John, I offer my heartfelt condolences. Yo did the right thing. It’s rarely on
our terms that our pets have to leave us. It seems unfair that their lives as
intertwined with ours, can be so short comparatively. It’s special that you
loved and cared for Baxter. I’m praying that you will be comforted in grieving
the loss of your loved one.

I had to take Baxter to the vet tonight. She was 21 years old and was barely
eating. I managed to coax a bit of food into her the last week by puréeing
chicken breast & chicken broth in a blender.

But today she wouldn't even eat that.

Then when she jumped out of my lap this evening she couldn't walk, couldn't
stand up.

The vet said she had severe kidney failure and could probably live another week
with three days of IV fluids and if I'd learn how to give her subcutaneous
fluids at home. But even with that massive intervention, she wasn't going to
last much longer.

I was afraid she was going to suffer too much so I had her euthanized. It was
time. I wasn't ready & I didn't want to, but it was the best thing for Baxter.

Thanks Rick.
A stack of thick slices is actually a good description.
Instead of instructing the software to stack all the single exposures in
one go, it is instructed to stack them in groups of say, 15. Then when
it's done, the groups (slabs) are stacked again to produce the final result.
It's a technique to get better results from deep stacks.

Actually, I am having hard time finding where the focus is. Either it is

with the lens).
There is also a possibility that it is overcompressed with JPEG

Special thanks again to Mark and Christine for their huge part in

Ann, Tom C, Will Robb and I went out for pizza at Pizzaria Uno after

The Eggelston exhibit on Saturday was interesting. Much of it had me
scratching my head, but there were a handful of prints that I thought
were really superb.
I had a great time and was very glad to have been able to make the

But especially, there was the gallery opening for the PDML Show.

So, I got to Chicago latish Thursday evening.
The escape from Canada flight was on was on a scale model of a very
small

cattle car that had jet powered wings.
And, the buggers busted me for having too much toothpaste.
But, I had no seatmate, so it was all good.
The flight to Chicago was on a somewhat larger version of the same
thing,
but my seatmate was a relatively small woman who was quite
decorative and
friendly, and I had bought some 10 cent per ml Crest, so that was
fine as

well.
When I debarked, Tom phoned and told me he was right outside.
The seatmate led me through the terminal and off she went, and a few
moments

later I was in the passenger seat of Tom's Renta-A-Toyota.
After checking out our room on the 27th floor of the downtown
Sheraton Posh

Hotel, we found a little bar and had a nice meal and drinks.
I believe we closed the place.
And then sat up until 4:00 catching up on stuff.
The very next morning after too few hours sleep, we went for a walk.
We found a very busy but efficient breakfast place called the West
Egg Cafe

where we had a very nice breakfast.
And Tom, I think you have to admit it was the best breakfast we had,
no

matter what you thought at the time.
And we found a very big lake.
And we found Navy Pier.
We found all sorts of cool stuff, and then we found Harry Carey's,
and we

stopped for lunch.
I think we both had the Blackened Tenderloin.
It was quite wonderful, and washed down nicely with a nice ale.
And we walked some more, and then went back to the hotel.
It was a good day, and I would have been quite satisfied to call it a
success on many levels, but there was still more to come.
For this was the noght of the PDML SHow opening.
And off we went.
Finding a liquor vendor along the way was a good thing to do, so we
laid in

a supply od whiskey and wine for laters, and to the gallery we went.
It was quite fun. I met a whole bunch of PDML members who also came
to the

show, and I also got to meet Sue, the curator of the gallery.
The show is well worth seeing. I had seen all of the pictures on the
web,
but nothing prepared me for the splendour that was hung ont he walls
of the

Scharpenberg Gallery.

Will,
It was a pleasure to meet and hang out with you, Tom and Ann after the
opening. The pizza was well worth the wait and the company wasn't too
shabby either :)
I'm glad you were able to make the trip down from the great northern

Tim,
It was a pleasure to meet you and your wife in Chicago.
I hear you on the time limitation to shoot there, I need to go back
for about five more days.
Very nice images presented in this gallery. My two top picks are the
Hancock Tower view down and the scene underneath the L.

Doug,
I had a great time meeting and spending time with you and the other
PDML'ers !
Great gallery presented here with some very nice compositions with
tons of interest. A few standouts for me are:
#7 - brilliantly executed with the transparency and framing of the
statues. Very mysterious.
#8 - love the framing in this one and the crop of the painting on the
left is perfect!
#14 - very cool view of the L. Almost like its disintegrating into the
light.

#20 - great play of forms, reflections and colors
#17 - this one is my favorite; shapes, colors, textures and light are
all working together very nicely!

I'm really looking forward to some more of your images from this great
town.

Take care buddy.

2008-12-19 Thread Jay Taylor

On Dec 19, 2008, at 7:50 AM, Marc Roberts wrote:

Short version: I tried it and I like it.

Long version: I'm accustomed to printing from Photoshop, so I don't
know

why I decided to have a go from Lightroom yesterday, but I did. What's
more, I left the image in ProPhoto RGB color space and it came out
looking great. In the past I've always has problems printing images in
ProPhoto RGB color space from Photoshop and ended up converting
them to

Adobe RGB or sRGB for printing. I have no idea why this should be: I
always turn off color management in the printer driver and turn it
on in
Photoshop and select the proper paper/ink profile, but I never get
good
looking prints that way from Photoshop if the original image is
ProPhoto

RGB. Perhaps the algorithms for re-mapping between color spaces are
better in Lightroom because I followed the same procedure and got a
great looking print on the first try.

The only down side is that I can't use Focus Magic on images in
Lightroom - I have to export a PSD or JPEG, apply Focus Magic, re-
import

into Lightroom and then print. Fortunately the sharpening capabilities
of Lightroom are good enough that this will only be an issue for large
fine art prints or a few select photos.

Marc,
If you select Edit in Photoshop and then in PS save your changes the
edited file is linked back to Lightroom.
Now if you can use Focus Magic while still retaining the .psd format
your sharpening edit will also be retained in Lightroom as long as
you don't break the link by saving the file as another name. In
Lightroom you'll see OrignalFile.img (for example) and OriginalFile-
Edit.psd. You can print directly from the later.
Lightroom printing is awesome especially using the profiles for your
particular printer paper.

FS Friday: 1.7X Adapter

I selling my used but good condition (7 of 10) Pentax A F1.7x
adapter. This highly sought after lens accessory doesn't see much use
from me any longer since I have obtained my super telephoto lens. I
works wondors on the manual focus lenses giving them AF capability in
additon to the 1.7x magnification. Matched with the sharp primes and
zooms like the FA*300/4.5 or the FA* 80-200/2.8, it provides
excellent image quality unexpected from that of a normal teleconverter.
The front element has a small mark in the SMC coating that does not
affect image quality.

I'm also pondering selling several other FA* lenses including the
FA*24/2, FA*300/4.5, FA 77/1.8 Ltd. FA 43/1.9 -please drop me a
note if interested in any of these.

Price is $269 plus shipped and Paypal'd to verified CONUS addresses.
Will ship to other locations at buyers expense.
Please send me email if interested.

I'm a bit of a tinkerer, and I've roughly sketched up a collar design
with a thought to making one when I have some time. However, I was
recently doing some wandering around eBay when I noticed several cheap
tripod mount collars for use with various Canon lenses:

 http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Tripod-Mount-Ring-for-
 Canon-70-200mm-300-400mm-Lens-
 L7G_W0QQitemZ130167704305QQihZ003QQcategoryZ29982QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrd
 Z1QQcmdZViewItem
 http://preview.tinyurl.com/2bueks

These units seem to lack the ability to rotate the lens from portrait
to landscape within the ring. Not really what I wanted.

This got me Googling though, I found some info on the genuine Canon
Tripod Mount Ring A II, for use with the EF 70-200 IS f4L , which has
 this function:

 http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-Tripod-Mount-Ring-
 A-II-Review.aspx
 http://preview.tinyurl.com/2gbbyx

Now from what I've managed to find, the inside diameter of this ring
is ~66mm. As luck would have it, the outside diameter of the FA* 300mm
f4.5 barrel is 66mm (Although the lens name plate does project out a
 couple of millimetres)

So my question: Has anyone here ever tried to use these two pieces of
kit together? Can any of our Canon owners confirm that it actually
 works as described.

 Cheers TIA,

 Dave

I have the Canon 400/5.6 prime with similar foot and it is a very
tight fit around the FA*300/4.5 and can only go on slipped over the
end of the lens which they are not designed to do. They have a
latching clasp clamp ring that is supposed to fit around the lens,
clasp shut and then secured with a locking knob. Maybe the tripod
rings for the 70-200/4's are a bit bigger than this one on my
400/5.6, if so they probably work.
I might venture down to my local Canon dealer to see for myself.
That is if they'll let me remove one to see if it fits the Pentax.

http://i.pbase.com/
o6/87/63987/1/81261177.gmwcxIHL.PieBilledGrebe1062407.jpg

Even with the long zoom (FA*250-600/5.6) I found I had to be pretty
stealthy to get into a position to make a few capture of these
skittish birds.
Since it was an overcast day I figured I'd better take Joe's advice
and use the tripod. Seems like the results are quite a bit better
than hand holding the huge lens; at least in less than optimal
lighting conditions. Captured with the K10D, processed in Lightroom
and CS3. Comments critique welcome as always.

Re: PESO - Rail Bird

2007-05-07 Thread Jay Taylor
Ken,
Nice shot, you might try cropping out the the bottom of the frame
with the crack in the rail (somewhat distracting). But that might
make the frame quite a bit tighter than you liking since you'd need
to crop the right side as well.
I did a quickie resize of my window to see what it would look like.
It does push the bird perhaps too far to the right.

I've been trying to see just how difficult it would be to handhold

Paul,
I like the idea of completing the wing (although cheating a bit) for
a nicer composition. Yes, I believe I did have my settings on a half
stop under and the noise is pretty much visible only on the full size
image. I process my RAW files with Bibblelite, but hate to use the

Nice shot. I would draw in the tip of that left wing and add some
background water above it. You could clone the feather ends from
other places on the bird. If an ISO 400 shot is underexposed by a
stop or so, you'll get noise. Otherwise, they always look pretty
clean to me. Can't tell if this shot is noisy. It looks good at web
 size.

And as someone else hinted a vertical orientation, I thought I'd try

PEOW:Tribute/Farwell to Mom

2007-04-02 Thread Jay Taylor
PDML'rs,
Definitely a great deal of sadness here with the Taylor family as we
prepare to bid farewell to my Mom.
She would be 88 years old on April 20th, but we are all but certain
that she will not be able to celebrate this years birthday. Unable to
recover from a colonectomy surgery performed in February coupled with
Aortic Stenosis, her condition has continued to deteriorate over the
past several weeks.
She had not been eating and drinking enough to sustain herself and
was back in the hospital within a couple weeks after surgery for
dehydration. With her fluids stabilized the hospital had informed us
that they pretty much had done all they could do for her short of
inserting a feeding tube which she would not want nor allow. The best
thing that we could do for her is bring her home to be comfortable
with hospice care.
Fortunately, we had just bought a new house last summer with a
Mother-in-Law unit in the downstairs portion where my mom and
brother were able to move in with us. So, the three of us have been
caring for her (my wife works from home) since her discharge about
six weeks ago.
At first we were hopeful that being back at home would give her the
motivation and comfort to have better chance of recovery. She had
been eating a little more and drinking Ensure protein drinks regularly.
But she was still not taking in enough nutrients to sustain herself.
It seemed that she had just lost all interest in food altogether
except for maybe chocolates and a few select fruits. At first she was
walking around OK even by herself with the help of the walker. But
the last couple weeks she's gotten progressively worse to the point
where we could no longer even take her to the bathroom via wheelchair
because she started passing out from just sitting on the commode.
These past few days have been very difficult for all of us knowing
that she does not have much time left here with us. Though we do have
comfort in knowing that as a true disciple and saint of our Lord
Jesus and that a very special place in heaven awaits her.
She is truly a very special person. Loved by many who know her and
even those who've only had a chance to meet. You see, she is a very
loving and humble human being. I can never remember her saying a
negative or cruel thing about any single person in her life. She is
one of the most self-less persons I have ever known. Always willing
to forsake her needs for those of her children and grandchildren and
even people she didn't know very well at all. She has taught me so
much about life by the example that she lived each and every day; the
most important of which is Love. But if it hadn't been for her taking
me to church as a young boy and teaching me about Jesus I don't
think I'd be here to this day. I could have easily ended up like
many of my peers in jails, institutions or dead.
It' really hard at the moment to really reflect on just how much she
really means to me. I remain hopeful of better days ahead. Here is a
photo I took of us shortly after her surgery:
http://i.pbase.com/o6/87/63987/1/76532119.31qAeDgY.IMGP0707.jpg
If you are so inclined, please pray that her passing will be
comforted by the Creator and those who love her.

Thank you,
John James Taylor, Jr. (aka JayT)

Mega-Enablement: FA*250-600/5.6

2007-03-24 Thread Jay Taylor
Well, I finally have been able to secure a nice long Pentax telephoto
lens. The FA*250-600mm/f5.6 zoom!
I had been dreaming about the FA*600/4 ever since I started shooting
birds, but a good guy who lives in my region just happened to put
this fine lens up for sale since he wasn't shooting with it very much
and was transitioning to Canon gear. Even though a pretty reliable
source indicated to me that this lens is not exceptional on digital
bodies I couldn't pass up on the opportunity. I was able to try it
out for about 10 days while the owner was out of the country, but the
weather here for the most part was pretty crappy and I was too scared
to take it anywhere outside of my home to shoot with it since I
wasn't sure If I was going to purchase it.
I decided that I might as well go for it and if it didn't work out I
could always sell it. Even though f5.6 is not as fast as I would
prefer and a zoom would not be as sharp as a prime, I figured the
flexibility of having the wide zoom range could come in handy and the
chances of finding a used 600/f4 in my price range would be pretty slim.
Anyhow, here is one of the first few images from it and the K10D when
we had a little bit of decent light:

http://i.pbase.com/o6/87/63987/1/75415076.oCor9YTy.IMGP0850.jpg

Oh yeah, this puppy is pretty heavy. I'm hoping my tripod (Benro
1327) is stout enough as well as the Wimberley Sidekick without
having to go to the full Wimberley head.
I'm really looking forward to getting out in the field with this baby.

 Hello, Jay ...

I almost stopped the download of your file, but I was into it quite
 a bit
and decided to wait until it loaded completely. There's no reason
 or need
to post an 825K file fore a web image. Many viewers are on slow,
 dial-up
connections, and the wait to see a file of so great a size can be
 quite
long. Had I tried to download this during a time when Internet
 traffic was
heavier, I would have stopped the download.

When I first saw the bird's eyes I was thinking that this was going
 to be
something special, and really worth the wait. But, alas, it turns
 out that
DOF is too shallow, and apart from the eyes and an area around the
 top of
the beak, much of the bird is not in sharp focus. The tip of the
 beak is
not sharp, nor is the neck and feathers, both areas which seem
 important
(at least to me) in a shot such as this.

I really like your subtle sig in the lower right corner.

Jay, for the most part I really like your work, but you continually
 post
very large-sized images that sometimes make it too time consuming
 for me -
and I know others - to enjoy viewing.

PEOW:My Baby and Her Baby

2006-05-15 Thread Jay Taylor
Been away from posting on the list lately. Still following some
though. My youngest daughter came over to cook dinner for her Mom
on Mothers Day. Here is shot of here and her new puppy Baby .
Taken with the *istDS and the FA*50 f/1.4. Would have been a better
shot with maybe a telephoto to blur the background a bit more. But oh
well, sometimes you just have to settle for what you get.

Comments always helpful. Thanks for looking.

Re: long lens for birds?

2006-04-18 Thread Jay Taylor

Russell,
Not that I have any expertise whatsoever on the subject of wildlife
photography, but I'd say also that primes are definitely the way to
go. And you will always want more reach than you have. Seems like
in order to get really close for those frame filling shots that
shooting from a blind produces the best results. Especially with the
more skittish species.
At least with the Pentax equipment that doesn't have image
stabilization built in.

I have been very satisfied with a relatively new enablement in the
Tokina AT-X 400mm f5.6. This is the same lens that Bruce and a few
others here also have. It is light and small for a 400mm prime; very
hand-holdable on bright days. I haven't taken a lot of time yet to
see how it works with a 1.4X teleconverter for extra reach. Here is
a recent shot grabbed in my front yard:

http://i.pbase.com/o4/87/63987/1/58830040.YardBird.jpg

Too bad they discontinued this lens. I too would be tempted to get
another if it came up available. I don't think however that the lens
mentioned by William as going for $40.00 on eBay is the same. There
is another version (manual) by Tokina; the SL I beleive, but it is
not the same or even close in quality to the AT-X SD version.

Good luck with your search,

JayT

PEOW: Layered View

2006-04-11 Thread Jay Taylor
Was looking at some images from last fall and this one for some
reason stuck with me. It was taken with the cheap version of the
Pentax 80-200 zoom lens along with the 1.7X Adapter. I think I'll try
to return this year for a re-shoot, but with nicer glass and
hopefully better light this time. RAW image processed in BibbleLite
OSX, resized for web view in Photoshop CS.

Let me know what you think about the image. Thanks.

Major Enablement: FA*300 f4.5

2006-03-30 Thread Jay Taylor

At least to me it is major!
I've bee reading about all over for this great lens. After losing
out on one in an eBay auction a few months back by being too cheap to
bid a decent price for it, I was really wanting very badly to add
this one to my collection. Finally, I decided that I would pull the
trigger on an as brand new condition one that I had known of a
source for some time, but didn't want to pay the big dollars. I ended
up paying probably too much for it, but considering what some of the
prices have been lately for fine Pentax glass, I figured that for an
excellent copy of this lens it would be money well spent. Now I see
for myself what the hype is all about. The only complaint I have with
it is the lack of a tripod collar. Here if one of my first images
with the lens taken with my *istDS:

My Grandson Again - Tokina 400 BW Conversion

2006-03-02 Thread Jay Taylor
Here is another shot of my lil' man Darius on a recent outing. The
boy seems to take after his grandpa in the sense that he seems to
love being outdoors. I look foward to future hikes, camping, fishing
and just being out with him enjoying nature. I'm glad we won't be too
to enjoy activities with him when he starts to become a young man. He
is definitely a blessing in our lives.
This is an attempt at a new (for me) monochrome conversion with
Photoshop CS using multiple layers. The image was initially a RAW
converted via BibbleLite 4.6 on Mac OSX. I like the range of control
one has over the process using the layers method. Anyhow, comments
critique always helpful. Thanks for looking.

There is another available in Germany for approx 5 times the price

Peter,

I saw that too and had a chance to pull the trigger, but hesitated
much too long thinking about shipping costs an the internal dust as
described.
I wonder who the winner (theobserver) is. Seems I've come across his

I am still kicking myself over this one. It even had a 1.4X-S

Re: PESO - Waiting....

2006-02-22 Thread Jay Taylor

Bruce,
Can't say much more positively than what's been said already; I
really like this image. Composition as well as color are very
apealling. I do have a couple questions though. What time of day and
was it overcast? The birds appear to be resting or maybe even
napping? Almost appears as if your presence did not bother them at all.

Keep up the great work and thanks for helping us newbies with vision.
