Re: [QUAD-L] New wheelchair?
Hey guys. Haven't been around for long time. Had lots of stuff going on. I agree that invacare sucks. I have one. The foot rest broke and hadn't had it two weeks. When going around the corner, I broke my leg in 3 places. I was going around the corner; it slipped off the foot. It snapped sounding like when Joe Theisman broke his while playing for the Redskins. As far as Medicare, the suck. My chair won't go in tilt because of a worn out button and they denied it. When I got new set up for front caster wheel, the guy didn't tighten the bolts enough so needed a new one. The technition (who is amazing) couldn't find one long enough after going to home depot and an auto parts store so he got the closest he could find. He repaired it and put lock tight til Medicare would approve new set up. He said it shouldn't be a problem and Medicare denied it. Now that speed issue you just mention is quite an interesting one and never heard of it before! Be forewarned Invacare electronics are nothing but garbage and completely unreliable! I've had every black box on my chair replace 3 to 4 times and some of them even more than that. My last chair had some minor problems as an Invacare product but six months after owning this chair it mysteriously stalled out and had to be manually turned off and restarted which I can't do! After hours with the technical support and regional representative visiting me he never did figure it out even after I stalled out on the railroad tracks with a freight train coming! Completely frustrated I switched repair shops and they were able to install a switch so I could restarted myself. If you are on the road as much as I am or out in the bad weather be prepared for breakdown and inconvenience at the stupidest times. I have the Ranger X with the main controller mounted on the front of the frame only covered partially by their factory cover! Water kicked up by the front wheels was wreaking havoc both the controller and the gearless brushless motors. A passing car splashed water on me during a light rain storm and killed my chair nearly 2 1/2 hours until it dried out. Finally somebody in the repair shop added about six or 8 inches of sheet metal to the front cover extending it back almost to the battery box. I still have to be careful was slushy snow and heavy downpours but for the most part it's 100 times better than the original. There are many other things that have gone wrong due to the inferior quality of their product! I will also be getting a new chair this year and have told my dealer no Invacare. I hope this helps in some degree. Re: [QUAD-L] DORS closing my case
I'm having surgery Tues. so I am going to talk with the doctor more in detail about it while I am in the hospital. He is really encouraging me to get back to school so I am sure he will provide whatever is neccessary for DORS. I will also talk with the plastic surgeon about the pressure sore problems I had in previous years. He is the one who found the infection in the bone and removed it so it finally healed. Re: [QUAD-L] DORS closing my case
That concerns me because I didn't call them last time but I did previously with the pressure sores. I don't have record of that but they are aware that I am getting surgery again. Last year, I broke my back getting into my chair and I didn't call anyone but 911. I was getting dilated shot in my hip and then didn't remember anything for a while. I went through depression in the hospital because of the many surgeries I had to get and didn't talk to my counselor til after I came home a couple of months later. Its a shame because they changed my case to someone else, I spoke to her about it and then they switched my case back to my old counselor. I am not so crazy about all of them up there at all. I have had a lot of counselors in a few years and this last one has been with me a few years, He has CP but still doesn't seem very empathetic and I thought he would be. I will do what I can, even if it's from rehab and involve anyone I can. All of my doctors are really supportive and will help with anything I need. I have my records from last year, I will get a copy for this year and a note from them stating what is going on and how long they expect my recovery to be. I'm hoping to get it together this summer so I can get back to school before the fiscal year (oct) and won't have to worry about any of this. Re: [QUAD-L] stacy
I meany laying down in bed on his side. That's how I do it now because I can't transfer onto the chair naked. I can't transfer without clothes so am on my own as far as bowel program and bathing goes. I put a pan of water on my sliding board on my lap and wash up. I take it back to the sink the same way. I use blue pads for my bowel program. I lay on my side and when I am finished, I roll the pad up and tuck it the best and cleanest way I can. I then roll another blue pad and tuck that one under the pad I tucked under me. Mind you, I am on my side this whole time. I then roll to the other side carefully without twisting my back too much bc of the rods. I finish rolling up the soiled pad and throw it away and use baby wipes to clean the other side then finishing with rinseless body wash. It can be done. When I was in rehab I was told by my occupational therapist another para did it that way. Like I said earlier that I practiced cleaning myself up while I was in rehab so if I made a mess I could have help cleaning it up. 7 years later, I'm a pro. Dont get me wrong, I do have bad days sometimes. I've had diarrahea and each time I turned, i would go again. I'd have to keep up rolling up blue pads and tucking it under the one I rolled up until I stopped going. When I was on the Zyvox, I went a lot and had to keep up with that and it's a pain but worth it for the independence. When I came home from rehab, I was pretty heavy but still managed. When I used the shower chair, I reached between my legs because I wasnt able to lean to one side. I used a 3 in one chair. I have a tub, not a roll in shower. The bench hangs over the side of the tub, it has a cut out with a bucket. I would go to the bathroom, take out the bucket and then shower. When I was all through, I managed to clean out the bucket. It can be done, it just takes practice. I hope your friend manages in his situation better. I wouldn't want to be in his situation thats for sure. Based on that... let me give you some of my knowledge. Hard stool is always caused by stool remaining in your colon too long as the purpose of the colon is to remove water from the highly liquid stool coming from the small intestine. Almost every quadriplegic that I have known... including myself... has what is called slow transit time... meaning that the stool goes slowly through your colon. This causes more water to be extracted and the result is hard stool. So here are some choices and I would recommend to you: 1. Avoid all laxatives of all kinds because they damage your colon tissue. Chemicals are not good for your body. 2. Eat more fruit... especially apples because their fiber is the best available today for this problem. 3. Locate some dried apricots at the local market and eat about 5-6 of them daily. You've heard of the help of prunes... dried apricots are supercharged prunes. 4. Finally... drink more water as this will help your stool become softer and easier to pass. Finally... if all else fails please go to my website... link below for more information. Re: [QUAD-L] Another anniversary....
Congrats to you and the others celebrating making it thus far. It was memorial weekend for me 7 years ago when I just couldn't get up one morning. I don't remember any of it, just what my roomie told me. I couldnt move, was in pain, rushed to the hospital where I went into respetory arrest and slipped into a coma. 6 days and 3 hospitals later I was diagnosed with encephalomyelitis. After a month in a coma, I awoke on a ventilator and couldnt move even my neck. I thought it was a dream. Months and tons of rehab later, I was able to move my shoulders then arms. I am pretty good with my life and making the most of it, but have a hard time calling it an anniverary. I know we should celebrate the fact we've mad it through but it's not one memory of getting ill, coming out of a coma and full on paralysis to a para, but it seems almost every spring I have something wrong. It was shortly before memorial weekend last year when I broke my back from having osteomyelitis that i didn't know I had until after my back snapped just pulling myself into my chair. I had 3 spinal surgers, have rods from T7 into my pelvis. I can't bend my back and feel like I am moving backwards again. Here I am spring again and need another spinal surgery from a screw that moved through my vertebrae and is rubbing the one above. He is going to put more rods in from at least T4. I am now fearing losing the independence I worked to hard to gain. I know I will be in less pain and have my life but it's so much harder knowing it might happened instead of it just happening. I woke up from the coma paralyzed and with the spinal surgery, I had no idea that I was going to be this bad. I just knew I needed surgery with no warning of how difficult movement was going to be. I've gotten to the point that when spring comes around, I have a hard time celebrating life but wondering what is going to happen this time? Another year of school missed? If i need help, will I be able to get it since it's so hard to get it now? Will I be able to drive my van since the floor doesnt have a cut out big enough for an easy lock and too old to have the work done and be paid for? Not to be a pity on anyones party just some rambling and thoughts. Don't get me wrong, I am grateful for how much I do have and know first hand of how bad it can be. I haven't told anyone my thoughts except for you all. I guess I try to stay so strong for everyone else around me. I finished college at Wayne State Univ. in Detroit in '72 and came out to Arizona in '74 to escape the cold and seek my fortune. I taught high school for a few years and then worked as a programmer for Honeywell for 25 years before they gave my job away to India. Not to rain on your parade but also want to be realistic. I had encephalomyelits 7 years ago. I was paralyzed from the neck down and got movement bad except for T7 down. Months later I could flex the quad muscles in my thigh and have faint sensation. I haven't gotten anymore back since. The cut off they say for recovery is 2 years so don't lose hope and if you can move something, keep moving it. That is what I was told. The therapist said be sure not to fatigue the muscles though. Re: FW: [QUAD-L] neurontin
I've tried morphine and dilatid(sp?). Neither have worked. Not even for my back where the screw has moved its way through the vertebrae. I have also tried oxycodone. I do take 50mg of cymbalta but that was prescribed when I was going through all of the spinal surgeries and got really depressed about it in the hospital. I gave up on all pain meds except for the lyrica. One thing you all in pain might want to ask about is methadone. It does something with the nerve endings to relieve pain. It's much less of mg. for pain. I did take it at one time but when my spasms got really bad, I had to quit it to take diazipam because it lowers your heart rate. I got it through my pain doctor. It did really work and I am considering taking it again because I no longer take the diazipam since my spasms are much better since I got my spinal surgery. It's something I would consider if your pain is that bad. It worked for me and my pain at one time was out of control. Since I have been taking lyrica, its' been much better but since my back is in so much pain I am going to talk to my doc about the methadone again. I think it makes a difference. I'm sorry to hear about your pain. I took a health psychology class and we learned about managing pain and it personally helped me learn how to manage it. There are things you can do to help take your mind off of it. In some ways its kind of like medatation by thinking of other things in a nice quiet setting that relax you. I am in serious pain now from my back. I don't know if you know but I had 3 spinal surgeries last summer b/c i got osteomyelitis in my spinal column. A screw has popped through a vertebrea and has rubbed the one above it to a point that part of that bone is gone as well. I am getting another surgery to get more rods but I have to wait for the doctor to view the ct scan that i sent to set up the surgery. Anyhow I am in extreme pain that medicine is not helping. I personally manage pain pretty well by keeping myself busy. It's hard to fight through but I also have to live. I considered a baclofen pump. WE thought it was a pressure sore making me have so many spasms but it turned out to be the osteomyelitis. Anyhow if the spasms weren't to get any better, I wanted the pump. My pain specialist puts them in and then the spasticity clinic maintains them. My pain doc said that he could put the pain meds in as well instead of having to take them orally. Re: FW: [QUAD-L] neurontin
I am considering it if I dont get relief from this next surgery. I'm just freaking out because more rods. At least 3 more levels. They are already from T7 all the way into my pelvis so now we are talking about T 4. I'm so nervous. I was a quad and got better and now I feel like I am going backwards. It's hard to know you are going to lose it instead of just losing it without knowing. I am so afraid of losing idenpendence. I know a lot of you have caregivers but I honestly cant stand anyone around me for very long every day. They have to come at least for 5 hours because they come from 30 to 40 miles away. They also have a habit of not showing up and that freaks me out. I can't imagine getting stuck either in my bed or in my chair. Anyhow I jumped off subject. I will definatly look into it if I don't get relief but I think I will since I had relief when I first had this fusion. I only hurt if I did too much. Now everything is too much but I still keep getting up because I don't want to have to lay in bed all day and let my life go by on me. I do what I can as carefully as I can for now. Re: FW: [QUAD-L] neurontin
Thanks John, I live in MD. they aren't spending crap on jails here. My brother is in prison and he says its terrible. We have overcrowding and understaffing and they just shut down a prison so those prisoners went to the others in the state. It's a nightmare. I know weed helps but it has a poor effect on me now that I am a bit older. It makes me want to eat and sleep. I live alone so I cant be that lazy and I don't want to gain weight. Plus I can't afford it. Its a good idea though. Stacy - Original Message From: John S. Hi luis, I'm Stacy. I became paraplegic in May of 2001 from a type of encephalitis that put me in a coma and made me a quad. I regained my upper body but from below my chest down is paralyzed. Last year I got osteomyelitis in my spinal column and had to get rods from T 7 down to my pelvis. I have had some complications and going back in for more rods. I'm in no way complaining, just letting you know a bit about me. I live in Maryland on the coast and will have my 34th bday in July. I live alone and drive a van that has hand controls and a captains chair that turns around so I can transfer into it. I am a mommy of a beautiful cat. Welcome to the list. Re: [QUAD-L] wheelchair monologue
They guy is whiny. I couldn't stand to listen to him. Most of us try to blend in instead of wanting someone to feel sorry for us. I go grocery shopping by myself all of the time. I put my transfer board on my lap and put a basket over that. If I need to buy something that is too big to fit, I ask someone up front to get it for me when I am ready to pay. I go to the same store most of the time and they are very helpful. I've gotten to know a few of the people there and they often ask me if I need anything. People often ask me if i need help when they are walking by and see my ramp open while I am transfering into my chair. I just tell them I got myself here and I am fine but thank you so much for asking. Many times we get into a discussion of some sort which I enjoy. I just blend in. I smile, make eye contact, joke about myself, etc. No reason for me to try to explain to people how life is like that guy did in the monolouge. If they make judgements because of my chair then I have no time for them. When I go to concert my friend drops me off and has to park, which takes a long time. When I went to the Bon Jovi concert last week, one of the doorkeepers saw me almost at the end of the long line outdoors and came and got me and let me in and then another person took me to my wheelchair seating. It's unfortunate that grocery stores don't have someone to help you like department stores usually do. It seems as though they are cutting back on staff and it's harder now to sometimes even find salespeople in any store, but usually I do. Persons are usually willing to help if you ask. You have to search for a salesperson. Elevators are especially difficult, I just have to wait till somebody is walking by to ask for help to push the buttons. I agree with everything that you said Joan. Everyone wants to see my yorkie, which makes a good opportunity to ask for help. On another note, my yorkie , Zoe just ran out the front door to the end of the block to a busy intersection and four cars had to slam on their brakes. My aid could have been bringing back a dead dog. She is really bad about running out the front door and it doesn't matter what you say she will not stop. She used to just go to the street and now she goes to the intersection. . Need a new ride? Re: [QUAD-L] Bed...
I have a generic hospital bed as well. I have an alternating pressure pad on my bed. I expect the medical equipment place to come get the pump at any time since medicare wont pay for it unless you have breakdown and mine was closed up a year ago. I have seen them online for between 25 to as much as 50 bucks. I had my own that medicaid paid for before that but it broke. Anyhow I haven't gotten a sore from the bed but from the cushion on my chair so the pump worked good. I even have slept on the same side for as much as a week straight. I have a hospital sheet on my bed that ended up at home with me from the ride home. I use liquid fabric softner on it. I usually wash the sheet and put it back on the bed because I really hate folding sheets. I alternate sheets if I know I wont get back to making the bed. Well the point is, fabric softner makes a world of difference. Re: [QUAD-L] Medical Help
When I was first paralyzed and came home, I didnt know what was what and not one to run to the hospital. I was not driving and had to have two days notice to get transportation and not able to get into friends cars. I wasn't about to pay for an ambulance unless I was sure it was a problem. I know that there are things that I questioned only to find out its a normal thing. I was freaked out about swelling to find that it's normal. My pain and spasms gradually got worse only to find out that pain and spasms are normal. I did go to the doctor about those things but it is nice to know to throw the questions out there to see how 'normal' they are according to paralysis. Stacy - Original Message From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: quad-list@eskimo.com Sent: Friday, April 18, 2008 2:41:06 PM Subject: [QUAD-L] Medical Help It really amazes me at the number of people who write to this list asking for medical advice or if they should go to the doctor to get something checked out. As helpful as everyone on this list tries to be, I don't think anyone here can offer real medical advice to someone without knowing their medical history or the severity of the medical issue in question. Maybe it's just me, but if ANYTHING is out of the ordinary for me, I call the doctor's office and schedule an appointment, unless of course, I need to go to emergency. I would think that after most of what us quads have been through, we should not hesitate to get medical attention. It could mean the difference between life and death. If it isn't anything that severe, at least we've had it checked out and know what's going on. At least that's my two cents worth. Re: [QUAD-L] 20th anniversary
Thanks Paul. That is kind. I wish everyone were that way. So many with minor problems find a way to complain about so much such as my own mother who had to get two toes amputated about a month ago. She's in rehab now and is constantly complaining to me. I just want to shake her. She acts so worried about me but then acts like her problems are so much bigger than mine. I sympathize but at least she can walk even if it's not well. I have it so much better than so many of you on the list and I respect what you all go through in a day. I was a quad wish absolutely no movement for a short time and now paraplegic so I know how bad it can be and thank God everyday that I am not. When I first became sick I just didnt get up one day and woke up about a month later from a coma. I realize that if I didnt have a roommate to call 911,I would be dead and am so grateful that I wake up every day. Its sad that it took so much for me to appreciate my life even if it is pretty bad at times. When it's bad, its bad and I dont even bother complaining to anyone about it. I put on a face when I'm not doing well because I don't want to bring down people around me and don't want them to feel bad for me. I'm coming up on my 7th memorial weekend. It seems almost every spring it has been something with me. I had bladder surgery that didnt work, pressure sore surgery twice on the same one and both in the spring, last year infection in my spinal column which required major amounts of rods and this spring a screw has broken through the vertebrae and is rubbing the one above it. Another surgery! I keep going and take it day by day. People keep telling me how strong I am and they dont know if they could do it. I just tell them that if they had to, they would. It the typical fight or flight. Deal with it and move on or curl up in a corner and live the rest of your life in a nursing home which isnt an option for me. I'm not knocking those in a nursing home b/c I realize there is no choice for some but I was lucky in finding a way to do it on my own so I did and will fight to keep my independence. Now I'm trying to write one about my 13th, even though I am about a week and a half late. It seems that I copied a message from someone on this list to give me inspiration for this year's blog. I found it to be one of the best entries I had read regarding quad milestones and I am seriously considering using it as a format for my blog. I, however, would like to find out who it is, because for some reason I didn't copy down the name. The anniversary date of the person's accident was April 1, 1988. Is that person still on the list or does anyone have an idea who this might be. Below is a small excerpt of what I copied. Finding things in life I like or dislike, in other words its like being reborn all over again, minus learning to walk. Over these years I have been asked How do you do it? or I'm not sure what I would do if that happened to me. How do I do it? Easy, I live each day as it comes, take what is given to me and accept it for what it is. As to the other question, you either choose to live life to the fullest or wither up, the latter for me is not an option. I also have some pretty cool disabled friends that keep me focused along the way. Thanks, Quadius __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Re: [QUAD-L] America's Defecit and Also the IRAQ war cost.
I pretty much don't agree with anything this administration is doing. Our country has had it's back turned on since we went to war. Our own people are hurting in a big way and our problems can't be resolved. Whomever becomes president has a big job on their hands and I know I wouldn't want that job for the world. We need to keep our noses out of other countries and focus on this one. I agree with you about the payments. I didn't agree with when he gave out checks his first year as president and the tax cuts dont need to be going to the wealthy. Bush said it will basically trickle down but doesn't realize that a majority of the wealthy invest their extra money for their own benefit. If it wants tax cuts to go back into the economy then it needs to be given to people that are middle class because they are the ones that need the money and will most likely spend it and put it back into the economy. I have a huge concern about our future. I'd love to be able to know that I will be secure in the future but I just don't know if it will happen. Re: [QUAD-L] Another Ladies only question ! (Menopause and S.C.I.)
Hi, It was six months before I got my period after I was paralyzed from encephalomyelitis. I was told that your body goes into some sort of shock and I was also on a good amount of steriods. They also made my hair fall out. After that I had weak periods for quite a long time and now I get a really bad one every few months. The doctors put me on antideppresants when I began recovering from a coma so it was easier to deal with my recovery. I quit the antideppresants after a couple of years and was fine until I hurt my back again from osteomyelitis. I had a few spinal surgeries and my period quit again for a few months. That kinda scared me but they said it would not hurt me. Then the same nurse was told to draw 2 large vials of blood for tests and 2 small vials--- well half thru she said oh my gosh hand on don't move... I forgot all the vials, and ran from the room,, then returned with more vials saying I'm so sorry all this is happening because i'm a very competent nurse. ( Me and my wife were getting scared and was not sure she was competent ! ) lol Then later the next shift nurse put in an IV for antibiotics and it blew my vein that night causing my arm to swell up very large and could not get a vein to work in my other arm after 3 or 4 tries. So then they let me just stay overnight, without any fluids or antibiotics and said they were giving me a PICC LINE the next day. Well they gave me a zanex to make me relaxed and the Lady came in and put the picc line in so easily with NO PROBLEMS ! I did'nt even feel a thing ! Thanks!!! to all who gave me advice about the PICC line--- A home care nurse came today and taught my wife how to give the antibiotics- flush and Etc. and we just finished our 1st home treatment.man it is so nice this way and probably safer than in the hospital with careless nurses. -- Thanks Again all ! now I will not be so scared of a picc line in the future. That however, I was able to get someone down here to fix it and Medicare paid for it. I think a lot has to do with the companies you deal with. I've called Medicare about a couple of things. Re: [QUAD-L] getting a service dog.
I am paraplegic as far as feeling goes but since I had all of the rods put in my back, I can't bend my back from T4 down and going for another sugery. I dont doubt I can care for a dog, it is just that as far as my back goes, I can really benefit from a dog. I didnt consider it before I got the infection in my spinal column because I had function from T7 but now things are a lot more difficult as far as flexibility. I still have full function of my arms and hands though. I know when I first got my dog I couldn't put on her vest, leash, feed/water her, or really walk her (my home is surrounded by grass and at the time all I had was a manual chair). But I've learned ways of doing things so that I can be autonomous with my pup. Taking care of the dog is part of the bonding process as well. Dana Stacy I trained my own service, but I recommend getting one that is professionally trained at least for your first dog. Training a dog is not easy esspecially for a mid-high quad. You need to be able to care for all of the dogs needs (i.e. feed, walk, put on and take off harness and gear, and groom and bathe or take somewhere to get done). To me, if you can't be independent with the dog, then there's really no point in getting one. The only thing I get tired of doing sometimes is going to bed late and waking up early for walks. Re: [QUAD-L] A friend in need.
What a sad story about this gentleman. I don't know his situation but can sympathize as to what its like to get worse after getting hurt. Memorial weekend will be 7 years for me. I was paralyzed from the neck down after waking up from a coma, got better to t7/8 then last year got osteomyelitis in my spinal column and had to get several disks replaced with metal and now have rods, screws and something called cages replacing the vertabreas from t4 and screwed into my pelvis. A screw has since popped through a vertabrae and have to get another surgery getting more rods. I can barely bend my back as it is and am very frightful about what I am in store for after my next surgery. I will most likely have to get more rods and then will be from t1 down. I fought a serious pressure sore for a few years and had 4 surgeries on that. I'm healed but still have pain in the area. Some bone had to be removed in order for it to heal. Even though I've had a lot of medical issues and have only a good few years of living paralyzed, I still know I have a life to live and giving up would lead to a miserable life. Your friend will end up in a nursing home if he gives up and that is no way to live. I try to use my situation to the best of my ability. I know there is so much I cant do but have to use what I can. I will pray for your friend. I have so much going on with my mom and her health right now. She also wants to give up and it breaks my heart. Please tell him he is in my prayers and I hope that he can recover from this depression. WHen I have more time, I'd like to send him a letter or give him a call. Sometimes it just helps to talk to someone. Is he on a ventilator? Is if fairly easy for him to talk on the phone considering his level is pretty high? I got a call from my visiting nurse, Chris ( Dave's care givers ) last Wednesday and she asked if I would call a guy who broke his neck a few years ago and is currently in a funk thinking he's had about enough of this quad 'crap'. I called him and went to visit as he lives about 2 miles from me. He is 63 and broke his back on a trampoline 14 years ago and then fell out of bed 4 years ago and broke his neck at C1. He is in pretty bad shape with only a little movement in his arms and none in fingers or anywhere else. He has been plagues with UTIs and bed sores and can't seem to stay out of the hospital for vary long. I chatted with him for about an hour and he told me he doesn't have a computer since he can't operate one. He asked if I would mention him to you guys and that maybe someone in similar circumstances could give him a call and compare notes with him a bit. I know some of you could give him some good news about computer accessibility since I don't know much about voice operated computing. I have a laptop I could loan him to get his feet wet if any of you could spark an interest. He says he's done with doctors, hospitals, and pills - and we all know where that will lead very quickly. Re: [QUAD-L] Gays
I love gay people. I have always been around them since I was a kid. My babysitter when I was a kid is gay. Since I have been exposed to many different types of people my whole life it has taught me not to judge anyone for color, religion, sexual preference, etc. We are all God's children regardless of the above things. I know that there are people that may not like me for whatever reason and I don't like to bejudged so why would I judge others. You aren't a bad person but a good person for not being bothered by what a person prefers in a partner. I got my tattoo years ago with one of my best friends who is gay. He also stepped up and really helped me through the tough time of my life when I first became paralyzed. He stepped up when other friends abandoned me. We don't really keep in touch now that he has moved away but every time I look at my ankle, I think of him and will always have the memory of that great day together. I use almay eyeshadow from brown eyes. It had purple and brown showdow in it that is supposed to bring out brown eyes. I often get complimented on my makeup. I use black/brown covergirl mascara that has that new kind of brush that I really like. It keeps the lashes separted well. I really like them. My eyeliner is from Clinique, a purple shades that is not bright at all. For foundation powder I just used the cover girl powder foundation if I'm not using the minimal powder makeup. Right now I have under a cover-up by Revlon but I'm going to get some from Lancome that I ran out of that is the best I have found. I use all over pink powder by company just to give the glow and regular lose powder besides blush by Clinique for L'Oreal. I try all kinds of lipsticks that will stay on longer because I drink a lot of liquids. I guess my favorite is raspberry glosse by Clinique and then another wand gloss on top by different cosmetic companies. My skin is fair so I wear more ivory colored makeup and raspberry colored lipsticks. It seems the darker shades get on your teeth and are not as easy to have someone put on you as you often look like Betty Davis. Ha ha. I really think it helps to use the oil of Olay moisturizer and eye cream and now I have tried the one that the girl from Sex and the City advertises, I can't think of the name of it, it is cheaper than oil of Olay. I know you are probably a lot younger than me so you may not worry so much about the moisturizer but I know they are good for your skin no matter what the age. My mom has always used lotion on her face and she doesn't have many wrinkles at 73 which is amazing. She taught me that since I was a little girl and to always rub it completely all over your neck, because you age on your neck first. It also helps not to go out into the sun unless you are wearing sunscreen. Some of the lotions do contain sunscreen . There is a Oil of Olay that I often use that does. I often want more sunscreen and the lotion contains. I often look for a sunscreen that is the high number that is not oily at all in use with my moisturizer. There is one moisturizer with sunscreen that has color with it that you can wear if you don't want to wear makeup. Most of you already know this, but just thought I would mention. [QUAD-L] my mom
Hey all. I am having problems and serious concerns. My mom recently got two of her toes amputated due to bad circulation She isn't walking well on top of that due to the circulation. I am the only kid that is tepping up to the plate with her. My younger brother is in prison so has no way to help and my older brother isn't even calling us after several attempst to call him. Every morning I get a call from her all upset about something. I am working on getting her medical assistance and hoping I can get help with her rent since she doesn't have an income and hopefully she will be able to draw disability. On top of the toes she has an ulcer on the inside of her leg. I talked to the doctor telling him that I cant physically help her and now he is getting her to rehab. She is freaking out bc it is a nursing home/rehab. I am at a loss of what to do. She has car payments, phone, electric, etc. We have talked about letting the car go but she lives out in the middle of nowhere and she can't stop onto my van. I'm doing everything I can tp keep her from living with me again. I can't take her negativity and if you all remember, she chased away a guy that I was dating. On top of it all I will need to get spinal curgery again soon and scared to death of what will happen to my mom in the coming years when she wont be able to care for herself at all. I did get my name back on the list for substuting with the board of edication a few weeks ago so I can help pay her bills but havent been called at all. I need to help my mom, but finding it so hard. I'm curious to know how you all have handled or handling the aging of parents when you can't physically take care of them.. I always knew I would be the one to care for my parents when they got older but now that I have problems, I know I wont be able to do it and it breaks my heart to think my mom will eventually end up on a home since my brother wont even call to see how she is doing. It is so exhausting dealing with my mom now. She is a terrible patientand is getting great care but she doesn't think so. Like i said before, she calls me first thing in the morning every day crying about something and doesnt seem to calm down unless I am there. the day she has surgery, she had her heart rate well over a hundred and refuses anxiety medicine. She didnt calm down until her friend that was visiting and I went to see her. Her friend was on her way home so I was at the hospital all day into the night to keep her calm. Re: [QUAD-L] Spinal surgeries
I can't remember exactly what I wrote so please forgive me if I repeat myself. After the 3 surgeries on my spine, the end result is rods from T4 and screwed into my pelvis. Since the screw has popped through the vertebrae and hitting the vertebrae above it, the neurosurgeon wants to go up at least 3 more levels. H didn't see any reason for me to do it right away and said he wanted to see me in about 8 weeks. I did have damage to my vocal cords when I was on the vent 6 yrs ago and had to have another surgery to repair them. My voice still isn't the same and stays weak for a while after coming off of the vent. I'm scared of that, the fact we are getting into where I have full sensation vs. the last surgery was mostly where I didn't have full sensation. I have a hard enough time with my wheelchair now because of my back not bending. My chair tips backwards going up ramps and forget about curbcuts. I am having a hard time getting rid of some weight now with eating right as it is and I will probably need a powerchair so I guess you could say that if I'm awake, I'm thinking about this. The only way I can get to the neurosurgeons down here for a second opinion (the ones that I want which are in the same office) is with a referral from my rehab doc. I finally went to that appt today and will likely have to wait about a month before I can see the surgeon and then I see my neurosurgeon in hopkins in the mid of April. That's only a fraction of my concerns. I have been in a lot more pain the last few days and I wasn't sure if it was because I did more weight on the ricshaw or chest presses. My back was kept stable and dont use those muscles in the exercises I do so I couldn't figure out what did it. My therapist felt the muscles and they were really tight so that explains a lot of the pain but I am still worried I did something else to trigger it. I may end up going to the hospital before I get an appt with anyone so if I dissapear, I am likely back the hospital to start the whole process all over again with rehab and all of that fun stuff. Hopefully not another summer missed though. I seem to have rambled in this email as well. Re: [QUAD-L] high cholesterol
My cholesterol is 155. I can't remember the number of my good cholesterol but it is low. My doctor said its from not being able to exercise like I used to. My neighbor had some pretty high cholesterol and got it down without drugs. He was really careful with what he ate. It was a few months before he got bloodwork done again but it was way down. I don't know your situation and I fear it formyself as my brother is only 5 years older than me and is going down the path of high cholesterol that runs in my family. Good luck with everything. Re: [QUAD-L] free list
The point of my post was that topic was becoming mundane to use your words. I totally agree that there are many more things to discuss aside from paralysis, but sometimes topics get beat to death. After days and so many posts saying the same things, sometimes it turns into an arguement and some hateful things are said. I understand there is a delte key, however I don't always check my email every day. When I get busy, it can be almost a week or more and I don't have the time or patience at that point to go through all of the emails so I delete all of them at once only to find I missed an important post after the fact. Then if I want to know what it said, I have to go to the archives. My whole point is that we are here to support eachother, not beat eachother down. It's like people seem to think those who yell the loudest is right sometimes. How about we express ourselves and response to what someone else said is fine (to me), but I get frustrated to see the same thing said over and over again and like I said before, hurtful things can be said. Again, we are here to support eachother. I don't expect everyone to reply to my posts, but it gets aggrivating to see posts like that get so much more attn than real life issues that we have to deal with. People should have kind words to offer even if they can't help over hurtful words about topics like the one about the poor woman who passed away. Sorry for my rambling, but my opinion stands about how I feel about the list. Someone told me that he has seen many leave over chat like that and I know of at least one myself that contributed quite a lot to the list sometime ago. Cant we all just get along? Re: [QUAD-L] free list
Yes I realize it's a free list and so Sorry to charge another debate, but I do find issue with a list that is more willing to respond and say hurtfull or hateful things then to respond to those that are here for what the list was made for. I constantly have seen people post things looking for help or support about things that have happened to them or if they are looking for a new chair. that includes myself. I posted about needing another surgery which is pretty serious. Even Andrea posted about firemen putting her to bed when nursing wouldn't come out to do it. There were about 3 responses to mine, a few to Andrea's and tons talking and debating over the poor woman that passed away. I think if someone is gonna get angry about something, it should be about the nurses that wouldn't come out to help them. It's a helth issue for someone to stay in their chair all night. What if their catheter bags get full then back up into their kidneys, not to mention pressure sores from sitting in the chair all night especially if they are wet. Who knows what else they may have needed if no one came out to help them. If we want to get so emotionally charged over something then it should be that. They are still living and couldn't nursing to come out. That poor woman is gone and anything we say isn't going to change anything. Maybe 911 should ask disabled people what the circumstances are to why they need help then decide if they will come out. If it's something they caused, then we'll make you wait or not come at all because you deserve it. We'll just save help for those that didn't cause it because they are the one's who deserve it. Is that right? The woman should be resting in peace. I know she's in a better place but she didn't deserve to go that way. Aren't we here to support eachother? [QUAD-L] time to let it rest
Sorry to say this all but I think this conversation is getting out of hand. People are reacting very strongly and with emotions. She has passed away and whether or not it's her fault for starting the fire or she was put on hold, I personally think it's time to just let this be. I don't post often, but I do appreciate the list and everyone in it, however, sometimes I just delete the whole mailbox because most of it is related to things like this and I sometimes dont have the time or patience to go through it. I could be saying this because I am having a rough go of it these days and like to read posts that help me learn of things that are paralysis related. I do appreciate other posts such as our discussions about dogs, vans, wheelchairs or cute stories like Andrea being put to bed by some firefighters. I even like to read about people's opinions about politics and even this story, but sometimes it gets so emotionally charged that it almost crosses the line. Like I said, I might be saying this because I am having a rough go of it and maybe I don't have a place to say anything since I don't post as I should but at the same time, this topic is beat. [QUAD-L] maybe another spinal surgery
Hey all, I had posted a while back that I have been feeling some grinding in my back and it had been hurting (I had rods put in from T7 down into my pelvis). My neurosurgeon in Baltimore was out of town at the time so I went to my pain specialist here locally that used to practice neurosurgery in Baltimore. I had x rays done and he seemed to think that a rod might have been moving where they had to remove a screw. I went to my neurosurgeon a couple of weeks ago and had another ct scan done. It happens that a screw popped through the vertebrae and is grining against the one above it. He said that its not real important to consider surgery now but if I go through with it, he is going to put more rods in. He's now talking from T4 now so I wont be able to bend my back pretty much at all. It's freaking me out because My level is T7 so I didn't have full sensation therefore pain from my last surgery and now I am having enough problems with my push wheelchair because of not being able to bend my back. I tip backwards going up ramps and curb cuts. I use the sides of my ramp to pull myself and go up curb cuts backwards. I really dont want to go to a power chair, although I know the better part of you use one, but I am freaked out about gaining weight and not being able to do excercises because I can barely keep my balance as is. I know that you all deal with this daily. Any ideas, tips, helplful words? All input is welcome. I am really considering going through with this surgery soon, considering what my second opinion says. The pain is pretty bad and the grinding feeling isn't very pleasant. I am finally healed from my sore, driving and some independence again. I was going to get back on the sub lists for teaching since I'm sooo broke and now I have to deal with these problems again. Anyone else suffering from another obstacle after getting over a previous one? I really feel like I am going backwards. I have been very blessed, dont get me wrong. I once was a quad, but starting to feel like I am going backwards after all I have been through. I am feeling really down here lately and would love some sort of words of encouragement. Sorry for the rambling. I've been holding it in the last few months. I feel like I am a burden when complaining, but I've had enough of this s...t. Stacy Looking for last minute shopping deals? I had to get pulled out of the tub a few years ago. At one time, I could get myself into the shower. I had really bad spasms that threw me in, my legs were bent and wedged in the tub, I spent the night because I forgot my phone to take with me. Long story short, my friend called them in the morning and they bailed me out. They asked my friend to cover me so I had my privacy. It's nice when they go above and beyond and are really great about it. Your story is much better than mine hehe. I'm sure you all had a good time while they did it. What a way to weather the storm. Are are a meanie. lol. I think saying someone deserves to die is pretty harsh thing to say, no matter what the circumstance. There is a girl here that became quadraplegic because she was playing chicken in summer traffic at the beach. She isn't the friendliest person and seems that she is pretty miserable. I've said some some things about how she acted when I had the chance to meet her while sharing a bus ride, but I also didn't know her whole situation. This young girl was still in high school and both of her parents had been dead. She is a quad, on a vent and living with a grandmother because of what she did, but does she deserve it, I don't know. It's not my opinion that matters, but no matter what, she will be in a bad way her whole life because of what she's done. Also many agencies have aids come with Medicare and don't require you to be homebound or the aid just doesn't say anything about you not being homebound. I had a nurse come to do bandage changes and she said as long as I was here when she was here then she doesn't know anything. Re: [QUAD-L] Enemeez- For Personal Bowel Programs
I checked out the site and they aren't very affordable at all. How do those of you who use them pay for them? [QUAD-L] spinal fusion
For those of you who dont know, I had to have my spine fused in several places last May. Well it really began hurting last week like something was rubbing. After the fusion was done, I had to have a screw removed b/c it was too close to my aeorta so I worried something was shifting and went to my doctor. My neurosurgeon is out of town so I went to my pain doc bc he used to be a neurosurgeon at the University of MD. We had xrays done and he doesnt see anything that would require me to have surgery, but I am in unbelievable pain to the point I can barely move and its in more than one spot. Has anyone else had any experience with the rods rubbing a bit or a screw? I am hoping after taking it easy for awhile the pain will go down but it has been getting a little bit worse every day and today it's about the same. It doesnt hurt as much if I am laying down on my side without moving too suddenly but it does hurt more to sit up and hurts a lot to adjust myself while laying down the first time for the day. I've been staying in bed a lot hoping I can get the pain down as pain meds arent helping very much. If anyone has any ideas on how to try to get the pain withstandable, I would apppreciate it. I have 3 cages and rods from top of tspine. One cage replaces T 4,5,6,7 and maybe 8; another replaces T 11,12; and another replaces L 4,5, and maybe 6. There is about 7 or 8 discs missing in all. In the lumbar section there are a couple of sets of rods with rods next to rods. Lots of metal!!! I tried to put a pic in but it couldnt be delivered. Anyone else have this much metal?
