RE: WE Saying Invalid Copy

2017-04-05 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Lary et All:
I called Dave at support.
We went into help > Licensing and deactivated my license then ReActivated it
and that fixed the problem - thanks Lary you were on the right track indeed.
If you are going to do this ensure you have at least 1 ReActivation left or
you may have problems if you deactivate with 0 left.
Dave had me use the online activation and deactivation and he said there may
have been some problems in their database associated with the recent sever
outage.

An important correction!

Look for the validation offline instead. That should work for you.

Sorry, should have caught that error.

rick,

Try going to your license management dialog box in the WE help menu. You
should find an option to revalidate online. Give that a try. It may kick up
and tell you that you have to contact AI Squared, but keep looking for the
option to validate.

This just happened to me a few minutes ago, and has happened before, about a
year ago, and luckily, I ran across that set of options while desperately
looking for help at that time.

Really hope this helps,

RE: Failure to hold VFO to account

2017-03-17 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
I agree.
Our Country is nuts brainwashed when it comes to Capitalism, doesn't really
practice it, but uses the concepts to route ever larger amounts of money
and assets to the top 1 percent at the cost of the other 99 percent of us.
The Middle class is dying, will die at an even faster pace going forward,
and those like the sick and disabled are being left for dead in our modern
U.S. economic system.
There are changes brewing and I wonder how long before it erupts into civil
violence and disobedience.
The disabled community talks and communicates via the computer but until,
unless, boots on the ground do something to hit the mainstream media nothing
will get better while the Middle Class is losing jobs, income power and
civil rights which will be the main theme of any civil actions that are
media worthy.
I don't want to get political but everything is indeed political in the end
so I will drop it here and just let things play out doing my own thing to
try and facillitate change.

I happen to think, on a humanitarian rather than on a political level, that
some goods and services, defined as essential, should be shielded from
market forces. I would include health care (I'm British), and access
technology.
In this category, people like clinicians and the developers of technology
should be paid well for their expertise, but the price should not be armped
up by supply and demand, scarcity value, ETC. The prospect of somene else's
profit margin, over and above proper salaries, preventing someone with
cancer from receiving treatment, or a blind person being able to have the
means of cummunicating in a digital world, is obscene. And "That's just the
way it is" is defeatist talk in my opinion.

2017-03-17 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk

Hi: My concern is going forward and how the screen readers will work with
the new 2017 windows version The Creators.
It has allot of new features like virtual reality and other things of a
visual nature according to one fellow I talked to recently.
Will JAWS and, or, WindowEyes be able to handle the new windows platform
without major changes?
With the back-out of staff from the WindowEyes project this could be a real
problem if the new windows is a major upgrade for them.

I feel that the key point as this relates to Window-eyes is missed: if you
don't pay - you can presume to not get. The Window-Eyes for Office deal has
meant that there is no cash to fix long standing problems or to develop new
features.

People who make a business choice to develop tools which make our lives
better do also have to live. Although I will always remain unhappy with
current developments, the software engineers who continue to develop screen
readers are tradable - they can sell their skills to someone else.

I do believe that the virtual monopoly on screen readers especially for
those who are employed is a bad thng. But - it is what we have, and it
might be that there is now a huge barrier which prevents others from
offering choice to consumers.
Tough as it is: we have to make spending choices, and certainly, if
financial assistance is there - take it. But: someone produces and sells,
someone else buys and consumes.

Vaughan.

Tony, I could not agree more! It seems to me that blind folks are pretty
happy being ripped off. Petitions fall on deaf ears, elements of deceitful
dishonesty beat down like hurricanes and tornados, and stun guns are always
at the ready to fire and knock the blind out!

If the goings-on had happened in the mainstream, antitrust law would have
been cited and everything would have gone under quietly. With impunity and
flagrant disregard, the blind continue to borrow the phrase from Animal
Farm: "Four legs good, two legs bad!" Milk on Freedom Scientific, V F O
Group, AI Square, ... Did I miss any?

Hmm, anyone knows what's holding the U.S. Treasury back from complying with
the court order by making the dollar bill more accessible? The junk
noteteller they choose to hand me is utterly worthless and useless
especially in a business environment where I have more prying eyes watching.

Sincerely,

RE: Alternative Interface?

2017-01-17 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi olusegun:
I hope you recognize mylittle posting for what it was - just a bit of
sarcastic fiction to make a point.
I have posted for years about the slow drip, drip, drip of the loss of
aggressive impact on government policies and enforcement by the disabled
community at large.
There are allot of excuses, er let me rephrase that, reasons why this has
happened but as you know my base philosophy...
Your fault, My fault, nobodys fault - just get the job done.
The job for the disabled community, the blind community in particular, is to
maintain pressure on government to improve accessibility of new technologies
and living conditions where possible -
Not just where it makes a fatter bottom line to the Capitalist Corporations
or allows some beurocrat a longer lunch break.
I know this why?
Well, like you I have had to try and make a buck, actually been a government
beurocrat, worked for several companies and even been self-employed at one
point.
but then I do also have the visibility of being blind and so recognize the
problem from both sides of the equation and thus know the potential
solution(s) which nobody seems willing to buy as it were because it takes
effort and might be hard, require some money, and not just once but over
and over again and again over years and years of vigilance not to mention
leadership with organizational skills and the balls to get the job done (see
above).
Have a good year for yourself and your family.
As always, good hunting olusegun!

RE: Alternative Interface?

2017-01-16 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Dave:
Amps and effects peddles are indeed a problem for blind people but then so
are washing machines, stoves and just about everything flat panel or touch
screen these days unless regulated by government or where some type of audio
I/O helps sighted folks.
There are usually some not too expensive work-arounds that can be
implemented by the companies but why should they if it doesn't increase
their bottom line - I wouldn't and don't.
I don't care if you or any other blind person can use my products, you are
too small, lower income a group to be of concern to me compared to the
massive sighted community market.
Sure, I feel sorry for you but it is your job to get government to setup and
enforce regulations on all of us vendors or I will not provide one minute of
work twoard accessibility if my competition doesn't have to do it.
You can find a sighted person to help you setup and adjust your equipment
during gigs or find a third party company who will help develop some
hardware to make the equipment you want to use accessible - that is what
charaties are for and why they don't have to pay taxes.
Perhaps you can go to some church and beg for help.
God Bless and, truly, good luck:
A Good Capitalist Man

page in IE I'm at the top of the page? As it's set up now, I have to tab a
few times to get to it. There are a few things that are displayed like a
refresh button, a security button and favorites bar.
Anyway to get rid of all that?

Thanks

Lee

RE: Paypal Problems

Hi Rod:
I figured it out.
Back in 2008 I had set a Paypal account up for handling payments on a
website I built and forgot.
I did bring the project over to my new computer so the password info was

Hi Rick,

I use my PayPal account with Window-Eyes regularly, but it's been a while
since I set up my account.
The only thig which occurs to me is that you have to be certain that each
piece of information they're requesting is in the correct field.
You may have better results using Firefox, which is what I use as my default
browser.
Firefox also has the advantage of solving capchas, should you need to do so.

RE: Finding all Duplicates II

2016-12-06 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Simple really:
Depending on the object holding the list you could write a little program to
read the list one line at a time, one number at a time.
Then look in a new list to see if the number is already there. If so skip
adding it again.
If not add it to the new list.
The technicals depends on what object holds the current list and what tools
you have available to you to do this.
There are even simpler methods if you have the tools but I have no clue what
you have nor what you are familiar with.

Subject: Finding all Duplicates II

Good Morning,

Thanks for the several suggestions.

Here's a bit more on what I am doing:

The Company's Voice Mail has been acting up for a couple of months now.
Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. And lately, it hasn't.

So when customers call in, if all Customer Service people are busy, the
caller should go to voice mail. Well, they don't. they just go away.

The phone system does record all numbers calling in, so there is a list
of phone numbers. But we have no way of knowing the name of the
customer calling, just their number. And some people call every day, or
multiple times per day. So in the record there are going to be duplicates.

--
And the crazy thing is that there is no way that anyone knows, as how to get
this list of numbers out of the Phone Systems records.

Now, I am sure there is a file some where on the systems storage, but those
who know something about the phone system have no idea where that file would
be, or what it would be called.

So, the Boss has someone reading me these phone numbers out of the phone
system. I then have been typing them out in a Document, as in a long list.

Just by hearing the numbers, I can tell when I hear a duplicate number, but
this is not fool proof.

So I have these phone numbers, in a Word File. Hundreds of phone numbers,
and I am to remove the duplicates, because the Boss intends for Customer
Service to call all of these numbers back.

The Company already looks like idiots since customers are not getting called
back, and then to have the poor souls in Customer Service call a customer
twice, three times or more, isn't going to look great either.

So, I and another have been tasked with getting all of these numbers into a
file, to be given to customer service, and with no duplicates.

Welcome to the Real World when it comes to problem solving.

Butch's Sorting in DOS sounds like a possible solution. I can save my
document as a Text file. I'll give this a try.

Since I have hundreds of numbers to weed through, I was trying to use the
power of the computer to strip out the duplicates, rather than having me and
this other person go through them one at a time and hoping to remove all
duplicates.

So thought I would ask the list here, since we have some smart folks here.

Grumpy Dave

RE: E-Mail Outlook Body Not Reading

2016-11-28 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Rod:
That worked but it did not solve the problem I am having.
I get e-mails, sometimes, where I know there is text in the body but nothing
is read.
This happens in Outlook 2015 and has happened to other folks on the blind
programming list from time to time as well.
They use JAWS and NVDA I think so it appears to be something to do with the
formatting or the character set or something like that.
So far it only happens on the blind programming list so it is not a major
problem. I just thought that trying to flip the viewing type from text to
web based might help - it didn't.
One fellow will open the messages in an Apple machine, I think that was his
resolution if I remember, and that worked so he concluded it is a Windows or
Outlook problem - he may be correct.
Anyway thanks for the help.
By the way, have you considered which screen reader you will move to,
eventually, when WindowEyes becomes outdated?
Some claim NVDA is good while others say JAWS is best for computer
programmers but I have very little experience with either yet.
Just getting some color from folks who do more than just a little text and
browser work.

WE and standard windows dotNet DataGridView

2016-11-23 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi:
I am trying to figure out the best way to display a grid object to folks
using WindowEyes.
In dotNet, windows, the standard object is the DataGridView.
You can have the column headings along the top and all the values in
individual cells in a standard array configuration.
It works much like an Excel spreadsheet.
In the past WindowEyes has struggled with many of these types of controls
but that was a few years ago.
Has Windoweyes managed to get the point where it works well with the
DataGridControl or is there another type of layout that is used by you folks
to display a grid of data and have some way to easily read across a row, up
and down a column and speak the column title using a hot key and, or, other
features?
I am guessing you may have either used such matrix representations or even,
you scriptors, created them and, if anyone has done any programming, perhaps
worked with something akin to the visual studio, standard windows,
DataGridView control.
I heard that this control works well with another popular screen reader but
I remember many problems with it under WindowEyes back a few years ago.
Anyway, I am looking for color before spending allot of time building what
will be a pretty complicated math UI involving some linear algebra and would
like to stick with WindowEyes if there is a simple object I can use to
display the matrix and its values and headings.

Math e-books or the Web

2016-11-20 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi:
I am playing with some advanced math.
Most web tutorials and, from what I have read, e-books are not accessible
with the symbols and perhaps greeks and even matrix representations.
I read that mathML and LaTex are suppose to work around this and that they
are suppose to work but I don't know anything about them.
Do any of you have experience with advanced technicals and WindowEyes using
these or other means of reading and, or, working with advanced math either
in e-book form or on the web?
I am currently playing with linear algebra if that helps.

RE: Spell Check A Outlook 2016 message

Hi Chris: How do you turn spell as you go on.
When I run, alt+Apostrophe WE tells me there are no mispelled words even

I have googled and tried various settings in Outlook to no effect.
I cant find anything on spell as you go in the word documents by googling so
far.
In other words, I cant get WindowEyes to work with spell checking in outlook
2016.
How do I get to the Spell As You Go setting in Word and does it or something
else have to be turned on in Outlook for the WE Outlook Enhance app to work
correctly?
I read one of the WE Tutorials the other day but don't recall anything about
this setting nor how to turn it on.
If I am missing it in a tutorial tell me and I will ReRead them.

It is alt-apostrophe or alt-semicolon.

They don't work unless you have spell as you go enabled in word.

RE: major microsoft excelle and access database file problems

2016-10-06 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Have you tried it using JAWS?
If it works in JAWS but not WindowEyes it is most likely a WindowEyes
problem.
If it does not work in JAWS either then there is something throwing an error
message that the screen readers are picking up but does not impact the
visual performance of the form(s).
This happens in Internet Explorer when something like, perhaps, a video or
advertising ad is loaded but there is a problem with the loading DLL.
The underlying web page is fine but a message is thrown about a problem
loading something until you click cancel or something and then often the
page will continue as usual.
So try JAWS and narrow the problem down some more.
Perhaps NVDA might work but I have never played with it so don't know if it
would be relevant to the problem definition.
This is the quickest attempt at a fix I can think of off hand.

RE: Thanks to Rick and Others

2016-10-05 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Dave: I am almost 70 years old, havent worked in over 20 years and my
only job skills anymore involve visual studio, vb.net and some database. I
was a mainframe pro with a couple of degrees but my chances of landing a job
are slim and his younger sister and they, as you know, are out of town
anyway.
When I could see I had calls from head hunters almost every week,
after I lost my vision it was we will call you if anything comes up but, the
phone never rang.
You need specialized skills these days and available accessibility
work-arounds for a particular job.
There are billions and billions of programmers coming out of university
these days, well perhaps not billions, but allot.
I got a grin out of the auto-pilet car job, ya now that's the ticket. Let me
behind the wheel again, perhaps formula1 or even just my local drag strip,
ya that's the ticket with one of those new 700 horspower babies!
Good luck pappy and as always good hunting!

Hi rick,

Thanks for the great list of the process I would need to do in order to
land one of these jobs.

My own estimation is not quite as long as yours, but was very similar.

I had made up my mind there was No Way in Hell I was going to involve
the State Agency for the Blind. This makes my task list a bit
shorter.

I have my reasons, most of them Good Reasons. My experience with our
State Agency is if you want to have something get turned inside out and
end up ASS Backwards, go through our State Agency for the Blind.Plus
it takes about 12 months to get something done which should take no more
than three weeks.

My Age is coming into play as I am applying for work. Most of these
jobs are held by younger people and for a good reason. They will work
for less and their minds are still quick and flexible. Mine is not as
Sharp as it was when I was 35 years younger.I'm not stupid, and I am
wiser than most younger people, but learning New stuff does not come as
easy these days.

I am thinking I may need to look for other types of work, something
where the focus is not on Programming or Testing Software.

What that might be, I am still attempting to figure out. Where do older
Software guys go when they know a fair amount about mostly out of date
stuff?

I did have a Highlight while looking for work. For a short time, I had
this guy, paid by a government grant, who was to be a Specialist in
finding work for those who have Handicaps.Any sort of Handicap.

As it turned out, he had only had his job for about 10 months, and his
job was going away in just a few more months when his Grant would run
out of money.

He did send me for an interview, where I would be testing those Cars
that are to drive themselves.

As I was reading through the requirements for the job, one of the very
first requirements was that I had to have an up to date Drivers License,
and that I could Drive.

My task would have been if I had a valid drivers license was to sit
behind the wheel and when the car's navigation system made a mistake, I
was to correct the error by slowing down, turning the wheel to avoid an
obstacle, or to bring the car to a stop.

Now I am quite interested in this kind of thing, so the type of job
would have attracted me.

But, I had to laugh since this guy is to be this Specialist in placing
someone with a Physical limitation. Guess he forgot I was totally blind.

But, I had a good laugh about it. Other than that one little thing,
called a Valid Drivers License, I might still be testing those Self
Navigating Cars.

Thanks again,

Grumpy Dave

RE: Data Bases

2016-10-04 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Again Dave:
I know a fellow who used Access, a recent version I think but don't hold me
to it, to convert a rather complicated Excel spreadsheet into the correct
format for Sql Server.
He created the Access Database, generated reports, imported, filtered and
sorted the excel data and stored the results in his Access Database. Then he
used the Access Database to convert into a Sql Server Database format - part
of his Degree Program at Liberty University.
He uses JAWS so I am not sure if he could have done all that with WindowEyes
but Access, one of the flavors, is indeed pretty accessible according to
him.
The only other thing I can think of is to hire someone to create a nice
database app for you - not too hard but time consuming.
If based off SqLite or another existing Database most of the really complex
work will already have been done and mainly just the user interface with all
the features you want need to be programmed.
If you want your own database this is one option if you cant find one out
there that suits your needs but this is likely going to be a costly option
me thinks.
Having a somewhat accessible piece of existing software scripted to tweak
the user interface to work with jaws or windoweyes might be less costely and
give you faster development and a lower cost.

Hi rick,

not sure who you were speaking to, but it was me that has ran into the
Database barrier, and have yet to figure a way around it.

Over the years, I have attempted to use Access, and had little to no
success. I had more success in the early edition of Access than say in
the 2010 edition, which is the last version I have attempted to use.

There is Using a Database, which is easier to get working than actually
Creating a Database from Scratch. In the past, I needed to create a
Database from Scratch, as no one on staff was going to build it for me
etc. And I wasn't expecting them to do so.

At the time, we had two or three Databases, one for Customers, and
another for Bug Tracking. I forget what the third database was for, but
I rarely needed to get into it.

The Company always went the Cheap route, and was using some Freeware Bug
Tracking software, and Window Eyes, at the time, would not read anything.

The same Company had a Web Based Customer Base, and Window eyes would
read bits and pieces, but not enough for me to fill out the entire form.

When I speak with HR people, I will ask, or they will ask me about my
knowledge of what ever software they use. There seems to be a wide
variety of Customer tracking and Bug Tracking software out there, and I
have to tell them that No, I do not know any of those packages. And I
do not know if my Screen Reader will read enough in any of those
packages.

I have never been one to insist the Company change everything they do so
they can have the Privilege of hiring me. Ha Ha! I have always gone
into Jobs believing it was up to me to adjust to what ever system they
are already using.I do not play the Blind Card.

I ask about Databases about every two to three years just incase someone
has made a break through, using any Screen Reader. So far, JAWS seems
to read better than any others, but from what I've read, this too is
limited.

Back in the mid 90's, MS Windows 3.1 was the big OS at the time, and
Lotus was a big player in the Spread Sheet market. Lotus came out with
a Suite of programs, A Spread Sheet, a Word Processor, and a Database
called Approach. This one database worked great with Window Eyes at
the time. I could read and create what ever database I needed.

However, the Approach software was limited and you might say our
Department out grew its capabilities.

We then moved over to Access and I never could get Window Eyes to read
as well as it had in Approach.

Probably 10 years ago, I bought a newer version of Approach, installed it
and found they had changed the program so much that Window Eyes no
longer read much of anything.

About four years ago, I was able to try a copy of Alpha 5, which is a
fantastic database, probably the best I have seen. But, Window eyes
would read some things well and not read other things. Like, I might
be able to read Menus, but once a selection was chose, the Screen Reader
would not read anything on the screen. Here again, Bits and Pieces
getting read, but not enough to be able to use the software.

I probably should have learned to write Scripts, but frankly, I was Lazy,
and just didn't want to put in the effort it would take to learn how to
write good ones.

anyway, this is my story. Others working in Government offices have
told me they can use their Network Based Database with no problems.
This is good to hear, so there are some out there able to use a Screen
Reader with a

RE: Data Bases

2016-10-04 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi David:
That is a common problem and no database is going to help since the customer
has their own database managing the tracking or crm applications depending
on the vendor who provided their software.
They may have their own programming staff who created the software in-house
and if so they may be able to make it accessible.
Otherwise it is a matter of getting the names of their software packages and
researching them to find out if any are accessible and then look for jobs
using the accessible software.
The other alternative is to have a scriptor script whatever software is
being used, the State may pay for this via the Commission for the Blind or
something - not sure.
If the entity you want to work for is a Government or related contractor
they may need to, by law, make the software accessible or pick something
else but private companies are not, as far as I know, required to make a job
accessible unless the regulations have changed or I misunderstand them.
If it were me I would find 2 or 3 popular commercial packages and learn to
use them and, or, have them scripted so you can use them and then filter the
job hunt based on what you know - a bad choice but it might work.
The key here is to find some way of using the companys software or using
something that can tie into their software or even a stand-alon package that
the boss will approve of but then you wouldn't be tied into their crm or
tracking systems.
You might have the State create a black box against a stand-alone package
that ties into the companys systems, just some programming, but you would
need to have them hire a programmer, have the company agree to it and then
learn to use the new platform.
I am thinking that scripting an existing crm and, or, tracking platform
created in a popular venue would be the way to go since it is the most
common practice I believe.
You really need to keep a list of the software they are using and ask around
to see if any of it has already been scripted and then get prices for a pro,
like the WindowEyes staff, to script the most popular ones or the ones you
are most interested in.
That said, I think I would consider talking to the JAWS scripting staff
since the status of WindowEyes is in question lately and scripting a complex
crm system could be expensive for either you, if you get the job, or the
State if they will pay for the service.

Hi Rick,

The answer is Yes, to all of those.

Actually, what I am running into is when I contact potential employers,
I do not recognize any of the Customer or Bug Tracking Software they use.
My last employer was so cheap he wouldn't spend any money for this kind
of thing, so myself and the other guys in the department used several
Freeware packages.

I rarely recognize any tracking software mentioned by potential
employers. So I have no idea if any Screen Reader will work, and
usually, the person I am speaking to is depending upon me to know, since
they don't get a lot of Blind applicants.
--

This then turns into a Stalemate situation as they don't know anything,
and I can not help them either. To show up with my copy of Window Eyes
and install it on their system, and go through all of the headakes that
usually come, I have yet to find an employer this patient, to take up
the time to see if my Screen Reader will work on their systems.

I am told to come back when I find out if my screen reader will work
with what ever software they are using. And so far, the answer is I
don't know, or No, or Kind of.

Not complaining here, but just stating what I've run into the very few
times I've actually had someone take an interest.

The last time was over a year ago.

I slacked off looking because it was like Spitting into the Wind. Then
in the last month or two, I am back to looking again, and the Database
question has come up again.

Perhaps I need to change the type of job I am looking for. Maybe I
should be a software Tester, or a Web Site tester when I grow up?

RE: Data Bases

2016-10-04 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Again:
I just did a quick Google and found several candidates but figuring out
which ones offer what you are looking for would require some homework.
A question you want answered out of the box is whether the Database offers a
built-in user interface to use the features to create, Report, Update, and
Delete items from the Database.
The next question is if the user interface is accessible and if the vendor
doesn't know you will have to experiment and pick the best one.
If you will be creating your own user interface there are several free
database engines out there like SqLite, Firebird, MySql and Microsoft Access
or Sql Server for heavy databases and Sql Compact Edition for file-based
smaller databases and even some internet applications.
Note Sql Compact Edition is no longer supported by Microsoft but still runs
perfectly on the latest Windows Platforms and the actual DLL(s) for the
engine are freely available to include in a programming project.
I am not aware, didn't look, to see if there were any user interfaces built
off these databases similar to the Microsoft Access Platform so that is
something to check out when you start doing your homework.
Perhaps someone out there has used a DB in the way you want to use one and
can save you allot of time googling and contacting vendors.
It sounds like you want a DB that you can fire up and already has all the
built-in forms and dialogs so you can create a project in the DB Platform
itself with CRUD operations built-in via user interface dialogs and then
some other custom features like sorting, filtering and the like.
If someone on this or other lists has an idea of which one will fit your
needs that will save you allot of time and headaches trying to find one
when you are a nube to the subject at hand.
Good Hunting!

Hi: The only one I can think of is the Microsoft Access DB Platform.
I know one fellow who used it well with JAWS but I have never tried it with
WindowEyes.
A custom DB manager by some third party might be out there but the
accessibility of these platforms would be the question.
Building a custom DB Manager isnt too complicated but would take some time.
Is this for a job or for your personal use and how large do you think the DB
would get - that determines if you can use something simple like a file
based system or have to go to a full server based system.

Hi Sky: They are a Financial Company, not a technical company so are likely
trying to build something they can offload to another party.
There are 2 approaches:
One is to combine WindowEyes into JAWS or just get rid of WindowEyes and
market jaws as the only really professional screen reader available to
government, educational institutes and industry or; To improve jaws or
WindowEyes or both, and market them as seperat programs for sale to someone.
My guess, 50, 50 at best, is they will eliminate WindowEyes and use the fact
that someone who buys jaws and the supporting programs will absolutely
dominate the market and sell the final product at a nice profit.
That is unless there is a blind person at that company who wants to make
their company the final owner of such a product - some special interest
overriding any profit they may pick up selling it.
Everything is still up in the air but your description of the audios is not
encouraging if you are a WindowEyes owner and user and especially for those
of us using the Office 365 versions.
Anyway, it is what it is I guess so just be ready to switch if one day
WindowEyes suddenly goes away.
New management may not even notify us of the impending change - who knows
and there are no alternatives anyway.

Hello Window-Eyes users. Sky here. I wanted to update you guys on What's
been happening at VFO Group, Particuarly in regards to Zoomtext, and
Window-eyes. In September, 2 editions of FSCast came out regarding JAWS 18.
One of the features that will be in JAWS 18 will be a talking mouse support.
The guys at VFO group has said that They have plans to put the talking mouse
support in Zoomtext, and make JAWS work with it. This made me laugh, as
first of all, Zoomtext already has Window-eyes in it, called Fusion,
secondly, Zoomtext, from my understanding, already has built in mouse
support already with Fusion. No menschen of Window-eyes or even Fusion. In
the next FSCast, VFO went into more details on JAWS 18 and Zoomtext. What is
going to happen is that in Zoomtext 11, JAWS and Zoomtext will be working
together. I can honestly tell you that they also plan to put in a talking
mouse support for MAGic, which will be released in 2017. This is not a good
sign, and besides, Zoomtext and JAWS, would cost a lot more to buy, than it
would cost to buy Zoomtext Fusion. At no point in the two FSCasts do they
menschen what's going to happen with Window-eyes.

RE: The last three security updates still causing problems

2016-10-03 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: From the sounds of it it sounds like it may be a folder permissions
issue.
One fellow copied and pasted the shortcut into another folder he knew was
setup correctly and that shortcut did not bring up any security issues as it
did when in the favorites folder.
Just a thought since this problem is not impacting me personally.

Hi,

Its not Windows Defender. If I uninstall the last security update, the
security warning goes away until the security update reinstalls itself.
Remember, these security warnnings only happen when your using Internet
Explorer and its favorites feature.

2016-09-27 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: That message means you will be unsubscribed shortly.
Their server sometimes will send messages back, they get bounced for some
reason even though the actual message is delivered. After a certain number
of these bounces their server will unsubscribe or deactivate your account.
You can click on that e-mail link if you are sure it is from the company or
go to your account on their website and click something to reactivate your
account for the e-mail list.
This has happened to me once or twice now and may happen again.
I don't remember the webpage url where you can click a check box or whatever
but if the message was indeed from their server you can reply to it as
instructed in the message and your account will be repaired automatically.
The rub is that that is how various virus hackers work to get you to click
somethigng and then load something bad on your computer. So, if you ensure
the message was from them that is the easiest way to ensure continued e-mail
service from the list otherwise do it from their website.
Ask and someone will have the webpage to go to - I just don't remember how
to get to it.

Thanks Chris: That is a very good resource.
I think I saved my installation but that group of files looks like the

The one I found googling was from 2011 - outdated indeed.
Thanks again and I am saving that file url!

scripts in script manager and many things were not working properly. I tried
using the add feature of we to load some of the existing scripts and it
looked like they were added but they still did not seem to work, outlook for

I am guessing that we will need a complete uninstall to get rid of all
existing settings and other files and an uninstall of everything we related
but the uninstall program I found online looks many years outdated.
What is the correct process to completely remove we and then reinstall it
for my we office 365 platform with all the correct files, folders and

PS: JAWS was not impacted by the windows upgrade so I don't know why we
would have been trashed but it sure seems like this is the case.

Getting Scripts Back

2016-09-26 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi and Thanks Guys: OK, I am downloading the missing scripts one at a time
and they are installing and being registered in Script Manager.
It looks like I may not have to ReInstall Windoweyes if my luck holds.
A request to the staff would be to write a script to Reload all the
Windoweyes engine and functional scripts with a single keystroke - easy
peasy for them to do and would save allot of trouble for clients.
A simple Reinstaller maintaining serial number and any authorized paid
downloads would also be nice me thinks and should be put out for each new
release of Windoweyes.
Later and sorry for hitting you over the weekend with questions but that is
when the Gods seemingly like to poke us for a grin or 2 and they don't care
about football season I guess - smile.

Hi Don: Yes. Now Windoweyes is trashed.
It starts in demo mode, only will run for 5 minutes, not enough time to do

What on Earth do I have to do to fix this Windoweyes mess?
I am guessing a ReInstall after a complete uninstall but I don't know if
there is a recent version of the uninstaller program nor if it leavs
remnants on my computer that will screw up a new install. Also, I run the
Office version and how will that be impacted? I don't even know if I still
have the Microsoft code, key, that I picked up a couple of years ago let
alone how to ReApply it to a new download.
Any tips, pointers or an article I can read someplace with jaws which still
seems to be working fine?

WindowEyes Online Office validation or something like that

2016-09-25 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: while trying to get WindowEyes running I am getting a script error on a
apparent webpage called something like WindowEyes Online User Verification
or something to that effect.
So WindowEyes is calling home, likely during startup, and not finding the
online page. After closing it I see, hear some blurb about a microsoft
office page. I also heard something about the Edge Browser. I can only type
this because I managed to get jaws fired up rpafter clicking through a bunch
of error messages, sign in requests and it all starts with that Windoweyes
Online window checking my office validation. It looks like something is
failing in a script Windoweyes is trying to use to automagically validate me
as a valid office user.
I paid my office account this month, I am pretty sure it was automatically
paid and even if not this muck of messages, errors and lockups is nuts.
What is the Windoweyes Online Office User Validation or whatever and why is
Windoweyes so mucked up all of a sudden?
It may also be the case my browser has been switched, don't know yet but I
typed Default Browser into the start box, tabbed to see what I could choose
and only have the edg browser listed as a button, no selection for Internet
Explorer anyplace I could find just in case it may have something to do with
the Windoweyes Online User Validation process and the script that is blowing
up with an error message - most likely a Windoweyes script.
During slogging through a bunch of error tables, messages and other things
that were not at all clear I heard not much else to go on other than one
blurb said something about a slo connection and that some pictures had been
removed so if Windoweyes is using some picture for verification that may be
related to the problem, or not, there is absoluetly no way for me to figure
it out.
If it wernt for jaws I would be screwed big time me thinks.
Help!
Has Windoweyes stopped supporting the office version, is there an error in
their script, is there a problem with how Windoweyes passes data to their,
and microsofts, online processes, is something else the problem?
Also, Windoweyes does not use my voice settings when it does start up in the
demo mode and it only gives me 5 minutes to try and analyze what is going on
before terminating completely so I cant really do much of anything to figure
the problem out.
This is a sick problem with little time for me to even research the problem.
I have to turn we off and turn jaws on to do more than a couple of quick
things and jaws seems to be working fine so it is likely not a system
problem on my end but something to do with Windoweyes and, or, the way they
are working with Microsoft.
I will slog around some using jaws to see if I can find anything out of
order on my end but I am guessing something else is amis but I will try and
check it out within the next 40 minutes or so.
If you have a clue let me know - I have work to do today if possible.

uninstalled this latest update, and again, the security warnings are gone.

RE: how to speed up web pages

2016-09-14 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: I get that on some pages as well.
My guess is that these pages are loading continuing items like stories while
we are trying to read something like read line to read some text. I am
guessing that WE notices a change and then starts reading the pages
underlying tree from the top until it finds wherever the last line pointer
was and that could be really slow.
I don't know but I do get this behavior on some pages as well but not so
much on others.

Subject: how to speed up web pages

Hey guys,

Alright, my frustration is really growing, and i need your help with
finding a solution. I am finding more and more web pages are extremely
slow. I find that when i'm on a web page with the latest firefox and
window-eyes, i cn literally press the down or up arrow key, and
literally count seconds from when i depress the key until window-eyes
starts talking. I'll sit there and count, 1, 2, 3, etc. It's really
annoying. I find it particularly happens on newspaper and news sites.
How can i get rid of this problem. All i care about is the text.
Pictures and other stupid images mean absolutely nothing to me. Quite
frankly it's a huge time waster, and those little blocks of 30 seconds
add up during the course of a day when i'm trying to be productive. Any
solutions?

RE: more web frustrations

2016-09-14 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
i: Yes, sometimes in a Webpage or even in a Desktop app I will be either
arrowing down through lines of text or tabbing around and WE will go dead
until I Restart it. In fact typing this WE went dead and I had to Restart it
to continue. Noted that after it came back an info message read that I was
not responding to the most recent message so perhaps it all has to do with
info bars, popups or something.
But, yes, this has been a new and frequent problem lately.
When WE is dead often Narrator is working, sometimes not but usually it will
work to indicate the computer itself is not locked up.

Hey guys,

OK, i do not understand this at all. This happened all day today while
surfing the web. I went to google, cause that's my normal search
engine. I'll go to the search box type in my search, then tab over to
the search button. A few seconds later, google is saying 1 link, i'll
press the tab key to go through the results, and here comes silence The
only way to recover it, is to re-start window-eyes. I am running the
latest we and latest firefox. This is not right. Any ideas, anyone
else experiencing similar behavior?

RE: Here is an email program that may replace Outlook Express

2016-09-08 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: I googled it and it looks like a reputable product.
The reviews I read said it is very similar to WindowsXP version of Outlook
Express.
Let me know how you find using it, the setup process and the accessibility -
does it use the Menu Dropdowns like Outlook Express did?
Outlook Express was indeed a very nice e-mail provider to work with.

RE: When will Edge Browser be ready Under WindowEyes

2016-09-01 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Rod: Perhaps I was over thinking it.
I just wanted to try and be correct in mentioning the folks and where they
work.
There was no between the lines stuff intended.
The guys are now, I would think, employees of Freedom Scientific and
AISquared and GWMicro are no longer viable entities.
Thus, while this is indeed a WindowEyes list it is owned, managed and
monitored by Freedom Scientific employees.
At least that is what I thought at the time so just used Freedom Scientific
as the new and, I thought, proper company name.
Saying hay guys at the GWMicro staff or hay guys at the AISquared staff
makes no sense if they now work for Freedom Scientific.
Anyway, I might be wrong since I don't follow corporate news but if the guys
do now work for Freedom Scientific I wanted to give them all due respect
since Freedom Scientific is a very good company just like GWMicro and
AISquared were and the guys working on WindowEyes are likely the same guys
we have come to know over the years only under that new umbrella you
mentioned.
Anyway, no hidden meanings, just tried to be correct in my use of
termonology.

Hi Rick,

I have to say, my friend, obviously with tongue in cheek, that you're
barking up the wrong tree if you're addressing your comments to the Freedom
Scientific staff, since, in truth, this is an AI Squared list.
The two companies may be under the same umbrella, but, in the words of
Sting, well, the Police rock band,"it's a big enough umbrella, but it'S
always me that ends up getting' wet."
I guess what I'm trying to highlight is the fact that the two companies will
continue to work independently in the development of their screen reader
offerings, at least in the short term.

Affectionately,

Rod (smile)

RE: services, privacy win 10

2016-08-31 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: Yup, figuring out all the services is a bugger and there many many that
I have not figured out so leave alone.
I did turn off all the active tiles and then turned off apps running in the
background I don't use.
I also turned off Microsoft features I wouldn't use that sync or store
things in the Microsoft cloud since these require internet access behind the
scenes and may impact performance.
I left most the services alone since I couldn't figure out if they would be
needed as you mentioned but I think I turned a couple off or set them to
manual or whatever, that was some time ago.
I found a tool by typing "Reliability" into the start menu that abstracts
some of the information about performance and errors and it is somewhat
accessible with WindowEyes finding that Internet Explorer was crashing off
and on, ya I knew that but...
It looked like it was crashing during times I was not even using it -
perhaps something behind the scenes is using it while not displaying it?
I do know that if I am in Internet Explorer and it crashes it will lock up
WE for at least a time.
I could not figure out how to change the day nor week filters nor if there
is other data WindowEyes is not telling me and it is a bit clunky but at
least it works for recent, or weeks, messages that impact performance for
some things.
I am not confident enough to try anything related to setting up Performance
Counters and creating my own reports and using WindowEyes in the Microsoft
Management Console which is a split window with MDI elements is a bugger.
Anyway guys, I hope some of us actually learn how to use our machines and
the tools to manage it so we can share what we learn since it is a rather
complex set of tools and many are not very user friendly with WE and some
seem inaccessible unless we can figure out navigation and usage techniques
let alone what they do and how to use them even if they were accessible.
But these are the things the pros use when managing computers in a business
so it is either learn them, stay in the dark or put the Geek Squad on speed
dial - smile.

RE: services, privacy win 10

2016-08-30 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Don:
The privacy settings are more about what information Microsoft gathers and
saves about you and related to various features.
You can check them out by tabbing to the start menu, arrowing down to the
settings button, hit it, then right arrow to the Privacy item, hit enter,
then arrow up and down the list of items.
The General item at the top of the list has some things you might want to
turn off and you can tab or right arrow through the options for the General
item.
You can go back, tabbing, to the General item and arrow down through the
list of other optional things.
I also turned off several of the items listed in the background apps item.
You might have to do some googling before turning an item off to ensure you
don't need it and that will depend on what you are using that requires you
to share data on your computer with Microsoft Online in the cloud as it
were.
Ditto the background apps. Just don't turn off something you use on a
regular basis but I believe you could always just turn it back on - not sure
since I just don't use the items I turned off.
Again, know what you use and if not sure do some homework googling.

RE: Task Scheduler seems to run in Microsoft Management Console

2016-08-30 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Lary:
That is about what I do when things slow down or lock up as well and, of
course, alt-tab often works.
To try and figure out what is going on would require, at best, using the
Windows Tools but I have been struggling to figure out how to read and use
them using WindowEyes.
I have gotten a little in some of them but they are dynamic and loaded into
the Microsoft Management Console as snapins.
The Management Console is layed out as a 2 sided window, usually hidden and
running things behind the scenes.
When it is visible as in the case of the system logs and the Performance
Monitoring and Counters I can tab around, f6 and otherwise just navigate
blindly not knowing if something being read is a tab, box, list or custom
view of something and the Management Console tools are themselves prone to
locking up, actually WindowEyes locking up, and WindowEyes also not
recognizing its state it seems after working in it for a little and trying
to open and close features inside it as these features UI elements are
changed and disposed or hidden.
I have been able to sometimes use the mouse, sometimes, to read things that
the normal arrow and tab keys wont read but headings in some of the controls
are not being read so so far I don't know what some buttons, table elements
in a list etc... do if I click them - not good at this level of sensitivity
of managing my machines operating system.
This may also a problem for WindowEyes while we are working in something
like Internet Explorer, NotePad or even just on the Desktop. WE may be
trying to respond to window messages loaded for the hidden window, grabbing
focus or at least WE attention for some time, and thus WE losing focus,
trying to read something that isnt there in the hidden window or just
floundering around trying to figure out how to handle window messages not
related to what us as users are doing at any given time - again, just don't
know.
I wonder if anyone has ever seen any documentation on how to use WindowEyes
with the various system tools like the LogFiles and Performance monitoring
tools and reports.
Anyway, this could be behind a host of intermittent and almost impossible to
describe slowdowns, lockups and hickups folks have found using WindowEyes
over the years - just don't know but symptoms would seem to fit.
To you guys who know WE filters messages that is not the beginning and end
of message processing and it may even be bypassed or details not provided in
a way the WE model can handle - ya, again, I don't know sigh.
Later Lary and good hunting!

Task Scheduler seems to run in Microsoft Management Console

2016-08-29 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Rod: I just fired up Task Schedular and looked in the Task Manager and
the Microsoft Management console was running. When my machine was locked in
the system logs window, not responding, I hit delete on the Microsoft
Management Console in the running processes to cancel it and WindowEyes came
back and focus was returned to the Desktop.
This is just one of many system operations that use this hidden window in
many diferent ways from what we read this morning.
When my machine locks up like when in, I don't know, Note Pad for want of a
better idea example, if I fire up narrator I hear "Send Us Feedback" then
nothing.
The WE hot key to read the title bar would still tell me I was in NotePad
but, I think if I remember from a few months ago, that the Reassign window
type would tell me I was in something indicating the TaskBar. In any event,
handling feedback messages is one of the behind the scenes that the
Microsoft Management Console hidden window is involved in and that is what I
hear, the only thing I can make sense out of, when WE does lock up.
So, it does appear that Task Scheduler may likely be using the Microsoft
Management Console hidden window and that may be playing into your situation
like it may likely be playing into my problems with the system logs and even
perhaps WE losing focus and Narrator telling me "Send us feedback" when it
opens - don't know but hope someone has a clue and some pointers for more
in-depth homework on my part.

RE: Accessing System Logs with WE and W10

2016-08-29 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Rod:
There seems to be problems with WE and a hidden window called Microsoft
Management Console that is used by allot of the Microsoft operating
sub-systems.
I am not sure if Task Scheduler is among them since a heavy weight friend of
mine helped me narrow down the problem to this hidden window and that WE
tends to lose focus or lock up when this hidden windows contents are
changed.
This is not the case with JAWS and I am not familiar with nvda usage.
My problem is that I get periodic slowdowns and sometimes lockups while in
things like Notepad or even my own visual studio created platform created
with WE accessibility in mind from the ground up.
This may be a result of background or operating system activities using the
Microsoft Management Console behind the scenes, WE losing focus and if WE
gets into the hidden window you would get no arrow key action, usually no
tab responses but things like alt-tab will navigate around open applications
since the Microsoft Management Console is just one of the objects in the
list.
System Management, Admin tools, Feedback processes and other system tools
use this Microsoft Management Console window behind the scenes and make it
visible when appropriate but it is likely WE is not working properly with
it, not sure.
There must be some on list who use things like setting performance counters,
monitoring and customizing performance reports and use the system logs but
so far today I have not heard from them.
Again I run a dell optiplex, W10 Pro.
I want to figure out what is going on so I can learn to use my machine
properly to analyze and debug performance issues but I cant even use the
bloody tools to figure out what is causing the problem since I cant, so far,
get WE to work properly with the Admin tools like the Performance Counters,
Performance Reports and even the bloody System Logs.
I hope someone knows how to do these things using WindowEyes - they all work
perfectly with JAWS per my friend demonstrating this morning.
Rick USA

system but WE seems to be getting lost and, so far, I have not found a way
to use my operating system tools with WindowEyes.
Also, the various feedback mechanisms use this window and when my WE locks
up and I first start Navigator the only thing I hear is "Send us feedback"
but there is no indication of where it is coming from, the we title bar will
read whatever I was in like "Desktop Normal" but no arrow key actions nor
tab actions unless I alt tab or minimize or something and this sure sounds
like a result of a hidden window grabbing the attention of WE and we not
handling it correctly, or not, just don't know.
I have been looking at getting a copy of JAWS which may be a prudant thing
to do anyway.
There is allot of complexity to the Windows Operating system and you can do
things like set performance counters to determine what apps or events are
causing things like intermittent lockups or slowdowns but so far not with
WindowEyes since the tools are all loaded and managed in the Microsoft
Management Console window and it looks like WE staff may not have known this
or addressed it or whatever - it just isnt working properly.
Perhaps there is some setting but these tools are the fundemental tools for
maintaining and managing your computer so you would think WE would have
addressed this as a primary accessibility feature of their platform and the
Windows Operating System but perhaps not.
I am interested in if there are any computer people on list who know what I
am talking about since most of us are sort of novice users and don't really
know anything about our machines.
There might be a few folks who do know how to use their machines at this
level and I am hoping they can point me in a direction to get all the
Windows Management tools working properly with WindowEyes - JAWS is like$900
- ouch and ouch again not to mention the new learning curve, ouchers big
time.
Anyway, that's my story and Im sticking to it and I hope someone on list
will either chime in with something or straighten out my misunderstandings.
Hay, not knowing is not bad but not knowing and not knowing that you don't
know, like I was this morning,
If WE really will not work with the Windows OS and its management
facillities WE is sort of useless except for browsing and some general usage
so long as nothing goes amis.

Windows Management Console and WindowEyes Accessibility Issues?

2016-08-29 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: My dell Optiplex windows 10 pro machine is experiencing slowdowns and
sometimes lockups.
I went into the system logs but got locked up when I closed reading of one
of the info messages.
I walked through the situation with a J
AWS user and he did not experience any problems.
We found that closing the Windows Management Console in Task Manager closed
the system logs window and returned me to the desktop.
There are several events that use the Microsoft Management Console hidden
window including sending feedback messages.
When my machine locks up and I start Narrator I hear "Send Us Feedback" then
my machine, windoweyes, locks up until I tab around or do something other
than the arrow keys and sometimes even the tab keys wont get me back to
normal but I can minimize and continue as normal.
So, how do you work with the system logs in windows 10 like expanding the
list, the list did not read using the arrow keys but I had to use the mouse,
I then could tab to the list of messages, hit enter and read the message in
the text box but when I closed, escaped, the text WindowEyes locked up and
from our analysis this is managed in the hidden Microsoft Management Console
window.
How do you work with the objects, windows and text that is automatically
managed in the Microsoft Management Console window?
I need to be able to get into them and also into the performance counters to
try and determine what is causing my slowdowns generally.
Again, it is a WindowEyes problem or a setting on my machine since all this
works as expected using JA
WS so the Microsoft end of things is working correctly.

RE: Saying goodbye

2016-08-27 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Well Mark, now you might have a link of your own called something like
"Accessibility Center" or "Accessibility Support" on the Chase website.
Then we might still keep in touch.
Congratulations on the move - I am jellous since I loved working at a bank
back in the day.

Hi everyone,
It has been a pleasure and a privilege to be part of the Window-Eyes
community for the past 7 years. So, it is with a heavy heart that I share
this news. Today is my last day working for Ai Squared. I was made a job
offer that was too good to refuse. As much as I love my current job, this
was the best decision for my family. Next month, I will start my new job as
a Senior Accessibility Specialist for JP Morgan Chase. This position will
give me the opportunity to help Chase further their mission to build
inclusive digital experiences for all of their customers. If you would like
to stay in touch, feel free to follow me on Twitter. I don't tweet often,
but when I do, I usually distribute information on digital accessibility and
assistive technology. My handle is mr_marcsolomon. As a final thought,
please continue to educate others about the importance of accessibility and
do what you can to help make this world a better place.
Cheers,
Marc

WE or W10 not returning to accessible Desktop

2016-08-24 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: I open any program, notepad, outlook or my own applications and close
them.
WE, or w10 then put focus on the desktop but the up and down arrows do not
read anything until I tab out and back to the desktop, hit windows-m or f6
around.
The window title when nothing is read says Desktop Normal but WE cant read
anything. Is there some setting or WE App that controls this feature that may
be changed or not working?
It is annoying and routing the mouse to the quote empty Desktop cant be
done cant route mouse to frame or cant route mouse to whatever those little
messages are, I forget what they are called but figuring out what may be
involved in how WE reads the Desktop window or frame, a setting or script,
might give me something to look at.

RE: GW Script Update site down?

2016-08-24 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi David: You are correct but remember they are under new management with
new user interaction rules.
In the past they notified us about changes so I am leaning twoard the fact
they are just making changes to the site but not getting any notice is
unusual from the GW Staff if a change is to be a major one.
They will, of course, be changing the company name and all the web address
names of their pages to reflect their new home but I would have thought they
would notify us of such pending changes and down time.
There is always the possibility... ya that's the ticket just cut bait and
run home to papa fish.
Anyway, my problem was something outside the arena of WindowEyes web sites
since I thought I may have had a dns problem but it seems something else is
afoot.
And, being prepared is what I learned in Boy Scouts some 60 years ago or so,
smile.

Could it, possibly, happen they just are experiencing unexpected
technical issues? Or could it, possibly, be due to issues outside their
control, i.e issues with the ISP servers? Even, could it be simple as a
power-failure - due to whether conditions?

Nope, I do have no answer. But relying on former experience, had this
been the final migration to something else, I have seen the staff
introduce us the new solutions. So just because the page is down for a
day or two, I would not spin any speculations. Both this list, and the
Scripting list, have received numbers of messages the last couple of
days, so really not too much would be different at the moment.

My guess is, even your screen reader may function as normal, no matter
the page up or down currently. Should you be in search for a particular
app, try advertise here, and maybe the app developer - or some other
user - could send you the installation file, while we are awaiting
further notice from the staff.

If the site still is down a week from now, you could of course try call
their support center, and ask what is going on. Smile. Point is, why
jump to any conclusion at the moment?

Hi Guys:
Perhaps they are just changing the site to reflect recent ownership changes
but I would have thought they would have notified us the site and the update
apps pages were going to be down and provided a temporary site or page for
us to visit related to the new Freedom Scientific JAWS / WindowEyes home.
By the way, do any of you know of a good e-list like this talk list and, or,
scripting e-list we might migrate to if the WindowEyes objects go away

It might be a good thing for all of us to have a common landing pad if we

even if only a temporary home.

Hi Rod and Carol: I am getting very bad pauses trying to type this in
outlook and WE has been losing focus and returning to task bar while I am in
other programs lately and even locking up. Things aree not good unless I
type quite slowly. This just started happening recently and often when I
close a program we will return to the DeskTop but read nothing until I tab
around. Sometimes the Desktop icons read like a single string, the down
arrow just reads what sounds like a concatenated string. Things seem to be
getting worse. Tthis happens only after I have been logged on my computer
for some time.
Anyway, I hope someone has an idea or I get things fixed or things just
start working again correctly. When we is dead narrator usually reads the
content well but often I can nnoot hi, got to locking up very soon - l

RE: Windows Software, WE and Updates And Upgrades

2016-08-16 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Rod:
I was doing some general reading about how Microsoft pushes out upgrades and
updates.
It appears, the article was confusing, that MS may hold off pushing out
upgrades and updates, other than critical ones, for about 4 months after the
initial rollout to folks like home users to ensure there are no glitches and
that any necessary fixes are in place before the pro users get the update or
upgrade.
There are also other schedules they use for Enterprise and some specialized
users.
There is a check box on your computer you can check that would, I think,
defer installing of updates and upgrades for 8 months, not sure how it would
impact home users.
I have the default automagic install of updates and upgrades and have not
changed this setting as I was not sure if it was a good idea at the time.
I forgot to save the url to the article or would put it here for all to read
but can try to find it again if anyone is interested and cant find it.
I wonder if this is what is going on.
I wonder if MS is just waiting 4 months to push the windows 10 anniversery
edition to the Windows Pro users.
They did say that pro users could download updates and upgrades manually but
I don't recall any setting to allow automatic download and install for pro
users as they are rolled out.
This may be why we have not received the new upgrade on our windows pro
machines - fingers crossed they get it right.
As for the Office 365 updates I will look into that via the link you
provided and perhaps upgrade there but because of the problems I see others
having with the 2016 Outlook version I will need to do some homework prior
to getting off into that mire, sigh.
That's all I have this early morning to report as I am really, really busy
trying to repair my investing platform after some changes Yahoo has made to
their website and I have to switch to pulling down data from the NASDAQ now.
Later and thanks for the help.

Hi Rick,

If you type update in the search edit box in the Start menu, Check for
Updates will appear.
If you press Enter on this, you'll be taken to the Windows Update dialog.
If you tab to the Check for updates button and Press it, you'll activate the
manual download of available updates.
Once downloads are available, tabbing to the Install button will actually
install them, and you'll be asked to restart your system when installed.
Now, if you don't manually install updates, this will normally be done
automatically if you leave your system on overnight.
I manually installed updates on my Windows 10 Pro virtual machine twice over
the last week, the last time being today.
Now, even though the Windows Update dialog continues to report that my
Windows is up to date, the current build of my Windows version is still
1511.
I'm starting to be convinced that the anniversary update is either only for
Windows 10 Home, or it will be rolled out to Pro later.
Perhaps Home users are the guinea pigs while the advanced Pro users remain
happy go lucky with their stable 1511 build. Grin

All the best,

Rod

Hi:
I don't think I have ever gotten any updates or upgrades for office 365 and

I have received the automatic updates like for windows defender loaded

I am wondering if I have not registered my software correctly or something

Also, WE does not work correctly when searching for features in the start

I hit enter to open it, type something then have to hit the down arrow key,
tab out and back in to read every entry, not very good and not sure if this
is normal WindowEyes behavior.
There are other things I am noticing but these 2 are a good starting point
to start trying to figure things out, learn what I need to and or request
fixes as I move through trying to figure out what is going on.
I run a Dell Desktop Optiplex, windows 10 pro and the latest WE.
My Outlook in the start list and on the desktop reads as Outlook2013 but in
the properties window the executable is Outlook15 so I don't have a clue as

Hi Rod et All:
I run windows 10 v 1511 I think with WE 9.5 I think.
As mentioned we need to get the W10 anniversery edition for screen readers.
Did you download the Media Creation tool you posted the url to and how does
that work to download the free upgrade or does it?
Does the Media Creation tool have you enter the url of the free version for
screen reader users or what does the process look or sound like as you
download and install?
I am running W 8.1 currently and sure would like to avoid all the problems
if I can.

RE: netflix accessibility

2016-08-06 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: I use Netflix but I don't think it is very accessible.
I can pick a show to watch from those listed on the opening web page or type
something into the search box and often get some listings.
I have to turn browse mode off to tab through the shows to watch and
sometimes they start and other times I have to tab around the page that
comes up and either click play with browse mode on or off, just have to
fiddle around a little sometimes.
I think there are allot more shows to watch than I get in a single web page
listing but I have not found how to get them but there are allot to choose
through anyway.
I also can turn on browse mode to read around the pages and sometimes can
click something, sometimes I can click a heading and get more listings for a
category or click the more button to get more choices.
The trick is to scout around with browse mode on and then with it off for
each page you are on and that is about the best I have been able to do so
far.
I have watched many tv shows, hundreds and hundreds of episodes so it can be
done but it sucks and Netflix nor WindowEyes has come up with a decent
solution in the past few years as accessibility gets worse and worse.
As for pausing and ReStarting there is a button to Play/Pause on the page
that is displayed when a show is playing but it takes a few minutes after
the show starts to appear on the page.
That's all I have for now. What has your experience been trying to use
Netflix lately?

Subject: Had to reactivate SNO after anniversary update

As I'm sure most of you don't remember, like I remember that when
upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 back in April, I was placed
back into demo mode, and ultimately found the option in the licensing
dialog box of WE help to reactivate my serial number, and all was well
from then on. Well, over night after MS updated my machine with the
latest and hopefully greatest, I once again woke up in demo mode. I
repeated the same process, and all once again went as it should have.
So, this is my question.

I am now left with only one reactivation opportunity, and am pretty sure
that I will have to go through this process the next time MS comes up
with a major update, or upgrade. So, once I run out, then what can I do.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that I am using the Window-Eyes
Office version.

Any help will be greatly appreciated,

Larry

RE: My Take On things.

2016-06-14 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Chris: It was my fault mentioning trade regulations - didn't think about
the possibility they were in financial trouble - should have since I have
thought that for several years now but panic seems to temporarily block
rational thinking sometimes.
I said it would likely do no good contacting government in my last post
after a calmer reflection on the situation.
Had the folks at WindowEyes not done this they may have had to just turn off
the lights, lock the door and go home sooner rather than later.
At least this way there may be a smooth transition for us clients into

Hi:
So would you contact the Justice Department or the FTC to file a complaint?
There are allot of scriptors out here who have put allot of time and effort
into work that wont be used under jaws and the folks who have purchassed the
office product to get hthe low-cost version of WindowEyes will be hurt as
well if, when, WindowEyes is cancelled.
I thought about calling but jaws actually works a little better than
WindowEyes in Visual Studio, my main work platform, for now, so the loss of
WindowEyes will only cost me if the Microsoft / WindowEyes pricing
structure is deprecated and I am forced to buy a full copy of jaws.

It's been a while since I've had to have any knowledge of this, as this was
not my area of legal expertise. However, I think Anti-trust suits are
usually brought by the Justice Department, and as this really affects only a

very small smidgeon of the overall computer market, I wouldn't look for any
action by DOJ. on this. There may be a private right of action, by
stockholders, but I don't know for sure, and since I'm now retired--you
know--a recovering attorney--LOL, I'm not really interested in finding
out.but since there are other options including Narrator which I believe has

no cost, I doubt this would fly either. Also, you would have to show that
the public, even a segment of the public has been harmed by this
acquisition, and since it has just happened, that would be difficult to
prove.

I haven't kept up with all these developments much since I still use XP, and

Windows 8.4. I've been thinking about upgrading to Windows 7, since I've
read so many people experiencing difficulty of one kind or another in using
windows X. Maybe I should make the switch to Apple.

Hello everyone,

I wanted to chime in here and give my personal thoughts to the bombshell
released today regarding VFO (the parent company of Freedom Scientific
and Optelec) acquiring Ai Squared. And by bombshell, I don't mean a bad
thing, I just mean it is shocking and unexpected news.

I know this may seem scary to many people. I know that we have a great
number of extremely loyal customers who may be feeling betrayed. There
are lots of legit concerns and questions that I'm sure come to
everyone's minds. But honestly, nobody knows the answers at this
point. We are just starting the discussions internally of how best to
take all our new resources, talent, products, etc. and meld them
together to give the best customer experience. For the next 6 months or
so, it will be business as usual. After the 6 months, who knows at this
point but I can guarantee the customers will benefit from the results.
Nobody will be abandoned or taken advantage of, etc. I'm very impressed
with John Blake (CEO of VFO). I truly believe John is in this for the
customer.

Personally, I'm extremely excited with the possibilities. Think about
it, we now have all the best minds in this industry under one roof.
Instead of us duplicating resources, we can combine them and inovate.
Although Freedom has been our number one competitor since Dan and I
started GW Micro in 1990, I've always had great respect for their
engineers. Okay, I've had questions about their corporate leadership, a
certain lawsuit comes to mind (smile), but that was a completely
different leadership team. That was a different owner and a different
CEO. Vector has an outstanding reputation. John Blake has shown great
leadership and concern for the customer. Under this new leadership and
available resources, I'm ready to take that and do whatever it takes to
have the best possible solutions for our customers, for every low vision
and blind person out there.

People may be concerned about lack of competition causing innovation and
quality to suffer. Nothing can be further from the truth. There is
still plenty of competition out there, including free options but we
have the determination and drive, starting at the corporate level all
they way down to provide the best quality products, hands down. Yes,
this will take some time to prove but I'm hoping that everyone out there
will give us that opportunity. Again, I'm putting everything I have into
this venture and I wouldn't do that if I didn't believe in it.

Regards,
Doug

Computer Accessibility

2016-05-12 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
This is all my personal opinion based on watching business and industry over
many years, it may or not be correct - take it for what it is worth.
Accessibility for the disabled is a result of political pressure on large
companies since it is an additional time / money cost.
Less political pressure, less accessibility over time.
Microsoft has been, in the past, very accessible from the design of their OS
to products they Produced due to both past political pressures and Mr. Gates
personal internal company humanistic pressures.
Google and other major vendors have done just enough to keep them out of
government and public opinion cross-hairs.
Apple followed the Microsoft plan but is seeing its phones selling weaker
along with tablets and other hardware and will likely follow Google and
Microsoft away from built-in accessibility hooks on their products, I.B.M.
also comes to mind, doing just enough to stay out of government and media
limelights.
You old-timers may remember I have noted all this in the past when
Silverlight came out and Microsoft said they would make it accessible some
day, when they pushed out their inaccessible cell phones and now I mention
this again as Microsoft again pushes out an inaccessible product - the Edge
Browser without any serious government ramifications.
Postponing or eliminating accessibility allows these companies to push out
new product faster and at a lower cost, what do they gain for the outsized
costs of making product accessible to small groups where the cost / benefit
analysis says that group is negative from a profit standpoint?
Accessibility like freedom needs constant vigilance and action when
necessary me thinks.

Hi: Same here but not so often.
I either go into the WindowEyes website and fix the problem as described in

This does not happen with any other lists I am on.
There can be several reasons it is happening but there is, as far as I know,
not much you can do at your end to fix it.
Some have said that switching e-mail providers might help - don't know and
that would depend on the reason causing the bounces back to their servers

likely not a virus.
First, do the programs, WindowEyes scripts (apps) get deleted from your

If you can find one or 2 of the apps that are not appearing in the list in

RE: Question On issue of WE9.3 hanging because waiting for it's query response,

2016-03-01 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi Manny:
I should imagine the programmers in those programs would allow for multiple
request response sessions.
The problem may be one of focus or the object types and instances being
displayed.
Without having the programs at hand I can not guess at what is going on.
They may be creating new object instances to display or they may be just
refilling existing instances.
In either case I have noted that unless they set focus to the window and
then to the control WindowEyes, and indeed jaws, can lose focus and end up
trying to read something else like the most recent entry in the tab
sequence.
This is diferent from a year or 2 ago when a programmer could just set focus
to the object of interest like a text box or list and have the screen reader
manage to focus that control correctly.
I have found this in my own programs most recently so I am guessing while
this would not impact sighted folks, the insert or whatever is still on the
correct control, reading has shifted away from the control of interest when
it comes to a screen reader.
Can you alt tab around and use the tab keys or arrow keys to get back into
any of the controls or is window eyes actually locking up including the
keyboard?
If window eyes is not locked up but wont read try using narrator to see if
you can hear anything.
Note that in my case the title bar read the correct form but window eyes was
reading me the last item in the tab sequence control.
There may be other things at play in your case indeed, actually very likely,
but this is something to try for now.
Do you know what programming languages are being used by your trading

Why does this hanging occurs after several right clicks and arrowing?
Does this mean that the programmer only program to answer only 2 or 3

The same with my Fritz 12 and chessbase 11. I can do one game analysis

goes silent.
Does this mean that the programmer only program to answer only one query?
Will a WE9.3 update fix this issue?

2016-02-28 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: I just responded to a message on this list and got a response from the
AI Squared support list.
Please don't include list addresses external to your own address or this
list in the to address when crafting a message since responding to your
message will then generate messages to inappropriate people for whom the
message was not (directly) intended.
I don't want to have to read every to address carefully when responding to a
list message and I don't have to do this on any other list I am on so please
have some list manners.
If it was an oversight, cool, that happens but if it was a way to push
messages to support that is an inappropriate use of the list me thinks.

2016-02-28 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: Jonathan, looks like your message was blank.
The fact that WindowEyes can crash the system, lock it up, when no reply is
found from a called method or object is a bug in WindowEyes.
In programming, especially when programming against third party apps, you
put a request for anything in a test block so that if the object or method
does not return an expected value you handle the error and continue
processing.
This is not bad code but a bug in WindowEyes.
Their well may be a way around the quote no response by getting the
information from someplace else or by using some other feature of the third
party program but to lock up the screen reader because of a problem in a
third party program is a bug pure and simple.
I have said this when I analyzed a similar situation for Internet Explorer
11, your fault, my fault, nobodys fault just fix it AI Squared.
That means testing the objects and methods within a very short timed bcode
block or a try catch block or something to that effect and handling any
error message or no response situation in the WindowEyes program.
As for no response to AI Squared from third party vendors, you have a legal
department don't you - use them.

2016-02-23 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: How well does skype texting work with WindowEyes in Windows10?
I have a request from another programmer to share some ideas and perhaps
code using skype texting but I have never used skype and I think even have
it turned off in Windows10 since I heard something in the old days about
performance issues with skype and perhaps memory leaks etc but that was
years ago.
He also mentioned there were third party apps that made skype read better
but I remember some WindowEyes users talking about skype some time ago so
thought I would see if anyone is a regular skype user for texting and get
their impressions of the good bad and ugly before I start reading about how
this program works from Microsoft I think.

More On Internet Explorer Crashes

2016-02-22 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi:
I found 2 settings so far that impact lockups and, or, crashes.
The software rendering setting I described earlier and now I can further
reduce long pauses and lockups by checking or unchecking the block activeX
setting under the Tools Menu in Internet Explorer.
Crashes are caused when something that IE is trying to load or run crashes
or has delays.
Some of these are activeX controls.
On pages that use these for things like audio / video or advertising
blocking the activeX execution will make things run smother and cleaner.
On some pages blocking activeX might cause a video not to play, others the
videos will still play normally.
I am now checking block activeX on sites I want to read or use in any way
but if I get a problem with something not playing like a video I Uncheck
this setting.
There is a tracking setting I have not played with but, from what I have
read, is akin to the adBlock software with lists and all that jazz and I may
try that out sooner or later unless we get Edge pretty soon.
But then there is getting to be allot of settings to try and coordinate
whenever you want something on a page to just render properly without any
lengthly pauses or crashes me thinks.
I can remember to turn on or off activeX for various sites and even cpu
versus software rendering I use but adding another setting into the mix is
going to get pretty confusing to fix quickly if something doesn't work as
advertised on some site.

New Edge Browser Accessibility Status

2016-02-19 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: I guess Microsoft has been working on making Edge more accessible from
some googling I have done.
If someone at AI Squared is involved with the Microsoft Edge accessibility
development project effort per their request for developers involvement,
what is the status of an accessible Edge coming out in early or mid 2016?

Internet Explorer Lockups

2016-02-19 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: Lets change the Is WindowEyes causing Lockups topic title since it does
not appear to be a problem unique to WindowEyes.
Some folks are getting off topic in that thread and I am just trying to
narrow the problem down to see if we cant come up with a common set of items
to try and find or suggest a fix.

Something To Try For IE Lockups

2016-02-18 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: I sent a complete message about 2:00 this afternoon but I havent seen it
hit the list so:
If you are familiar with IE Tools and settings try and report the results:
Open Internet Explorer Browser;
Under the Tools  menu  click Internet Options  then
highlight the  Advanced  tab and put a checkmark in front of "Use software
rendering instead of GPU rendering and click ok.
I did this and tried Internet explorer and it crashed again but this time
the
(atiumdva.dll)
Was the culprit.
I ReBooted and tried again and on one webpage I did a read to end on a
article and mid article I heard windowEyes stop for a second, about of 1
second of what sounded like music or an add and then WindowEyes continued
reading the article like nothing happened.
After that I went through several pages and articles with no more crashes
and WindowEyes seems to be reading much faster and responsive now.
I dont know if this is a fix or not but if you know what I am talking about
try it out and post up if it fixes your problems.

RE: Is WindowEyes Causing All Internet And Other Crashes?

2016-02-18 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: Yes, I had allot of focus problems due to that popup.
This is one reason I am still concerned that WindowEyes is not handling them
properly and there are likely others happening.
Often I would hear "give us feedback" even after turning this off in the
Windows10 settings, think it was "send us feedback" before I turned it off.
Now when I switch pages or open a new program I will hear "Clear" or "clear
button" meaning something else is popping up that I cant find after I hear
it read using any of the WindowEyes keys so far.
There a lot of moving parts to Windows and how the screen reader handles
them can be a problem for focus, insert position and the relationship
between them me thinks.
That message is one thing that pushed me over the edge and convinced me to
upgrade to Windows10 but I am not sure that just turning that message off,
some folks had figured out a way to do it, I would have been happier with
Windows8.1 or whatever it was.
Anyway, there should be a way to turn off that popup and perhaps someone
will RePost the solution.

An unrelated note, you may remember last week I posted that WE was

This barely happens now. Occasionally, We will lose focus while I am

RE: Is WindowEyes Causing All Internet And Other Crashes?

2016-02-18 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
A side note, anyone else?
I was just in internet explorer in the website where I get allot of lockups.
I got none but it is about 4:30 am so likely little net traffic here and not
allot of dynamic, flash and other ads being scheduled since they don't want
to waste money with ads when few people are online in this area.
Now, when I closed internet explorer and returned to my desktop program I
heard a ca ching and WindowEyes said there was no information bar, think it
was information bar and then I was placed into my desktop program as usual.
I used alt-f4 to close internet explorer so this message should not have
happened unless WindowEyes was confused about something and so I thought I
would see if others have heard this or something similar.
It may indicate WindowEyes processing a message or something like being in
the wrong script or something if it happens so it was unusual, happened and
we need to see if it is happening often enough to be in consideration when
thinking about internet explorer, focus and intermittant problems we are
encountering.
But if others are not having these types of problems we might not need to
include them in looking at the problem at hand - don't know but it was an
incorrect response by WindowEyes to a simple alt-f4 to close internet
explorer.
