You might try creating a new white layer and placing it at the bottom
of the layerstack to show the regions where your image is transparent.
At last I am beginning to understand. The white shows where before there
was the grey and white squares layer. Brilliant thank you.

gimp 2.4.3. But one can get the gutenprint gimp plugin which does the
job quite well. I bet that is available for ubuntu also.

I noticed this in 2.4.3 and now 2.4.4, when you zoom in/out using the
ctrl mousewheel or keypad +/-,
the 150% view causes the whole image to become transparent.
I checked the drop down menus, the 150% view does not exist in either.
Using 2.4.2 on Ubuntu, this does not happen

What is the best way of installing a script, please? I tried by
downloading the script to my desktop and dragging it into
~/.gimp2.4/scripts. I then ran, in GIMP, Xtns Script-Fu Refresh

Could it be that your camera sharpened the JPEG quite aggressively and you
did
not sharpen the result of the RAW conversion?
That could very well be the reason. I had forgotten that there is
sharpening going in the camera with JPEG which, of course, does not
happen with RAW.

Convert the image to RGB mode if it's not already. Select the white
region by color. In the Layer - Transparency menu, add an alpha
channel. In the same menu, set Color to alpha. This should make the
white background to transparent.
