When you hit the 4 again you changed the default rhythm from 8th note triplets
to 8th notes. If you don't enter a new rhythm, you'll keep getting 8th note
triplets.

That doesn't work for me (Win10, Finale25) -- I enter Speedy Entry,
press the Caps Lock, ctrl-3, then 4 and I can enter 1 set of 8th-note
triplets. The caps lock has stayed engaged, but hitting 4 after that
first triplet set just gives me regular 8th notes, not triplets.

For each beat you restart with Ctrl-3. I wish there were a quicker way like
Sibelius does where you can set up a bracket and hit the R (repeat) key and it
will continue to create triplets as long as you want them.

Re: [Finale] printing advice

2018-04-29 Thread Lee Actor
The HP 5000 is indeed 1200 dpi. I don't consider 600 dpi good enough for
publishable-quality music -- e.g., aliasing (stairstepping) is visible on
angled beams and cresc./decresc.

I had a lot of problems with jamming when I had a duplexer for my HP 5000
(ultimately I returned it). I bought a refurbished unit in 2004, and it
wouldn't duplex 11x17 at all. You may remember Andrew Stiller, who was a
frequent contributor to the Finale mailing list before he passed away; he had a
lot of experience with the HP 5000 duplexer and advised cleaning the rollers
with alcohol, which did help. According to Andrew -- I think he had gone
through 2 duplexers at that point -- the duplexer works fine when new, but
deteriorates significantly over time, until after a couple of years of heavy
use it won't work at all (even cleaning the rollers didn't help at that point).
Since a new unit was unavailable even in 2004, I chalked it up to a flawed
design and went back to manual duplexing.

I hope HP has learned to make more reliable duplexers over the years. The one
in my HP M712DN does seem much more "industrial strength" than the HP 5000
duplexer, and I've been using it for more than 2 years without a single jam.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Does anyone have trouble with the duplexer jamming? If so, is there a good fix?

Re: [Finale] printing advice

2018-04-28 Thread Lee Actor
I've had an HP5000 since 2001 and have printed much music with it. Years ago I
tried the duplexer for it, but found it to be unreliable, at least with the
heavyweight paper I use.

I kept my eye on the large format laser printer market for a long time, and 2+
years ago finally bit the bullet and bought a HP M712DN (1200dpi) at a huge
discount. This machine has been an absolute dream. The duplexer is 100%
reliable; I have never had a paper jam or misfeed the entire time I've owned
it. I use it exclusively to print music, and keep heavyweight letter and 11x17
paper in its two paper trays. It's 4-5x faster than the LJ5000, and has saved
me innumerable hours printing orchestral parts and scores. With the HP5000 I
had to manually feed the flip side of duplexed pages to avoid paper jams,
requiring my constant attention throughout a large print job; but with the
M712DN I can send it as many print jobs as needed and immediately get back to
what I was doing, letting the printer churn away until it's done. There's
still the folding/stapling/trimming/binding etc. to produce finished sheet
music, but my time involved with the actual printing has been reduced by as
much as 95%.

The main downside to the M712DN is that it is quite large, and weighs 85 lbs.;
definitely a 2-person job to pick it up and move it around. But it's the
biggest productivity enhancement I've encountered since engraving software.

Dear Chuck and Robert,

Thank you! All I needed to do was to ask the printer preferences to find and
add the HP5000 printer again (IP address from the printer’s info page). I
should have figured this out on my own. For some reason, this was vastly easier
than the initial time I was forced to print over IP (at the point when
appletalk disappeared from macs). And that first IP connection has survived
through at least 3 machine and many system upgrades.

What a great machine! Still going after all these years. 1200 dpi, or 600 dpi
at super speed, long-lasting printer cartridges (shockingly, still available as
OEM). Granted, I don’t use it very heavily, but still, it is, by far, the
oldest technology in my house. 25 years old sounds about right.

Re: [Finale] Finale Linked Parts: what's missing?

2018-04-22 Thread Lee Actor
I already enter all cues in my "extracted parts" score, no pasting between
docusments.
I also change several "parts only" items globally once, in the same score.
Same with elements colliding in all parts (rare in my experience).

You're right about later edits potentially having to be done in multiple
files, but for me it's rare that a later edit needs to be done in more than
1 or 2 files. To me, a bigger danger in doing later edits in linked parts
is that I might inadvertently have Auto music spacing or multimeasure rests
on, where a minor edit in one part can affect a different part that will
likely go unnoticed.

I don't mean to be argumentative; I really am interested in the best work
flow. But isn't saying that fewer files is a HUGE time saver something of
an overstatement?

Ooh, ooh, ooh! I got this!

Fewer files is a HUGE time saver! You can enter all the cues with copy and
paste (or the plugin, which I find buggy) without pasting between documents,
you can change the font sizes for tempi and rehearsal letters ONCE (or
anything else ONCE) and have it apply to all parts at once, if you find
something colliding in all parts you move it ONCE and it is solved
everywhere, and you can take advantage of JW Copy Part Layout to regularize
the page layout. Later edits, too, have to be done twice (once in the score
file, once in the part file) but in extracted parts you have to make edits
in ALL files, which can be maddening.

My solution for many of these things (and I think many others have the
same workflow) is to have one file for the score and one file for the
(linked) parts. This is not as good as one file for everything, but it's
better than a bunch of separate files for extracted parts.

Given this workflow, in your parts file you could explode your wind parts
so that everything is one part per staff, and then cues are easier. Your #2
and #3 are also easy to accomplish this way.

This also takes care of other things that are not currently unlinkable in
Finale. (At least, they weren't in Fin2011; I haven't really dived into
Fin25 yet.) For example, I like to use a bigger font for tempo markings and
rehearsal numbers in my score than I do in parts.

Aaron.

Your 2) and 3) are not correct. Music spacing is not linked between score and
parts. You can also change clef in parts with staff styles (transposition>set
to clef) in part only. 1) and 4) are valid, though.

Re: [Finale] Finale Linked Parts: what's missing?

2018-04-22 Thread Lee Actor
I'm not a regular user of linked parts -- yes, I still make a copy of the
score and extract from there -- but I did make a reasonable effort several
years ago to incorporate them into my normal work flow. I gave up after a
month or so due to encountering too many situations that required special
workarounds, and decided linked parts were costing me more time than they
were saving.

So given my admittedly limited knowledge, here are some items that I found
to be more trouble in linked parts than it's worth:
1) Cues are a mess, esp. in orchestral scores with 2 wind parts on a staff.
2) Can't have different music spacing in score and parts. I like my parts
closer spaced than the score.
3) Can't have different clefs in score and part (e.g., a high bassoon 1 part
might mean tenor clef for bassoon 2 in the score, but should be bass clef in
the part).
4) Grace note spacing.

I encountered other issues which can be fairly attributed to pilot error,
and some of the above problems may have already been addressed. I'm ready
to embrace linked parts, as soon as the pain of special cases and
workarounds is exceeded by the benefits. Obviously this is a subjective
judgement.

Subject: [Finale] Finale Linked Parts: what's missing?

I am starting a new thread because my comments seem to be buried in the
recent Dorico thread. I would like to poll this list about what features
are missing from Linked Parts. I am doing so with an eye towards a possible
plugin to address what can be addressed.

Things that cannot be addressed by a plugin are
* allowing special tools in voiced parts
* unlinking items that Finale currently can't unlink manually

The kinds of things that are likely to be addressable are in the area of
page layout. In fact I already have a plugin that can copy a page layout
from one part to another. And Jari has made one that copies everything down
to the note spacing. But maybe there are things we've missed or U.I. issues.

What prompts this request is the discussion of Dorico "layouts" which seem
very similar to linked parts in Finale. I'm curious if there is
functionality there that a plugin could bring to Finale.

Re: [Finale] Exporting parts to PDF

2018-04-02 Thread Lee Actor
Whenever the built-in Finale pdf exporter is mentioned, I feel obligated to
point out that a) it has serious bugs, printing unwanted characters in
unexpected locations, esp. on pages with tuplets; and b) it produces
enormous file sizes, up to 10x other print-to-pdf solutions. The pdf export
is from a 3rd party developer, Makemusic knows it's broken, and they
continue to include it in Finale anyway.

The pdf printer I always recommend for Windows is Bullzip. It's extremely
stable, very fast, and produces the smallest file sizes of any such product
I've surveyed -- and I've tried pretty much all of them.

Hi all,

I just took advantage of the sale at MM to upgrade to Fin25, and I'm
exploring some of the new features. (And wondering why they haven't improved
the UI in 5 years, but that's a different issue.)

I noticed the new Export to PDF feature, which is quicker and easier than
printing to a PDF driver, but I was dismayed to find that it only exports
the current part or score. Did they really not implement an Export Linked
Parts to PDF feature, as they did with Export Linked Parts to MusicXML? Is
there a plugin or FinaleScript that will provide this functionality?

Thanks,

Hi Finale List!

I have recently started to work with Rachmaninov's B minor prelude (Op.
32, No. 10). It features a LOT of triplets, and the one that is giving me
the biggest problem is the opening motive of dotted 8th-16th-8th as a
triplet covering one quarter note beat. The note durations all add up to
three eighth notes, so they should fit in a standard eighth-note triplet,
but Finale (Win2K9) is acting like there is something wrong.

If I turn off the option to check for extra notes, I can put it in, and the
"Check Durations" plugin finds no problems, but it's a bit of a pain.

Any ideas what to do because that particular rhythm is EVERYWHERE in this
piece.

Thanks,

Adam

Re: [Finale] Finale 2012 Printing parts from a PDF file

2017-12-19 Thread Lee Actor
I just did a quick test on a recent Finale file. Results:

Microsoft Print to PDF: 701K
Bullzip: 328K

Both had all fonts embedded and look similar on screen under high
magnification (though with Bullzip I can specify the internal resolution in
dpi). Perhaps some of the difference is that I have the Bullzip default set
to B output, while Microsoft probably makes all pdfs 24-bit color.
Personally, I want all my music pdfs to be B The Microsoft solution
appears to have no configuration options other than paper size and
orientation. Good to know that it's there, though.

Windows 10 now includes the ability for all apps to print to PDF without

Re: [Finale] PDF export and placed graphics

2017-09-12 Thread Lee Actor
If Finale itself is the source of the bug which doesn't output placed
graphics correctly, you're right -- a different pdf engine wouldn't make any
difference. However, the Finale pdf exporter has been seriously broken for
a long time, tending to strew random characters across pages which have lots
of tuplets (among other problems). Makemusic verified this bug years ago,
but apparently still hasn't gotten it fixed (the pdf exporter is 3rd party
software, so they can't fix directly). Additionally, the Finale built-in
pdf export is very slow and produces humungous file sizes, up to 10x other
print-to-pdf solutions; I recommend avoiding it if at all possible. I've
evaluated many of the print-to-pdf apps, and IMHO the best is Bullzip, which
is fast, full-featured, produces very small file sizes, and is solid as a
rock. Plus it's free for individual use:

A few weeks ago I posed a question to the list about the best way to merge
documents. I got some interesting responses. I was ultimately unsatisfied
with the range of options available, so I decided give myself (and by

The result of these labors is included in a new release of my plugin

strategies for merging documents, including opting to merge PDFs instead. I
think I included most of the ideas expressed in that thread, but if the
collective wisdom of the list has suggestions, additions, or corrections, I
would be interested in hearing them.

Re: [Finale] Access to Tempo Tool in FinMac 25

2016-11-06 Thread Lee Actor
That's interesting -- in Win Fin2012 it's the 4th item in the MIDI Tool
menu, right after Edit Continuous Data. Very easy to do JW Tempo
functionality by selecting a region, and choosing "Scale".

Can someone with FinWin 25 please check the MIDI Tool menu and see if Edit
Tempo is there?

I don't see "Edit Tempo" even in Mac Fin2012. Could this be a Win thing?

There is no guarantee JW Tempo will continue to produce useful results in
future Finale releases. But my guess is Makemusic will probably not expend
any effort to intentionally disable it either. Right now it works just fine.

I'm also distressed about the elimination of the Tempo Tool in the new

[Finale] Tempo tool in Fin 25

2016-08-18 Thread Lee Actor
Am I the only one who is distressed by the elimination of the Tempo Tool in
the new version of Finale? One of the reviews I read referred to it as a
welcome clean-up of an unnecessary feature that no one used. Hey, I use it
all the time! At least in conjunction with the legacy JW Tempo plugin, as I
don't trust Human Playback to sculpt tempo changes the way I'd like.

Can someone who has installed v25 please tell me whether you can at least
use Edit Tempo in the MIDI menu? I guess that would be an adequate
substitute for the Tempo Tool. And I suppose it's too much to hope that the
MIDI Tool has finally gotten a long-needed overhaul; as far as I can tell,
the same bugs have been there for the last 20 years.

Curious how much faster you would say 2012 is, and to what size of file

bullet and upgrading, it seems I inevitably come across a comment on Fin2014

Re: [Finale] Printing two letter size PDFs to ledger size paper- possible?

2016-06-06 Thread Lee Actor
For PCs, I highly recommend Fineprint, which is configured as a printer
driver and can be printed to from any application. It can handle duplexing,
scaling, n-up printing, booklets, etc. What I do is define a virtual
printer for every flavor of score and parts printing I ever use, and
printing any of them requires no fussing or extra work. You also see a
preview of what will be printed before the printer starts chewing up paper.
Very easy to use, and well worth the few bucks it costs.

Re: [Finale] Score Printing Question

2016-03-25 Thread Lee Actor
I have long been a proponent of 11x14 orchestral scores, which is what I've
used in all 23 large ensemble works I've produced over the past 15 years. I
find it to be an ideal combination of size and shape. Legal (8.5x14) is
uncomfortably narrow, necessitating excessive page turns, and tabloid
(11x17) is unwieldy, tends to be floppy on many music stands, and doesn't
fit in most briefcases. The only time I would consider tabloid is for
scores pushing 30 or more staves, which are most likely concert band pieces,
and the occasional large orchestral score where additional divisi staves are
unavoidable (composers, please combine wind parts to the traditional 2 per
staff unless voice crossings make it infeasible; I know it makes it harder
to extract parts, but conductors will thank you -- or at least not curse
you).

Subject: [Finale] Score Printing Question

Hi, Finale people,

I am getting some large orchestra scores ready for printing, and it
has been a long time since I outsourced this and had scores printed
and bound by an actual print shop. This was in the 90s and
pre-digital, ad I know everything has changed.

For the past few decades I have been writing and printing scores and
parts for use in recording sessions, and both traditional legal and
letter size paper, and printing in my own studio laser printer for
that work. When I have sent scores or parts out for others to print
(other performer grips) I have sent out pdfs of my finale files, but
they were always the usual 81/2 x 11 (or 14) format, and that was fine
for studio work, and, to some degree, for performance. Parts look
fine in that format, but scores are better in the larger, wider
format.

Now I have recently returned to writing (and re-issuing) some larger
orchestral works, and "legal"-length paper, which is fine for legal
work, is not the best for full orchestra scores. My old, commercially
printed scores, vary in size and shape, so I'm not sure what would be
best for these new scores.

I wold love information for those of you who are in the U.S. and have
had scores printed in a larger format. What dimensions do you find
best for large or fairly large full orchestra? How do you go about
getting them printed and bound. If you have them done by a commercial
printer, I would be particularly interested in sources in the New
Yokr, L.A., or San Francisco areas. That said, in this digital age,
these things can be done anywhere, so any information about the
successful procedures done anywhere would be much appreciated.

I suppose providing music for download and print, I will have to stick
with legal-size paper for scores, but I'd like to have the option of a
more usable, readable size and format to make physical scores.

Thanks in advance for any advice or information.

Re: [Finale] Preferred method for entering notes/etc into finale2012

2016-02-17 Thread Lee Actor
My setup is MIDI keyboard to my left, perpendicular to the computer keyboard
and monitor. Left hand on the MIDI keyboard, right hand on the number
keypad makes for very fast note entry. As the MIDI keyboard is full-size 88
keys, I can instantly enter any note in any octave, plus of course when
there are multiple notes entered on the same beat it is done in a single
step. To each his own, but I'm very fast using my method and like it a lot.

After using Finale for over 25 years and trying out all methods of note
entry,
I can say without any doubt that David's method is the fastest and, once you
become practised at it, the most accurate.

Left hand on the up/down arrows for the pitch and right hand on the number
pad keys for the durations. When copying sheet music I now only need to
glance at the screen every once in a while and never at my fingers - I can
keep my eyes firmly on the original music for long periods and this makes
it very fast indeed. There are many keyboard shortcuts and you can set up
metatools to make things even faster. Taking my hand away to use a MIDI
keyboard would really slow me down, as does using the mouse.

Don't be tempted into thinking that scanning music or using Hyperscribe will
speed things up, it doesn't. It ends up as a mess which you have to spend
even more time cleaning up.

Here's where I differ from David and agree with Mike G. It takes a long,
long time fiddling with all the settings and making expression and
articulation
libraries etc, before you get them the way you want. A blank template file
stores them all, instantly ready for the next project. I do have one
template
in a particular style for a publisher, but mostly I use my own "house
style".

2016-02-15 Thread Lee Actor
I reported this bug almost 3 years ago in Finale 2012, verified by Makemusic
tech support; apparently still not fixed. It's a bug in the 3rd party pdf
exporter used by Makemusic, so they can't fix it directly. The stray
characters tend to show up on pages with lots of triplets, but as I recall
there are other problems as well. In addition, the Finale built-in pdf
export is slow and produces humungous file sizes, up to 10x other
print-to-pdf solutions; even if it wasn't buggy, I would stay far away from
it. I've tried many print-to-pdf apps (and even paid for some), and my
current favorite by far is Bullzip, which is fast, full-featured, produces
very small file sizes, and is solid as a rock. Plus it's free for
individual use: http://bullzip.com/products/pdf/info.php (sorry Mac people,

several years now and wouldn't think of using anything else.

Hi all,

Here's an image comparing export-to-PDF vs. print-to-PDF.

<http://maltedmedia.com/images/finale/export-vs-print.jpg>

The export has those stray "3" characters at the bottom of page 2. I can't
locate them in the Finale file. They appear to be slightly larger versions
of
the "3" that I use for tuplets.

I've zoomed out in both page and scroll view to see if they were scattered
somewhere way out of view. No luck.

Any clues on how to find them? And why they might only appear in a Finale
export-to-PDF and not the print-to-PDF? They don't appear on other files
that
use the same template.

Just hate this when it's a client. I can live with the poorer screen display

Re: [Finale] Finale Digest, Vol 149, Issue 7

2015-12-14 Thread Lee Actor
The JW "Measure Numbers" plugin deals with actual measure numbers and
measure number regions; unless I missed something, it doesn't number
repeated measures like the built-in plugin does (automatically placing small
numerals above a sequence of consecutive identical measures). The built-in
plugin worked fine in versions of Finale before expressions were sorted into
categories; now (at least in Fin2012; I don't know about Fin2014) invoking
the plugin shifts unrelated expressions into the Miscellaneous category.
Not good.

broken? At least the version that comes with WinFin2012c is. It does do
the repeated measure numbering as expected, but has the behind-the-scenes
side effect of moving certain pre-existing expressions into other categories
(generally, "Miscellaneous"). Of course, this potentially wreaks havoc on
the placement of the misplaced expressions, which may be easy to overlook.
Does anyone know of an alternative, or if this plugin is fixed in the
current version?

Re: [Finale] PDF EXPORT missing fonts

2015-10-21 Thread Lee Actor
Possibly the fonts aren't recognized by Windows, though Finale can obviously
access them; check Control Panel->Appearance and Personalization->Fonts to
see if they are listed; if not, you could try installing them from the File
menu.

You should be aware that the pdf export feature in WinFin2012c has a bug
that generates extraneous characters, usually at the bottom of pages
containing triplets. I reported this bug to Makemusic in Nov. 2013; it's a
known bug in the 3rd party pdf export engine they use, and to the best of my
knowledge it has not been fixed in Fin2014 to date. You might consider
using one of the many available "pdf printer" products, which install as a
printer driver and enable pdfs to be produced from any application which can
print. I've tried many of them, and my current favorite is Bullzip
(http://bullzip.com/products/pdf/info.php). It's fast, full-featured,
produces very small file sizes, and is solid as a rock. Even better, it's
free for individual use.

One other thing: the Finale pdf export, in addition to being buggy, produces
files 5-6x bigger than any other pdf tool I've used.

What's the issue with long-throw staplers? I've been using one (PaperPro) for
years; reliable, consistent alignment and effortless stapling. Don't you have
to prefold the paper for a saddle stapler? Stapling first then folding works
great for me, but I'm open to adopting a superior method.

Hi Darcy,

Ah yes, now heres the rub!

Printing uneven numbered parts booklet style in Finale is somewhat fussier. You
need to create the required extra blank pages to reach any multiple of four. So
seven pages of music will require an extra blank page added at the end. This is
often a consideration when Im doing my layout.

Yes, the Swingline saddle stapler is a life saver! Ive seen too many people
try to use a long reach stapler for this purposeboo!

All the best,
Greg

I don't have a non-manual booklet printing solution for Mac, but on Windows I
highly recommend FIneprint, which I've been using for more than a decade. I
never have to worry about blank pages, page order, or scaling.

I'm still using the venerable HP Laserjet 5000; though it's been pretty
reliable for the past 15 years, I'm thinking about replacing it with the newer
HP Laserjet M712DN, mainly for the duplexer (I did have a duplexer on the 5000
for a while, but it was not reliable, esp. on ledger-sized paper). Does anyone
have any experience with the M712, particularly duplexing ledger size? It
would be a great timesaver not to have to fuss with manual feeding.

 Hi all,

So after a year and a half of owning a Ricoh AP6330N, I have somewhat
sheepishly just today discovered it can actually handle 12x18 paper. (I
had until now just assumed that it had the same size limitations as its
predecessor, the Ricoh AP2610, which maxed out at 11x17. In retrospect this
 was really, really dumb.)

Obviously that is a bit of a game changer for me! I have previously been
printing on individual 9x12 sheets and taping them using the VPC machine.
This is no longer necessary (or remotely desirable) now that I know I can
 print directly to 12x18.

I'm curious what people's workflow is to create booklet parts on a Mac
presumably it's best print to PDF first, then use booklet software to
assemble the 12x18 signatures? Are there apps that people would recommend for
this purpose? I have Bookbinder's Collator, but it's not the most intelligent
piece of software I've ever used.

Re: [Finale] implode music

2014-11-25 Thread Lee Actor
If you mean a double accidental on, say, a unison C# that appears in both
layers, that's the way Fin2012 is designed (incorrectly) to work. The
workaround is to hide the accidental in one of the layers -- and making sure
it still shows up in the part. This feature -- ok, bug -- was not present
in earlier versions, which correctly made the unison accidentals coincident.
I think I remember reading that this has been corrected in Fin2014.

If you mean a double accidental on non-unison notes, I don't have a clue.

That occurred to me too; I should have mentioned that each staff has its own

Yes, I've seen exactly this phenomena too, except it was trombones in
my case. Although I had Troms 1 and 2 on separate staves, they were set
to use the same MIDI channel, and the hanging notes occurred when both
parts played the same note together (in unison). I'm wondering if that
might be the case with your clarinets. The answer was to give each part
its own channel.

[Finale] Bizarre playback bug

2014-10-16 Thread Lee Actor
Finale 2012c on Win7, GPO4

On a 25-stave band score, the default for one of the percussion staves is
Basic Orchestral Percussion; there's a passage where it changes to glock,
then at a later point changes to xylophone for the rest of the piece. I
found that I needed the default percussion again for the last 4 measures, so
I deleted the instrument change to xylo, then used the Change Instrument
utility to select xylo for a range of measures that excluded the last 4
bars. No problems with playback on that staff.

However, the notes for one of the clarinet staves play but now do not turn
off. Even All Notes Off under MIDI/Audio doesn't turn them off. I have to
either exit Finale, or open up the Aria player and reload the bank for that
staff to halt the hideous tone cluster. I reverted to a previous version of
the file and all is fine until I delete and recreate the xylo instrument
change. The eternal clarinet notes then return under some playback
conditions I haven't completely determined yet.

Has anyone seen something similar to this?

 Finale 2012c on Win7, GPO4

On a 25-stave band score, the default for one of the percussion staves is
Basic Orchestral Percussion; there's a passage where it changes to glock,
then at a later point changes to xylophone for the rest of the piece. I
found that I needed the default percussion again for the last 4 measures,
so
I deleted the instrument change to xylo, then used the Change Instrument
utility to select xylo for a range of measures that excluded the last 4
bars. No problems with playback on that staff.

However, the notes for one of the clarinet staves play but now do not turn
off. Even All Notes Off under MIDI/Audio doesn't turn them off. I have
to
either exit Finale, or open up the Aria player and reload the bank for
that
staff to halt the hideous tone cluster. I reverted to a previous version
of
the file and all is fine until I delete and recreate the xylo instrument
change. The eternal clarinet notes then return under some playback
conditions I haven't completely determined yet.

Has anyone seen something similar to this?

[Finale] Muted trumpet playback

2014-09-29 Thread Lee Actor
Finale 2012c, GPO 4. When I use any KS patch for trumpets, they play muted
when encountering con sord. But they seemingly stay muted forever; senza
sord., mute off, norm., nothing gets them to remove the mutes. When I
use con sord./senza sord. for strings, it works as expected. For now I'm
using non-KS patches so the trumpets never mute, but I'd like to get it to
work. I'm using a custom Human Playback style with almost everything turned
off, except slurs, trills/ornaments/tremolos, haripins/dynamics, and
glissandi/bends; 0% on all slider controls. What am I missing?

The patch for mute is apparently set up right, but you have to change
the playback patch for 'senza sord' back to 'trumpet' alone. That should
do it.

Re: [Finale] Breath Mark Playback

2014-07-09 Thread Lee Actor
What I do is shorten the note playback length -- either via the breath mark
definition, or by adjusting the MIDI stop value -- and manually insert a
tempo change just before the breath mark. Depending on where you place the
tempo change and what value you choose, you can make both the pause and the
note before the pause last any length you want. Of course, you need to
manually add another tempo change following the pause to restore the
previous tempo. This method is easier than it sounds.

Anyone care to discuss playback with respect to breath marks? I'm not

appears to be the default HP) doesn't really seem to jibe with reality
 -
what music really sounds like when performed - nor definition. Maybe
 I've

 breath
mark to indicate the place to breathe (in vocal or instrumental)
 resulting
in something of a short break - not quite a caesura, but *something*.

This doesn't have to do with my own music - it's for a client who
 wants to
hear that brief pause without shortening the full value of the note to

 could
put in a hidden rest, but that changes the time-sig - or a zero-width

Chances are that the print dialog is still there, behind the Finale window.
Same problem with Finale 2012 (Win7), which insists on being on top when it
shouldn't; this happens for me in print dialogs and the 3rd party pdf
printer I use. BTW, the internal pdf generator has known bugs in both
Finale 2012 and 2014 -- it produces stray triplet 3 characters along the
bottom of certain pages -- plus the pdf's it produces are 4-5 times larger
at the same quality level than other pdf software I've used.

My first thought when reading about the reorganization at MakeMusic is
that the new owners, being venture capitalists and not software
developers, are looking to reshape the Finale team so they can make it
more marketable to another company such as Cakewalk.

Steinberg is developing their own notation program, Avid has Sibelius to
go along with ProTools, Presonus bought up Notion, so the only
independent notation program is Finale.

Thinking like a venture capitalist, that's what I would do -- invest in
modernizing the code so that it could more easily be incorporated into
another product line, get a new upgrade out the door to recoup some of
the investment as well as prove to potential corporate buyers that
there's a thriving marketplace still, then unload just Finale or
possibly the whole company or spinoff SmartMusic on its own and sell
that also to some educational software company.

Only time will tell -- in the meantime I'm satisfied with Finale2014, at
least so far.

The only problem I've run into is that when I print, if I need to change
something in the printer driver, such as duplexing, once I OK that
dialog the entire Finale Print dialog disappears. Then when I click
Print again in Finale, the computer beeps at me as if I was a stupid
fool and Finale's print dialog appears again. I have no idea if that's
a Finale problem, a Win8.1/Finale-combination problem or what, but it's
annoying since I can't set up the duplexing from within Finale's print
dialog.

cross-layer option fixes this, but of course messes up accidental
positioning in most other multi-layer situations. These settings produced
proper results in Fin2004; not sure when it changed.

I realize I can simply hide one of the accidentals, but that leaves open the
possibility that it doesn't get reset properly in the part.

[Finale] Hairpin bug?

2013-01-30 Thread Lee Actor
The edit point on the small end of a hairpin doesn't coincide with the
screen display, esp. under higher magnifications. The point of the hairpin
is displayed on screen beyond the edit point, while the two coincide when
printing, which makes editing a pain. I have the impression that this has
been the case for the last several versions of Finale. Has anyone reported

[Finale] Possible bug

2013-01-21 Thread Lee Actor
Is this a bug, or is it just me: editing a linked part, I change the end
point of a multimeasure rest to accommodate a clef change in the following

the end point of the multimeasure rest has been reset to the default value.
In fact, edits to the end points of multimeasure rests in all linked parts
are reset to the default value. My default value for the end point is -20,

My mistake; I had this option checked when it shouldn't have been. But this
has spurred me to completely abandon linked parts and go back to extracting
parts. That way, when there's a problem, even if it's my fault, at least
it's limited to the part I'm editing, and doesn't have far-reaching affects

marginal advantages, and I have no interest in going to lengths to make a

[Finale] Linked parts

2013-01-06 Thread Lee Actor
To those of you who are enthusiastic proponents of linked parts, I have a
question: how do you keep your sanity? In a word: with all the parts in a
single file, if something goes wrong, EVERYTHING goes wrong.

I'm working on the parts for a 150+ page orchestral score, with the score
locked down in one file, and a copy of the score for editing parts -- there
just seems to me to be too many hoops to jump through to make everything
work in a single file, and compromises I'm not willing to make (like
inability to have different music spacing factors in score and parts). Even
with my finalized score safely out of harm's way, I'm finding it
distressingly easy to inadvertently mess up a carefully laid-out part while
working on another part of the score (mostly while adding and adjusting
cues). No doubt this is due to my relative inexperience with linked parts,
but having to treat your tools like you're always walking on eggshells is
not conducive to productivity. It's got me seriously thinking about going
back to extracting parts, which at least has the advantage that you can't
inadvertently mess up the flute part while you're editing the oboe part.

I'm having a hard time coming up with practical reasons for the superiority
of linked parts -- in terms of productivity, not in terms of design or
concept. Having something change in a part not being worked on is a
nightmare to me, and I have no problem with having 25 different files in a
project instead of one or two. I'd really like to hear from more
experienced linked parts fans as to what advantages I'm overlooking.

2013-01-06 Thread Lee Actor
Thanks for your comments. I'm sure many of the issues I've seen have to do
with auto-spacing being on. Still, the concept that I can make an
admittedly stupid error in one place, and not catch it for some time because
the effect is another place entirely, makes me queasy.

I have no doubt that one can, with enough workarounds and tiptoeing about,
make linked parts work. My question remains, what compelling reasons are
there for doing so? It still seems to me that using linked parts is more
work, not less.

this is indeed stupid, but i have resolved the problem simply by
doing EVERYTHING in the score layout first before spacing parts.

Re: [Finale] Rehearsal marks

2012-12-29 Thread Lee Actor
Yes, I noticed this new behavior of items attached to hidden staves in a
score list appearing in the next lower staff. That usually works well for
my case of one rehearsal mark on the top staff and another on a staff
further down the page. However, when all the staves above the 2nd rehearsal
mark staff are hidden, I'm left with only one rehearsal mark. I've taken
Robert's suggestion and defined the score list to include a third staff, and
most of the time I hide the rehearsal marks assigned to it.

[Finale] Clefs in linked parts

2012-12-25 Thread Lee Actor
Is it really true that the clef in a part can't be unlinked from the clef in
the score? There's a legitimate need for this, e.g., a bassoon or trombone
staff shared by 2 parts, both of which in the score are in tenor clef (to
save space), but the lower voice in the part should be in bass clef (for
readability). Not that common, but when you need it, you need it.

And what about a passage using 8va in the score, but written at pitch in the
part? This sometimes happens in high flute and violin parts. Is this
possible?

Hi all,

This may be stating the obvious, but pixels matter. Most large displays
still top out at HD resolution (1920 x 1080). That's what I have, and I'm
always wishing I had more real estate.

Apple's 27 displays are expensive but they contain significantly more
pixels (2560-by-1440). A few other manufacturers also make 2560-by-1440
pixel displays -- none of them are exactly cheap, but if you can afford it,
might as well get the most pixels you can afford.

with duplex unit. Considering a used HP 5100 but I'm somewhat wary of the
uncertainty of used models, any tips?

Re: [Finale] transposing / linked parts / that acci bug

2012-11-27 Thread Lee Actor
I compose directly into Finale (transposed score, chromatic, no key
signatures), and often input notes in their transposed (i.e., as written)
form. I admit, it can be disconcerting to hear the wrong pitch when
entering notes. But when I do enter notes in concert pitch, I don't switch
the score to display in concert pitch; instead I chromatically transpose the
passage up a fifth or major second or whatever after entry. Maybe slightly
less efficient than toggling the switch to display in concert pitch, but I
rarely encounter the dreaded 9-key enharmonic bug (which I use all the
time).

Hi Chris,

I did not know this. This is obviously deeply stupid. I even use Transposed
Scores! But when composing, I make the switch *after* entering the notes,
and I suspect it's the same for anyone else who composes directly into
Finale, without making detailed sketches on paper first.

The 2012B release has a nice feature that automatically highlights notes
that Finale thinks are out of range. Previously there was a plug-in to
do this. In the plug-in you could select beginner-intermediate-advanced
to fine-tune the range. I have looked around and I cannot find any way
to control the settings for this automatic range checking.

Has anybody found how to do this? I don't see anything n the UI. Maybe
there are some editable filed that control this.

Re: [Finale] ScoreManager in 2012b

To answer my own question, I think it had something to do with the Aria
engine version being out of sync with the Aria player. When I reinstalled
GPO4 and then the Fin2012b update (which installs Aria 1.5 for both engine

happen is not what I would consider a robust software installation design,
esp. considering that Makemusic now owns Garritan.

Hope this helps someone else.

Align dynamics works (whew!), but shift accidentals spins for a while
and then dies (this is on Win7 x64). To my eye, the default spacing for
accidentals in a chord is much too wide, and it's very painful to adjust
these without an automated tool.

Also, smart explosion usually crashes Finale completely, which means a lot
more work generating parts -- at least until linked parts can gracefully
handle multi-part staves, cues, and different music spacing for scores and
parts.

I'm using the latest TGT, which on Win is 2.61, and the shift accidentals
plugin doesn't work at all for me. My comment on default spacing of
accidentals being too wide was meant to refer to the Finale default for
notes a fifth or sixth apart, which is what I need the TGT plugin for. It
helps some if I change the default spacing between accidentals in doc
options from 8 to 5 EVPUs, but this one-size-fits-all approach isn't nearly
as good as the plugin was. I want my plugin back!

BTW, the plugin never did work properly for chords of more than 2 notes, not
a particularly frequent occurrence for me. It does seem very strange that
this plugin chokes on my system and not on yours.

i am however discovering that it isn't shifting on some notes, will

hm, sounds like you haven't explored the settings in the accis tab
for accis between 4th, 5ths and 6ths, or the sixths tabs which has
even more fine-tuning. also, you prob won't need it (the default
settings work even with my custom font), but you can also adjust the
values the PI considers to be the default widths of nat b # bb and x.

or if you mean the finale default, you can change this in the doc options.

[Finale] Document styles vs. templates

2012-06-27 Thread Lee Actor
I'm trying to assess the relative merits of using document styles for
starting new projects in Fin2012b as opposed to templates.

I used the Setup Wizard to create a new orchestral score (also a customized

painstakingly edited all the staff and group names and positions as I prefer
and saved the whole thing as a new document style. But if I try to create a
new score using this document style and the setup wizard, all the staff and
group editing is gone. Of course, if I create the new score directly from a
template, all the staff and group changes are there.

It seems to me that going the template route will save a lot more time, even
if I have to add or remove some instruments and redo the scaling. Am I

[Finale] Fin2012a comments and questions

2012-04-10 Thread Lee Actor
For years I've been using Fin2004a (Win) on a daily basis, and have
developed a comfortable and efficient set of procedures for working on
(mostly) large orchestral scores. Circumstances have led me to upgrade to
Fin2012a (+ GPO 4) on a Win7 machine, and after spending considerable time
going through the documentation and testing most of the new features, I'm
still wondering about a few details in my attempt to establish a new and
efficient working method. I'm hoping to glean a few nuggets from some of
the experienced voices on this list.

First, I must say that I'm impressed at the number of improvements and
refinements in Finale over the past 8 years. No more need for 2 of every
articulation, one for note side and one for stem side (and the tedious
editing of same when extracting parts). An entire level of complexity
(staff optimization) has been removed from score layout. Self-adjusting
rehearsal letters. Human Playback seems to work pretty well for the most
part, esp. with Garritan instruments. The virtualization of instruments
via ScoreManager looks to be a big plus.

Which brings me to linked parts. With the improvements made over the last
few years, the current implementation seems robust and well designed, but
still not flexible enough for my needs. The first problem is how to handle
multi-part staves (typical for winds in an orchestral score). The Edit
Voicing option in Manage Parts doesn't work for any but the most simple
parts. Adding cues that appear in the part and not the score would need a
massive kludge and is impractical. I also like a different scaling factor
for music spacing in parts than for the score, which looks impossible.

My thought for producing parts was to adapt my previous procedure: make a
copy of the final score just for parts, use TGTools for smart explosion of
multi-part staves, and then use linked parts instead of extracting them.
Howerver, I've found that TGTools Smart Explosion often gets hung up when
running on Fin2012a (it also occasionally hangs on Fin2004a in Win7, so it
may have something to do with the 64-bit OS). I suppose I could manually
create new staves, copy the multi-part staff to each, run TGTools Process
Extracted Parts on each new staff (the version that comes with Fin2012, not
the older full TGTools, which also hangs up), then manually clean up the
resulting parts (Smart Explosion has more smarts than Process Extracted
Parts). Since text blocks can't be placed on different pages in score and
(linked) parts, I suppose movement titles would have to be expressions,
which can't be automatically centered. There must be other issues I'm not
anticipating, and I guess it's possible I might end up extracting parts the
old-fashioned way. I'd love to hear other opinions about best practice
methods of handling parts in large ensemble scores.

I've always used external MIDI devices for playback, and gotten quite expert
at both using the Finale MIDI tool, and finding workarounds for its
limitations, but I'm going to go 21st century and use software samples (GPO)
and Human Playback, which I always had turned off previously. I sure would
like to know a little more about the details of HP; e.g., exactly how short
does a note have to be to trigger staccato samples for strings? And I may
be missing something, but I don't see a way to add terms to the HP
Dictionary (e.g., norm. instead of normale), though there is a kludge
using hidden expressions. Based on some experimentation, my current
thinking is that in order to get finer control over playback, HP needs some
help by incorporating manually added MIDI data. If reasonably realistic
playback is important to you, I'd like to hear what your approach is using
GPO and HP.

Finally, I know that engraver triplets have been around for a while, but I'm
having a hard time discerning what advantages they offer. Actually, I'm
really not sure what they are. And does anyone have an alternative to
TGTools Modify-Shift-Accidentals, which crashes on my system? The default
accidental placement in chords is quite unattractive to my eye, and I dread
the thought of having to manually shift all of them.

Thanks in advance for anyone spending the time to offer advice and/or info.

I do have the most recent TGTools, v2.61, unless there's been an update in
the past 2 years I don't know about. I find that using Smart Explosion,
even a short selection onto pre-existing staves, is very prone to crashing.
So do you handle parts from multi-part staves essentially manually?

Could you elaborate a little on using Page Titles? Are we talking about any
page that contains text? I don't find using the plug-in particularly
intuitive, so a hint or two would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Subject: Re: [Finale] Fin2012a comments and questions

1. I still keep a separate file for parts, but instead of a different file
per part, it is a single file for all parts. This has tremendous advantages
over different files, although it is admittedly not the Holy Grail. Other
people insist on the Holy Grail of a single file, but if they have exacting
engraving requirements it probably costs them more time than maintaining two
files, unless they do *lots* of revisions after completing the score.
You should go ahead and create the parts in your score file, before you've
copied it, because you can move around elements in the score while leaving
them in their default positions in the part (or vice versa) before you
actually make a copy for parts.

2. Make sure you have the latest TGTools. I don't have the same level of
problems crashing as you are reporting. However, I have admittedly never
used Smart Extraction as shoot and forget. I always select the passages I
want and I always create all the staves for all parts before ever beginning
the piece, whether they are used in the score or not. I would not let
TGTools create staves, esp. in Fin12.

3. A huge negative of the Score Manager is the inability to separate
transposition from instrument. I don't know if this is an issue for you,
though. Another is the inability to easily see and control exactly where
doubling instruments start and stop, esp. if it is an upgraded file.

4. I use Page Titles for movement titles, and duplicate them on different
pages (hiding or showing as needed) for different parts. You will find the
new version of my Page Title Copy plugin to be a *huge* help for this,
because it automatically does all the hiding and showing. You may find that
expressions work better for you, but with my plugin, page titles are pretty
easy.

5. I also find Engraver tuplets to be useless and confusing. My Tuplet Mover
plugin will not auto-position them, so I stick with 20th century tuplets
even now.

6. Someone else will have to comment about HP.

Thanks, the latest info on the TGTools website claims compatibility only up
to Finale 2010, which put a doubt in my mind. OTOH, the website hasn't been
updated in almost 2 years.

I am using TG Tools successfully with Finale 2012. You must
remember to make a copy of your TG Tools pkg file (in your
 plugins folder Library/Application Support/MakeMusic/Finale
2011/Plug-ins and move it to the same location in the Finale 2012
Application Support folder. I think you also need to remove the
text copy from you copy, but I'm not sure. Anyway, be
 reassured, it works.

RE: [Finale] OT: Violin pizz range

2011-05-14 Thread Lee Actor
Pizz on that B harmonic is nearly inaudible even to the violinist, so I
would definitely file that idea under impractical. You can write the
normal pizz on the high B, and assuming you have an entire violin section
playing forte, you will get something. It's hard to say how effective it
will be without knowing the context, but I can't personally imagine a
circumstance where asking for that pizz would be a superior solution
compared to a number of alternatives.

What about as a harmonic pizz? (That b is a natural harmonic of the e
 string.)

I'm curious to know if the collected wisdom of this list knows of
examples
in orchestral rep. of violin pizz. notes of b''' (5 leger line-b)

Obviously, the closer to standard rep., the more likely I am

I have googled references to Berlioz having written a'''. This

I didn't know that, but he and Strauss also wrote some piccolo
parts down to low C and flute parts down to low Bb. The key, I
think, is that he DID know who he was writing for, and knew that
it would be sung, just as he knew that some flutemaker in Vienna
was experimenting with extra-low flutes and piccolos and that his
 flute players could get them.

You write for what's available. It's that simple. Every time
Broadwood shipped a new piano with an extended range to
Beethoven, he started using the extra high and low notes
immediately. The difference with Stravinsky is that I'm not sure
he could have known in advance that the extremes he wrote COULD
be played. Josquin (or Pierre de la Rue) also wrote the bass
down to a low Bb at the end of , but again we don't know
what pitch standard he was writing for. I assume that Mahler was
writing for somewhere around 435 to 450, if not necessarily 440.

RE: [Finale] Violin fingerings

2011-02-25 Thread Lee Actor
Almost always above, regardless of stem direction, and above tuplet numbers
and brackets. The only case I can think of where a fingering would go below
is in a divisi orchestral part with 2 voices on one staff, stems up and
stems down.

But as both a violinist with a lot of experience, and as a composer who has
written a lot of string music (including a violin concerto), I would urge
you to resist adding fingerings under any but very exceptional
circumstances, such as a technical etude, or a tricky special fingering as
written by an expert string player. Otherwise a fingering is less likely to
help than to be an annoyance. And guaranteed to be ignored even more than
bowings.

 Hi all,

Do you know the exact placement of single note fingerings:
always placed above the notes or depending stems direction (like
 articulations)?

In case of up stems tuplet, is it allowed to place fingerings :
 - below the notes;
 - above the notes with tuplet number and bracket below?

 Thanks!
