Hi anita and welcome to the list.

A good list of mac games can be found over at
http://www.pcs-games.net/MacGame-co.htm

Unfortunately there isn't half as much as compared to Windows or Ios,
though also bare in mind there are a lot of games that can be played
in a web browser, go and see www.whitestick.co.uk for a good list,
also I believe there is a mud client for Mac that works with Vo,
though since I'm not a mac user myself I'm not sure.

You might also try asking on the forum over on www.audiogames.net and
checking the game's database, where there are descriptions and links
to download games.

hth.

All the best,

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] New member looking for where to go to play games

2015-10-16 Thread Thomas Ward
Hello Christina,

Off the top of my head you may want to try Audiogames.net which has a
huge database of games you can download and play including developer,
website, and other information. That would be the easiest way to find
out what you are looking for.
Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] new member with a question

2014-04-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dacia,

Welcome to the list.

As for Audyssey.org we are currently in the progress of rewriting and
updating the website which is why you are getting the page under
construction message. That said, there are plenty of other resources
you can go to get similar information.

To begin with try Audiogames.net. They have a huge database of text
based and audio based games for the blind and low vision which is
probably the best place to start looking for accessible games.

Another resource is PCsgames.net also has a list of various accessible
games which is also a good starting place if you are new to audio
gaming in general.

Another excellent resource is 7-128.com has an annual list of the top
25 websites for blind gamers. I suggest you check that out as it might
help you get on your way to playing some good accessible games.

As far as murder mysteries etc goes I suggest you try the In specter
Cindy games by 7128 Software. I don't know if all their games are
murder mysteries, but Death Nell is a murder mystery.

As far as Phase 10 goes I am not aware of any accessible computer
versions, but I haven't really kept up with accessible card games.

HTH

Re: [Audyssey] new member with a question

2014-04-20 Thread Michael Taboada

Welcome Dacia!
I believe Thomas is working on adding content to the audyssey site, but
I imagine alot of it is still under construction, as you are seeing.
That being said, a great place to get a list of games is at
audiogames.net. That has a list on the homepage that you can choose a
game and go to see its details. There is also a forum
(forum.audiogames.net) that will allow you to talk about the game on
there, assuming you don't want to talk on the audyssey list.
As for accessible murder mysteries, I believe 7-128 software has some. I
think their website is 7128.com.

Hth and again, welcome!

Hi, all.

I'm Shannon from New York. Some of you probably know me from other lists.

I enjoy games of all kinds, but my current passion is RPG's and strategy
games. I've played the Storm8 games for IOS devices, and have recently
discovered Uken Games, also for IOS. King of Dragon Pass is also quite
awesome, although I've only managed to win it once. (Smile)

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend any other IOS or Mac-based games that
I might enjoy.

Happy gaming, all.

Hi Paulette,

I just have Colossal Cave on an external hard drive along with all of the stuff
from an old dos computer that died. A friend took the hard drive and put it
all onto CDs for me and then I put it onto the external hard drive for easy
access.

Most of my games are not the quest or fighting type games. Mine are more card,
board and sports type games. But others are driving or flying and stuff like
that. Oh yeah and some adult sex type games as well.

I would like to, but have not ever written a simulation type game, like
building and then managing a house. Sounds like a fun game to create and play,
but I just have never created one like that. Maybe some day though.

Hi Paulette,

Yes Ma'am, I started learning and creating games in 1980. Then I got my first
talking computer in December of 1989, so have been creating blind accessible

As of now, I do not have an IPhone or Mac computer, so would not be able to

Hi Jim,

You give me hope. Do you play Colossal Cave on an old dos computer, or do
you have it on your Windows computer that has Windows.

I know that you are a man, so I hope you don't mind me saying this, but I
wish that there were more female oriented games out there. I don't know what
I mean exactly, but the same old fighting or quest theme gets old after a
while. How about a game where you could build your own house, doll house
complete with family, run a hospital, live in a fairy world, stir up an
instant boy or girl just like you make a mug of instant cocoa, things like
that. Just some thoughts.

Subject: [Audyssey] New member triple game trouble

 Hi all,

I am a new member to this list. My name is Paulette Vickery. I am totally
blind and new to playing computer games. I would like to let you know a
 bit
 about me.

First if anyone wants to contact me off list my email address is:
 paule...@evickery.com
I am 59 years of age, married to a sighted husband, have 6 grown children
and 12 grand children. I am a psychotherapist with an LCSW in private
practice with a small clientele. Besides gaming I enjoy knitting,
crocheting, cooking, listening to music and reading.

Now, about my triple game trouble. I have downloaded 3 games to my
 iPhone.

 I
also have a computer, use Windows XP Professional and Window Eyes.

The game that is giving me the most trouble is, Blindshoot. I downloaded
 it
from the App Store yesterday. When I opened the game it said, game
 salad.
I have no idea what that means. Then it told me that in order to play the
game I should turn my iPhone to landscape mode. I did that. Nothing
happened. I had a silent screen no matter what I did. This morning I
 learned
from Apple Vis, that I needed to turn Voice Over off in order to play the
game. I did this and still nothing happened; I continued to have a silent
screen. What should I do? I would really like to play this game.

My second troubling problem is with the game, A I Adventure. It is the
old, Colossal Cave, text adventure game, now for the iPhone. Many times
when I speak my commands I get no response from the game. Every now and
then, it will respond to my commands. I have learned to give them in a
declarative manner, like I have a period at the end of each command.
 Again,
what should I do? Any suggestions will be welcome.

My third troublesome game is, Things that go bump in the night, which I
 also
have on my iPhone. I understand how to play this text based adventure
 game,
but it is really confusing. I can't seem to get anywhere and often, text
that I no longer need is still on the screen. Does anyone have any tips?

I would like to be successful at playing at least 1 computer game. I am
feeling quite frustrated. Thanks very much in advance for your
 assistance.

 Paulette

I have downloaded 3 games to my iPhone.
 I
also have a computer, use Windows XP Professional and Window Eyes.

Thanks very much in advance for your assistance.

 Paulette

Re: [Audyssey] New member triple game trouble

2012-04-21 Thread dark

Ah, excuse my last confused message, that makes a little more sense :D.
However to make this message have some sort of point, here are some good
sites to find out about audiogames.

First off, www.audiogames.net. this has a database of gamef audio and other
accessible games, most for pc though some for Ios, each with a (hopefully),
informative description and information about the game. you can also search
the database by genre and license, by using the search archive link on the
main site, which is handy if your looking for a specific type of game.

Another great resource is the pcs games fantastic games and where to find
them list over at www.pcsgames.net. This is a massive list of websites
providing accessible games, and a great resource as well.

Hth.

All the best,

Dark.

Hi Paulette - Welcome. In your intro you mentioned that you have a PC as
well as an iPhone. If you want to learn more about where to go for game
information for the PC, go to www.7128.com We have a list of the top
websites for gamers who are blind. This list is updated every year and you
can link directly to all these great sites from our list.

We also produce games that are accessible. We rate all our games as to
their accessibility and any that are rated as blind accessible are
self-voiced using SAPI. There are a number of word, story and puzzle games
that are blind accessible.

We are looking at porting some of our games to the iPhone, and iPad as
well as developing some new ones specifically for that venue. But
that will take a while.

Anyhow, welcome to the list - there are lots of interesting folk here.

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] new member

2008-09-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

Quote
I don't think there would be any licensing involved-
since the game is basically obsolete- and the company isn't making money off
of it, or am I wrong here? That's my main point- if I made a game similar to
this, would I be conflicting with licensing or some such?
End quote

Yes, you could be conflicting with the original authors if your game was
exactly like the original product. The fact it is obsolete and the
company isn't making or selling it any more does not make it public
domain material. it is still guarded under U.S. copyright law.
The thing to keep in mind that a copyright can be held for a person's or
company's entire lifetime, and may be renewed by any surviving
relatives. What that means for people like you and I we will not live
long enough to see the copyrights run out on something we enjoy, and
there is usually between 100 to 150 years before a copyright falls into
the public domain.
That is what happened with me and Montezuma's Revenge. The product is 24
years old, it isn't being sold, and who really cares? Well, legally I am
in the wrong, because according to U.S. copyright law they might not
release the copyright into the public domain until 2084. That is another
76 years away, and I will be too old to care by then.

Hi,
Well, there is Jedi Quake maintained by Cara Quinn. It is basically
quake with a Star Wars type theme to it.
As for any outright Star Wars games for the blind there aren't any. I
was working on one called Jedi Strike, but when I attempted to license
the Star Wars copyrights via Lucas Licensing they flatly refused.
Besides being very expensive Lucas Licensing only deals with one company
at a time. For example, since Lucas Arts holds the exclusive copyright
for Star Wars vidio games my company USA Games can't license the
copyright, because Lucas Licensing says it would be a conflict of
interest. I would be competing with their games, and never mind the fact
my games for the blind wouldn't even scratch their markets. Besides
witch the couple thousand I would earn off of making said Star wars
games wouldn't even pay for the royalties they wanted to legally license
the Star Wars copyrights.
Bottom line, what I learned is clearly Lucas Licensing has nothing in
place for small time developers wanting to create a game using a Star
Wars theme. It is clear all of their dealings are with companies with
millions of dollars to spend, and thus will pay millions to Lucas in
royalties. A guy expecting to make a few thousand isn't even worth their
time of day unless I use their copyrights illegally, and then they can
sue me for copyright infringement. It is a lose lose situation, and
Lucas Licensing is a bunch of jerks if you ask me.
I have thought about releasing the game as freeware under the creative
commons license, but even that is no absolute protection. That may give
them less of a reasont to sue, but they still can come after me with a
cease and desist order that the courts would uphold stating I have to
remove the content and destroy all source code, all known copies, etc.
I'm not sure it is worth the trouble for a blind developer to risk that
or not.

Re: [Audyssey] new member

2008-09-08 Thread Bryan Peterson
Precisely. THere was a huge debate about that on list a while back. I myself
an of two minds on the issue. On the one hand I feel that if some small time
dev created an accessible Star Wars game and Lucas Arts had a problem with
it, it's their own fault for not merely forgetting to take us blind folks
into account and consider the fact that we too might enjoy being able to
play their games, but also basically snubbing us, which is what they did to
Thomas. At the same time no blind person is likely to have the kind of money
they would ask for in order to pay for their licensing fees and royalties,
and the legal issues are enough to make me cringe just thinking about it.
It's sad really, since George Lucas himself seems like a pretty nice guy
from the interviews I've heard. But of course it still comes down to those
little rectangular green pieces of paper that most of us don't have too many
of.

Re: [Audyssey] new member

2008-09-08 Thread constantine (on laptop)
You know, that really is quite sad. I bet a starwars audio game would be
quite fun- and I personally thought, when monty beta came out, that the
games were of great quality, that you'd be just the right guy to make them.

Its too bad, though, that there aren't any racing games. If I could, I'd
make an audiogame similar to wave race 64. Why? Because for me at least, it
had great audio, that can stil compete today- great music, great effects,
etc. It also had a good commintator- games like that should be more widely
recognized, I think. I don't think there would be any licensing involved-
since the game is basically obsolete- and the company isn't making money off
of it, or am I wrong here? That's my main point- if I made a game similar to
this, would I be conflicting with licensing or some such?

 Hi,
Well, there is Jedi Quake maintained by Cara Quinn.

2008-09-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Bryan,
Unfortunately, the courts probibly wouldn't see it the same way. More
often as not they would side with Lucas Arts on the copyright issues
unless I had a good lawyer to prove that their treatment violates the
fair use provisions of the copyright law in some way.
About George Lucas himself I think he is probibly an ok guy. It is even
possible he would be willing to see my ideas for an audio Star Wars game
as being ok. However, people like that hire middle men, like the lawyers
for Lucas licensing, to handle issues like this and they often draft
company polacy for stuff like this unless the big man says different.
Problem is common guys like you and I would have difficulty getting in
contact with someone like George Lucas as there are a million middle men
between us and him to ask a question that would normally get handled
down in the licensing department anyway.

Bryan Peterson wrote:
But of course it still comes down to those
little rectangular green pieces of paper that most of us don't have too many
 of.

 Hi Michael,
The best racing game I know of is Rail Racer from Blind Adrenaline. It
has several tracks, you earn award money for winning the race, it offers
racer upgrades, and there are several different levels of difficulty.
You can play one on one with the computer or play in online matches. You
 can find it at
 http://www.blindadrenaline.com
There is also Top Speed from Playing in the Dark which offers a more
Formula 1 type racing feel. It also has one on one with the computer, or
you can play against others online. You can get Top Speed from
 http://www.playinginthedark.net
Last but not least Jim Kitchen has produced a racing game similar to
Pole Position called Mach1. It doesn't offer online play, but it is
still a nice little free racing game. You can find it at
 http://www.kitchensinc.net
Before I go I would also like to let you know my company, USA Games, is
currently working on USA Raceway. You can find out about the status of
 this project at
 http://www.usagames.us/products.php

 Hi Michael,
If you are into war games and real time strategy type stuff I can think
of three or four games that might be up your alley. The first is a
couple of good games by GMA Games. GMA produces a real time submarine
simulation named Lonewolf. They also produce a real time tank simulation
named GMA Tank Commander. Both can be purchased from GMA at:
 http://www.gmagames.com
or if you are short on cash you can try the demo versions at least.
Another war game I personally like is SoundRTS. It is a real time
strategy game something like Warcraft. You start out with a handful of
peasants and the goal of the game is to create an army of knights,
footmen, mages, etc. You can build structures like castles, keeps,
workshops, etc. SoundRTS offers a one on one mode against the computer,
or you can join a battle online and play real time against friends. To
 download the beta visit:
 http://jlpo.free.fr/soundrts/
 Cheers.

Hi Chris,

As I am not running Vista, the below is what I have been told one must do to
run my games in Vista. but I guess if you do, they will run just fine.

The first thing that you need to do is to run the setup.exe file in the
winkit.zip file as it installs files that the rest of the games need. So open
the winkit.zip file, press S and then enter. The winkit.zip file is the first
link on my free windows text to speech games page.

The rest of my games require full administration rights to
install. To do this arrow to the games installation file, press the
Windows context menu key, arrow to run as administrator, and press
enter. This will allow you to install the game as administrator. Or you can
just turn off the whole User Account Control thing in Vista and it will do the
same thing.

I hope that helps.

2008-09-07 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Chris,
All of Jim's games will work with Vista, but there are a few things you
need to do in order to get them to work properly.
First, you must install the winkit setup file as it includes all of the
Visual Basic 6 dependancies Vista does not include by default as well as
Jim Kitchen's custom game launcher.
Second, if you have user account control enabled you will have to
install the games with full administrator rights. You do that by
arrowing to the games setup file, pressing the Windows context key,
arrow to run as administrator, and press enter to launch the install.
Now, here are some recommendations based on my own experience with Jim's
games under Vista. If you plan to run the games with user account
control enabled I suggest you install winkit and the games to your local
directory such as
c:\Users\Chris\Games\Kitchensinc.
The reason is if you install the Jim's games to the default
c:\Program Files\Kitchensinc
directory and user account control is on it will cause problems with
saving files, writing out baseball stats, etc.
The alternative is to disable user account control and then you don't
have to worry about any conflicts with standard verses admin rights.

HI Chris,
I'm not sure. Is Blankblock a Visual Basic 6 program?
If so then the Winkit setup may fix those runtime errors with it. The
reason so many people are having issues with many of the older
accessible games is many of the VI developers are still using VB 6 as
their development language, and it so happens starting with the release
of Windows Vista Microsoft is beginning to faze Visual Basic 6 support
out of the os. That is why specific libraries needed for some games like
DX8VB.dll and DX7VB.dll are missing when you install Vista, and you have
to use a third-party installation like Winkit to get a complete set of
VB 6 runtime libraries on Windows Vista.

Not quite sure what you mean by war games, but have you tried GMA Tank
 Commander from

 www.gmagames.com

It's a World War tank simulation. You make your way through 6 missions
pitting your skill and wits against numerous enemy tanks and other
 weaponry.
 And, welcome to the list.

Also, command a World War 2 submarine through many missions from the same
web site as you play Lone Wolf. You can even create, and share, missions
you create. Even if these are not the sort of war games you're looking
 for,
 they're loads of fun. HTH

 Hi,

There are a few here, one being malk 1 by jim kitchen at:
 http://www.kitchensinc.com

 The other is top speed:
 http://www.playinginthedark.com

Top speed 2.1 is coming soon, by the way.

And both of these games are free.

Heres a bit of a description of each:

Malk 1 involves choosing a track and trying to race against a few other
cars, seeing if you can get the best laps. TOp speed is where you can
 choose
the mode (quick race, single, time trial, street adventure- if your
 daring,
there a bit harder tracks in there- and of course, online, where Kitchens
inc top speed shines; you can play against your friends with top speed. In
top speed 2.0, you can also build your own cars.

 Hope that helps some

 Hi Michael,
If you are into war games and real time strategy type stuff I can think
of three or four games that might be up your alley. The first is a
couple of good games by GMA Games. GMA produces a real time submarine
simulation named Lonewolf. They also produce a real time tank simulation
named GMA Tank Commander. Both can be purchased from GMA at:
 http://www.gmagames.com
or if you are short on cash you can try the demo versions at least.
Another war game I personally like is SoundRTS. It is a real time
strategy game something like Warcraft. You start out with a handful of
peasants and the goal of the game is to create an army of knights,
footmen, mages, etc. You can build structures like castles, keeps,
workshops, etc. SoundRTS offers a one on one mode against the computer,
or you can join a battle online and play real time against friends. To
 download the beta visit:
 http://jlpo.free.fr/soundrts/
 Cheers.

Try GMA tank commander or loan wolf. Both of these can be purchased, they're
about 20 bucks; http://www.gmagames.net, I think. Loan wolf is a submarine
type game where your fighting against other submarines using torpeedos and
what not, and GMA tank commander is where you can fight other tanks- in
realtime, of course- and there is also a free game called Sound RTS, similar
to WoW, I think, though I haven't tried it myself; I think the URL is
soundrts.net. I do believe, too, that this here sound RTS uses the same
voice as NVDA does- and I have to say, its not a bad voice.

But, then again, could be just me.

Hi Michael,
The best racing game I know of is Rail Racer from Blind Adrenaline. It
has several tracks, you earn award money for winning the race, it offers
racer upgrades, and there are several different levels of difficulty.

 Cheers.

 Hello listers,
My name is Michael. I was wondering if there are any accessible war
games that you can play against the computer? Or any online games that
 are easy to play Thanks
 Michael.

ok Tom, I will do my best to be on my best behavior, although it gets hard
at times. I just knew that I was kidded by Raul when I joined, or at least I
think I was, and sort of wanted to jab back at him. Just harmless fun, I
didn't mean anything bad about it. Jessie, ole Bean was just kiddin' around
with ya, Raul is a pretty good guy, from what I know bout him. Anyways talks
