Hi Paula,

When I work on images the image I import is usually the base layer and is at
the *bottom* of a stack. Anything I add is almost always on top. Whatever
works for you.

I followed your suggestions and I clicked on the text editor in the Tool
Options box to see my input and it was there. Then I went to the Layers
dialog, selected Stack, and reversed the order of the layers so Layer 1 was
at the top. I saw the text I entered was in the layer with the large T in
it but it was near the bottom of the stack. I selected that layer, moved
it to the top, where it should have been, and the text appeared as it
should be.

Can you try with some other fonts? Also make sure the font size in Tool
Options is reasonable (set it to pixels if needed), and the line height

Which operating system? E.g. Windows 10? Mac? A Is it a font that came

If you change the image to Mode->RGB does it then work?

Current GIMP version doesn't run on Vista any more – the last one to run on

That is tool options - you can show it by going to the Window menu
(Janelas i think for you) and under that the first option is Dockable
Dialogs, and in that submenu the first item it Tool Options.

The main Toolbox you have visible on the left, with the icons for the
different tools.

When asking for help, it's necessary to explain
1. what you did exactly
2. what you expected to happen
3. what actually happened
4. why this is a problem
5. the operating system and software version

You've done some of that but not all. I don't know exactly what is
going wrong for you. But maybe all you need is to find Tool Options.
This is the single most important dialog box in all of GIMP.

The tools are now grouped in the toolbox; right-click or hover over
them.

You can turn off this behaviour and ungroup them in Edit->Preferences

What operating system and version are you using?
What version of GIMP are you using

Do the tools not work when you click on them? Or is it that the Main Toolbox

As far as the video, you could stave it to a cloud storage site (Box, Dropbox,
Google (something-or-other)) and post the link to the video in your message.

Your script registers (shows up in menus, listed in pluginrc), so you
have it basically right.

When you run it you get his message (may require to use Gimp-console if
you are on Windows):

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/app/lib/gimp/2.0/python/gimpfu.py", line 857, in _run
    res = apply(func, params[1:])
TypeError: crop_all_layers() takes exactly 1 argument (2 given)

This is because your function takes one single argument ("image"), and
since your plugin is using old-style registration, an image and a layer
are always implied as the first two arguments, so you need at least two
arguments in your function (and you can ignore the second).

A better approach is to use new-style registration. In this registration
model, the menu entry is split in two: the menu label as before, but
without any path, and a named "menu" argument with the path:

Old style:

register(
    "crop-all-layers","","","Alex","Alex","2020",
    "/Filters/Artistic/_croplayers...",
    "RGB*, GRAY*",
    [],
    [],
    crop_all_layers,
)

New style:

register(
    "crop-all-layers","","","Alex","Alex","2020",
    "_croplayers...",
    "RGB*, GRAY*",
    [],
    [],
    crop_all_layers,
    menu="/Filters/Artistic/"
)

However with the new style registration, there are no implicit
arguments, so you have to declare your image argument:

register(
    "crop-all-layers","","","Alex","Alex","2020",
    "_croplayers...",
    "RGB*, GRAY*",
    [(PF_IMAGE, "image", "Input image", None)],
    [],
    crop_all_layers,
    menu="/Filters/Artistic/"
)

And then of course use a function that takes a single argument, the image.

Some hints to debug your scripts, especially if you are on Windows:

https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-Debugging-python-fu-scripts-in-Windows

PS: Couldn't see anything useful in your video, it is too fuzzy to see
the labels. Best make static screenshots, and copy/paste any error
messages as text.

There is a known bug in 2.10.14 that makes Gimp  reset the print

YOu can reset the print definition using Image>Print size and these
values should be correctly exported. If that bothers you too much you
can get back to 2.10.12 until 2.10.16 is published.

Yep. Once you've transformed from CMYK to RGB you've irretrievably
lost that extra information.

Actually, after reading th code, what is going on with the colour
selector is that it converts to rgb and back again, and the conversion
is uses is a valid one - you get the same resulting theoretical colour,
if you ignore the way inks mix on paper. In fact changing the amount of
black is often visible, but effectively GIMP (actually BABL) is
subtracting the black from the other colours, which saves ink.

34,37,56,00 is the same colour as
 0, 4,33,34
and you can see this by experimentation.

When GIMP has native CMYK image support, it will need to make
undercolour removal optional, but for now, since the RGB values are the
same and that's all that's stored in the image data, you're stuck with
it.

This is really about the colour picker, and which one you are using,
not about CMYK. It's doing this for me too, although i'm not sure why.

But to work with CMYK you might want to consider using separate+, or
working with Krita, which supports CMYK images directly (and i imagine
can export as a CMYK tiff although i don't know for sure).

> I MUST use cmyk as i'm modeling for an inkjet colored 3d

You are editing an RGB image in GIMP, not a CMYK one. it doesn't matter
which colour picker you use, you'll get an RGB colour.

Converting colours from RGB to CMYK for print can be done in multiple
ways (e.g. with undercolour removal to save ink).

I agree the colour selector is misbehaving, though.

Re: [Gimp-user] Help re-coloring text on a jpg

2019-06-27 Thread Rick Kline
Jpg, so I’m assuming it’s a flat file (no layers). If the text is a text layer,
simply choose the Text tool, click in the text, select all, click on the text
color chip in the dialog box and drag in the color area to select black, or
enter 00 for the color number. Click OK, and your text should be black.

If it’s not a layered image, you can use the Select By Color tool.
Adjust Threshold to select all of the red when you click on it. 180 worked for
my test. Once selected, choose black as foreground color, dump black with paint
bucket on selected text and you should have black text.

Hope this helps.

A layer group is a container, a box to put layers in.

If you make a new layer group, you should then click on the name of the
layer you want to draw on, in the layers dialogue. You can't draw on
the layer group itself.

If you are just trying to add a new layer, the leftmost button at the
bottom of the layers dialogue (in English; right-most in Hebrew or
Arabic) will make a new layer, and the button next to it makes a new
layer-group container.

Hops this helps.

1. It's not complete. For instance, there is no documentation on all the
new blending modes yet. Just a few days ago I had to point someone to
commit logs adding Merge and Split blending modes to the code, where some
information on their use was provided. The reason for this is because
roughly 90% of all work on documentation is done by a single person for
whom English isn't even the native language.

2. Mentioning 16 other languages is kinda unfair -- not all translations
are being currently maintained. I've only seen translations into 4
languages updated over the last month.

This is a community effort. The community gets exactly as much as it
contributes. We are all in the same boat: you, me, everyone. We can carry
on pointing fingers or get cracking instead :)

Re: [Gimp-user] Help with Selection Tools Issue

2018-03-13 Thread Michal Vašut
Main reason why it did not work for jpg is that it doesn't have its own
alpha channel, therefore when you deleted selection, Gimp filled it with
background color (black by default).
As somebody above mentioned, you need to add alpha channel to layer with
image. Then after removing selection, it will be transparent.
Even better way is to add layer mask. (that will cause non destructive
transparency that can be tweaked)

Re: [Gimp-user] Help

2018-01-01 Thread Guy Stalnaker
JLopez,

That's a fairly open-ended request as "damage" can cover a great variety of
things. May I recommend several things you can look at to get a sense for
the variety of approaches one can take for "damage" in digital images:

A technique for dealing with physical damage, e.g., scratches, etc., is the
wavelet-decompose tool. The idea behind it is that damage may be limited to
certain ranges of an image's detail. Wavelet-decompose breaks an image into
a specified set detail levels allowing you to work on them in isolation.
Pat David's tutorials show how this is done. It is the *primary* took I
used in my own work in "fixing" old family photographs many of which are
covered in fine cracks/scratches. It is time-intensive but can yield
remarkable results, sometimes magical results!

https://patdavid.net/2014/07/wavelet-decompose-again.html

A more general book, not as in-depth as one might wish but which covers a
more broad set of "damage" including color issues, is this book which is
also GIMP specific (unlike most other books that are Photoshop specific).

https://www.barnesandnoble.com/p/beginning-photo-retouching-and-restoration-using-gimp-phillip-whitt/1120375741/2677353755024?st=PLA&sid=BNB_DRS_New+Marketplace+Shopping+Books_&2sid=Google_&sourceId=PLGoP164949&gclid=Cj0KCQiA1afSBRD2ARIsAEvBsNlM8cipvQKf7U99OvLua-GcR8Z-JbzO5GC4VDPyGUA7ES6GB682M24aAvh0EALw_wcB

The Bible of these types of guides is Ctein's "Digital Restoration ..." --
it is, unfortunately, a Photoshop book and thus it's not possible to map
the techniques used to GIMP use. Also, the author makes a fair number of
assumptions about Photoshop knowledge, so that it is not always clear what
he's doing. But the range of techniques he uses will give you a good
understanding of the may ways one can approach fixing "damage"

Hope this helps some -- really, really recommend Pat David's blog. He as
many well written, informative guides for all sorts of things which you
might adapt for your particular needs.

Follows are links to a variety of sources I've saved over the years into
Evernote. You may find useful things here for the types of damage your

So, that's a lot of stuff, but there is no single technique that will fix
all damage. You'll likely find you need to do different things for
different reasons -- I know that's ambiguous, but it's also unfortunately
almost as surely true for your image as it was for all of my images.

Working blind here, but a few suggestions are possible.

Try the Unsharp Mask filter in the Filters > Enhance menu. It's easy to
overdo, but if you play with the settings you might get something
acceptable.

You might also want to try some of the filters in the G'MIC package,
such as those under Filters > G'MIC > Details > Sharpen.

As always, Control+z is your friend: Back up and try again until you
see something you like.

Just for fun, you might consider playing around with makeup or grease
paint and using a "real" photo of yourself that automated facial
recognition won't be likely to even recognize as a face.

from their printers which *they* control, not you. an image does not
present dots per inch and you cannot give them something not existing. if
you/they are actually referring to pixels, ppi, use the correct term and
use it to describe the crop area of the image. that capability *is*
provided by gimp and will lead you to less confusion.

also when describing a problem, using the wrong terms leads to incorrect
assumptions for those attempting to provide you a solution.

then perhaps you should describe using correct terms so understanding is
more definitive. even adobe now uses the correct terms when describing
cropping on their web-site.

and then users incorrectly describing their problems would have a better
understanding and start providing better descriptions leading to better
and/or more precise solutions.

DPI is the term used by professional graphic designers when speccing for

Earlier messages referenced a Canon digital camera, IIRC. I also saw a
reference to the images showing up as very small when the pictures were
loaded in to GIMP. That tells me that the camera images you are trying to
load are in RAW format but you don't have a plug-in in GIMP that will let it
read files in that format.

What you are seeing are the thumbnails of the RAW files. You need to install
a plug-in for GIMP to let it read RAW files. You can install either dcraw or
ufraw plug-in to let GIMP read the files. If you can't find either of those
plug-ins you will need to convert the files in to a format that GIMP can
read before you try loading them in GIMP.

You CAN work in inches and your title bar can be changed to show the
original size in inches.

No need to work in pixels.
See attached jpgs.
Of course, small photos have to be scaled up to get larger sizes. GIMP
scales up quite nicely.

8"x10" at 200 ppi is 1600 x 2000 pixels.

If you can crop the image to this size and get what you want, you do
not
need additional steps.

If you do - i.e. if a 1600x2000 crop does not match up with what you
want to crop out of the original image - then a scale will become
necessary.

Can you provide a sample image and mark the area you want to retain
after the crop?
There is an unit drop-down list in the image window status bar - check
the View menu. This can also be set in GIMP's preferences.
Maybe to adjust the image resolution.

Hello Micheal. I'll look into GIMP later today, when I get to the studio.
So
from what I've read, I have to convert what I want the end result to be,
i.e.

size crop and dpi to pixels, and use that number to achieve the desired size
crop?

I can provide a sample image but of course they would all vary on the end
target

with regard to a crop. My editing for my images are relatively minimal in
nature.

I crop 8x10
Tweak contrast if desired
I use the gradient tool [foreground to transparent] in all 4 corners
usually

I sharpen them
Save to .jpg for my lab to print proofs.

Done.

I guess I can make up a cheat sheet and stick it on the wall for all my
usual

crops for orders to determine pixel count.

16x20's
11x14's
8x10's
5x7's
4x5's
etc...

amazing you want to use a tool but are not really interested in learning

Re: [Gimp-user] HELP: Installation Issues with Gimp 2.8.20

2017-03-17 Thread Rick Kline
Hey Nate,

Did you get this sorted out yet?

Do you recall the steps you took to install your previous version of GIMP? Was
it on the same system? Did you uninstall previous version of GIMP before
attempting to install the latest version?

Under the Win 7 system, you will probably have access limitations to the system
drive C:, even with an account that has Admin privileges.

I’m assuming you download an install executable. If that’s the case - download
installer then run locally - try right-clicking on the installer and choose
“Run as Administrator”. You’ll have to do it from an account that has Admin
privileges, and provide the Admin password when prompted.

You may even want to try installing in a different directory, if the install
continues to fail. Not the neatest method, but may get you up and running.

Please keep us up to date on how the install is going.

Rick

Re: [Gimp-user] HELP Cannot open raw pictures in Gimp

2017-01-02 Thread Partha Bagchi
What ofnuts said. :)

I'd also recommend using a RAW editor from Nikon for your specific camera.
CNXD (Capture-NXD) is free and should get the most out of your camera's RAW
data. Once you are done and wish to do further pixel level editing, User
File -> Open With and register GIMP as your pixel editor. Then the image
will open in GIMP.

You can also download one of my builds (portable or otherwise). The 2.9
series comes with PhotoFlow as the default RAW editor.

Hope this helps.

Native Gimp dosn't open RAW files. You need a plugin. UFRaw used to be
the only one, but it is getting a bit obsolete. There is a new one
called Photoflow:

https://discuss.pixls.us/t/how-to-use-the-latest-version-of-the-photoflow-gimp-plug-in/1460

But IMHO, the purpose of RAW is to spend time getting the most of the
sensor data, and this takes some time and usually results in several
version. So if you work on RAW, you can use the RAW apps directly on the
file, save the results a good quality JPEG/TIFF files, and then open
that in Gimp for the final touch-ups. There are many FOSS RAW applications.

About the same here (Mageia Linux, GIMP git master/2.9), 5 or 6 seconds
to start GIMP. It'd be faster if i had fewer than 8,500 fonts installed
probably. It just took 45 seconds to load a 1.6GByte PNG file, although
I was unable to load a 4.1G xcf file (GIMP said the file was corrupt).

But (1) I'm on Linux and (2) GIMP 2.8 starts in 3 seconds, and (3) I
have 32G of RAM.

This is normal the first time launching GIMP with OS 10.11.6. After that it
should be much faster unless you are loading a very large file. I just launched
GIMP—5 seconds. Loading one of my 16MB files takes 30 seconds. May take a bit
longer on a 2008 MacBook Pro, mine is mid 2010.

Make sure your UI language is set to UK English, otherwise GIMP will look

What I typically do is, using the Ellipse Selection Tool, I make a selection of
whatever size I need the circle to be and fill it with a color. From there, I
make a smaller selection within the first circle and clear it (Delete key or
Edit > Clear). Also, make sure that anti aliasing is checked while doing this.

Btw, what method are you using to make the circle? Are you making a path and
then stroking? If so, make sure you're using the paint brush tool and not the
pencil. That may help as well.

There are many free tutorials that will show you how to use GIMP to make
graphic buttons. Try searching 'gimp buttons' or something.

The simplest method would be to use the Text Circle Script-Fu script. It
might not be in your version of GIMP if you are using a more recent version
of the program.

Re: [Gimp-user] HELP putting words in 3d curved around a globe

2016-09-07 Thread Ofnuts
The whole layer width is mapped to the full equator. If you want the
text to remain in the visible hemisphere, just add margins left and
right to its layer.

Also, AFAIK, the aspect ratio of the layer determines the aspect ratio
of the sphere, so if you want a sphere you have to apply the filter to a
1:1 layer. But... the height of the layer is mapped on a half meridian
while the width is mapped on a full equator, the end result being that a
square at the equator is stretched to a 2:1 rectangle. So you have to:

1) start with a 2:1 picture
2) Put your text on the center square
3) Scale down horizontally only to 50% to obtain a 1:1 image
3) Apply map to sphere

around the sphere, i.e. stretching it around the back of the discoball and
making it unreadable.
My logo attached below, just an example of it (colour to change prob to blue

I'm thinking something like the universal pictures logo.

Not that I can find.

As for only loading when you use the tool, that will slow you down tremendously.

A possible work around is to save the fonts you use frequently as presets in
the Text tool.

This is because your original background layer is a photo that doesn't
have an alpha channel. Just add an alpha channel to your photo layer.

Re: [Gimp-user] Help with color of several shades

2016-04-25 Thread Pat David
You can also dup the base layer, and decompose to B&W using channel mixer.
I would put the green contribution to 1.00 and remove red and blue until
you get a good mask that isolates the "mortar" (you can use "preserve
luminosity"). That is, the 'mortar' is all white, while most of the bricks
are all black.

Then duplicate the base layer again, add a layer mask, and copy/paste the
B&W layer as the mask. This isolates the mortar. You can use "colorize"
to adjust the hue/sat/lightness of the mortar then.

It sounds complicated. It's not, but you'll need to be comfortable with
these operations to use it. So I did it already:

http://filebin.net/6zog3m5uqo

Just use "Colors -> Colorize" on the top layer to get the colors you want.

This was a week ago so it may be moot by now, but since I didn't see
any other replies: one thing you can try is different settings of
Select by: in the Tool options for Select by Color. You could try
either Hue (since the mortar is greener than everything else),
Saturation (since the brick color isn't saturated but the mortar is)
or Green. Don't forget that Select by Color lets you drag to adjust
how much is selected: up/left to select less, down/right to select
more. It looks to me like with that image, Green isn't working at
all but Hue and Saturation both work a lot better than the default
of Composite.

You'll still need to clean up your selection after making it,
either by copying it to a layer mask or by editing it in the
quickmask. Use Levels to threshold it (Threshold handles only black
and white so you get hard edges; adjusting the middle slider in
Levels usually gives a better result, with gradual edges). You
might also want to use Dilate, Erode and Blur, and maybe paint
over a few areas that didn't work out quite right.

Good luck!

Re: [Gimp-user] Help With OSX El Capitan

2015-10-11 Thread Jon Tait
This is probably just GIMP taking a long time to load fonts, which does
happen after up-grading the OS.
It hasn't actually crashed, even though the window greys-out and OSX might
complain that GIMP is not responding, the font loading is still going on
and you just need to be patient.
Another user has recently been through the same thing with OSX 10.11 as
reported here:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756092
The real problem is the ridiculous number and size of fonts which are being
included with Windoze and OSX nowadays.

The usual advice given on the forums now is just to start Gimp running and
then leave it alone - don't even touch the keyboard or the mouse, just get
up, walk away and go do something else for at least an hour. (Yes, really!)
When you come back, Gimp will probably be up and running and you will then
have no further problems.

Having said that, we don't actually know how long it does take on OSX
10.11. So, if you have the patience, perhaps you could actually keep an eye
on your computer while GIMP is loading the first time (read the newspaper
or something) and hopefully tell us approximately how long it does take
..is it 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes, longer ?

That sounds like the typical problem of opening a RAW file from a digital

I think you need either the dcraw or ufraw plug-in for GIMP in order for it

root is not the correct owner for files in your gimp profile ~/.gimp-2.8/
plugins.
phil should be in there as owner.

I think plug-ins should go in your Gimp profile. However if installed
from a package, they will end up in /user... Not a good idea to have
in both locations, AFAIK your Gimp profile takes precedence and that
has incorrect permissions.

One way for Ubuntu (is this the worst user distro in the world?)

Get rid of all the previous stuff.

open a terminal to get a root prompt: sudo -i (then password)
apt-getupdate
apt-get install gimp-plugin registry

screenshot: http://tinyurl.com/p3o8gbv

Unfortunately you get a whole load of other scripts and plugins, such
is the price.. but you do get heal-selection in Filters -> enhance
and you should see resynthesizer in Filters -> Map

You copied them as root (superadministrator) user. Easiest way to fix
it is to remove them with same privilegies, then copy as ordinary
user.

Also, make sure they are executable. For that you can either run
'chmod +x ~/.gimp-2.8/plug-ins/*.py' or use file browser of your
choice.

2014-11-10 Thread Pat David
April,

The particular part of G'MIC I'm referring to is "Film Emulations". There
are quite a few different emulations for various film stocks that may get
you what you are looking for color-wise.

Bear in mind that the 'darkness' to the images in your first post are due
to a combination of processing as well as the exposure conditions at the
time. Your sample images have quite a bit of direct sunlight in them,
which makes it a bit harder to impart a sense of 'darkness' in them.

Here's a quick (<5min) edit to show what I mean:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-_BBemcslfSU/VGDsLkisGxI/SOI/qDOQTfGc6RA/s0/april-1.jpg

I used one of the film emulations (I don't remember now). Masked her to
and raised the curves to lighten her slightly. Added a vignette. Then
crushed the shadows a bit and lifted the black point (in the levels dialog
- bring the input black level up, then raise the black output level to
taste).

April,

The process to emulate those looks will be dependent on what her images
look like to start with. If you can post/send a few sample images I can
probably point you in the right direction to get started.

If I had to guess I might lean towards VSCO film presets (you can get
similar presets from the G'MIC plugin as well).

When you use FIle>Save, Gimp saves the full image as XCF format (Gimp's
native format).

If you want your image in some other format (.Jpeg, .png, .gif) you have

Unfortunately the default setup of Windows Explorer, as of Windows XP I
think, is to hide file extensions. Many people probably don't even
realise file extensions exist, let alone how to show them (or the
security implications of not knowing whether they're about to open a
.jpg or .exe file!)

For the OP and anyone else who doesn't know: from Windows Explorer open
Tools menu (Alt+T for Windows Vista and 7, which also hide the menus by
default!) > Folder Options > View > deselect "Hide extensions for known
file types" and click OK. The extension is then the part after the last
"." in the file name.

More unfortunately, in this case, that still doesn't seem to help since
extensions are still hidden in the special Fonts folder... but File >
Properties > General does shows the extension in brackets after the file
type - e.g. "Font File (.fon)" or "TrueType Font File (.ttf)" - or at
least it does on the Windows Vista system I'm on at the moment...

Looks like the original problem is solved anyway.

Could someone please give me simpler instructions on how to make my image
brighter.

The shortest way to achieve this is:
1. Select the background, i.e. with the Lasso or the Intelligents
Scissors tool or the Quickmask feature.

2. Use the Brightness/Contrast tool to adjust the brightness.

Alternatives:
If you want to have finer adjustments use the Levels tool: drag the
right and/or middle triangle slider a bit to the left.
To make the background look a bit more homogenous, use Filters/Blur/
Gaussian Blur between steps 1 and 2.
If you want to make the background pure white: use Select/Feather
to make the border of the selection a bit softer. Then drag the white
color from the Color selector into the selection.

To get rid of the disturbing upper left corner: crop it away with
the Crop tool or clone it away with the Clone tool.

Also see the [online help] and [tutorials].

Kind regards,

Sven

As you appear to be using Windows:

http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ then "Show other downloads" then "GIMP
for Windows" should eventually lead you to:
ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/help/windows/2.8/

I have not tested in details myself, but with a fast quick code check,
it looks like GIMP would use the standard method (through glib) to get
the user-defined browser.
Could you tell me what is the result to these 3 commands:

$ xdg-mime query default text/html
$ xdg-mime query default x-scheme-handler/http
$ xdg-mime query default x-scheme-handler/https

It should be the desktop file for the desired application (for
instance "firefox.desktop" if you want Firefox).
If it isn't, please set it with the following commands:

$ xdg-mime default firefox.desktop x-scheme-handler/http
$ xdg-mime default firefox.desktop x-scheme-handler/https
$ xdg-mime default firefox.desktop text/html

If you already had the right settings, but the expected browser is
still not the one to be loaded, then there is probably indeed a
problem in GIMP code.
I will wait for the verification. :-)
Thank you very much.

Use the python version of the plugin which has been updated for Gimp 2.8.x.
You should be able to locate it in the registry.

Hi Alyn,
It is not customary to publish your email address in the mailing list
requesting help off list. We can all easily see your email in the email
headers of your message. I recommend you upload the image to a sharing
site (or your own hosting) asking for how you can do what you ask. I'll
help you along the way and show you what tools will do what you ask but I
won't do it outright for you. Since it is a pic to be entered in a
competition you should really do the work yourself after consulting with us
on how to accomplish what you ask.

You should start by checking out the clone tool and the healing tool. Here
are links to the documentation for learning their use.
