Does Gimp have any thing like the colour management system that Photoshop
has , which I believe can be used to set the system to a standard setting
to ensure that periferals such as monitors,cameras., printers etc are all
operating on the same colour values.

I found two answers to my watermarking problem --
(a) Gimp-Tools-Text ---which I can use to put a name etc on the picture.
and
(b) I downloaded the Gimp watermark.scm plugin which also does the job.

I have some 1 bit tiff images.

When I open them in GIMP to edit GIMP saves them as 8 bit.

understanding is that going to Gray scale by itself, you lose 16bit to 8bit.
So, Decompose would be better?

Well, trying to get use to doing layers, again...
is it possible to take a RGB color image,
and select a Layer: New Adjustment Layer ( name it Channel Mixer )?
Then Select that Layer Channel Mixer, and work with it,
to adjust R/G/B and to select monchrome, with output channel Gray?

as the default print command in gimp.
(my printer is a lexmark Z53 which I have listed 3 times, a, b, c, for 3
different resolutions in cups)
