[JAWS-Users] Link to download/install JAWS 2018 BETA.
Hi All, I just cleaned out all my trash, and realized I lost the email that had the link to JAWS 2018. Can someone please send that? The current emails on that subject no longer have the earlier thread, and I cannot remember my password that would get me into the complete thread. Thanks! Re: [JAWS-Users] what is the key stroke for turning speech on and off in jaws?
Hi Jim, If you want to keep JAWS running but just go silent, then you do one of those layered keystrokes. In this case, that is insert + space bar, release the keys, you will hear a beep, then press s; JAWS will say "sleep on". Repeat the above steps and JAWS will say "sleep off". Remember when you kill the speech, you will not get any JAWS feedback, but JAWS is still running, and may interfere with the other operations you are performing. If you simply want to fully exit JAWS, then you can do that by insert + F4. I say insert, since that is my pattern. You can also describe it as the JAWS key. Personally, I prefer the first approach if what I want to do is just kill the speech, and that command responds quickly, unlike the delay if you unload and restart JAWS. Very strange. Later today when I get done with some business calls, I am going to uninstall Jarte, start from scratch, and see if there was some key install process button I happened across that caused my version to be totally fine and accessible right off the bat. I will report back! Hi All, I cannot now recall the exact sequence of events, but when I bring up Jarte, the title line (JAWS key plus t), says "Jarte (screen reader mode)" >From what seems apparent, Jarte is intended to be screen reader friendly. If you are not getting that same title line, then probably someone on this list will know how to get that setting correct. Re: [JAWS-Users] What program should be used to read a .doc document?
You may also find, as I did, that you need to change the file type combo box to the "all files" option, the bottom of the 5 choices. Otherwise, all you would find in your file list would be the Jarte default file format, .rtf. Specifically, with Jarte running, press control + o to open the file directory dialog. This opens a typical and very familiar File Explorer dialog. Tab once to the file type combo. The 5 listed options are, in order, as follows: Rich Text Format (*.rtf) Word Documents (*.doc) Word 2007 Documents (*.docx) Plain Text (*.txt) All files (*.*) [Note that to capture this list, I used the JAWS speech history option, JAWS key + space bar, then h. The resulting window has all this in plain text that I just copied and pasted] On that list, if you want to see just .doc, .docx, or .txt files only, arrow to the format you want and press enter. If you want to see all files in the folder, arrow to the bottom and press enter on "all files". Now you can tab, or shift tab twice, to the list of files, and there they are! I have not figured out a way to have Jarte maintain the all-files setting, so remember to first set the file type box whenever you want to use the Jarte file directory. The hint below about first finding a file and then doing the "open with Jarte" option also works. That exact same thing happened to me. The solution proved to be the following steps. Open WordPad, and press control + o to open the file directory system. The results should now be more in line with the original .doc or .docx file. Important tip! Be sure to check that file type combo box every time you open WordPad. The default setting, for example, is only for WordPad documents. You need to arrow down to the very end of the list (or use the end key), and there is the all-files filter, the only one that will show you all the files and folders on your computer. Best of luck, and hope the above helps. Try WordPad. I'm running Windows 10 Anniversary edition. Wordpad didn't work very well for me. It didn't seem to translate everything properly. By that, I mean that there were some characters/symbols that were left in the document. Specifically in the example I tried, there was a backslash (\) character at the beginning of some lines. Also, I'm not sure how the document might have looked in Word, but the formatting seemed unlikely. All the text was strung together with no logical line breaks or blank lines. Perhaps I just don't know how to use Wordpad, so if this is the case, some instructions on how to configure Wordpad would be appreciated. Otherwise, are there any other suggestions for free programs to access Word documents? I'm not looking to create or even edit Word documents, it's just that occasionally I'll be given a Word doc that I want to read and sometimes getting it in another format is not an option. Well, maybe another reason for folks who can, to upgrade to the Windows 10 level. (I appreciate that those of us in an office may be stuck with Windows 7 for some time. I resisted, but was recently forced into Windows 10 when I lost my Windows 7 laptop. I made significant use of the folks at the Microsoft Accessibility help office, and am now at least functional with the aspects of Windows a typical user like me would need to know. I still have my moments, but I eventually figure it out; yesterday for the first time ever I had that experience with the Windows wireless system settings. It was actually very cool, and had lots of options on what your computer will do when encountering a given wireless site. It also adds something Windows 7 lacked, an accessible signal strength meter, and a quick way to know if the wireless host is public or requires a password. So in closing, I suggest making the upgrade now. The free Microsoft assistance has generally been good in my individual cases, they can do a lot with remote access, and are generally more persistent than I would expect. Several times, I was ready to give up, but the Microsoft technician persevered and figured out the solution. [JAWS-Users] What program should be used to read a .doc document? Try WordPad.
Hi All, Another option might be WordPad. At least with Windows 10, WordPad will open even a .docx file, allow you to edit it, and save it back in the original doc or docx format. Just do the usual save command, control s is the shortcut, and follow the prompts to either over-right the original file, or save it under a different name. If you over-right the original file, you will lose some functions that are in the full version of Word, but you will not lose text or even most of the format, fonts, etc. I do not know how much of that works in Windows 7 WordPad, but I know for sure it does with Windows 10; I just tried it. Re: [JAWS-Users] browsers
Okay, here is one old JAWS user's opinion. I Am now using Chrome as my primary browser. Things load more reliably, fewer lockups, more stable streaming video. It was a long time coming for me to make the switch, but I just found more and more times ending up having to use Chrome because IE and Firefox were mis-firing. Yes, Chrome does operate differently and takes a bit of time to get used to, but for purposes of reading what is on the web page, Chrome works the same with JAWS navigation as is the case for IE or Firefox. In fact, my transition to Chrome started by my having links in emails open in Chrome, since that provided me with the web page all ready to read. From there over time I learned the other basics such as saving favorites, and about a month ago realized that Chrome had become my general use browser, so I made the final switch and Chrome is now the default browser for all purposes. [JAWS-Users] An easier approach. Reading comments in word using JAWS
Hello Helga, There is a very handy JAWS method to more easily accomplish the task of reading comments imbedded in a Word document. When in the document, press/hold the Windows key, and press the ; key. That brings up a nice and clean JAWS box in which you can arrow to and press enter on any of the four options, comments, footnotes, endnotes, or revisions. Pressing enter on comments will give you what you want, a nice clean box in which the author of the note is shown, and the full text of the comment is displayed, and you can easily read the text with the usual arrow reading commands. (You can copy and paste any of that material, which is what I would do to put together a document back to the commenter, as opposed to trying to enter your own comments directly into the base Word document.) For each comment, there is a link you can press, and that takes you to that part of the document. The above works the same for the four categories, comments, footnotes, endnotes, revisions. The above works for me, and I cannot imagine an easier system for use with JAWS. Good luck. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Not Starting At Logon Screen Windows 7 Pro
I also am experiencing what seems to be the same problem, a lack of JAWS speech at logon. I am running Windows 10 and JAWS 17, final public release version. On this new Asus laptop, it seems that if I do a complete shut-down command, JAWS does not speak the first time I try to boot. I have found that if I do a hard boot after the first failed boot, JAWS does come up at the password field as it should. I did not have this problem with my old laptop that I had been using up until a week or two ago. That machine was also running final JAWS 17 release version, but under a Windows 7 Pro 32 bit HP laptop. I will play around with this new issue and see if I can find a solution, or at least an identifiable problem. I will also have a working set of eyes check out the screen when I do my first boot of the day; it seems to be a morning thing with this new machine. Doing an extra reboot is not a big deal of course, so long as JAWS continues to come up talking after the second boot! [JAWS-Users] How to capture system information
You can get that text by using the JAWS layered keystrokes of JAWS key plus space bar, then h for the JAWS speech history buffer. You do this right after having read the information, regardless of whether in or out of review mode. Copy the string of text you want; I typically just press control a to select all, control C for copy, then paste into Word. I then edit that to have just the portions of text I want. Give it a try, it helps with all instances of wanting to capture something JAWS said, since the buffer includes JAWS prompts and messages. When I begin to type, the first few letters are spoken by jaws even though I've always had this setting to echo speech off. The more frustrating thing is that focus will jump around and what I type is spread out all over the document. This is especially annoying when I'm working off a template text and have to go hunt for the stray letters. The thing is, if I type the first couple of letters and then erase them, everything works fine. I have to believe that in all my typing, I must have accidentally enabled some sort of odd setting since this has only been a recent issue and I don't experience it in a standard Word document. Only in Outlook messages. My version of Outlook is 2010 and my messages are set to HTML. I am using the most recent version of Jaws 18. Does anyone have an idea of what may be causing this issue or what setting I might try to change to fix it? That or is there some sort of set to default setting in Outlook for composing messages? JAWS REPAIR SEQUENCE This is the procedure for initiating a repair in Jaws. Press spacebar and then the following command line. /type repair That is space, forward slash immediately followed by the word type, space, the word repair 6. Copy or cut the entire sequence onto your clipboard. 7. Open the Run option by pressing WINDOWS+R. 8. Use CONTROL+V to paste the command line into the Run field. Press Enter. 9. Return to the Notepad screen and close the file. 10.The function will continue automatically until the system requests a Restart. Press enter to initiate that process. NOTE: If the latest version of Jaws is already present in your system and you try to execute the new file, a warning message will appear, directing you to use Control Panel to remove the current version before attempting to install the new one. If you have more than one version of Jaws on your system or you are familiar with how to operate narrator, this might not be a problem. My manager at work thinks it would be a good idea for me to put my copy of JAWS 18 Pro onto my personal laptop in case the need arises for me to work from home. As the authorisation CD is 200 miles away in London with my company's IT department. I just thought it might be simpler if I asked on here if there was a way to retrieve it. I apologise if that reason isn't good enough for anyone. Once again, many thanks for your assistance. Adam. On 27/11/2016, Gene Warner <genewarn...@gmail.com> wrote: Hi All! I don't know what all the fuss over the authorization code is. When I first bought JAWS some three years ago, they provided a disc which had the information JAWS needs to start the activation process, the rest comes from Freedom Scientific's activation servers. Ever since then, if I needed to activate JAWS after reinstalling Windows, all I needed was my JAWS serial number, which I memorized. Of course I've always done my activations over the internet, the activation code might be needed if you are doing a manual activation. Cheers! I just tried entering *.wav into the Windows key search box, and you will get a vertical list of all files in any folder that have the .wav extension. Try Microsoft's feature for travel directions. I get there using bing.com, and in the search box, I enter something to the effect of "How far is it from a to b?" (Do not enter the " signs.) Hi Dave, Thank you so much for the hint about how to identify the USB 3.0 port. I had not noticed that before, but sure as heck, I could easily tell them apart based upon your description. To do that, select the text, cut or copy, go to where you want the results, press the applications key (or shift f10) go down to paste special, and select text only. Another option is to do a save-as for the document, and tab to the box where you select the format you want; you will see plain text on that list, just press enter. [JAWS-Users] Program that is JAWS friendly to play movies on DVD.
The only accessible player I know of is from IRTI, and costs $29.95 via download; $59.95 if you want them to ship you the install CD. Although you can use it just fine with JAWS running, it has its own voice, and works best in that mode, so when you bring up the program, it is best to put JAWS to sleep by either exiting JAWS, or better yet, putting JAWS to sleep with the insert key space bar, then s. Here is the link to all the info. You will for sure want the instruction manual, which IRTI can give you, also by download or email attachment. I have the software, and it works just fine. Re: [JAWS-Users] muted the speakers by accident
Hi Petras, The problem is that the mute box became checked. I have had that happen in the past, where some mysterious force checked the box. One time it happened when I was using an external multi media keyboard, which had an extra row of keys along the right side. The one just to the right of the enter key was the mute key. I hit the mute key by accident. The solution, once I came to that realization, was to get that same keyboard and press the mute key to bring the sound back. In any case, you will need to go into the control panel, to the place where the sound options are kept, where the volume controls are. One of those will be a mute box that kills the sound. Since you have no sound, you will need sighted assistance to bring your sound back. Tab again, and you will be in a text box you can read with the up an down arrow keys. It describes just how to enter/format the search information. Re: [JAWS-Users] This Did Not Happen With the Previous JFW16.0 build
Hi All, There is another common and irritating JAWS issue I sure hope FS can work on. With internet browsers, JAWS will constantly repeat the title area of a web page as it is loading. Hitting the control key does not stop the repeated speaking of the title by JAWS. It can happen a dozen times or more, depending on the web page. This happens with IE, Firefox, and Chrome. Re: [JAWS-Users] Issues with Netflix and a laptop using JAWS 16
I have tried and failed to navigate the audio description part of Netflix. The problem is a strange one, and easily fixable by Netflix. When you go to Netflix and have your profile on the screen, near the bottom of that page is a link to audio description. Clicking on that link gives you a page that has all the audio described content. However, there is no accessible way to tell it to play the audio described version; they have a separate set of buttons that my sighted daughter can navigate, but not me. Netflix simply should change the default so when somebody navigates to the audio description content page, clicking on the Y player brings up the intended audio described version. [JAWS-Users] JAWS 16 and Streaming Video, Best performance is with Google Chrome.
Hi All, I never thought I would ever write a subject line that claims Google Chrome as the best functioning browser with JAWS, but I am now, for the limited purpose of streaming video. Going back to perhaps JAWS 15, I started having lockup problems when trying to access streaming video. This lockup would happen with either IE or Firefox, Firefox being worse, locking up to the point of having to reboot the computer. At some point, I noticed that JAWS 16 was performing its lockup recovery, and if I was patient, JAWS would come up and the video would start. Once I was able to play at least one video, matters seemed to calm down and things worked okay. At one point I discovered that if I exited JAWS just before pushing the final command to start a video, the video would start quickly, and I could then re-start JAWS without a problem. A few days ago I went to Google Chrom, and tried streaming video from Netflix, Youtube, and others. Everything worked just fine, and videos started quickly. I found JAWS to work just fine with Chrome for this limited purpose. Turning off quick key navigation (insert an the letter z) allowed access to the Youtube video navigation keys. I waited a few days so I could continue to try using Chrome for video. I am now satisfied that Chrome is indeed the best functioning browser with JAWS for streaming video. I agree that non-compliant programs should not be purchased in the first place. But if accessibility issues are later found, Section 508 clearly puts the burden on the seller's shoulders. I know I can from within a new email message go to the to button and look up people to add from my address book, but I find that to be too tedious and time consuming. I'm trying to add a bunch of people by first pressing the control button and then going down my address book with the down arrow and pressing the spacebar on those who I wish to email. I guess it would be the command for selecting noncontiguous items in a list. Anyway, After I select the people I wish to email, I press the control+N command but instead of an email message popping up with the previously selected contact emails in the to field, I get the prompt to create a new contact. I've tried different versions of the same. By selecting my contacts then tabbing around in the ribbons to select the new mail option and so on, but no dice. I got this step by step instruction online, but so far, I've had no luck. Am I somehow missing a step or can someone enlighten me as to how to best do this? This is not for distribution lists as I would like to email different groupings of people at different times. I'm using Outlook 2010 and the latest Jaws 16. Thank you,. Re: [JAWS-Users] 15 Coolest Firefox Tricks Ever
Hi All, A recent post included a link to an article on cool things you can change in Firefox. I made one series of the recommended changes, and with terrific results! I greatly improved my Firefox performance, on web page loading, streaming video now starts playing much more quickly. Just below I have pasted in the portion I had such good luck with. The full article is at the following link: http://www.lifehack.org/articles/technology/15-coolest-firefox-tricks-ever.html Here is the top of that article and the portion I am referring to, which changes Firefox to better utilize high speed Internet service. The author says that the default Firefox settings are designed to maximize old slow dialup service. The changes really did the trick for me. Tim Ford 15 Coolest Firefox Tricks Ever FEATURED TECHNOLOGY BY LEO BABAUTA banner end Everybody’s favorite open-source browser, Firefox, is great right out of the box. And by adding some of the awesome extensions available out there, the browser just gets better and better. But look under the hood, and there are a bunch of hidden (and some not-so-secret) tips and tricks available that will crank Firefox up and pimp your browser. Make it faster, cooler, more efficient. Get to be a Jedi master with the following cool Firefox tricks. … 12) Speed up Firefox. If you have a broadband connection (and most of us do), you can use pipelining to speed up your page loads. This allows Firefox to load multiple things on a page at once, instead of one at a time (by default, it’s optimized for dialup connections). Here’s how: list of 5 items • Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Type “network.http” in the filter field, and change the following settings (double-click on them to change them): • Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true” • Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true” • Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to a number like 30. This will allow it to make 30 requests at once. • Also, right-click anywhere and select New- Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0″. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. list end [Note from Tim: In the last step above, I entered a 1 to replace the ″. That was purely a guess, but Firefox works much better. However, since I made the other changes all at the same time, I have no idea which items contributed to the improvement in what proportion.] For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws commands for editing footnote?
After you do the steps of windows key plus ;, press enter on footnotes, press enter on the link to the footnote you want, your cursor will be either in or very close to the place where you can edit the footnote text. At this point, be sure to use the arrow keys for navigation, and you should be able to perform those edits. When you are done, using the arrow keys will return you to the main portion of the document.Try using -Original Message- From: Mohib Anwar Rafay Sent: Friday, March 13, 2015 3:00 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws commands for editing footnote? Actually when I am clicking on the link of footnote in this virtual window, it is bringing the cursor at the footnote number in the main text where it was inserted. and not in the footnote pain where I am ready to edit the footnote. Therefore I haven't got any method so far which could help me landing in footnote pain in order to edit it. Only manually reaching is known so far. Re: [JAWS-Users] problem with the application information in IE11
The applications key shows context-driven options. The two different lists you show above are for two different situations, the first is when you are on a link, and that list gives you the options on what you can do with that link. The second list you show is for when you are on a web page, but not on a link; the list is giving you options for web page navigation and other options relating to the entire web page you are currently viewing. The applications key is always context-driven, in all programs; there thus is no set list. If I have anything wrong on the above, hopefully someone else on the list will jump in and correct any mis-statements.
