Re: [MBZ] Headlight Troubles
Hopefully it's just the socket for the bulb -- take the bulb out and take a look. They tend to corrode, and a bad connection will cause low current flow (and a melted socket from the extra resistance, alas). The bulb can also be going bad, and this will cause the problem as well. Clean and grease, or a new bulb should fix it. However, I found I had a wiring problem on the 300D, or a bad bulb out warning relay ($200 +), so I ran a new wire. The lamp out bulb is always on on low beam and most of the time now anyway -- I suspect the relay, but haven't popped for one yet. Check the voltage at the lamp socket -- if you don't have battery voltage, it's wiring or the relay. Peter

No, that's for CO control on decel, I think -- certainly it was true on the 75 Audi that had plain K-Jet. KE-Jet won't have the problem since the mixture is controlled closer. Peter
[MBZ] power steering filter / fluid change
Given the great Iowa weather (about 60F) I decided to go ahead with this task after work today. I have to wonder when or even if the fluid was last changed. It was really dark and dirty looking. And what is with that ceramic-looking filter I removed? Is that factory? Opted to not put in Mobil 1 yet, for two reasons: (1) it wasn't available for purchase at either of the local auto parts stores, and (2) I want to dilute the crap that is still in the lines with less expensive ATF before I re-drain and put in Mobil 1, probably in a month or so. -- 1977 240D 1983 VW Quantum turbo diesel 5-speed 1972 Honda CB-500K motorcycle http://www.airamericaradio.com/listen

Re: [MBZ] power steering filter / fluid change
Going very well. My $50 car is now a $400 car with new tires still to follow. It is up on four jack stands at the moment, over in Jeff's (brother-in-law, hopefully coming to OkieQ 2006) garage. So far [major stuff only] -- new half-shaft (Rusty), new starter (Rusty), and new brake master cylinder (Rusty). New parking brake cable went on last night (Rusty). Tomorrow / Friday, new rear brakes (Loren Faith's garage, God bless him). Jeff will repack wheel bearings while stuff is being put back together. Oh, yea, Jeff threw on a new exhaust resonator one day while the car was up on the lift where he works. ($0) Does need a new muffler someday. Minor stuff -- four new headlights, all new rubber fuel lines, new filters everywhere I could find, oil change (Mobil 1 of course), etc. Power steering filter is still in the trunk, to be installed sometime in the future. Valve adjustment is down the road. This is going to be a kick ass car. Will probably ($$$ permitting) have a veggie oil system installed in the trunk within the next year. 45 mpg on French fry grease -- don't you just love it? Note to list -- make friends with Loren 'cause he knows where the bargain diesels sit, just waiting for someone to revive them. D. To check the ground, with the lights on, connect a voltmeter (set on DC volts) from the brown wire on the back of the plug to a known good ground. It should read nearly zero. RLE

Didn't want to mix half expensive stuff with half really old stuff. Might drain once a week and refill for a month or so, then go Mobil 1. I have 1.5 quarts of Mystic left to use up. On 3/1/06, Loren Faeth [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Don, A recent NAPA flyer listed NAPA full synthetic. Maybe you or Jeff could figure out if it is made by mobil. -- 1977 240D 1983 VW Quantum turbo diesel 5-speed 1972 Honda CB-500K motorcycle http://www.airamericaradio.com/listen ___ http://www.striplin.net For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://striplin.net/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_striplin.net ___ http://www.striplin.net For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://striplin.net/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_striplin.net -- 1977 240D 1983 VW Quantum turbo diesel 5-speed 1972 Honda CB-500K motorcycle http://www.airamericaradio.com/listen

Re: [MBZ] Headlight Troubles
For the last two weeks my right front headlight has had a poltergeist. Sometimes when I turn on the headlights, the little warning light comes on telling me that a light is out. When I look at the headlight it is noticeably dimmer than the other. HOWEVER, just as often, the headlights are fine and the little warning light does not come on. Do I have a bulb problem or short in the wiring? Also, when the headlight is dim and the warning light is on I can put the brights on and the warning light goes away (I don't think this indicates anything, I think this is what sis supposed to happen). Any thoughts? Did anybody mention fuses yet? But yes, it's a bad connection somewhere along the line. Seek and destroy! Re: [MBZ] Project 240D in Oregon
Good luck with that 240D tomorrow. Hopefully, it won't be a costly project. I'm back, and I bought the car. It's late and I'm tired, but basically it looks OK for the price, no rust that I could see. Whatever is wrong with its go-ness isn't a slipping tranny so far as I could tell. I can state that the throttle linkage is all crapped up, and from the feel of it there's only partial application of the throttle. Shift points are very weird, the tranny is heavily into kickdown-ness at all times. That is not to say that there isn't tranny trouble too, there's an odd groaning whine that reminds me of an old school bus, it could be that the TC also isn't happy. Or maybe just bad mounts somewhere. The car moved well in 1 and R, and hopped up on the trailer with no trouble. -- Jim

I'm thinking of checking this one out. Here's the link to it on CL. http://portland.craigslist.org/car/138182748.html This is what the guy wrote in his response. I have had this car for about 2 years. It is an automatic. Has always been on the road. The only major work I had done to it was to have the steering/ignition lock replaced when it broke. Brakes are ok, transmission has a little slipping but hasn't been a problem, no leaking.. Went to Yakama last summer and it took the mountains OK. Pretty strong engine. Mileage has always been around 15-20, usually closer to 20. Interior is not leather, I've got covers for the front seats, back seats don't need them. Most gages work. Vacuum system is not hooked up. Great heater, air conditioner not filled. THE PROBLEM: Has suddenly sprung an oil leak. Always used a little oil but this is something else. Not sure where it originates. Uses about a quart of oil every 40 miles and looses oil when parked. My guy says he can't tell where it is coming from without getting into it. I don't have the time, talent or cash to get into it right now. My guy figures seals. I know that it is a rare turbio diesel 300CD, but is this one that could be somethin', or a junkyard fugitive? Re: [MBZ] Light out
Loose grounds can cause all sorts of fun; on the 85 300D I had the following symptoms: RH blinker would not work with lights on and in reverse -or- with lights on and foot on brake RH Front blinker and dash blinker was illuminating very dimly under those conditions, and somewhat noticably when all three occurred. I ultimately traced it to the ground wire on the RH Rear bulb cluster; the bolt holding it had someply come loose. Snugging the bolt back up made the problems all go away! Somebody has, it was a convertible top pump from, IIRC, a GM car. I was thinking that if I ran the pump a bit at startup, the car would slowly drop during the trip, assuming the control valve would drop a little pressure every time the rear suspension extended after a bump. I suppose that wouldn't be a problem on short trips. Maybe put the pump on a timer, and have it run 30 seconds every time I start the car or push a button? The factory SLS pump is simple and reliable, but I do wonder how much power it consumes, or if a pump problem on the cam driven pump could cost you a timing chain.

Around here in New England 300CD's do seem to be rare. Fellow lister John Peterson and I found one-a good 15 foot car-but had window seal issues, trany had shift and slip issues-some of the slip may hve been due to dragging brakes. Could be had for about 1500. It is stored in a heated garage. Seems to be not quite pristine ecnogh for a collector and too many mechanical questions to be a cheap dialy driver. But it is a sweet looking car-baby blue,no visible rust from 10'. Could be a good project though for the right owner. Nice to be back on the list. [MBZ] 190D rides again!
So once again I've picked up my 190D from the Indy. Some of you might remember how it wouldn't shift into reverse. My Indy took the shifter all apart, cleaned out 21 years of crud and replaced the shift bushings. That took it from a super sloppy mystery shifter (you shift and hope the gear you get is the one you wanted) to a normal good shifting car. The reverse gate now works exactly as I'd expect it to, slide to the right, push down, pull back. 5th is now very easy to get into as well which is good I'm sure my fuel mileage was suffering by my not shifting into it before. ALSO now the shifter doesn't lean so far to the side in 1st and 5th so I can hook the boot to the base without it pulling the base up, nice. I like driving this car so much I'm now thinking I should turn down Fred's offer of a set of used seat bottoms and instead invest in brand new seat bottoms and pads for that new seat feel. -Curt '85 190D Dory 234kmi '83 240D Hammie 254kmi - Yahoo! OMG LOL LAMO ROTFLMAO and other expressions of hysteria. It seems like hardly a week goes by that somebody on here needs to be told that FLAPS is friendly local auto parts store. Thats really one of my favorites because it means I don't need to give you a name for a store which you might not have. People outside of MA are unlikely to have CAP, and MA doesn't have a Shucks or Checker, central MA doesn't have a Pep Boys either that I know of. SWMBO is handy for those unmarried souls living in sin or whatever. AFAIK is alot easier than typing out as far as I know, another handy one is FWIW or IMO. I've never seen IME (in my experience) but it seems logical. -Curt net lurker since '95 when I had a lynx login to a VAX server. Which was basically when I came back to school after my first semester of college. I'd gotten on the Dean's list despite my Gopher proclivities. 3 semesters later I was on the President's list, go figure. Re: [MBZ] Door seals
How hard is it to replace the door seals on an '85 190D? It ought to be a straightforward job. IIRC, a putty knife and some weatherstrip glue are both required to do it. Are you _sure_ your seals are shot? If they're not all torn up it could be that the door is misadjusted, or the window frame area has gotten a bit bent and no longer presses the seal against the door frame properly. It's pretty sad to replace a seal only to find that it didn't fix the problem. So, how do the seals _look_? -- Jim

Re: [MBZ] 190D rides again!
Curt Raymond wrote: So once again I've picked up my 190D from the Indy. Great to hear that you find the car so much fun to drive (I agree). Let me caution you. DO NOT hurry to shift into 5th or even 4th when driving at speeds less than 40-45 mph. Allow the engine to wind out to 3000+ in each gear. That will NOT increase fuel consumption (may even improve it slightly). I've been driving 190D 5 speeds (three of them with 2.0, 2.2 and 2.5 liter engines) for more than 12 years (and 250kmi) and have tried driving them almost every way they can be driven (including getting the gear box into 5th as soon as possible). The most common causes of poor fuel economy (after fuel leaks) are poor quality fuel (good fuel can improve fuel economy by 10-20%) and improper operating temp (a thermostat that's stuck even a little open can lower fuel economy in city/stop-and-go driving by 30% or more). Allowing the engine to lug can easily degrade economy by 10% or more. Shifting to a higher gear too soon - before the engine will be at least at the low end of the torque plateau in the gear (that's in the low/mid 2000 rpm range - the actual torque peak is at 2800, but it's very broad and almost flat) results in the excessive fuel consumption! Improper injection timing and poor injector condition (improper pressures or spray pattern) usually only have a minor effect of fuel economy until they are way off and usually there is some other presenting problem (noise, poor idle, smoke) before poor fuel economy is noticed. Re: [MBZ] I found an 82 300CD
Kevin, depends; how much is he willing to pay you to take it? ;-) about 8K turbo CDs were brought to the USA according to the figures i've seen. whether or not that's rare in your book is relative. with all the things you list being out of wack it would appear that this vehicle wasn't likely to have been owned by someone who cared for it and took care of it as (i would think) it should have been. clues: why would someone *not* fix the vacuum issue? that means that the front seats probably don't even lock down in place; a feature unique to the coupes. that's a potential safety issue to me; and indicative of that owners priorities,... why would someone *not* fix the AC? even if the issue was only that it needed to be refilled and they didn't even do that, without freon the seals in the system will dry out and become brittle, potentially necessitating a complete rebuild of the entire system before it will work properly and hold a charge again. this also means (amongst other things) that the defroster dry air and won't work properly; probably not something you'd consider optional in your area. price out the repairs on that rebuild, and you'll run away screaming. transmission has a little slipping? could be simple, could be much worse. *most* gages work? which ones don't, and why not? if you have many thousands of dollars set aside to repair a vehicle that has an absolutely perfect chassis but needs lots of other help, it *might* be worth taking, but this doesn't sound likely. bottom line, this doesn't sound like a car somebody cared about the way i'd want someone to if i was thinking of buying from them. cheers! e I'm thinking of checking this one out. Re: [MBZ] Door seals
Good point, the seal looks pretty good but seems to be squashed down in just the upper corner of the door. The door *looks* fine, the gap between door and body looks fine and is even all the way around. How would I know if the door is bent? How would such a thing happen and how would I fix it? Block the door open with a 2x4 and lean on the top a little? As I say I stuck a piece of zip tie under the seal, so between the seal and the top of the door, in the same plane as the road. That seemed to cut the noise down which makes me think I should revisit the gap at the top of the door. How do I adjust that? -Curt Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2006 08:08:08 -0800 From: Jim Cathey [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] Door seals To: Mercedes Discussion List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed How hard is it to replace the door seals on an '85 190D? It ought to be a straightforward job. IIRC, a putty knife and some weatherstrip glue are both required to do it. Are you _sure_ your seals are shot? If they're not all torn up it could be that the door is misadjusted, or the window frame area has gotten a bit bent and no longer presses the seal against the door frame properly. It's pretty sad to replace a seal only to find that it didn't fix the problem. So, how do the seals _look_? -- Jim - Yahoo! Mail Bring photos to life! New PhotoMail makes sharing a breeze. Re: [MBZ] 190D rides again!
40-45mph? Good lord I don't even think about 5th until I'm above 55. In actuality getting on the highway I don't get into 4th until around 50. Supposedly this car has like year old injectors which I think is possible, it sounds a bit more like a big rig diesel than either my 240D or 300TD did. It did quiet down a bit with Mobil 1 in the crankcase. I need to do return lines, in fact I put together a list on Rusty's site today (BTW the new site looks great guys but Hursty, if you're gonna say between you gotta have 2 numbers, between 30 Mercedes doesn't make sense) and with all my needs and *wants* filled in its like $400... Shoulda done that last month and gotten a specially good deal. Economy continues to improve as the old crappy fuel gets more diluted. I need to lay off the throttle some to get the economy way up. I started into that today, unlike my 240D I don't need to floor it every time I take off from a stop. -Curt '85 190D Dory 234kmi '83 240D Hammie 254kmi Date: Thu, 02 Mar 2006 11:37:55 -0500 From: Marshall Booth [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] 190D rides again!
Question: Is the auto tranny an issue in the Coupes specifically? (not sure why it'd be peculiar to the Coupe, - just asking). Or is this common in a lot of auto tranny 300Ds? The 300 CD we looked at in AZ had shifting issues too. He said it was slipping, but the dealer fixed it. Later, he neglected to mention the dealer part. When we rode in it, it shifted very hard, seemed it wanted to chirp the tires. I did notice, though, that it was something like a pint - a quart low on ATF. But he said it had had shifting issues for some time. Brian 83 240D _ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! [MBZ] W123 power steering filter
Got to thinking (always dangerous) ... When I put in the new power steering filter yesterday afternoon ('77 240D), there was nothing that I saw to indicate which side went up. I guessed and at 2 am this morning suddenly realized that I'd probably guessed wrong. Over the lunch hour, I drained the fluid (it was already pretty dirty from mixing in with what was in the lines) and this time put the filter in with the plate on the top. I then did NOT use the plate that I'd removed with the factory (?) filter. Is the plate side of the filter supposed to be on the top? In case anyone is wondering, I did look thru the maintenance CDs but couldn't find anything beyond how to check the fluid level. Nothing on the filter itself. -- 1977 240D 1983 VW Quantum turbo diesel 5-speed 1972 Honda CB-500K motorcycle http://www.airamericaradio.com/listen
[MBZ] OT but sort of a continuation of the lights thread
I am having an issue with my 98 F150. It started out with the dash indicator for the right side turn signals not lighting up and the tick tick being too fast. I initially thought a bulb had gone bad. But, it was sort of intermittent. It would be fine at some times and not at others. I thought the filament must be touching sometimes and being bounced apart at others. One day when it acted up I got out and looked to see if it was front or back. The back bulb was flashing away faster than normal. The front was not flashing so I thought I had my culprit. I changed the front right bulb and it seemed to be OK. Turned out not to be so then I started thinking a bad ground on that corner. That was only Tuesday so I have not had a chance to look again - especially since we got another dose of winter - fresh snow and quite a bit of it. This morning I noticed that the right signal does not seem to work properly if I lift the turn signal stalk the whole way. If I just lift it a bit like one would do to change lanes etc then it seems to work fine. Question is, can it be a ground issue or may I have something going wrong with the switch itself. I hope not as that will be much messier and more expensive to fix. Any experts out ther? Randy B
