV-PCM in Filetypes

I have now bought one of these USB PhonoPlus jobbies to rip some of my

The default behaviour of SBS is to stream WAV files on disk as FLAC
over the network (with a single conversion at the server end if all
players are synched)... unless you manually change this. I was simply
asking why you would change this to stream 10 lots of WAV over the
network instead of 10 lots of FLAC - you seem to be going to some
trouble for zero benefit (and potentially network bandwidth issues,
although that may not affect you).
The format of the files on disk is irrelevant.
SBS can handle it fine, but many peoples networks (maybe not yours)
could have an issue.

They are not going to notice (or I suspect care) if the music is
streamed as 320k MP3 or fully loaded WAV files?

While I can see it is a big bash sounds like the host wants to
impress his guests, but surely nothing wrong with MP3 in that
 environment?

From the available data, very few people on the planet can reliably
tell the difference between streamed 320kbs mp3 and flac. Of those,
only a very tiny percentage even claim to be able to hear any
difference between an SB playing streamed flac or streamed WAV... and
their case is not borne out by any available measurement techniques.

You are playing these files in mono. That's going to have a much bigger
impact on the sound quality than the streaming format in some cases.
Just monoing (via cables or SOX) stereo files into mono will seriously
mess up some of them (i.e. the ones with out-of-phase l/r components -
many tracks from 1967-75 can surprise you).

Anyway, enjoy the party!

As others have said, I'd stream as FLAC or MP3 for a stress-free
party...

of time. However moving the server does not seem to have fixed the
 problems.

 Problems

 1) When I go start the SB 3 ( which is connected to my main Hi-Fi setup
) it regularly has to be powered off before it will connect to the
server. I normally have to do this to the Duet Receiver as well.

 2) My network gets flooded and I have to restart the SB 3. The SB 3
seems to flood the network. Whilst the network being flooded other
activities on the network come to a grinding halt and Music on the
Squeezebox only plays for a few seconds every minute.

 3) This is more of a general issue than a problem. The system is just
not wife friendly. Every time I go to show my wife how to use the
system, something goes wrong or the interface on the web or controllers
are too complex to be wife or family friendly.

I have had the system for several years but have had varying problems
over the years which have left me feeling that the solution it not
 really consumer friendly.

b.t.w. I have worked in IT for over 20 years, so do not have any issues
with setting the system up etc.

If I could at least resolve the issue where having to restart the SB 3
and Receiver frequently then I might be able to persuade the family to
 use the system.

 Thanks

Try giving the SB3 and the Server static IP addresses.

Also make sure that either the SB3 or the Server is WIRED to the router

That will let the OP control the server - but it isn't a player. I'm

Don't do that!
Set it to only import mixable status and point SBS at your flac folder

Thanks, but can you explain why?

The following are the instructions from the Integrating MusicIP with
 Sqeezecentre(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Integrating_MusicIP_with_SqueezeCenter)

configure SC to use MiP and remove any references in SC's setup to the
library path - SC will take its cue from MiP's database and it will
traverse the paths to your audio files as referenced in the MiP DB and
find your artwork etc. SC will still take Artist, album and Track data
from the audio files themselves. This approach also potentially
eliminates SC doing a triple scan - 1st the MiP database, then the
folders/ files it points to and then the path you've pointed to in SC's
library path. As far as I can ascertain, the last scan would be
redundant and just adds to your scanning time which we all know and
 love as it is :)

MusicIP would not work until I did this.

What aubuti said... Because it works if you do that! :-)

It would be neat if Logitech would licence SlimProto to other hardware
vendors... or even better, if someone were to write an adapter (and I
use that term very loosely) that would allow other hardware to emulate

Just a pipedream.

It's just that I don't see any post-Touch hardware arriving any time

I'm not unhappy with the Touch (far from it) but I like to have a

normalization. Particularly when listening to Random Mix, I'm still
constantly fiddling with volume on the player in the room that I'm in.
If someone were to sneak in and disable ReplayGain on all players, I'm
 not sure I'd notice.

 Your experience?

Never had that experience; never felt the need to reach for the volume
after initially setting it for a session (except to gradually turn it
up of course! - never to turn it down).

Are you sure RG is active on your setup/player? :-)

I don't keep switching between radio and library so the difference in

2011-07-18 Thread Phil Leigh

Are you using the TC as a DAC? - The problem is certainly within the TC
or more likely whatever the TC is connected to. S/PDIF cannot distort
or overload in the conventional sense, because there is nothing higher
than 0dB so if the distortion goes away when you lower the volume it
must be distorting in the analogue chain.

I’m struck by the fact that the signal output of the SPDIF is so high
(with some songs). I’ll try to compare them with the original CD
connected to the TC to investigate if there is a signal strength
 difference.

Yes but what is the TC feeding its analogue output into? (I'm familiar
with TC gear). Do you have all of the DSP functions of the TC (like the
limiter etc) turned off?

My bet is that the TC output is slightly too hot for the Cambridge -
all the evidence points to that.

Well, if you can't clearly hear that it is playing back at 96kHz (which

erm... you can't convert (in the conventional sense) a midi file to a

record the resultant sound. This would then be an audio file and could
not drive a midi device.
Nor can you use SBS to supply midi files to a midi device.

Yes. I read somewhere that some years ago there was a bug that caused
the output to be not bit perfect (inverted phase maybe? I don't

most people. (But as this is a question about audio quality, you -will-

what operating system?
transcoding as in the convert.conf mods above doesn't write to disk, it
is an in-memory operation... so unless your system is paging (ie very

Re: [slim] 24-bit audio (new article)

2011-03-21 Thread Phil Leigh

firedog;619600 Wrote:
From a thread on another forum designed to show the differences between
standard CD quality and hi-res recordings (same recording at different
 sampling rates and bit depth).

To my ears, the differences are clearly there, just as described. If
you can't discern them, then either your system isn't up to snuff or
 your ears need training.

IMO, the vast majority of listeners, if played these tracks, would say
they sound the same. They all sound good -they're from the same
master. It's just that when you know what to listen for, you can hear
 the difference.

from Bruce Brown's (Puget Sound) thread at
 http://www.whatsbestforum.com/showthread.php?2938-The-Art-of-Listening-Hi-rez-music

One thread (the one with the link here) lets you compare redbook to
higher res versions of the same music. You can clearly hear the
differences, as Bruce says below in the thread:

Here is a file that we recorded at a native 24/352.8 It starts off
with piano/drum. Do not listen to the music! Instead, concentrate on
the sticks hitting the cymbal. Listen to the attack/transient of the
initial hit. Listen to the tone and then the decay. Focus on just this
 one element.
Listen to the sound of the cymbals in the room. How big is the room?
What kind of space is this drummer in? Listen to the tone of the
 cymbal.
Now... as you go down to 176.4, then 88.2 and finally 16/44.1, listen
to these elements that I talked about above. Listen how the transient
attack becomes more dull. Notice how the tone of the cymbal changes
from crisp/pristine to dull and flat. Next, notice how the decay
becomes shorter and shorter and the room becomes smaller and more dry
 with less reverb.

To my ears, clear proof that the improvement with hi -res is audible.
You can hear the differences in transients and decay, and you can hear
that the room gets smaller at lower res. To me, in spite of what
others wrote on this thread, this makes a difference in real life.
The music sounds more realistic and differently situated in space.
Simply better - closer to the real thing, as you'd hear it if you
 were in the room.

And please don't start telling me I imagined it all.

I don't have a 352.8 DAC... and I have no way of knowing how the
downsampling from 352-176-88-44 was done...

I'll try a few things...

When you created the custom-convert.conf file, did you start by copying

I find it easier knowing which rules are standard by having only custom
rules in custom-convert.conf. When editing or debugging it's easy enough
to have both files open in an editor.

Because (for example) if someone was to post or paste here they'd have
to post/paste both files... to give us the full picture.

Also, things get particularly tricky to keep track of if you have
custom entries by player class and/or MAC...

With all respect, I think you (and I!) are more of a programmer than
many of the folks needing help with this stuff...

You should have an error message in scanner.log or server.log - your

 Thanks again.

That error message can be ignored. However, the Music scan terminated
unexpectedly error is a real problem.

It's hard to explain without a lot of typing, but what you are seeing
is a scan failure just before the last step (you will have artists, but
they won't be 100% correct) or a failure within the last step (0 artists
- they get lost at this point).

You need to get a Full rescan to run (a new and changed won't fix
your problem).

Use the SBS control panel to clear the cache, then do a full rescan.
Check SCANNER.LOG (only a full rescan writes to scanner.log) for
messages. Report back

Re: [slim] 24-bit audio (new article)

2011-03-08 Thread Phil Leigh

sebp;616378 Wrote:
 Hi Phil,

I had another challenging session last sunday, and I surprisingly had
the impression I could hear some differences this time.
I couldn't really tell I heard anything missing from the CD version,
but the HD file just sounded better to my ears.

As I don't trust them, I used Audacity's spectrum analyser with both
files, and looking at average gain values for some frequencies, they
always appeared to be a bit louder in the HD Version than in the CD
 version.
If you look at the screenshots, you'll see it's 4 dB louder for 100 Hz,
for example (-32dB is for the HD file, -36dB is for the CD file).

I then computed replaygains using foobar2000, and got -6.40dB for the
CD version and -6.02dB for the HD version.

So, downsampling 24/96 to 16/44.1 with SoX seems to lower the average
gain of the 16/44.1 version a little bit.

Is an average 0.38dB volume difference sufficient to be heard?
I can't tell for sure, but thought it would be worth mentioning...

Hi.
Whether or not you can hear a 0.38dB difference is highly debatable -
in my experience such things are barely audible... when mixing down, a
0.5dB lift/cut is barely noticeable and more often than not a 1-1.5dB
change is requird o register as different. Obviously this varies
slightly from person to person.

In this comparison, how were the 2 versions created? - using SOX to
downsample? - taking HD and CD versions from a commercial release
doesn't work as there is no way of knowing how the masters were
created.

By the way, the Audacity frequency spectrum analysis is highly suspect
- it isn't accurate...

The strange part is that I was challenging the files alone, and ignored
two friends of mine were doing the same.
One of them, who is more accustomed to comparisons than me, also
suspected his downsampled version was sounding lower.
 I only discovered that later.

I first compared commercial HD/CD downloads, and then rolled my own CD
 version from the HD file.
In both cases this 0.38dB volume difference existed.

I'll try using r8brain to check whether the volume difference also
 exists with that tool.

As I'm not an audio specialist, I wasn't sure my readings were right.
That's why I've computed replaygains to check.

How did you roll your own?

 OK, *that* makes sense...
All files scanned fine previously with 7.3x and 7.5x (I'm pretty

I don't expect this is related to the 'M' icon not appearing.

I'm considering downloading and installing an earlier build of 7.6

FWIW, this build of 7.6 doesn't appear any faster then 7.5 on a
medium-spec machine (atom 525, plenty of memory, MySQL innodb buffers
110% of database size and I kept boosting query cache until old
 queries stopped getting discarded).
I've gotten 7.5 to go faster, cache run from a ramdisk, but it's
currently not on ram (hard disk issues, hadn't done the ramdisk
shuffle, thought I'd take a stab at 7.6)

are you trying to run 7.6 with MYSQL? - this is broken.

Re: [slim] 24-bit audio (new article)

2011-03-02 Thread Phil Leigh

Cape11;614910 Wrote:
Well is it? Over sampling means there's no need for a filter, but my
point was that the frequency response is shaped like a cliff edge, and
over-ssampling can do nothing to remedy that under-lying condition. I
remain concerned about possible phase distortion into the audio band
which would have a deleterious effect on the leading edge of percusiion
instruments. And that's what I miss on CD (the clink on the triangle
when first hit, attack of piano notes) but get on LP.

I would think 192 ksps would suffice, which is 'sort of' the sampling
equivalent of SACD. If all these effects have been nailed, why is there
almost universal agreement that SACD is better than CD?

There is almost universal misunderstanding. I'll leave to one side the
fact that large parts of the upper spectrum of SACD's are full of
noise... thankfully we can't hear it :-)

As I keep saying, SACD playback is not inherently superior to
redbook... in terms of what we can hear. That's the whole point of the
Meyer/Moran paper. They inserted a redbook adc-dac chain in the midst
of an SACD playback chain. Nobody could hear it! (this isn't the basis
for my argument, which I've been developing for years - it just neatly
backs it up).

What CAN BE better is the mastering job done to produce the SACD
(sometimes - there are some pretty ropey SACD's out there too...).

Don't be fooled into comparing the redbook and sacd layers of a hybrid
disk - they often don't use the same master, rendering the comparison
pointless. Of course, far be it for me to suggest that record companies
would deliberately make the expensive SACD layer sound better :-)

To reiterate, it's NOT the playback technology, it's the mastering.
Redbook can sound identical to SACD.

By the way, that frequency response cliff exists on many SACD's too...
