[gina-users] Gina and W2K drivers
Somebody using GINA and W2K? I have some problems with BPMStudio 3.4.6, audio wont start. Is there any driver besides last beta that can avoid this problem? Also Hardware Manager insist that I have a Multimedia controller without drivers :) (maybe I have 2 GINAs? :) -- SodA - Gustavo Ruiz [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Am I wrong... There's a couple of BIOS options you might want to try tweaking, related to Plug And Play. The Gina is PCI 2.1 and plug and play capable, but I have found in the past that the drivers don't find a free IRQ very well. So likely what's happening is your Soundblaster and your GINA are settling on the same IRQ. What you need to do, is figure out which IRQ your BIOS is assigning to each of the cards on bootup. If you can't do that, and I wasn't able to see how to in the Pheonix bios, you might want to try setting the 'Plug And Play OS' flag to true, which will allow Windows to do all the IRQ settings for you. I think the BIOS will not try to do it on bootup. Let me know how things go. -Neal

wow, i'm glad i found this list. i just bought a gina card and it seems that event tech support is totally awol. i'm having trouble even installing the card. if anyone can help it would be most appreciated. also, if you could respond to my email below it would be great. it's a little long so ignore it if you want to. thanks in advance y'all. my system: dell xps 600mhz Pentium III (brand new) windows 98 (latest ver.) I really don't want to return this card so i'm going to give it another shot. Re: [gina-users] Gina Lock up
Have you tried the optimisation methods as per the VST PC home page (http://www.studio201.com/cwu/)? They are of particular importance if your video card is not in an AGP slot. Do you get the same problem with the old drivers? I use 3.08 drivers with VST and have not had this problem. BTW, regarding Steinberg support. Er, don't hold your breath. I'm not sure if I have any solutions, but I've had similar troubles. When I was working on my last song, I put a ton of mixer automation in, and I was hearing very tiny clicks as I was watching all the bars moving up and down, so I closed the Monitors. They seemed to go away. This might suggest the video refresh rate is causing interrupt problems. One of the suggested remedies is to go into your Windows Computer options (right click on 'My Computer', and go to Properties.) Then go to the Performance tab, then click the 'Graphics' button. Turn the Hardware Acceleration down to 'none'. I had decent results running in 256 color mode, with no acceleration when I was running with a PCI Video Card. I haven't had to do much since I went to AGP. You might also check the really obvious stuff, like making sure none of your levels are clipping, and that Gina is not set to the top on it's output slider. I find lowering it to the first notch down, or lower, keeps VST from clipping when it shouldn't. Hope any of this helps at all. -Neal

OK, got that disclaimer out of the way. This is a VST automation/FX thing that's been buggin me with VST 3.6 r1 and vst 3.65 When I automate my tracks and apply an effect like Waves Q6 (yes a bit of a power drain when using direct x waves plugs) everything sounds like it should with the exception of when i move the levels around abit. i get some poping noise as the processor (a mere 166mmx with 64 ram to help out) can't keep up with everything seemlessly. now i expect that and understand why that happens. what i don't like is what happens next. when i got to the save the cubase song as a mixdown file (including automation ane effects), upon playing the file back in a stereo editor (wavelab actually) those pops i heard when laying the automation down from the processor not being able to hack it from doing all the operations in real time appear in the MIXDOWN file. Now this bugs me because the same thing happpened when i applied a cubase EQ instead of a direct x plug in. inthe damn mixdown those clicks shouldn't appear or at least i wouldn't assume so because the computer isn't doing it in real time, rather it's processing all the actions i asked it to do and the limitations of the processor only make that process slower, but the final product should sound clean. when i am doing automation for like 18 tracks i get those clicks when i write the automation cause of the processor limitations, but when i listen to the save as mixdown stereo file i don't hear those clicks then. so the question i have is, do any of you know a work around to this problems, such as do i have something checked in cubase that would help this clicking problem in my fx mixdowns? you wouldn't think this would happen, but it is man. -john pemble KTPR 91.1fm Operations Manager [EMAIL PROTECTED] John Pemble has an Internet site, http://www.sonicflow.com
[gina-users] Gina dissapears
Anyone out there using Gina with Cakewalk Pro-Audio V8? I am having the consitant problem that I work within CPA recording and playing audio, and at random times, ie after no particular operation, I totally lose the Gina drivers - it no longer sees the card, nor do any of my other Audio apps, its right off the system - I have to keep rebooting. I have tried re-installing various Gina drivers from 2.5 up to 4, same problem. I do NOT have this problem working from within Saw or CoolEdit, just CPA! Ive profiled the card, done everything that is recommended - any ideas? Trish
RE: [gina-users] Gina 4.0, VST 3.6 and installation could be a nightmare
Hey, Actually, I have the Layla, but the install seemed to go fine. What I have found is that you run the echodel, but then go in and erase all the other items in the system directory that start with "echo." Then when you restart the computer, it has to look for a driver and you can supply it with the diskette. I haven't found the echodel.exe to do much of anything, but I run it first anyway. Don't have anyprograms that use the asio drivers. Fred Towne Having Fun with My Music http://www.peak.org/~townef

Hi John: I had problems with drivers 3.05, but everything went smoth with 3.08 and I'm with no problems with the 4.0 latest version, the only thing to remember is to use the delete application before installing the new drivers, I guess. [gina-users] Gina 4.0, VST 3.6 and installation could be a nightmare
Hey all, nice to see this listserv is still up. Nothing like a new driver or the spdif in clicks that plague this otherwise awesome economical card, Gina. As much as I didn't like it, I quit doing direct digital ins with my Gina's spdif in back when driver 3x series came out. The analog input (despite being unbalanced) amazingly gives a noise floor of -90db. I have had full fledged beautiful sounds come in those analog ins and monitored on the spdif OUT with no click or anything. Interesting ain't it? I am using 3.05, and would not mind trying 308 except for fear of losing the whole thing working fine. A friend put in the 308 from 205 and had a complete loss of use for the Gina after the installation. Eventually that person got the system working, after a PC pal came over and removed the 308/205 (which apparently were running simultaneously) or something and was able to get 308 going just fine. The way I came to use 305 is it happened that week of it's release last June my computer underwent a complete system reinstallation and hard drive upgrade. So the system never had an earlier driver other than 305. I am absolutely scarred shitless to even think of driver 4.0 . except I am a Cubase VST 3.6 user and have been waiting for the bloomin ASIO drivers. Funny, though I am able to use Cubase rather well with driver 305, but can imagine 4.0 making it a better experience. While I'm keeping all my audio wav files at 16bit, I am somewhat worried about going with 4.0 since as stated in the event internet page "Note to users of Cubase VST Version 3.6: The ASIO driver contained in the 4.0 release currently supports 16-bit recording only. " So does this mean since Gina is 20bit those 4 bits are truncated or are they dithered? If truncated, forget it man. So all in all, on those who have dared to go to the 4.0 PC upgrade did you have a plesant upgrading experience and if you are a VST 3.6 user are you having analog in trunc cut offs? -john pemble

Yes, I did that as well...the fact that it locks up the system solid really does suggest some sort of conflict... and it is random, I can play a file for quite awhile before it freezes and other times it happens immediately - I didnt record for more than a minute so there is no guarantee it wouldnt have happenned - I will take your suggestion and force it to accept a different IRQ, see it that solves the problem. Hi Trish, > What is happenning is that it will play the file for anything between 2 secs > or even much longer, but at some point it will freeze the entire system. > It doesnt make any difference which outputs I play from. > I dont seem to have this problem in record mode. I had a somewhat similar experience when I first installed my GINA due to an IRQ conflict I thought the GINA would detect and correct for. I have a SCSI controller in my PC, and the two cards wanted the same IRQ. I had to go into my BIOS setup and specifically assign IRQs to the various PCI slots. That cleared up my troubles. The fact that you can record audio seems to suggest that this is not your problem, however. If you have a friend with a PC you could try installing the card there and see if there are any problems with the card. If you get the same mysterious behavior there, it may be the card is a bad one. Though that would be the first I've heard of. > It is using Interrupt 12, which is available, there are no apparent system > conflicts, the Echo Reporter is happy with the system. If you have any other free IRQs, you should try those as well. Try setting the IRQ for the PCI slot in your BIOS, if it is able to do so. I have an AWARD BIOS and it is capable of assinging IRQs to the PCI slots. Currently I am running the GINA on IRQ 9, which seems to work quite well. I can also use IRQ11 without any trouble. What did Event technical support say might be the problem? Have they offered any advice? What is your Windows version? Maybe there might be patches to Windows to help things out? Just a guess. [gina-users] Gina locks up system
I have a problem with the operation of my new Gina and I'm wondering if any of you more experienced users can assist; I have installed it using the latest 3.08 drivers .When I playback a .wav file from within CoolEdit, Saw Plus or CPA the PC locks up solid. What is happenning is that it will play the file for anything between 2 secs or even much longer, but at some point it will freeze the entire system. It doesnt make any difference which outputs I play from. I dont seem to have this problem in record mode. Both programmes have been correctly set up for its usage, it is playing from all of the analogue outs, the Sp/Dif I/O I have not yet had any success with, infact using the digi out has caused a couple of blue screen fatal errors! It is using Interrupt 12, which is available, there are no apparent system conflicts, the Echo Reporter is happy with the system. Thinking there may be a problem with driver 3.08 I deleted it and installed the original driver from the Gina CD - same result. There are no other sound cards on the PC, only a Voyetra midi card. Prior to Gina installation I was using a Tahiti and Adb MultiWav Pro in this system with absolutely no problems at all. When I remove the Gina driver I have no problems at all with my apps so it seems that Gina is causing the lock-up. I would appreciate any possible solutions you can come up with to solve this problem! Many thanks, Trish Bailey . PC System Intel 233MMX PCI BIOS 2.1 64 meg ram Win 95

I want to share some experiences in the use of both soundcards when connected thru S/PDIF. As a matter of fact I'm having some little problems due to the 48kHZ issue, since I slaved my GINA with the S/PDIF out clock generated by SBLive! to avoid clicks and pops and to use the probably better GINA DA convertes, every audio I try to play in the GINA goes slower because of the conversion made by the SBLive! :( It is important to me that SBlive! can generate a clock @ 44.1kHz since almost every audio will go at last to a CD or to a friend's card wich is capable of 44.1kHz :) -- SodA - Gustavo Ruiz [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Speaking of Gina's spdif input, i have noticed on some things it inserts clicks. this recently occured with a lucid technology ada 1000 converter where the clicks and pops were very bad. now i'm noticing come clicks (although not nearly the number using the lucid) when i transfer some dat stuff using spdif. i use the panasonic sv3700. currently i am avoiding the spdif in and doing everything analog in. i get a -90db noise floor on my gina, which i consider excellent. the lucid, by the way had a floor of -84db! not good for a dedicated unit that costs more than one gina card. what i would like to know is are there other gina spdif in click stories out there. perhaps there is something not synchronizing with what i heard is called the master clock in the computer and the external device (the dat deck). is there a way to make gina synch up in all means with the external device it is digitally connected to? i do monitor all my audio with the gina spdif output and it always sounds fine. hell even the creative labs awe 64gold spdif sounds great. anway, click stories anybody? -john pemble [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] pubic radio station ktpr or didgeridoo player, audio producer & operations manager big fan of star wars & star trek - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - check out steve roach & roger king's new cd "dust to dust" for more information http://www.steveroach.com this cd is w a y c o o l
Re: [gina-users] GINA / Realtime efx / DirectX programs
So some of you out there have been voicing concerns about real time effects using gina. I myself just bought a gina but have not gotten it to integrate into my system correctly..a WHOLE other can of worms. But anyway, is all of this to say that with the current drivers, real time effects processing like reverb, delay etc. can not be relied on in a live performance scenario? Or are the problems strictly for Win98? It seems a little strange that the gina is sitting on a 66MIPS DSP and allowing it to lie dormant instead of helping with the effects workload. Is this card targeted at the recording industry alone or are there composers who have acheived any satisfying results live? I'm hoping that someone can reply and insure me that this is not only an offline studio card; but if this is the case, I will feel compelled to return my investment as performance is one of my main applications. thanks Paul Spata [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [gina-users] GINA / Realtime efx / DirectX programs
No hablo espan~ol. :) Please try to post in English so the rest of us can follow along. I studied Spanish in university but I'm way too rusty to have made much sense out of your messages. Thanks. Muchos gracias. I wrote to Event Tech support a while back and they mentioned their plans are to get Direct Sound drivers for the GINA ready, and then work on real time effects. Of course they aren't giving any dates as to when those drivers will be done. There was mention from the company that produced Gigasampler that Event cards were on the list to be supported with their product in the coming months. We'll have to keep our hopes up. I wish we could convince Event that some of us out here would like to make use of the DSP mips that the Motorola DSP on the GINA can deliver. It's a 66MIPS DSP apparently. Might be useful for realtime effects, for sure. I'll write to Event again and ask them to be put in touch with a driver developer via email, if they'll do that maybe there's hope for us users of operating systems other than Windows too. :) Thanks! Cheers. -Neal -- + Neal Sanche ++ [ [EMAIL PROTECTED] ] +-- ICQ 5516171 --+ VMS, n.: The world's foremost multi-user adventure game.

Crea varios devices virtuales? - Podes rutear cada canal por separado? Es todo por ahora.. :) -- SodA - Gustavo Ruiz [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Is there any program to use the GINA as an efx box? I assume we must wait for the DirectX drivers in order to prevent slow latency times :) BTW any news on this? I really like to use programs like ReBirth with low latency times :) -- SodA - Gustavo Ruiz [EMAIL PROTECTED]
