When serving a web page, we get an error that involves the
fetching and display of a document to the browser. Evidently,
it's choking on some unicode bytes when it's expecting plain
ascii.

I'm not sure if I understand your problem right.
First of all what do you mean with 'Fir-class'?Is it a ZClass or a
usual Zope-Folder.I suppose a Zope-Folder!.
You have to call the method "manage_changeProperties" on an Object.

No, that's the problem. The icon isn't a broken box, but a regular
product icon. Clicking on the link shows that there's one item in
TinyTablesPlus, a Help document; when I open that, it tells me that
there are no items in TinyTablesPlus. So Zope seems to be seeing the
product, but not adding
Go to the Control Panel and click on Products. The TinyTable product is probably going
to have a little "broken box"-icon.
Click on it and wish that it will tell you the error so that you can fix it.

Not directly.
Almost surely, your "index_html" is a DTML document.
