THE PAN is sublime. I'm a PAN pusher - I've gotten a few of my
students addicted (actually I was delighted to find one of my
students' videos for the Soft Pink TRuth on it!). I have trouble
keeping up so have to binge on back issues some days, but from the
start it had so much stuff I already loved (caveh! 50 foot wave! ebn!)
PLUS a great overview of vlog work. Just wonderful.

He Ted,

Before you rush to buy try this:

When you want to export the vid go to FILE MENU

File -- scroll down to
Export -- scroll to -- Using Quicktime Conversion - click on this -- a
window pops up
Click on Format -- a menu opens -- scroll up to Windows format - wullah! --
selct and you can export as WMV

This is a oneway to find out if you have Quicktime pro installed! If not
your friend might need to get a copy.

Good luck,

[videoblogging] How Much Time Do You Spend Editing?

2006-04-07 Thread Monique Danielle

Hello Vloggers,

I'm curious abouthow much times folks spend editing and what
programs they use? Also how oftendo you vlog, as that impacts time
available to edit?

I'm using Adobe Premiere and myediting skillsare
extremely undeveloped(dare I say, they suck!). Anyway, I would love for
folks to reply to thispost by linkingdirectly to a video or two and
telling howlong it took them to film and edit each video, and
whatediting software they are using. And, how often they vlog.
I'm trying to get an idea of what I should be shooting for.

The
Adobe Premiere help files are pretty good, but I'm still missing alot of the
power of the program. Do you know of any good online/interactive
tutorials?

I have
three vlogs and I'm trying to decide how to approach them:
1.
VlogDiva - I would like to post weekly there. My favorite entry is
'Characteristics of Bad Website Design', but believe it or not it took me a long
time to edit that video. So I'm starting to think that I'm just going to read
from a prompter. I spend so much time writing the script that I dont want to
have to spend a bunch of time memorizing and editing to.

2.
VlogChallenge - That one is easy because all I'm going to do is film myself
announcing a challenge. But if I can get enough participants each week I would
also like to make a remix of all entries for a given challenge.

3.
ShopSWFL - This regional community site has a ton of back end functionality, but
no content and is basically a shell right now. But once I launch in a few weeks
I would like to start doing a daily vlog where I film people and places in
and around SWFL for two to four minutes. I'm curious to see if anyone else
is doing this - I would like to seehow they are doing it, what the quality
is, etc.

I'm currently using Adobe Premiere Elements. I can generally finish
editing, including audio cleanup, transitions, and titles, in 2-3 hours.
If I started out with a loose storyboard and was able to pick my shots
from the beginning, it takes less time. If I have a mass of footage to
hunt through looking for things to use, it takes much more.

Our goal has been to have a 5-minute post every week. Because both I and
my partner work day jobs (college professor and engineer at Motorola) and
we're both engaged actively in research (she has a research profile to
maintain and I'm working on my Ph.D), it really isn't possible for us to
hope for more than a weekly video post.

The Adobe Premiere help files are pretty good, but I'm still missing
alot of
the power of the program. Do you know of any good online/interactive
 tutorials?

I think I'm getting pretty handy with Adobe Premiere Elements, but that's
a slightly different breed from Premiere. What specific problems are you
having? Maybe I can help.

 1. VlogDiva - I would like to post weekly there. My favorite entry is
'Characteristics of Bad Website Design', but believe it or not it took
me a
long time to edit that video. So I'm starting to think that I'm just
going
to read from a prompter. I spend so much time writing the script that I
dont
want to have to spend a bunch of time memorizing and editing to.

Yes. Make a makeshift prompter or otherwise hold up cue cards. I can't
tell you how many times I've had everything in my head, ready to go, and
then I press record and blow the whole thing.

2006-04-07 Thread wlight
I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to
create a credits screen. Also, you know how in their tutorial they have
an
image/frame and inside the image/frame their is footage of that family?
I
want to learn how to do that. I got so frustrated trying to do the
credits
that I gave up. I also want to learn how to separate the video and the
audio. I suppose I'll try to tackle these things now that I have the
book.If
I'm still stumped I'll let you know. But, please if you have any vital
tips,
I would love to hear them (about credits or anything else in Adobe
Premeire
 Elements).

Don't be embarassed...I'm a professional engineer and wrestled with Adobe
Premiere Elements for a while.

Creating a credit screen isn't all that hard. You use the titler to do
it. Just click the Title button right next to the Edit button. There
are a bunch of templates that they offer, but I really don't care for any
of them, so when the templates dialog pops up, I click cancel and work
with a blank title. From there, the titler comes up. You can put text on
it, import images, etc, then save the title. You can also move around on
the timeline and see what it'll look like if you overlay that title on
existing video (which I rarely do). Once you like what you have, it'll
appear as a media object in the same list as your clips, and you can drag
it to the timeline. Drag to Video 1 if you don't want it overlaying your
existing footage, or drag to video 2 to mix it with your footage.

Separating video and audio isn't hard. Once you get a clip on the
timeline, right click on the clip and you'll find an option to do this on
the popup menu that comes up.

I don't know how to do picture-in-picture yet.

[videoblogging] Re: a new member intro

2006-04-07 Thread Brook Hinton
Hi Monique,

So, you're a pro film maker?

Well I guess that depends on your definition of pro. I used to work
full time doing for-hire work shooting, editing, consulting, sound
design, etc etc etc, but that has always felt very seperate from my
artwork. Now the day job mostly teaching (I actually get paid to teach
the kinds of films I make, which still seems hard to believe!) and I'm
focusing more on my own stuff.

Did you edit those videos or just post them as you received them?

They're extremely edited, and in some cases (though not the croquet
one) also messed with in other ways. All of the footage is from an
estate which included hours of old home 16mm films dating back to the
1920's, for which I was the archivist. Everyone we were able to
identify in the footage is no longer around. I'm not trying to just
present the footage, though that would probably be a nice thing too
(and it may turn out to be appropriate for a few entries) - I'm making
found footage films out of them, sort of mini-experimental-essays on
memory, life, death, and the little moments and background things that
get lost. I've been playing with this footage for a long time, and
this just suddenly seemed like the right approach and the right place.

(I'm partly answering your comment on the site, apologies to others
for the lengthy verbiage).

[videoblogging] Re: How Much Time Do You Spend Editing?

2006-04-07 Thread hpbatman7
It varies with me, it depends on what I am vlogging, this bit I
did, Magic Eight Ball, I filmed and edited in under an hour, but I
had a really good idea in my head of how I wanted the finished
video to look, the filming probably took about 20 minutes total (with
a couple of reshoots) and the editing about 30 minutes (which
includes the time to import the video into my program) I use Sony
Vegas (the lite version, it cost me about 60 bucks) You can see
that video here. http://blip.tv/file/get/BatmanGeek-
MagicEightBall238.mov

This one took a bit longer because I went over to a friends house to
have some fun and to just show geeks as they are, I probably took
about 45 minutes of footage or so, ( I was there longer) and it did
take me about 30 minutes to edit (not including the time to import
the video) because I had more footage to go through...you can
check it out here http://blip.tv/file/get/BatmanGeek-GeekDay587.mov

I am learning NOT to film everything that makes editing a lot easier,
at least when you are doing a bit but that gets harder when you are
just videoing for the heck of it and then decide to make it a
vlog..I have found though don't be afraid to edit, as long as
the meat is there they will get it.

btw I am still learning my way around with Vegas but I really like
it.

Yes but with no control over it's parameters. They have a Convert
Selection for iPod option that just takes off and does something you
have no say on HOW. Note the missing ... at the end of the command
indicating no dialog box with options will follow.

If you use Macintosh
For ultimate control you can burn a DVD image with iDVD from mp4s and
then use Handbrake to rip them to your exactly preferred specs with
its ffmpeg 2-pass and crop encoder.

It depends on how many cuts, titles and special effects you have on
your show. When I was making a ten-minute weekly show, it took me
anywhere from 10-14 hours to edit. Last night's vlog entry only took
about 2 hours (and most of that time was spent re-watching the video
just because I was laughing so hard! Had I stuck to the work at hand,
I would have been done in less than an hour.)

I have three vlogs and I'm trying to decide how to approach them:

You've probable thought of this already, but my advice (especially
since you're making multiple shows) is to make a template that
includes all the titles and effects that you will reuse on each post.
That will take away SOME of the editing burden...

Re: [videoblogging] How Much Time Do You Spend Editing?

2006-04-07 Thread Stephanie Bryant

I use iMovie, and I reuse my outro every post.

When it's just me, talking-head-style, it takes me about 10 minutes to
edit, and half of that is importing the video to iMovie. The
Toastmaster speeches are about the same, because there's no transitions
or anything, just a straight shot, then cut.

For more complex stuff, like the CBSBettas vlog, or Hiking and Camping
with Johnnyb, it takes me a couple of hours to sift through the footage
(usually more than an hour for each vlog) and narrow it down to the 7
minutes or so that I want to post, apply transitions, etc.

If I want music, that adds a LOT of time, because I'm not up on the
creative commons scene, and therefore when I think this should have
music! the music I think of that would be perfect is usually
restricted.
I used to vlog daily. I now vlog about once a week for my personal
vlog, and just about monthly for the CBS and Johnnyb vlogs (though
they've been delayed due to book-writing).

[videoblogging] Stress level 10

2006-04-07 Thread usadutch2001
While in the middle of this insane engagement of
videobloggingweek2006 having a blast, working hard shooting footage,
watching your video's, editing, posting commenting a big added
stress factor is added in there;

My hosting providers server crashes, a raid controller corrupts data
from both mirrored disks and they need to restore from a backup last
Sunday. THIS WAS NOT FUNNY!!!

This means all my hard work is gone !!

The most valuable assets are the comments people left on my vlog,
they are gone. Of-course i recreated all my posts and upload the
content again however all earlier created tags are worthless.

Now would you be so kind to (re)-visit my vlog and tell me what you
think? I'm fairly new to vlogging and need feedback badly to enhance
my joy.

And for Steve; I did give credits for the music. :)

Thanks get those comments in, I will also try to catch-up for
yesterday.

2006-04-07 Thread Anne Walk

Hi Josh. While searching for sites for testinggrounds.loadedpun.com, I've found tons of vlogs listed in a great number of sites. They do, indeed, pick up media feeds and list them. Check out Blinkx, for example. I bet you're in there.
It's a very strange feeling to go to a community site and find your listings. These places usually have a way to get out of the listings if you find your stuff, but they have no way to prevent you from getting in there in the first place.

[videoblogging] Re: Gah!!! Blogger sucks.

2006-04-07 Thread usadutch2001
Exactly this is right on why i use my own domain-name and space. I
only use services for tagging.

However if your hosting provider has a hardware problem (see earlier
post)your tagging becomes invalid and your vlogs are gone and you
have to recreate your stuff. (See stresslevel 10)

Oh and now we talk about domains, I have a bunch of vloging domain
names for sale. Please visit http://rocketboom.us cavlogs.com would
fit you perfectly.

I don't think it's ok what they do. Transcoding video, then hosting
it, without attribution is wrong. It's a BIG step beyond, say, Google
images listing your image, because they link back to you.

Re: [videoblogging] Veoh transcoding feeds?

2006-04-07 Thread Stephanie Bryant
Veoh has my whole feed in their service. They have ripped my videos to
their formats and are re-distributing them, using their own
permalinks.

From their own TOS:
As explained above, Veoh does not permit copyright infringing
activities on the Veoh Service and reserves the right to terminate
access to the Veoh Service, and remove all User Materials posted, by
any persons who are found to be repeat infringers (i.e., persons found
to have uploaded copyright infringing User Material on more than two
occasions).

Here's the email I sent them:
Dear Veoh,

You are infringing on my license terms for Hold My Beer and Watch
This! (http://mortaine.blogspot.com).

I have a creative commons license on my videoblog. My license terms
are derivs-ok, non-commercial, and must-attribute. This means that if
you make a derivative work by ripping my videos to your format for
re-distribution, it must be for non-commercial purposes. From what I
can see, Veoh is a commercial entity. If this is not the case, please
send me your 501c status documentation.

However, you are still violating the must-attribute portion of my
videoblog's license, and that is not acceptable. You are displaying my
work on your website without attribution to the creator. Please create
a clear, unambiguous link-back to my website. Personally, I would
prefer it if you made the permalink space on your site as a permalink
to the vlog entries on my blog site. It's not as if you don't have
that data available, and doesn't seem like it would be too technically
difficult.

Failure to comply with my CC license means that you are infringing on
my copyright, something that is specifically prohibited in the Veoh
Terms of Service.

Please let me know how you are rectifying this situation.

Sincerely,
Stephanie Bryant

On 4/7/06, Halcyon Lujah [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I have been talking to Veoh about this

There are working towards a system of organizing the (quickly becoming
unmanagable) amount of video content. Part of the proicess was
indexing and presenting RSS feeds. I claimed (see below) my feed so
that I can be in charge of my Veoh comments, links, etc.Hey Halcyon, thanks for chiming in.I shouldn't have to claim a feed for my license to be respected. In order to display my material, it has to be by attribution. Veoh is not abiding by this.
I don't care if they pick up my feed, it's online for anyone to view, but to have it not linked back to me is the no-no.I've sent them 2 messages via their contact form and am awaiting a response.

Why I like Veoh: up to a 10 min. flash preview that i can embed OR
use their pre-built Vlog format: see:
http://veoh.com/vlogs/cockyvision. Its great for lazy people like
me, I can upload a full res version for tv-quality download, and let
the Veoh system worry about my web-based Vlog. (emcoding, hosting, and
rss)

**BUT IF YOU WANT TO BE EXCLUDED from their search and system, just
send them an email. [EMAIL PROTECTED]. They are aware that not everyone
wants to be included and will remove you immediately.Do you know if it is an 'all or nothing' deal? (I either have my feed there and not get attribution, or have it removed?)Why don't they simply add a link back to the originating site? It's very simple to do. FireAnt, Mefeedia, Vlogdir (sorry if I omit anyone...) do it in several places (link to comments, link to the video, etc)

TO CLAIM YOUR FEED:

If you would like to claim your feed and control how they are presented
on Veoh from your own account, please follow these instructions.

Here's how you claim your feed on Veoh:

1. Go to the series page for your vlog
2. Select the Claim Feed button.
3. You'll be asked to place a snippet of code into your vlog.
4. Once you have done that select the Verify button.

probably similar to what technorati does

if you put some html (usually a script) on your blog then they can pull
it (or your feed perhaps, usually these are in the sidebar however) and
know you really can edit it and hence it must be yours. the html also
usually displays some logo and link to the site (veoh in this case)

for my part, i don't like the idea of have to "claim" my vlog in this
way (it does not feel optional). i'd like to know if i can remove my
feed from voeh if i claim it. still don't like having to sign up even
to do that.

Along these lines, anyone got tips on converting MPEG-2 to iPod (or

This is on a PC (free or cheap solutions preferred).

Re: [videoblogging] Veoh transcoding feeds?

2006-04-07 Thread Michael Verdi

It isn't as simple as adding a link back. Most people use some version of the non-commercial cc license. If that's the case they shouldn't be allowed to host your stuff at all unless you specifically grant them that license. What you are saying with the NC license is that it is NOT okay to use this for commercial purposes (since VEOH is hosting your content on their commercial site instead of just linking to it, it's a commercial use) without first obtaining permission from the creator. They are not doing this. Providing a link back only fixes the attribution clause.

Yeah this addresses the atribution issue, what about the commercial

Devlon,

The big difference here is.. YouTube didn't directly and specifically
upload the content -- or create a specific system to scour for and grab
that content. From what I can tell, Veoh did just that, no? My users
breaking a license and me knowingly doing the same thing... big
difference, and not in a positive way.

What you are saying with the NC license is that it is NOT okay to

Re: [videoblogging] Veoh transcoding feeds?

2006-04-07 Thread Stephanie Bryant
Actually, they're outright infringing on my husband's videoblog.

For those who don't know, my husband is a VERY private person. It took
all my wheedling to get him to agree to be videotaped while hiking.
Getting him to release it under a CC license was a no-go.

So, his is cc-0, 100% copyrighted. No derivs, no usage, etc. It's on
blip, so blip gets to list and host the content, but that's it. Taking
it and attributing it-- still not OK for his.

Veoh's ripped it and posted it.

I don't want to be a meanie, but yeah. I think I'll give my lawyer
friend a call. We're working together on a vlogging law seminar-- I'm
sure he'd have fun with this one!

I agree... why should I be forced to become a member and claim my feed
by entering code into my RSS feed. I ALREADY have to do so much to
make sure my RSS feed caters to iTunes...

I personally prefer sites like MeFeedia who download the original .mov
file to their service. When people change my show to Flash, I can't
keep track of all those extra downloads in my statistics.

2006-04-07 Thread mikehudack
This sucks. I'd say more than that, but I don't want to get a
reputation for boudmouthing competitors of any sort.

I think there are a few things we can do from here.

First of all, we can ban Veoh from blip. We would do this to keep
them from scraping any more blip RSS feeds (which they're obviously
doing) and to keep them from downloading anymore blip-hosted videos.
I think we would do this if the community wants us to, but not without
some consultation. Do you guys want this?

I'm also going to discuss this with blip's lawyers to see if there's
anything we can do. If any blip users have had their content stolen
by Veoh please drop me a private e-mail (mike AT blip DOT tv) and I'll
look into whether we can give you a hand with some legal measures.

Yours,

Mike

It isn't as simple as adding a link back. Most people use some version of the non-commercial cc license. If that's the case they shouldn't be allowed to host your stuff at all unless you specifically grant them that license. What you are saying with the NC license is that it is NOT okay to use this for commercial purposes (since VEOH is hosting your content on their commercial site instead of just linking to it, it's a commercial use) without first obtaining permission from the creator. They are not doing this. Providing a link back only fixes the attribution clause.

As a suggestion, I reccomend that anyone using FeedBurner for their

Hello,I know many people probably won't like hearing this, butI don't know if it is possible to have people subscribe to your feed and not have other site's aggregate and redistribute your feed without your control.
(And let me point out that I am NOT trying to justify any of this.
I'm just trying to explain current attitudes with members of Internet society.)To many many many people, if you create an RSS or Atom people, then you are implicitly giving people permission to do all sort of things with it. It's the way things have been for a very very long time. And this permission included aggregating and redistributing. (And I know many people don't like this. But I'm NOT trying to justify this. I'm only trying to explain the attitude of current Internet society.)
This is akin to someone creating a website, posting the URL to the website in public places. And then complaining when people bookmark their site. Or post their own URLs to the site.(Again, let me point out that I am NOT trying to justify any of this. I'm just trying to explain current attitudes with Internet society.)
Now granted, they should be talking about where the content came from. They can even use standard HTML elements to do this with: cite, blockquote, q, and a. (Or they could use other semantic HTML.)

Re: [videoblogging] Veoh transcoding feeds?

2006-04-07 Thread Charles Iliya Krempeaux

Hello,I think part of the problem is that there is no automated way for machines/software to understand licenses. RSS, Atom, HTML, and HTTP makes no requirement for machines/software to obey licenses.
Many people argue that by making your data available in these formats and protocols that you are implicitly giving people permission to do all sorts of things. (And if you don't want people to do these things, then you should be using the HTTP authentication -- usernames and passwords -- that the HTTP protocol provides.)
I think if something like this is wanted, it would have to codified in the Feed. Probably those who want license restrictions would do this by stopping use of the RSS enclosure and make up and use a replacement for this that would bind license instructions in it.
(This probably isn't what people want to hear though.)See yaOn 4/7/06, Michael Verdi
