The Common Tern I found on May 1 is still present today at the marsh on the
north side of Co. Rd. 27 a mile east of Co. Rd. 1. This is north of Pennock
a few miles. The Terns are on the center island with 17 Forster's Terns.

I had a second Swainson's Hawk this morning on MN 277 north of Gluek--not
sure if I was in Chippewa or Swift at the time. I also have a second-hand
report of multiple BLGR at one of the old Renville County BLGR sites (280th

There is a Snowy Egret in Willmar in the newly formed wetland along the
Willmar bypass (US 71/MN 23). This is just south of Willmar Avenue or CR
23. The wetland is on the east side of the bypass, and there is a gravel
entrance ramp you can drive down from CR 23 to get close to the wetland.

The Surf Scoter found by Randy Frederickson on Sunday was present today as
of 11:40 in the exact same spot it was originally found on Lake
Lillian--south shoreline about 150 yards east of where CR 8 goes south.

Late this afternoon Brad Nelson called to tell me he found a Long-tailed
Duck on Lake Ripley in Litchfield. It was about 150 feet off the eastern
shore, straight out from the boat launch. This is just south of the city
park.
According to the MOU database, Lake Ripley is a hotbed of sea duck
Joel Schmidt and Joel Halbritter relocated the two SUSC in the same
location on Lake Lillian at about 9:45 this morning. They are in the NE
corner of the lake, about 150 feet off shore moving south along the shore.

About 2:40 I found two Surf Scoters on Lake Lillian near the northeast
corner of the lake, viewed from CR 4. This is a first county record.

There is a flooded field spot on 135th St NE a quarter mile south of US Hwy
12 that has had a nice variety of shorebirds the past couple days. Today's

Garrett Wee and I searched all around Salt Lake from 5:30-7:15 and could
not find any Terns.
There are hundreds of shorebirds. Notables included a single Willet on the
SD side, a couple Sanderlings, many Wilson's Phalaropes, and a Dunlin.
There were also many Eared Grebes.

There is a Varied Thrush visiting a feeder at a residence just south of
Diamond Lake in Kandiyohi County. It is visiting a feeder at 4659 Diamond
Lane. Visitors are welcome, and the feeders can be viewed from your car in
the small parking area. The bird is present this morning.

This afternoon at 4:09 I found a Townsend's Solitaire in Cook along 5th St.
SE in front of the hospital. The bird flew south along 5th St. toward 3rd
Ave. SE where it landed at the top of a spruce on the east side of 5th and

As I look at various county maps, I'm seeing this road marked as either CR
19 or CR 88. I'm not sure which is the correct number. Regardless, this
5-mile, east-west road runs from US 71 to CR 8. It is immediately south of
Willmar, just south of Mills Ford and just north of the Arnold's
miles east of US 71,
just SE of Willmar.
I'd love for some experts to weigh in on this.

Other fun birds I saw here were Dickcissels, Western Meadowlarks, and some
shorebirds flying overhead that I couldn't identify.

Audubon Guide Bird App on my iPod. The first call (not
song) listed under TRKI was the closest match to what I heard come from the
bird in question.
After observing the bird for 20 minutes or so, it flew down to a low perch
right along the path giving Matt and myself excellent looks.

Steve Gardner and I saw one Common Eider directly in front of the Essentia
Health Building at 2:00. We also saw a juvenile Harlequin Duck. The
Harlequin was last seen near the 21st Ave parking area.
I also received word that the White-winged Scoter on Green Lake in Spicer
was still present
it was a different
bird.

Maybe this is the tip of a Snowy Owl spear?

I've visited the Least Tern location on and off throughout the day and have
not seen them.
Lots of Blue Grosbeaks at Blue Mounds State Park - 3 males and a female in
the vicinity of the Interpretive Center; two males and a Red-headed
Woodpecker near north end of the prairie by the beach area.
On
the jump soon if it hasn't already!

word from Ron Erpelding that he and Herb found another Blue
Grosbeak male at the Gneiss Outcrops SNA near Granite Falls in Chippewa
County. He may have more information on where that bird was located.
