I don't know about 10.8, but in 10.7 I was always launching the Dashboard (the thing that holds widgets) until I went in and changed my mouse settings. I have an older mouse with the scroll wheel and apparently the wheel was set to launch Dashboard when you click on it. Might check there and see

I love and use ToodleDo all the time. It is a web app on the Mac and an iOS app with versions for iPhone and iPad. It is a lot better looking now than it used to be and works quite well. It may be overkill for what you need, but I haven't found anything better for my heavy use.
