Unfortunately we lived near the beach, and it was impossible to keep up against the salt air. Thanks for the reminder. I think the right shock tower went in mine, right before the trunk floor. In 1977, all sunroof cars, and I believe all EMS, were assembled in Belgium. All Belgian 99s were rust buckets. I always wondered if they produced the unibodies in Sweden and shipped them bare metal over sea to Belgium for painting, undercoating and assembly. Whatever the deal was, the rust was happening underneath all that wonderful Saab rustproofing and you didn't know about it until something fell through the trunk floor. I had to quit driving mine when the rust in the trunk took out a gas tank strap attachment point. I straddled a woodchuck, heard a sort of bonging sound, looked in the mirror and saw the chuck stand up, wobble, and keel over. When I got home I looked under the car to figure out what hit him, and one side of my gas tank was hanging low. I bought a Swedish 1975 donor body but never transferred the EMS parts to it. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] take it, walk away, or run
Anybody have experience with the slk? Title is not an issue to me. Gump was never going to be perfect, so I am ok with a car with minor issues. An SLK with a roof that doesn't go down might not be a minor issue. The cars are very small, you'll sure notice that vs Gumpy. Very little storage space, most especially with the lid down, it's no SL. My wife knows somebody with one, she says they like it. I don't know if we could ever have one, my wife's been driving around with three saxophones in the trunk lately. The SL will do it, because of the rear 'seat', but just barely. They're the only 2-seaters I know of that have any semblance of storage. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

The trunk opened this evening. Weird. I've seen where the linkage between the vacuum actuator and the lock mechanism gets a bit messed up, perhaps this is part of your problem? It's got deliberate 'play' in it, so you can use the key, but too much is a bad thing. [MBZ] glow plugs - live learn
I had an experience yesterday where my '84 300D would not start and the dash glow plug lite would not lite and, since the glow plug fuse is fine, I checked the resistance (Fluke VOM) of the Bosch glow plugs which I installed in '06. I found two of the plugs (#3 4) had infinite resistance so I installed a couple of the original Behr glow plugs pulled in '06 and still reading good. I've since ordered a set of Behr glow plugs from Rusty. Is this a common occurance where the Behr glow plugs have substantially greater longevity than the Bosch glow plugs? Note: I purchased this car in '96 from the estate of the original purchaser and, since the M-B dealer from where it was originally purchased was closing its doors, I obtained all the service records for this car and found no glow plug replacements. [MBZ] Fw: W123 Trunk Lock
I ordered one from the dealer by vin number to get the right one that would work with the rest of the locks. I was told it would come with a new key and it did. Problem was the new key didn't work with the other locks and the old key didn't work with the net ignition lock. Had to send it back with my old key and they redid the lock so it would work with my old key and sent a new with it. Re: [MBZ] First experiment with HF tools
My experience is that I can embarrass the Sears people into honoring the warranty. If you stand at the checkout and repeat Do you mean that the Craftsman warranty is just bullshit? when a customer is there to pay up it will pay them to give you a new tool. That being said, some of the HF tools are perfectly serviceable. My general rule with them is that their Taiwanese tools are generally better than the ChiCom ones. Their Pitman arm puller is total crap. I would suspect any similar tools are also crap, break on first attempted use. Sockets and breaker bars are very good. I have never complained about the sockets. In fact I still recommend buying a crapsman 1 1/16 deep socket for injector holder RR. The combination wrenches, however, were another story. The box ends have such a thick wall that they won't fit many places. A far cry from the older tools my dad had. I just happened to look at the current crop of crapsman wrenches at Kmart today. The crapsman stuff is still thick walled, but they had another line, that is highly polished to look like Snappy's overpriced stuff. Those had a nice looking box; WAY thinner than the crapsman set. If you make your living with your tools, then buy Mac or SK or Snappy or any good brand. If you are like me and only work on cars as needed, then the HF stuff is very well suited. I have been unsuccessful getting snears to replace any Lifetime Guaranteed tool for the past 30 years. Every time I took something back to HF, it was replaced without drama. I think I have taken back only 2 things, and one was a corded drill that burned out within a year. I did not buy the extended warranty. I still have some crapsman junk that should be exchanged if anyone wants to volunteer to try. I now use mostly all Master Mechanic (True Value) and HF tools. The MM are good tools, and they have been good about replacement of broken things. You will get what you pay for. I never believed I got the quality I paid for with crapsman tools. With a few exceptions, I have gotten what I paid for, or more from HF. I just spent $180 on a Specialty Products ball joint tool set that looked identical, but this time the clamp stayed true even though we really pulled on it. A friend of mine bought an AC vacuum pump from them, then spent the rest of the day looking for the oil for it. [MBZ] OT '96 Infiniti I30 woe
SWMBO's car, '96 Infiniti I30, 204k miles, has begun to act up in the last couple days. Once the car has been driven for a while and is nice and warm, the engine will occasionally die while at idle, and occasionally is also very rough at speed, like it is choking out. With just a little gas and at low RPM, engine is fine, but if you really step on it or rev too high, it bogs down and dies. The problem is an on/off problem; either it is running fine, or it just dies. Behavior can be influenced by throttle position. I suspect an ignition problem, so I'm going to see if it has stored any codes in the ECU and also check the crankshaft position sensor. I've got the factory service manual, I'll dig into that as well. Anyone else have an idea? The good news is SWMBO is now forced to drive the E300. She's on an errand now, I'll ask for her opinion of the car once she gets back. My response from BANNED: Wow, Velour! Now that's super cool. That's a /8 model, a face lift of sorts for the original W108/9 that started in 1968. I don't see the air compressor/PS pump on the engine. Not sure if its mounted on the M130 in the same place as the M189, certainly could be down lower. It would be interesting to see if it really runs and drives ok. The rust repair is a scary thing, and it looks to be overall in sad shape, but still could be a worthwhile car. The M130 makes this a less risky car, since you can get a good engine pretty easily if you need one. Even a rebuild isn't unreasonable. Air suspension is air suspension, but its a W109 and W112. Parts are not horrible in price, and once its done, its fixed for a long time. If the car falls overnight, thats pretty bad. Say you have a car that is a lemon, or has repaired damage, or you lost the title, or ... some other thing, rolled back odo. You can go to these places and claim you need a new title. Well, codes say that front heated O2 sensor is bad (new), as well as some of the evaporative control valves (which have been bad for the last 100k miles). There's a couple of other codes I need to look up. O2 sensor should not cause the engine to die by itself. According to the manual, the crank position sensor logic has a fail safe limp home mode, so that probably isn't the problem either. -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Rich Thomas Sent: Tuesday, September 20, 2011 5:03 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT '96 Infiniti I30 woe Some sort of sensor or coil that does not like getting hot. Anyway the ignition lock on the '78 is different than the '83, its got a chrome trim piece which pulls right off, then I'm confronted with a black outer ring similar to on the '83 but theres no hole to put the paperclip in and it doesn't seem to unscrew, or at least not the same as the '83 did. What am I missing? I know theres much on this car that is similar to a w115, is the lock that way too? -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] exhaust work
I pulled the exhaust off my W116 tonight. Everything unbolted easily despite the rusty condition of the pipe itself (heavily rusted everywhere, and perforated in several places). Had to use a hammer to tap the junction at the turbo flex fitting but that popped off pretty easily as well. I ordered a new exhaust from Rusty, which arrived a few days ago. Expensive, but really nice stuff. It was shipped without packaging, just some foam wrap zip-tied around the pipe ends. So there are shipping stickers stuck on all over the place, as well as MB inventory stickers, which I'd like to remove before installing. The MB tags peel off pretty easily, but the shipping labels are stuck on pretty well. Does that Goo-Gone stuff work for that sort of thing? I'd like something that won't disolve the paint. Maybe just soak with detergent and use a plastic blade to scrape? Speaking of the paint, there are a few scratches here and there, presumably occurred in shipping and handling. I'd like to fill those in. I'm wondering if I should use hi-temp paint or just something like regular Rustoleum? Re: [MBZ] Should I Call This Feller?
I don't deposit the check. I just take it to my bank and ask them to verify it as I think it may be a fraud. I have $15k in fraudulent cashiers checks and such that I have received over the years. It is also a good way to test your bank. I closed my account with HSBC after the manager lied to me and told me that the only way to verify a cashiers check was to deposit it and wait. I walked down the street to Community bank with whom I did not have an account, asked the teller if she coyld verify the cashiers check and she got on the phone. Within 5 minutes she told me the check was fraudulent. The banks use recycled numbers on cashiers checks so they are very easy to make look real. The trick is that the dollar amount will never match the same check number again, or so they hope. Goo Gone should get the shipping tag off. Let it soak for 30min or more. Detergent won't touch the glue on it. I'd use Hi Temp paint. Reg Rustoleum will burn off real quick. Russ W. Re: [MBZ] OT '96 Infiniti I30 woe
Well, MAF fails the diagnostic test, so I probably need to replace that, as well as one O2 sensor. There's a solenoid valve in the emissions system that the ECU says the circuit fails to work properly, but the valve passes the component test and the wiring harness has continuity and no short. Problem might be at the connector at the ECU, which has over 100 connections. Frustrating. Might be worth getting a scan tool so I can monitor the circuit while driving around to see if the fault is intermittent. Cleaned and tightened the engine ground points and reseated all the associated connectors for the above. I'll drive the car for a couple days and then take another look at the codes. -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Max Dillon Sent: Tuesday, September 20, 2011 4:22 PM To: 'Mercedes Discussion List' Subject: [MBZ] OT '96 Infiniti I30 woe SWMBO's car, '96 Infiniti I30, 204k miles, has begun to act up in the last couple days. Try 3M adhesive remover. It's potent stuff but works a hell of a lot better than goo gone. I would definitely use a high temp paint.
