So...opened the trunk for the first time this morning (now that I got the

large chain guide (new) and a stack of owners/maintenance manuals. Looks
like this car started its life in Santa Cruz, CA (first owners Joshua and
Eliza Baer). Pretty impeccable service records kept until 79K miles
(5/1983) all performed at a place called Bergstorm Motor Co in Santa Cruz.
Then there is a big gap until 8/31/87 when an original MERCEDES BENZ
exchange engine was installed. It has the mileage listed at 149,028. The
odometer shows 375K right now (but it is no working, of course).
Interesting.
So today I changed the oil and did the front brakes. When I was retracting
the inside piston on the drivers side, I got a few drips of brake fluid
out. So, can these calipers be rebuilt?

Next day off will be rebuilding calipers (if possible), renew brake fluid,
flush/fill coolant, exhaust donuts, manual transmission fluid renew (if I
can get the fill plug out), and the rear diff (ditto fill plug).

What else should be done to establish a baseline for this car? Also, is it
creepy to try to contact the former owners of this car?

Re: [MBZ] Flying Experiences was Lost again? Test

Back in 1980 I was working for a company out of Pearland, Tx.
Four days prior to this I had just taken delivery of our 4th and last
Sikorsky S-76.
And flown it from the Sikorsky Delivery facility in West Palm Beach to
Pearland.
During the flight from NEW to Pear George (Auto Pilot) would kick off
line.
Reported Problem to maint. They fixed George so Chief Pilot and myself
took it for a
shakedown flight. We decide to shoot the ILS @ HOU (Houston Hobby) with
George

doing the flying. Contacted HOU Approach and requested the approach.
They sandwich us in between 2 Continental DC9's.
#2 Decides that He didn't want a Lowly helicopter in front of him on
His approach

and tells Approach the fact. Here's the Dialog between them.
Cont: Hobby Approach Cont.
HOU: Cont Hobby
Cont: Understand there is a Helicopter ahead of us?
HOU: Roger that
Cont: Request that Helicopter be rerouted so he's behind us. Don't want
to have

to shoot a Go Around because of him.
Hou: Cont That won't be a problem. In fact your company better get
the lead out

I have him at 130 Kts and the Helio at 145.
Cont: WHAT!!!
We had George coupled to the ILS and had about 90% torque applied.
Cont # 1 landed as we hit the Middle Marker.
I requested a low pass instead of our regular break off at the Inner Marker.
Hobby Twr says Go for It. Set George to level out at 50'.
As we went down the the Runway at 140 kts Cont #1, who was taxing to the
term

was hear to say WHAT in the Hell kind was that
Twr reply was A FAST ONE.
Chief Pilot and I were laughing our head off.
Never had any problems for the Airline Drivers at Hobby again.

Would love any ideas you can give me on the issue I'm having on my

fairly badly. The injectors have been replaced, the spark plugs and
wires have been replaced, the heads were recently reworked with a
valve grind, all new engine gaskets, and the Idle Air Control
Valve(IACV) was recently replaced as well. It idles well, but
misfires as soon as a load is placed on the engine, any load at all.
The less the acceleration, the less the misfire, and vice versa. It
is very bad when accelerating in a high gear at low engine rpm. The
shop diagnosed misfires on multiple cylinders, and recommended I
change the injectors and plugs, which I did, and of course it didn't
solve it. I will talk with the shop tomorrow, that's another issue.

Ran a compression check today on all cylinders, the numbers were quite
good, all in the 180-205 psi range, and the minimum for this engine is
100 psi. Suspected the Catalytic Converter of a possible blockage, so
I removed the exhaust pipes at the manifolds and test drove, still
misfiring as usual.

Would love any ideas you have, sir! Thank you.

I use Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets to remove Love Bugs.
Wet the bug infected area and the sheet start wiping.
It will take some elbow grease to get the one that are
baked on but they will come off and it's safe on paint and wax.
I also treat my windshield with Rainex it keeps the little buggers from
sticking. Some ppl around here use Pam Cooking spray on the nose of
the car to prevent them from sticking. A friend of mine tried it

Is hydrogen peroxide a suitable and effective disinfectant for the kitchen?
There are any number of publications that tout this substance as effective for
this purpose.
Since I have no independent knowledge in this area, can I rely on what I read?
I have asked several pharmacists for their opinion, and the responses vary from yes to
no to It was not intended for that purpose.
I have used it, but as I pour it out of the bottle and wipe it on, say, a countertop used
to slice up raw chicken, it doesn't have that convincing feeling that I am really killing
dangerous microbes. It feels like I am using just water. I want the feeling of
cleanliness that a bottle of a commercial antibacterial kitchen cleanser has.
However, why pay $4 if a 50 cent bottle of hydrogen peroxide is just as good at killing
the nasty stuff?

I don't want to offend anyone by being off topic. So here is the official
question: Does hydrogen peroxide effectively kill the germs left on my M-B steering

have to touch when I drive, especially when I am eating in the car. Then there's the

Re: [MBZ] Very Aggravating BS

2012-04-09 Thread Russ Williams

Not quite true.
Sales tax is paid to the State thru the Local Sheriff Dept who is the
tax collector

for the state and Parish.
If you buy a vech. in Miss or Ark and paid taxes there you only pay the
difference

in taxes if your local taxes is more.
If you buy a vech in Texas and tell them you are going to Reg it in
another state

They will let you skip paying the sales tax. I've done this twice.
You can go to the DMV and get a La Temp tag if you are going to buy a
car out of state.
Only need the VIN and Sellers Name and Proof of Ins card. But there is a
caveat to doing that.
It's good for 30 days only. Normally Temp tags from a dealer is good for
90 days.
When you move to La you have 30 days to Reg your vechs and obtain an La
Drivers License.
You pay taxes according the Blue Book value. Reg fee is 75 bucks tag fee
vary depending on

how old the vech is. The fee for my 84 300D is 20 bucks for 2 years.

OK this seems like too much to believe so I did 2 minutes of research
(so I may be wrong, but what I found at least sounds believable):

Massachusetts does not recognize out of state temporary plates
issued to a Massachusetts resident as legal.

Massachusetts does not issue temporary plates for its own residents
but it does recognize legally issued temporary plates on out of
state vehicles.

So if I am a MA resident the state will not recognize another state's
temporary plate on a car I bought. However if I as an Indiana resident
I buy a car here and have a proper temporary registration then I can
drive it in/through MA legally.

spring so I can't get it out, maybe only a half inch or so. I try to
turn it back to tighten it to put it back in the car to compress it a
bit and hold it compressed, to rotate the plates some to get some
slack (they are interlocked top and bottom now with the teeth on both
ends locked in the pockets on the plates, so the whole thing rotates),
and I run into this feature :

Advantage :Newly developed automatic 3-point safety interlock and
***automatic freewheel

   at end of stroke.***

Which means the screw will not engage the bottom part now, and I
cannot recompress it to put it back in the car. SH*T!!!

So I am pondering how to get it compressed enough to rotate the plates
around a bit to get the thing out. I am thinking to stick it under
the car frame and then drop the whole car down enough to compress it a
bit (I think I only need a 1/4 or 1/2 or so but I am also thinking
that is dangerous as hell and really do not want to mess up my day.
Or maybe use the floor jack (which has a round pocket on the lift arm)
to put it under the car and push it up a tad. Or if I should go to
oreilly's and borrow one of their cheapo compressors, use that just
enough to get some slack on the system. There is probably not a whole
lot of compression on it at this point, maybe a coupla hundred pounds
if that, but still enough to make a problem if it decides to go for a
walk. Or maybe if they have a press we can push it enough to release
a plate so I can rotate it out and re-engage the screw.

Ideas? I was hoping to get this job done this weekend, mostly (gotta
go to a shop to get BJs pressed) but not if I am running all over
creation to deal with this stupid thing.

Any thoughts? Do I plan to be calling Rusty for a starter? TIA all,

Re: [MBZ] OT: compaq/hp won't boot

2012-01-01 Thread Russ Williams

Allan,

I worked on the same model last week with the same problem.
The processor has been overheated. This is a problem with the Compaq's
that has the Athlon processor. CPU cooling fan and heatsink get clogged up
with dust air flow drops processor temp climbs and eventually the processor
overheats and dies.
I swapped out the Processor with one I had salvaged from a system that
had a bad
motherboard, due to owner dropping a screwdriver on the board while it
was running.
New processor did the trick. System booted right up customer happy and
my pocket

book was happy.

- When connecting power cord, all fans (fan on CPU heat sink, power

full speed. Power light comes on, keyboard LEDs flash, but nothing on
   the monitor.

- If I hold down the power switch, it turns off after a few seconds.

- If I turn it back on, same as above. All fans running, no other real
   signs of life.

The fan on the back of the case is a bit noisy. I tried unplugging it

He's lucky. I had a co-worker who had an Olds with the converted Diesel 350.
He ran out of fuel about a half of mile from our heliport, Rather than
walking to our hanger
and getting a gal of JP4 he poured about 2 gal of gas he had in a can
in the trunk (it was for the base mower). Cranked up the Olds put it in
gear and started to accelerate. BIG Kaboom ensued.
I was on the flight line doing a preflight and heard it. About 10 min
later he comes walking up to
get help to tow the car to the base. Right hand head had blown off and
put a dent in the hood.
GM had just replaced the under warranty. That was one of GM's stupid
ideas that gave diesels a bad name.

I have never noticed light pipes in the 123 cluster, but it has been
10+ years since I had one out. The 124 and 126 use fiber optics to
move light around.

On 110 and 111, I have turned the light down sometimes, but they were
always well lit. The 123 is barely lit enough at best. With one
light out, you can barely read the speedo, and you have to pull out a
flashlight to read the fuel gauge.

On 124 and 126, I leave the light turned up, but always is adequate.

They failed due to 3 reasons.
They were all Diesel powered so most ran out of fuel. Tanks went dry.
Tanks were located in as low spot. when water went over the berm tanks
floated away.
And the Big reason was the pumps did not have CFM capacity that was
needed and

Pump generators were flooded.
I worked in the 9th ward after and we found 2 of the tanks about 3 miles
away from
the pump station they belonged. one was still half full of diesel. I was
able to salvage

about 30 gal out of it.

Re: [MBZ] exhaust work

2011-09-20 Thread Russ Williams

Goo Gone should get the shipping tag off. Let it soak for 30min or more.
Detergent won't touch the glue on it.
I'd use Hi Temp paint. Reg Rustoleum will burn off real quick.

I pulled the exhaust off my W116 tonight. Everything unbolted easily
despite the rusty condition of the pipe itself (heavily rusted

tap the junction at the turbo flex fitting but that popped off pretty
easily as well.

I ordered a new exhaust from Rusty, which arrived a few days ago.
Expensive, but really nice stuff. It was shipped without packaging,
just some foam wrap zip-tied around the pipe ends. So there are
shipping stickers stuck on all over the place, as well as MB inventory
stickers, which I'd like to remove before installing. The MB tags peel
off pretty easily, but the shipping labels are stuck on pretty well.
Does that Goo-Gone stuff work for that sort of thing? I'd like
something that won't disolve the paint. Maybe just soak with detergent
and use a plastic blade to scrape?

Speaking of the paint, there are a few scratches here and there,
presumably occurred in shipping and handling. I'd like to fill those
in. I'm wondering if I should use hi-temp paint or just something like
regular Rustoleum?

Mercedes thermostats are double-acting valves: they open up one passage

radiator).

If you don't do both, circulation will not flow correctly.

Wedging open a thermostat is the only correct way to do it. I think Jim

cheap emachine deal. I have the system less the hard drive from my
system before, its a big server type case but I suppose I could put a
new board in it and use that system. Only thing though is I am not
sure the power supply has the proper connection for those new style
(sata?) hard drives.

Hi Donald,

I would use Premium fuel only and Mid Grade in a pinch.
Sure the computer will compensate for the lower octane but fuel mileage
and performance WILL suffer.

If you want to ask an expert go here:

Ask Louis the question he will give you the correct skinny on it.
Or you can call him tomorrow @ 225-499-9526 between 10 and 11 AM CDT

I've known Louis for 20+ years and believe me he knows his stuff.
But he doesn't work on Merc's or Bimmers he sends them to my Indie.

Not that I want to start a premium fuel thread (or maybe I do! :) ), but do they really
require premium? My indy was very upset with me when I told him I always put Premium in
the E320. He said the car doesn't need it. I told him the owner's manual says it needs
it, Mercedes says it needs it and the fuel filler door says premium only. He says that
the car is equipped with a knock sensor and is you use 87, the computer will compensate
for the lower grade and it will run just fine. I know he is correct that the car has a
knock sensor and probably the computer will compensate, but is that really desireable? I
mean, if it was designed to run on premium do we really want to have the computer
compensating and lowering performance? Is it really designed to run on
premium? In other words, is there some detrimental effect on the car running 87 all the
time and having the performance affected? (by the way, I think I just used both effect
and affect correctly in a sentence - b!
  ut not sure).

My BMW manual says that 91 should be used. But, it specifically says that the
computer will compensate for lower octane, but not to go below 87.

We adopted a baby back in March. He was born March 27th and he is happy and

But, we have been home since mid april and he is doing great. His name is
Henry Richard Atticus Snook. The crazy thing is we had no idea about him until
the day he was born.

A month before, we sold our house and had purchased another one. We were
supposed to close March 29th on both of them. On the afternoon of the 27th as
we were moving our stuff, our lawyer called and said, there is a baby in Iowa
being born today and we sent your profile. The following morning, he called
and said, they picked you and you have to come to Iowa NOW! We hadn't even
finished moving and were supposed to close the next day. My in laws finished
moving us, and we went to Iowa! Many more details to the story. But, suffice

Re: [MBZ] Speed

2011-06-05 Thread Russ Williams
The SR-71 leaked like a sieve on the ground. From the SR-71's Wikipedia
site.

 Fuel

Development began with using a coal slurry powerplant,^[20]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_SR-71_Blackbird#cite_note-johnson_bio-21
but Johnson determined that the coal particles damaged engine
components. He then began researching a liquid hydrogen
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_hydrogen powerplant, but the tanks
required to store cryogenic hydrogen
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryogenic_fuel did not suit the
Blackbird's size and shape.^[20]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_SR-71_Blackbird#cite_note-johnson_bio-21

The focus then became somewhat more conventional, though still
specialized in many ways. The result was JP-7
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JP-7 jet fuel, which had a relatively
high flash point http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_point (140 °F, 60
°C) to cope with the heat. The fuel was used as a coolant
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coolant and hydraulic fluid
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydraulic_fluid in the aircraft before
being burned. The fuel contained fluorocarbons
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluorocarbons to increase its lubricity,
an oxidizing agent http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxidizing_agent to
enable it to burn in the engines, and even a cesium
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cesium compound, A-50, which disguised
the exhaust's radar signature.

JP-7 is very slippery, a disadvantage on the ground, because the
aircraft leaked small amounts of fuel when not flying. However, JP-7 was
not a fire hazard.

The fuel is also extremely difficult to light in any conventional way.
When the engines were started, puffs of triethylborane
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triethylborane (TEB), which ignites on
contact with air http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrophoricity, were
injected into the engines to produce temperatures high enough to ignite
the JP-7. The TEB produced a characteristic puff of greenish flame that
could often be seen as the engines were ignited.^[21]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_SR-71_Blackbird#cite_note-Shul-22 TEB
was also used to ignite the afterburners
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afterburner. The aircraft carried 20
fluid ounces (600 ml) of TEB per engine, enough for at least 16
injections (a counter told the pilot how many TEB injections remained),
more than enough for any missions it was likely to carry out.

Another amazing work of Kelly Johnson and the Skunk Works.

What was their service ceiling?
I remember my visit to the air museum there at Boeing field and
speaking with the docent there about the blackbird class aircraft they
have. He was mentioning they take off with very little fuel, then
they fully fuel and do their mission. He said the aircraft would heat
up and then the aircraft would stop leaking fuel. Then when they
land, he said they needed to circle around for an hour at low altitude
to cool off the skin and when they landed, nobody could touch the skin
as it was blistering hot. All from 1950 design - not much like that
even in today's fleet, it seems.

I had a client that has a Dell Optiplex that was doing the same thing

Pulled the battery and tested it. Voltage was Ok. Reinstalled it and
same thing

No Keyboard present. For Grins and Giggles I installed a brand new battery.
Restarted it and Keyboard worked.
Good luck with the PS2 to USB converters Dell's don't like them.
I tried 6 on my Optiplex 320 none worked. Yet 4 of the 6 worked on my

Usually a couple of reboots would have things running again. Now it goes to

next. I have a variety of diagnostic disks, but they always boot to a menu,
and I have no keyboard or mouse to select anything. As is usual, storms in

Any suggestions? I am thinking at this point it might be time to break down

Jim,

There are 3 bolts that have to be loosened.
2 on the alt one top one bottom and one where the bracket mounts to the

If you don't loosen them the adjusting bolt will bend DAMHIK. when you
get the Alt

adjusted tighten them back up. They are either 15 or 17 mm.

It's coming loose, definitely. Belts aren't wearing.

Uh, the clamp bolt.

Usually, the rust keeps it locked solid.
Maybe try purple loctite?

What clamp bolt? This is the adjuster that sticks
out the side like it's making a right turn. Uses a
13mm wrench to adjust. No clamp bolt I can see,
it's supposed to have a tight enough friction fit
to stay put.

Which this one does not, and so it's now wearing a
lovely dab of blue locktite. We'll see how it goes.

I'm not picturing this.

Our car has a skinny little 1/8 long bolt that somehow
ties into the front of the big bolt going through both top
ears of the alternator and the bracket. Behind the head
of this big bolt is a big washer, spreading the load to the
slot in the bracket. The other end of this big bolt, at
the other upper ear of the alternator, was free.

The skinny bolt has a big hex screw thingy at the outboard
end, it moves the bracket back and forth, tightening the belt.

I assume, though I haven't dug into it that far yet, that
there is also a pivot bolt at the bottom of the alternator.

if its in the wrong position. I presume its dirty contacts as its been getting
better with use.

The high-beam flash function had not worked on my '95 E300 since I purchased
the car, and recently the normal high-beam selection got flaky as well.

Marshall often recommended De-Oxit electrical cleaner (as well as changing
the fuses), so I started with new fuses but that didn't solve it.

I popped off the plastic cover at the base of the combination switch stalk,

and applied De-Oxit per the directions on the can to the high-beam workings.
Normal function has been restored - thanks again Marshall Booth!

Very respectfully,

Re: [MBZ] Vacuum Cleaner Recommendations

That's a Rainbow Allan
We've had one for 20+ years. With one motor change.
You empty the water after each use. And store with no water in the tank.
One on the neat features is you can set it in a room with the tank
filled and turn it
on for an hour or so it will pull the dust out out of the air. You can
add your favorite

scent to the water and make the room smell GOOD ;-) .

Dysons are expensive, and made of plastic. Plastics have a usable

Gonna spend that money, look for a used all metal Hoover, Electrolux,
or Filter Queen.

Is Filter Queen the one that you fill with water to catch all the dust
and dirt? That has always seem to me as something that might work well
but be a real PITA to use, dealing with dumping the dirty water and
clearly you can't let it sit around very long before it will start to
really smell.

Subject: [MBZ] OT Dodge engine question

I am looking for a van, so I found this. I was wondering if anyone
knows enough about modern dodge gassers to be able to diagnose this:

131k miles 3.3L Motor 6 Cylinders. Overall its in good condition,
runs and drives. STARTS QUICK, SHIFTS SMOOTH and DRIVES WELL, but one
thing is that the RPMs won't go higher than 3000. I have no idea why,
don't know how to fix it and can't afford to, i wish i were a
mechanic. Anyways, i bought another car now, and hoping to sell this
to someone who can fix it or is okay with staying under 3k RMPs. Like
i said - drives great both in city and highways. Picks up speed with
no trouble, as long as it's a slow acceleration. Motor sounds good,
transmission shifts well, no oil leaks, or any unusual noise.

Is that a limp home mode? If not, is there an electronic module
that needs to be replaced? Like the engine computer? The price is
right if I can diagnose the problem.

8mm for the hold down nut and 12mm for the plug.
Gear wrenches for both or a 8mm swivel 1/4 socket for the nut.

Get a gear wrench, I think it is a 10mm that fits the GP wire nuts, and
put a little super magnet on the outside to hold the nut.

Remember the connections from the injectors to the IP are about as in the

Then the fact that the little electrical connections have to come off
first and they're VERY easy to drop nd you can't swing the wrench all
that far.

Loren you can use PowerPoint or Open Office to extract the Audio from a PPS

Go here :

I am becoming a raving fan of audacity. Here is the question. Is it
possible to import the narrated sound from a ppt slideshow into
Audacity to edit it? If so, how do you do that? I have tried to
drag the speaker symbol in the ppt slide to the Audacity window with
no result.

There does not seem to be any way to save, move or edit the ppt audio.

Thanks
