Very pretty. Unfortunately we lived near the beach, and it was impossible

Thanks for the reminder. I think the right shock tower went in mine, right
before the trunk floor. In 1977, all sunroof cars, and I believe all EMS, were
assembled in Belgium. All Belgian 99s were rust buckets. I always wondered if
they produced the unibodies in Sweden and shipped them bare metal over sea to
Belgium for painting, undercoating and assembly. Whatever the deal was, the rust
was happening underneath all that wonderful Saab rustproofing and you didn't
know about it until something fell through the trunk floor. I had to quit
driving mine when the rust in the trunk took out a gas tank strap attachment
point. I straddled a woodchuck, heard a sort of bonging sound, looked in the
mirror and saw the chuck stand up, wobble, and keel over. When I got home I
looked under the car to figure out what hit him, and one side of my gas tank was
hanging low. I bought a Swedish 1975 donor body but never transferred the EMS
parts to it.

Anybody have experience with the slk? Title is not an issue to me.
Gump was never going to be perfect, so I am ok with a car with minor
issues.

An SLK with a roof that doesn't go down might not be a minor issue.
The cars are very small, you'll sure notice that vs Gumpy. Very
little storage space, most especially with the lid down, it's no
SL. My wife knows somebody with one, she says they like it.

I don't know if we could ever have one, my wife's been driving
around with three saxophones in the trunk lately. The SL will
do it, because of the rear 'seat', but just barely. They're the
only 2-seaters I know of that have any semblance of storage.

The trunk opened this evening. Weird.

I've seen where the linkage between the vacuum actuator and
the lock mechanism gets a bit messed up, perhaps this is part
of your problem? It's got deliberate 'play' in it, so you
can use the key, but too much is a bad thing. (As would be
too little.)

[MBZ] glow plugs - live learn

2011-09-20 Thread glenn brown

I had an experience yesterday where my '84 300D would not start and the dash
glow plug lite would not lite and, since the glow plug fuse is fine, I checked
the resistance (Fluke VOM) of the Bosch glow plugs which I installed in '06. I
found two of the plugs (#3 4) had infinite resistance so I installed a couple
of the original Behr glow plugs pulled in '06 and still reading good. I've
since ordered a set of Behr glow plugs from Rusty. Is this a common occurance
where the Behr glow plugs have substantially greater longevity than the Bosch
glow plugs? Note: I purchased this car in '96 from the estate of the original
purchaser and, since the M-B dealer from where it was originally purchased was
closing its doors, I obtained all the service records for this car and found no
glow plug replacements. TIA.

[MBZ] Fw: W123 Trunk Lock

2011-09-20 Thread MG
I ordered one from the dealer by vin number to get the right one
that would work with the rest of the locks. I was told it would
come with a new key and it did. Problem was the new key didn't
work with the other locks and the old key didn't work with the
net ignition lock. Had to send it back with my old key and they
redid the lock so it would work with my old key and sent a new
with it.

Re: [MBZ] lockout

2011-09-20 Thread Ed Booher
I had this happen to me the other day. Key would still open the trunk
directly, but placing lock in central lock mode would not open trunk. A
couple days later my door locks stop working too. So, at least in my case,
there appears to be a vacuum leak. Perhaps a slow leak is causing a similar
problem here.

Oddly enough, some how the filler door appears stuck in unlocked mode.
Even just before the door locks stopped working. I think I really need to
find someone that has a proper vacuum hose diagram, because I think I have
an issue :)

No, not on a W123 trunk.

When vertical, the key can be removed and is in
 locked-and-only-the-key-will-unlock mode.

Horizontal, the key can be removed and is in
 lock-and-unlock-at-the-whim-of-the-vacuum-system mode.

Turned 45 degrees counterclockwise from horizontal is
unlock-when-the-vacuum-says-lock mode. The key cannot be
removed and the position is spring-loaded to return to
 horizontal.

At least it's that way on all of my cars.

used Beru I think so I can't comment on Bosch.

I will say that GP life seems to be directly related to the number of starts
you make. My '83 240D had new plugs (outside at 10F) in about 2004. They were
fine until I bought the car back in 2008 and 3 of 4 were bad. The car had been
mostly city driven during its time out of my ownership though...

TIA.

I think I really need to
find someone that has a proper vacuum hose diagram, because I think I have
an issue :)

It took me a while to get around to it, but I finally got the '87 300D
with the exhaust blockage up on stands, gave all the exhaust fasteners
a repeated treatment with PB Blaster over several days, and took the
exhaust apart. No question, the catalytic converter is blocked up.
(Yes, Virginia, 603 cars, and probably all later diesels, do have one.)

I don't have $1,500 for a new factory cat from Rusty. I realize there
are a couple of less-than-legal options here, such as welding in a
straight pipe or a small muffler, or hollowing out the inside of the
cat by brute force. However, I also found this unit meant for big
pickups, which would fit neatly into the space where the factory cat
does:
http://tinyurl.com/43lzxrz

I wonder what the EPA would say about this? You're supposed to leave
emissions control systems in their factory configuration... but people
replace worn-out factory cats on gas cars with cheapo generic units
all the time (or else there wouldn't be any business in the latter).
What about on diesels? Seems to me that replacing the factory
Mercedes diesel catalyst with one using diesel emissions control
technology 25 years more advanced should meet the spirit, if not the
letter, of the law. From a technical standpoint the only problem I
can see is that the primary byproduct of the catalysis of diesel
exhaust, according to the product description I linked to, is water...
which means corrosion issues for the rest of the system downstream
from the cat.

That's killing a fly with a sledgehammer for most people.

I would say if you already use other Google tools frequently like
GMail, Google+, or Google Calendar, go with Picasa, because it is
well-integrated with them. Otherwise, use Flickr.

[MBZ] 1987 300TDT for sale

2011-09-20 Thread brian costello
278k miles $1500

The Good/new: all replaced in the past year

New fan clutch
New serp. belt tensioner/roller/ and shock
New Vacuum pump (over $300)
New H20 pump (not needed poor diagnosis, but its still there and NEW)
Thermostat
New VCV valve (mounts to side of injection pump, controls vacuum)
EGR delete kit
NEW fuel injectors (bodies and nozzles!!!)
New timing chain
New front shocks (bump stops, billows, and mounts too)
New power antenna
new glow plugs and relay

Working:
Sun roof
complete third row seat (many times this is missing)
MB cross bars
tow hitch and wiring
SLS not leaking
Auto tranny shifting good and smooth

Not working:
cruise control
A/C
rear washer (wiper works great, no washer)
not all the HVAC vents (you get heat from the defroster and foot wells only)

The rust:
pass side strut tower (this can be fixed, I planned to weld some patches in
there and POR-15 the hell out it, no time)
pass side rear quarter
spot on the tail gate
drivers side C-pillar spot

This old girl starts, runs, drives, and brakes beautifully. She is rough
around the edges and needs some love. The pics I have show the summer
rubber, I plan on selling it with a like new (3 months use) set of Firestone
winterforce tires. With the snow tires this car is great in the snow (really
surprised me how well it handled the snow last year!!)

Reason for selling:
I bought a 2012 JSW TDI .. . no need for 2 wagons

Reason for price:
I am into this car for a little over $3000. I'm looking for 1/2 my $$ back.
not making a dime here.

The car is in Boston, MA

Thanks for looking!

Re: [MBZ] First experiment with HF tools

2011-09-20 Thread Greg Fiorentino
My experience is that I can embarrass the Sears people into honoring the
warranty. If you stand at the checkout and repeat Do you mean that the
Craftsman warranty is just bullshit? when a customer is there to pay up it
will pay them to give you a new tool. That being said, some of the HF tools
are perfectly serviceable. My general rule with them is that their
Taiwanese tools are generally better than the ChiCom ones. Their Pitman arm
puller is total crap. I would suspect any similar tools are also crap,
break on first attempted use. Sockets and breaker bars are very good.

Subject: Re: [MBZ] First experiment with HF tools

I bought a crapsman metric set with combination wrenches and 3/8 and
1/2 drive sockets in the 70s. I have never complained about the
sockets. In fact I still recommend buying a crapsman 1 1/16 deep
socket for injector holder RR. The combination wrenches, however,
were another story. The box ends have such a thick wall that they
won't fit many places. A far cry from the older tools my dad had.

I just happened to look at the current crop of crapsman wrenches at
Kmart today. The crapsman stuff is still thick walled, but they had
another line, that is highly polished to look like Snappy's
overpriced stuff. Those had a nice looking box; WAY thinner than the
crapsman set.

If you make your living with your tools, then buy Mac or SK or Snappy
or any good brand. If you are like me and only work on cars as
needed, then the HF stuff is very well suited.

I have been unsuccessful getting snears to replace any Lifetime
Guaranteed tool for the past 30 years. Every time I took something
back to HF, it was replaced without drama. I think I have taken back
only 2 things, and one was a corded drill that burned out within a
year. I did not buy the extended warranty.

I still have some crapsman junk that should be exchanged if anyone
wants to volunteer to try.

I now use mostly all Master Mechanic (True Value) and HF tools. The
MM are good tools, and they have been good about replacement of
broken things.

You will get what you pay for.

I never believed I got the quality I paid for with crapsman tools.
With a few exceptions, I have gotten what I paid for, or more from HF.

Diesels:
1980 240D 4 spd
1981 240D waiting for a 4spd or one of the hard to find 5 speeds.
1987 SDL
1987 300D

Next year they all qualify for the Antique plates in other states.

I bought a $40 ball joint tool set, bent the C-clamp on the first
real job we tried (replacing W126 ball joints, a royal pain).

I just spent $180 on a Specialty Products ball joint tool set that
looked identical, but this time the clamp stayed true even though we
really pulled on it.

A friend of mine bought an AC vacuum pump from them, then spent the
rest of the day looking for the oil for it. Nice pump, but no
vacuum pump oil in the store, no sign that it was necessary, the
whole thing was a pain.

My last customer service experience at Sears was so bad that I'm going
to try something different. I've almost always bought Craftsman tools,
even though I think their quality has declined over the years. The last
tool I wanted to buy (a stubby 3/8 ratchet handle) was in a locked
rack. So I had to wait for over half an hour for the ONE
slow-as-molasses, dim-witted salesperson in the tools dept. to finish
helping the two people who were there before me.

I've never tried HF hand tools before, but for the price and ease of
online ordering, I'm going to give them a chance.

I know that Phil Smart was doing a lot of head rebuilds on that engine

[MBZ] OT '96 Infiniti I30 woe

2011-09-20 Thread Max Dillon
SWMBO's car, '96 Infiniti I30, 204k miles, has begun to act up in the last
couple days. Once the car has been driven for a while and is nice and warm,
the engine will occasionally die while at idle, and occasionally is also
very rough at speed, like it is choking out. With just a little gas and at
low RPM, engine is fine, but if you really step on it or rev too high, it
bogs down and dies. The problem is an on/off problem; either it is running
fine, or it just dies. Behavior can be influenced by throttle position.

I suspect an ignition problem, so I'm going to see if it has stored any
codes in the ECU and also check the crankshaft position sensor. I've got

My response from BANNED:

Wow, Velour! Now that's super cool. That's a /8 model, a face lift of
sorts for the original W108/9 that started in 1968.

I don't see the air compressor/PS pump on the engine. Not sure if its
mounted on the M130 in the same place as the M189, certainly could be down
lower.

It would be interesting to see if it really runs and drives ok. The rust
repair is a scary thing, and it looks to be overall in sad shape, but still
could be a worthwhile car.

 It's a 68 300sel. Dude says he's had it since 98 when he bought it from a

made in front of drivers door). He said a vet brought it home from
Deustchland it 1970. Although the battery was dead, he claims itstarts
 right
up and it pumps up from the squat in 4 minutes. He claims that, when left
overnight, the backend squats and, after two nights sitting, the frontend
squats. Says it drives just fine. No belt on the AC compressor, also,
couldn't find the VIN plate (unless they aren't in the familiar place on

Having never looked at these before, I have no reference point.

The M130 makes this a less risky car, since you can get a good engine pretty
easily if you need one. Even a rebuild isn't unreasonable.

Air suspension is air suspension, but its a W109 and W112. Parts are not
horrible in price, and once its done, its fixed for a long time.

If the car falls overnight, thats pretty bad.

Say you have a car that is a lemon, or has repaired damage, or you lost the
title, or ... some other thing, rolled back odo. You can go to these places
and claim you need a new title. They issue it and you get a car with no history
of issues. Flood damage just goes away. Odometer is now good, salvage title
is a new clear title.

Well, codes say that front heated O2 sensor is bad (new), as well as some of
the evaporative control valves (which have been bad for the last 100k
miles). There's a couple of other codes I need to look up. O2 sensor
should not cause the engine to die by itself.

According to the manual, the crank position sensor logic has a fail safe
limp home mode, so that probably isn't the problem either.

I went to see it. Have several photos. have to figure out how to get them in
a place where they can be seen.
It's a 68 300sel. Dude says he's had it since 98 when he bought it from a
body shop in Scottsdale (left front fender whacked he said...and rust repair
made in front of drivers door). He said a vet brought it home from
Deustchland it 1970. Although the battery was dead, he claims itstarts right
up and it pumps up from the squat in 4 minutes. He claims that, when left
overnight, the backend squats and, after two nights sitting, the frontend
squats. Says it drives just fine. No belt on the AC compressor, also,
couldn't find the VIN plate (unless they aren't in the familiar place on
these).

Having never looked at these before, I have no reference point.

[MBZ] Car Quest has M1 15w50 on sale

2011-09-20 Thread Curt Raymond
Stopped at my local Car Quest on the way home from work, they had M1 15w50 on
sale for $6.50 a quart which is down from their normal $9something. I was going
to ask about Royal Purple but at that price...

All their stock was still badged CF, I don't know if it was old stock or what,
I bought 10 quarts.

[MBZ] Ahh the Italian tune up

2011-09-20 Thread Curt Raymond
Drove our '78 240D to work today. SWMBO has been driving it so I figured it'd
need the carbon blown out. I was right its badly carboned up, not quite to the
point it was when I bought it just over a year ago but pretty bad.

Unfortunately today was not a great Italian tune up day but we did nudge 80mph
for a little while. With luck we may be headed for Maine this weekend, a 300
mile round trip blast should help with things.

I also picked up new fuel filters just in case, the clear one is still clear
but I'm thinking a tank of BioD would help clean things out and if I do that I
expect to dirty some filters...

[MBZ] Pre w123 locks?

2011-09-20 Thread Curt Raymond
Managed to get the lock cylinder out of my '83 240D today (progress Loren!) but
was driven out by bugs before I could get farther.

Decided I'd take a look at the '78, its got different keys for the doors and
the ignition. I'd like to fix that and assuming the ignition lock works the
same as the door locks I figure it'll be pretty easy. I've got extra of the
brass wafers that make up the lock from when I did the door locks on Hammie.

Anyway the ignition lock on the '78 is different than the '83, its got a chrome
trim piece which pulls right off, then I'm confronted with a black outer ring
similar to on the '83 but theres no hole to put the paperclip in and it doesn't
seem to unscrew, or at least not the same as the '83 did.

What am I missing? I know theres much on this car that is similar to a w115, is
the lock that way too?

Alabama is another state that does this.  I used a title service when I bought
my 1962 300SE because it would have cost me several thousand dollars to clear
the title in California.  The PO and their estate had not registered the car
for some years, and California insists that you pay all the back registration
fees and penalties to release the title.

I got a bill of sale from the estate attorney and sent it off to Alabama with a
check for $150 or thereabouts.

Two days later I had a clear title in my hands.

[MBZ] exhaust work

2011-09-20 Thread Allan Streib
I pulled the exhaust off my W116 tonight. Everything unbolted easily
despite the rusty condition of the pipe itself (heavily rusted
everywhere, and perforated in several places). Had to use a hammer to
tap the junction at the turbo flex fitting but that popped off pretty
easily as well.

I ordered a new exhaust from Rusty, which arrived a few days ago.
Expensive, but really nice stuff. It was shipped without packaging,
just some foam wrap zip-tied around the pipe ends. So there are
shipping stickers stuck on all over the place, as well as MB inventory
stickers, which I'd like to remove before installing. The MB tags peel
off pretty easily, but the shipping labels are stuck on pretty well.
Does that Goo-Gone stuff work for that sort of thing? I'd like
something that won't disolve the paint. Maybe just soak with detergent
and use a plastic blade to scrape?

Speaking of the paint, there are a few scratches here and there,
presumably occurred in shipping and handling. I'd like to fill those
in. I'm wondering if I should use hi-temp paint or just something like
regular Rustoleum?

Re: [MBZ] Should I Call This Feller?

2011-09-20 Thread Michael Canfield
I don't deposit the check. I just take it to my bank and ask them to verify
it as I think it may be a fraud. I have $15k in fraudulent cashiers checks
and such that I have received over the years.
It is also a good way to test your bank. I closed my account with HSBC
after the manager lied to me and told me that the only way to verify a
cashiers check was to deposit it and wait. I walked down the street to
Community bank with whom I did not have an account, asked the teller if she
coyld verify the cashiers check and she got on the phone. Within 5 minutes
she told me the check was fraudulent. The banks use recycled numbers on
cashiers checks so they are very easy to make look real. The trick is that
the dollar amount will never match the same check number again, or so they
hope.

that they think they are getting something eventually. Obviously if
the check never clears the bank then you are not responsible for
 anything but grins.

Only problem with that approach is that when the check is retured your
bank may charge YOU a fee for depositing a bad check.

Anyone responding to an ad and offering anything other than cash in
excess of the price is a scammer. And you need to check the cash pretty
 closely too.

Re: [MBZ] exhaust work

2011-09-20 Thread Russ Williams

Goo Gone should get the shipping tag off. Let it soak for 30min or more.
Detergent won't touch the glue on it.
I'd use Hi Temp paint. Reg Rustoleum will burn off real quick.

Re: [MBZ] OT '96 Infiniti I30 woe

2011-09-20 Thread Max Dillon
Well, MAF fails the diagnostic test, so I probably need to replace that, as
well as one O2 sensor. There's a solenoid valve in the emissions system
that the ECU says the circuit fails to work properly, but the valve passes
the component test and the wiring harness has continuity and no short.
Problem might be at the connector at the ECU, which has over 100
connections. Frustrating. Might be worth getting a scan tool so I can
monitor the circuit while driving around to see if the fault is
intermittent.

Cleaned and tightened the engine ground points and reseated all the
associated connectors for the above. I'll drive the car for a couple days
and then take another look at the codes.

Subject: [MBZ] OT '96 Infiniti I30 woe

I've got
the factory service manual, I'll dig into that as well.

Anyone else have an idea?

The good news is SWMBO is now forced to drive the E300. She's on an errand
now, I'll ask for her opinion of the car once she gets back.

Very respectfully,

The battery.Last time I needed a battery FLAPS core was less than
the salvage price for a battery of $3-5. But I have not checked for
several years.

The car or the battery? Around here FLAPS will give you $10-$20 off
the price of a new battery if you bring in an old one, even long out
of warranty or from another store---they call it a core charge, but
I'm sure it's really that they get something for the lead.

Try 3M adhesive remover. It's potent stuff but works a hell of a lot better
than goo gone. I would definitely use a high temp paint.
