Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Hawaiian Marriages

Hi group,

I have been thinking about my great great grandparents lately. They are
Manuel Rodrigues and Isabel Marie ???. They are my grandmother's paternal
grandparents. From what I can gather, both were born in the Azores (not
sure where yet.) However, there was an age gap of 14 to 16 years between
them. He was born in 1854 and she was born in 1870 - 1872. According to
the 1920 census, he immigrated to Hawaii in 1874 and she in 1890.
Unfortunately, the census takers made an error here because according to the
1900 Census when they were living in Hawaii, their oldest son was born in
Hawaii in 1886. My great-grandfather, Joaquin Rodrigues was born on the Big
Island on December 1, 1897.

I do not know her maiden name and my grandmother cannot remember it. She
is now 87 years old. I have also tried to locate both of them on the
passenger lists on LUSAWEB.com without success. I presume they were married
in Hawaii. I am wondering if there is a resource for church records on the
islands?

In some of the census's, it says that she was Naturalized. I am going to
check to see if she is in the databases at the local court house the next
time I am over there. Just wanted to bounce this off the group and see if
anyone else has any ideas.

The family moved to California by the 1910 Census.

Any thoughts will help.

Thanks

OK, I think I came up with an idea to illustrate double first cousins.

I think the people that I used are fairly famous worldwide.

If you think of you and your first cousin, you are first cousins because you
share Grandma and Grandpa ___ in common.

Double first cousins share BOTH sets of grandparents in common. You get a
brother and sister from one family marrying the sister and brother from the
other family.

I've use Desi Arnaz Lucille Ball for one family and John F. Kennedy and
Jackie Bouvier Onassis as the other family. Their kids marry each other and
we'll pretend they have you and me. Change my gender to suit your needs on
the attached chart. (PDF - I think most people can view this).

Repost for Fred Souza, fsouza31 at comcast.net

Cheri,

Thanks so much for clarifying how this works. I don't have any connection
to a genealogy program yet, but I regularly read the correspondence from
within the group, and this was the first time I had seen SOUSA mentioned, so
I wanted to look at what he had just in case it gave some hints to my
family. My only surviving uncle (born in the US) seems to think there was a
dramatic name change so that our last name shouldn't even be Souza, (and I
have some feeling that he may be right since my dad had issues when he
retired because of the name he thinks is the right one being on his birth
certificate). Of course, this makes finding any information really
complicated. On the other side it is even more complicated because there
maternal surname issue and there being a lack of any family to contact
creates another dead end. At this point I will be satisfied to just get
back to the information from the original immigrants, and leave it up to my
kids and cousins to go from there.

Thanks,

Aloha Cheri,

Sorry Cheri my misspelling it should be Sao Miguel in the Azores. I did
find quite a bit more info since I posted my tree. Just need to find the
time to put it in. My biggest set back on the Souza side is I can't find
him in any of the ship lists nor my great grandmother. This is where I'm
hoping that George is going to be able to help me.

I'm not sure where we connect but I do have a feeling it is through the
Barboza or Barbosa side. That would be my mother's grandmother. If that
is our link, just to let you know I do have a family pic with her and her
husband and all the children.

I'll keep on trudging...

Don't know which one of your lines yet, but your DNA is dancing around a
group of us with Vila Franca ancestry. So at least one of your lines comes
from there.

P.S. You may want to double check your genealogy program to be sure you have
the island as Sao Miguel. San Miguel island is one of the Channel Islands
off the coast of California. Someone searching the archive/web board/forum
may not be able to find your post as they would be looking for Sao Miguel

Cheri,

Looking into my notes she was born in Sao Miguel, Azores, around 1872 and
died in Paauilo, Hi 1943. Her dad was Jose Freitas Silva born Aug 05, 1884,
(I don't know where) and died October 22, 1908 probably in Paauilo because
he is buried at Kukaiau County Cemetery next to Paauilo. I don't have
anything on her mother. Her husband Francisco da Luz came from Madeira.

It seems she came over around 1882 to Hawaii. From my notes that I got from
a family member it seems she had 3 brothers Manuel, Marion, and Antone, two
sisters Evelyn and Dolores. It seems Antone, Evelyn and Dolores carried the
Barboza name. Gosh Portuguese carries too many names, LOL.

Through the DNA it does seem we have a closer connection right? I'm just
curious to see where the connection is. I'm still kind of tied up now but
hopefully I can spend a lot more time researching and getting more organized
in a couple of months.

I looked at your Gedcom through FTDNA and I don't know if the info is
missing on your end or the system ate it. The Barboza that is your mom's
grandma is Maria Silva Barboza b. 1872 (no place stated) and d. 1948 (no
place stated). I looked at Maria's hubby, Francisco A. da Luz, and it also
gives birth and death years but no places.

Mine were Mello Barbozas. He took that name from his grandma. My Barbozas
are in Vila Franca (to Ponta Garca), but it's in the early 1700s. We're off

Gail E,

Log into your FTDNA account with the kit number and password.

Across the top is a navy blue or blackish navigation barHome, My
Account, Projects.

Point at Projects. When the drop down menu appears, click on Join. If
Madeira is not one of the suggestions, just type Madeira in the Search By

Joining projects is free on FTDNA.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] More than one group

2013-05-04 Thread Gail Elizares
Thanks Cheri,

I have a lot more info to enter in, but the time do it is a little
constraint. I'm hoping this summer I can update and get a more solid
background. Hopefully we can find our common ancestor. So far with all my
ancestors I don't know what part they came from except San Miguel.
Hopefully as I dig deeper this summer I can find something.

Thanks again for your help,

Gail E,

I don't believe what group your match is from is of too much importance. If
you match my dad (and you do), you really don't care what project he's in.
You want to look at his Gedcom and look for the common ancestor. But if you
really want to know, go to your Matches and click on his name. It says
his Projects. But my dad is misleading. I've got him in a couple of extra
projects so other admins can see what I do with his page.

You'll have much more success with DNA matches once you get more paper trail
done. I see you've got all your great-grandparents. Now you need their
freguesias Pick a line and work that back. Take down your current Gedcom
and upload the one with your new work. Then pick another line and work that
line back. Replace that Gedcom. As you work with the freguesias, you can
check and see if you are in the same freguesias as your matches. Then you
will have a way to work towards making a paper trail connection with your
matches.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Thanks!

2013-03-19 Thread Gail Elizares
I just want to say thank you very much. E I believe you were the one who
gave me a date of a possible Mary Dias that died on May 1, 1933. Well I
went on ancestry on that possible date which took me to find a grave. She
is buried at St. Mary's. I called them and they didn't have much info so I
ordered the death certificate and it is my Aunty and Uncle that I was
looking for.

I don't know why when I tried to order the death certificate within that
year, they said they couldn't come up with that name. Maybe I should get a
refund, LOL. Anyway they buried under the name Mary S. and Jose S. Deas,
but the death certificate says Dias.

Again thank you for solving another mystery for me!

Bernadette,

I was thinking the same thing, I have found her brother buried there, and
her daughter and husband are buried at S. Michaels's, and her father is
buried at St. Mary's. Hopefully I can find them at one of the cemeteries.
What bothers me was why I couldn't find anything from the alameda county
vital records.

Look at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery in Hayward, California. My

Aloha to all,

I need some advice on how to proceed. Mary Dias is my grandfather's sister
and I have been trying to find out where there are buried but right now I've
hit a road block.

Mary (deSouza) Dias was born around 1883, in Wainaku HI and married Joseph
Dias who was born around 1874 in Portugal. The last known census I found
them in was in 1930 in Brooklyn Township in Alameda County California. They
had a daughter named Annie Dias who I found living with her sister Mary
Joseph Correia in the 1940 census in San Leandro. From family members they
were both dead by 1941 as they can remember. Assuming they died between
1930 and 1940 I tried ordering death certificates for that time period and
they found none. I have searched on ancestry for any census, obituaries and
death index and can't find anything. Do any of you have suggestions as to
where I should go from here?

Thanks,

Gail (Souza Dias) Elizares

Thanks Sonia and Cheri,

I did try on family search. I was thinking of joining Vital Search but was
a little hesitant because if they would have the same info as ancestry.
With your experience has Vital Search been a great help in your genealogy?
I will also use the suggestion of the city directory, it could be that they
did move to San Leandro because I found their daughter and son-in-law in the
1940 census.

Thanks again for the suggestions,

And I have a different thought process :)
You've confirmed they were alive in 1930 and you know where they were
living.
I'd start looking at the city directory for that city in 1930 and confirm
at which date they were no longer there: that will give you the next
starting point as opposed to blindly looking for them between all years in
1930-1940.

Gail E,

Search both Ancestry and Family Search for the 1940 census. Different
entities, different indexers.

There's 2 places to find the California Death Index online. One is
VitalSearch, a subscription site. Your local public library might have a
subscription. The other is on FamilySearch. Family Search is free.
However, it's not fully indexed. You'll have to go to CA records, then find
the 1930s decade for the death index, then click on that. Once you get to
the Ds, you'll see about 800 images to go through. I'd type in image 100
and go up or down from there until you hit the Di section then eventually
Dias.

If you don't find them dying in the 1930s, then search the 1940-1997 CA
Death Index (also free from Family Search) to figure out when they died. If
they died after 1940, then you'll have to do some creative hunting to find
them in the 1940 census.

Good luck,
Cheri Mello

Patronymics isn't involved in this case at all. Normally, the rule of

take the mother's surname. Since women's surnames were often not recorded
(Maria Joaquina de Jesus was actually the mother's given name), you
sometimes need to go back one or more generations to identify the mother's
surname. In this case it appears to have come from your 4th-GGrandfather.
Now you have to figure out from whom the name Machado came from.

Cristiano's mother, according to the marriage records was Maria Joaquina de

was also Pereira. The only Pereira that has come up in the family tree so
far was the grandfather of Maria Joaquina de Jesus who appears as Mathias

Cristiano used his wife's grandather's middle name which seems a bit far out

I'm not versed on the patrynomics as yet but this seems something different.

my relatives got their start there too. Have you checked the 1900 1910

PS In my 23 yrs on BI never heard of either Haukula or HoomulaHonomu
yes, near Hakalau.

I've looked through all of the 1906 passports and did not find them.
Would they be required to apply for a passport in advance of moving?
Would the children (5 of them) also be required to have a passport and

Yes, I looked at island routes and the archives at the Hawaii.gov site,
couldn't find it there. I'm just wondering if he used another name coming
over. It's like his last name was de Souza, some children were name Souza
Dias, and some were just plain Souza. He was also married in 1883, I don't
know if he married in Portugal or Hawaii. I do show they had a child name
Maria da Estrella Souza born in Portugal in 1882.

Go back to the website and start with the 1875-1883 records. Start at the
end, in 1883. They could have immigrated Nov 1883 and the daughter born Dec
1883, so you need to check that too. DON'T read name by name. Look at the
right hand page. In the middle, there's a column that say Destino
(Destination). Look for the words Hawaii, Sandwich Isles,' or
Sandwich anything. And if he picked up his pen in the middle, it could
look like San dwich or Sandw ich or anything. So don't skip over it if
it initially looks like 2 words.

Once you find a group going to Hawaii/Sandwich islands, then scroll left,
looking for something that looks like Caetano da Souza , son of Jose da
Souza and Maria Ignacio. Or Maria anything. And Caetano will be in his
early 20s.

Someone with Bob de Mello's book or the Knowlton book may be able to look up
the entry for you (coming into HI). Also, you might want to check out Mel's
Portuguese Hawaiian immigration site at www. yourislandroutes.com. She has
an index to the book Portuguese Hawaiian Memories. That may give you more
info.

Thanks Cheri, on one census it said 1883 and one said 1887 but I believe
1883 is correct because they had a daughter in Portugal in 1882 and another
daughter born in Hawaii 1883. On his headstone his name is listed as Caton
de Souza born about 1860 in Sao Miguel. His name was also listed as Caitano
and Quitao. His parents are Jose de Souza and Maria Ignacio.

I tried looking at the CCA website but couldn't find anything. Do you think
his name could have been different when he traveled over?I do have the
census in my shoebox in ancestry, I'll look if he was naturalized.

Thanks again,

Gail E,

Need a name, date of event (death or whatever) and location.

Death certificates varied over time. Some ask certain questions, others
don't. And your ancestor wasn't the person giving the info on his own death
certificate. So many things on the death aren't always accurate. But there
may be clues you can get from the death that will lead you to look at
another source.

The port for Sao Miguel has records LEAVING the island. They are online at
the CCA Web site (Centro de Conhecimento dos Acores = Center of Knowledge of
the Azores).

http://goo.gl/0obW7

Look for the green words that say Pesquisa de Passaportes. Click that.
From the drop down, click Ponta Delgada then click the Procurar button.
Chose the year span you want and then go page by page looking for him.

Since you didn't give any dates on your ancestors, I don't know what
censuses you checked. Many of the U.S. Censuses ask for year of immigration
and if naturalized and what date.

Many of your matches will not be on this genealogy list (especially if you
are of other non-Portuguese ancestry). You'll need to contact each person
individually. Do a couple a day.

You're going to have to research further than your greats though. And work
on the freguesias. Sao Miguel island isn't enough. Since you match me,

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Passport/passenger list question

2012-06-29 Thread Gail Elizares
Shirely,

I’m sorry it could be Hayward, CA. We do have them in the census in Hawaii,
and one census says they came in 1883 and one says 1887 but it has to be
1883 because Maria was born in Hawaii.

tried ordering death certificates covering 1931 through 1935 but they

I’m doing this because I can’t find them in the 1940 census so I think they

I think that Family Tree DNA (FTDNA)'s coupon sale ran from about Memorial
to June 10th. The people who had previously tested did not have to wait for
a kit. FTDNA just pulled their vials and started processing them. So
people whose DNA was received at the lab in late May are starting to get
their results.

Stay tuned for more!

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Grave Photo

2012-06-16 Thread Gail Elizares
Thanks Cheri, I do understand your view. The only reason I asked was when I

Find A Grave and updated the request.

Gail,

There is nothing more annoying to volunteers than to go and take a photo
just to find out the person requesting asked the world and someone else did
it and wasted the volunteer's time. Even though I take pictures in larger
city cemeteries, some are old. Some are so large that the flat memorial
tablets are trimmed once every X months. So I sit and trim away the grass.
If there's mud (from the lawn being watered), I pull out my collapsible
bucket and find a spigot and wash it off. Then I let it dry. If the light
is not right, I pull out my umbrella and shade the stone the right way.

In fairness to the Find A Grave volunteers, you should take down your photo
request there and wait and see if anyone on this list picks up the request
or any other you list you may have posted it on. Find A Grave gives the
volunteer 2 weeks to fulfill the request after it has been claimed. So you
could wait 2 weeks after this posting to see if anyone fills it. And once
someone agrees to take your picture, you need to tell every list you posted
on that the request has been fulfilled so some other volunteer does not go
out there to take your photo.

Sorry if this doesn't sound polite. I've been doing the grave photos for a
few years now on Find A Grave and have encountered a few people who didn't
take down the request and I used my gas, time, and energy just to find out
that the request was fulfilled by someone else. Hope you understand.

Some photo requests (especially rural) can take a couple of years. I just
take them down and resubmit later for my rural requests.

If a month is too long for you to wait, call the cemetery. Some larger
cemeteries will take a photo for you for a fee.

I think the better venue for grave stone photo requests is Find A Grave.
They have an entire system and they are able to filter it for the cemetery
location you are requesting. This list is over 960+ people who live in
America, Canada, the Azores, New Zealand, Australia, etc. The focus of this
list is Azorean genealogy research and many people not in the area of
Alamada County.

Since you got help from someone on this for a previous photo request, I
suggest you email them directly (privately) to their email address. Take
down the request from Find A Grave and wait for the person from this list
who previously took the photo for you to take the other photo for you.

Hope that expedites your photo request,

St Mary's where? I bet there are hundreds in the U.S., Canada, England,
Australia, New Zealand...

If your ancestor is listed on Find A Grave, I'd click the Request a Photo
button there. If your ancestor does not have a memorial on Find A Grave,
I'd make one and then click the Request a Photo button.

Find A Grave then emails the top X people on the list within a Y mile radius
of that cemetery. Also, there are gravers that will browse the photo
requests and pick them up and go out to the cemetery to take a picture.
City cemeteries have a better response rate than rural cemeteries.
Nevertheless, Find A Grave has an army of volunteers that like to take
tombstone pictures.

[AZORES-Genealogy] DNA testing

Aloha Cheri,

I did place my order for the DNA testing and I thank you for the coupon.
Since I ordered it under my name, the test would have to be me? I'm just
curious because I think my Aunty who would be my father's sister would
probably have a better DNA match than if I take the test.

Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] vinha dalhos

2012-06-01 Thread Gail Elizares
In Hawaii we usually use aku which is a tuna fish. It will taste good with
whatever fish you use. This is a recipe that I use for Pickle Onions,

1 ¼ cup vinegar

2 cups water

3 tsp. Hawaiian salt also called rock salt

If you want your pickles really vinegary you can add more vinegar

We usually leave it out overnight so the salt really melts and put it in the
refrigerator the next day.

We also add in pipinola with the onions and bell peppers.

Hope this helps.

Just so the list knows...

Today is May 31st, the last day of the month. I am switching ISP providers
due to my move. The cable company is cutting this one off today. I don't
know if it's at 11:59 pm or what. The phone company will install the new
one, but I could not schedule them until Saturday. So Friday and part of
Saturday I won't have complete Internet access. I can view the emails and
send a very short reply though my not-so-smart smart phone. I won't be
forwarding coupons until Saturday.

And yes, keep the coupons coming if you have already tested and won't be
using them. I still need many more.

For those of you who have ordered, make sure you are part of the Azores DNA

1) Log into your DNA page with the kit number and password provided.
2) At the top, look for the blue navigation bar and point at Projects.

to anyone on the list. A friend of mine is stuck at these 2 people on one of
her lines. They were both born on Sao Miguel, we don't know where, but with
different records stating different ages we are guessing they were born
around 1875. On one Hawaii census, 1910, says he was 2 years older than her,
then on a birth record of one of their children it says she was 2 yrs. older
than him so we who knows!

They met married in Fall River, Mass. around 1899. Their first born child
was born in May 1900 in Hawaii, which is where they went after they married.
They stayed in Hawaii died there.

This is all we know are trying to find out where they came from on Sao
Miguel.

Here is some information about Dr. Machado posted in 2004 by John Miranda
Raposo, a fellow member of this group. It should answer any questions you
may have about Dr. Machado and his credentials. From what you have said
about the book you have, I'm unable to determine if this a newly available
resource, and/or, whether it is based on the same genealogical documents of
which Mr. Miranda Raposo speaks.

Carlos Machado was a very prominent 19th century political and social
leader in S. Miguel. He was the founder of the Museum in Ponta Delgada which
bears his name. His avocation was genealogical research. When he died he had
left
over 600 12x17 pages of genealogies, tracing the descendants of the
earliest settlers on S. Miguel to about the year 1900. Almost anybody with
origins in S. Miguel will eventually connect to one of the lines researched
by Carlos
Machado, thus saving an awful lot of time, eye strain and expense. Machado's
genealogies are kept at the archives in Ponta Delgada. There is only one
publicly photocopy available in the US, which is at the Taunton Public
Library. There are only about 6 copies in private hands in the US. Now,
Father Joseph Viveiros has entered the first 100 pages of the total 600
pages into a genealogy program. There are nearly 10,000 individuals in the
gedcom which includes Fr. Joe's supplemental research. Father Joe thinks
that it will take him another 3-4 years before all 600 pages have been
entered into his program. He is making a gedcom of the first 100 pages of
Carlos Machado's genealogies available on a CD-ROM. Anyone interested in the
details for purchasing the CD-ROM should contact me privately.

John Miranda Raposo

~~
I have been looking at Carlos Machado's genealogy book and found information
concerning my grandmother's family. If anyone has information as to who
Carlos Machado is, and about how he acquired his information I would be
interested in knowing.

Thank you,

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Nordestinho, Sao Miguel

2012-03-16 Thread Gail Elizares
Hi Jim,

I live in Hawaii and is also a descendent of de Souza. My great grandfather
Guitao de Souza came to Hawaii in 1883. His wife was Maria Ferreira. I
can't find his name on the manifest but he was also know as Caetano or
Caitano de Souza. They had a child Maria born in 1882 in Azores but I'm not
sure if she came with them. Guitao's father is Jose de Souza and mother
Maria Ignacia. The other children are Maria de Souza who married Joseph
Dias and lived in Alameda County, CA. The next one is Manoel Dias Souza who
I only know had their last child in Honolulu. I haven't found anything more
on him yet. The next child would be my grandfather Joaquin de Souza who
married Maria Oliveira Branco or Branco Oliveira lived here in Hawaii. The
next child is Caesar de Souza who lived in San Leandro, CA. The next child
was Rosaline who married Joseph Moniz Lindinha but later dropped the
Lindinha. They also lived the Alameda County area. Last was a son named
John. I don't know if he died because he is in the 1900 census as 4 years
old and in the 1920 census he is no longer there.

There is also another family from the Hilo area that is also a de Souza but
the names she's given me is not familiar with my family. I will tell her to
join the Azores group and she might be family to you.

mothers name Erma Sousa born and raised in oakland 1924

Father, Antone (sp) Sousa born in Azores came to Oakland 1919 through
Hawaii, with parents on boat to Hi 1901.

My Grandmother also Sousa born in Azores , probably a cousin of grandfather

Aunt name Constance also lived in Oakland

Aunt named Rosaline lived in Hawaii

cousin named Sony Vivas lives in Honolulu

At least one other of grandfathers generation named Manual Sousa

I know I have relatives still in Hawaii, Oakland and San Leandro CA

Any idea how I can make the first connections and get a start on this?

Another thing is there two spellings? Sousa and Souza?

help translate what it means. it is right after it lists the mothers
name as D. Maria de Mello. Usually in the other baptismal records for
their kids after it listed the mothers name it would follow by saying
moradores do vila da praia or somthing along those lines, but with
this record, there is a phrase just before this sentence that I was
curious about. It may be nothing, but hopefully might help. Also there
is some writing on the side of the record that I was curious about
--below where the priest wrote in afterwards who the godparents were.

Any help would be appreciated.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] marraige records

2012-01-07 Thread Gail Elizares
Thank you so much for all your help, I appreciate it. What is very funny is
their names on the death certificate is Lindinha and the grave is Moniz.
His name was Jospeh Moniz Lindinha. I just got word from the vital
statistic office that they found my Aunty Rosaline death certificate so I
should be receiving it sometime next week. If ever you need any information
from the big island Hawaii and I can help, just let me know.

These Portuguese don't want to be found so they keep changing their names
Ha! Ha!. It's like my great grandfather is de Souza but on his grave is
Souza and his wife is Souza Dias. Some names are just Dias and some are
Souza so it gets a little harder to find.

Thanks again and I hope you have a very nice weekend.

I do have to say... it is time for a happy dance!!!I found three people
(not two) when I went to the cemetery. I know I said that I would be a
second set of eyes; however, I was out there last week and (at first) I
looked and could not find the graves.

As I said in a previous email, the people at this cemetery are VERY helpful.
I went back in and confirmed with them the locations of the graves and went
back out to the site. They even gave me a piece of paper with the other
graves in the surrounding area, so I could narrow the area down and make
sure I was in the correct spot. It turns out I wasn't in the correct spot
the first time, I was actually a row off when I was looking for Alfred
Lindinha...

Oh and there is another surprise (and this is why I fulfilled the request on
Find a Grave.)  They are not buried under the name Lindinha on the markers;
however, the office records do, in fact, reflect Lindinha. The surname on
all three markers is Moniz. The person buried next to Alfred is the person
buried next to him on the piece of paper that the office provided, so I am
very certain that I have the correct marker.

Let me know if you need anything else. =-)

p.s. I will email you the actual pictures in a couple of minutes.

It is very common to have more than one child with the same first name on

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Locating the village or freguesia

2011-12-28 Thread Gail Elizares
Ava,

This is so cool, finding about your family. Remember the saying you don't
know who you are related too? It's going to take some time for me to find
out where my grandparents came from. On the de Souza family his first name
doesn't even show up on the ships list. I don't know if he went by another
name. I don't know if he was married in Portugal or in Hawaii. His
immigration was in 1883 and his marriage. It shows 2 girls by the name of
Maria, one born in 1882 and one in 1883. I don't know if they are the same
in one person or different. It showed my grandmother had 8 children and 6
was living but what I had is 7 if I include the 2 Marias. If they had two
Maria's one could have died. I think there youngest child either died or
moved with someone else. He was 4 years old in the 1900 census and doesn't
appear in the 1910 census. A lot of groundwork on this one. I just wish I
could spend more time with it. Pretty soon I'm going to be really busy and
won't be able to do anything. I'm trying to find out as much as I can using
whatever resources I have and probably make the trip to Honolulu to find the
rest.

Dear Rick,

Thanks for the comments. I don't know why I didn't see Dias. It's so
obvious now.

I did not receive any charts. How were they sent? Possibly an email
message never got through to me. I checked my spam folder, but nothing
there.

Anyway, I really look forward to seeing them. Thanks again.

Dear Rick,

Thank you, thank you. Yes, the record is difficult to read, but I've been
poring over it. Looks to me as if Amalia's parents were naturals of Nossa
Senhora da Estrella in Ribeira Grande. [RFP] Yes. I'm so happy to have her
grandparents names, which I had not known. I get the following:

Paternal: Manoel Cabral and Roza Joaquianna (not sure about the last
part)[RFP]Manuel Cabrel Rosa Joaquina
Maternal: Jose Dinis and Roza de Jesus[RFP] Jose Dias Rosa de Jesus

I'm not sure about Dinis. I think it's a D, but if it's a P it could
be Paiva. I'll look at it again later and see if it becomes clearer.

The date is giving me difficulty, though. I'm reading fifth day of the
month of February of eighteen hundred and--and here is where I get confused.
It has to be quarenta or cinquenta, but I can't make out a q in the
word.. [RFP] Born 5 Feb 1852 Baptized 23 Feb 1852 Your title for the photo
shows the year to be 1847,[RFP] The book starts in 1847 this record was on
the last page which is 1852. but that would make her 26 rather than 25
[RFP] Yes records do have errors at the time of her marriage in 1873.
Could the year possibly be cincuenta e dois? Is fifty ever spelled that
way? According to her gravestone, she was born in 1852, but that doesn't
mean anything.

Anyway, I'll give it a rest for now and then look at it later. In the
meantime, it's great to have the names (sort of) of my new randparents.

Thanks again for all your help with this.

Rosaline marries Joe and they have a son. 26 years after that son's

then you state that they moved with 3 children. But that doesn't make
sense because you said their son died at 26 and they had 2 daughters. So
these 2 little girls could not have known their big brother.

I'd wait for the death certificates to come to see if it sheds any light
on
your problem. Depending on when Joe died, that death certificate may
state
the years of his marriage. It it was 30 years, then you can subtract 30

that suggest either CA or HI as possible marriage locations.

Dear Listers,

According to the Monterey County Gen. Soc newsletter, JanFeb 2012, there
is a bill before the Assembly, AB1053 which will raise the cost of Birth
Death records in California $9 more dollars. I you need to order any
Birth/Death records you need to do it next week or pay another $9 on top
of whatever your County charges or the State charges!!

According to Janel Davidson, who wrote the article, if you want a
certified copy you need to go in person or have your mail-in application
notarized. Otherwise, you will get an INFORMATIONAL copy, not valid to
establish idendity. The only bad thing is that on the informational copy
the mother's maiden name MAY be blocked out!

For more info about where the bill stands go to:

Repost for Eleanor, eminniel at comcast.net

 Rick,

Thanks so much for the advice. Hopefully somewhere in all the records
 a
village is mentioned. I have all the dates of arrival for both
grandparents Lopez and Madruga. I have their original marriage
certificate and his original naturalization papers. All records only
state St. Fayal no village. The 1910 Federal Census for Phillipa
Cardoza Madruga states birth place as Atlantic Island, Azores. All the
children for Manuel Madruga and Phillipa were born in the US. All the
Lopez's were born in St. Fayal and became naturalized citizens.
 Dimingo
Lopez came from Spain but move to the Azores when he married his first
wife. She died in child birth. Their two sons remained in the Azores.
All the children from his marriage to Florinda were born in St. Fayal.
They arrived in the US in 1884 with their eight children. A relative
told me they came to the US because they hoped to avoid the draft in
Portugal because they had seven boys. I have their records and a lot
 of
stories from my grandfather. He lived to be 106. My father died very
young and my grandparents helped raise my brother and myself. My
 mother
gave me all the records before she died. I have been searching for
months but cannot find anything else. I guess I need to return to
Massachusetts this summer and try he check records from East Cambridge
and Gloucester. I am sure the spelling of the surnames are correct. I
remember my grandfather telling me his middle name was Rodriquez but
 at
Ellis Island they changed it to Roger. I am going to review all the
records I have and hopefully a village is mentioned, The website
Family Search has a wealth of info and it is all free no membership,
etc. Their records are very accurate. I have been researching St.
Fayal. I am seriously thinking for traveling there sometime next year
as finding my roots on both sides is very important. It's top priority
on my bucket list. I am happy I found this group.

 Thanks again

 Eleanor
Shirley,

Thanks so much for responding to my email. Dimingo Lopez was born in
Spain in 1848. Florinda Amaral was born in the Azores in 1861. They
were married in St. Fayal in 1879. They came to the United States in
1894. There children were all born in St. Fayal (Faial). Florinda was
Dimingo's second wife. His first wife died at 16 and their two sons
remained in St. Fayal. Their children were: Felisberto 1881, James
1883, Joseph 1884, Josephine 1887, Emiel 1887, Anthony 1888, Americo
1889 and Manuel 1892. They lived in East Cambridge, Mass. until 1906.
Then moved to Arlington, Mass. East Cambridge still has a large
population of people from the Azores. There is a possibility that
Florinda might be buried in Cambridge. There children all became
naturalized citizens. I was told they left the Azores because the boys
would have to serve in the Army. None of the brothers served in WW1.
All all must have been deferred. Their occupations were Iron Workers
and Fisherman accept for Felisberto and Anthony. Felisberto (known as
Felix) was Captain of the Arlington Police Department and Anthony was
Captain of the Fire Department. I have more dates regarding the
brother's and sister but nothing else regarding Florinda or Dimingo. My
mother's side of the family is very large. She had 72 first cousins.
As a child I went to a lot of the festivals in East Cambridge,
Gloucester and New Bedford. My grandfather had relatives in New
Bedford. One of them was actually a professional Santa Clause.

[AZORES-Genealogy] marraige records

2011-12-19 Thread Gail Elizares
What is the best method to finding marriage records? I have family from
Hawaii that moved to California, my Aunty Rosaline married a Joe Moniz
Lindinha. Their son died about 26 years old and they had two daughters. I
have no idea where to start to see if they got married. Any suggestions? I
know they both moved with their 3 children to California about 1923. I have
been trying to see if I could find them in the 1930 census but couldn't. I
just ordered Uncle Joe and his son's death certificates from Alameda County,
but still couldn't find my aunties. Any tips you can give me would be
appreciated.

Please reply directly to me, thank you.

I am currently doing some research on illegal emigration from Portugal to
the United States during the time period (roughly) between 1890-1910. If
you had a relative who emigrated during this time period and you have either
their passport but not their name on a passenger list OR you have found
their name on a passenger list but have not found their passport, can you
please email me directly? I am only trying to compile some rough numbers
regarding how many people may have travailed illegally from Portugal to the
United States.

My research has shown, so far, that many individuals were not aware that
they were even traveling illegally or that they were aiding illegal travel!

Thanks in advance,

[AZORES-Genealogy]

2011-09-17 Thread Gail Elizares
Is anyone familiar with the website geneAll.net? I think I found my great
grandparents but I'm quite confused on the dates. Sometimes my Google
translator isn't translating.

The Portuguese Genealogy of Oahu told me my great great grandparents are
Jose de Souza and Maria Ignacio. On the website I did find a Jose de Souza
and a Maria Ignacia. It seems their son also Jose de Souza married Maria
Jose. They have a date 11-25-1811 and Alcobaca, Alpedriz. Next to father
Jose de Souza they have Mouraria + 1811. My great grandfather Caitano de
Souza was born around 1860, which I believe Jose Jr could be his brother.
Anyway can someone look it up and shed some light for me? The dates doesn't
seem to jive.

Hi,

There is only one Cemetery in Rabo de Peixe. Nowadays the minimum time a
corps is interred is 5 years. If you want to keep the corps there you have
to buy the land of the grave. Then you may put as many corps as you want in
your land under the rule of the minimum 5 years.

The burial records must be at the Registo Civil of Ribeira Grande.

Gail,

At the cemetery you buy the land. After that you have a property certificate
like when you buy a house. After that if you want to build something there
you have to pay a new fee. No one takes care of the grave or mausoleum you
built there unless you have someone to take care of it. If a corps is buried
in the earth it must stay there at least for 5 years. Only after that you
may put another corps in the same grave. Of course if you build a mausoleum
you may put more coffins (lead urns) there. Usually people buy the land to
build some kind of memorial and to be buried in the same land as his/her
mother (for example) was buried…

Nowadays, there are no private cemeteries (may be very special cases or old
ones). In Ponta Delgada we have two cemeteries: The Cemitério de S. Joaquim
(the so called public cemetery) and the Cemitério dos Ingleses (English
Cemetery) which is no longer used because everybody has to be buried at the
so called public cemetery by force of law.

The designation comes from the time when people was buried in the churches.
At that time you had Catholic burials, Protestant burials (first law was in
1805 but only in 1835 the burial outside the churches started… in some
places only ended about 1920’s).

(I heard that the Jewish people were buried in the beaches… not sure of!!)

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Dessert called Rosas do Egipto [Rosas do Egito] or Egyptian Roses?

2011-08-15 Thread Gail Elizares
Aloha Karen,

This is what I make my sweet bread with;

10# flour

18 eggs beaten, I add a little yellow food coloring (the old days they use
only the yolk but now can’t afford to throw the rest away)

1 to 2 tsp. vanilla extract (my family doesn’t care too much for extract
because of heartburn so I cut it down)

4 cans carnation milk

4 cans water (using the carnation milk cans)

2 sticks butter Crisco

1 block butter

3 sets of yeast

4 ½ cups sugar

1 tsp salt (Optional) I don’t add in mines (I know the old Portuguese would
scream at me for not adding but I found no difference)

Raisins (Optional)

Add sugar to the flour

Empty packets of yeast with 1 tsp sugar and 1 cup warm water

Melt on low fire butter Crisco and butter with the carnation milk (when it
is done I add 4 cans of cold water to cool off)

Add yeast mixture and butter mixture to flour and mix. I’ve had to change
my recipe around using the stone oven. I have a mixer so I usually add a
little flour as it’s mixing. Once the dough stops sticking to the side it
is done. You might have to experiment because weather makes a difference on
the dough too. So experiment and make your own adjustments. If using a
mixer add raisins and hand fold in so it doesn’t smash. You would baste the
bread right before going in the oven with beaten eggs. With the stone oven
I can use only the egg whites so it doesn’t get to dark and hard. In the
regular oven I use to mix 1 or 1 eggs and add little carnation cream. Again
that is to your liking. Some people like the more crunchy so you would add
the carnation cream. I was raised when it was Easter we would fold in a egg
with the shell into the dough and bake it.

If I have time later I will find the picture with my bread in the stone oven

Good Luck,

Gail

Katherine,

My relatives from Flores always had a FILHOS FEAST on Ash Wednesday. We'd
meet at the family ranch, have filhos hot out of the frying pan...drizzled
with butter, then ate with either jam or a dusting of sugar and a slice of
cheddar cheese. It's a tradition that I've continued making for my family,
but they don't get excited about them like I do. Actually they call them
lead hockey pucks...more for me...LOL! I make a huge batch and freeze the
majority of what we don't eat. When I want a filhos for breakfast, I take
one out of the freezer, microwave it a bit (experiment with your microwave
and start at 20 second intervals so you don't over cook it), then add butter
and your favorite topping. They taste greasy and hot, just like Ava and
Granny Marie made them on Ash Wednesday!

Last year I broke my wrist and was unable to make (knead the dough) for my
annual filhos feast. Someone recommended the Portuguese Bakery, 2082 El
Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA 408-984-2234. I ordered several dozen and
they arrived the next week. They went into the freezer and we enjoyed them
for several weeks. Their website says that they make daily filhos, but
people recommend arriving at 9 am to get fresh ones...they tend to sell out
quickly. They also sell 9 flavors of biscoitos, sweet bread, lemony rice
pudding, and on the last Saturday of the month serve sopas (pot roast
cabbage over bread with mint). If you live in the Bay Area, check them out!

 Obrigada, Gayle!

It sounds rather like the Portuguese recipe above. Does your cookbook
mention anything about oleo (frying in oil)? To me they sound sort
of like the pre-Lenten treats called filhós or malassadas,
dependking on the part of the Azores one's in. The strange thing is
that the novel I'm translating mentions them being made for feeding
folks doing a matança (ritual hog-killing) in Nordeste, São Miguel,
during Advent (pre-Xmas), not Lent. Somehow I had the impression that
traditionally filhós or malassadas weren't made other times of year.

online for over a decade in various formats -- I first encountered her
on a Geocities website ca. 2000):

 Ingredientes
 - 500 g de farinha
 - açúcar a gosto
 - raspas de 1 limão
 - leite o suficiente
